The Obama Campaign's Veterans' Scorecard

Politics | Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 2:30:00 pm PDT

The Obama campaign is releasing a “scorecard” on the candidates, from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), as proof that veterans should be supporting Obama.

John Lilyea has discovered some interesting things about IAVA—including the fact that a founding member is now the Barack Obama campaign’s Veterans Director: Well! Color me shocked! (is the sarcasm filter on?)

More details:
Why I am cancelling my IAVA membership immediately PART I
Senate to IAVA: I can haz skorecardz 2?

That ad was published in our local paper. Today a Vietnam vet's letter to the editor questioning the ad was published.

When a "nonpartisan" group issues a "report" and it favors a candidate it from henceforth inherently biased.

...their founding member is now the Barack Obama campaign’s Veterans Director...

Happy news, everyone. I've just been shortlisted by the Obama campaign for their new position as Broke People Director.

Granted, it's not a paying gig. And I have about 300 million competitors. But my qualifications are impeccable.

6 Ward Cleaver  Wed, Oct 8, 2008 2:33:26pm

This is like being supported by the IVAW.

7 Charles  Wed, Oct 8, 2008 2:33:32pm

By the way, I'm very leery of this report about Barack Obama and the "New Party," a socialist organization. It seems to be originating from Larry Johnson Land, and I won't go there.

So these partisan Veterans think Obama is more supportive of them and their cause? More supportive than a man who went through what McCain did? How exactly? because he is against the war? while they are fighting it?

What the heck?

12 jaunte  Wed, Oct 8, 2008 2:35:18pm

From the second link:
"I noticed some real “luminaries” in the veteran’s movement with solid voting scores: Baghdad Jim McDermott got an A. Maxine Waters got an A. Dennis Kucinich got an A. Jim Marshall (the guy who is in the Ranger Hall of Fame, visited the troops more than 99% of other Members of Congress, and who has an open door policy for veterans) well, he got a B. Duncan Hunter got a C."

Actually, I'm pretty sure that he is a complete egomaniac. Sort of like his idol, Jimmy Carter.

Which means he won't ask for advice from anyone even when he needs it, and everyone else knows he needs it.

If it weren't for the potential for catastrophe, watching him execute an Epic Fail in any crisis that comes down the pike would almost be amusing. Rather like Zaphod Beeblebrox;

Zaphod; "They want to arrest me over the phone? Could be, I'm a pretty dangerous dude when I'm cornered."

Ford; "Oh, yeah, you go to pieces so fast that people around you get hit with the shrapnel."

NEWS FLASH

Sean Hannity just interviewed Jerome Corsi who traveled to Kenya this week to further research his book "Obama Nation". While there he was hauled in by Kenyan immigration, detained then put on a plane to London. His interview with Hannity was via phone from London.....

Corsi says he has documented proof of collaboration between Obama and Odingo! He has exchanges of emails (apparently through a third party email account in New Jersey) and signed documents of Obama giving Odingo campaign advise. In the discussion was the question of "what if Odingo loses the election" and Obama talking about using the Muslim faction in Kenya to riot and claim fraud.

This could be devestating if true.. Corsi will appear live, on Hannity's tv show Monday night 9:00 PM EST.

Sarah Palin is absolutely bringin' down the house right now in Strongsville, Ohio. And she just introduced our (the Browns) quarterback of the future, Brady Quinn, who in turn introduced John McCain. I noticed that almost everything he had his name on, including that, was listed as Sess Sine Die (discharged without debate at end of session), meaning that either;

1. The Senate adjourned without even bringing it to the floor, or

2. He launched a flurry of last-minute-before-adjournment "bills" to give the impression that he actually did something to earn his salary.

Considering the number that had to do with housing, minority business loans, etc., (which read across to his antics with Ayers), my guess is that those were his major concerns, the rest being just fluff.

And apparently, nobody else in the Illinois State Senate was interested.

While I've never been in the miltary, I find it almost laughable that anyone in the armed forces could seriously throw their support behind Obama.

1. Obama's never been in the military.
2. Doesn't pal around with anyone who's ever been in the military
3. I'm not certain, but I'm sure his political record stinks in terms of supporting the military
4. He was against the surge and failed to give credit to the US military when they turned things around
6. What do Obama and Osama Bin Laden have in common? They both worked with people who bombed the pentagon (enough said)
7. He made 45 trips to Ohio, but only two to Iraq
8. His politcal party is infested with anti-war leftists who have spit on soldiers and try to block the entrance of military recruiting centers
9. Never took the time to visit wounded verterans, except when cameras were around
10. Hangs out with Hollywood types who only portray soldiers as either sadistic killers or bamboozled victims

Anything else?

re: #141 Son of the Black Dog

Good quote from the article.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Derriel D. Collins, who is black, said he was influenced by McCain’s service record, though he acknowledges black friends question his decision.

“I’m not going to give [my vote] to you just because you’re black,” he said. “It doesn’t work like that.”

“John McCain went to war for this country, even though he had an admiral father who probably could have gotten him out of the service,” Collins said. “He stuck it out five years in a prisoner of war camp. If that ain’t fortitude, showing your willingness to go all the way, I don’t know what the credentials are.”

I'm not sure what the historical rate is as far as military election preferences, but I thought this bit was key as well:

“The military has been perceived as a conservative Republican institution,” said Peter Feaver, a political science professor at Duke University and a special adviser to the National Security Council from 2005 to 2007.

“A lot of people thought that eight years of frustration with the Bush administration was going to undermine that,” he said. “This evidence suggests that it hasn’t undermined it as much as they thought, at least not yet.”

Here is the paragraph from the New Party website that has been scrubbed but is in the archives:

New Party members and supported candidates won 16 of 23 races, including an at-large race for the Little Rock, Ark., City Council, a seat on the county board for Little Rock and the school board for Prince George's County, Md. Chicago is sending the first New Party member to Congress, as Danny Davis, who ran as a Democrat, won an overwhelming 85% victory. New Party member Barack Obama was uncontested for a State Senate seat from Chicago.

On the other hand:
"When Obama met with ACORN leaders in November, he reminded them of his history with ACORN and his beginnings in Illinois as a Project Vote organizer, a nonprofit focused on voter rights and education. Senator Obama said, "I come out of a grassroots organizing background. That's what I did for three and half years before I went to law school. That's the reason I moved to Chicago was to organize. So this is something that I know personally, the work you do, the importance of it. I've been fighting alongside ACORN on issues you care about my entire career. Even before I was an elected official, when I ran Project Vote voter registration drive in Illinois, ACORN was smack dab in the middle of it, and we appreciate your work.”

re: #158 MandyManners

Wow. BHO's campaign is a cluster-fuck for reporters.

Reminds me very much of the Clinton White House, as described in Unlimited Access by Gary Aldrich. The White House cleaning staff was appalled by the mess they made throughout the building.

And exactly none of them ever showed up for an appointment on time;

With the coming of the new administration, Marty Black, a wonderful, polite, calm, and competent executive secretary, was assigned to work for Phil Lader, the Clinton management guru and father of the annual "Renaissance Weekend".

I needed to interview Lader. After days and days of unreturned phone calls and missed appointments, I complained to Marty and told her that FBI headquarters was harassing me because I couldn't close the case without interviewing Lader. Marty shocked me when she let loose with, "Gary, just tell your FBI headquarters that it is very hard to make and keep appointments, or do other normal things, when you are so f---ing smart!

"You see, Gary, when you are brilliant like Lader and the rest of these Clinton people are, you don't have to follow the rules that all of us mere idiots follow!"

I did eventually get the interview with Lader. He was so slick that I almost slid out the door after we talked.

Like David Watkins, Mack McLarty, and others close to the president and first lady, he made me think, "Here's another guy I shouldn't turn my back on." Marty retired soon after my meeting with Lader. She told me, "I just can't take these Clinton people any more." I was sorry to see her go.

-Unlimited Access, by Gary Aldrich, chapter 3, "So What? (Part One)", p.44

It sounds like history may be about to repeat itself, in more ways than one.

I'd take all of it over the migraines. A loss of 20 hours every month sucks! And the pain makes me want to gouge my left eye out with a spoon. I've only wished migraines on one person - Osama Bin Laden! Other than that, it's a punishment worse than death - or at least it seems so for those 20 hours!

Try having migraines 3-5 days a week every week regardless of . presence and having to function normally with them.

I've tried it all. Imitrex - nothing. Caffeine - doesn't hurt, but no cure. An ice pack to the head does help me survive, but that's about it. If anyone has a magic cure, I'll mention you in my will!

There are other triptan drugs besides Imitrex. Imitrex does nothing for me, but Relpax works.

Have you tried any of the other drugs?

You'd be surprised. If I had to guess, I'd say the percentages in my unit are probably somewhat higher for McCain than the 68% quoted in that poll, but nowhere near 100%. Somewhere in the 80s, probably.

And no, I have no earthly idea why any of them are supporting Obama.

I would wager that a majority of the service members and family who support Obama do so in protest of OPTEMPO. Which is disappointing. You make a commitment and instead of following through with it you subvert it by other means.

I searched for, and couldn't find it, but there was a news article about an idiot who went to Washington with fellow idiots protesting their upcoming deployment. What you could pull out of the article (which was conveniently omitted) was he had been in the Army for over six years. I wasn't army, but I'd wager that the number of 6 year contracts are few. So, he enlisted post war. He reenlisted during war, and just now realized that he'd have to deploy again!?! I could understand guys on their first enlistment being broadsided, not fully comprehending the commitment they promise to keep. It's those chuckleheads who re-up, and would rather skirt their responsibility via the voting booth rather than separate because they are too chicken shit to follow through on their commitment and all the while don't want to give up the bennies really torque me.

I would take 2tablets of Frosst 222...(Canadian pill) but should be available under another name in USA
With 375 mg ASA
With 8, mg codeine
With 30 mg caffeine

as soon as I felt the aura, the sensation a headach was going to happen.I would not leave the house without them for years

then the hedaches stopped...my niece get them also, as did my father

I don't get the aura. Mine are purely hormonal - Bring on menopause!

If the individual in question was in the Guard or Reserve, that doesn't necessarily indicate a reenlistment.

Everyone who joins the military today (since about 1985, as I recall) has a total obligation of 8 years. If you serve 3 or 4 years on active duty, the other 4 or 5 years are spent in either the IRR or in a Guard or Reserve unit.

I think most people who have migraines that are not hormanally triggered are probably wheat and/or dairy triggered. It has to do with the intestine being damaged and allowing the proteins from wheat and dairy directly into the blood stream. The proteins then go to the brain and trigger the migraine. These proteins known as gluteomorphine and cassieomorphine (sp?[cassein]) are also one of the reasons that children with autism are so spaced out. Take them out of the diet and no more space cadettes.

Hmmmm

The beginning?
snip:

The other day in Albuquerque, N.M., the reporters were given almost no time to file their reports after McCain spoke. It was an important, aggressive speech, lambasting Obama's past associations. When we asked for more time to write up his remarks and prepare our reports, the campaign readily agreed to it. They understood.

Similar requests are often denied or ignored by the Obama campaign aides, apparently terrified that the candidate may have to wait 20 minutes to allow reporters to chronicle what he's just said. It's made all the more maddening when we are rushed to our buses only to sit and wait for 30 minutes or more because nobody seems to know when Obama is actually on the move.

Maybe none of this means much. Maybe a front-running campaign like Obama's that is focused solely on victory doesn't have the time to do the mundane things like print up schedules or attend to the needs of reporters.

But in politics, everything that goes around comes around.

Found the article. IRR or Guard wasn't a problem in this story. Even then, a problem with the IRR is the fault of the service member. It is written in the contract. I remember flagging that part of my contract to ask questions on it when I enlisted.

I've been looking at today's market numbers. I truly think we would have ended up with positive numbers if Paulson had just kept his big mouth shut. Instead, with about an hour to go before the bell, Paulson gives a speech somewhere talking about how bad everything is and that bad mouthing scared the market a bit and you got the sell off.

I think we are primed for a big snap back in the market sometime in the next 3 trading days. I think the bottom has been found now, and we will actually start to hear some good news for a change.

People are still scared green, and it will take a while for the effects of the bail out and the commercial paper buy to start really being felt, but I am starting to see a glimmer of some life back in the market today.

The stocks are so cheap that some people are putting their toes back in the water.

371 logboy  Wed, Oct 8, 2008 4:29:00pm

As a proud veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom I would sooner cut off the one arm I have left than vote for Obama. He has no clue what it is like to go to war and risk his life for someone or something other than himself. Hearing him speak about how he cares for veterans reminds me way too much of the time I bumped into Hillary on my way to therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (during the congressional hearings on our lack of care). After talking to her for 5 minutes I could tell she didn't give a rats ass about me or the other veterans, she was just looking for a way to spin things in her favor. Unfortunately Obama sounds the same way too me (how will this benefit him?) McCain's track record in the military speaks for itself. Any man who survived being tortured 5 1/2 years in a POW camp and repeatedly turned down early release for those captured before him has my vote. Obama getting elected scares the hell out of me because I know myself and the rest of the vets are going to get shit on.

Here's some good economic news for a change:

Pending home sales index rises 7.4% in August: NAR

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Despite the credit crunch gripping the U.S. economy, the National Association of Realtors reported Wednesday that an index of sales contracts on previously owned homes rose 7.4% in August from the prior month.
The index, considered a leading indicator of existing-home sales, was up 8.8% from August 2007. It's unclear to what extent contract activity will be affected by the credit disruptions on Wall Street, said Lawrence Yun, NAR's chief economist, in a statement.
Pending home sales for August rose in all four of the regions tracked by the NAR.
Gains amounted to 18.4% in the West, 8.4% in the Northeast, 3.6% in the Midwest and 2.3% in the South.

After 6 straight days of sell offs, I really think we got a sanp back coming tomorrow.

Just keep Paulson and Bernanke away from microphones.

I'll still be around, I usually wake up about 4:30 am (which realwest can testify too, I'm often bugging him with an email about then)

I never really intended to retire in terms of not work. I just retired from one career, and now am starting a new one. I figure I got a good 15 to 20 years left on this old carcass.

You got a cup on?

"The heart, Ramon, the heart. Always go for the heart."

Me and Clint always have the cup handy.

Roger that. I've already remembered you and all those who serve, as well as those who wait. I did early voting yesterday!

Same here. Wife and I got our absentee ballots Saturday, and sent them back already.

Ahhhh little grasshopper. Come sit at my feet and i'll try to explain .

In Low Intensity Warfare operations one does many things that appear to be counter-intuitive.
Speak quietly to ONe part of a group and hive them off. Divide and rule and then when it suits you knife the one you bought off in the back and install your own man.

Go ask Perfidious Albion and they will tell you how they did this for 300 years and scored an empire to boot!

Sure sounds great, cept Hussein is in charge of the kill buttons - otherwise have no objection.

I'm in real estate. The investors are getting active. Always a leading indicator. Same thing happened in 1990 as we started to climb out of that little depression in housing in flyover country.

I often play with a 3 wood, 5 wood, 9 wood, 5, 7 and 9 irons and a putter.

Shot a 77 last week with exactly that mix. Most golfers carry way too many clubw. Learn how to add or take of loft off the club by moving your hands a little bit and you can do without half of them. Makes you a more creative golfer too.

One of the best lessons I ever got was to play a round with just a 7 iron and a putter. I played the ball way back in my stance and teed off with the 7 iron like it was a 2 iron.

Made me a much better golfer that way.

re: #258 Russkilitlover

I've tried it all. Imitrex - nothing. Caffeine - doesn't hurt, but no cure. An ice pack to the head does help me survive, but that's about it. If anyone has a magic cure, I'll mention you in my will!

Topamax see if it will work for you it supposed to keep em from happening. or tegretol, slows down the neural firing, and blunts the nervous systems ability to feel pain. Talk to your neurologist. if you don't have a neuro, get one.

Indeed. Please see my #368! (I don't like referring people back to my posts, but I so rarely get anywhere near the end of posting on a thread to make a point which others haven't made yet! - slow thinker, slower typist!).

I hear you true west!

As someone said senior NCOs might run the army but it's the officers who do the deals that pay dividends in saved soldiers' lives.

Being a former G2 we are well versed in the 'black arts' of dealing with scum. turning them on their former friends and using them instead of the guys in white hats as cannon fodder. then when it suits applying the stiletto between the shoulder blades (both figuratively and occasionally actually) and installing a glove puppet of our own.

The Brits were past masters at the art! hehehe :)

You did not shoot a 77! really a 77?
I am so friggin jealous! I will never shoot a 77...ok ok have faith!
but a 77?

re: #432 3 wood

Excellent. I've tossed the 3 and the 4, maybe I'll keep tossing. You are about 10-12 strokes a round better than I am, but I pay rarely. I score with grim honesty though. Learned that when I was in a men's club for a few years.

Gotta hit the road all, might see you later tonight.

Ahhh little grasshopper. I can only advise you on what needs to be done. Putting a tool in a position of power is a problem for you and your fellow citizens. If one wants and insists on shooting oneself in the foot then there is little to do from outside except shake one's head and the folly!

Go fix the problem in a month!

Yep. I missed a couple short birdie putts or it would have been a bit better.

Sloppy score I know, but hopefully I'll do better tomorrow.

I'm taking my buddy realwest for a round at my favorite course to celebrate the new gig.

I still think TFK should run the SEC. Wouldn't be any fraudulent lending with a man of integrity like him in charge.

Gotta run folks.

Later.

Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director of IAVA has a book out and guess what:

An Operation Iraqi Freedom vet and founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Rieckhoff recounts his journey from National Guard lieutenant to disillusioned patriot in this disappointing combat memoir-cum-polemic. Rieckhoff admits that he thought the reasons for invading Iraq were "bullshit," but volunteered to go anyway. His experiences in Iraq—patrolling the chaotic streets of Baghdad in the months after its occupation—only confirmed his initial judgment that the invasion "was one of the greatest foreign policy mistakes in our nation's history." Rieckhoff is anything but humble.

Yep, he's just another anti-war tool.

Anything coming from Obama is a big fat lie and I choose to believe this is no different. A veteran from one war cannot be overshadowed by a wimp.
Just saying.
