At 4 pm ET, the Dow index is up more than 900 points, for one of the biggest percentage gains in history. The question now is, will it stay there or will the yo-yo swing back down tomorrow?

Let's flip a coin.

2 Cognito  Mon, Oct 13, 2008 1:08:10pm

It will swing. The trick is to hop on at the bottom and off at the top. Or to tough it out until things get level.

It is a Holiday - factor that in. But, if it goes up further, we are off to the races and it is time to start buy'in.

The volatility in the markets reminds me of 2001.

As the conquering general advanced through Rome on his chariot for his Triumph the crowd shouted and flowers were strewn before him. A slave stood behind him holding a crown and whispering "This to shall pass."

Now I'm wondering if we're going to have the rate cut the Fed should make. I haz a sneaking suspicion things are still wobbly. People are buying with the same sense of emotion that they sold with, the past couple of weeks.

So many baby boomers have so much money they need to park somewhere that they, combined with the day trading gamblers will cause larger swings daily than we had before.
Computer trades kick in every AM and whenever a certain number is reached.
I'm going to try to roll with it and adjust to the idea of it.
1/3rd of all the stocks I ever bought I owned before the DOW hit 1,000.

New ceiling? That's the top of the market. That means prices aren't going to go above that price point. I happen to agree that prices are likely to stabilize around 10k.

I think you're thinking of a new floor above 10k, which means that there's sufficient support to keep the DJIA above 10k.

Part of the problem is that we're looking at different parts of the financial community - credit versus equity. The credit markets suck because of all the toxic paper, but many companies are in good shape- though they're going to feel squeezed because of a lack of credit to keep expanding or investing in new business ops, or purchasing retail for sales upcoming, etc.

We may be coming into a market that is more fairly valued; some good values out there, some still overpriced, and some fairly valued. I still think there's some shaking out to be had...

Actually the question I have is: Since they have been blaming "the worst economic down turn in history" on McCain (why not Bush) will they now credit McCain for the upturn!

BTW - I haven't seen this posted, but Charlie Gaspirino had a good write-up on the Obama Tax plan and how it may be contributing to the market's recent woes.

Here is a sample passage that struck me:

Some reckon that a President Obama won't go through with his plans. They look at his (thin) record and see a wimp who's never taken a firm stand on much of anything, much less enacting tax hikes during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

I look at Obama's record differently. From his days as a community activist, to his years in the Illinois Senate and now his brief time in the US Senate, he has shown little inclination to deviate from his party's tax-and-spend orthodoxy.

My question for you is...Is today's America really ten times wealthier than it was 30+ years ago? If so, why?

And isn't it surprising that we've managed to reach these lofty plateaus while handcuffed by 8 years of Reagan, 4 years of Bush 41, and 8 years of Bush 43. After all, these people are generally agreed to be amiable dunces at best, and worser that Hitler as well.

re: #61 lawhawk

There are way too many issues going on here. One day of historic gains means very little in setting a ceiling or floor. The volatility is just unbelievable. Last week the hedge funds were dropping shares like Obama does his friends, but one interesting question is who is driving this today?

While, governments around the world have been offering support both in deed and action, credit remains unbelievably tight. Once credit availability loosens up, we can speculate a bit further. Me thinks there are enough recessionary indicators to be wary even if the credit crunch abates. Whether it will be short/long lived is anybody's guess

LA County actually got off light last year, didnt they? I was down in SD for those fires. I think there were some others way up North, but I dont recall LA County having it that bad last year.

I was watching the KTLA coverage this morning while getting ready for work. It has a good chance of being just as bad as what we had down in San Diego last year and in '03. The Santa Ana condition is not expected to break until late Wed. and until then it will drive those fires with a near unstoppable force during the day.

Note: A Santa Ana condition is an extremely dry weather condition, with humidity generally in single digits. It is also notable for high winds blowing from the desert to the ocean, a reverse of the usual coastal condition in Southern California. IIRC, it is officially a Santa Ana when the coastal temps are higher than the inland temps. It is typically caused by a high pressure system setting up over the Great Basin area (NV and UT).

Someone asked about this before but I can't find the flyers the Obama campaign sent out but here is his plans for Bush, et al. if he is elected. I would say Bush/Cheney better get busy.

***

Here's his answer, in its entirety:

What I would want to do is to have my Justice Department and my Attorney General immediately review the information that's already there and to find out are there inquiries that need to be pursued. I can't prejudge that because we don't have access to all the material right now. I think that you are right, if crimes have been committed, they should be investigated. You're also right that I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of Republicans as a partisan witch hunt because I think we've got too many problems we've got to solve.

So this is an area where I would want to exercise judgment -- I would want to find out directly from my Attorney General -- having pursued, having looked at what's out there right now -- are there possibilities of genuine crimes as opposed to really bad policies. And I think it's important-- one of the things we've got to figure out in our political culture generally is distinguishing betyween really dumb policies and policies that rise to the level of criminal activity. You know, I often get questions about impeachment at town hall meetings and I've said that is not something I think would be fruitful to pursue because I think that impeachment is something that should be reserved for exceptional circumstances. Now, if I found out that there were high officials who knowingly, consciously broke existing laws, engaged in coverups of those crimes with knowledge forefront, then I think a basic principle of our Constitution is nobody above the law -- and I think that's roughly how I would look at it.

The bottom line is that: Obama sent a clear signal that -- unlike impeachment, which he's ruled out and which now seems a practical impossibility -- he is at the least open to the possibility of investigating potential high crimes in the Bush White House. To many, the information that waterboarding -- which the United States has considered torture and a violation of law in the past -- was openly planned out in the seat of American government is evidence enough to at least start asking some tough questions in January 2009.

From Sizzlak's WSJ link...

For the Obama Democrats, a tax cut is no longer letting you keep more of what you earn. In their lexicon, a tax cut includes tens of billions of dollars in government handouts that are disguised by the phrase "tax credit." Mr. Obama is proposing to create or expand no fewer than seven such credits for individuals:

- A $500 tax credit ($1,000 a couple) to "make work pay" that phases out at income of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 per couple.

- A $4,000 tax credit for college tuition.

- A 10% mortgage interest tax credit (on top of the existing mortgage interest deduction and other housing subsidies).

- A "savings" tax credit of 50% up to $1,000.

- An expansion of the earned-income tax credit that would allow single workers to receive as much as $555 a year, up from $175 now, and give these workers up to $1,110 if they are paying child support.

- A child care credit of 50% up to $6,000 of expenses a year.

- A "clean car" tax credit of up to $7,000 on the purchase of certain vehicles.

Here's the political catch. All but the clean car credit would be "refundable," which is Washington-speak for the fact that you can receive these checks even if you have no income-tax liability. In other words, they are an income transfer -- a federal check -- from taxpayers to nontaxpayers. Once upon a time we called this "welfare," or in George McGovern's 1972 campaign a "Demogrant." Mr. Obama's genius is to call it a tax cut.

I hope not. If it is, it will mean the market has come unhinged from the real economy. The conditions that sent us into this tailspin are still out there: All those hollowed-out mortgage-backed CDOs, etc.

Fake buoyance is not ideal.

With the EU and the US governments pumping billions...no, wait...TRILLIONS to recapitalize banks it's not a fake rally. It may not be long lived because I personally believe that we are only forestalling the inevitable and that some banks must be allowed to fail.

First, the government is suckered into spending unlimited money into propping up the usual suspects- builds confidence.
Second, the prices of many stocks suggest it is a good time to buy. Yes, they may go somewhat lower, but the real issue is whether the buyer is going to hold them for some time or flip them. Some big ticket investors have patience and realize the return five years from now.

More importantly, if you think the media is in the tank for Obama you better believe they are more in the tank for selling financial rebound and fiscal stability. They need advertising dollars and retailer ads, etc., or they tank.

The One: - "With the return of market stabilization, now we can once again focus on the plague of out times: Global Warming. I have a plan to lower the tempature of our oceans that begins with the free exercise of my will to do so - so it is written, so it shall be done..."

He obviously doesn't read the Old Farmer's Almanac.

Doug Hathaway, a solar physicist at NASA, believes that solar activity has diminished and will continue to do so for decades. In 2006, he predicted, based on observations of the slowing of the plasma flow on the Sun, that cycle 25 could be the quietest—thus, the coolest—in centuries. Also in that year, Khabibullo Abdusamatov, head of research for the Russian Academy of Sciences, issued an imminent mini-ice age warning based on expectations of a quieter Sun over the next 50 years. Our long-range forecasts also point toward cooling conditions.

These factors—the cooling Pacific, the yet-to-cool Atlantic, and the historical reduction in recent solar activity—suggest that a staggered cooling period could continue. Absent from most headlines about global warming is a discussion of measures suggesting that the warming has ceased and a cooling may have begun. For example, deep-ocean heat content has not increased during the past five years. Looking at just one year, from January 2007 to January 2008, we find that satellite-derived atmospheric temperatures indicate that Earth was about one degree Fahrenheit cooler at the beginning of 2008 than it was at the beginning of 2007. The United Kingdom's Hadley Centre ocean and land temperature records show cooling in the last seven to ten years.

During the past 100 years, while temperatures have risen and fallen and risen yet again, carbon dioxide has been on a steady climb (see graph)—and, for that, mankind does bear some responsibility. However, we would be wise to also consider the cycles and synchronicity of the Sun and oceans in any discussion of the causes of climate change.

Go read the whole thing.

DJIA, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all up over 11% today.

re: #185 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

I don't remember bringing up naked options!

Calendar spreads are where you go long an option at a certain strike price at one date, then short the option at the same strike price at a different date.

The "spread" is the time difference.

And the point is that options prices reflect volatility, and short term options are more responsive to volatility, with their prices going up faster than long term options.

So if you know what you are doing (and are correct in your assumptions), by shorting the near-term options against the long term options you can capture the increased valuation of the short term options volatility using the long term options as a sort of "control".

In a way, its a method of turning uncertainty into cash.

Yes.

Hating rich people is the only form of discrimination that is still legal. Any presumption of people being equal before the law ends if you start making money.

Actually, stupid people are still discriminated against. Ever wonder why the smart ones are the ones that go on to college? Don't the stupid ones need more learnin' ?

Obama's 95% Illusion
It depends on what the meaning of 'tax cut' is.

One of Barack Obama's most potent campaign claims is that he'll cut taxes for no less than 95% of "working families." He's even promising to cut taxes enough that the government's tax share of GDP will be no more than 18.2% -- which is lower than it is today.

t's a clever pitch, because it lets him pose as a middle-class tax cutter while disguising that he's also proposing one of the largest tax increases ever on the other 5%. But how does he conjure this miracle, especially since more than a third of all Americans already pay no income taxes at all? There are several sleights of hand, but the most creative is to redefine the meaning of "tax cut."

The Tax Foundation estimates that under the Obama plan 63 million Americans, or 44% of all tax filers, would have no income tax liability and most of those would get a check from the IRS each year. The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis estimates that by 2011, under the Obama plan, an additional 10 million filers would pay zero taxes while cashing checks from the IRS.

The total annual expenditures on refundable "tax credits" would rise over the next 10 years by $647 billion to $1.054 trillion, according to the Tax Policy Center. This means that the tax-credit welfare state would soon cost four times actual cash welfare. By redefining such income payments as "tax credits," the Obama campaign also redefines them away as a tax share of GDP. Presto, the federal tax burden looks much smaller than it really is. ...

And it goes on...

re: #130 CyanSnowHawk

To be specific: High Wind Warning

A HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 12 PM PDT TUESDAY.

STRONG NORTHEAST FLOW BEHIND AN UPPER LEVEL LOW OVER ARIZONA COMBINED WITH BUILDING SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE PLATEAU WILL BRING PERIODS OF MODERATE TO STRONG SANTA ANA WINDS AT TIMES THROUGH TUESDAY.

EXPECT NORTHEAST WINDS 35 TO 45 MPH WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS TO 70 MPH THROUGH AND BELOW PASSES AND CANYONS.

THE WINDS WILL MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT... ESPECIALLY FOR MOTORISTS WITH HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. WATCH FOR BROKEN TREE LIMBS AND DOWNED POWER LINES.

Kinda sounds like this guy perhaps?

Canute the politician

"Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings. For there is none worthy of the name but God, whom heaven, earth and sea obey".

So spoke King Canute the Great, the legend says, seated on his throne on the seashore, waves lapping round his feet. Canute had learned that his flattering courtiers claimed he was "So great, he could command the tides of the sea to go back". Now Canute was not only a religious man, but also a clever politician. He knew his limitations - even if his courtiers did not - so he had his throne carried to the seashore and sat on it as the tide came in, commanding the waves to advance no further. When they didn't, he had made his point that, though the deeds of kings might appear 'great' in the minds of men, they were as nothing in the face of God's power.

"Women are already serving in combat [in Iraq and Afghanistan] and the current policy should be updated to reflect realities on the ground," said Wendy Morigi, Mr. Obama's national security spokeswoman. "Barack Obama would consult with military commanders to review the constraints that remain."
According to his campaign, Mr. McCain supports the current Department of Defense restrictions on women in combat units, including armor, field artillery and special forces.

My issue with Obama is not whether or not I, personally will benefit (I would, greatly) but instead what is RIGHT and what is wrong.

Taxing is itself just wrong, but a necessary evil. Thus it must be kept to a minimum, and be just. Taking a different amount from someone just because they work hard and earn more money is not just. Furthermore, taxes at any percent higher than approximately 10% is no longer "minimum". Lastly, where does the Government get off deciding that if you make "X" then they have the right to steal money from you to give to people who make "X-"? If those without want more, they can do what the "rich" people did and work for it.

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but good poll news:

The highly accurate IBD/TIPP poll has started today with its daily tracking of likely voters. Just off the press: Obama 45; McCain 43; and 13 percent unsure. The poll of 825 likely voters has an error margin of +/- 3.5 percentage points. Also, McCain has a 48-41 lead among investors with 10 percent not sure. All this is good news for McCain.

Interesting:
How will your taxes change if Obama or McCain is elected in November?
I have no idea whether this is accurate.

Here is my results:
These numbers come directly from calculations by the independent, non-partisan Tax Policy Center. They estimate that your taxes in 2009 will change by -$2,934.40 under Barack Obama and -$2,945.41 under John McCain.

Woo-hoo, McCain cuts my taxs more!

What that calculator doesn't figure in is that a company like ABC Bread that bakes the sandwich bread you eat will be hit by a tax INCREASE to offset your tax DECREASE. So, ABC will INCREASE the price of your sandwich bread to cover the tax INCREASE which will offset your DECREASE. Now multiply that price INCREASE by every item of food, clothing, hardware or any other merchandise you buy AND don't forget that government will pay higher prices to the same companies for the same reason and that will get passed on to you in the form of higher sales, property, school, user fees, etc. So, by my calculations, Obama's tax DECREASE is a nte INCREASE!

I actually began to think about my own comment and realized exactly what I said, might itself be "racial" as I automatically presumed that it had to do with his race. (which I take it is your statement)

But then I realized that I've never heard this discussion about any other candidate, and thus erased my appology and realized that I was probably right.

I'm not playing the Holier-Than-Thou card. I'm just stating that it probably shouldn't be said, or thought...let alone publicly displayed on a blog.

Isn't it a shame that people have to automatically parse any statement "just in case" there may be a racial tinge to it? Or may possibly offend someone.

I sure will be glad when everyone is secure enough with their own identities that offense will not be taken where none was intended

re: #336 WrathofG-d

I can remember back in the 50's the hissy fit my dad made when they passed an income tax hike from 5% to 7%.

357 pittrader1988  Mon, Oct 13, 2008 2:43:59pm

The problems persist. This is what's known as a dead cat bounce. There are still gigantic problems in the interbank credit market. Banks won't lend to each other. They need to use a clearing house to get in between, and mitigate the counter party risk that exists.

The CME has proposed a solution. It will work. The banks don't want it because CME will force them to allocate capital to trades that they used to do for free. They also don't want the sunshine that a clearing house will provide-with transparency and accountability. Bid Ask spreads will get tighter and it will be tougher to rip off their customers.

ICE has also proposed a solution.

I don't trust Paulson. He is a Goldman man first, and a Treasury Secy second. If I were Morgan Stanley, I would watch my back.

Congressman's $121,000 Payoff to Alleged Mistress

West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL), whose predecessor resigned in the wake of a sex scandal, agreed to a $121,000 payment to a former mistress who worked on his staff and was threatening to sue him, according to current and former members of his staff who have been briefed on the settlement, which involved Mahoney and his campaign committee.

The affair between Mahoney and Allen began, according to the current and former staffers, in 2006 when Mahoney was campaigning for Congress against Foley, promising "a world that is safer, more moral."

You mean socialism doesn't work? This American socialism is more incidious than Russian socialism however as its not equal. Its just going to continue to tax the "Rich", but when that level of wealth drops the definition of who is "rich" will drop. Thus it won't end. Its reverser feudalism (instead of the poor working for the rich, you have the rich working for the poor -- that won't last long).

re: #372 Soona'

Is it racist to wonder aloud whether a national discussion on reperrations will start on Nov. 5 if Obama wins?

Deaf ... get with the program ... that already started ...

re: #409 godfrey

So what's it looking like in the swing states these days?

I'm in Denver (Colorado being a swing state) and all you see is Obama stickers and signs along with Udall signs. Essentially you take the chance of getting your car damaged by the many Obamaites we have here. I presume the same is true in Boulder. The Obama campaign is also saturating the radio with advertising unlike McCain -- which I believe he should.

Once you leave the metro areas it's pretty much McCain country with practically no Obama signage.

RCP has Obama up by 4% average which well in between the error range.

The books he supposedly penned are equivalent to code. They were written to enhance his image and his support to those that he has "worked" for and with, but of course he cannot acknowledge on his resume.

How could anyone forget the Pacer?

"CSH" -

I don't, an attorney friend of mine had one, drove it once in a while. Overwide, underpowered, bad on gas, handled like a pig, and was like an inverted aquarium concentrating solar energy like a magnifying glass on the interior of the car and its passengers during the summer. Overall, it made the Gremlin look good in comparison. OH, and the high center "hump" in the interior - there is a story behind that too - seems AMC was anticipating the use of a Rotary/Wankel Engine sourced from GM for this car. The GM Engine program fell through - the "hump" remained, cutting down on passenger space. Who could forget the Pacer? It was the 2 wheel drive SUV of compact cars.

The same is true in Boulder. I live "east" of there, but within sight.

what's with the flag Obama has behind him? Now he has to have his own flag, too?!
What a dunce.

***That is the Ohio State flag.

For those who care about these things, this is the last triple witch before most mutual funds close their books for the year. Expect a lot of volatility. Tax loss season will be in full swing after friday. Most mutual funds do not to have their clients see the total value of their funds go down but yet be handed a bill for long and short term capital gains. Granted its hard to think of stuff that may have generated a capital gain, but its out there. If you sold it, you get hit with the gain. Capital gains tax is really a zero sum game and a tax on inflation. My house has increased in nominal value by over a factor of 10 since I bought it 30 years ago, but then again, so has the price of the nickel candy bar.

Expect lots of stupidity from 0bama. If you remove capital from people who invest it in America and give it to people who buy crap made in China, it is not in America's interest in the long run.

stocks will probably rally another day or two... it's great time to make a killing if you invested last week. i wouldn't wait too long before cashing out though... eventually the binge will end and the market will have a prolonged hangover when the realization hits that we're in a recession.

don't we all own crap from China? unfortunately, we don't really have much of a choice in that matter b/c it's been years since American business leaders invested in American manufacturing instead of off-shore operations.

Wall Street Adage: “Buy on weakness and sell on strength.”

[CDR Salamander posts]

Remember what Baron Rothschild said,
Baron Rothschild, an 18th century British nobleman and member of the Rothschild banking family, is credited with saying that "The time to buy is when there's blood in the streets."
(...or something like that ...)

He should know. Rothschild made a fortune buying in the panic that followed the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon. But that's not the whole story. The original quote is believed to be "Buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own."

Just be patient
