Lizard meet/party - Lizards and mates.
Sunday 26th of Oct. 11 am - 3 pm
Walnut Creek, CA 94595
25 miles East of San Francisco.
Locals and Nomads welcome.
BYOB and a pot luck if you wish.
Bring what ever food you wish to cook.
World class kitchen available. BBQ grills. Picnic area.
BBQ briquettes provided.
Heated swimming pool. Bring your suits. Changing rooms etc. available.
We have the ground floor of a 1930s Mansion/museum and outdoor patio reserved.
If it rains we have indoors - if not we have both.
My Halloween treat and thanks to LGF - so no cost to you.
Email for directions and location - secure, private, gated/guarded community.
Plenty of parking ... 100+.
For those that are paranoid & suspicious this is a leftist setup - 6 of us have already met once in SF.
RawMuse hosted that one.
We all like each other.
I volunteered to host the next meet.
This is it.

I am now convinced that the warnings about not stopping a Linux install once it has started has some validity to it.
I turned a hard drive into a brick today.
Good for tossing, not so good for computing.

Well, hey ya'll, I'm makin' reservations for my son's weddin' next month to the only Jewish girl in all of Alabama! Who's got suggestions on southern-talk and other Southern stuff and cool places to visit in Birmingham Alabama!
I'm just sorry my future daughter-in-law doesn't have a real Southern accent. Her parents are Yankees. But she is a true Southern belle.

Never ask a woman if she is pregnant, unless you can actually see a baby emerging from her uterus.
Never ask anyone if you can have all their stuff after they are dead.
Never insult their dogs.

Can't you just low-level reformat it and start afresh? You lose any data on it, but unless the hard drive is physically damaged, can't you always just wipe it clean by reformatting it completely?

Nah, they'll just ship it to Africa, like most also-ran merchandise. It'll probably mostly end up in Kenya, given his high standing there.

Finally, a chill thread.
TO THE OVER 50 CROWD...
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up, what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning... uphill... barefoot... BOTH ways... in pouring rain... yadda, yadda blah, blah, blah...
I remember promising myself that when I grew up, There was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and Look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!
There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter, with a pen! Pen Pals – remember them? Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!
Want to see boobs? Google wasn't even thought of so the best you could hope for was swapping old Playboy magazines with your friend who stole them from his dad.
There were no MP3's or iTunes! If you wanted music, you had to catch a bus to the damn record store and buy it yourself! Our equivalent to Napster and Limewire was waiting around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and fuck it all up!
We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it!
And we didn't have Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mum, boss, drug dealer, collections agent, you just didn't know! You had to pick it up and take your chances!
We didn't have any Playstation's or Xbox's with high-resolution 3D graphics! We had the Atari 2600 and Commodore 64! With games Like 'Space Invaders' and 'Double Dragon'. Your guy was a little clunky bunch of pixels! You actually had to use your Imagination! And there was no online multiplayer stuff either. It was just you and your brother and a couple of joysticks that hardly worked.
You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! If you missed it – too bad. It wasn't coming to DVD and there was no downloading from Bit Torrent the next day.
You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel. There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!
And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove ... imagine that! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted Five minutes back in 1980!
Regards, The over 50 Crowd.

Yesterday, it was announced that Karaoke Bank is up for sale and will likely go for a song, while today, shares in Kamikaze Bank were suspended after they nose-dived.
While Samurai Bank is soldiering on following sharp cutbacks, Ninja Bank is reported to have taken a hit, but they remain in the black.
Furthermore, 500 staff at Karate Bank got the chop and analysts report there is something fishy going on at Sushi Bank where it is feared that staff may get a raw deal.

How very interesting. I will have to keep that idea in my back pocket. Does it really work?
For my situation, there is nothing to copy or save. It was a hobby kick-about piece of junk that I was just having some fun with. I was doing a clean install with a full disk partition scheme. I think I may have aborted the install at exactly the wrong moment, or that the disc was just doomed to fail anyway. Hard drives are kind of delicate in a "treat them very gently" sort of way. The machine had a very hard life before I got it. It may have just been the hd's time to shuffle off this mortal coil.
Thanks for the idea though.

Following the problems in the financial markets around the US and Europe, uncertainty has now hit Japan.
In the last seven days Origami Bank has folded. Sumo Bank has gone belly up and Bonsai Bank announced plans to cut some of its branches.
Last Monday when everyone was talking about the bailout someone posted a link to a report that someone had done and at the end of the report it gave a list of banks that were not on good term(close to closing). There was 2 on there from IL....News tonight said one of them had closed today.....That was one heck of long list......wonder how many more on that list is going to close real soon?

re: #78 Syrah
It really works - think of the physics.
Old drive - worn and sloppy.
Frozen drive - shrunk and tight.
You may only get 10 minutes or so out of the drive before terminal failure so don't putz around once you remove it from the fridge.

GM & Chrysler are two limping former giants who over and over again zigged when the market zagged. Add on the almost impossible union commitments and bad management, sad to say but they just aren't very strong companies at this point.
IF they can figure out fuel effeciency or be actually innovative they might just have a chance. I wouldn't count on it though.

I'm dropping down a few lines from Bill Whittle's Essay titled Trinity: The Three Pillars of American Success:
The first of these three pillars has several names: private property, the free market, enlightened self-interest. But the first essential element of the American Trinity, and the hardest to come to grips with, is Capitalism.Capitalism just galls some people. They just. Can't. Stand it.
Now I have thought about this one long and hard, and no matter how I look at it, I come to the same striking conclusion, and that is this:
Where you stand on the political spectrum, what you think of rich and poor people, and what you think about rich and poor nations and how they should act in the world, comes down, in my mind, to one single issue, and one only: Can wealth be created, or can it only be redistributed?
If you believe, as I do, that wealth can be manufactured out of thin air, then there is no limit to the amount of wealth you can amass. And since you are creating it out of thin air, there is no moral onus on making money -- you work hard to create it and have stolen from no one. There is an expression for this: you earned it.
Indeed, since charity depends on excess wealth, excess capacity, the more you make for yourself the better off everyone else is. You can even throw charity out the window if you are so hard-hearted; the fact remains that you will spend that money to get the things you want, and the more you have the more you can spend. That money goes to other people. This interchange is called "The Economy," and rich societies are rich because they understand in their bones the centerpiece of Capitalist thinking: Wealth can be created from thin air by human ingenuity and hard work.
Now people on the left have, in their guts, a revulsion towards the rich and the wealthy, because whenever they see wealth they naturally assume that it was stolen from people without any -- the poor. That rich man in the private jet has taken the wealth from all the poor people and is therefore a criminal.

OK, I may be a little slow, but here are the official rules.
If you must write "y'all," please at least spell it right. It's a contraction of "you all," not ya'll (ya? ll?).
And the final rule: Never address a lone individual as "y'all." It is the plural form of "you," and is to be used only in addressing two or more people. Example: "Hey, how y'all? How's y'momma'n'them?"
Word of caution: don't let yankee transplants who now live in the south (and therefore now know all there is to know about the south) tell you any different.
One last thing... ok two last things:
1. If you are (deranged and) do not believe in gun ownership, keep your mouth shut!

Is Japan just superior to the USA at making cars or is there something more to it? I seriously doubt the American Engineers are not as smart as those in Japan. I did point some the blame at management. Management Stagnation is a by product of bureaucracies of aging publicly traded enterprises. Share holders only want profits, Management want's to make shareholders happy. Share holders have no responsibility for longer term strategic thought. Neither should Management. Can you tell I'm a little biased against large publicly owned companies? I think Ford will be the only company to come through this crisis in the long run. They are now looking for long term stake in their own interest.

That LGF post cites FactCheck.org. If you watch the clip, they state that the Annenberg Foundation funds FactCheck.org and Obama sat on the board of the Annenberg Foundation.
The Obama "birth certificate" has been published in 2 places (electronically, not physically): the Obama campaign website, and FactCheck.org.

I don't think your situation parallels Obama's... and the video is quite compelling, in that Lawyer Berg says: "IF, however, Obama WAS a natural-born citizen, he LOST THAT when his mother married Soetero AND Barry's step-father (adopted him OR acknowledged him) in Indonesia."
It doesn't rest on one tiny piece, but on a whole range of legalities barring Obama from the US presidency!
Being born an American citizen is a birth right that neither Obama's mother or his step-father can abrogate by claiming Obama is an Indonesian. All evidence suggests Obama was born an US citizen and no one can repudiate that citizenship except Obama himself, not his mother, step-father, or crazy uncle.

And if you think FactCheck.org is the last word on things, have a look at their recent defense of Obama here:
Obama (August 2007): "We’ve got to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we’re not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there."
At the time, then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney attacked Obama for the remark. But Obama was on solid ground. As The Associated Press concluded...
Was Obama "dishonorable" to say what he did? That's pretty strong language.
[Link: www.factcheck.org...]
For an elected official to state our troops are "just air-raiding villages and killing civilians" is, at the very least, dishonorable.

If Obama was born in Hawaii to an American mother, and all evidence indicates he was, and if he never renounced his citizenship of the US, he is a natural born citizen. Obama does not need to do anything to retain or regain his natural born status. His parents can never renounce his citizenship for him.
This issue is a non-starter. Worse it's a distraction. This citizenship nonsense has been debunked. There are thousand reasons to vote against Obama. Spreading rumors about Obama's Indonesian citizanship takes time away from talking about his socialist leanings, his bill proposing to give 900 billion to the UN, his plan to dismantle the USA nuclear arsenal, support for radical ACORN like groups, and nationalize the healthcare and oil industry.
Focusing on disproved non issues takes valuable time away from the real issues

Interesting. From a user comment on that article, take it for what it's worth:
By: BrianHThe Indonesian issue: as a child, 6-10, he would have had to take his mother's adoptive citizenship. When she divorced and returned to the US, there is no record she re-instated her American citizenship, and hence it was up to Barrack to do it for himself, between the ages of 18 - 21.
At age 20, he was still using his Indonesian passport. Neither prior to that time nor in the subsequent 1 year he had to swear the Oath of Allegiance in front of a qualified official is there any record he did so. At age 22, the window closed. So his only active remaining citizenship is Indonesian.

You know, it wasn't that long ago that something like this would've been a major scandal.
You know - and, let's be clear on this - uh - ah - and all the rest.
It is up to us!
Let's keep it on and git it on. Max.

What is it with Obama and pie?
First, Obama mentions it 13 times in 86 seconds:
It all started when Obama began telling one of his new favorite stories about a visit to a diner in Ohio with OH Governor Ted Strickland. The details of the story are unimportant, and frankly, sometimes unintelligible in the peerless plethora of pie references, but it went like this:
"I was in this small town in Ohio called Georgetown, OH – little town," he began, "And we went to a diner because I decided I wanted some pie (1)." At this point a woman in the Philadelphia crowd, listening to the story, offered to make Obama a treat. "You gonna make me some pie (2)?" he asked, "What kind of pie do you make (3)? Sweet potato pie (4)? Alright. Alright. We might have to have a sweet potato pie (5) contest. I'll be the judge. Cause I know my sweet potato pie (6). But they did not have sweet potato pie (7) at this particular establishment," he said speaking again of the diner in Ohio. "So instead I got coconut crème pie (8). I'll take a crème pie (9), I don't mind. I like all kind of pie (10). The Governor of Ohio, he had lemon meringue pie (11) . So we had ordered our pie (12), and the employees there decided they wanted to take a picture of me," he concluded, "But just as we were finishing up taking the picture, the owner comes out, with our pie (13).
Then, Obama later breaks that record by mentioning pie 15 times in 104 seconds:
At which point, as usual, someone in the crowd listening offered some pie of their own.
"You make pie(3)?" Obama asked? "What kind of pie (4) you make? Sweet potato pie (5)? I like sweet potato pie (6). I’m thinking of having a sweet potato pie (7) here in Philadelphia? Because I’ve heard a lot of people are saying they can make sweet potato pie (8). I’ll put it up against my mother in laws sweet potato pie (9). Alright, you give up? Nah. You. So anyway they did not have sweet potato pie (10) in South OH. So I had coconut cream pie (11). The governor of OH he had lemon meringue pie (12). So we ordered our pie (13)and I decide that I’m going to take a picture with the wait staff."
It was at this point that he had matched his record. Had he stopped here, it certainly would have been impressive…yet not historic. I would like to say the crowd stood silent waiting to see if he would break the record, thrilled to say they witnessed someone reach pie immortality. But the truth is, they might have been silent out of concern. How much pie can one person take? Nevertheless, the record was within reach. And Obama continued:
"Just as we were re finished taking the picture and the owner comes out, with our pie (14). So I take my pie (15)."

So you really think that Bush never used cocaine? I don't think he's ever said that he hasn't, only skirted the question.
Its a big world out there and to say that anyone who's ever tried cocaine is ineligible to be President the pool just keeps getting smaller and smaller.

I still remember the first time I watched a "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie. I asked "Who plays Freddy?" My friend responded, "Remember that really shy, nice guy from 'V'? The lizard who didn't want to kill the humans? That's Freddy!"

re: #344 Fenway_Nation
What's the German word I'm thinking of? Isn't it schadenfreude...?
Major studio movies with big budgets that were based on books which tank in the theaters always remind me of "The Other Side of Midnight".
When the book, "The Other Side of Midnight", was released, it quickly became a best-seller. Many fans of the book wanted it to be made into a film, and when the author finally started entertaining offers from movie studios, there was a big bidding war.
Finally, 20th Century Fox won the bidding in 1974, and began filming on the movie in 1975. The final release date was set for the summer, 2 years later, with many people anticipating it as being that year's biggest box-office blockbuster.
At the time, 20th Century Fox had another movie property, with nowhere near the scale of interest that preceeded "The Other Side of Midnight", and that was proving a tough sale to movie theaters. So, the studio announced that, if you wanted to show "The Other Side of Midnight" in your theater, you were required to show this other 20th Century Fox property in your theater for at least 2 weekends. Otherwise, you would not be allowed the more-anticipated movie.
Strangely, the movie version of "The Other Side of Midnight" bombed, and today many of the fans of the book don't even know a movie version was ever made of it.
The other movie that the studio required theaters to show, however, not only did well at the box office, it outperformed every other movie that year. This secondary movie was "Star Wars".

Anyone here know anything about VOIP? Particularly on the iPhone?
I have Packet8 VOIP long-distance phone service, and really like it. Has only faded once in about 4 years, otherwise it's sound quality is as good as any regular phone (which, I understand, uses the same sort of digital encoding).
My particular application is a modem-style box with a plug on one side which plugs into my internet cable router, and a plug on the other side for a regular house-style phone. No computer needed. One low monthly flat rate (approx. $25) for unlimited long distance calling, good for all of the US and Canada. Has features that I haven't bothered to check out. Here's a partial blurb from their website:
Single Line Business Solutions
Ideal for single office or home office (SOHO) professionals, Packet8 Business 2000 digital phone service is packed with features and priced for the cost conscious entrepreneur. Business 2000 can be configured with two roll over lines, a single line with call waiting and an optional dedicated fax line or a single line with multiple handset options (each line sold separately).Mobile Solutions
Packet8 MobileTalk lets cell phone users effortlessly reduce their international calling rates by as much as 90%. With MobileTalk, there are no special PIN codes to keep track of and no long access numbers to dial. MobileTalk provides the highest quality digital voice service and lowest calling rates to any international location.
Companies like this are giving traditional phone-service providers some stiff competition, and the customer benefits either way.

One of my buddies is a day-trader and he alluded to something called 'The Big Mac Index', which is where the cost of a Big Mac in places like Paris, Jakarta, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires or Toronto would give you a good indicator of the exchange rate or general cost of goods and services.
Is there a 'Philly Cheesesteak Index'? I distincly remember being in Philly in 2003, and at a little trailer right across the way from Liberty Plaza, I got a decent philly cheesesteak, a can of soda and a bag of chips for $4! I can think of some resturants around here who have 'Philly Cheesesteak' on the menu but charge nearly twice as much for the privelege.

McCain's letter -- signed by nineteen other senators -- said that it was "...vitally important that Congress take the necessary steps to ensure that [Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac]...operate in a safe and sound manner.[and]..More importantly, Congress must ensure that the American taxpayer is protected in the event that either...should fail."
Sen. Obama did not sign the letter, nor did any other Democrat.
How will the MSM spin this one?

Oh...as far as I know, it's just a single item on a menu that includes pizza, pasta, sandwiches, salads and burgers. This isn't a dedicated Philly Cheesesteak place I'm referring to.

re: #386 Outrider
There were many aerial configs. I never got to do the aerial side, always being on the ground. The closest I come to that was Airborne.
I wasn't aware of the Skywarrior config either. My only experience with Navy was partying. In Augsbug they worked in a closed off section. On the ground. lol
Here's an article by one of the ASA types who flew in this particular bird. They used to have a more comprehensive site up, with photos etc, but caution took them off the 'net in 2002 or so.

The two I linked to are the traditional Philadelphia cheesesteak places the tourists visit. Although this is the one that Sarah Palin visited recently.
/hmmm. smart girl! the prices are more in line.

Summer is approaching so here's a shark story
Great white stalks boaties off Adelaide beach
A FAMILY stalked in their boat by a great white shark off Adelaide yesterday says they feared for swimmers at a nearby beach. The massive shark – one witness said it was longer than 5m – was seen as close as 1km from the West Lakes Shore beach by boaties aboard at least three vessels between 8.30am and 11.30am yesterday.
Surf Life Saving SA was alerted and water police monitored its movements.Aldgate mum Melinda Barnard was aboard an aluminium boat about 4km offshore with her father, Ian Westley, and sons Max, 6, and Eli, 4, when they spotted the huge shark approaching the vessel around 11.15am.
Ms Barnard, 35, said the shark was about as big as the 5m boat she was in.
"He had a nibble of the outboard motor and then nudged the boat before circling us for about 15 minutes," she said.

Yes they stayed with rightymouse and her family as well
My son and Gf were just so happy to experience life with real families as well as doing the tourist thing

They needed a Killer Whale mascot like this one, who prefers shark's liver as a delicacy.
