Threatening to do something stupid like that, with the Russian Navy keeping watch over the situation, is probably not a very good idea. I'm thinking that they may use the sort of discretion that the Russians have been known for in previous hostage situations.

Have a friend in the oil biz. He worked/manged a rig offshore there. Periodically the goons would boat out to the rig and threaten. Over the side was thrown a bag of cash. Problem solved. Cost of doing business.

Same friend was kidnapped too. Another bag of cash. He's back in the States now.

The news you never see.

83 Ruthless  10/10/08 4:46:03 pm reply quote

I get a little tired of hearing how McCain should bring up all the dirt on Obama and throw it around. Don't get me wrong, I think the dirt should be out there — but it is NOT McCain's job to bring it out. It is the job of the Frickin' MEDIA to do that, and they have demonstrated a marvelous ability to do so when Palin was involved while completely failing to vet the Obamanation and all his questionable associates, past actions, and persona.

The problem is not a lack of will by McCain, but a complete failure of the media to properly inform the American people. They are playing a role that borders dangerously close to treasonous.

Look what happens when McCain or Palin even slightly try to bring up these points. First, the Obamanation campaign denies everything and manufactures fictional dirt to throw back (and of course play the racism card many times a day). Look what they have done to attempt to destroy Palin. Next, the media ignores the real dirt on the Obamanation, minimizes it, or excuses it without checking or revealing the truth. Third, the media DO NOT ignore the dirt that the Obamanation group manufactures against McCain-Palin. And around and around it goes — and that benefits the McCain campaign how?

McCain is right to steer away from these things. If the press and media fail in their responsibilities, then it is a job for 527 groups. I think (and hope) that they are going to unload on the Obamanation going forward after the final debate next week. Remember that the McCain campaign must hold its fire until close to the election, because the more time the opposition (including the MSM) has to discredit and sweep it all under the rug, the less effective it will be.

So if McCain doesn't start flinging mud during the debate next week, don't despair because I think it would be turned against him anyway. Yes, perhaps he will have to at least make reference to some of the main issues, but he should not allow himself to come off as mean, spiteful, possibly desperate in the eyes of ordinary Americans who just don't know the truth about Obama. He has to maintain the tactical high ground and arrange the battlefield for the killing stroke at the end.

Meanwhile, voters will really begin to focus on the issues in the last two weeks of the campaign, so those are going to be the important ones. Don't despair if McCain shows the courage and good judgment to stand above the mud slinging. That is not Presidential, it would not be productive, and the truth can come out in other ways than from the mouths of McCain and Palin. Again, it is really the job of the media and they have refused to serve their proper role in this.

Let us never forget that our nation's media, for the most part, are anti-American, which begs the question of just exactly what they do stand for? Well, they are part of the entertainment business, so they must be in it for the money. And yet, there must be more to it than that. Remember that in the days of the McCarthy hearings that many of those accused of being Communists were from the media and entertainment segments of our society. And, despite what you may have heard (from the media and entertainment segments in fact), many of the claims were based on fact. Yes, Virginia, there were Communists back in those days, and they were concentrated in the media and entertainment segments, and if they had been able to many of them would have acted to undermine the United States in whatever way they could. In those days, they supported the USSR. Today, I guess, they are fans of Palestinians, the Castro Brothers, and Venezualan thug-for-life Chavez among others. Pfah!

Today we have become so much inundated by PC thinking that the media and entertainment segments of our society are not afraid to openly declare themselves. They know there will be no new McCarthy hearings, for they are protected by PC armor. They are betrayers of their own country.

It is a situation that has gone on for years and the Civilized World does nothing. This problem could be solved in one weekend, if we had the cojones to do what needs to be done.

What we're seeing here is history repeating itself.

In every piracy outbreak in the past, going back to the Lukkan raiders who attacked Cyprus and the shipping of the Egyptian New Empire in the 14th -13th Centuries BC, piracy has always flourished in areas of high densities of oceangoing commerce where naval protection was weak or absent. Such "pirate paradises" invariably ended abruptly when they became enough of a threat to commerce to incur the wrath of one or more major naval powers of the day. The Lukkans were destroyed in the 12th Century BC by the Egyptians and Greeks- at which point some Greek city-states turned pirate themselves, until smashed in the 10th Century BC by the combined forces of other Greek city-states, the Phoenicians, and the Assyrians.
Piracy died out in the Med after that from the 5th Century BC to the 1st Century BC, due to the Greeks. When the Cilicians decided to "go a-roving" around that time (about 80 BC- 50 AD) they were promptly hammered by the Roman Empire, the 800-pound gorilla of naval powers of the day. (Yes, I know most "traditional" histories hold that Rome was not much of a naval power. We now known that in fact they were the biggest in the world back then.)

The pattern repeats throughout history. The "Spanish Main", the Barbary pirates, etc. All held sway over limited areas until they did enough damage to piss off one or more major sea powers- at which point, they were "terminated with extreme prejudice".

I suspect that the pirates of the Horn of Africa have reached that same point. They better hope their wills are made out. They'll probably be needing them soon.

One minor problem is most tankers, freighters, and cargo ships just don't have room for the extra room required for a security force and most merchant sailors just aren't soldiers capable of engaging in a fight to the death scenario.

Are you kidding me? Some of the toughest SOBs around are in the merchant marine. And we're not talking about having to fend off well-armed vessels. Most pirates are in Zodiacs--which won't float very well when sprayed down with 7.62mm fire. Some small arms on tankers and some rudimentary drills will suffice to fend off the small pesky pirates.

Correct. under maritime law (bless the politicians' pointy little heads) even small arms are verboten on merchant ships.

That said, it's quite common for ships sailing in such hostile waters (off Somalia, around Indonesia, etc.) to hire "special security forces", have (unmanifested) weapons on board, or both.

I realize that. I've seen and dealt with merchant mariners from around the world at various ports of call myself. Although usually not with automatic weapons and RPGs in a bar.
The mother boat with many more of those smaller boats is close by. And most countries, as well as shipping companies don't want to incur the problems that arise from a battle at sea.

Dunno - but if they're doing that in that lady's state, then they're doing it in others. And interpreting the results of the questions instead of outright asking who the ones being polled are voting for.

That would totally discount the PUMAs, and other democrats (and anti-war repubs) who are voting for McCain.

One worry I have is that if Obomba is elected, and he becomes mired in all the scandals of the Dems and his own, the media will try to make blacks feel like they are being isolated and punished along with him. And if no scandals stick to him, then the same pressure will be applied for anyone who merely voices opposition to Obomba policies. Basically, Dems will dance through all their legislation (at least for two years) and step up to the mike afterward to spit on the Republicans whether they fought against a bill or not -ala Nancy Pelosi-, and anyone who has a problem with it will be thus condemned as a racist, criminal and potential genocidal devil.

I hope I'm just deluded there, because that doesn't sound like it's going to do anyone involved any good. But what we've seen up to now looks to be on course to it.

The limited number of guns are for the ships master and his Mates, not for the crew, they are not expected to be combatants, not paid, trained or equiped to be, no merchant can afford to pay for a defense force, Insurance might subsidize but that is seen as a naval function, detachments or escorts.

Hello everyone. My son-in-law returned from his 2nd tour in Iraq last Saturday. We left Sunday morning to go down to Oceanside to welcome him home. It was a great reunion. My husband makes the best barbecued ribs on the planet. He has a secret family recipe for marinating. I got to see my grandkids and visit with everyone else who showed up too. Of course there is always a fly in the ointment isn't there? My niece came with her son who is two years old. He seems to be a bully already. When he wants a toy the other kids have he grabs them around the throat with the crook of his arm and knocks them down so he can have it. His mother is oblivious. She lets him run loose. At one point he was trying to wrench the baby gate off the stairs and I told him to stop, get down from there, you don't need to go upstairs. He turned around and glared at me and continued to muscle the gate. His mother was right there and did nothing. I went over and removed from the stairs. He started crying and ran to his mother. His mother said, "Oh my poor baby." I don't think the kid ever heard the word NO before.

Gambino's is now in Lafayette. I bet they would ship for you. :-)

Doberge is THE BEST. Although Poupart's Bakery here, a genyoowine patisserie outdoes Gambino's by leaps and bounds. Not much better than doberge.

I think a lot of this is a result of the so-called "collegial atmosphere" of the Senate, of which it was once said that "You normally call someone 'my distinguished colleague' even when you know he's a dyed-in-the-wool son-of-a-bitch. Because sometime, you might need his vote". (Adam Clayton Powell, IIRC)

That said, I really think McCain needs to be less... reassuring ... about The One.

I would have put it like this;

I don't believe that Senator Obama is a bad man. However, I also do not believe that he is as good as he believes himself to be. I think he has an exaggerated opinion of his own competence and brilliance that is not borne out by his record. And when I see his list of friends and associates, I question his judgment in associating with people who clearly hate this country, and its people, as much as they obviously do.

And considering some of the things he has said on the record about Americans, how they 'cling' to things like guns, or religion, in times of stress, as opposed to simply accepting that other people may have values different from his, but not necessarily wrong in the eyes of most of their neighbors, I honestly have to ask if he has enough understanding of, or empathy for, people who don't come from the same background he does to treat them with the respect he insists on receiving from them, himself.

And if he can't do that- how can he claim to be fit to be their President?

That's known as "calling him an idiot in a way that can not be construed as mean".

/except by DailyKos, that is, but they'll call you "mean" no matter what you do if you're not swooning whenever The One levitates by

cheers

Excellent, the Brits announced the Ghurkas had arrived and the Argies folded on the spot, saved lives. To expensive though for normal merchant service I'd think, it is always the money.

A couple of countries running routine patrols with air assets would bring it under control. It is in everyone's interest to do so. That way the companies don't have to hire security and merchant marines don't have to be trained to fight.

Start whacking the Somali pirate assets on sea and on land and they will fold.

During the 2003 Louisiana gubernatorial election Bobby Jindal ran a "clean" election where he refused to attack the character or failings of his opponent, Kathleen Blanco. All the while there were insane accusations leveled at Jindal by the Democrats. These ranged from being a "foreigner", an "Arab", an "evil Washington bureaucrat who robbed old people of medical benefits", and a slew of other insults.
Bobby Jindal took the high road in 2003 and lost to Blanco. Two years later during Katrina Louisiana voters saw what kind of governor they elected. A deer in the headlights.

McCain's election strategy seems to be doing the same. My fingers are crossed for McCain/Palin to win.

I have been searching around this evening for the reason for that amazing speech. Apparently some of McCain's advisors (the very refined RINOS?) were upset by the raucous mood at the events, which they thought was "ugly" and convinced McCain to make that astounding statement about respecting Obama and an Obama presidency was nothing to be afraid of. He'd better jettison those advisors pronto, they're probably the same turkeys that buried Sarah alive for a month after the convention.

It's the clearest picture given yet of McCain's motivation and real attitude.

He does not want to relinquish his perceived seat in the middle of the aisle. He's dumb enough to believe that it's his "decency" and not the fact that he stabbed the Republicans in the back on numerous occasions that has made his beloved mainstream media give him phony accolades.

Look, McCain wants to enjoy all the fringe benefits of being on the left. The media says nice things about you, you get to appear on Saturday Night Live, the don't pore through videos of you frame by frame to find one where you're making a dumb looking face they can paste it all over the place. (A-la Bush's infamous "chimp" picture)

He thinks he's going to loose and he hopes by being nice the liberals will invite him back to the party. And if he's a useful little whore to them (pardon my candor) they just might.

I said a long time ago that McCain and Huckabee were pretty much elevated to the Republican ticket by the Democrat allied media because they knew that they were so vulnerable for their respective weaknesses. This plan by the left to play an active roll in selecting their opponent's is bearing fruit I'm afraid.

Never forget, McCain, though possibly a little better than Obama was never really on the side of the right. Maybe that can be of some condolence.

I know a lot of people who only listen to NPR, watch snippets of CNN, and read the head lines of the local pro-Obama news papers. These are smart people and totally uninformed. They spew the BHO propaganda and if you try to "inform" them....they "don't want to argue politics".

/depressing.
