UPDATE at 10/7/08 4:40:05 pm:

When Obama hits the stage and begins speaking we'll be treated to an empty suit and a soundtrack of random indecipherable chatter.

McCain needs a little pep talk.

I will be watching the debate in a bar tonight, hopefully surrounded by other republicans. Yes, right here in Manhattan.

Wish me luck! :)

I think Ayers and Wright have been farmed out to Sarah. McCain will be all over the economy and whatever he wants to talk about. Brokaw will be a non-event. Only vague references to Ayers from McCain... it's going to be the town hall format McCain's been begging for and I predict a very big win for John tonight. Tonight it's do or die and he knows it. The momentum must swing his way starting tonight and if he survives the pace he's going to set he'll live to be 100.

18 The Pulchritudinous Patriot  Tue, Oct 7, 2008 3:33:23pm

Evenin all! Man, I'm praying hard for Mac to kick ass tonight...it all hinges on tonight...if he messes up, then I think it's all over. It's only 30ish days till the election and unless the RNC has a tape of BO having a wide stance moment in some random men's room somewhere (and even that might not do the trick) then the odds of Mac winning on election day are slim.

Sorry for the run on sentence.

In other news, I finally got to see the SNL skit...work blocks some of the vids, and it's scary how dead on right they were.

Funny, in a macabre sort of way.

19 jaunte  Tue, Oct 7, 2008 3:33:33pm

I heard a report the other day on Fox news that Belmont University won the right to host the debate by, among a list of other qualifications, dropping their no liquor on campus policy so that the media could be provided with a bar tent.
I wonder if that's an absolut requirement.

20 itellu3times  Tue, Oct 7, 2008 3:33:47pm

"it's the economy, stupid"

we will here Obama talk about spending hundreds of billions, right?

(and why not, since we're spending it bailing out wall street, only that's not really what it's about, or is it? like obama or mccain is going to clarify that)

I just hope McCain has something constructive to say, and not just shoot blame and accusations all over the place - no matter how true.

21 calvin coolidge  Tue, Oct 7, 2008 3:33:59pm

I know it's a month too early but ABC, NBC, and CBS have projected Barack Obama to be the winner of the Presidential election. Usually, they wait until some of the polls have been counted on the evening of the election, but they figure why wait? They sure are efficient.

25 gibsonz  Tue, Oct 7, 2008 3:34:38pm

Has McCain begun to fight as yesterday`s rally suggests or will he continue down the path to his defeat...we can only hope for the McCain who gave the "fight with me speech" at the convention to resurface.

26 Ozark Mountain Daredevil  Tue, Oct 7, 2008 3:34:42pm

Mac better leave Gentleman Johnny at home tonight. I want to see him turn this debate in to the Jerry Friggin' Springer Show! If I don't see a chair flying in His Changeness' general direction during Mac's opening statement I'm tuning out.

It's not specifically on the economy...it's on what members of the audience and Brokaw ask, which can be anything. So, yeah, it may be on the economy.../

The last debate is specifically on the economy (but I still think they need to ask foreign policy questions then to make up for the first debate.)

So the monster lied about Ayers. And it was a stupid lie. That's because this monster is a stupid liar. Apparently, if the opinion polls are right, that's what America's looking for, now. It would also seem American wants a socialist president with no discernible practical or leadership experience. A venal hypocrite who would be a crypto-muslim if he believed in any god other than himself, which he does not. If the polls are right, America appears ready to close up shop, set it on fire, and lock itself in. If that happens, I see little alternative but to wait out the inevitable collapse. Unless we win. Once again, if the polls are right, and with all our enemies arrayed before us, John McCain has nothing more to lose tonight. Let's hope he goes for the victory, then, and good fortune to him and our nation.

Only vague references to Ayers from McCain... it's going to be the town hall format McCain's been begging for and I predict a very big win for John tonight. Tonight it's do or die and he knows it. The momentum must swing his way starting tonight and if he survives the pace he's going to set he'll live to be 100.

What is the audience make up? They'll be asking the questions.

I feel the same way, mainly becuase I have nothing to loose. I keep about a 2000 dollar buffer in the bank, basicly enough to cover a few months of bills, and other than that, it's one small paycheck a month under 1500 dollars.

I don't have anything for retirement, so nothing can go down or bye-bye. And, at 55, if things really goes down the tubes, maybe I'll stop paying taxes, and by the time I'm 60, I can get three hots and a cot in some white collar prison, with cable TV.

Anyone able to guess which news outlet had the byline for this:

Corsi's best-selling book, released earlier in the U.S., claims the Illinois senator is a dangerous, radical candidate for president and includes innuendoes and false rumors — that he was raised a Muslim and attended a radical black church.

Obama is a Christian who attended Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, and his campaign picks apart the book's claims on the Web site FightTheSmears.com.

/It's Mainstream Media, so it can't be biased or propaganda/

My prediction of the opening question from Tom Brokaw:

"Senator McCain, the people here at this Townhall meeting have seen your campaign really ramp up the negative ads along with the personal attacks on Senator Obama. And just in the past two days, you and Governor Palin have sought to question Senator Obama's patriotism by trying to associate him with Bill Ayers' terrorist activities when Barack Obama was only 8 years old! What this audience wants to know is this: are you going to answer the big questions in front of this country tonight or are you going to resort to petty attacks on Senator Obama's character?
Are you going to try and place blame for this economic crisis or are you going to explain to all of us how you will fix it like Senator Obama has been doing all week long.

Here's an Obama move to watch for tonight, via Best of the Web Today:

"In politics one often hears the charge of hypocrisy: My opponent criticizes me for X, but he has done Y, which is just as bad or worse. Obama's argument here, though, is roughly opposite in form. He concedes that McCain is above reproach on this particular subject and therefore demands that McCain treat him as if he were beyond reproach."

Barack Obama's Lost Years
by Stanley Kurtz
08/11/2008

[...]

This brings us to what is perhaps the most striking result of our tour through Obama's Springfield days. Conventional wisdom has it that John McCain holds a political advantage over Obama on war and foreign policy issues, while Obama is favored to handle the economy. Yet Obama's economic experience is largely limited to social welfare spending. Indeed, precisely because of his penchant for spending, Obama's fingerprints are all over Illinois's burgeoning fiscal crisis.

The Illinois state budget has been in an ever-widening crisis since 2001. In an April 2007 report, a committee of top Chicago business leaders warned that the state was "headed toward fiscal implosion." Illinois's unfunded pension debt is the highest in the nation, while Illinois is sixth in the nation in per capita tax-supported debt. Yet the Illinois General Assembly-now controlled by Obama's Democratic allies-churns out at will exactly the sort of spending programs Obama pushed for, with only partial success, under the Republicans. The result is a fast-growing gap between revenues and expenditures (unimpeded by the statutory requirement of a balanced budget), rising fears of fiscal meltdown, finger-pointing, and political gridlock.

A watershed moment in Illinois's fiscal decline came in 2002, when crashing receipts and Democratic reluctance to enact spending cuts forced Republican governor George Ryan to call a special legislative session. While Ryan railed at legislators for refusing to rein in an out-of-control budget, the Chicago Tribune spoke ominously of an "all-consuming state budget crisis." Unwilling to cut back on social welfare spending, Obama's chief partner and political mentor, senate Democratic leader Emil Jones, came up with the idea of borrowing against the proceeds of a windfall tobacco lawsuit settlement due to the state.

This idea sent the editorial pages of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Chicago Tribune into a tizzy. Editorialists hammered cut-averse legislators for "chickening out," for making use of "tricked-up numbers," for a "cowardly abdication of responsibility," and for sacrificing the state's bond rating to "short-term political gains." As critics repeatedly pointed out, borrowing against a onetime tobacco settlement-instead of balancing the budget with regular revenues-would be a recipe for long-term fiscal disaster.

What was Obama doing while all this was going on? He was promoting the tobacco securitization plan in his Hyde Park Herald column, railing against the governor in the Defender for balancing the budget "on the back of the poor," and voting to override cuts in treasured programs like bilingual education. Actually, far from "balancing the budget on the backs of the poor," the governor had trimmed evenly across all the state's most expensive programs. In the end, Ryan did force a number of cuts, yet the resistance of Obama and his allies took a toll. When, just a year later, Democrats added control of the governorship and state senate to their existing control of the house, they revealed that the state deficit had reached $5 billion-far larger than most had feared. Since then it's been a swift downhill tumble toward fiscal implosion for Illinois. Now ruling, the Democrats have continued their profligate ways, pushing the state's budget woes to new heights.

Illinois's fate may foreshadow the nation's. Obama's small and carefully targeted spending bills were expressly designed to win passage by a Republican-controlled state senate. But if Obama takes the presidency with a Democratic Congress at his back, we'll likely see a grand-scale version of the fiscal mayhem Obama and his colleagues brought to Illinois.

Me too. Seriously, of the entire article, that's one of the first things I noticed. They actually changed the article; part of it originally spoke of the Kenyan elections and happenings after, and that it was much ado about nothing, the people were happy, etc. It was even more blatant than the one that is up now, if you can believe it. I was mad that I didn't get a screen shot but I didn't expect them to change it that quickly. Oh, it also originally said something about Corsi going over to give Obama's half brother some money, and said that it was some kind of publicity stunt.

Despicable.

Smart move. Shut Savage off. After the election, when McCain wins Savage will claim that he KNEW McCain would win all along.

And it is well advised to ignore ALL the polls. They make no sense. Such wild swings are impossible. For example one Poll has Obama is up +15 in PA, and that 20% of the Repubs in PA are voting for The One. This is impossible.

Also note that most polls indicated a big Obama win against Hillary in many states toward the end of the Primary. But Hillary won in those states. The Polls were way off then; and they are way off now.

Just vote, ignore the psychological opps of the MSM.

You Brits alway have!

307 LockeStockandBarrel  Tue, Oct 7, 2008 4:14:51pm

And I quote (from the primaries):

"And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values, doesn't make much sense,"

And a detail(again, because Hilary tried the same thing):

Clinton is correct that both men served together on the board of the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based charity that develops community groups to help the poor. Ayers joined the board in 1999 and is still on it. Obama left it in December 2002 after nine years.
-USAToday

The question is... people who want to hate Obama will eat this up, but what about those voters in the middle of the road? Is this going to make Obama look scary, or make McCain look dirty? Or a bit of both?

Hilary tried this Ayers tack, and tried the lack of experience tack, and failed with both... I don't hold out a lot of hope that McCain can pull through here. Instead of trying this extreme label "terrorist pal," he should go for something more people can swallow, something like 'elitist,' or 'most liberal,' identify Obama's waffles, etc. It worked in 2004, why aren't pushing this theme today? Is Fred Thompson the only one who sees this?

Is The Boston Globe sensing its impending doom and trying to keep some of their disgruntled readers from bailing?

This is the second time I've seen such a letter make it to the Letters to the Editor in recent days.

Wrong to heap scorn on Palin

SURPRISE, SURPRISE! Of course the editorial page would have a section of letters titled "Palin's critics speak out" (Oct. 4). Six letters printed, to be exact. Zero positive letters.

How about some fair and balanced opinions and letters from readers who aren't full of condescending, negative remarks, readers who actually may think differently from the Globe?

There are some of us in Massachusetts who are educated, cultured, well-read, and can occasionally enjoy a coffee (oops, I meant a latte) from Starbucks, and who like Sarah Palin.
M. VAN KLEEFF, Ashland

Of course the comments are what you would come to expect from the moonbats who troll boston.com all day.

Example:

Well if you like a female Jed Clampett I guess that's OK.
The difference is Buddy Ebsen knew he was acting. Ah Shucks Palin is trying to convince us she isn't. How can supposedlly thinking men or women support a person who obviously has no knoowledge of the constitution she is sworn to uphold? Well if you like a female Jed Clampett I guess that's OK.

Just saw this AP story up at Breitbart:

Palin stretches truth in campaign speeches

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin tells audiences the election is about the "truthfulness and judgment" needed to be president. But the Alaska governor often stretches the truth herself.
She has exaggerated the nature of Barack Obama's personal ties to a former 1960s radical and falsely claimed the Democratic presidential candidate plans to raise most people's taxes.

On Tuesday, she tried rebutting the Illinois senator's criticisms of Republican presidential candidate John McCain over health care and Social Security. She said Obama was misleading and wrong, but she herself told less than the full story.

To be sure, most of Palin's assertions about Obama echo claims McCain himself has made or lines from Republican TV ads.

At a rally Tuesday, Palin tried to link Obama to the failure of housing giant Fannie Mae by noting that two Obama supporters once led the troubled company. The government seized Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, another housing finance company, last month to prevent their collapse from worsening the global credit crisis.

Link....

Is that a piece of journalism or an editorial?!

I was speaking to a young lady co-worker earlier. I know she's at least leaning 0bama if not flat out for him. I mentioned the debate tonight, to which she said she'd be missing it since she has tickets to a show, but she'd have to be sure to see the last one. So I told her she'd be able to see tonight's debate on youtube later most likely or somewhere else on the web.

Then I took my shot- I told her I was so glad we lived in a country where sexist attacks were politically acceptable and I looked forward to never electing a woman to office. She agreed with me about the sexism in our society being stronger than she thought it was before. Hopefully, she'll start thinking more about that. I have a couple weeks yet to really get her on our side. Wish me luck.

re: #328 HoosierHoops
Hey Hoops - well I'm up and I'm down. Gotta watch it on TV instead of being out here with my peeps and I'm still not convinced that McCain is gonna go after Obama for his lack of any plan to deal with the economy and instead jump up and down on the "judgment issue" (Ayers, Rezko, et.al.) - not that it doesn't deserve to be jumped on, but the American voters have always voted their pocketbooks and McCain has to put the "blame" for this where it properly belongs: On the Dem Congress and Dem President who gave us the Community Reinvestiment Act which CREATED the entire Sub-Prime mess by making lenders loan to poor credit risks. And I hope he smacks down good ole Barney Franks and Christopher Dodd who were at least as much asleep at the switch as was Treasury and the FDIC about this mess.
Crap - I'm tense about this debate.

re: #307 LockeStockandBarrel

The Odinga story on Obama is by far the most insanely outrageous, and damaging thing I have ever seen any politician do while in office. With tax payer money Obama went to Kenya with a bull-horn to incite crowds to essentially riot and burn down villages. Odinga is Obama's cousin who lost an election. Obama went to help community organize strong arm to get the losers to revolt. And revolt they did.

The Ayes connection is just static from a distant thunder storm. The Odinga thing is a direct hit from a lightning bolt that will vaporize the already vacuous and empty suited Obama.

re: #332 MJBrutus

Since this debate is on the economy, I'm not sure how McCain is going to manage any references to Ayer-head.

But he can nail his Obamessiah's ass on:

The Association of COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS for Reform Now (ACORN).

He could bring up Ayers fairly easily in an economic debate. Ayers, whom views public education as a mean to indoctrinate children with Critical Race Theory and Teaching for Social Justice, which are both thinly veiled euphemisms and extrapolations of Karl Marx's Class Struggle Theory, selected Obama as his surrogate in distributing grant money for improving education in a way that apparently Ayer's viewed as being consistent with this agenda (and it was exactly what Obama actually funded, and taught as a lecturer to college students.)

This entire belief system is rooted in the economy, and the inherent iniquity of capitalism. Obama's economic policies are not only naive and dangerous, but are rooted in a fundamental belief that free markets of any kind are evil and need to be eliminated. His stance on education is to teach this to children as soon as they can be shoved into public schools. Why exactly would he want to teach children about the evils of Capitalism, and the necessity for its destruction, if he doesn't actually believe it himself?

It might be a stretch, and I doubt that McCain will bring up Ayers, but it is certainly pertinent in any discussion about the economy.

Mac seems to have the momentum at the moment, he's been closing the gap for a few days. I don't think tonight's all that critical unless he blunders catastrophically.

453 Florida Lady  Tue, Oct 7, 2008 4:33:26pm

btw, I worked the phone banks at the local McCain/Palin HQ today.

Although I was calling SW Florida absentee voters today (GOP country), the list was a mix of Repubs, Dems, & independents.

Out of 200 calls I made, about 70% went to a voice mail or answering machine.

But of those I did contact, 3 were undecided, 1 was for Obama, 2-3 declined to state who they'd vote for. The rest were for McCain/Palin . . . mostly Palin, to be honest.

Again, the older ladies seem to be the ones who love Palin - and they vote.

Not scientific, I know, but I'll take good news where I can find it.
