Tech Note: IE6 Needs an Exorcism

Science | Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 2:32:31 pm PDT

If you’re using Internet Explorer version 6, you may have noticed the left sidebar seemingly disappearing.

It wasn’t really disappearing, it was being pushed down to the bottom of the page when the “Top Rated Links” area opened up. The reason: without getting too technical, Internet Explorer is simply the buggiest browser still in common use, and since we moved to a pure CSS float-based layout the bugs have been crawling out of everywhere.

This problem is fixed now, at the cost of having the columns look slightly lopsided. We’re using conditional comments to serve modified styles to IE6, so the lopsided look only shows up in that misbegotten browser.

Why would anybody use IE6, unless their OS requires it, like Windows 2000?

2 bosforus  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 2:34:33pm

Charles, I'm getting two lines of CSS at the top of the page w/ FF 3.0.3

3 Sharmuta  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 2:34:34pm

Until forced to use it last night, I'd forgotten how much I hate IE.

4 Honorary Yooper  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 2:35:24pm

IE7 is fine.

Tech talk! I'm strangely aroused.

8 zerodamage  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 2:37:17pm

Unless IE8 is a complete 180 turn from what IE has been since version 3, I will probably never use it again. Seriously people, you should be using Firefox or Safari.

Charles:

Heads up, getting this in header using IE7:

medium, .mediumgb, .adstrip_title, .blogheader, h2, h5 { font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 120%; } .sidetitle, .LGFmaindiv p.LGFtitle { font-family: Tahoma; } .posts, p, .nonlink { font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 120%; } .smalltext, .archive, .byline, .postinfo, .te_1, .LGFmaindiv p { font-family: Helvetica; } blockquote, .frontquote, blockquote p { font-family: Times New Roman; }

Closing browser and restarting....

Oh that sucks. Firefox 3.0.3 runs even in Win2K. Of course if you have Web-based apps that won't run in IE7, well...

Charles, still there after browser restart, grey strip at top of page with that in it.

20 zombie  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 2:40:31pm

Charles, I'm using Safari 3, and I see this across the top of any LGF window:

29 Sharmuta  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 2:46:22pm

I pulled up FF3 and did not see that strange header. Nor am I seeing it in Safari, though I'm not sure what version I'm using. I'm not pulling up IE. I've had enough IE to last the rest of the year.

Yemen dismantled Israeli-linked terrorist cell: President

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said on Monday that Yemeni police have dismantled a "terrorist cell linked to the Israeli intelligence services.""Members of a terrorist cell were arrested five days ago, and will be put on trial for links with the Israeli intelligence services," Saleh said in speech in the south-eastern province of Hadhramout.

Quoted by the official Saba news agency, Saleh said, however, the cell was operating under the "slogan of Islam."

An amazing amount of our clients still use IE6, and there's not a lot more we can do for them as time marches forward. Div tags, transparent png files, all lost on that browser. For a lot of folks and companies - if it ain't broke (and they don't know it's broke)...

Problem is, the web is sort of like a race, everybody is getting Ferraris and Porsches, and the people in old Ford pick-ups still expect you to keep them in the hunt.

48 West Coast Freedom  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 3:05:34pm

How about a nice quote for the thread:

“The second amendment gives the individual citizen a means of protection against the despotism of the state. Look what it refers to: “The security of a free state.” The word “free” should be underlined because that is what they are talking about and that is what the Constitution is about–a free nation and a free people, where the rights of the individual are preeminent. The founding fathers had seen, as the Declaration of Independence tells us, what a despotic government can do to its own people. Indeed, every American should read the Declaration of Independence before he reads the Constitution, and he will see that the Constitution aims at preventing a recurrence of the way George III’s government treated the colonies.”

President Ronald Reagan

Just sent this to johnmccain.com:

Thank the Diety that Senator McCain is finally dealing out the plain facts about Obama. Now get busy and win this election. Name names, there is no reason to hold back on Wright, Obama sent him taxpayer money. Explain how Raines and Rezco and Obama conspired to rip off the American people. Mention Barney Franks' friend Moses at Fannie Mae. Explain why Ayers matters. Not only because he is an unrepentant terrorist, mention real crimes done and attempted such as the Murtaugh and Fort Dix bombings and the death of the police officer. It also matters because of the tax free money machine Obama was part of. Finally lay out all your records for anyone, not just favored reporters to see. Every Annapolis demerit, the divorce, everything should be on the table. Then demand a list of documents from Obama from birth certificate to school records and legal time sheets. This man Obama has had three non-elected jobs in his life, entry level writer for a financial newsletter that he embellished on his resume, adjunct instructor at a law school without going through faculty review or doing scholarly work and junior lawyer on the case in which Acorn forced through sub-prime mortgages in Illinois.

Where are the surrogates? Romney should be doing 3 events a day in Michigan now through November 3rd. Giuliani should be doing the same in Florida with Lieberman. Fred Thompson should be all over Indiana and Ohio working every town big enough to have a traffic light. This is the last lap, hold nothing back.

re: #44 uncle_monkey

True, but the major problem (from my POV) is the ISP architectures. The service providers (AT&T/Yahoo, etc.) are often so determined to update them so quickly and repeatedly, that they forget details like what used to be called "back-compatibility". That is, the idea that a system that may not be the most bleeding-edge there is must still be able to connect.

The same thing happened with the telephone system during the changeover from dial to touch-tone. But in fact, AFAIK, the telephone system still allows the use of dial phones.

/AT&T should take note

As some of you know, I still do some at home contract programming for some clients like Kaiser and an occasional desktop project for home users.

I just had a person drop off a HP mini-tower W98se box. He tried to insert a USB memory stick into the USB port, and for what ever reason, he blew most of the windows operating system directories.

I'm sitting here manually fixing each and every W98se system files using scan disk, becuase it won't let me reinstall W98se without the file structure being recontructed.

And this person still uses dial up at 56k.

So, I don't want to hear any complaints about IE6. LOL.

Why is it the WHITE courtesy phone?!

ARE THEY THE ONLY ONES CAPABLE OF COURTESY?!

Reminds me of an old joke-

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were protesting in front of a Chicago-area Sears store because all the washing machines were white, and that was racist.

The manager came out and asked if either of them had looked in the washers. They both said no, why, what difference does that make? The manager said if you would have bothered to look in the machines you'd see that all the agitators are black.

I surprised there are people using ANY version of IE, but I have to remind myself that most computer users just do follow IT like us developers/IT professionals do.

At least I can shield my family and friends form Microsoft...

Well, up to a few years ago, I made my living for 25 years as a programmer under Windows platforms, so Microsoft has paid my bills.

I work in live theatre now, and only do the programming and desktop support on a part time basis, but I can't complain, there's a lot of Windows boxes out there.

That's my bottom line.

89 mjbrutus  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 3:26:31pm

As a fellow Web App developer, I can sympathize with you. IE6 was coded by Satan himself.

Listen, far be it from me to defend Windoze. I cut my 'puter teeth on assembler, basic, pascal and other assorted programming languages. I KNOW WHAT A KLUDGE MICROSOFT CAN PRODUCE. However, that being said, I have even more dislikes about some of the other browsers available and though I regret any work-arounds Charles may have to use, I appreciate that they are being implemented at least until I can find a browser that I like and that works the way I want it to. It's not easy searching for a browser. There's a lot of time spent and most of the time wasted installing and uninstalling software. Not to mention the registry changes that may or may not be removed and that cause other problems. I'm using what works best for me so far. Those of you who are happy with their browser -- G!d bless you! Now quite carping about my browser and pray that someone, somewhere creates a browser that everyone can use.

I only use IE for two sites that I have to visit. One's my credit card, the other is my company I work for part time. Both sites for some reason only work in IE. I complained about one, but I think the webmasters are lazy and just pulled everything out of a box.

Same here- I only open it because certain sites demand it of me, but I'm always pissed about it.

That described me until a couple of months ago, except it was a Dell, and it still "works."

That fits the gentleman who just drop off his Window 98 box. He uses dial up, he says it works for him and he's happy. He's in his middle 60's and just doesn't want to fuss with network cards and cable modems etc. (even though he does have Comcast cable).

But his ex-wife is not happy. Two weeks ago, he was surfing at his ex-wifes house, on her computer, and decided to visit a porn site.

The site was trying to push some sort of trojan or adware down to the desktop, so he shut the whole thing down.

He decided to do a system recovery, ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE FACTORY SETTINGS. The box was a HP, built in 2002.

So, his ex-wife suddenly has a fresh box with nothing that looks right, works right, and she lost access to a lot of stuff that she had installed over the years.

It took me two days to rebuild the system and upgrade it back to XP SP3 and all her programs, files, documents etc.

Ex-hubby paid for it.

I hate to say it, but I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that the GOP's leadership is about convinced (mainly by polls) that The One has it locked up, and is already planning for 2012. The idea being that they expect four years of the Messiah to be as catastrophic for America as four years of Jimmy Carter were three decades ago. Which means that they will have a chance to beat him in '12 with a good, safe, reliable mainstream Republican who will do proper obeisance to the leadership and maintain the status quo.

/in short, thinking like Democrats do whenever a non-radical slips through the cracks and threatens to become a national figure- think Zell Miller or Joe Lieberman

What they forget is how close Gerald Ford came to winning in '76, in spite of one of the more lackluster campaigns in modern history. IIRC, it was less than a quarter-million votes across the entire U.S., even with the albatross of Watergate hung around President Ford's neck due to pardoning Tricky Dick. To me, at the time, this indicated a certain disenchantment with Jimmy-Earl going in, even among Democrats, that turned into buyer's remorse almost as soon as he took office. To steal Hunter S. Thompson's observation about Nixon, Carter's seemingly supernatural talent to turn almost any minor problem into a stem-winding crisis caused him to blow the boilers of the Ship of State almost instantly upon assuming command. (Having underlings like Cyrus Vance, Harold Brown, Andrew Young and Bert Lance didn't help any, either- even though Vance at least had the common decency to resign when it was obvious that his foreign policy was an unmitigated disaster, after Desert One.)

The other thing the GOP leadership may be failing to consider is- what if Obama does more damage to this country, comparatively speaking, than Carter did? In many ways, The One is (IMHO) a much weaker man than Carter. He is a product of the hothouse political culture of Cook County, much as Bill Clinton was of the culture of Arkansas politics, notably Hot Springs, the state's answer to Mos Eisely Spaceport. Based on his background, I would expect The One to be rather belligerent toward domestic opponents on the grounds that if they cannot see his brilliance, they are too stupid to have an opinion and should therefore STFD and STFU, or else. Versus foreign opponents (of the United States) I would expect him to seek "deals" wherever he thinks he can get them- at any cost.

The first time he found himself up against an enemy who was not interested in "deals", for political, strategic, or eschatological reasons, I would expect him to collapse like a house of cards when somebody slams the front door. Much as Carter did when the Iran hostage crisis- which he helped set off by his weak response to Khomeini & Co.- blew up in his face.

Of course, back then, the most likely opponents didn't have nuclear weapons. Now, if they don't have them right now, they probably will have them before The One takes the Oath of Office.

This really isn't the time for the GOP to try to play "wait for next time." There might not be one.

My network machines at work all run XT Pro. I run Vista at home w/IE7. IT people understand that XP is nothing more than an up-graded windows "98" version of NT. Vista takes this up-grade a step further. I will stay put until the up-grade proves profitable. LGF is the exception rather than the rule. The sites my business visits are based on the "Win 98" standard.

Technically speaking, McCain wasn't really the party favorite, was he? Wasn't he actually chosen by Independents voting in Republican primaries? I also think that all that 'reaching across' party lines has really annoyed certain people- especially since there are times that McCain seems to be more congenial to Democrats than his own party members.

Exactly! I had heard so much good about FF but when I tried it, it was a mess. I like to set things up my way but many programmers just don't think of allowing certain choices.

BTW: window is so kludgy because there are too many fingers in the pie and not well managed. Also the code is bloated because it's easier for the programmers to create. (i.e. inelegant decision trees with unneeded IF THENs or ELSE IFs etc.) but it's grown so big no one can figure out what to remove and what to leave in. Some of the bugs in current svc packs are caused by the removal or recoding of previous stuff with effects no one realized.

Except with Mozilla Firefox 3. One of its odder quirks is a sort of "semi-crash" in which it locks up, appears to close, but is in fact still running "in the background". When you try to reopen it, you get this screen;

Firefox is still running. You must close it and then restart it.

The only way I've found to do that is a reboot of the computer. Any other method simply gets you the same message over again.

From what I can gather, the crash reports for FF3 don't include all of the relevant info anymore -- half the data is left in the stack report [?], and it doesn't get sent to Mozilla. There is some multi-step process to get the second half of the data from inside windows and send it to the techies, but it is beyond my limited skillz.

re: #128 eon

The only way I've found to do that is a reboot of the computer. Any other method simply gets you the same message over again.

I found if you give it a two second count before clicking again-no problem.

re: #1 Ward Cleaver

Why would anybody use IE6, unless their OS requires it, like Windows 2000?

Cause the system admin on your work computer has the OS locked down and won't allow software installs that require rewriting the registry.

Which is why I'm using Chrome, which seems OK except the avatars/images are all little footballs today. I.e., my Valley V or JammieWearin'Fool's New York Giants logo would be footballs. (Although he's not here to speak for himself.)

OT again, sorry:

The Jewel of Medina, a book about the Islamic prophet Muhammad that has been banned in the UK, has been released in the US today. If you feel like pissing off those jihadis in England, order a copy:

re: #153 zato

Thats a solid response from the barracuda. Somebody ought to tell the community organizers and the wannabe-trendy-lefty-protestors and that they'd be the first ones in trouble if, god forbid, we were to lose that fight.

Not much chance they'd believe it. One of the more irritating things about the more extreme "progressives", in my experience, is their belief that the jihadists, etc., are mad at all the rest of us but not them.

And that after the "Triumph", said jihadists will be too stupid to run the world, will realize it- and will appeal to the "enlightened elite" to run it for them.

I call it the Manson Syndrome, after Charlie-Boy's vision of the war he would set off that would leave him in charge of everything- see Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry.

/The stupider an idea is, the more likely that some self-defined "intellectual" will believe that it is the absolute, unchallengeable truth

Charles,

Here is another wanker that spews his tripe in the name of accurate journalism.

I hope you don't mind, I used one of your lines.

This man Burston has won my admiration—his writing was incredibly brilliantly stupid. If he decides to get a doctorate in stupid, he has the start of a great thesis.

re: #159 buzzsawmonkey

For what it's worth:

My sister sent around an article to the family, from the Jerusalem Post, about a prObama video interviewing Israeli generals. Some of those interviewed claimed they had been quoted out of context.

Got a response from the prObama sib, who dismissed the video--and wondered how Sis and I could support the "continuation of such a disastrous Republican administration, with a candidate who now panders to everyone he previously rejected (who is he?) and no sophistication about the economy and a laughably qualified VP candidate."

My reply begins here, will be continued in the next post. It may help other people formulate discussions:

That video was debunked today at Gateway Pundit

I was logged in, Charles, because I was posting!

LOL!

Refresh did solve the problem though. Chrome's cache must have been stale.

re: #160 buzzsawmonkey

My best bud, the E-5, and I were talking about the support for The One in jihadi circles this morning. Our conclusion was as follows;

1. About half the jihadis, notably Hamas, believe that he is in fact a Muslim, and thus will support them when in office.

2. The other half, notably Hesbollah, belive he's weak, vain, and stupid, and will be easily intimidated into letting them run wild across the MidEast, 86' Israel, and eventually force the West into "proper" obeisance to Allah. (They aren't afraid of anyone else in the West, since they've pretty much invaded Europe and are working on subjugating Britain.)

We concluded that (2) is the most likely correct analysis, as neither one of us believes the "he's really a Muslim" story. We both just think he's a ward heeler who's gotten in over his head, and is too egotistical to admit it, even to himself.

re: #110 Bobblehead

OT Gov. Palin Gives a great comeback to a war protester. That woman is wonderful. Anyone who can think on her feet like that deserves our praise. She deserves to be VP!

In one of the comments, someone who calls herself "Paco" provided this link to an article titled Remembering a Sixties Terrorist from FrontPage Magazine.
It paints Bill Ayers as low-class. Really low-class.
It also has a pretty blunt paragraph on what was (is?) necessary to avoid being called "racist".

IE6 is still about 40% of the browsers in use, mostly at companies that don't want to update. So, if you want the lunchtime crowd, you have to accommodate IE6 in your website design.

174 HBob  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 5:26:58pm

My old version of Firefox also seems to be running much better. It was crashing every time I visited LGF. LGF also just downloaded a lot faster.

Thanks!

175 HBob  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 5:29:01pm

Well crap - it just crashed when I left LGF, like it has been since I did the stupid Firefox "upgrade".

176 hithere  Mon, Oct 6, 2008 10:05:01pm

I have installed Win XP on a number of PC's that I have built for my family's use. Each time I only use IE6 to download firefox.

I had to access the site through Firefox since I cannot login in IE6.

I get "Authentication Error".

So I think there are still some bugs.

Just logged in with IE6 - I think you may have experienced operator error. The error log says 'incorrect password...'
