What's the Frequency, Pierre?

Entertainment | Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 10:55:53 am PDT

Sure, I could make a joke about this story, but why bother? It’s perfect just the way it is: Rather covers election for French TV.

PARIS — Former CBS star reporter Dan Rather has been tapped by French pay TV group Canal Plus to cover the U.S. presidential election.

I was wondering what will happen to a large, open-air gathering if The Chosen One loses. Although there will obviously be security and only ticket-holders will be allowed inside Hutchinson Field, the rest of the park and the surrounding streets are bound to be filled with very energetic Obama supporters who are going to be extremely disappointed if things don't go there way. Obama will inevitably refuse to concede; he'll announce that the campaign is filing lawsuits in every state that's even remotely close. That is a recipe for a riot that makes 1968 look like a Sunday School picnic.

102 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 16, 2008 11:19:16am

Well, it took 'em long enough. The FBI is investigating ACORN nationwide to see if there's any links between the voter fraud allegations in more than a dozen states to see if it's a coordinated national scam.

ACORN's excuse?

ACORN has said the "vast majority" of its workers are conscientious, but some might have turned in duplicate applications or provided fake information to pad their pay. Workers caught submitting false information have been fired, ACORN officials say.

ACORN says laws in a number of states require it to submit all registration cards it collects even dubious ones, so its workers segregate applications with missing, suspicious or false information and flag them so state election officials can quickly check them further.

Some workers? Lightworkers perhaps. How many are bogus? Thousands. Tens of thousands?

Heck, in Lake County they gave up trying to figure out because 100% of the ACORN collected registrations were bogus (2,100 of first 2,100 were bogus). Still want to stick with just a few nuts?

/the problem with ACORN is that it's full of leftist nuts /longshanks

re: #88 doppelganglander

I was wondering what will happen to a large, open-air gathering if The Chosen One loses. Although there will obviously be security and only ticket-holders will be allowed inside Hutchinson Field, the rest of the park and the surrounding streets are bound to be filled with very energetic Obama supporters who are going to be extremely disappointed if things don't go there way. Obama will inevitably refuse to concede; he'll announce that the campaign is filing lawsuits in every state that's even remotely close. That is a recipe for a riot that makes 1968 look like a Sunday School picnic.

If he loses, in the future he'll have to run on his record, which in four years time will be even worse than his current one.

And by that time, all the ACORN connections and missing years in his CV will have been filled in.

So while he'll stay in the Senate (his war chest is now huge), he'll likely never get another chance to be Presideent this good again.

And if he tries any funny stuff like encouraging riots, etc, his chance of ever getting the nomination again will be zero.

So I expect him to play nice, at least publically.

If that's the case, you can expect some global agitation to be created by him and his pal Ahmedinejad soon to drive up prices.

That's going to be difficult, we are now talking about having to drive prices up by 20-30% and keeping them there. Demand is way down due to the reaction to the initial run up in price this year, and will likely stay that way until we dig out of this financial collapse. The cuts that OPEC and friends would have to make to drive prices back up are going to be unpalatable to them to say the least, and forcing a crisis is a risky proposition at best.

Well, it took 'em long enough. The FBI is investigating ACORN nationwide to see if there's any links between the voter fraud allegations in more than a dozen states to see if it's a coordinated national scam.

ACORN's excuse?

Some workers? Lightworkers perhaps. How many are bogus? Thousands. Tens of thousands?

Heck, in Lake County they gave up trying to figure out because 100% of the ACORN collected registrations were bogus (2,100 of first 2,100 were bogus). Still want to stick with just a few nuts?

/the problem with ACORN is that it's full of leftist nuts/longshanks

I wonder how many Republicans actually got registered by ACORN? If they could document a registration rate of 45%....hell I'll make it easy, a registration rate of 25% I will accept ACORN `may~ have been trying to run it legitimately.

You don't spend $400 million, including illegal foreign contributions, and mobilize the entire leftist army of kooks to commit rampant fraud and spread disinformation, and then just quietly concede like Nixon in 1960, for the good of the country. As far as he's concerned, his personal desires and the good of the country are identical. If he loses, I expect it to be Christmas at the earliest before it's finally decided.

I never admired Dan Rather. He was a liar from day one (Nov. 22, 1963) when he reported that the Zapruder film depicted Kennedy being thrown violently forward after being shot from behind. Years later when the Zapruder film was shown on Geraldo Rivera's late-night TV show, it became obvious that Dan Rather was a damn liar. And I didn't like the way Rather brazenly disrespected President Nixon when he was the CBS White House correspondant.

Zombie has a point. So much of a point, in fact, that voters will continue to claim to support Obama by actually voting for him when they get to the polls–that’s how pervasive the methodological bias is! We need a way to disaggregate votes in a way that permits us to separate genuine expressions of preference (which, as has been documented, are overwhelmingly Republican) from spurious ones (which are Democratic).

To me this entire issue is about the elite liberal Coasts vs. the heart of America.

The liberal coasts, and their liberal cohorts in Europe despise the rest of our country (eh, chem: "fly over states") and everything they stand for. They aren't simply rejecting Governor Palin, but instead everything she stands for; which to me are the true American values. They wish for us to drop our core American values, and instead take on their hollow, secular, liberal values: its a Culture War!

The left in this Country, and around the world, do not simply disagree with the "red states" but instead arrogantly look down upon them with disgust, and derision.

Governor Palin is AMERICA, old school America and it is because of this that they hate her.

Did you take the ride across the glacier from the top of l'Aiguille du Midi to Hellbronner Italy?

No, but it sounds amazing. Our weather was a little bit dicey, but two of the days were beautiful. We were total American neanderthals in the Louvre, however. 1 hour in and out. We were a little ashamed and a little amused at ourselves. "Where's the Mona Lisa?... OK, let's catch our train."

re: #152 doppelganglander

I agree this is his best, if not only, shot at the presidency, . . .

Personally, I think he ran not expecting to get the nomination, but to set in motion the plans for a future, more serious, run. But as The Chicago Way played out in the caucuses, it started to dawn on him that 'I have a shot at this'. He was so unprepared by his success, as evidenced by him not even trying to vote centrist on the things that matter to his liability, 'Joe Middle America', or even pretend to be bi-partisan in any way during his brief Senate tenure. I really think his success this campaign season surprised him as much as it surprised me. But there is also the possibility that he saw a Hillary Clinton win this year as a too long a delay (8 years) in his game plan, so he decided to roll the dice now. As noted above, he really has the Left Lunatic Fringe completely motivated (as shown by the ACORN voter registration scandal, as well as other thugish acts). But no matter what Geraldine Ferraro may say now as a good Democrat, her words during the primaries -- basically calling Obama an affirmative-action candidate -- were one of those 'accidental truth' moments. I also think there's a lot of manipulation, and not just a little luck, in Obama being where he is right now: A heartbeat away from the Presidency.

My experience in Paris is that if you ask someone in English whether they speak English, you will get a contemptuous "non!" regardless of that person's linguistic capabilities; if you ask the same question in French, you will get a grudging "un peu," and will be treated with moderate disdain; if you are willing to attempt to fumble your way along in French, regardless of how bad it is, people are usually willing to not only help you with reasonable courtesy, but will address you in perfectly adequate English with a good grace.

Which in my opinion is as it should be; it is arrogant as hell to show up in a foreign country and presume that everyone should speak your language for your convenience. If you are willing to show that you are respectful enough of the host country to attempt their language, the French--even in Paris--are for the most part quite pleasant.

I think you are the first Lizard that has been able to echo my feelings about France exactly. I've tried to present this idea over and over here on LGF over the years, but some people will swear that it's all their fault.

Not as bad as Morley Safer:

The Columbia University School of Journalism in New York City once staged a very high-profile seminar to discuss the proper role of reporters in a war.

Suppose that during the Vietnam War, the Vietcong allow an American network TV correspondent and his camera crew to go along on a mission…and to film the fighting from the Communist side. After a few days, the Vietcong soldiers get in position along a trail to ambush an American patrol that is approaching.

The panel was asked to discuss this question: “What’s the proper role of the American TV crew?”

At that Columbia University seminar, Morley Safer -- who had been a CBS correspondent in Vietnam -- said that if he had been with that camera crew, he would have filmed what happened and not tried to warn the American patrol…his role as a correspondent was to observe, not to participate.

It might not be what you ask but how you ask. In France, it is the height of rudeness to speak to somebody with first saying, "Bonjour Monsieur" (or Madam, Mademoiselle). That phrase signifies you are civilized and that you respect the person you are speaking too. Also, the typical American approach is to offer a big friendly smile. To the French that means either you are a raving idiot or you are making fun of them.

I think he absolutely expected to get the nomination. I think we're mostly in agreement around here that Obama has been groomed by The Leftist Powers That Be from very early in his career, possibly as early as Columbia. He has progressed up the ladder at an unusually rapid pace, taking advantage of odd circumstances that may or may not have occurred naturally. Along the way, the objective has been to keep him as mysterious as possible. No one was supposed to know anything about him except what's in his highly fictionalized autobiographies. He has cast as few votes as possible in both the Illinois and the U.S. Senate. His speeches are as light as air and contain nothing specific.

When you are running an empty suit for president, it makes sense to push him forward as early as possible, before the country can get a sense of who he his or gain accurate information about his beliefs and policies. With the very unpopular Bush leaving office, there was no reason to risk waiting another 4 or 8 years before advancing the Messiah. No one really liked Hillary anyway and no one felt bad about shoving her aside in favor of the empty suit, because they are desperate to regain power.

Bottom line, IMHO, this has so far played out exactly as Obama and his puppetmasters expected it to.

re: #193 buzzsawmonkey

Absolutely. Even if your attempts are awful, meeting people half way in their own country is a sign of courtesy and openess. My experiences in Quebec (yes, I know it's not the real France, but it shouldn't have to be) have been positive because I like being there and I attempt French (though terribly- not proud of that).
That being said, I might say that no matter what Americans do, they will not liked by others because of some silly sense of insecurity. Palin, McCain or Obama even could speak French fluently and still be nattered about.

Funny and true story:

My husband and I were sitting in a Norwegian restaurant a couple years ago when a group of Americans tourists came to our table and started gesturing and slowly asking,"Can we take your picture?"

I was about to say, "Sure," when my husband, without missing a beat, pretended not to understand their request.

So they repeated themselves and showed us their camera, motioning they'd like to take our picture.

So we smiled, said, "Ja" and they happily snapped our picture.

Somewhere, someday a family from Ohio is going to point at me and say, "Imposter."

True - and in Britain you're screwed if you do not say 'please' when asking for something in the shops, and 'thank you' when you got it.
Basically, people who are not saying 'thank you' everywhere and to everybody are cosnidered rude - especially in Wales, where we even thank our bus drivers when leaving the bus - thats public transport busses, that is!
