RetweetUpdate: Haider Was Speeding When He Crashed

World | Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 4:25:58 pm PDT

An update to the story of the death of Austrian Freedom Party leader Jörg Haider: Austria far-right leader Haider speeding before fatal crash.

VIENNA (AFP) – Austrian far-right leader Joerg Haider was driving at more than twice the speed limit after going to a nightclub when he crashed and died this weekend, court officials said Sunday.

Haider was doing 142 kilometres (88 miles) per hour in a 70kph zone when he crashed in the early hours of Saturday, the prosecutors’ office said.

Prosecutor Gottfried Kranza did not say whether Haider had tested positive for alcohol.

Way, way, way OT, but a friend just forwarded me today's Maureen Dowd column. And I just can't restrain myself.

The good news: It's half in Latin. Maureen Dowd is now writing columns in a language very few people can read! (Unfortunately, I support myself by being able to read Latin.) Overall, though, a definite step forward.

The bad news: It's her usual tripe.

But - the column is actually a tiny bit amusing, in a strange way. I especially like the phrase "Barracuda Borealis." :-)

re: #4 MandyManners

He was coming from a nightclub? Why won't they release is BAC?

I speculated yesterday that alcohol was involved.

His BAC would have to be taken post-mortem, and the results are probably being held pending the final autopsy report.

If he were drinking, a proper autopsy should determine that (plus there might be eyewitness accounts to corroborate).

You might be surprised to see people's reactions when you talk about "Socialized medicine" and rationing of medical treatment. I get good results with taxes - the statistic that Obama can't cut 95% of taxes because only 60% *pay* taxes, the meme about how if he repeals the Bush tax cuts, he automatically raises taxes, and the fact that he'll raise a ton of other taxes, and it will trickle down to the consumer. Most of the people I talk to are looking for a reason to vote McCain, and are supporting Obama because of Bush, so they need actual arguments on bread-and-butter issues; experience and questionable associations just don't work.

I also get some results from pointing out how Obama in so many ways is just a liberal version of Bush - in 2000 we heard how inexperienced Bush would be OK as President, because he'd have great advisers, and now we hear how inexperienced Obama would be OK as President because of his "judgment." Do voters really want to be fooled twice?

The Democrats are NOT the party of the poor and downtrodden. The incessant political ads during the games were at least 5-1 Donk. They've apparently got mad cash to burn. And in turn, it would seem that those who call themselves Republicans in this country may talk a good game, but like to sit on their wallets.

I've tried ACORN; I've tried Ayers. I've tried, "If you think the government has done well in the current financial crisis, wait'll you see what they do with health care." I've tried Wright & Pfleger, Edward Said & Rashid Khalidi, the Obama Truth Squad, the Hamas Phone Bank. I've pointed out that Obama is willing to meet with Ahmedinejad with fewer preconditions than he imposed on John McCain.

I've pointed out that inexperience on the national stage, if that's your issue, is better at the bottom of the ticket than at the top; I've pointed out that Palin has more executive experience than the other 3 candidates combined. On New Yorkers, I've said, "If you had a choice between Leonora Fulani and Abe Beame as mayor, who would you vote for? If Beame, why are you voting for Fulani for President?"

I've pointed out Obama's reversal on Jerusalem after one day; his stock of anti-Israel advisors; his connections to Carter and to Cornel West.

Hopefully, some of it fell on fertile ground.

Ya I tried all that on 2 of my brothers and all I got back was "I hear the McCain wears woman's underwear"

re: #172 FrogMarch

Here's Powerline on Obama's leftism:

But there are at least six reasons to fear that Obama will govern from the far left.

First, it’s all he really knows. Obama grew up in a left-wing household, attended elite left-wing dominated universities, and spent the remainder of his formative years as a community organizer alongside the likes of Wright and Ayers.

Second, it’s how he votes. In 2007, according to the National Journal, Obama’s voting record was the most liberal of any senator.

Third, it’s what he falls back on. Obama is scripted to be “post-partisan.” But when off-script he’s liable to blurt out that those who resist the leftist agenda bitterly “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to those who aren’t like them.” And when his wife said that, as an adult, she has never been proud of America, Obama defended her statement as applied to American politics. This is “god damn America” lite.

Fourth, it’s what his base wants. There really isn’t much distance between Reverend Wright and Bill Ayers and the “General Betray-Us” crowd.

Fifth, it’s what he can pretend the times demand. When economic hardship causes people lose their faith in free markets, all kinds of radical mischief becomes possible.

Sixth, with the Democrats almost certain to have substantial majorities in both houses of Congress, who would constrain a President Obama?

Regarding McCain saying he's gonna whip Obama on Wednesday: that, to my mind, means he's going to wimp out.

In my experience, you whip someone, or you don't. If you're going to, you don't telegraph your punch; you don't build up expectations; you don't box yourself in by saying what you're "gonna" do. You do it, and sweep up the pieces later.

"I'm gonna" is the cry of the blowhard barroom drunk. The voter base has been hungry for a dish of whipped ass for weeks now, and it's been sitting on the pass-through, getting cold, while we wait for McCain to bring it to the table.

Bring it, John, or shut the hell up, bumble along, and watch while we drag you kicking and screaming across the Sadie Hawkins Day finish line.

He should really shut up until he's ready to deliver. Now, he's set the bar too high

re: #166 MandyManners

I talk about taxes and Ayers and ACORN and Soros.

First I pass around a copy (I carry a dozen with me!) of the wonderful list of Obama's Obfuscations* posted here by smart lizards, and add that we now have a Presidential candidate whose list of past anti-American associates would make it nearly impossible to get a security clearance for most Federal appointments, yet who may well gain entrance to none other than the Oval Office of the White House.

I remind them that they, personally, are voting to hire someone for the most important post in the nation, and the leader of the free world. Then, I ask why they would consider hiring someone with a totally empty, unsupported resume (piling up hundreds of 'Present' votes in the short time he actually served as a freshman Senator, before going straight on to his POTUS campaign). We don't know how Obama got into Harvard. We don't know how he managed to leapfrog over the heads of a dozen more qualified candidates with extensive legal publishing histories, when he was made President of Harvard Law Review. And we also don't know why he was offered a position as a tenured Professor at Chicago Law School.

Too many folks answer that at least Barry is 'Not Bush' or 'Not Republican', which can segue into Fannie/Freddie, Acorn, and the radical left economic policies which led us into the mortgage mess.

One of the best lines is a reply to the anti-Republican canard, "I'm not doing better than I was eight years ago." Remind them where the stock market and economy was before the Dems took power in Congress. Then ask them, "Are you better off than you were TWO years ago?"

re: #187 buzzsawmonkey

Regarding McCain saying he's gonna whip Obama on Wednesday: that, to my mind, means he's going to wimp out.

It brings to mind the rally before the 2nd debate when McCain was asked when he was going to take the gloves off, and he answered, "How about Tuesday night?". This of course set the attendees into a frenzy, as they (like the rest of us) have been hungry for Obama to get verbally eviscerated on national TV. But when it came down to it, McCain did take of his gloves, and had on another pair on underneath.

Senator McCain wants to run and "honorable" campaign, and that's all well and good, fine and dandy. But there's nothing honorable about doing a half-@$$ed job.

As for the original topic of this thread...uhm...don't drive faster than your guardian angels (in this case devils) can fly. But now that Haider is dead, he, Hitler and Saddam are looking for a fourth for bridge...I'm guessing it's a race between bin Laden and O.J. for the last seat.

223 nyc redneck  Sun, Oct 12, 2008 5:55:35pm

i had two dust ups this wk w/ close friends w/whom i had never really discussed politics.
afew days ago, the pres. debate came up in conversation w/ a black friend of mine. she began to really talk sarah down. i just said, "if you don't like sarah palin, you can't possible like me."
she stared at me, just speechless. i said, "i really admire sarah and of all the people running her ideas are most like mine."
well, my friend got hysterical and said she was leaving. i said, "no you're not leaving, we're going to have us a conversation." and we did.
i told her as a sm.business owner i'm going for the ticket that is going to be best for the economy. the party that is going to lower my taxes and stay out of my way. i said i want to be left alone from prying intrusive gov't. and i don't need a pres. to fix my soul."
she couldn't argue w/ any of that. we talked for an hour longer and it brought us closer. we were hugging and laughing when we said goodbye. she moved in my direction tho she will most likely still be voting obama. she is now thinking abt. all the negatives surrounding him most of which she didn't know abt. (wright, pflegar, ayers, fanny, freddy, odinga, hamas, soros, raines, farrakhan, the annenberg challenge, rezko, acorn etc.)
also she did admit that sarah can do so much more than any feminist we could name.
then today,i went round and round w/ another good friend. ( also an intellectual fruitcake but smart person) i told her the same thing, "you don't like sarah, you don't like me". she started w/ the book burnings and firing the trooper. i cancelled those allegations out and her source the nyt and the 14 bogus articles. and i emphasized the best choice is the party that will most stay out of our lives and keep our taxes low. and not try to fck w/ our souls ,
by the way, neither of these friends knew abt. obama's designs on our souls.
that bothered them the most.
so, politics was broached and i'm glad i spoke my mind w/ no yelling and hollering. it bothers me that politics is such a potentially explosive topic that
it is off limits btw people who really care abt. each other. i'm sick of that.

They generally get the picture really quickly. I don't know if I've changed a lot of minds, but I do know that I've gotten them thinking.

You can't say there was no warning about McCain. Bush wanted it more in 2000 and his surrogates played it the way they had to in order for him to win. McCain always had, as he has now, his wealthy wife's liquor distributorship money to fall back on, so his approach certainly isn't all or nothing. His ego appears to insist on a level of senatorial dignity to his campaign that seems above the standards of anyone that has run for President in the past two decades. People of the country be damned, I guess.

While I hope he wins despite his well-revealed flaws I am scared s#**less by the idea of someone with the views, naivety, and cult of personality of Obama running this country, especially during a depression. How long after Obama is elected will we see pictures of Barry in every American classroom, and hear students , after the pledge of allegiance, recite a poem for the "Dear Leaders" health and well-being? We will be entering some very dark days for American democracy, indeed.

Well, not exactly a swing state but only a 9% difference in the polls. As for your earlier inquiry regarding baby-boomers - I don't see much of a pattern by generation. Generally, there are more Republicans among older generations, but the baby-boomers have the original hippies -sixties generation - like Michael Ayers.
