Tech Note: Javascript Reboot

Science | Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 4:41:50 pm PDT

It’s time to reload the page, as we’ve made structural changes to the HTML and Javascript code to make comments pages significantly smaller and less complex, which should help keep the hamsters from going totally insane.

I'll selfishly repost my last comment in the previous thread just to remind everyone of how important this election is.

Obama
O=15, B=2, A=1, M=13, A=1
15+2+1-13+1=6
Obama's half hour ad air date 10-29-2008
1+2+9+2-8=6
Number of days that date is before the election: 6

Vote wisely.

You subtracted the 8 in the second equation, instead of adding as you did with all the other numbers.

Naughty, naughty, naughty.

If you want the down and dirty details, I've revised the top line of each comment (that contains the username, icon, the ratings buttons, etc.) to get rid of more than half the HTML code that creates that section. You won't see anything different, but it means fewer bytes need to be transferred over the Internet to display the comments, which is always good.

Now if I could only find a way to get rid of the table in that top line and replace it with floated DIVs, in a way that duplicates the vertically centered look. It's surprisingly difficult to achieve that without a table.

It is Yom Kippur -- the Day of Judgement or Day of Atonement.

10 days after Rosh Hashanah (the new years), Jews will fast and spend the day in prayer, repenting for all the sins of the previous year. One is supposed to ask forgiveness for all the wrongs they may have done, knowingly or otherwise.

It is also on this day that G-d decides whether to seal your name in the "Good" book or "Bad" book.

You'll have to ask Yochanan (or other lizards) for more details on the two books.

Yom Kippur is the most sacred day of the entire Jewish calendar.

Or......you can put them on the treadmill backwards and hang a photo of Ronald Reagan. In their attempt to run away, they will power you up better than the hamsters. I have noticed with Firefox 2.0 and Win98 that the more comments added the longer the page takes to load (1,000+ can take about 3 minutes at times) and I get a script time-out notification starting about 400 or so comments. Will this new coding decrease any of these happenings?

I do know less bytes transferred means less of a 'net bill for you, so even if no change at this end is good since it makes it cheaper for you, Charles.

Win98 is pretty darned out of date -- that's why you're getting those timeout errors. It just chokes on the larger pages. If you really don't want to (or can't) upgrade your OS, it might help to add more RAM.

BETWEEN Yom Kippur, shabat, and sukahot there are only a couple of days so they get the week off. he tells me when they get back there is some kind of unit thing getting his baret or something.

Give him our best!

re: #39 Joo-LiZ

It is Yom Kippur -- the Day of Judgement or Day of Atonement.

10 days after Rosh Hashanah (the new years), Jews will fast and spend the day in prayer, repenting for all the sins of the previous year. One is supposed to ask forgiveness for all the wrongs they may have done, knowingly or otherwise.

It is also on this day that G-d decides whether to seal your name in the "Good" book or "Bad" book.

You'll have to ask Yochanan (or other lizards) for more details on the two books.

Yom Kippur is the most sacred day of the entire Jewish calendar.

you on a break? or did the shofar already blow where you are?
I was bad bad bad and worked today cause they fired 5 people for drug use and wanted me, and because they are unhinged right now. Little too much politics and anti global warming organic low carbon foot print crap at Rosh Hashanah.... buh.

Yaar, mate go buy a real computer with a real operating system. Windows 98 is garbage. They are down to 400 bucks nowadays

For me this computer is more than adequate, and works just fine for me. I do not need the headaches and hassles of upgrading not just the box when I have my computers tweaked out to do what I want just fine. For what I do with the machines any upgrade is nigh on useless and could prove to be detrimental.

Besides, $400 is $399.95 more than I can afford, being an unemployed disabled Navy Vet.

Bill O'Reilly doesn't want to talk about Ayers, Wright or any other Obama negative issues - he only wants to talk about his interview with The One. He wants to be the center of attention and if people bring up Obama's shady past, that takes the focus of attention of of HIMSELF.

Yaaar, One of the problems is the big money being paid to the Taliban by the illegal opium growers for "protection". Someone pointed out there is a big need for pain-killers in developing nations. If Opium production was legalized in Afghanistan and the production sold to the pharmaceutical manufacturers and resold cheaply to the developing countries, it might solve a lot of problems in Afghanistan....

Off-topic, but I very much feel like shouting this from the mountaintops (even I brought this up more than once before) now that someone finally dislodged the rock that the excerable William Ayers was hiding under and is now finally seeing the light of day.

The man who laments that he didn't do enough bombing in a New York Times article dated September 11th, 2001 took it upon himself to raise Chesa Boudin when the law caught up with his parents (Weather Underground fugitives) for their role in a 1981 Nyack, N.Y. armoured truck robbery that killed Officers Waverly Brown, Edward O'Grady and Brinks guard Peter Paige.

When the issue was revisited by the New York Times in 2002, did they write a sympathetic puff-piece regarding the difficulties Peter Paiges three children had growing up without a father? Or Ed O'Grady's three kids? Or how Waverly Brown's son, Greg, is now a Nyack policeman himself?

Hardly. Instead they wrote a piece fawning over the brave Chesa Boudin and the hardships he faced growing up away from his biological parents in Ayer's and Dohrn's Hyde Park townhome.

Bill O'Reilly stuck his toe in the water of controversy when he went after Bwarney Frank ( good job there ) and then got scared when he did not get the thunderous applause he expected. Now he has retreated because the democrats might just control Washington after the election, and who will then go on his program? Playing it safe through November. For the folks, of course.

O'Reilly is an economic dunce... he has no credibility on any financial matter.

He also has a huge blind spot when it comes to things like ACORN and Ayers. He seems to think the rhetoric that comes from those kind of far left groups is just hype -- they really don't mean it, they just say it to be provocative.

He did the same thing with La Raza. When Michelle Malkin told him about the Hispanic supremacy and out-right "hate whitey, hate blacks" racism they espouse, he shrugged and said "No big deal, its unimportant".

Not really: my contributions, my employer's contributions, and my profits have been wiped out to the point where my balance is $48.97 higher today than this time last year. Between all the taxes and unfunded mandates I pay close to 33% taxes, and now those sumbags have figured out a way to wipe out thousands of dollars of what wealth I did manage to accrue.

Thank you, Republicans who spent like drunken sailors and dems who gave home loans to any deadbeat with a pulse. I look forward to voting all of you deadbeats out of office in less than 4 weeks. And that psycho Pelosi wants to send out MORE checks!

OT
For those of you who don't get McCain's philosophy, here's the latest e-mail I got from his campaign:

During Tuesday's town hall debate in Nashville, I told a retired Navy chief in the audience that everything I ever learned about leadership I learned from a chief petty officer in the Navy. My career in the United States Navy has had a lasting impact on my life and the lessons I learned continue to guide me today.

The naval term "steady strain" has become a constant mantra throughout my life. It references the need to keep lines between ships steady to avoid a sudden jerk or movement that could easily snap the line. We're facing great challenges as a nation and we must keep a "steady strain," because it is not only essential at sea, but in life and in politics.

I strongly believe a "steady strain," made possible by the grassroots organization we've built across the country, is the path to our victory on November 4th.

To me, it makes more sense than veering off and hotly pursuing the latest "opportunity".
The latest tactics of going after Obama's associations, according to the above explanation, will continue and keep pressure on, but not hit a breaking (snapping) point.

The problem is when you make piles of money and get used to it, unless you are a truly courageous person and a man of firm conviction, you'll start acting not out of principle, but out of a desire to preserve the lifestyle and attention you're used to.

Like I said: So much for "We pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."

During the Revolutionary War I believe there was an American officer or politician who had two sons imprisoned in Britain's horrific P.O.W. "camp," a half sunken ship in a harbor. He was offered their release if he would leave the revolutionary cause. He refused.

We cannot depend on the conservative "elites" anymore. They have no courage and no principles. FUCK THEM ALL.

Besides, the Win98se machine cost me a whole $1.00 at a church sale! :D :D :D :D

Win98 is pretty darned out of date -- that's why you're getting those timeout errors. It just chokes on the larger pages. If you really don't want to (or can't) upgrade your OS, it might help to add more RAM.

I'm running Windoze XP and I get those script timeouts also on the big threads. A timeout for approx. each 500 comments. I use Netscape Navigator 9, which is much the same as FireFox. Both are Mozilla software. Of course Netscape is no longer supported but it still works for me.

James Lileks is a national treasure, and should have a museum dedicated to him where he can be kept in luxury. Have you been reading his latest "Safe in the Arms of the Mouse" bleats?

Huh.

Just compared my 401k from end of third quarter 2007 to now (yes, I'm a masochist).

I've made $49 in the past year.

If McCain manages to pull this off, he damn well better cut spending. Seriously.

If Obama wins, well, I have been saving seeds from my garden, I know how to fish, and I can learn to hunt.

Obama is selling pie-in-the-sky to his deluded cultists. Can't happen given all the economic circumstances. In fact, he is going to have to raise taxes on the middle class to do a minimum of his promised programs. And perhaps even if he scraps them all. Barry is going to be a deer in the headlights if he gets elected on the economy. The Congress, Wall Street, and the Banks are going to roll him, and show us all smooth talkers with limited experience don't make good Presidents.

Big winner here? The Clintons. Even if Barry wins she can run against him in the primaries for 2012 for his failure to meet his promises. Going to be the big "O" train wreck.

He's almost passable if a discussion stays right on target (his target), but as soon as someone throws him a curve, it goes to shouting and repeating the same thing over and over.

He can't think on his feet, which shows me his lack of having a real understanding of an issue.

It's more like he's working off the cliff notes of a subject.

I agree. He's tolerable on Hannity & Colmes, but I can't listen to his radio show or watch that solo show he has on weekends on FNC.

With apologies to those that have already read this on Drudge: CBS REPORTER SHOCK: OBAMA AIRPLANE SMELLS BAD; CAMPAIGN TREATS PRESS POORLY...

I have to presume that this guy who otherwise seems to be singing from the Church of Obama Hymnal is going to now be labeled as a racist as well? Or will this be excused like Joe "Plugs" all-too-frequent gaffes?

re: #316 ArmyWife

When I went, Glen Burnie was not Old Mill - 2 separate schools. Glen Burnie's mascot? The Gophers. Yes, the Glen Burnie Gophers. Tremble in fear! We beat them every year (I am pretty sure) - I graduated in 1989.

Old Mill opened when I was in 6th grade. My brother, 5 years my senior, graduated from Glen Burnie. Old Mill is the Patriots and our colors are red, white, and blue (bicentennial and all that). I graduated in '82, so our paths wouldn't have crossed.

re: #300 FrogMarch

anyone else hear about how Obama is lying about his political coming out party with Ayres?
He's blaming it one someone name (Penny?) and this woman is coming forward saying - "no way - Obama is lying".

Penny? Would that be Penny Pritzger, of the bank looting Pritzgers?

How about we give Obama a bag of acorns and open up a crate full of squirrels at his feet?

Hmmmm.... I've just had an interesting thought...

Maybe we could all, en masse, mail him a packs of rotten acorns as sort of a protest-vote. :D

Here is some possible spit for him to drown in, on Drudge::

WASH TIMES Friday: Obama secretly tried to sway Iraqi government to ignore Bush deal on keeping troops in Iraq... Developing...

There is already so much. How he is still seemingly ahead? Not one, single clue, I swear.

I gave up a long time ago on McCain. I dont trust him to do what is necessary.
But i DO trust the American people, and will rest easy knowing that they will never pick a wimp like the Zero

Not yet.

I'm getting warmer. I'm trying to remember where I heard it.

Penny Pritzker is Obama's campaign finance chairman. She is also involved in some slimy bank dealings with Superior Bank, which failed

Is Obama for the People or the Banks?

Lobo 91 -

Wilkow is THE MAN - the real article. Had a Sunday show on WABC - AM, good ratings. He left on his own two (2) feet to go to satellite radio, considering it to be a better opportunity. He might have been wrong - AND - he had enough guts to try it while he was on TOP.

Oops! Spelling error on my part. Its probably Penny Pritzker, Chicago socialite and sub-prime mortgage bank looter extraordinaire.

re: #192 unrealizedviewpoint

I wonder if Bill has even considered the O effect, ir: The markets anticipation and fear that Obama's taxation plans, specifically capital gains and corporate tax increase plans and how they have helped to propel this market further downward?

The growing belief that BHO will be elected is IMO responsible for both the timing and the extent of the meltdown. I hope MSM is happy to be contributing to the impoverishment of the middle class, Dem and Rep alike.
