Joe the Plumber: Obama is a 'Socialist'

Politics | Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 8:18:55 am PDT

Both candidates were doing their best last night to invoke “Joe the Plumber” as support for their tax proposals, but Joe himself doesn’t want anything to do with Barack Obama’s “incredibly wrong, socialist” views.

I am the latté-sipping, New York Times-reading, Volvo-driving, no-gun-owning, effete, politically correct, arrogant liberal. Who wants somebody like that?"

That was my first thought on seeing this. Joe had better get some body armor because the storm is coming his way. Clear up those old parking tickets. Got an ex? Late on a house payment? Had an unhappy client?

Nothing is too small a molehill for the press to use against him.

Good luck, Joe the Plumber. You've done more to expose Obama's Marxism than the RNC. Of course that's not saying much but ... good on ya, anyway. :D

Joe the Plumber is a card-carrying member of the "Contractor Class" working-class entrepreneurial white guys who don't benefit from the federal state and local government's racial spoils contracting system.

He's patriotic, and a quintissential Reagan, Bush, McCain voter, and Obama thinks he's "bitter" and "clings to his guns" He has little in common with the typical Moveon.org Internet liberal who drives a Prius. McCain would be wise to make Joe the Plumber his friend these last three weeks.

Obama makes the fundamental mistake of assuming people are just particle subsets of groups which all behave in a similar way, rather than individuals with free will.

85 lennysquiggy  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 8:37:30am

Joe seems like a great guy, but I think he is missing the point.

Under Obama's plan, Joe's business (if he buys the business) would be taxed more if the business makes over 250k in net profits. For the sake of argument, if Joe is successful enough to hire four other employees and each of them makes 50k in a year (5 x 50k = 250k), then his business would be taxed at a higher rate.

It seems like Joe was misled by Sawyer and he answered the question from the perspective of making 250k all by himself. Obama's plan will certainly hurt the sole proprietor making 250k, but it will absolutely kill the five employees of a small business each making 50k.

Or... am I totally off base on this?

They already are. Apparently, on one of the interviews after the debate, Joe said Obama tap-danced around his question like Sammy Davis Jr.

And now this -

Joe the Plumber, the star of tonight's debate, may have a very interesting connection to John McCain. In fact, Joe the Plumber (Joe Wurzelbacher) of Cincinnati, Ohio may be related to one Robert Wurzelbacher of Cincinnati, Ohio, who happens to be Charles Keating's son-in-law.

Now that's a huge insult to hard working plumbers.

Modern sanitation saves countless lives too.

Obama's economic policies affect everyone, including Obama girl (who didn't vote in the primary for her guy), and Joe the Plumber, and everyone else - regardless of whether they vote.

re: #85 lennysquiggy

I watched a video with the Obama/Plumber exchange more fleshed out. Obama specifically said 250k "revenue", that's not even talking profits yet.

104 brent  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 8:40:41am

Some of the problem with Obama's plan is that he's not being made to explain those little details... Is it 250 gross or net, your Holiness? What about those capital gains taxes you keep promising, does it matter that they don't exist in my world? Do you know what they are?

No, the people that should be asking the questions are too busy drooling over him. It's a freeking embarrassment.

Obama makes the fundamental mistake of assuming people are just particle subsets of groups which all behave in a similar way, rather than individuals with free will.

Ohio elections chief appeals court ruling

[Link: www.ohio.com...]

COLUMBUS: Ohio's top elections chief has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in a dispute over whether the state is required to do more to help counties verify voter eligibility, a spokesman for her office said Thursday.

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat, filed an appeal the high court late Wednesday, said spokesman Jeff Ortega ... Brunner has called the issue a veiled attempt at disenfranchising voters and said other checks exist to help determine eligibility.

What about MY RIGHT and the right of other Americans to a fair election, Ms. Brunner?

Hi, I'm Joe the Plumber. You've heard the candidates discuss me and how their plans would effect me. And you. I'm just a middle class guy like you working hard trying to make do.

It's my money so I've looked closely at the plans. Sen Obama will take away my hard earned money and, in his words, will "spread it" to others. Sen McCain wants to keep taxes low and reward hard work.

I know Sen McCain's record and I trust Sen McCain. If you're like me, just average middle class looking to survive in bad economic times, so should you.

He asked me why I am voting for McCain. . .I said that I was not sure who I was voting for . . .hedging

HE said, ok, this official conversation is over, NOW, how about you tell me something about McCain?

I waited. . .for the punchline. . .and well he was looking at me, and I said, like what and he asked me why I was even considering voting for him-

So I told him about my dad, and my democratic history, and how I was tired of the party discouraging me to think for myself. . .and that in the end, I think it will come down to who I would trust with my checkbook, after telling both of them how much I could/can afford, which one will listen to me and trust me about my own money. . .

He was very quiet for a minute, and the moonbat started in on "that racist blue collar plumber is a fucking c___" outside the office. . .

The look on his face was. . .well, it was like a lightbulb went on. . .I think he gets it, and he told me I would not be bothered anymore. He would pass on the content of our official conversation.

I think I just got him on for McCain. . .me and Joe

To be more specific about that chart, those earning between $30,000 and $50,000 AGI will see a huge rise; and the rise will be absolutely devastating if you're in Obama's sweet spot - $40k to $50k, where the increases will be largest.

Someone in that "sweet spot" will see marginal tax rise from 15% to 50%.

Redistribution of wealth indeed. I don't see how that helps the middle class no matter how much money Obama claims to be giving back in the form of tax cuts (and they're really refundable tax credits), which I'm assuming is how Obama can claim someone about to get hammered with those tax increases will see a tax cut..

Federal income tax? Bah, I pay a smaller percentage than I tip to an indifferent waiter.

But taxes as a whole, that's another story. Read, really read your electric bill and note the taxes. Check the taxes on the phone bill. Conversely, if there were no msm, Obama would be 10 points down in the polls. Without his liars and lies, he'd have no chance.

re: #255 Scion9

So, what exactly is this guy thinking that Obama is going to lower? Capital gains is going up, payroll is going up. He hasn't proposed that he is going to lower anything. His tax plan is on his website and it is all 'tax credit' based, meaning that those 40% that don't pay income taxes will be getting money back from the income taxes of those that did pay.

Who knows? He just made another statement saying that 8 years of tax cuts under Bush had led to our economic crisis. He's talking in circles. My response was "Obama wants to give 95% another tax cut plus write checks to those that don't pay tax".

I think I nailed him on his own argument.

...evidently, the abc gma msm bho (nothing capital about them) tankperson could not even remotely rheem Joe the Plumber and she wrenched hard! Follow her liberal logic; 1st, make the point that Joe the Plumber does not even make $250,000 or more a year anyway with the added implication that he should pay taxes, 2nd, if Joe did make that or more, what would be wrong with increasing his taxes by only 3% over the Clinton-era tax scale which of course is an instant tax increase over the Bush Tax Cut levels today (note how easily she slides into the 36% to 39% Tax percentages as if it was a foregone conclusion which = 'in the tank think'), 3rd, she becomes rattled because she has nothing that will shake Joe and he's firing back with the S-bomb (socialism) against bho which she cannot dispute as she goes blink, blink, blink (which is understandable because being in the msm I'm sure she has never heard such), 4th, the tanked-to-her-gills 'journalist' has been rendered dumb as the audience can faintly see on her face, 'hope and change' as her only leaky retort potentially.
Do you think she's for bho's tax-to-the-max proposals (after all his all-time mentor his father suggested that the rich in Kenya be taxed at 100% back in his Kenya Cabinet days)? Of course, she is because she is tanked-up-for-bo and in need of some serious between-the-ears scrubbing bubbles.

But this isn't about Joe's personal income. This is about a small business owner like Joe being taxed at a higher rate if his BUSINESS (not him) earns more than 250k. That is the core of Obama's socialist way of thinking and these things must be pointed out.

One of Obama's ads claims that he will "close corporate tax loopholes for corporations that export American jobs". Nobody has asked him "how do you create incentive to keep these jobs in the US: Higher taxes or lower taxes?"

Our (so-called) conservative representatives need to start repeating these common sense mantras:
*Corporate taxes are a business expense that gets passed to the consumer.
*The economy is global, we compete with other countries for business.
*The US has the 2nd highest corporate taxes in the world (online.wsj.com)

Democrats have successfully demagogued corporate tax breaks as "Republican gifts to their CEO buddies." This should be countered by packaging the tax platform (maybe also health care, etc) as "Keeping America Competitive" or "Keeping Jobs in America". Something that the average non-newsjunkie can instantly relate to.

It's like this, there are millions of small-minded leftists out there, many of them trying to come up with a clever, snarky counter-comment. Eventually a few such comments come out of the wood work, they catch on, and other small minded leftists pick up on it, and before you know it the filtering system has found a clever, snarky, small-minded comment to spread. Lost in all of the rhetoric is that rich people can make their income off-limits to the tax man. Example: Theresa Heinz-Kerry made $5.1M in 2003 and paid Federal taxes on only $2.3M to the tune of $627K.

The effective tax rate was only 12.3%.

When Obama cannot collect from the rich he will have to turn to the poor the same as Bill Clinton did in 1992.

One other open question: when we was the last time you were offered a job from a poor person?

Hell, yes.
And what happens to people in those income bands who don't qualify for any of Obama's tax creditswelfare? (No kids, not paying tuition, not able to afford a house...) Well, I guess they're just screwed.

How gracious of Obama to assure Joe that he "does not want to punish" him. Just what provision in the Constitution gives a president the authority to "punish"?

His assumption seems a follow-up on his assertion a while back that as presideent he will cancel acts of Congress that he considers unconstituional.

Has this lecturer on Constitutional Law had grasp at all of the principles of separation of powers and checks-and-balances that the writers of the document so wisely and effectively put into it? Or does he just intend to cancel the Constitution?

And on another point -- what is this thing he has about "punish"? Apparently it extends beyond a girl who errs being "punished" with a baby.

No. What happens under Obama's plan is the more you earn, the more the welfare gets taken away. It's a disincentive to work harder and make more: the marginal cost of earning more - whether it's being taxed or losing refundable credits - makes it unattractive.

318 solomonpanting  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 10:15:05am

"You see my house. I don't have a lot of bells and whistles in here, really. My truck's a couple of years old and I'm going to have it for the next 10 years, probably. So I don't see him (Obama) helping me out."

If Joe had shown up a few weeks earlier, it would be McCain in a walk.

Hey, I drive a Prius. Decided to stop driving the Pathfinder at 15 MPG for a car that gets 45 MPG. For me, it's all about saving money, not Mother Gaia, as I drive about 125 miles per day. It had some early mechanical glitch keeping the mileage about 35-38, but that got fixed and the MPG is only getting better. And it's a light green Prius too! With that said, I am thinking about getting a bumper sticker that reads "saving my money for jet-a fuel" or something like that so everyone on the road doesn't automatically assume I'm a typical Move0n.org internet liberal! What I see here is a potentially serious "The King is naked" moment (as in, from the story, The Emperor's New Clothes). Here's this seemingly innocent outsider just calling it like he sees it, and suddenly everybody else says, "Yeah - what the hell was I thinking?"

I want to know why only "Joe the P" gets to use the (apparently) dreaded "s-word"? Are McCain and Palin too polite to use Joe's "vulgarity"? Are they too tainted, themselves, in semi-socialist dealings to throw stones? Or do they figure the media would crush them for saying it?

Anyway, Joe is a national hero, in my book. He exposed Obama's socialism in a way no Republican apparently could have. At the same time, it seems obvious to people (at least to the Independent fence-sitters, who will decide this election) that "Joe the Plumber - not Barack Obama - is what America is supposed to be all about". I was also impressed at how Joe was completely un-star-struck when he talked to Obama - as any true American should be towards ANY candidate.

Will it grow from here, or fizzle away? Only time will tell!

340 Logic  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 11:35:51am

How I wish John McCain would say, "You can put lipstick on a socialist, but it's still going to tell you that it knows how to spend your money and live your life better than you do!"

341 Adina in Judea  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 11:39:31am

The Obambi revealed himself in a way that he never intended to do on Joe the Plumber's lawn the other day.

Obambi wants to take money from hard working people and give it to others (thus punishing those who work hard and rewarding those who don't.)

The S-word should be in McCain/Palin and RNC TV ads from now on!

Sincerely yours,

Adina the Plumber

P.S. Ok, I'm really a software engineer - but I love the way Joe told Diane Sawyer on camera that he was working to stop a water main break at a gas station yesterday so he wasn't available for interviews. Diane was visible taken with a guy who fixes water main breaks at gas stations when he isn't explaining Obama's socialist intentions on television.

Joe the plumber was more articulate and made more sense than Diane Sawyer.

That little interview conducted by Diane was designed to make Joe look like a dolt -- instead, he shocked her (and the viewing audience) by being far more informed and well-spoken than they could have imagined.

Way to stick it to 'em, Joe.

re: #223 jaunte

As soon as she got him to say he didn't want to be taxed at all, she could have spun him as a crank, and her manipulation of the interview question would not be part of the story. Good work Joe, not falling for it.

I've heard The One say he didn't WANT to pay taxes several different times including on O'Reilly's interview.

345 TalkinKamel  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 12:07:12pm

Not just Joe the Plumber: now the Obama campaign is going after McCain's wife. They're certainly acting as if they're scared, and latching onto anything. [Link: confederateyankee.mu.nu...]

How is Fox news unfair to the these days when it seems that even the "conservative" and hybrid lib/conservative talking heads there (Krauthammer, Brooks, et al) are fawning all over the (no) One?

Reference Rush's comments on his program earlier today - he seemed to be at a loss for words to describe Roger Ailes these days.

re: #327 Reluctant Democrat

Here we go.....The first salvo against Joe

I once wrote a letter in support of a candidate running against the incumbent democrat mayor.

One night about 10:30 PM two police officers showed up at my door looking rather sheepish. They told me that a 911 call was received “…from an old woman who claimed she was kidnapped and being held in a basement, and all she could find was an envelope with your return address on it …” I laughed at them and said “Come on officers, you’re just out here because that (campaign) sign in my yard has the ‘wrong’ name on it.” One said, “I’m sorry sir, we have to do this.” I told them to come on in; they were free to go anywhere in the house they wanted, but to make sure I went into my son’s room first or the dog in the room with him would bite them. They walked into the house, stopped, and said “Sorry again sir, have a nice night.” And turned around and left.

I was then thrown off of the city planning committee.

Minor stuff compared to what Joe will have to endure, but just an example that democrats play shi^^y at all levels of politics.

Welcome to Canada, Joe, where success is, of course, penalized. How could it not be - it's only fair.

Forgive me if this has already been touched on in earlier posts/threads. Early on in the debate last night, I noted that Obama said the following:

What I've said is I want to provide a tax cut for 95 percent of working Americans, 95 percent. If you make more -- if you make less than a quarter million dollars a year, then you will not see your income tax go up, your capital gains tax go up, your payroll tax. Not one dime.

And 95 percent of working families, 95 percent of you out there, will get a tax cut. In fact, independent studies have looked at our respective plans and have concluded that I provide three times the amount of tax relief to middle-class families than Sen. McCain does.

Now, the conversation I had with Joe the plumber, what I essentially said to him was, "Five years ago, when you were in a position to buy your business, you needed a tax cut then."

And what I want to do is to make sure that the plumber, the nurse, the firefighter, the teacher, the young entrepreneur who doesn't yet have money, I want to give them a tax break now. And that requires us to make some important choices.

The last point I'll make about small businesses. Not only do 98 percent of small businesses make less than $250,000, but I also want to give them additional tax breaks, because they are the drivers of the economy. They produce the most jobs.

McCain: You know, when Sen. Obama ended up his conversation with Joe the plumber -- we need to spread the wealth around. In other words, we're going to take Joe's money, give it to Sen. Obama, and let him spread the wealth around.

I want Joe the plumber to spread that wealth around. You told him you wanted to spread the wealth around.

The whole premise behind Sen. Obama's plans are class warfare, let's spread the wealth around. I want small businesses -- and by the way, the small businesses that we're talking about would receive an increase in their taxes right now.

Who -- why would you want to increase anybody's taxes right now? Why would you want to do that, anyone, anyone in America, when we have such a tough time, when these small business people, like Joe the plumber, are going to create jobs, unless you take that money from him and spread the wealth around.

I'm not going to...

Obama: OK. Can I...

McCain: We're not going to do that in my administration.

Obama: If I can answer the question. Number one, I want to cut taxes for 95 percent of Americans.

Now, I noted Obama made some contradictions about who will be getting a tax cut:

95% of working Americans
95% of working families, and
95% of Americans

My question is which is it? Americans? Working Americans? or Working families (including illegal aliens?)...

95% of Americans would be approx 285,000,000.
95% of working Americans would be a subset of the entire population
95% of working families would also be a subset of the entire population.

Does anyone have statistics on working Americans and working families? And has anyone picked up on this in the MSM?

BTW - Did anyone else find Diane Sawyer as visually irritating? Why the heck can't she look at the camera when she asks a question?

Yes I found her disgusting, a real Obama snarky hack.

Can't believe the Obomniacs are now questioning Joe's creentials as a plumber? Give me a break. This is priceless. These people have no shame. Obviously his statements can't be true, he's not a liscensed plumber, just some ingnorant plumber wanna-be. He's only one heartbeat away from being a real plumber. Socialism would be good for Joe. How dare he have such lofty goals.

Joe, if you're out there I want to buy you a beer! I hate socialists too!

That's weird considering we just re-elected a huge (minority but almost a majority) Conservative government (Thank God) and Thank you Stephen Harper! :-)

The Left hates average Americans.

If someone isn't a domestic terrorist (or in support of one), then one doesn't have the proper creds to be fully human in the Left's eyes. They see the rest of America as toothless with IQs in the double digits.

359 sarabeara  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 6:05:34pm

My favorite moment of the debate was when McC is talking about the plumber, then BHO chimes in about his benefactor Warren Buffet's willingness to pay more in taxes...and McC laughs "but we're talking about a plumber here..."

Small moment yet priceless illustration of the elitism of BHO, and the snobs I work with and must endure every single day.

LA times has a thread on Joe the Plumber on Comments Blog.

The comments are 99 percent elitist pricks who wouldn't know a pipe from their left ear, though they get better later in the thread.

Their idiocy bugged me, so I posted this. In case it never gets moderated into the thread, I'm posting it here too:

Most of these commenters obviously are clueless about the building trades. My ex is an electrician, and he was called such (or "Sparky") long before he became a journeyman or a master. When he passed apprenticeship and had his journeyman license he made close to $80,000 his first year. As a master, he made a good deal more, because as a master electrician, he could have his own business, work multiple contract jobs, hire apprentices and helpers, and expand.

Getting ahead - moving up in the trade - that's what Joe was talking about. Any tradesman worth his/her salt has this in mind. No one wants to be an apprentice forever. No one said it was easy either - and it takes years.

When we first met, my ex was an electrician's helper. It took him 10 years to get to journeyman and a couple more to move up to master. However, he had his eye on that master's license from the day he picked up his tools and ran wire on a job site.

365 Mostly Annoyed  Fri, Oct 17, 2008 3:08:55am

Actually the more I hear and read the more he looks like a communist. He wants to raise taxes to make them "fair".

That's one of the biggest problems with this worls, everyone wants everything to be "fair", just more fair for them. GET OVER IT! NOTHING IS EVER FAIR AND NEVER WILL BE. It just isn't possible.

Obama needs to read this, [Link: www.michaelcrichton.com...]

Fair doesn't mean squat if it kills the Golden Goose financial system. just ask all the democraps that insisted Fannie and Freddie were doing a wonderful job of getting low income folks into homes they couldn't afford.

re: #364 Lince

I love Joe the Plumber too. He's just your ordinary working guy trying to do better. But now the poor guy is getting creamed. I can't say that I'm surprised that they didn't waste anytime finding any "dirt" on him but it still just makes me so mad. So he's not a licensed plumber but a plumber's assistant. SO WHAT? Does he have to be licensed to own a plumbing business? NO! So he owes a bit of back taxes. Doesn't Charlie freaking Rangel owe a BUNCH of back taxes too? Where are the news stories about him? I can't say I'm really looking forward to getting my tax bill in the mail, and coming up with money to pay those taxes is gonna hurt so Joe owing back taxes just makes him more of an every guy in my humble opinion.
