Obama also wants to add payroll taxes to all income. So you can bump up the top Obama rate to 65%.

Under Obama's plan, Joe's business (if he buys the business) would be taxed more if the business makes over 250k in net profits. For the sake of argument, if Joe is successful enough to hire four other employees and each of them makes 50k in a year (5 x 50k = 250k), then his business would be taxed at a higher rate.

It seems like Joe was misled by Sawyer and he answered the question from the perspective of making 250k all by himself. Obama's plan will certainly hurt the sole proprietor making 250k, but it will absolutely kill the five employees of a small business each making 50k.

Or... am I totally off base on this?

I watched a video with the Obama/Plumber exchange more fleshed out. Obama specifically said 250k "revenue", that's not even talking profits yet.

Some of the problem with Obama's plan is that he's not being made to explain those little details... Is it 250 gross or net, your Holiness? What about those capital gains taxes you keep promising, does it matter that they don't exist in my world? Do you know what they are?

To be more specific about that chart, those earning between $30,000 and $50,000 AGI will see a huge rise; and the rise will be absolutely devastating if you're in Obama's sweet spot - $40k to $50k, where the increases will be largest.

Someone in that "sweet spot" will see marginal tax rise from 15% to 50%.

Redistribution of wealth indeed. I don't see how that helps the middle class no matter how much money Obama claims to be giving back in the form of tax cuts (and they're really refundable tax credits), which I'm assuming is how Obama can claim someone about to get hammered with those tax increases will see a tax cut..

They are totally oblivious and out of touch. Don't forget that they can afford to hire the best accountants who make their tax burden dwindle to a tiny percentage - all legal, natch.

Normal people have no choice but to pay through the nose - every single penny the government asks for.

Taxes? Which taxes?

Federal income tax? Bah, I pay a smaller percentage than I tip to an indifferent waiter.

But taxes as a whole, that's another story. Read, really read your electric bill and note the taxes. Check the taxes on the phone bill. Check the taxes on the gasoline you use, the taxes on your retail purchases, the taxes on your property. FICA, etc., etc., etc. Think your haircut isn't taxed? I'll guarantee you that the barber pays taxes and he's passing them on to you.

Maybe it's different in Jolly Old England, but I bet it's not.
