Mysterious Mammalian DNA Survives for Eons

Science | Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 6:05:39 pm PDT

A fascinating discovery by scientists investigating the mammalian genome: Mysterious DNA Found to Survive Eons of Evolution.

Scientists have discovered mystery snippets of mammal DNA that have survived eons of evolution and yet have no apparent purpose. The finding reveals just how much we don’t know about the secrets hidden in our genome and that of other animals.

Most genes change throughout evolution via mutations; useless ones eventually get weeded out of the population while the helpful modifications take hold. However, about 500 regions of our DNA - the body’s instruction code made up of base pairs of molecules - have apparently remained intact throughout the history of mammalian evolution, or the past 80 million to 100 million years, basically free of mutations.

“Mutations are introduced into these regions just as they are everywhere else, but they’re swept out of the genome much more quickly,” said researcher Gill Bejerano, professor of developmental biology and computer science at Stanford University. “These regions seem to be under intense purifying selection - no mutations take hold permanently.”

And what’s more, many of those sequences do not appear to code for any obvious function, or phenotype, in the body. Researchers suspect they do serve an important purpose, but have yet to figure out exactly what that purpose is. (These sequences are not the same as non-coding or “junk” DNA, for which no function has been identified. Also, most junk DNA has not been conserved for eons like these segments.)

Ultraconserved regions

The researchers call these mystery snippets “ultraconserved regions,” and found that they are about 300 times less likely than other regions of the genome to be lost during the course of mammalian evolution. Bejerano and his graduate student Cory McLean detailed the finding in the Oct. 2 issue of the journal Genome Research.

The fact that these segments haven’t been weeded out by natural selection implies that they serve an important function in mammals. Yet mice in the lab bred to lack these DNA strands appear healthy and don’t seem to be missing any vital genes.

Wondering if the odd results were simply some fault of the lab experiment, and perhaps the mice really weren’t as well off as they seemed, the researchers investigated whether any other mammals were also blithely living without these regions.

Amazingly, they found that was not the case.

In addition to particular sequences of DNA that puzzle scientists, there are many basic questions about the workings of DNA for which answers have so far eluded researchers.

We should really get ID pushed into schools- that will totally help solve this mystery.

many of those sequences do not appear to code for any obvious function, or phenotype, in the body. Researchers suspect they do serve an important purpose, but have yet to figure out exactly what that purpose is.

That's the key. Just because we don't know now what this DNA does, doesn't mean it has no function at all. We may find out next year, or five centuries from now, or never. But God er Gregor Mendel er Mother Nature didn't put that DNA in there for nothin'!

I can clearly remember stuff that happened back to about age 2 or 3. One of my first memories involves getting bitten (by a rabbit!) on the finger. Funk upon a time
In the days of the Funkapus
The concept of specially-designed Afronauts
Capable of funkatizing galaxies
Was first laid on man-child
But was later repossessed
And placed among the secrets of the pyramids
Until a more positive attitude
Towards this most sacred phenomenon,
Clone Funk,
Could be acquired

(we want the funk, give up the funk)
There in these terrestrial projects
It would wait, along with its coinhabitants of kings and pharoahs
Like sleeping beauties with a kiss
That would release them to multiply
In the image of the chosen one:
Dr Funkenstein.
And funk is its own reward.
May I frighten you?

I think the most apt computer analogue for this DNA is to the firmware in the chips that help computer start up. No matter how much you corrupt your hard drive, the firmware is still there, which at least allows you to turn on the computer, get the screen illuminated, and be smart enough to start searching for the operating system. Nearly impossible to corrupt. Of course, it doesn't do you much good without an OS in place, but without the incorruptible firmware, doing its invisible job, your computer would be a worthless hunk of junk.

Some guy on that show was experimenting with turning on those old genes on in hens eggs and lizard eggs, to see what happened, and speculated it might be possible to bring back the dinosaurs by extracting those dormant sections of DNA out of the creatures they evolved into. Essentially reverse-engineering the dinos from their descendants. Really interesting.

I love to look at the names of my "great-greats" who all lived at the same time in the late 1600s, never dreaming that they would one day have a common descendant (well, two, counting my brother) with a couple dozen others spread out across northern Europe.

Haaar! Rehabilitated? Keep it up Obama, this explanation will get you no where with the average American, who is not as dumb as the liberal and media elite believe. I predict Obama's campaign implodes over the next few weeks. He shouldn't even be the nominee, but the slimy bilge-rat media has been in love with the bastard for the last two years, and are running interference for him. Looking back in briefly.
Dohrn was a local celebrity in Hyde Park, part of the University's recent romantic episode, Alinsky was a known part of the left history, everybody knew about them within a week of showing up. The city during the 70s and 80s was a place where everybody had been on one side or the other in '68 or spent their time talking to people who had been. Either Obama knew of the players before he showed up, from Uncle Frank or by encountering Ayers in NY, or he learned of them in short order in Chicago before heading to Law school.

re: #92 tradewind

they did - from an email sent to me:
Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.
The two most important events in all of history were:
1. The invention of beer, and
2. The invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer, and the beer to the man.
These facts formed the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:
1. Liberals
2. Conservatives.
Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to barbeque at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.
Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQ's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.
Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became known as girlie-men.
Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy and group hugs, the evolution of the Hollywood actor, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide all the meat and beer that conservatives provided.
Over the years, Conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass.
Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare. Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of liberal women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.
Conservatives drink domestic beer. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, athletes, Marines, and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.
Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America . They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history.......

I honestly felt that Obama's glaring inexperience, bone-deep corruption, piss-poor judgement, narcissism, and his creepy messiahnic following, made the choice for me. We know Hillary. We know her game, we know her friends, we know her strengths and weaknesses, and we know what she wants and how she tries to get it. Not to mention the fact that she's seen the job up close and personal for longer than Obama has even been in politics, and she understands what's at stake, at least better than 0bie ever will.

I can't campaign for Republicans here by TX law. I don't know anybody who's on the fence, really. Not much I can do except kvetch here on the blog, and pray.

I cannot verify this but a friend sent this to me about Mr. Obama:

To all,

I have read all of the emails from not only some of the MTOA board members, but
from other Law Enforcement & Military personnel about Barack Obama's rudeness
and what seems to be disgust for basically anyone in uniform. Well, it's my
turn to add to the list of emailers and here it is:

So members of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department, MSP, and other local
agencies inside Calhoun County are working with Secret Service in the security
of Mr. Obama. Mr. Obama's bus arrives in Battle Creek and pulls into the
stadium area. Before Mr. Obama exits the bus, he has the Secret Service get off
and tell all Law Enforcement personnel in uniform that they now have to stand
behind the bus so Mr. Obama is not seen with anyone in a Law Enforcement uniform
before he gets off or while in the public view. So, everyone from MSP,
Sheriff's Dept., and other agencies looks at each other for a brief second, goes
and stands behind the bus out of sight so Mr. Obama does not have to see, or
been seen with, what to him is 'undesirables' since he refuses to been seen or even
acknowledge Military or Law Enforcement.

At a time of war and terrorism in our world, this presidental candidate who is
being protected by various branches of the military & law enforcement at the tax
payers expense, refuses to acknowledge, be seen with, have in his photographed
background, any type of Military or Law Enforcement in uniform.

But this is not in the media or headlines in the news. Why? I wonder what the
story or media frenzy would be if it was muslims, blacks, whites, jews, or any
other race, gender, religon, and/or occupation, that Mr. Obama refuses to be
seen with or have around him.

Why would Law Enforcement branches make this up? Law Enforcement traditionally
has had more funding under Democrats.

Just food for thought leading up to November 4th.

According to Wikipedia

Although a proposal was made in 1957 to define an aeon to be a unit of time equal to one billion years (1 Ga), the idea was not approved as a unit of scientific measure and is seldom used for a specific period of time.[citation needed] Its more common usage is for any long, indefinite, period of time

That's the definition spelled "Aeon".

these genetic sequences that haven't changed in millions of yrs. of mammalian evolution, must be some kind of basic bldg. blocks of mammals.
because otherwise, wouldn't mutations take hold there as they do in other parts of the DNA? that don't really matter over all
it is interesting that 'junk DNA', which no one really understands either, is NOT preserved for eons, unlike the DNA in the 'ultra conserved regions'.
looks like the junk DNA is baggage that can be lost and maybe the 'conserved DNA' is why we're the highest class of vertebrates.
it is incredible to think that at some point science may reduce physical life to a laboratory formula.

Speaking of brilliant males (were we?) tonight on O'Rielly, Dr. Marc Lamont was once again on and asked if the term "that one" was racist on the part of McCain's reference to Obama in the debate. It wasn't racist, but it was offensive according to Lamont. He pointed out that Palin's use of the term hockey mom and Joe six pack were racial in that he knew of no black hockey moms so it was racism by omission, I guess.

He also alluded to the fact that flesh colored band-aids were racist because they weren't black flesh, just flesh flesh. After all the banter, we finally arrived at the fact that Dr. Lamont does see racial slurs in a lot of words.

Bill didn't help matters in his closing when in summation, he was saying by to Dr. Lamont and the term "boy" came out. Wonder if that will go unnoticed? What do you all think?

re: #181 Dianna

One thousand years.

Sadly the places i've looked disagree. They mostly give an indefinite length. One def. said "two or more eras" or "an indefinitely long time. an age" but an era is defined as:

A period of time as reckoned from a specific date serving as the basis of its chronological system.

A period of time characterized by particular circumstances, events, or personages: the Colonial era of U.S. history; the Reagan era.
A point that marks the beginning of such a period of time. See synonyms at period.
The longest division of geologic time, made up of one or more periods.

Its kind of a circular definition. "It is what it is"?

We should never stop drilling for oil. It is an inherently valuable commodity. Geothermal energy is a remarkably clean way to produce electricity. By channeling natural underground heat thermals into cooling chambers they produce steam which powers turbines producing electricity. Large size geothermal plants are in operation today. A critical, input is the massive quantity of required cooling water. Therefore, successful geothermal plants are generally located on the coast which tends to be prime real estate.

I believe that water is our future energy. We just can't figure it out yet.

"aeon" is the term chosen by Greek scholars and early Christians for translating Jesus' references to 'world' when He prophecied the coming of One, like unto the Son of Man

Linguistically, to force 'aeon' or 'eon' into a numerical constant would destroy the meaning of the term, at least as used by Jesus and those rational speakers of the preceding 2,000 years.

There's no way you can refer to Obama in a diminutive without being called racist. You call him "fella", "man", guy, dude, whatever, anything you say can and will be turned against you. Somebody will dig around and find a professor who will come forward and say that the word has racist connotations.

I find it amusing that he reinforced the stereotype that people of color don't like the cold. "Black people don't play hockey!" Next he'll be telling us they don't like swimming, either.

re: #226 Karridine

"aeon" is the term chosen by Greek scholars and early Christians for translating Jesus' references to 'world' when He prophecied the coming of One, like unto the Son of Man

Linguistically, to force 'aeon' or 'eon' into a numerical constant would destroy the meaning of the term, at least as used by Jesus and those rational speakers of the preceding 2,000 years.

The Wikipedia entry for eon is

The period of one million years

At the top of that page is

Eon is the US English variant of the traditional Aeon.

The first paragraph of the Aeon link is

The word aeon, also spelled eon or æon, means "age", "forever" or "for eternity". It is a Latin transliteration from the koine Greek word ὁ αἰών (aion), from the archaic αἰϝών (aiwon). In Homer it typically refers to life or lifespan, but by at least Hesiod it could refer to ages or generations. It has a similar meaning to the Sanskrit word kalpa and Hebrew word olam. A cognate Latin word aevum or aeuum (cf. αἰϝών) for "age" is present in words such as longevity and mediæval.[1]

I only did that because a 'serious' answer was requested.
Your definition works, and for those who want "some sort of numerical reference", the billion year thing sounds fairly reasonable.

I haven't read this article, but the lack of an obvious gross phenotype in mice with these bits of DNA knocked out is not entirely surprising. There are many instances in which knocking out a certain gene has no effect on an unchallenged mouse. Much to the chagrin of graduate students that want to get their PhD quickly, sometimes a gene's importance only becomes apparent in cases of induced disease or injury. After that, the molecular and physiological mechanisms involved in producing the phenotype can be extremely difficult to tease out.

By the way, is it any surprise that ACORN, by filing a lawsuit alleging grievances follows in the shoes of organizations like CAIR - a philosophy of: "blame them - don't look at what we are doing...we are being persecuted."

That bit of strategy is ripped from the pages of Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals". Force the establishment to live up to the letter of their law while completely disregarding the same.

And this story in my view is the biggest bombshell out there. Yes, the MSM will ignore it but it shows BHO is corrupt at his core.

For what it is worth, I know Sean Hannity is not perfect. But, where do you think we would be without him. He is the best advocate for the Republican Party and Conservative Movement. And he is relentless. In a world of media corruption, he is frequently the lone wolf. Others like Rush might be considered the heavyweights but Hannity is out there digging up facts and screaming them from the rooftops. I am not sure Bush would have been elected twice without him. Sounds like a stretch but he is up against a mammoth MSM machine.

Agreed.

First, privatize the entire educational system. Give every school to an elected board of just that school. Let every school determine its own curriculum and draw up semester-long contracts with teachers and students.

Second, give families vouchers to redeem at any school, religious or non-religious, specialized or generic.

Third, test every kid.

Lefty claims Palin is an idiot.....
Palin treads carefully between fundamentalist beliefs and public policy

After conducting a college band and watching Palin deliver a commencement address to a small group of home-schooled students in June 1997, Wasilla resident Philip Munger said, he asked the young mayor about her religious beliefs.

Palin told him that "dinosaurs and humans walked the Earth at the same time," Munger said. When he asked her about prehistoric fossils and tracks dating back millions of years, Palin said "she had seen pictures of human footprints inside the tracks," recalled Munger, who teaches music at the University of Alaska in Anchorage and has regularly criticized Palin in recent years on his liberal political blog, called Progressive Alaska.

I'm in TN (a solid red state.) But why 3 Obama ads and no McCain?

Does the O have so much money to burn? That's ok, let him burn all that cash he got from Hollywood moonbats.

I remarked early on that I found Obama's hypnotic charisma to be a dangerously seductive thing. Now, its attractiveness is compounded by our present economic turmoil. Remember that the Reich was swept in power in Germany during a time of economic collapse, as the population was swayed by irrational romanticism.

Obama reminds me of the demon Jasmine in that old vampire TV series Angel. All public sweetness and light, inspiring mindless adoration and obesiance, while she cannibalizes people in the privacy of her room.

Personally, I hope when McCain gets elected, there are mass firings all across the various alphabet-groups of the government. W Bush shoulda done that, but didn't, and it sure caused him a lot of grief later... :-|

George Bush actually reached across the aisle when he first took office. The other side of the aisle, to a man (or woman) told him to f*** off. He should have gotten the picture then, but didn't.

I've got it! All that "junk DNA" is there waiting for all of us to be on the same spiritual plane so we can join hands and sing in harmony--as one people. Imagine it --humans all over the world holding hands, chanting in unison --at that point all the little junk genes will rotate north and join in an asymetrical fashion with all the other genes and we will, as one harmonious force, EVOLVE.

Now you know.

Karridine! I just got a wicked virus from that site you linked.

Here's a biodiesel link to a site that my Tiny Firewall does NOT report as viral...

/The concept is a good one: set aside a tiny part of one sunny state, dedicate it to algae-biodiesel production, and end all foreign imports!

A billion from Soros divided into bitesized unnamed packets goes a long way.

Hey...whattya know? Obama had AGAIN changed his mind on Ayers..."I knew him but thought he was rehabilitated"...Jeez...how in God's name is this guy winning?

I have a theory that respectability now consists of your ability to game the system. Soros looked at the Presidency from a marketing POV and found that Americans used to love a strong figure - now we love a Weasel.

So he purchased a Weasel, and we're lining up to buy.

This goes excellent with hot coffee tomorrow morning

"After all this time we still don't know a lot about Sen. Obama's murky Chicago past, and maybe we won't until he's in the White House for a while and the mainstream media looks to actual reporting for its orgasmic thrills."

Heh.
