Oh Brother. Way to go John.
McCain just stated that he'll "whip" Obama in the next debate. I hate this politically correct crap where you have to check every word for proper nuance and references. It makes it impossible to speak. Nobody can maintain perfect political correctness 100% of time.
Still, McCain needs stop torpedoing his own campaign. Sometimes I get the feeling that McCain is a tone-deaf geek running for the Presidency of another planet. He has failed, despite repeated warnings from his most ardent supporters, to demolish the Democrat lies that the economic crisis is the fault of Republicans. The window is closing, if it hasn't already closed, to do that. Now this.
Folks, I know we are all worried, but the stakes are higher than just a mere Democrat gaining office. We are looking at sea-change, a crossing of the Rubicon, in which the good people of Middle America lose their political voice, perhaps permanently. Democrats have bamboozled minorities with free money and populist promises that stick, and with the election of a black candidate, opposed not for his race, but for his Lefitsm, will nevertheless brand all who oppose his election as racist. The Republican party is the party of Lincoln, and Blacks voted overwhelmingly Republican until FDR. Today, the future of the Republican party itself is in doubt.
We are entering an era where the Multicural Left, distinctly different from the centrist liberalism of Clinton, will now prevail, and the cultural ramifications -- moral relativism, political correctness, ethnic division, class warfare, real statism, real pacifism, will take on a reality hitherto unheard-of. With the election of Obama, we are entering an era where the Left flirts with the quintessential Charismatic Leader that has led many a nation to ruin, even as it plants the label of fascism on middle America.. Today, Cockie Roberts said with unrestrained glee, "We are all socialists now." Really? Democrats precipitate an economic debacle by blocking all regulation of Fannie, then hang the albatross on the Republicans (who make no effort to remove it), and then jeer at Republicans for being pro-regulation hypocrites. This will be par for the course during the next eight, twenty, or more years.
I hope that Obama governs as a centrist, but I doubt he will. He is the candidate that the Left has for decades been praying for. With his election the dawn of radical shift in America begins.
Perhaps this all just gloomy talk, and perhaps, in the next 24 days, voters will get a clue and put McCain in office.

re: #939 Palandine
Obama OUGHT to be up 20 points: bad economy (which he never misses a chance to talk down), unpopular lame duck president from other party, an opponent that most Republicans didn't want in the first place, the media in the tank for him, and he's good looking and makes a good teleprompter speech. He should be DESTROYING McCain.
But he's not. He's within the margin of error, and given how skewed the polls are, it can be assumed McCain is actually ahead. The dems and the media chose...poorly...and are heading for epic fail.
The polls showing Mac losing big are utter bullshit.
Hell, AOL's straw poll has McCain up big!

[Link: www.sfgate.com...]
Firefighters from around Marin County and San Francisco are fighting a fire on the top of Angel Island.
"It is a very big fire," said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Amy Marrs.
She said the wind appears to be driving the fire on the island, which at 740 acres is the largest island in San Francisco Bay.
The fire, which was reported around 9 p.m. was about 200 feet by 200 feet at 9:30 p.m., according to a dispatcher at the Mill Valley Police Department who was fielding calls.
"It is just massive. You can see the orange flames from the bridge," Mark Crawford, an Orinda resident, said after driving across the Bay Bridge and seeing the fire.
The U.S. Coast Guard was transporting fire personnel out to the island, a dispatcher said.
The island's highest point is Mount Livermore at 781 feet high. The fire was burning on the east side of the island, near the reservoir.

Yeah. The polls showing Obama way up don't pan out mathmatically. He hasn't gained more support from his base; it has been relatively stead (actually gone down very slightly.) McCain's base hasn't really budged, and neither have independents.
These poll swings are artificial. For Obama to climb like he had been, his support had to come from somewhere, but he didn't gain in any areas.

Hell, AOL's straw poll has McCain up big!
Yeah, I'm trying to comfort myself with that thought, that the polls are bullshit. They were bullshit in 2004 and 2000. Also, Obama has $400M clams and Mac is still within striking distance. 24 days are an eternity.
But I've been gloomy all day. I just wish Mac would understand the gravity of this election and expose the Dems on the economy and Obama's associates more. This bipartisan stuff is bullshit. That era is long gone, sadly, and it doesn't help that there is one easily avoided tactical fuck-up after another.

So, here’s tonight’s story about how race is not injected into the presidential campaign by some. Tonight I went to visit my 92 year old Pop at his nursing home. He is not well, but his biggest problem is severe dementia. Most of the time he doesn’t have a clear thought in his head, but this evening he was fairly alert. As we sat in the parlor watching the TV news, he asked me when he saw Obama, “who is that man?” I told him the name, the particulars, and said Obama’s mother was a white lady and his father a black man. Pop, who sometimes uses expressions in German, said “Es macht nicht” (pronounced “es mox nix”). That translates to “it matters not”. Then Pop said Obama had big, funny ears. “So do you, Pop”, I said, and that’s true. But Pop, would not be outdone, and said, “but mine don’t stick out like that, and besides he has a weird name. And he also talks slick, like a used-car salesman or a politician who says nothing important”.
I said no more, but when I left Pop tonight, he said, “that expression can also mean, the hell with ‘em”. All in all it was an amusing but an enlightening evening.
Thanks for listening to Grandma and her demented Pop on this lovely fall Carolina evening, and have a nice day.

Some of very very earliest Dashiell Hammett detective stories, starring the "Continental Op," partly took place in 1920s Sausalito. Hammett (true to life) described it as a place where rumrunners and gangsters hid out, where the police had no authority, where every other building was a bordello or a smuggling depot, and where gunbattles between crooks raged on the waterfront.

All this talk about polls got me thinking, and my husband just reminded me of something.
If any of y'all haven't checked it out, look at some of Wizbang's work on the polls. Re-indexing many of them by 2006 numbers shows McCain a whole lot closer than even "friendly" polls like Rasmussen. So why the discrepancy?
Of course, there is the factor of ACORN registering a lot of "ghost voters" who are factored in by professional pollsters when weighting polls, but who don't show up on Election Day. But my husband also reminded me: A lot of pollsters by the conventions of the industry have to factor in the numbers from the primary when doing their weighting. Democrat attendance in the primaries in 2008 set records. By the conventions of the polling industry, this has to translate into record voting numbers by Democrats, and the polls are weighted accordingly.
But we all recall the primaries. For the Republicans, it was mostly decided before Texas. The Dems duked it out to the bitter end, egged on by the operatives of Operation Chaos. I think this lured what I call "double dips" to the primaries---people who normally vote for Democrats in the general election but skip primaries. Because they didn't skip this primary, they are weighed as a gain in Democrat votes. But Democrats can't gain what they already had. So essentially, these guys are counted twice when calculating the percentage of projected Democrat voters.
In order to maintain consistency in polling, polling orgs have to follow certain conventions when gathering, sorting, and weighting data. This is a matter of weighting apples. You can't just throw an orange in the mix by tossing out 2008 primary data and weighting your numbers with a more "normal" year like 2000, 2004, or 2006. The pollsters who do internal polling for candidates are not so restricted. This is why I think it is more helpful to watch how the campaigns are behaving than watching the professional polls. From what I am seeing, McCain's numbers are better than we think IMHO.

Patri Friedman -- Milton Friedman's grandson.
And last week, Thiel announced a $500,000 investment—the same amount he put into Facebook in June 2004—in the Seasteading Institute. Seasteading, or "homesteading on the high seas," is an idea that has long attracted libertarians and others who would like to see a little more competition between forms of government. The idea is to get out into international waters and set up a floating outpost (or 12, or 1,200) from which people can come and go, experimenting with different types of legal, social, and contractual arrangements.
Thiel's co-conspirator and resident big thinker is none other than the impeccably credentialed Patri Friedman, son of David "Machinery of Freedom" Friedman, grandson of Milton "Capitalism and Freedom" Friedman. Patri, 31, has been beating the drums for various floating autonomous entities for several years, whenever he can steal time from his work as a software engineer at Google and from his now 2-year-old son, Tovar.

When Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala first sailed into San Francisco Bay and named all the islands, he named one of them Alcatraz. Yerba Buena...
Switched 1915 by the Army?
Very good! Yerba Buena is correct! But the second half of the answer -- incorrect. The real answer: In 1826, A British ship sailed into San Francisco Bay, and was using Ayala's charts, but the Queen's Surveyor on board got all confused, and so when he made his own map of the Bay, he accidentally wrote the wrong name on the wrong island. That incorrect 1826 British map was then later used by subsequent mapmakers to name the islands, and by the time the mistake was noticed, it was far too late -- all the maps had repeated the error. So the Americans just decided to stick with the new names rather than try to fix every map in the world.

So the Americans just decided to stick with the new names rather than try to fix every map in the world.
wow. ;-)>

This is pretty good article on comparing the things "that ones" campaign vs McCains and how McCains has ended up being called the bad guy.
"Jumping Ship...
Moreover, so far, McCain supporters have not broken into Biden's email, or accused Biden of being a Nazi, or accused anyone of not bearing one of their own children, or photo-shopped grotesque pictures of Obama on the Internet (as in the Atlantic magazine case). I don't think deranged McCain supporters in Hollywood or television almost daily are quoted as damning Obama in unusually crude terms. Nor are white racist ministers calling McCain a 'messiah' or McCain operatives fraudulently swarming voter registration centers. And on and on.
..........
Obama, as I have said ad nauseam, has brilliantly prepped the battlefield to such a degree that a Farrakhan endorsement or surrogates calling Palin a quasi-Nazi or a bimbo, or smearing McCain as near senile is irrelevant; yet one screamer in a crowd of tens of thousands is proof of McCain's and Palin's racism and hatred.........
Yet for a self-acclaimed conservative to vote Obama would mean that higher taxes, larger government, more entitlements, more of a UN-centered foreign policy, dialogue with an Iran, less coal, oil, and nuclear energy production at home, more "oppression" studies and "reparations", leftish Supreme Court judges, open borders (I could go on) were the truly conservative positions, or perhaps suddenly truly the 'right' positions. And as far as ethics go, in fact, a cursory review of the past Obama campaigns would reveal a ruthlessness never seen in any of McCain's efforts. Obama's record is far more left than McCain's is far right. Obama the healer has proven to be the most partisan in the Senate, McCain one of the most bipartisan."

Right now Afghanistan is actually suffuse with American money. Their economy and infrastructure isn't capable of actually absorbing it though. They have the money but no way of spending it.
This is a problem in Iraq, in Sadr City and elsewhere to some degree. If there is a problem spending money restoring infrastructure in Iraq, finding a way to spend it just to develop it has got to be a nightmare in Afghanistan.
Not to mention the disparity between the overall education and insularity between those two peoples. Iraq is home to one of the world's earliest civilizations and in terms of modernity, is worlds away from Afghanistan, which has pretty much always been a backwater.

I gotta say this before the 4th...
To think Senator McCain is *really* playing this wussy Jimmy Carter act right now, I believe is pure nonsense. This is calculated. I do not hold as much mystic reverence towards Rove as I do know full well that Cheney is a lifetime powerhouse of inside politics... and I use the word powerhouse because that is the strongest word I can come up with at the moment. Have you noticed that Cheney has barely said "boo" in the last year? The man has built probably the most effective inside political DC machine that we will never know about. For him to remain as silent as he is means only one thing - everything is right on track. This election is between two factions - The left and their raw agitated people power and Cheney and whatever he has cooking behind the scenes.
I will never understand why even most brainy people deal in what the newsmedia tells us to deal in. I know most of us are here as LGFers solely because the posted articles are mostly outside of, or at the very least ahead of, the MSM. I have spent the last five elections looking elsewhere for actions, reactions, events, non-events and pretty much anything that is an anomaly. Let me tell you that almost every election has a "tell"... which much to my chagrin, I only ever really figure out much later than election day.
On another downside, I cannot explain Murdoch's constant Obama fluffing, nor can I explain why the right simply does not go nuclear with the three dozen different available avenues of ripping the corrupt left a collective new one on the f'ing blatant treasonous acts they get away with every election.
If Obama does win, I will be consumed with the notion that he won because the higher-up GOP wanted him to win for scorched-earth 2012 GOP takeover.

UPDATE 1-Iran's government fails to end bazaar tax protest
TEHRAN, Oct 12 (Reuters) - A week-long strike against a new value added tax appeared to be spreading in Tehran's bazaar on Sunday, even though the Iranian government suspended the measure for two months, witnesses said.[Ahmadinejad] ordered a two-month suspension on Friday of the scheme to introduce a three percent VAT rate, following days of protests by shop-owners in bazaars in Iranian cities including Tehran. The tax forms part of wider reforms planned by the government.

Seriously, kinetics are only half the battle. With the NYT saying we kill more civi's than we actually do, its a propaganda war.
Our military is the most particular for civilian casualties than any other military in the history of earf. The NYT does not give a F, I can tell U as an operator, it is 4 real.

from [Link: www.yorktownsailor.com:...]
One sunny day in 2009, an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue , where he’d been sitting on a park bench.
He spoke to the Marine standing guard and said, “I would like to go in and meet with President Barack Obama.”
The Marine replied, “Sir, Mr. Obama is not President and doesn”t reside here.”
The old man said, “Okay,” and walked away. The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, “I would like to go in and meet with President Barack Obama.”
The Marine again told the man, “Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Obama is not President and doesn’t reside here.” The man thanked him and again walked away.
The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same Marine, saying “I would like to go in and meet with President Barack Obama.”
The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, “Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Obama. I’ve told you already several times that Mr. Obama is not the President and doesn’t reside here.Don”t you understand?”
The old man answered, “Oh, I understand you fine.I just love hearing your answer!”
The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, “See you tomorrow.”

Opera became too slow for general use and a couple of my sites are only viewable in IE. Tried FF and liked it. Still use Opera as my e-mail portal. McCain really shouldn't have said that, but it's another one of those things that people will forget about in short order, no matter how much the MSM wails about it. Nobody who could honestly believe McCain is racist is ever going to vote for him anyway.
What I don't like is McCain constantly telegraphing his punches, as well as setting expectations and then not meeting them. He shouldn't say he's going to hammer Obama, he should just do it. And if he does say it, he needs to deliver.

Hang in there! I'm glad you have something to look forward to.
That's an aspect about teaching I'd bet most people don't consider. Yes, we can quit in the middle of the year, but we have to give 30 days' notice or risk losing our license. It's next to impossible to find another teaching job at that time, and it's harder to get another position if we've just resigned. The only real option--other than a career change--is to tough it out.

Absolutely! The only money gubmint has, is what they extract from those who produce, at confiscatory rates.
You know, you would think that one day, this country would realize all the trillions of $'s they have wasted on various programs. Trillions spent on the war on poverty. Have we won it yet? No. Will we at this clip? No.
Time to teach the people, how to be successful at life. Take responsibility for yourself. Plan ahead. Stop buying unnecessary items, and save your money, etc.
Instead, they give money away from those who produce to those who don't. Can't they see that just giving everything to them, doesn't motivate them to succeed on their own? A very small percentage maybe.
It's all so clear to me now.

Who knows what he should do? Every new thing he tries is instantly subverted by the media as the wrong thing to say or a non-issue. If he brings up Jeremiah Wright, will he be painted as a racist bigot? Probably I know the man must be imminently frustrated by now that nothing is connecting, thanks in most part to the MSM and somewhat to incompetence on the part of his staff.
I called Newsweek last night and told them not to send any more of my subscribtions, that I could not take it anymore. Before I hung up, I told her that if she saw Jon Meacham walking around the building to take my last few issues and shove them up his ass for me. She laughed.

On the surface the answer would certainly be McCain. However, he is no true conservative and this whole idea of the government buying up bad mortgages really bothers me. That being said I will still be voting for McCain because the alternative is definitely far worse.
In my opinion, that is not what the question is about. It's about security in the sense that which candidate will keep us safe both here and abroad. And, which candidate will ensure such things as the First and Second Amendments.

At a McCain rally the other day there was a volunteer in a campaign shirt who got on the Mike and called Obama an "Arab". McCain has been sensitized over the last week by the new line of media attack calling his and Palin's rallies filled with hated and violence. McCain took the mike from her and responded that Obama “is a decent family man.
This was exactly the red meat the media has been looking for to advance their meme that McCain/Palin supporters are racists and violent. The media descended on this 75-year-old small town grandmother and manipulated some more sugar out of her. It was not hard. Here is the exchange at HuffPo. Note especially how the media acts in consort without even needing any coordination. They can see in an instant what they're got in this woman, and they just know what to do, that they have stumbled on a tool to press exactly the meme du jour.
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]
Here is the media running with the ball:
[Link: news.google.com...]
So far there is no AP involvement. However, this is a good example of how the media sets the agenda and then presses it.
Obviously, this advances the meme that unless you vote for Obama you're a racist. Further, it acts to truncheon the alarming spirit that has marked Palin rallies especially. Clearly, the media wishes to get the McCain campaign itself to dampen that spirit by turning the public to the suggestion that the spirit is akin to a dangerous mob mentality...and racist.

I understand that, Mandy. And you are correct about that. There is no question that in terms of national security McCain is the obvious candidate. I only meant that this mortgage thing is one huge step toward socialism and it comes from the Republican candidate. That concerns me greatly; more, in fact, then the socialistic dreams of Obama because the Republicans are suppose to be the people keeping that from happening. Now it looks more like they are just trying to slow it down a little.

Anybody know why "tenured" even became an idea?
Tenure cuts both ways. I can figuratively and (sometimes literally) give the dull, docile, brutish masses of the lefty faculty herd the finger and there isn't a damn thing they can do about it.
Remember the uproar right after 9-11 when a left conformist dolt at the University of New Mexico declared that anyone who bombed the Pentagon would get his vote? There were the usual denunciations and, like flies on carrion, these were immediately followed by various faculty statements and resolutions supporting the dolt's right to say stupid stuff in public. One such resolution was proposed here at my little campus. I spoke against it: "Ok, whoever brings me this bastard's head, in a bag, on my desk, by this time tomorrow morning; will get my vote." There were scandalized mutterings and I innocently asked what the difference might be. Nobody knew. The resolution did pass, but not by much.

Nothing about this economic situation is good, but on the whole I tend to trust the free market. Only when companies are encouraged by the government to dole out these ridiculous loans did a problem occur. Don't get me wrong, I know that the system isn't perfect, but it is much better when the gov't stays out of it. I am no economist (and I don't play one on TV) so I could very well be completely wrong about all of this, but I don't like the slippery slope toward socialism that we are on right now, that's all.

Exactly. But that happened because of the bad loans that those companies were encouraged to give. Generally speaking a company working on its own self interest isn't going to give out a bad loan like that. Only when the gov't steps in and tells them to are they going to do something that ordinarrily they would know better than to do. I think we can probably agree that the government rarely does things better than the public sector, and this is a big part of the public sector's business that McCain is suggesting that Washington get directly involved with. Again, I will vote for McCain, I am just not all that happy with certain aspects of his proposals.

You aren't wrong. Logic, and the free market, would dictate that if I wanted to walk into a bank with no credit history, no pre-existing bank accounts, no address and walk out with enough money to put down for a house, I'd probably want to bring a mask, a gun and a few accomplices to get it done. With normal regulations being circumvented people were getting loans thrown at them, and when they weren't they could always get ACORN lawyers like Barack Obama to strong arm the banks into giving them anyway. No get away driver needed.

Good orning folks.
Things are shaping up for (hopefully) a positive day in the market.
The DOW futures were up about 400 points over night, the Asia markets are up, I hear from my broker friends that just about all the cleaning up of margin accounts was done last week, and there is a general feeling that the bottom was reached last Friday.
LIBOR also eased slightly overnight so there is a lot of positive news out there to move the market into positive territory. After 8 straight days of large drops, it would be about time.

Exactly. My wife and I were in the house market a couple of years ago (we decided to wait) and were pre-approved for about 100 grand more than we could ever have afforded. We at least were aware of that and didn't even consider using all of that. Too many people have not used that same common sense and now find themselves in deep sh*t. Should we be bailing them out? I don't really think so. It might hurt us for a while, but not for nearly as long as it will hurt if we get into a situation where Washington is the biggest mortgage holder in the country.

Hong Kong stocks flare up to jump over 10%
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Hong Kong stocks shot sharply higher in afternoon trading Monday, recouping some of the steep losses from the previous week amid efforts by governments around the world to find a solution to the global financial crisis.
The Hang Seng Index surged 1,515.29 points, or 10.2%, to end at 16,312.16, after losing more than 16% in the previous week. The index is still down 41.4% in 2008.
A lot of that was probably speculators covering short positions, but still it's good news anyway.

Now that the ban on short selling has expired, the traders' hands are untied. They are set to show us what they've got. And what they're got is the juice to oil the economy. There are a lot of bargains out there now, oil prices are low, and the markets are undervalued.
The only thing that can send us straight down again is if somebody convinces the president to try to "do something" again. If that happens, the traders will yet again not know what anything is worth. Or, if Nancy Pelosi or Reid reconvenes Congress to try to "do something." If Reid and Pelosi try to muck with the economy between now and election day it will be for one purpose -- to send the economy down, down, down.
Enjoy it while it lasts...

Fox News can bash away. Along with Rush, Laura, Michelle, Ann and us can make legit claims against 'the one'. The problem is for all of our efforts we only reach 10 to 20 million people. The good thing is that so many are, or become, conservative minded as they gain responsibility. But, the thought of campaign promises come true.Or, the beliefs stoked by political emphasis on envy and injustise turns out many votes.

One thing about the election that could be key: the difference between registered voters and people who actually vote. Obama's key support comes from sectors of the population that don't vote, mainly the lefty youth and minorities. In some minority districts in Atlanta, for example, voter turn out rarely tops 5%; that's lots of folks who are registered and eligible who just don't show up. As for the much-vaunted "youth vote," previous election place the 18-25 vote at about 56%, as opposed to 75-80% turn out for the over-40 crowd. And within that cadre are the military votes which ain't going for Obama. The point is that the 18-25 left-radical vote is negligable; counting for probably no more than 3-4 percent. Obama's "lead," in other words (one still largely within the margin of error) may well evaporate totally based on the non-participation of a number of his key supporters.
Actually, the stronger he looks in the polls, the worse his chances -- apathy sets in among his key cadres.
Meanwhile, on the other other side, Republicans need to take heart and not adopt a defeatist attitude. As I've said all along, the media strategy is the Panhandle strategy -- do to the nation what they did to the voters in the Florida Panhandle back in 2000: convince conservatives that the election is lost so that they won't vote. Enough people stayed home in west Florida in 2000 to almost tilt Florida to Gore; had the media not announced Florida for Gore at 7:00 PM Eastern Time, the folks in the Central Time Zone would have gone out and voted -- and Bush would have picked up between 30,000 and 40,000 votes. That strategy is in play again, but is being applied to the whole country. Don't buy the hype.
Unless you're and Obamamama supporter, in which case buy it -- the election is yours! Stay home!

With the contraction in money supply due to the credit crisis, we will be lucky to not have deflation, let alone inflation.

Three-month dollar borrowing rate eases slightly
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The cost of borrowing U.S. dollars for three months eased Monday. The London interbank offered rate, or Libor, for three-month loans fell to 4.7525%, news reports said, from 4.81875% on Friday. There was no overnight dollar Libor fixing due to the U.S. Columbus Day holiday.
Still a long way to go in the LIBOR spread, but at least there was some movement back.

As you probably know short selling can be hazardous. If done in a fast up market it will actually accelerate the up-ward move - a short squeeze.
As the short seller realizes he is wrong he desperately tries to go long at any price. This can cause other short sellers to do the same as stock prices climb.

Yep -- spending at the margins should go up, which helps. Gas prices 'round here have dropped more than a dollar in the past week. Of course the short term supply crisis and end of summer have probably exaggerated the effect, but still people seem a lot more up-beat.

Very true, however after hyper-inflated prices (such as seen recently in the housing and energy markets) a moderate degree of deflation can return prices to a more reasonable level and generate a more consistent level of price stability. Or at least that is what I seem to get by reading Freedman.... (Not that I have read a great deal of Milton Freedman)...

While the idea of things become cheaper sounds good at first listen, deflation is actually quite bad.
When it becomes clear that money will have increased buying power in the short term (ie deflation), people don't want to spend it, and that chokes the economy.
Lower demand for goods and services drops prices further. . .causing the famous "deflationary spiral".

from liberal principles if it's best for the country, but Obama is a confrontational liberal who only wants to infuse America with the whole package of leftism for better or for worse.

Paul Krugman won the economics Nobel?
Who won the medicine Nobel, Dr. Mengele?
The citation said Mr. Krugman's approach is based on the premise that many goods and services can be produced at less cost in long series, a concept known as economies of scale. His research showed the effects of that on trade patterns and on the location of economic activity.
Sanyo figured that one out in 1987.

There was a recent case in CA, IIRC, where the votes "didn't matter" because the total number was too small to affect the outcome, so the public official in charge of getting them tallied just closed shop to save time and money.
But since this election is all about the O, I expect that at least properly-marked ballots will be counted.

Not fast enough. They're hoping to get OPEC to curb oil product to stabilize oil prices at around $80. Here's hoping that OPEC can't agree on a price hold... and the prices continue falling - giving the economy a huge breather in energy prices that have added to the woes of most taxpayers in the form of higher transportation, energy, and food costs.

In most elections absentee ballots are only counted if they would theoretically make a difference. This is different from the mail voting like Oregon does. Say the difference in votes is 2,000 and 1,500 ballots came in. Even if all were for candidate A instead of B it would make no difference. If Florida in 2000, when absentee ballots would have made a difference, the Dems spent a lot of time and money getting as many as possible disqualified, in the assumption that most were for Bush.

That's not exactly true. They don't count absentee ballots unless there are more ballots than the difference between the candidates.
For simplicity sake, if there are 10 votes for 1 guy, 6 votes for another guy and 5 absentee ballots, they count until the absentee ballot does not make a difference. So if the first absentee ballot is for the first candidate, 11, the next 4 can only add up to 10 if every one of them were for the other guy. So they won't bother counting them.

In just 10 years, Chavez has managed to reduce Venezuela's oil production by 25% with his nationalization of the oil companies and corruption.
Additionally, he's doing the U.S. a favor by keeping oil prices artificially low.....selling about half of his oil supply to his buddies for 30% of market value (the rest over 25 years) which lowers the world market price.
The U.S. is the only country paying full price for Venezuelan oil.

I am surprised the Nobel committee did not give Hugo the prize for economics. Maybe they are saving the "Peace Prize" for him?

Columbus made the voyage because of his misguided belief in the diameter of the earth. The greeks had a pretty good circumference for the earth of about 25,000 miles. IIRC Columbus though it was 18,000 miles. Given the far east was about 15,000 miles (give or take a few thousand) Columbus figured his ships (paid for by the Spanish Crown) could make it 3000 miles. Nobody thought they could get 10,000 miles. Eventually the ship technology would have progressed to the point of being able to make longer voyages or the northern routes the vikings took would have been re-explored, so eventually Europe would have made it to America but it may not have been the Spanish.

President ACORN or from a tiny ACORN grows a mighty stolen election.
When I was a young lad doing PR for large company, I was shown the ropes by my retiring predecessor. He walked me through the job, the people I would meet and what I might expect. He was a dear friend and one of the nicest people I ever met in my life.
The only people he told me never to talk to, never to speak to and never have anything to do with, was ACORN. As time passed, indeed ACORN did attack the company or otherwise make some outrageous demand against us. To say ACORN conducted themselves as factually challenged cretinous scum is to be to kind to the positions they advocated and reprehensible tactics they used. My friend's warnings about them were all too true. In all my business life, there have only been a handful of folks who I would describe this way. There were times when I met with people who were angry with my company (sometimes rightfully so), there were times when I had to defend my company not getting something right. With reasonable people, and I found almost everyone I ever met with reasonable, fixing the problem and making it right was almost always sufficient. Not with ACORN, with them, our existence was the problem; nothing we could say or do was ever acceptable or good enough for them. ACORN even had the chutzpah to ask the company for donations to support their efforts!
Clearly my experience was not unique. Their radicalism has never faded; they are the unflinching far leftists they always were. But what has only come clear to me in the last few days is that they have nominated a Presidential candidate this year. What is most disturbing is learning just how close the relationship between Obama and has been over the years to this very day. ACORN's efforts at the grass roots has been fundamental to getting Obama to where he is. Case in point: the Texas primaries and caucuses. They clearly stolen from Clinton for Obama. Texas Democratic Party rules state that to be eligible to vote in the caucus, you had to show proof you voted in the primary. ACORN dispensed with such silly trivialities as rules and sent hordes to overwhelm the caucuses with people who had not voted. They steamrolled into the caucuses and used the fact the caucuses awarded 2/3 of the delegates to Obama to end Clinton's candidacy; even though 2/3 of the Texas primary ballots cast were for Clinton (so how could the caucuses have such a diametrically different result?). When you steal an election from Bill and Hil, that is really saying something! Throughout his campaign BHO has spent millions backing the group's efforts on his behalf.
As little as ten years ago, Barry Obama led ACORN education sessions on power- put it this way, Obama was trusted enough by the most scurrilous political organization in America to teach what is their "holiest" subject: educating the masses on the need for mass struggle and justifying to the groups members the use any tactics, however immoral or illegal towards that end. Since those in power are evil for having it or got it from past injustices, any method to take power from them is OK. ACORN treats the sacred ballot box as their toilet because they have been educated that our democracy will not otherwise cede power. They intentionally create as much chaos as possible at the polls to further these ends. This reasoning makes it OK to tamper with the fundamental building block of our society.
The long deep connections between ACORN and Obama should include this most damning statement: Barack Obama is a partner and intellectual leader of one of the most dishonest organizations in American politics. He is either the piano player in the whorehouse that is ACORN or he is its procurer-in-chief but either way his involvement in ACORN should remove him from all consideration of being commander-in-chief.
We are extremely close to electing a man who is connected to them at the hip and the brain as President of the United States. America you do not want ACORN as your president.

I often have my doubts about factcheck. This is from their latest that says nothing about a Ramada Inn launch of Obama's career, and furthermore, it poo-poos Ayers terrorism -
Even the description of Ayers as a "terrorist" is a matter of interpretation. Setting off bombs can fairly be described as terrorism even when they are intended to cause only property damage, which is what Ayers has admitted doing in his youth. But for nearly three decades since, Ayers has lived the relatively quiet life of an educator. It would be correct to call him a "former terrorist," and an "unapologetic" one at that. But if McCain means the word "terrorist" to invoke images of 9/11, he's being misleading; Ayers is no Osama bin Laden now, and never was.
The emphasis is mine. Factcheck sucks in this case, and they are marginalizing Ayer's complicity in the bomb that was intended for Ft. Dix, but killed his girlfriend.
I'd say anyone who plans to set off a bomb on a military installation (Fort Dix) that was intended to kill and maim IS a terrorist.
I'd have to bet - if I were a betting man, that factcheck is in the tank for Obama.

I keep thinking the Obama complex can't get any worse, and it keeps getting worse. In the primaries he was a rock star, now he is a/the god of these folks.
Then I began to realize I wasn't the only one trying to buy a WWOD bracelet and spending my weekends scouring CNN.com. The rock star-type love for Obama wasn't just because he was pretty and in the media. Others too, had seen him as a shining light, heard that mythical voice boom out over the mountaintops; people were wearing the t-shirt because they would rather wear something representing a politician than a pop star. People everywhere, young and old, were caring again. So what's the problem here?
What exactly is it these people began caring about? And what do they want to change exactly.
