Jake Tapper's Casual Smear of the Day

Politics | Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 8:59:24 am PDT

Jake Tapper at ABC News says “conservative blogs were all atwitter” about that silly rumor that Michelle Obama called an African media organization and ranted about racism.

The conservative blogs are all atwitter about a bizarre interview allegedly with Michelle Obama on a Web site called “African Press International.”

No, Jake. Conservative blogs were not “all atwitter.” At LGF we said the story was bunk in no uncertain terms.

The idea that conservative blogs universally accepted this bogus report is a smear, par for the course for the incredibly biased mainstream media. Some blogs may have taken the story at face value, but most did not.

Reporting it this way is sloppy and dishonest, intended to portray the center right blogosphere as a monolithic group of lock-step morons, dumbly swallowing every rumor that comes out. And that description is much better applied to Daily Kos and Huffington Post and Andrew Sullivan.

UPDATE at 10/16/08 5:15:12 pm:

For the record, Jake Tapper emailed to say he didn’t intend to lump all conservative blogs together with his comment.

That comment really irritated me - it's so incredibly backward, when the lefty blogs are the ones who really do eat up every crappy hateful rumor that people circulate.

It doesn't make you smart, Jake. It makes you a tool.

15 pittrader1988  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 9:05:33am

There was a rumor running around Chicago-it was false. Here is the rumor and the facts:

RUMOR: Michelle Obama wanted her photo taken at the Women's Athletic Club. Last year, the club invited her to speak about an issue dear to her, and she declined saying, "I am not going to speak to a bunch of rich white women." So, the club recently denied her request.

FACT: Michelle may or may not have declined the invitation-but there was no racist comment associated with it. Second, the WAC doesn't allow anyone to get their photo taken there-even Maggie Daley the mayor's wife. Members of the WAC support both candidates; I don't think there is a consensus either way.

Let's also recall that it was an anti-Semitic Democrat who was pushing the Obama is Muslim smear (all while drinking the anti-Semitic Zionists/Jews run the world kool-aid).

Seriously. I am so frustrated by the lies, misrepresentations, cover-ups, fraud, deceit and outright criminal activity on the left. I know what's true and what's not, and the media keeps telling me the exact opposite of what I know. I feel like I'm being gaslighted.

28 Tarheel  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 9:10:14am

Off Topic:
I live in Nashville, TN and just went to early voting - McCain/Palin, Rep. for Senate and House, of course.

When I left I noticed plenty of 0bama/Blinden signs but NO McCain/Palin signs. Called the local Republican HQ and they said they had signs at the voting place (local library) but they were having trouble keeping them up. They had someone now going back to replace the signs.

0bama supporters at work. Change you can believe in!

34 DistantThunder  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 9:11:34am

Here's the analogy that David Cay. lib economist, uses to described taxation:

It's like plucking a chicken. the government wants to take as much money (feathers) as possible without actually killing the chicken.

The problem with that is look at Europe - all those poor plucked people - and any little downturn - they catch the flu when the US catches a cold.

41 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 9:13:56am

Casual smear, formal smear, whatever... a smear's a smear (except when it's on my bagel, in which case it is a schmear).

Obama and his supporters keep pushing that "kill him" smear on Palin/McCain. The Secret Service investigation found nothing to substantiate the claim of a lone journalist who made the claim - and likely invented the details even as fellow journalists were reporting nearby. Pulp fiction.

The media claimed that McCain requested a cellphone tower installed on their ranch in Arizona. Sorry, but it was the USSS who did the request.

It also shouldn't be difficult to find which blogs were busy cutting this smear down to size and showing it to be nothing more than a fabrication... but Tapper doesn't bother with such details, since that would actually require... work.

Welcome to the world of the left. Right is wrong. Truth is a lie. Up is down. Whether she said it or not isn't worht my time. We know what M.O. is about. I am much more interested what BHO told the Iraqi gov't concerning keeping our troops longer so that he can declare the opposite policy to the American people. Now that is a story that has me "atwitter"

No let me take that back. Dems get "atwitter" - conservatives get passionate for the truth.

I guess I should feel relieved that not one supporter of the measure thought to submit a summary...

In my opinion though, I think they should change the way that works. It lends itself to abuse, as far as I can see. Yes, when it works to your favor, it's fine, but if the shoe was on the other foot, well, we wouldn't like it.

They need to clean this process up.

You know (come to think of it), CNN is the one media (the first?) outlet which is now relying on "twitter" -- and they ask their viewers to use "twitter" (it's a free text messaging program) "to twitter them" -- Rick Sanchez, Anderson Cooper, etc., constantly say, "twitter me" -- is that obscene or what?

No, I agree 100%. Not a good method.

Still, if no one could be bothered...maybe they could ask The League of Women Voters. I used to use their guides all the time...they were the only explanations (not propaganda) of the various arcane amendments we vote on in Texas.

That comment really irritated me - it's so incredibly backward, when the lefty blogs are the ones who really do eat up every crappy hateful rumor that people circulate.

When the Daily Kos creeps made up the lurid claim that Trig Palin wasn't really Sarah Palin's child, but her daughter's, the MSM somberly claimed they had to discuss it because it "was out there in the public" or some such bull.

110 Odinga  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 9:34:54am

Now why all this attention on PA? If Senator Odinga is up by +12 there is no hope right?

Well I tell you PA is in play and McCain will take it.

And here in Canada, false, inflammatory rumors (posted at KOS), are aired on The National as "news." (today's media is such a joke -- CNN is also increasingly attempting to look like a blogsite formulated along the lines of The Daily KOS...)

I just wish the MSM would drop the pretense of being objective and embrace their true nature of being partisan. The early days of the US Republic the media outlets were actually proud of proclaiming their biases and had no problems with announcing them in no uncertain terms.

re: #88 buzzsawmonkey

By the way, on NPR this morning it was mentioned that lots and lots of young people--black as well as white--are leaving South Africa because of the ubiquitous violence.

The commentator mentioned that originally it was whites who were leaving--out of "racism" and "fear of majority rule," naturally, not because they were worried that the new government wouldn't keep order--but now violence is so ubiquitous that fleeing is not confined to any one race.

As South Africa prepares to follow Zimbabwe down the chutes into chaos, let us remember that it is under the tender mercies of the Communist African National Congress that this is occurring.

And let us remember, once again, that "human rights" are worthless in the absence of a government that is dedicated to protecting civil rights under the impartial rule of law.

I really believe the Michelle Obama/African Press International "story" was intentionally bogus to set up the idiotic accusation Tapper makes.

120 lurking faith  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 10:17:49am

I have a linguistic quibble. "All atwitter" doesn't unambiguously mean "all [conservative blogs were] atwitter." "All atwitter" is commonly used as a phrase whether the noun is singular or plural - I could say "Jake Tapper is all atwitter about this false rumor," and few would take me to the grammatical woodshed for including "all."

However, Tapper's starting the sentence: "The conservative blogs" (rather than "Some conservative blogs," or even "Many conservative blogs") is enough to imply inclusion of all conservative blogs.

So he's still guilty as charged.

121 mike(in)savage  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 10:21:02am

Tapper doesn't cite LGF as an example of a "conservative blog". Charles is perfectly correct in his response, but it still strikes me as strange he would refer to his post on the subject since he normally objects when LGF is referred to as a Conservative Blog.

Not trying to be a wise-ass. Just sayin'.

hmmm...I don't want the MSM to become openly partisan...I want them to be held accountable, and I want objective, factual reports, not propaganda...(btw, I saw a Beeb report out of Iraq -- it was about how Iraqis are now forming/writing/publishing their own newspapers...but, guess what? The vast majority of the newspapers are centered on ethnic/religious/tribal lines...and, each newspaper employs a goon squad. There are a few "inddependents" who go about delivering an objective story, but they don't have a goon squad to protect them -- so when the independents try to cover a story objectively, they will be beaten up by the local biased goons...Real mess...

125 Gus 802  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 11:59:36am

I saw that this morning and thought Tapper was out of line using the word "atwitter." His characterization wasn't even true since I didn't observe much dialog regarding this issue in any of the blogs I came across yesterday.

Jake Tapper has Jumped the Shark. He seemed like that last best hope for injecting an opposing point of view at ABC but that is obviously no longer the case. The ABC Blog is full of partisan liberals some of which includes a former Democratic staffer/intern.

I don't know the story is behind the disappearing blog comments at the ABC Blog but they will typically censor and negative criticism of Barack Obama.

In summary: Jake Tapper

126 zuukie  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 12:12:35pm

Oh please. No one proved the African Press story was false. Many sources gave their opinion saying they believed it was false. Obama's campaign didn't prove it false. They gave their opinion saying it was false. Just a lot of twitter by everybody who didn't bother to read the African Press website and Obama's camp in addition.

I wonder what kind of pressure they are dealing with over at AP. Based on articles at African Press, it seems pretty clear that there is a conflict of interest over there. [Link: tinyurl.com...] They have a theme that blacks are discriminated against in America while at the same time finding fault with Odinga and his connection with Obama. Michelle Obama probably felt she could get them to lay off the birth certificate story because of a perceived unity with the black community. It should be interesting how this plays out. Do they shut up to support black community unity or do they realize that blacks in America can be just as diverse in their moral standards as blacks in Africa or whites anywhere.

Based on the email exchanges we have a bunch of hotshots demanding they release the tape of the call. Corsi's demands are a joke to read. AP didn't spread the story and are the only ones who have a lot to lose. They are in Kenya. Odinga is there. Odinga people have no compunction in burning down churches with people in them.

The people demanding they release the tape sound like a bunch of kids demanding their mommy buy them that box of cookies in the store.

re: #126 zuukie

If the African Press International story is true, and a tape of the conversation exists, for what reason would the API refuse to release at least the relevant portion of the tape?

It doesn't make sense.

Why wouldn't they release the tape right now? Take a guess.

"...Although the family is treating the incident as common robbery, Sarah Obama who attended the funeral of the late Saleh at Kendu Bay Muslim Cementry in Kendu-Bat Town, Rachuonyo district broke her silency and said the family was targeted for elimination by unknown people with sinister motive and expressed fear that the killing has some element of political overtone, which could be related to his grand son’s latest campaign for the US presidency." I admit, I was taken in. I posted a comment in someone else's blog (also taken in) riffing on the words of "Michelle". That was before I saw the refutation on LGF.

Interesting choice of words: "all atwitter". If a bunch of conservative blogs post about it TO REFUTE IT, that counts. If a few moron commenters (like myself) spam unrelated comment threads (unlike myself) that counts. What a weasel is this Tapper.

131 David Baker  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 5:33:34pm
For the record, Jake Tapper emailed to say he didn’t intend to lump all conservative blogs together with his comment.

Yes he did.

Right now they are working on the legalities.

135 BeckoningChasm  Fri, Oct 17, 2008 6:22:29am

"For the record, Jake Tapper emailed to say he didn’t intend to lump all conservative blogs together with his comment."

His paragraph begins, "The conservative blogs". Not "Some," or "A handful of," or "Many" or any kind of qualifier. "The" would seem to indicate that yes, he did intend to lump them all together. His email to you is a lie. I would expect a published correction but I ain't holding my breath.

136 rock-n-roll hurricane  Fri, Oct 17, 2008 8:18:26am

I read Tapper's phrase by lumping the words 'all atwitter' together. A singular person can be 'all atwitter'. I read it to say 'many right-wing sites were excited by this story', not 'every right-wing site went crazy over this story.'

Just my personal read.
