Spiegel Columnist: Sarah Palin is a Witless Racist

Opinion | Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 2:07:37 pm PDT

Article after article today denouncing Sarah Palin and John McCain, but especially Sarah Palin, for “injecting race” into the campaign.

By which they invariably mean: bringing up Barack Obama’s troubling long-term associations with hardcore radicals of one type or another.

Germany’s Spiegel Online gets into the act too with a venomous article by former TIME reporter Peter Ross Range: The Lone Ranger: Is Sarah Palin Playing with Fire?

In her witless way, Sarah Palin has re-injected race into the presidential campaign at just the time when it seemed to be sliding into insignificance. After all, you can hardly attach a racial narrative to the global financial crisis. Furthermore, polls have been suggesting a surprisingly high degree of acceptance by whites of a black in the White House.

Some commentators think “brownness” (immigrants) has replaced blackness as the new racial scarecrow in American politics. I think it is also true that as people have gotten used to Obama, they increasingly see not a black man, but a post-racial person (white and black, by birth) who calmly and coolly embodies the swirling ethnic mix that is modern America.

But Palin, with plenty of abetment from McCain, has gotten it going again with the theme that Obama “is not a man who sees America like you and I see America." She’s selling Obama not as the black, but as the other. This obviously can appeal to racial fears and antagonisms.

In her his witless way, Sarah Palin Barack 0bama has re-injected race misogyny into the presidential campaign at just the time when it seemed to be sliding into insignificance.

Because everyone knows the C-word is the height of civil discourse. Even Germans.

If Sarah Palin is a racist for bringing that up, then we're all racists. Does the nitwit not realize that she refers to Obama's view of America as a broken-down country long past its finest hour and not the great country it is?

(At least, that's how I take it.)

Ignoring the rude insult from a German journalist for a minute, the only people injecting race into this election are the leftists and socialists who are pushing a Marxist, terrorist-befriending empty suit as their choice for President of the United States.

First- don't go projecting your nazi issues onto America.

Second- it's not his race that's the problem, it's his stinking ideology.

If europe could get a handle on the significance of ideology over "the others", then perhaps they might start to realize what the root cause of their ills really are. It's not the immigrants in europe that's the problem. It's the stinking socialism, and God forbid America try to prevent that rotten, festering ill to take root here! Comment from the Spiegel forum
I was looking at a photo just now of JFK's corpse after he was assassinated, the morgue photo. What struck me immediately is that he was down south in Texas, and that down south they are forever threatening to "get their guns" and that southerners hate the Kennedy family. Suddenly, I was positive the whole thing was a neo-confederate conspiracy to keep Yankees out of white house.

This reminds me of Iraq in this sense. For years we were fed the narrative from the MSM that the war was unwinnable. All was loss and their is hopeless dispair. A "surge' had no chance of success. There were only a few honorable journalists telling the true story. Unfortunately, most folks bought into that narrative even though it was untrue.

The greatness of Obama, the 'meanness' of the republicans and the inevitability of Obama seems to be a similar MSM narrative. What gets reported - whether in Germany or in the Wapo - is a very slanted version of facts.

I'm a life-long Democrat living in New York City. I'm one of about six people nationwide to have voted for Walter Mondale. I've never voted for a Republican candidate for President.

Until this year.

I'm disgusted by cheerleading masquerading as journalism. When my friends in the media complain about job losses and declining audiences, I tell them the reason is looking back at them in the mirror.

I'm fed up by more interest being shown regarding Sarah Palin's garbage than the trash Obama associates with. Bill Ayers is listed in the Chicago phonebook, maybe when the 16 people the New York Times sent to Alaska to go through Palin's dumpsters get back, one can go knock on Ayers's door.

But none of that is anything new.

The thing that has changed my vote is the current economic crisis. This is too big and too important to leave in the hands of one party. I've always thought it best to have bipartisanship when things get hairy. Giving Obama a Democratic Congress (with a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate) doesn't seem to me to be the best way to achieve that.

Since there's no chance the GOP will retake either house of Congress, my best hope for divided government (and the enforced bipartisanship that it requires), is to vote for McCain.

BHObama does not see America the way most Americans—Black, White, Brown, Red, or Yellow—see America is not because of skin color. It is because:

So N lover. (just kidding) You hit the nail right on the head.

When McCain or most for that matter state that Obama doesn't see the world like we do....they are TELLING THE TRUTH. This is not because he is 1/2 black & 1/2 white but because he wants Socialism, to turn our backs on our Allies, hobnob with our enemies, kill G-d, "redistribute" your wealth, open the borders, and turn the U.S. (a Country created on rebuking Europe) into an European surrogate.

& this is EXACTLY 100% what the McCain campaign SHOULD have said.

Our "Mr. Tough" has become Mr. Wussy and is being tricked by red herrings.

But Palin, with plenty of abetment from McCain, has gotten it going again with the theme that Obama “is not a man who sees America like you and I see America." She’s selling Obama not as the black, but as the other. This obviously can appeal to racial fears and antagonisms.

Reading this comment as a racial statement says so much more about the journalist than it does about Gov Palin.

I see no other way to read it ~except~ as divergent viewpoints. I've tried parsing it every which way and just can't put it in a racial context.

The left is the one running on race. It came up in the primaries and they are quick to pull out the race card now. I do not care what color Obama is or is not, I do not like his policies. There are some on the right that do not like him because of his race, that is for certain. But, how many on the left are voting for Obama because he is black? What is the percentage of black voters that are casting for Obama because of his race? The left are the ones separating people by race, basing policies on race, using race to divide people, not the right.

One of the benefits of Ford having owned Jaguar was that they pushed all the Lucas parts out of the cars, and greatly improved their reliability. Of course now they're owned by Tata.

Somehow it is fitting that it is a German magazine printing a paean about the Messiah when one considers some of the policies Obama has openly and publically stated have strikingly close similarities to a lot of the policies as seen in Germany during the 1930's and '40's.

My opinion on why it was deleted -
I do not think that the gist of the post was why it was deleted, but it was the use of a word within the post without enough asteriks in it and since EDITING POSTS is not done, the only option was deletion.

Just my opinion.

Amazing how anybody can think that Barry is postracial and that he transcends race.... inspite of his having sat through 20 years of regular, vitriolic, racist and divisive sermons by Jeremiah Wright. I'm no shrink but my guess is that people who subscribe to that deeply flawed logic are possibly delusional and we seem to have a lot of them in our midst.

He sat there for the same reason he used Ayers and a springboard, and the same reason he ran for the Illinois legislature, and why he announced his candidacy for President after serving only briefly as a Senator.....it's all about ambition.

He knew Ayers was as scumbag, but it benefited him at the time. He sat there in that church and heard every word of hate spew forth, but it gave him the necessary street cred.

Watch out if you become a liability with Barry though. He apparently will toss anyone under that bus when they get in the way. The odd thing is that he gotten away with it for so long ....and why is that? He has used his race as a shield to deflect it...Criticize him, complain about him, point out the obvious and you are labeled a racist.

I find it funny when Europeans and Asians lecture us about our "racism". I have known many folks from across the pond and have found that some of the biggest bigots I have ever met hail from France and Germany--our supposedly "enlightened" allies. They have the balls to criticize us when their own social programs are discriminatory. And for Gunther here to accuse Palin of racism when she never mentions it is pure Orwellian double-speak. He essentially accuses her of speaking in code.

The most racist people I have known were met in the Northeastern US, were immigrants or children of immigrants in the US, or people I met overseas. If I tell any Eastern Europeans that I lived a couple of months with Romani (=Gypsies) their eyes get big and they get all flustered and don't know what to say.

Yes there are some racist Southern boys in Texas, but you have to go deep into the woods to find them these days. (Texas does have woods, US National Forest land, in fact. While Texas does have some desert, all those Texas scenes in the old western movies were shot in California.)

The most deadly betrayal of America, the betrayal that guarantees accelerating sabotage of this government of the people, by the people, for the people, is the collapse of honor, love of truth, rigor, objectivity and a sense of humility and duty, among journalists. Whether print, broadcast or new media--the wholesale surrender of these gatekeepers of information ensures that we the people are manipulated and led to wrong conclusions based on slander, bias, redaction and partisan activism in the press. Shame forever, to those who refuse to hold themselves accountable, who pridefully foist their own political preferences upon us, as censors and propagandists.
This betrayal of trust is the most bitter.

If there was a better plot and acting from the prequel trilogy I could consider over-looking the politicing of the naming. The over-all stories were so abysmal that the names are the best part of the travesty. The irony of Jar-Jar being so blatantly Step-n-Fetch'it was an unintentional hoot.

383 Noah's Arrrgh  Tue, Oct 14, 2008 3:20:17pm

Unfortunately, this is the usual nonsense that passes for analysis at Der Spiegel, as is amply documented at the indispensable Davids Medienkritik.

Here are some of the latest memes the German media are pushing:

Global Economic Crisis = America's Fault
How the Wall Street Bosses Gambled Away Billions and led our Financial System to Ruin
Americans Destined to be Losers

As the sites authors point out, the major issues the German Press obsesses about are:

1. Perceived American religiosity and/or prudishness.

2. Perceived American obsession with guns and violence.

3. The death penalty.

4. The perceived excess and superficiality of American capitalism and (non)culture (i.e. fat people, the super rich, SUVs, fast-food, M-TV/hip-hop culture, Hollywood, corporate scandals, buy-outs and "excessive" profits.)

5. Exaggeration of social inequality in the United States (i.e. amerikanische Verhaeltnisse, poor Americans are starving and freezing to death or at least struggling with 2-3 jobs and no health insurance while the rich live it up. Perception that America has no social safety net or a woefully inadequate social safety net.)

6. Racism in America

7. America as gluttonous world polluter.

8. Perceived American unilateralism/exceptionalism (i.e. Iraq, Kyoto, ICC, Guantanamo)

9. Perceived American "hurrah" patriotism or "hyper" patriotism (i.e. flag-waving).

10. Perceived American paranoia/overreaction about terror and obsession with security and the "war" on terror and the perceived willingness of Americans to sacrifice key civil liberties (the Patriot Act has become a favored target) and take extrajudicial actions involving torture, renditions, etc.

11. The perception that the Bush administration controls (or at least dominates) the media and can somehow intimidate or cow the media into following the party line. The perceived view that there is a lack of diversity of opinion in US media (because it is allegedly dominated by conservatives!) The perceived view that FoxNews, talk radio and blogs are the menacing conservative vanguard of what all US media are becoming or have already become. (i.e. US media are "gleichgeschaltet" or in lock-step with Bush and the neo-cons.)

12. Anything that casts a negative light on the US military (i.e. Abu Ghraib, trials of US troops, bombings or killings of civilians real or imagined).

13. Anything that casts a negative light on the Bush administration.

14. Iraq is a disaster-quagmire-catastrophe-debacle perhaps unparalleled in human history. Iraq = Vietnam = defeat and humiliation for America, the US military and Bush.

15. The perception of the US as an imperial hegemon out to expand its global power and military-industrial complex while using democracy as a convenient (yet false) excuse to do so. Oil = blood = Halliburton = war.

Someone remind me: Why do we still have troops in Germany? Isn't it high time we let them provide for their own security?

re: #351 willowone

Exactly! "Rich" and "poor" are relative terms. Thus, when the "Rich" of today are turned into the "Middle Class" (because they will no longer be rewarded for their hard work), the "Middle Class" of today, will become the Poor. At that point, our Socialist Supreme Leader will decide that since the "top 10%" are those making over $100,000, they are now the "Rich" with too much profit, and they will have their taxes raised again. This will continue till we are all waiting on bread lines for hours together in the United Socialist Republics of America!

About that dead thread OT

[Link: www.nypost.com...]

Jesse Jackson, last heard saying he wanted to cut Obama's "nuts" off has now taken to reclining in France and expound on what life will be like in the Obamanation. . .and hey, sounds like Israel and anyone who supports her are in for "change they cannot comprehend" in that Zionists will be shown the door. . .hmmmm

I have often wondered how my fellow Jews can, as a people, continue to breathe under the sand they bury their heads in about the Democratic party and the allowances and excuses they make for their brethern in the party. . .

Here in A shtetl ca- Left liberal political thought has demonized Israel in the face of terro bombings, lynchings of Jews, the machine gun deaths of children and their pregnant mother (they were "settlers") and all while swallowing wholesale the idea of "land for pieces. . .I mean peace.

Dennis Roth wrote about the years he worked on peace in the region, under Clinton, and there has been little if any evidence to support the existience of anyone on the Palestinian side that wants peace more than they want genocide for Jews and the destruction of Israel wholesale. . .and up to this point American presidents have been divided on the peace process, but not on whether or not Israel should exist. . .until now.

Adding up why an American Jew should NOT vote for Obama is not hard;

The less than 6 degrees of seperatation between Obama and those who call for Israel's destruction;

1. Obama ->Last month his Advisors meet with Hamas and Hiz b'Alla -> 2. Advisor alsos linked to CAIR ->3. linked to the Holy Land Foundation -> 4. Funded Hamas and Hiz b' Alla-> 5. These group commit acts aimed at genocide and are antisemitic to their core to destroy the Jewish state. . .

Look at that. . .1 degree left over. . .and Wright's link to NOI and Farrakhan and Hamas. . .not even needed!

There are NONE so blind as those who refuse to see. . .and I for one would rather enter into the next 4 years with my eyes open and breathing sand free air than go back to the Democratic party. . .

See, it is just so hard to imagine that this could be as momentous as 1933, similiar economic worries and the same old hate and even more politically correct to hate Jews. . .now Jews are included in the hate. . .and yet we, as a community, refuse to heed the words and give them zero credibility. . .and will for the most part STILL believe that all is well, on our way to pariahhood and who knows. . .

We are living in the American shtetl, our heads in the sand, and if we dared to ask "what if these people calling for our deaths are serious" what would we do? Many do not even care, and those of us who do are surrounded by those who have accepted the utter correctness of Jew, oh I mean Israel hating. . .those damn Zionists. . .fuck them and their shitty country (quote from a French diplomat)

Imagine if these statements about Jews were being made about ANY other group. . .would we call these statements hate speech. . .Yep. Would we vote them into office? Hell no. . .unless they speak of another Holocaust, or deny the most recent one. . or threaten to nuke Israel. . .they THEN we. collectivly as Jews are urged to "ignore them" or worse yet, SHOW RESTRAINT!

GOTTENYU!

Well, David, I live in the Northeast, I'm a child of immigrants, and both my parents were from Eastern Europe. So, it's a trifecta of sorts going on here.

The Ant and the Grasshopper. And the State”parable 16 from the Big Red Book of Obama

I dedicate this to Barney Frank.

IN a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
“Why not come and chat with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of toiling and moiling in that way?”
“I am helping to lay up food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and recommend you to do the same.”
“Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper; “we have got plenty of food at present.” But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food, and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer.
No worries, though, the grasshopper decided. For he was entitled to some of that corn, being hungry and all, and to deny him food was a moral failing on the part of the Ants, whose greed was so loathsome that it should be punished by those who respected social justice. So the grasshopper complained loudly to his leaders about this terrible inequity in food distribution.
Which is when the state — ever compassionate and wise — stepped in, confiscated ALL the food, and divided it out fairly and evenly among ALL of God’s creatures (save for the bits they kept for themselves, and for those who’d especially helped them to power, all of whom received extra rations for being the most equal of all), and not a soul went hungry that winter, though nearly all grew quite weak — a small price to pay for equality of outcome. And the greater good.

Actually the disabled were used in trials to fine tune the mass murder machines of the future concentration campe.

Germans as early as the 1920s were compelling doctors and midwives to surrender "imperfect" children they attended the births of or treated, to the "proper places"

They were gassed in trucks, given lethal injections, burned alive, and shot en masse. . .all of these methods were researched, and eventually the "shower" setting of the chambers was created to first maximize the kill ratios per run and also to remove the panic factor- fucking bastards the lot.

I missed it ... and I'm glad. I'm utterly frustrated and infuriated at Mac's campaigning. Where the heck are the Republican 527s in dicey states? Anyone see any ads?

Dems want to revisit the New Deal -- New Deal 2.0. I can't imagine anything worse. Take a peek at this, if you can stomach it: [Link: www.politico.com...]

*seethes* I think it was the New Deal section in my 8th grade history class that really made me a conservative (I had an excellent teacher).

I'm gonna go do something else for a little bit to calm down. BBIAB

I know you were pointing out the hypocrisy - I totally agree. But *not* stopping this nonsense keeps Obama's supporters raring to go, because they really do believe their guy is being wronged.

read this post and get back to us....

re: #426 ModernDayPrayer

There are many very interesting articles/studies about Europe's treatment of Israel, as a way to "wash their hands" of their own guilt over the Holocaust (IE: in short, if they can show that the Jews are Nazis too, then what they did wasn't so bad).

All of this might fit into the same paradigm.

re: #425 WrathofG-d

no, no, no.

I was actually wondering if there was any evidence. I was asking if you knew of any. I'm not accusing you, I'm asking you (or ANY OTHER Lizardoid with this actual information) for help finding it.

~Dang not being able to tell tone on the Computer harumph.

Oh, OK - was confused, sorry. No, there's no hard evidence that I know of. If the "Kill him" comment is real, it was probably directed at Ayers.

re: #409 hermeneutics

Funny you should ask - I got two pieces of mail today. One was from the NC Republican State Executive Committee. It was a vote by mail piece that said our second admendment rights are in danger and to vote Republican. The second was a piece from the RNC that said "It used to be easy to recognize patriotism" above a picture of the men raising the flag at Iwo Jima. Inside it goes on to say that Obama-Biden believe paying higher taxes is patriotic and gave some info on how their tax plan will raise taxes.

re: #383 Noah's Arrrgh

Someone remind me: Why do we still have troops in Germany? Isn't it high time we let them provide for their own security?

The Bundeswehr doesn't need any help in that department. After the drawdown collapse of the Red Army following the Soviet collapse in 1991-2, the Federal German Army is the biggest single military force on the continent, with a total strength in armored and mech infantry divisions approximately equal to that of the Wehrmacht in 1941 (pre- Barbarossa).

As for their opposition to the Patriot Act, I find it interesting in that its provisions are significantly weaker than those under which the German Border Guards and Federal Police operate. Among other things, they can technically detain a foreign national indefinitely on grounds of suspected illegal activity of any kind, not just terrorism (a provision originally intended to stem the flood of illegal drugs into Germany in the 1960s, enacted under Konrad Adenauer).

That said, I think the Patriot Act has been less than useful. Plus, I'm concerned about how it might be used if The One wins the election. It has always seemed to me to violate the principle of never asking for a set of power you wouldn't be comfortable with your political opponents having. Think of the PA as it might have been used by Bill Clinton and Janet Reno.

cheers
