Someone is Crazy

Is Bitter there? I'd rather talk to her than Disappointed
Though she's not quite as fun as Good'n'Mad
You'd better put her on
She can change the game
She can make me say I'm sorry

You throw your hands up in the air and swear you didn't know
You think the world revolves around you but it doesn't so
You sit and spin
Baby someone is crazy and it's you

They created the financial crisis. They passed the the CRA & gave money to Acorn & others to intimidate banks to make bad subprime mortgage loans. HUD now admits to 5 million loans to illegals. That's what they admit to so you know that there is more. Barry himself was a legal counsel for ACORN.

I think few traders with foriegn connections to and ties to some new upcoming legislature are behind this Yo Yo crap. Normal traders are either in or they are out. Short traders would have to be insane or very wealthy to play this game. One firm sell's high and buys the stock back low. Firm A. get's a loss write off. Firm B. Maintains a gain. What if both firms are connected and can afford to lose a certain amount for some (unknown to us) future gain.

re: #138 eschew_obfuscation

Little child on Christmas morning finds among the presents a pile of horse-sh@t. "OH BOY, OH BOY....THERE MUST BE A PONY HERE SOMEWHERE!"

Actually, it's best known as a Reagan anecdote:

Over lunch today I asked Ed Meese about one of Reagan's favorite jokes. "The pony joke?" Meese replied. "Sure I remember it. If I heard him tell it once, I heard him tell it a thousand times."

The joke concerns twin boys of five or six. Worried that the boys had developed extreme personalities -- one was a total pessimist, the other a total optimist -- their parents took them to a psychiatrist.

First the psychiatrist treated the pessimist. Trying to brighten his outlook, the psychiatrist took him to a room piled to the ceiling with brand-new toys. But instead of yelping with delight, the little boy burst into tears. "What's the matter?" the psychiatrist asked, baffled. "Don't you want to play with any of the toys?" "Yes," the little boy bawled, "but if I did I'd only break them."

Next the psychiatrist treated the optimist. Trying to dampen his out look, the psychiatrist took him to a room piled to the ceiling with horse manure. But instead of wrinkling his nose in disgust, the optimist emitted just the yelp of delight the psychiatrist had been hoping to hear from his brother, the pessimist. Then he clambered to the top of the pile, dropped to his knees, and began gleefully digging out scoop after scoop with his bare hands. "What do you think you're doing?" the psychiatrist asked, just as baffled by the optimist as he had been by the pessimist. "With all this manure," the little boy replied, beaming, "there must be a pony in here somewhere!"

"Reagan told the joke so often," Meese said, chuckling, "that it got to be kind of a joke with the rest of us. Whenever something would go wrong, somebody on the staff would be sure to say, 'There must be a pony in here somewhere.'"

This is key to Monday:

"The president spoke ahead of his Saturday meeting in Washington with finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of Seven industrialized countries — the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany, France Italy and Canada. The officials are also meeting with Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, who is spearheading the administration's financial rescue."

Any game changing announcement from this group over the weekend could trigger an upside surge, but expect volatility until after the election and beyond.

re: #17 Power Armored Lizardoid

Wow, one of the few times I'm glad I haven't been investing in the market...Just precious metals like copper, lead, and brass...

Lead...a precious metal. Man, we've come a long ways down.

One of the things about a scientifically advancing economy is how scarcity has a way of bringing forth workarounds. Copper was in tighter supply before we figured out how to use silicon to make fiber optic cables. That freed up most of the copper used by the telecom industry. Look now for carbon fiber in automobiles and airplanes, etc. etc.

There may be a problem with the rare earth elements used in solar photovoltaic. If there is no alternative to those elements as ingredients in solar power cells, large scale solar energy will have to come from using mirrors to concentrate heat and run some sort of thermal cycle engine. This is a promising path anyhow, but it cannot be done small scale and distributed.

You're probably better off investing in these industrially useful metals than in gold. Today's price far exceeds the cost of getting more of the stuff out of the ground, and if somehow the price stayed up where it is now, more mines could be profitably brought back into operation. Unless demand grew tremendously, this would have to force the price down some.

This is way OT but does the lizard community mind giving me some initial thoughts and advice on a new blog post I'm writing up on why I think McCain will still pull this out on Election Day? Keep in mind that is is a very rough draft but here is what I have so far:

I still believe Mccain will be the next President

I still believe that John McCain will be the next President of the United States of America. First of all, contrary to some pundits, the election hasn't happened yet. A month is a lifetime in politics. Anything, and I mean anything can happen between now and Election day. I have a variety of reasons for believing that McCain will pull this out. These reasons go from a biased media that has problems reporting the truth, to Obama himself and his campaign. Let us take a look at them in detail.

Media Bias

I believe that media bias will backfire on Election Day. I think the American people are way smarter then the Liberal media in this country are willing to admit. Americans don't like being told what to do. They also don't like being called 'racist' if they don't vote for Obama. I know I don't. Mainstream media in this nation is, to a degree, a dying profession. i think this will be the last election where they have a sizable effect. The media in this country have never been fully trusted. I think this will be the last straw. media bias has been showing itself in a couple different forms. it goes from "Guess the party affliation' when a Dem politican gets in legal trouble compared to if the pol was a GOP'er where his party gets named in every other sentence. The media is clearly in the tank for obama. they have NEVER questioned him hard. they can go up to Wassila Alaska and find out that 20 years ago Todd palin got a DUI but they can't pursue and look into Obama's ties to ACORN, or Ayers, or Trinity United, or Obama's grades at Harvard, or any papers he wrote at HLR, or anything that may damage 'the one'. Lets call this what it is: BS.

Polling Data

How accurate is the national polling data? I do believe that it offers some accurate information about possible voting trends but it shouldn't be considered 100% accurate. There is a well known phrase that says "The only accurate poll takes place on Election Day". There are some media stories that are reporting that GOP-leaning voters are being under-sampled (need link). Another factor i believe that will have a serious effect on election Day is the "Bradley Effect" ([Link: en.wikipedia.org...] i think this is good for about 5% (at least) of Obama polling numbers. if you add the combination of the bradley effect and the average poll's margin of error together this would make the race a dead heat or even a plus for McCain instead of the current polling that shows a Obama lead.

Obama's Friends

I think the whole situation involving some of Senator Obama's shady friends will have a effect on Election Day. Bill Ayer's Weather Underground membership and what exactly his ties to obama are are finally beginning to get attention and affect voter opinion. Americans don't like terrorism, no matter the cause. Ayers is a unrepentant creep. His friendship with obama does matter.
Will 'Change' Only Help The Democrats?

The conventional wisdom offered by the biased media in this country is that this is a Democrat year. Really? What type of 'Change' do the American people truly want? A under-reported fact is that for the last 2 years that the Dem party has controlled Congress they have had lower approval ratings then even the President (link needed). If Americans truly want 'Change' wouldn't this mean tossing the Dems out?

to be continued.......

I'd relish it. My county (Will) went for Bush in 2000 and 2004, and has been growing rapidly, as have the counties next door (Grundy and Kendall). Both of these also went for Bush in 2000 and 2004.

We just have to convince Peoria, St Clair, and Champaign Counties that it is in their best intrest to oppose anything from Cook County.

Probably like most people, they are just afraid to put out any kind of McCain/Palin matter. Cars get keyed, signs stolen, yards vandalized. In that area, people may be worried they will be targeted if Obama wins/loses on election night.

I'm just contrary and I put the stuff up. I get people driving by all day waving, honking horns, etc... I also get people that come up when I'm out and ask questions and talk. I've encountered very few cases of hostility and only one where there were implied threats. I merely look over to my old mattock handle leaning against the wall.

The Current Economic Trouble

Yes, the economy is in a bad place right now. But will the current economic problems favor only the Dems on Election Day? There is finally some media reporting of Dem attempts to block any review of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae accounting/book-keeping practices over the last few years (link needed). The Dems viewed those companies as cushy jobs for loyal dem party members. The Dems also used these companies as piggy banks for people who truly shouldn't have been buying homes. That knowledge will hurt the Dems. Americans ARE truly upset about what has happened, i think they will take out some of that anger on the Dem party.

Senator Obama And His Campaign Staff

Is Senator Obama and his staff arrogent? i believe they are. Even some Liberal media types are finally beginning to report on this (link needed). A lot of joking was made during Obama's nomination speech about the "Greek temple' backdrop he used. However, I once read a different take on this (link needed). during Obama's european adventure, he wanted to give a speech at berlin's Brandenburg gate. the German governent declined to provide that location so Senator Obama had to move the speech to a different berlin location. those were not "Greek Columns' in the background stage. they were mock ups of the brandenburg gate. basically, obama didn't get what he wanted during his trip, so he want ahead at invesco field and did it anyway. if that isn't a sign of arrogance, what the hell is? His arrogance has filtered down to his campaign staff. there are reports that his staff doesn't listen to other dem party members or accept advice from them (link needed). Also the Obama staff has been setting up "Obama-only" campaign offices and that he doesn't fund-raise for other party members or provide money to the national party (link needed). that has got to rankle other Dems, Will that have a effect on election day?, I think it will.

PUMA Factor/Women's Vote

Has the Nomination of Senator Obama caused irrepairable damage to the Dem party? I'm no fan of Hillary Clinton, but i do think in terms of experience and overall political knowledge she would have made a better candidate then Obama. I think the party's rejection of Hillary and McCain's choice of Sara palin will affect the women's vote in major ways. Polling data is showing that Senator Obama is Still not closing the deal with Women voters (link needed) If women go for McCain in a big way, Obama is in trouble.

Youth Vote

Will the Youth vote actaully show up for Senator Obama on election day? If past trends are looked at, i would say the answer is NO. (link needed for '04 youth vote trends) In the '04 election cycle the much vaunted 'youth vote' was supposed to be firmly in the tank for John kerry. How did that work out of Kerry? Is John kerry currently president of the United states of America? enough said about the 'youth vote'. i hate to be cynical, but they will NOT be a factor on Election Day. ("Dude, did you vote today?. Aww hell man, i was too busy updating my Facebook page. i totally forget about voting').

Bottom Line, i still believe that john McCain will be the next president. If you have any thoughts, comments, whatever i can be reached at chicagodudewhotrades@gmail.com. thank You for your time

Like I said this is a very rough draft, I'm still trying to get the hang of writing. I have good ideas sometimes but I have noticed that I have a problem closing my articles out with a strong finish. Any help and ideas to improve my writing will be greatly appreciated. thanks

I go out to lunch at least once a week and am surprised at how well restaurants are doing at lunch, I would figure a little slow down but I don't see it. The places that did go out of business did so because their rent was raised.

A family friend finally gave up and closed his restaurant last week. A nice Italian place in a strip mall - fantastic food - strip mall atmosphere. He wasn't bringing in enough business in our suburban area. The place a few doors down was doing a booming business but it was all liquer sales.

I think the increased gas prices (made worse by the supply to Atlanta suffering post-Ike) took to much discretionary income out of our collective middle class pockets.

I was talking with a guy at a trade show this week. He does pre-employment physicals. He said that his most solid market segment is the restaurant industry, from fine dining to fast food.
In his opinion, that industry is recession proof. Kind of surprised me.

People don't have time to cook anymore, when both parents are working, kids are going to dance classes, sports events, etc., after school.

How many supermarkets these days have a salad bar? Or packaged salads? Cooked rotisserie chickens? Pre-seasoned and portion ready packaged meats?

In Louisiana, red beans and rice traditionally a "Monday" dish. The reason why: Many years ago, before electricity and washing machines, Monday was wash day, and red beans could be put in a pot and cooked all day with little or no tending, allowing the wimmin-folks to get the washing done.

Proper food preparation takes time - and people just don't have it anymore.

I talked with my liberal stupid-a** sister last night and she was feeding me this stuff about the angry crowds, and Sarah Palin inciting hatred, shouts of "kill" etc. I did a little checking and found one small incident recently where one person, out of thousands, shouted something threatening. Obviously that has been blown all out of proportion. Disgusting.

That's the crap that the MSM have been reporting. Angry Republicans...

State spending per pupil in Chicago exceeds almost all other districts.
The student reading and math proficiency is a disgrace.
Preference is give to graduates of Chicago State which turns out semi- literate teachers

Unfortunately, these counties usually vote Dem. St Clair is home to East St Louis. Peoria has a lot of union types (Caterpiller). Champaign is home to the University of Illinois. Of these, I think Peoria would be the easiest to flip this year.

It is interesting to speculate about possible rioting and mass criminal uprisings if O loses. I lived through the riots in Chicago when MLK was assassinated, and that was pretty bad. But that took place in a ghettoized community and was fairly contained. If the Obamaniacs go postal on us, they are going to be scattered around all over the map, and it is a lot harder to gain momentum with an uprising when your force is scattered.

Plus, we are clinging to their guns, aren't we?

And to add to today's joy, in case this hasn't been posted earlier, Christopher Buckley, the son of William F. Buckley, has come out today endorsing Obama.

His reasons seem to be that right wingers supporting Palin are kooks, because his friend Katherine Parker (the WAPO's house conservative) got over 12,000 angry emails in respone to her column declaring Sarah Palin totally unfit for office; and (2) he believes that everything Obama has done is non-ideological and just done to get the presidency, and that Obama will be a centrist president.

The most charitable thing to say is that he is still a bit unhinged by grief, having lost both his parents within the last 18 months or so,

I confess I don't know how to make a link, but young Buckley's maifesto can be found in a blog called The Beast". I also saw a reference to it on NRO Corner.

You know, what we really need to guide us through this economic mess is a wet-behind-the-ears rock star wannabe who's so in love with his own reflection he can't see anyone or anything past it. What we need is to beat big and small businesses down a little more -- no, a lot more -- and redistribute what's left of their wealth to people who will use it to buy bigger cars and wider screen tvs. What we need is higher taxes and fewer jobs and a clueless elitist snob at the helm who can look down his nose at all of the struggling people and pity them.

Isn't it obvious?

Rioting can also require someone directing it from behind the scenes. If there is any rioting after the election, I would suspect that it would be completely orchestrated by some leftist group.

I'm sorry, I love the image of some steely-eyed leftist in a bunker somewhere, giving orders over his short-wave radio (or disposable cell, or whatever), while wimpier leftists run in and out with pieces of paper and push pins into maps. It's like something out of an Eric Flint novel.

However, it's not going to happen. Someone may try it. But the three rousing speeches turning into revolution scenario requires an active mob, and (bluntly), if there's one thing the American Urban mob isn't, it's active.

Short of a hotly-contested sporting event and lots of liquor, count on the inner cities staying pretty quiet.

Actually, I am starting to think, this is an element of warfare.

Take a look at how he did Britain in 1992, and Thailand in 1997.

There exists quite a bit of documentation that shows he manages to devalue a country's currency, as a way of affecting political change.

His OSI is all over Eastern Europe. Remember all of the colored revolutions? Orange, Red?

Seriously. Read up on it.

Heh.
I remember Britain 1992 only too well! Mortgage interest rates went up to 15%, thanks to him ..

And I do recall Thailand and the other 'Tiger economies'.
Thing is - its only afterwards that his fingerprints are found, not before and not during.

He's had a hand in the Rose revolution in Georgia as well - he is the most dangerous man living, and I think its power he's after, not just money.

Good grief. The Dow plunged more than 700 points earlier, and now it’s rebounded all the way into positive territory.

That actually worked out pretty well. I made quite a bit of money shorting the DOW ETF (DIA) on the way down. And then riding it long on two of the upswings.

George Soros has written a new book called THE NEW PARADIGM FOR FINANCIAL MARKETS: The Credit Crisis of 2008 and What it Means. In it he predicts the end of an era: the end of a long phase of stability, the end of the dominance of the US market, and the end of the dollar.

Natch.

I think it's thread-worthy, given his role in the US election.

Scrolled down the thread just now, looking specifically at comment ratings.

A few 3's, one 4, one 5, and finally a 7 -- all the way down at #122, after we were wandering into "OT" territory.

Strikes me as an indication that we're:
1. in shellshock, unwilling to commit, or
2. that no one knows WTF is going on (ie, being up-dinged for wisdom.)

Very few of us are financial wizards. Most people need outside assistance just to do their taxes each year. That's in normal times. With the financial world going erratic and not even the "financial gurus" can explain it without conflicting with one another (opinions at this point) then how is the average person going to explain it? Some people are losing big bucks and just can not look at unemotionally; others without money at stake, in the short term, will see this mess carry over into other arenas.

My opinion is to ride it out like we have earlier if possible. Like others on here have stated; why sell when low. Have faith. I know-easy to say ;-)>

You've seen post-election rioting in the United States of America before?

Uh, when?

We came very close to having riots when our incumbent mayor was first voted in (Memphis).

He is the first African American mayor to be elected here and now the job is his as long as he wants it.

Anyway, our first African American US Representative Harold Ford Sr and more elected officials where on TV all night pretty much inciting riots if he didn't win. It was a very close race and the then current mayor conceded for the sake of the city.

Ask any Memphis Lizard and they'll back me up, I'm sure. Memphis came very close to burning to the ground that night.

I screwed up taking the nozzle out of my tank and gas gushed all over my leg and the ground when I dropped it. It only stopped when I picked it up again and undid the stay-thingy. I sent The Kid into the store to get him away from me and to get some help. He told them what had happened but NO ONE did a thing. I finally had to walk into the store with gasoline-soaked pants.

I stood at the door and told them what had happened and the stupid fucking clerks didn't even pause while ringing up Goober's six-pack of Bud to ask if I needed help. Only when I screamed that there was gasoline all over the place did anyone respond. One clerk sauntered--yes, SAUNTERED--to the rear to get a man to go check it out. Once he found out that I had turned off the nozzle, he asked me what I wanted him to do.

I told him I was a customer and asked him if he wanted me to go up in flames or if he was gonna' find me a jacket so I could go into the bathroom to remove my clothes. He just stood there and said, "we don't have any jackets in this store." I gave The Kid my check to drop on the counter, stripped right there, walked across the parking lot, dropped my clothes into the trunk, got The Kid in, got in on the passenger's side, started the engine then left. Well, okay. But we are talking 40 years ago here.

Hell, I've seen rioting more recently here in DC (1990), although not on that scale.

I don't think post-Obama-losing rioting is out of the question, but think it's unlikely on any major scale.

If there's rioting, it'll more than likely be in the ultra-hardcore liberal areas or inner cities like NY, LA, or San Fransisco. That always seems to be where most of the riots have originated in the past. What these cities sow, they'll reap.

I tell ya! Those Obamanation junkies really don't know how bad they will regret pushing the conservative masses past their point of keeping quiet and being pushed around.
I saw it first hand back in the days when the Iranians took over our embassy in Tehran, and Ahyatollah Khomeini started running his mouth.
I lived in a small town in Texas that had a junior college in it with a high concentration of Iranian students. The town was Athens, Texas.
Some of those [bigoted word]ed idiots gathered around the town square and started chanting and brandishing their protest signs. After about an hour, several truckloads of those old redneck country boys drove up to the square and unloaded. I'm tellin' ya', I saw it firsthand. There was Iranian teeth, hair, and eyeballs all over the street. Those ignorant bastards went back to their dormitories and wouldn't show their faces for weeks. Some of them resigned and went back to Iran.

Fuck the rioters! Let em' come. It's about time to straighten their asses out.

GM (genetic modification) Watch: Former Monsanto Director Advising Obama
Top Obama adviser, Moses Mercado has worked as a lobbyist with Ogilvy Government Relations who is registered to represent several dozen big-name clients, including Monsanto and Pfizer Inc.
Four of Obama's five advisors on science come from the life sciences. They include Gilbert Omenn, a director of the biotech firm Amgen, and Sharon Long who until a year ago was on the board of directors at Monsanto.

The Team: Sharon Long: Recently stepped down as dean of Stanford University's School of Humanities & Science to return to her research on the symbiosis of soil bacteria with alfalfa. Long resigned last year from the Board of Directors of Monsanto, an agricultural biotechnology corporation.
Harold Varmus: President of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He won a Nobel Prize in 1989 for breakthroughs in cancer genetics. Under Clinton, he directed the National Institutes of Health; the agency's budget doubled, but his legacy was tainted by his permitting NIH researchers to take excessive payments from pharmaceutical companies.
Gilbert Omenn: Professor of internal medicine, human genetics and public health at the University of Michigan. Former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; Omenn is a director of Amgen, a biotechnology company, and served in the Office of Science and Technology Policy under President Carter.

My Dear ole' Dad is a retired automotive engineer. i got the gasoline lecture many times, many years ago. It is the fumes that are dangerous. The young (and the types that generally work at the gas station) have no idea how dangerous they are.

they should have poured kitty litter or some similar substance on the spill, but I guess they aren't even trained to do that. I think gas stations have some product for that on hand at all times. You could call/email/write BP corporate offices (right here in the Very Far Western burbs of Chicagoland) to tell them about it.

Many gas stations out here keep a spill kit posted right by the pump, but I do not believe it is a requirement. Or else many don't meet the requirement.

If you are going to play in the stock market for a living, which is something I do now that I am retired from working for an institutional investment firm, the first thing you have to understand is that you have to study, history, religion and, psychology. All the rest is a side-show. Yeah, you really should know about fcf, ebitda, and all the rest but that is a little less important than the other junk. Makay "Extraordinary Popular Delusions" or the more recent version that centers on finance "Devil Take The Hindmost" are fairly mandatory reading. The past couple of years have not been fun. But as the saying goes "shit happens". The one thing you must do if you decide to get into the market in more than a 401k sort of way is to make sure your obligations are covered. The worst thing to have happen is to be forced to sell assets that are worth more than you are selling them for just because you need to pay the rent or taxes. I will leave folks with one thought. The market has been down now pretty severely. When do you want to buy and when do you want to sell? Personal like, I like to buy when the market is down and sell when the market is high. My personal criteria for what I buy is the acid test of "Would you buy the entire company at the price offered if you could, with the knowledge you would never sell it." A bit like Buffett there, but so it goes. We are both G&D types. There are some, and I repeat some, companies out there that are on the bargain shelf. There are also some closed-end funds that are on the bargain table too. I will not pimp for any particular ones, but suggest that if you can do your own due diligence, you may find some stuff that might get cheaper short term, but which will reward you long term.

re: #577 MandyManners

Sounds like you have had a bad day Mandy..
a couple years ago i was at a quickymart type place when the same thing happened to a young lady at the next pump..The nozzel malfunctioned and gas went every where. She started to panic and really needed help..
I ran over and got the nozzel to turn off..It was stuck on..who knew that could happen?
some punk 18 year old came out from the store and starting yelling at her that she had screwed up the pump...Bad mistake ' my friends'
He turned around and went into the store with me right behind him..
I really got into his face and totally embarrassed him in front of all the customers. I can get really loud and mean when i'm pissed off..
For some reason he was really helpful to her...she was in tears..saying she didn't know what she did wrong..I said in a loud voice..you did nothing wrong and this guy is going to do whatever it takes to help you...

I am shaking my head, trying to keep from laughing.

The line you should have used on him was for you to pick up one of their Bic lighters and say, "Unless you wanna see me make like a pissed-off Buddhist monk or a human Hindenburg, I suggest you get me a f**king change of clothes." "Oh yeah, try and douse me with a Big Gulp, while you're at it."

You know, you could have also said. "Never mind. Just give me a pack of Camels and a lighter" just to see what his expression would have been.

I wouldn't put too much stock in words repeated by a 5-year old.

It could easily have been Mom telling her girl, "when Obama whens that'll prove we can do anything we want", i.e., a black person can be President; and the little girl is repeating it in kindergarten language.

That's really good. Be an apologist----spit!

re: #577 MandyManners

If you own BP stock, sell it. The people who work at this particular BP are too stupid to pour piss out of a boot.

There was still fuel spilled on the ground.

In Mass, the lever that lets the gas flow while you aren't holding the handle gets removed from self-service pumps.
And the Hess station I (used to) go to seems to be pretty responsive to even small spills.

However, the Shitgo station my wife goes to (the only station in town) almost filled her car, and I don't mean the tank, the "attendant" got some gas into the open window because he wasn't paying attention. Fortunately, she closed the window before much got inside.
The place is now under new management, but still sends their tribute to the Hitler wannabe in Venezuela. (New management = Apu, who also owns one of the convenience stores and the laundromat, bought the station.)

I can see that Uncle Creepy losing this election is just a part of his "reaching across the aisle". In a speech today, he advised supporters not to "be afraid" of a Obomba victory. And that they should "be respectful". Like the media is being respectful to you and your running mate, John? The media can get mad but the people can't?

McCain is a lost cause... I'm sorry for urging people not to count him out. If he wins, it will be in spite of his own efforts. And, at this point, it's looking like it would take a miracle.

What a bunch of assholes.
BTW in Canada they outlawed those stay-thingies at self-serve stations years ago. Some people still wedge their gas cap in there to serve the same purpose, which is also against the law.
You were lucky.

647 Shr_Nfr  Fri, Oct 10, 2008 4:55:06pm

I want to also note something today that flew under the radar of most of the average people around. The 400 bn (yes the b number) of Lehman credit default swaps settled at auction today at around 9 cents on the dollar. That basically means that one bunch of people owe another bunch of people 364 bn dollars cash on the barrel head. That has been some of the action leading up to today. The people who sold the swaps, have to come up with the money. To do that it does not matter if you want to sell something or not, you have to sell enough to pay off the swap. Granted you got money for the swap up front, given the way swaps work. To do a Credit Default Swap on the debt of a company is basically a put contract. You pay them so much up front and then so much annually for the right to put a company's bonds to someone. So the full loss to the people who had to pony up the money for the defaulted debt was less than the 364 bn bucks they had to shell out. The reason that the settlement was done as an auction is that there were more swaps out there than bonds. Something similar was done with Calpine when it filed for bk. People besides the bondholders will buy these swaps. If you are a firm who is owed money by another firm for contracts in progress, you may buy a swap as insurance that you get paid off if the other firm dies. But anyway, somebody had to raise 364 bn bucks to pay off today. It was expected to be several percent less than that, but 9% cleared the market instead of the expected 13%. 4% of 400 bn is still a lot of money (like 16 bn bucks) some of the sell-off this past week has been due to this event today. Next week is a triple witch week with expiration of options, futures, etc. Expect another Nantucket Sleigh-ride.

649 littleO  Sat, Oct 11, 2008 11:13:36am

I'll just stick this in where no one will read it.
Does anyone wonder why this urgency was thrust upon us unsuspecting citizens. One day we are bussing along just fine. The next minute we are in a financial melt down. Then panic strikes the markets to such an extent that Congress, with some ruffled feathers, passes, by light speed, the largest bailout of our financial system ever.
Thinking contrarianly (is that a word) I suspect that many feared that the dhimms would win big in November, In which case Barney, Nancy and Dodd would fabricate their rescue plan for the sub-prime morgage debackle they helped cause and everyone knows would grow cancerous. So, Bush and Company jump-start the slow nateral progress of things, announced the crisis and is now in the position to pour the foundation and build the framework for what will be a new capitalism and world global economic system.
Don't frackin' laugh the posibility off. Consider it!
