Tech Note: Tabular Exorcism

Science | Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 2:30:23 pm PDT

The latest change behind the scenes is huge, but hopefully you won’t even notice.

Ever since LGF began, back in the Paleostinky Era, our main template has been based around a simple HTML table with three columns. No nested tables (gasp!) or anything like that, but in the world of web wonks, this kind of table-based design is akin to walking around with a piece of spinach stuck between your front teeth.

So at long last we’ve ditched the tables, flossed our web choppers, and deployed a modified version of the three column floated layout described in this excellent book: CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions: Andy Budd, Simon Collison, Cameron Moll.

There may still be some bugs to work out, but the worst of them have been crushed. The layout looks the same in Internet Explorer 6 and 7, Safari 3, and Firefox 3.

One big advantage is the increased accessibility. Using this sort of floated layout allows us to have the main content column actually appear first in the source listing, before the left and right sidebars; this means that visitors with impaired vision who use screen readers no longer have to wade through the whole left sidebar just to get to the real stuff.

There’s one area left in the template that still uses a table: the navigation panels that appear at the top and bottom of the middle column. But that’s due for an exorcism too.

UPDATE at 10/5/08 6:24:16 pm:

Main template exorcism completed, and I didn’t even need to call in Bobby Jindal (sorry, couldn’t resist). The navigation panels now use an unordered list, with everything floated, including the opening <ul> tag, which keeps all the floated <li>s from overflowing their containers. Because we all know how painful that can be.

And that leaves us with one more area of table abuse: the top line of each comment, with the commenter’s information, rating buttons, etc.

Charles, it's absolutely fantastic that you're doing this work and making it more accessible for the blind/disabled using screen readers. More power to you!

I think I've eliminated all the problems people reported earlier. If you're seeing the left or right sidebars drop down to the bottom of the page, let me know.

Sorry to go OT so soon in a brand-spanking-new thread, but...

China to make foreign firms reveal secret info

The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Chinese government plans to introduce a new system requiring foreign firms to disclose secret information about digital household appliances and other products starting from May, sources said Thursday.

The envisaged system is likely to target products such as IC cards, digital copiers and possibly flat-panel TVs.

If a company refuses to disclose such information, the Chinese government plans to ban the firm from exporting the product to the Chinese market, as well as bar production and sales in the country, according to the sources.

Critics worry that such a system risks seeing the intellectual property of foreign firms passed onto their Chinese competitors.

In addition, the envisaged system poses security concerns if coding technology used in digital devices developed in other countries is leaked to China, they added.

Observers say the issue could develop into a serious international trade dispute, with Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry and U.S. Trade Representatives expected to urge the Chinese government to drop the plan.

The Chinese government is calling the planned system an "obligatory accreditation system for IT security products," according to the sources.

Specifically, foreign companies will be obliged to disclose relevant products' source code, or a sequence of statements written in computer programming language designed to control digital appliances and other high-tech products.

The system, whereby manufacturers will be allowed to sell their products on the Chinese market only after they pass tests based on disclosed source code and inspections by an accreditation body, is said to be unprecedented.

Products expected to be subject to the system are those equipped with secret coding, such as the Felica contactless smart card system developed by Sony Corp., digital copiers and computer servers.

The Chinese government said it needs the source code to prevent computer viruses taking advantage of software vulnerabilities and to shut out hackers.

However, this explanation is unlikely to satisfy concerns that disclosed information might be handed from the Chinese government to Chinese companies.

There also are fears that Chinese intelligence services could exploit such confidential information by making it easier to break codes used in Japanese digital devices.

Source code is considered a company's intellectual property. Microsoft Corp., for instance, kept secret its Windows' source code, helping it earn huge profits from licensing.

One thing I would really like because I read a whole thread before I post - is a ding record. I rarely post because I can't keep up, the only way I have to express myself is to ding up a post.

It would be nice to click on the avatars and see how many dings a person has had along with number of posts and links.

Depends on how extensive this sort of thing is right now. If it's one or two small groups in Californi-eye-ay... then it's mostly just something to keep an eye on. If Obama gets elected, and we see this stuff start showing up in communities all across the country, THEN it's time to get worried. Very.

Democratic Rep. William "Cold-Cash" Jefferson won the democratic primary in Louisiana this weekend. He will advance to a run-off election on December 6, 2008.

This was reported and briefly discussed on a previous thread today.

From that link, here is what he told the New Orleans CBS affiliate:

"I thank all of you who voted for me tonight to give me this chance to continue to serve you, to continue to exercise this deep embedded spirit in me for public service," Jefferson told supporters Saturday night in remarks that were broadcast online by the Web site of WWL-TV, the CBS affiliate in New Orleans.

His "deep embedded spirit" for public service.

He has a deep embedded spirit for chicanery, for power, and for the ability to be the hero "fixer" for people. That's more like it.

Justice would be served, I suppose, if the aliens harvested only the Chinese from this point onwards. Or if the Chinese harvested organs from mass-captured UFO-aliens. Or maybe both going on at the same time. Muahahahaha.

My guess is Charles is gonna make a bundle packaging his LGF blog code and selling it as a commercial blog product. It's probably about the best blog design going.

I wouldn't. Releasing code can open one's website for hacker attacks when malicious hackers think they get some inside information.
But I bet Charles gets hacker attacks anyway.
LGF - Top secret code, as it should be.

My kids' websites got hacked because they use an early version of Wordpress - too many WP hackers. A LOT better now though and more so if some basic changes made.

His "deep embedded spirit" for public service.

He has a deep embedded spirit for chicanery, for power, and for the ability to be the hero "fixer" for people. That's more like it.

___________________________
He did NOT win the Democratic Primary.
Jefferson got 25% of the vote and will face Moreno who got 20% in the runoff on Nov 4. There were SEVEN candidates for the seat and no one had a majority yesterday.

The general election is Dec 6 for that seat.

BTW, Jefferson is having a hard time raising money. He'll maybe get a few more percentage points.

Four weeks to go still, and even though the polls (spit) look a bit daunting, that's still plenty of time to see things turn around, with plenty of ammo still to use.

Unlike many, I think the polls are legit, albeit skewed by the selection process. That said, I believe McCain/Palin will win not only the electorate college vote, they will win the popular vote as well. And not by a narrow margin either.

I know of no page. My experience is personal. It's not exactly in Frontline's interest to mention this problem, as there is no remedy but to warn your customers. Why would they do that? I see an optical illusion. When I look at the "IIIIIIIllllllllllllllllIII" it appears to be undulating across the top.
That's your eye brain is actually moving those lines around trying to make sense of it - we do it all the time - but don't even realize we are doing it. We see what we want to see. Stare at it long enough and it will look like some"thing" - a snake, dancers, tracks, .......

Wow. Okay, I think I may mention something to my vet when I call them tomorrow. Yikes.

Is there a web page that describes this in some detail? I'd like to give him something solid as opposed a net rumor (not disputing you--just thinking he needs a link).

I used to have your problem with FrontLine Plus, and when my vet switched my cat to Advantage, the flea problem was better *instantly*. It's the super advantage in the purple box.

Aha! Okay, so switching brands might be possible--except that this cat had the FrontLine on the 20th, so it hasn't been a full month yet. Vet might not go for that.

That's okay. I have a friend who has said for years that any cat I have should be turned into a doorstop--a dead one. He absolutely hates cats.

It has been said that Napoleon, Hitler, other assorted dictators hated cats. Just sayin'.
Good luck getting rid of the fleas.

Some fleas are becoming resistant to the *new* pesticides that worked so well when they first came out on the market.

Hitler certainly hated Katz, as well as all the other Jews.

Especially since many people named Katz are Kohanim. Some of them have a very large karban footprint.

Sexist remark from nobama campaign:

"It's a giant changing of the subject," said Jenny Backus, a Democratic strategist. "The problem is the messenger. If you want to start throwing fire bombs, you don't send out the fluffy bunny to do it..."

Right, you get Bill Ayers to do it.

What browser are you using?

206 justadot  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 7:16:54pm
The navigation panels now use an unordered list, with everything floated, including the opening <ul> tag, which keeps all the floated <li>s from overflowing their containers. Because we all know how painful that can be.

Yeah, I saw that earlier. Nice design for ul.navpanel, Charles. I thought you'd use a DIV but a list works out for this well. After all, it is a list of links.

A small suggestion: consider reformatting such that the layout makes maximum
use of the available browser-window's white space. Right now, I'm seeing roughly
the middle third of the window containing , with the left- and right-side
thirds of the window empty. The only exception is the top "little green footballs"
banner. which _does_ automatically adapt to the actual window width.
