Pre-Debate Thread 2, with Live Streaming

Politics | Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 5:00:16 pm PDT

So far this C-SPAN live stream is working very well at Lizard HQ. Let’s hope it doesn’t bog down too much when the debate kicks off.

UPDATE at 10/7/08 5:07:17 pm:

Allen Forkum (of the lamented cartoon duo Cox and Forkum) emailed a photo from the Belmont University campus, with Troofers...

Has this been posted yet?: ACORN office in Vegas raided in voter-fraud probe

AWESOME!

Secretary of State Ross Miller said the raid was part of a monthslong voter fraud investigation of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which he said submitted fraudulent registrations, including forms for the starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys football team.

"Tony Romo is not registered to vote in the state of Nevada, and anybody trying to pose as Terrell Owens won't be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 4," Miller said.

Good grief!

The notion that Obama hangin' with an unapologetic domestic terrorist is somehow not important to voters is ridiculous. You can see the desperation on the faces of democrat talking heads as they scoff at McCain's "dumb" refusal to stay "focused" on the economy.

Obama and his minions know that once the Ayers, Wright, Phleger, and Rezko associations sink in, he's toast.

My concern is the Dems have already been driving in the point that the economy is all Bushes fault. They have been pushing it for 10 days now.

It's set in the boomers mind now. If McCain is going to overcome that, he has to be spot on tonight.

And the MSM has already set the mood over the last week. Anything that McCain says is going to be called "nasty."

Who would have thought that Obama's foreign handlers could drive the market down enough to swing the polls what, 10 points in a week. I am capitulating. Not watching debate. Logging off now. Can't fight it anymore.

If they think the market is in the tank now, wait and see what happens to the market if Obama is elected. We will skip right over recession, and into depression.

I moved my 401k in to a safe fund after the 1st Bailout Bill vote. My account is holding it's value. I'm going to wait until well after inauguration day (whoever wins) before going back in to the market.

The markets have a tendency to be too emotional without good reason. All the assets represented by the stocks are worth the same amount as they were 2 weeks ago. If I had a nest egg, I'd be on a buying spree for undervalued stocks right now. Selling on a downturn turns a mere paper loss into a real loss. Unless the company is really dying, why would you sell for less than you bought?

From Wiki on Valerie Jarrett who was born in Iran:

Jarrett is one of Senator Obama's longest serving advisors and "closest campaign aide[s] – an insider widely tipped for a top position in an Obama administration. "[9][10]

Unlike Burt Lance, who arrived from Georgia with President [Jimmy] Carter and became his budget director, or Karen Hughes, who was President [George W.] Bush's communications manager, Ms. Jarrett isn't a confidante with a particular portfolio. What she does share with these counterparts is a fierce sense of loyalty and a refusal to publicly say anything that may reflect poorly on the candidate — or steal his thunder.— Belkin[9]

McCain needs to:
1- explain the sitch to include pointing fingers and naming names with proof ( not hard to do).Include the 17 times the white house warned congress since 2001, and the 2 bills trying to regulate.
2-Explain how allowing the people who corrupted the system to attempt to fix it is a sure fire way to f-it up more.
3-Explain RAISING taxes now will send us into the dark ages.
4-Say he will freeze spending - slash taxes across the board and NAME a few in particular.
5-Stay on point ...HAMMER EVERY point over and over.

I don't think we should raise the bar too high for McCain.

There's still much time left after tonight. Even if he scores a clear win, what's that good for? A 2-4 day bump in the polls (which I don't believe anyway)?

We need to hit the highpoint 2 days before the election. By the way, I'll go out on a huge limb and predict a McCain landslide in November.

I just cannot bring myself to believe this country has enough malignant and ignorant voters to elect an anti-American radical President of the United States.

It is an SNL sketch that remarkably tears down the Democrat party, but has been pulled from the NBC website... more info on the politics of it in the Newsbuster link (commented on the video)

I'd be happy if he just used a hammer and relived all this tension

That's odd. McCain counts on it. Usually with success. Ask Obama.

McCain is a fighter, one who survived 4 years in a hell hole under conditions that would of killed a lessor man like Obama. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. In that case McCain is a giant of a man especially when compared to Obama. The media is doing its best to cast Republicans as the cause of the current crises, but unfortunately the facts state the Democrats were the ones who precipitated the crises. The conservative blogs and talk radio is going all out in fighting the lies of the MSM. Stand fast mates and we will beat these guys. I predict a landslide for McCain. Americans are not suckers or the dummies the MSM and Democrats are playing us for. Death to the tyrants! Yaaaar!

re: #137 Ward Cleaver

Hey Shiplord! How's Lubbock?

/and you too?

Still soggy. The City of Lubbock has spent more than $100 million on storm drainage and flood control in the last 15 years and there are still many, many streets that flood if it rains for 10 minutes. This is in a city with just 23 inches of rainfall during an average year. During the big rain last month, I drove my car into 4 feet of water, doing $1100 worth of damage. I was lucky at that, Lexus parts are expensive.

This happened at a major intersection in an industrial area that is a main artery for truck traffic. The city administration probably wonders why trucking companies and distributors don't want to locate here.

The weird traffic cultist who ran the city redlights retired last month, but the Famous Forever Lights have not yet been changed. It is amazing to sit at a red light for two minutes at 3AM in the middle of nowhere. Visitors notice this kind of idiocy before anything else. It is not a deal-breaker for new business (though it does waste a lot of time) but it does help convince them that the city is run by drooling idiots and gibbering fools, which of course it is.

On a brighter note, the Red Raiders are winning big. Last week, ESPN droid Lee Corso picked Kansas State over Tech as his "upset special of the week." According to this sage of the gridiron, Tech was "overrated" and had played "nobody." K-State fans picked this up and chanted "overrated! overrated!" as the Raiders entered the field.
Final: Texas Tech 58, K-State 28.

Polls are BS, here's why:

1. Polls are public, at least 2 persons; more may be listening to the respondent's answer and influencing it. The ballot is secret.

2. Polls may be worded in tricky ways, the ballot is simple.

3. The reporting of polls may be spun, the tally of ballots is simple.

4. You can lie to a pollster, you cannot lie to the ballot.

5. Polls may have varying motivations, the ballot has only one: select the candidate.

6. Polls come to you; you have to get up off your ass to go vote.

Best of luck TPP. I agree with you that dollar-cost averaging and holding for the long term is a good strategy and that American biz will eventually roar back. I think that a wee bit of market timing based on some predictable factors can pay off pretty big.

A large man with a clipboard came up and asked if they were registered. The mother said she was and the daughter was not. He tried to register her twice and finally the mother said "She is too young to vote." He asked if she was sure she was too old and the mother told him she was only 14. He said "That's not necessarily too young."

The mother then said she had already decided on her vote and he asked what the decision was. She said Republican, he asked why and she moved to leave the shop. He took a step in front of her to block the path, thought better of it, and let her pass.

I guess that is all a part of the "get in their face" strategy.

re: #253 Shiplord Kirel

Georgia has an idiotic traffic light system that gives the same weighting to side streets as the main artery backing up traffic for a half mile during rush hour. 30 minutes to travel 13 miles on side roads and 20 to travel 17 on the interstate on my daily commute. Yaar, fracken' bozos!

Because I think that we're going much lower. I sold for a loss, but only half the loss I would have now if I were holding my stock funds. And far less than half the loss that I would see if I'm right about where we're going in the next 6 months to a year. I predict we'll see DOW 7500 before we see 10000 again. I think the bargains will be had next summer at the soonest and plan to go back in by then.

I have sold for a "loss"—getting back more than I paid, but far less than the stock was recently worth—because I had a sudden life-threatening health problem and paying immediately was the cheapest way overall. When I said I would be looking for bargains, at this point I would be looking for stocks to hold for several years. The market is far too volatile to trust in any quick profit schemes—stocks are up and down, up and down from minute to minute right now with the general trend being headed down.

And others:

Polls are BS, here's why:

1. Polls are public, at least 2 persons; more may be listening to the respondent's answer and influencing it. The ballot is secret.

2. Polls may be worded in tricky ways, the ballot is simple.

3. The reporting of polls may be spun, the tally of ballots is simple.

4. You can lie to a pollster, you cannot lie to the ballot.

5. Polls may have varying motivations, the ballot has only one: select the candidate.

6. Polls come to you; you have to get up off your ass to go vote.

Another thing. Palin spoke here in Jacksonville, Florida this morning. The place was packed. There were people waiting outside hours in advance to get in, and they had to actually turn people away some while before the thing actually began because the was already full.

Jacksonville is a large, important city.

John Glenn is on Obama's staff? What the hell? ANd to think I was once inspired by the video of him in orbit and the "Godspeed John Glenn" from the control booth.

FU John Glenn.

Here in OH, Glenn ran for the Senate in '74 vs. Howard "I Hate Everybody" Metzenbaum, and beat his a$$ like a gong in the primary- especially after Humble Howard made the brilliant remark that Glenn, a Marine Corps Colonel and Korean war fighter pilot, had "never held a steady job"- thereby pissing off every veteran in the state. Glenn was OK for two years- then, when Metzenbaum won re-election in'76, suddenly all Glenn was was Howard's rubber stamp. Especially on anti-gun issues, in spite of being a Life Member of the NRA.

I voted for Glenn in '80. Never after that. And wrote him , and told him why, too. (Politely.)

I can only assume that there's something in the air, or water, or maybe the bean soup in the Senate Lunchroom, that turns anyone who spends any amount of time there into a fricking Manchurian Candidate. Even a genuine American hero like John Herschel Glenn.

/Fortunately, so far it hasn't seemed to bother another genuine American hero, John S. McCain Jr.

cheers

I'd suggest you don't worry about the polls.

a) The samples are heavily skewed to the left

b) The media has displayed a habit of ignoring polls that don't skew left

c) Considering the boost from the media, Obama should be up by at least 20. That he's not is very bad news -- for him.

One of those has 20% of GOP voting Obama. something is rotten in Denmark

re: #320 NomadOfNorad

Another thing. Palin spoke here in Jacksonville, Florida this morning. The place was packed. There were people waiting outside hours in advance to get in, and they had to actually turn people away some while before the thing actually began because the was already full.

Jacksonville is a large, important city.

On the other hand, they're saying now that Florida is up for grabs. Oh?

I'm not really worried about FL at all. Too many active and retired military as well as just plain old conservatives all over the state . . . except for Palm Beach/Broward/Miami-Dade counties . . . and a little bit around Orlando and Tallahassee.

Don't forget in 2000 - even though Bush won by 537 votes, many in the Panhandle, who are in the Central Time Zone, were disenfranchised by our buddy Dan Rather calling Florida for Algore early.

That was a 20,000 vote lead for Bush all by itself that got squashed.

And Bush won Florida in 2004 by 400,000 or so.

Ill say it again . . . Unless the crazy SE of Florida has 110% voter turnout, the Sunshine State goes for McCain.

Bank on it.

Thanks. I needed that;)

Zogby even said that it would be close between Obama and McCain through October, but would tilt strongly in favor of McCain, with McCain winning in a surprising landslide.

re: #423 arizona9

Well, I'm scared. Not so much of the McCain's performance but the media(aka Obabma's cheerleaders)response to the debate. There is simply nothing McCain can do that will get him good reviews from the MSM. If he's too hot and passionate, there will be the 'crazy old man' mantra. If he is too reserved it will be the 'dottering old man that doesn't understand the American people's righteous anger' mantra. UGh. Shuster today was blaming Palin for what one person in the crowd of 10,000 said. I hate these people with the burning of a thousand suns.
Someone quick...give me something to cheer me up..

There's nothing that can be done about that. They have proven in the past two debates (presidential and vice-presidential) that it doesn't matter how the Republican does - it's pre-deterimined that Obama and Biden win. That's just how they are.

I just hope McCain doesn't go too "nice, bi-partisan guy" tonight. The other day, I saw a clip of him defending Palin to a reporter in Iowa, and while he wasn't in a rage he was strong and forceful and even a little sarcastic...and it was AWESOME.

I'm praying for him. I hope he finds some good openings to put Obama on the defensive, and I hope he's successful in letting people know the origin of this ecomomic situation.

re: #255 NC State of Mind

I think it had something to do with the re entry.

I hate being reminded of what he became. He was my hero. I will never forget his historic launch/recovery for as long as I live. I still remember having waffles for breakfast that day - made on one of those really old fashioned waffle irons with the black/white striped cloth cords and the red light that went off when they were done - the TV with the oval screen.Man... in fact it's one of my earliest and most cherished memories. And he f*cked it all up. I remember when he fell getting out of his shower - think that was the first chink in the armor, downhill from there on. No wonder we were such a confused generation ! I also remember, at a later age, when I first was able to really appreciate what these guys were doing - getting in a tin foil pup tent atop of the worlds biggest roman candle - wondering about the fine line between bravery and just plain crazy. Guess what I ultimately decided on ! Wonder why ?
**This is keeping my mind off the tension/anxiety of waiting on what may prove to be the most crucial night of this election campaign - let alone the last 50 years or so.
Ben just "did" Mrs. Robinson...T.M.C. Those were the days...
"Plastics !"
C'mon 9 o'clock !

In THOSE jug ears?

Bone conduction mike. Back of the neck, over the clavicle (collarbone).

Or maybe there's somebody up in the ceiling framing with big cue cards like Johnny Carson used to have.

Of course, he never read them off, in fact the guy holding them during the monologue had trouble changing them fast enough to keep up with Carson's rapid-fire delivery.

/I've always suspected they were mainly for Ed McMahon and Doc Sevrinsen's
benefit

The Bottom Line:

McCain is the original (Lon Chaney) Phantom of the Opera. And he can't reach a high note because he represents the core Democrat platform of five-ten years ago. That is the platform of the current republican party.

Obama is a grown up Webster, just a Socialist-Marxist version. Obama is more mixed up than Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. I wouldn't be shocked if there is a pit in his basement. His logo be a butterfly superimposed over the slogan "ObamaNation: the Emperor has No Clothes".

The fact that a glorified school committe member is the most qualified candidate of the 4 on the ticket to be President speaks NOTHING of her abilities and EVERYTHING about the vacuum among the other three.

I will be watching tonight with a bottle of Patron Gold on my lap.

Question: What three things do Wright and Ayers have in common?
1. A belief that America deserves to be destroyed (damned, blown up, same thing)
2. A life dedicated to instilling that belief in the next generation.
3. Extensive time with Barack Obama just before and after he ran for office.

Significant? I think so.

Peace is a two-way street, nimrod. You can't have peace with people who don't want it. Not putting up a fight isn't peace, it's suicide.

God I wish I was there to confront these loonies in person.

I did get to chat with a looney here in --- believe it or not --- Denton County, Texas last night. Crazy lady started screaming at me at a light last night that I was a racist warmonger and to keep my hands off her uterus. This based completely on my McCain Palin bumpersticker. Madame VW driver's Jetta was plastered with Obama stickers - and had a license plate holder from Redwood City.

To quote my favorite Brian Burns song: Welcome to Texas ... don't forget to go back home.
