VDH: Line of the Day

Opinion | Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 3:04:21 pm PDT

Victor Davis Hanson gets the line of the day: What Is Wisdom?

Perhaps salmon fishing or moose-hunting might have been of value in reifying the more abstract wisdom found in Niebuhr.

Bad memories of having to slog through his stuff in a college theology class.

What is wisdom?

In this lizard's case it is to avoid having so much faith in the system/markets that your entire net worth is wiped out in about two weeks.

Too bad I only got the wisdom after the fact.

One reason Obama reads Niebuhr:

"Niebuhr was born in Missouri in 1892, the son of a German-born minister of the German Evangelical Synod of North America. He was trained for the ministry at the Synod's Eden Theological Seminary and at the Yale Divinity School. In the 1920's he took a church in industrial Detroit, the scene of bitter labor-capital conflict. Niebuhr's sympathies lay with the unions, and he joined Norman Thomas's Socialist Party."
...
"Niebuhr was a critic of national innocence, which he regarded as a delusion. After all, whites coming to these shores were reared in the Calvinist doctrine of sinful humanity, and they killed red men, enslaved black men and later on imported yellow men for peon labor - not much of a background for national innocence. "Nations, as individuals, who are completely innocent in their own esteem," Niebuhr wrote, "are insufferable in their human contacts."

The article was a good read, but that was not the line of the day.

Line of the day still goes to Rush for saying, "Palin and Yosemite Sam are having a raucous town hall."

I have found in my 50+ years, that any writer who uses words that the average person needs to look up in a dictionary, is writing above his pay grade and has absolutely no clue what the hell he/she is writing about.

They are usually just spouting some sort or propaganda line and had to look up new words to define it.

About the only thing you can do with bluefish is smoke them. We do the same here in CT. They are some oily fish. But if done right, low and slow with just a hint of smoke, they are fine.

It's not just a matter of being clueless (though they are). It's the Mt. Rushmore-sized double standard they apply in favor of Democrats.

If Biden was a Repub, they'd be saying he was insane, off his meds, couldn't figure out how to put his socks on in the morning, that the strokes had crippled him, et cetera. But this key-punching a-hole sits there with a straight face and emits his great wisdom, that the inability to temper your speech is ADMIRABLE? All because it serves the Greater Goal of electing Dear Leader.

I know they do this all the time. I know this double- (and in the case of female or black republicans, TRIPLE-) standard has been SOP for these clowns for decades. But it never ceases to amaze me just how far they will bend over, and how much of a knot they will tie themselves into, to excuse or re-write the story of any Democrat's character flaw, no matter how grievous or damaging.

Much as I loathe the clown (and I have done so for over three decades), I have to admit that Biden is the most useful idiot on the left. Mainly because you can always count on Joe the Mouth to blurt out whatever his party's leaders are really up to, even or especially when they'd rather you didn't know what they had in mind until it was too late.

I've never been too sure whether Biden does it to prove he's "the smartest guy in the room", or just as a way of rubbing everyone else's nose in the idea that "I'm in charge, and you aren't".

Either way, he's a great "mine canary" to tell you when the Dems are about to do something reckless, stupid, autocratic, and/or any two or more of the above.

Sort of like another famous "talker":

"So, what'll we do tomorrow night, Brain?"

"The same thing we do every night, Pinky.
"Try to take over the world!"

It seems to me that all of the Obama worshipers are victims of arrested development. They need the almost supernatural hero & it really doesn't matter that in the case he has no real accomplishments or workable ideas.

Yes, though I also have to say he's rather cunningly also adapted the whole rhetoric of needing to feel good about oneself that the younger generation is rife with: "Yes We Can," "You Did It!" etc. No losers. We're all winners.

I think everyone should read this piece of sh*t's piece on his blog about his WeatherFucker days ........ you will vomit ....... he really really likes himself ...... remind you of anyone?

Weather Underground Redux
April 20, 2006
The Weather Underground, born Phoenix-like from the ashes of a terrible explosion that killed three of our leaders in Greenwich Village, New York on March 6, 1970, stormed fleetingly across the landscape at the tail end of that mythical and iconic age now simply called the Sixties. Originally a militant formation inside Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the catalytic radical student group of its day, the Weather Underground rose, hot and angry, to—in our own terms—smite the war-mongers and strike against the race-haters. We went over the top. By the mid-1970’s the American war in Viet Nam had ended and the organization had effectively flamed out. Individuals made their twisty ways, singly and in small groups, upward and onward as best they could.
A palimsest—a ghostly smudge—remained, however, as a reminder that the phenomenon had once come to life, that it had indeed existed—vital, wild and animated—that there was something more to find and to see beneath the authorized story. The lessons and the legacy of that fugitive, ephemeral moment are, of course, contested—the ever-changing present, as always, unsettles and makes novel demands upon the past. We discover unforseen lenses with which to examine the ashes, we create fresh perspectives with which to rethink the details and make meaning of the larger contexts, the historical flow, the cultural and social surround. Revisiting the Weather Underground requires another look at what was said, and what we did.

Naturally, Barack Obama was an active part of ACORN at the time, helping it legally in court and helping it organize voters. By 1996, ACORN and the New Party were essentially the same body. Along with the Democratic Socialists of America, the New Party endorsed Barack Obama in his State Senate bid.

I asked my Republican mom why her first ever Dem vote was going to Obama. One of the reasons she gave was, "He's an intellectual." I asked what made her think that and she pointed out that he went to Harvard. I retorted that Bush, Kerry and countless other presidential candidates all went to Ivy League schools. Obama wrote two books, not about economics or sociology or history but about himself. I asked her to give an example of something Obama said or one of his proposals that was "intellectual". She gave no answer.
I think she's confusing intellectuals with utopian visionaries.

From Hanson's article

There is a report today (I think first offered in the Huffington Post) that David Brooks, the gifted New York Times columnist, has described Sarah Palin as a "fatal cancer" and part of a larger pernicious conservative trend:

But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

It is a rock or stone which has no ideas.

What David Brooks will not admit to himself, is that his own ideas might not be correct, and Sarah Palin's ideas might be.

To that effect, here is the start of a list of wise people:

Abraham Lincoln

John XXIII

Don Bosco

James Watt

Frederick Douglass

VDH is at his most brilliant in this essay. Every paragraph is a insightful,

...everything from the faux-seal with its vero possumus pretensions, the Greek temple backdrops, the efforts to speak at the Brandenburg Gate, the mantra "we are the change we've been waiting for," the messianic idea that the seas and planet will likewise heel to His wisdom, and the inane 'hope and change' banalities do not suggest real wisdom at all, but a dazzling veneer that overlays a great deal of megalomania.

And this cuts to the core of the Obama problem:

...recall of Niehbuhr apparently offers Obama little ethical protection from the close association with the virulently racist Wright or warns him not to talk after 2001 with the now boastful and proud ex-terrorist Ayers, and no judgement about the moral course in the earlier conduct...

Knowledge without morality is not wisdom, but it is dangerous.

I bet Biden has no idea who Niebuhr was - it was just something his handlers pulled off of Wiki to make him sound intellectual. What most people in this nation don't understand is that our nation's elite schools are not so elite anymore. The Latin Classical education went out decades ago, and the what use to pass as "The Classical Humanist" education went out the window circa 1969. Outside of the hard sciences, there is no rigour. Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Cornell, Univ of Chicago, and Princeton offer nothing more than an expensive social network in which graduates can capture fat Wall St jobs, get into prestigious law schools, or get offers from powerful Beltway interests.

In Obama's case, he could be called a slacker. What did he do with his Haravard Law degree? He became a shakedown artist and racial hustler. Like Bill Clinton before him, he used the best legal education money could buy to persue power. For both men thier "education" meant nothing to them.

Gibson sits down with McCain tonight. Here's a transcript.

One of the best bits from McCain:
MCCAIN: No, actually I don't [think he's been vetted]. In fact, Sen. Clinton in their debates said that the American people didn't know enough about him, including his relationship with Mr. [William] Ayers. That's what she said. And I agree with that. He said he was a guy in the neighborhood. We know that's not true. He said — he wrote down a piece of paper that he would take public financing for his presidential campaign if I would. He betrayed the trust of the American people there.

He looked in the camera twice during the debate with Sen. Clinton and said, "I will sit down and negotiate with John McCain before I decide to forgo public financing for my campaign." He never called me. He looked in the camera and told the American people something that was patently false. He told the American people about his relationship with Mr. Ayers, that he was a guy in the neighborhood.

He wasn't a guy in the neighborhood. He launched his political career in his living room, in Mr. Ayers' living room. And I don't care about two washed-up old terrorists that are unrepentant about trying to destroy America. But I do care, and Americans should care, about his relationship with him and whether he's being truthful and candid about it.

I have sometimes wondered if Stanley Ann Dunham, BO's communist activist mama, ever crossed paths with William Ayers or the SDS / Weather Underground in her youth during the 60's . I wonder if those connections did not perhaps embrace Obama in his later life.

This is just me, a-wonderin.

I think she would have been in Indonesia during the heyday of the Weather Underground? She moved there in 1967.

Chicago has seriously cut back on the Core and no longer requires Western Civ. asked my Republican mom why her first ever Dem vote was going to Obama. I think one route to change is simplification. Completely simplify the tax code. Make House procedures as efficient as possible, and computerize everything. Make the procedures of governance simple, and you don't need "lifers" like Kennedy et al to corner the market on the phrase, "he knows how things are really done from the inside." Simplify, and make it transparent. Destroy the legislative clerisy.

262 3 wood  Thu, Oct 9, 2008 4:38:18pm

Good evening.

I was out all day and so missed the fun with the market melt down today.

For what little my opinion on all this sis worth, here it is.

The credit markets are still frozen and it will take weeks if not months to un-stick them.

In the mean time, the market will not buy stock unless they are an incredible bargain. I think the DOW has to get to about 850 for that to happen.

Traditionally the market wants to see revenue per share of at least 15 times earnings. The so called analysts have been operating with an expectation of about $75 in revenue generated per share. People i know on the trading foloor say that $60 per share is more realistic with a recession coming on.

So, if you take the 75 per share times 15 you get and S&P of 1,1245 whisch we were a few days ago. But, like I say,t ha market has discounted expected revenue to $60 a share, which multiplied by 15 gives you an S&P floor of 900.

The word I'm getting is the big money wants to see a ration of 14 times or 13 times before they feel stock is cheap enough to take the risk. $60 times 14 give an S&P ration of 840 and times 13 gives and S&P ratio of 780.

At the close tonight, the S&P was at 909. I think we got another 50 to 100 points to lose off the S&P 500 before we hit the bottom. SO another 5% loss day or so is coming.

On the bright side, once the credit actually start to loosen and the investing public gets some confidence back in the system, I think you will see a bunch of big gaining days.

Bear in mind tough, the economy as a whole will probably not start growing again until 2nd half of next year.

Tell her that Obama's Columbia grades were mediocre, and he got into Harvard Law only through the intervention of Khalid al-Mansour, and that as editor of the Harvard Law Review he himself wrote nothing, and that his biography "Dreams of my Father" was probably ghost-written by Bill Ayers.

"Intellectual," my ass.

There is nothing conservative about letting loose the free market creativity of this country to push the boundaries of commerce and innovation. There is nothing conservative about making a society supportive of stable families that grow in size and number. There is nothing conservative about ensuring the safety of the US so it can grow and prosper.

That video of the Obamakids singing is probably going to give me nightmares tonight. That's the sort of thing you expect from some weirdo fringe cult of personality, not from supporters of a mainstream party candidate. It was so eerily similar to the video of the Hitler Youth singing. Of course, being multicultural, multiethnic, politically correct, pro-environment, global citizens, compassionate to a fault and beyond, and tolerant of just about everything but patriotic conservative capitalists, the Obamabots would probably say they are nothing like the Nazis. But, just like the Nazis, they are absolutely convinced of their purity and righteousness, and they are already showing their intolerance for dissent. Their identity is so bound up with Obama's that they can bear no criticism of him because it directly impacts their self-esteem.

“Some may say their true colors are showing,” said Representative Yvette Clarke of New York. “Others may say they’re just not being thoughtful. But certainly a lot of the language I’ve heard I consider to be incendiary. I believe it is meant to generate a certain sentiment within their base that engenders fear and certainly appeals to a group of people within our society who would pursue this along racial lines.

Ms. Clarke also found a racial subtext in Ms. Palin’s repeated appeals to “Joe Six-Pack” and “hockey moms.”

Essentially, Niebuhr held that since all power corrupts, the best way to use it was to do whatever the h**l you wanted to, whenever you wanted to, and to whomever you wanted to. On the grounds that you were being "honest" when you did so.

If Obama thinks Niebuhr is a great role model, he's in good company.

Lenin, Trotsky, Mao, and Adolf all liked him too.

cheers

eon

You haven't a clue of what you are talking about.

This is not anything like what Niebuhr wrote. He promoted a suspicious view of human nature, offered a defense of democracy arguing that because man could conceive of justice, democracy was possible and because he tended to act in unjust ways, democracy was necessary.

He also argued that pacifism was not a responsible attitude to take in the face of Nazism. He said the U.S. and the West, for all their faults, needed to defeat Nazism.

He was a pro-Zionist who argued that the Jewish people had a right to a homeland.

Nieburh was an intellectual giant who understood the nature of evil and the limits of power. Your characterization of his writings wrong.

What is wisdom?

In this lizard's case it is to avoid having so much faith in the system/markets that your entire net worth is wiped out in about two weeks.

Too bad I only got the wisdom after the fact.

I feel your pain, man! It got hosed back in 2001 when the dotcom bubble burst. Clueless me...

My Niebuhr's a pretty good guy, he most always returns the stuff he borrows from me.

More than ever, I am convinced this election represents an attempt at a political coup d'etat by the left to take over the United States.

Your comment is worth repeating.

I really think that there a lot of fishy things going on. The Acorn voter drive and George Soros's probable sinking of Lehman Brothers being two examples.

I'm generally suspicious of conspiracy theorists, but since I studied with some students of Alinsky in my previous life as a "community organizer," I know that it is possible to accomplish amazing things with a well-thought-out plan.

Remember Archimedes' view: "Give me a long-enough lever, and I can move the world.

Yes, it IS possible to destroy the United States. Let's not be naive about this. It IS possible.

Go to Myspace.com and do a people search for honest democrat.

"Sorry, we weren’t able to find a "honest democrat" on MySpace.com."

..anyone see the article about some asshole calling GovPalin a racist, because she used white code words wlike HOckey MOn and Joe Sixpack?

someof these critics are mentally ill

They are trying to "disappear" white people. We're the kulaks of the Great Revolution. We must be destroyed.

Everyone is asking what was Obama's relationship to Bill Ayers, I wonder why Bill Ayers liked Obama so much that he kick started his political career. Seems Bill Ayers saw something in Obama that was very much like himself but a younger version who could be pushed in politics to get things done Bills Ayers could no longer accompolish.

So many of the people that Obama has attached himself to hate America. You are known by the friends you keep so I don't think Obama has a very high opinion of America. As for his intellectual abilities he seems to be a total fraud.

Hhhmmm, DOT-COM-BUBBLE......was that a test run?

Any way to back thread that little comma in the history of the street?
Bet ya find deleted this and NO ISP that, if so , they covered their tracks well. Which begs the question, "Is this an organized take-down of the American Financial Markets? Who wants this? Right on the door-step of a major election cycle. Who REALLY wants this?

Sleep well lizards......

Now the Nikkei in Tokyo is dropping like a rock in reaction to the US markets tanking.

The Nikkei is down 4.5% at the open.

Closed down 9.62%

Yikes.
