Whew! It was getting near impossible to keep up with the last thread! So many stunningly fine and/or witty remarks!
Uh, someone posted a YouTube Video of McCain's performance at the AL Smith Dinner in NYC tonight; I watched it but it was totally out of synch in terms of audio and video.
Does anyone have a better copy?

John McCain meets John Murtha in a dark parking lot. "Here's your money, John, all in non-sequential tens and twenties" "Thanks, John. And don't forget, when you take office, I get secret service coverage specializing in attacks from ex-marines." "Sure, John, just keep your mouth shut from now until you're dead".

Just got this email. It's real, from a retired Marine Sergeant Major. Seems to be from a couple years ago, but I had never seen it. I'll have to post it in two parts, but it's well worth reading....
'The Axis of Idiots'
Jimmy Carter, you are the father of the Islamic Nazi movement. You threw the Shah under the bus, welcomed the Ayatollah home, and then lacked the spine to confront the terrorists when they took our embassy and our people hostage. Our Canadian friends gave as many as they could sanctuary in their embassy in Iran. They're more American than you'll ever be.. You're the runner-in-chief.
Bill Clinton, you played ring around the Lewinsky while the terrorists were at war with us. You got us into a fight with them in Somalia and then you ran from it. Your weak-willed responses to the U.S.S. Cole and the First Trade Center Bombing and Our Embassy Bombings emboldened the killers. Each time you failed to respond adequately, they grew bolder, until 9/11/2001.
John Kerry, dishonesty is your most prominent attribute. You lied about American Soldiers in Vietnam. Your military service, like your life, is more fiction than fact. You've accused our military of terrorizing women and children in Iraq. You called Iraq the wrong war, wrong place, wrong time, the same words you used to describe Vietnam. You're a fake. You want to run from Iraq and abandon the Iraqis to murderers just as you did to the Vietnamese. Iraq, like Vietnam, is another war that you were for, before you were against it.
John Murtha, you said our military was broken. You said we can't win militarily in Iraq. You accused United States Marines of cold-blooded murder without proof and said we should redeploy to Okinawa. Okinawa, John? And the Democrats call you their military expert! Are you sure you didn't suffer a traumatic brain injury while you were off building your war hero resume? You're a sad, pitiable, corrupt and washed up politician. You're not a Marine, sir. You wouldn't amount to a good pimple on a real Marine's ass. You're a phony and a disgrace. Run away, John.
Dick Durbin, you accused our Soldiers at Guantanamo of being Nazis, tenders of Soviet style gulags and as bad as the regime of Pol Pot, who murdered two million of his own people after your party abandoned Southeast Asia to the Communists. Now you want to abandon the Iraqis to the same fate. History was not a good teacher for you, was it? Lord help us! See Dick run.
Ted Kennedy, for days on end you held poster-sized pictures from Abu Ghraib in front of any available television camera. Al Jazeera quoted you saying that Iraqi's torture chambers were open under new management. Did you see the news, Teddy? The Islamic Nazis demonstrated another beheading for you. If you truly supported our troops, you'd show the world poster-sized pictures of that atrocity and demand the annihilation of it. Your legislation stripping support from the South Vietnamese led to a communist victory there. You're a bloated, drunken fool, bent on repeating the same historical blunder that turned freedom-seeking people over to homicidal, genocidal maniacs. To paraphrase John Murtha, all while sitting on your wide, gin-soaked ass in Washington.
Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Carl Levine, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Russ Feingold, Hillary Clinton, Pat Leahy, Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, the Hollywood Leftist morons, et al, ad nauseam: Every time you stand in front of television cameras and broadcast to the Islamic Nazis that we went to war because our President lied, that the war is wrong and our Soldiers are torturers, that we should leave Iraq, you give the Islamic butchers - the same ones that tortured and mutilated American Soldiers - cause to think that we'll run away again, and all they have to do is hang on a little longer. It is inevitable that we, the infidels, will have to defeat the Islamic jihadists. Better to do it now on their turf, than later on ours after they have gained both strength and momentum.

Ozark Mountain Daredevil Thu, Oct 16, 2008 9:53:23pm |
American news media, the New York Times particularly: Each time you publish stories about national defense secrets and our intelligence gathering methods, you become one united with the sub-human pieces of camel dung that torture and mutilate the bodies of American Soldiers. You can't strike up the courage to publish cartoons, but you can help Al Qaeda destroy my country. Actually, you are more dangerous to us than Al Qaeda is. Think about that each time you face Mecca to admire your Pulitzer..
You are America's 'AXIS OF IDIOTS.' Your Collective Stupidity will destroy us. Self-serving politics and terrorist-abetting news scoops are more important to you than our national security or the lives of innocent civilians and Soldiers. It bothers you that defending ourselves gets in the way of your elitist sport of politics and your ignorant editorializing. There is as much blood on your hands as is on the hands of murdering terrorists. Don't ever doubt that. Your frolics will only serve to extend this war as they extended Vietnam. If you want our Soldiers home as you claim, knock off the crap and try supporting your country ahead of supporting your silly political aims and aiding our enemies.
Yes, I'm questioning your patriotism. Your loyalty ends with self. I'm also questioning why you're stealing air that decent Americans could be breathing. You don't deserve the protection of our men and women in uniform. You need to run away from this war, this country. Leave the war to the people who have the will to see it through and the country to people who are willing to defend it.
No, Mr. President, you don't get off the hook, either. Our country has two enemies: Those who want to destroy us from the outside and those who attempt it from within. Your Soldiers are dealing with the outside force. It's your obligation to support them by confronting the AXIS OF IDIOTS.
America must hear it from you that these self-centered people are harming our country, a betting the enemy and endangering our safety. Well up a little anger, please, and channel it toward the appropriate target. You must prosecute those who leak national security secrets to the media. You must prosecute those in the media who knowingly publish those secrets.
Our Soldiers need you to confront the enemy that they cannot. They need you to do it now.
Semper Fi,
J. D. Pendry - Sergeant Major, USMC, Retired

THe case left the Ohio courts and went to the Supreme Court for an emergency review. Justice Brennan somehow decides the case alone (why?) though if he chooses, he can convene all of the Supremes.
I'm just so curious. What happens in these situations? Does it take hours/days for the Supremes to utter their verdict?
Ummmm. Justice Brennan died in 1997. :-)
Justice Stevens remains in somewhat better health at age 88, and is the Justice that 'oversees' the 6th and 7th Circuit Courts of Appeals.

You need to check Drudge now. The lead image over the words, "DRUDGE REPORT" has a pic of McCain and Obama sitting on either side of a Roman Catholic bishop (or is it an archbishop?)
Anyway, Obama's face oozes arrogance. I'm glad Drudge has this up. Sometimes a pic DOES count for a thousand words. This one does.
[Link: www.drudgereport.com...]
He is a Cardinal, I'm not sure who he is though.

Correctumundo! But if Mr. Justice Stevens finds that there were no constituitional (US) errors in the Sixth Circuit, he can uphold their decision.
If he thinks that they were wrong, then he must convene the rest of the court - or at least get 3 other Justices to agree that the Court should hear it and if that happens they will hear and decide it on an expedited basis.
And, while Justice Stevens is somewhat, uh, unpredictable, I do expect him to uphold the decision of the Sixth Circuit - and fairly quickly, too.

Evidence Mounts: Ayers Co-Wrote Obama's Dreams
Evidence continues to mount that Barack Obama had substantial help from Bill Ayers in the creation of his 1995 book, Dreams From My Father, a book that Time Magazine has called "the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician." The evidence falls into five general categories, here summarized.
The discovery of new matching nautical metaphors from both Ayers and Obama that almost assuredly came from the same source: Ayers, a former merchant seaman.
The discovery of a Bill Ayers' essay on memoir writing, whose postmodern themes and phrases are echoed throughout Dreams.
A newly discovered book chapter from 1990 that shows clearly and painfully the limits of Obama's prose style the year he received a contract to write Dreams.
The revelation by radical Islamicist Rashid Khalidi that Ayers made his "dining room table" available for neighborhood writers who needed help.
A refined timeline that shows Ayers had the means, the motive and the time to help Obama when he needed it most.
Wow, wouldn't that be fun? It'd cost Lord President For Life Obama the election.

It might. For that to happen, at least four Justices have to agree to hear the case, including Stevens. Realwest noted this as well as what would happen next. Still, I don't think it will get that far. This case involves long-standing laws of a kind Stevens has supported. He's left, but he's not "pivot on a dime for political reasons" left.

Quick question. The last time Oil was selling for $70 a barrel, what was the price of gas? When it was selling for $140, we had $4 gas. Gas is not $2 currently.... (Okay, I realize there are fixed costs involved, but I just want a data point.)
It's headed towards $2/gal in quite a few places, AFAIK...hell, here in Nashville, we're still recovering from our (partially) self-induced shortage after Ike and I'm seeing sub-$3/gal gas starting to pop up around town.

IIRC, Steven's would have to get 3 other Justices to agree to have the SCOTUS review the case. But I honestly don't see that happening.
If I'm wrong, however and Steven's does find any US Constitutional issues, and convinces 3 other Justices to agree, then it goes to the entire SCOTUS (at which point the other three and indeed, even Stevens, could change their minds "upon further reflection.
SCOTUS REALLY HATES getting involved in voting issues as they are usually the province of the States, not the Feds, but if the Republicans make the argument that by NOT preventing ACORN from registering non-qualified voters, then that is tantamount to depriving legitimate voters to have THEIR votes counted and their "voices" quietened.

Simpsons jumped the shark for me back in 2006 when.....wait...scratch that. The girl's Huffy the Simpsons were riding teetered over the brink of that flimsy makeshift plywood ramp they set up and into the shark tank with this episode belittling American soldiers ON VETERANS' DAY WEEKEND!
That same weekend, Don Cherry's Coaches Corner on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada ran a very moving tribute to the Canadian Soldiers who were killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan. Imagine that- a country that we deride for hardly having a military somehow managed to put together a more somber and appropriate tribute to their soldiers than the supposedly jingoistic FOX network.
I still watch some of the older episodes. A lot of the new ones just plain suck or are not funny. Maybe this season will be better, but i'm not keeping my hopes up.

Cardinal over bishop and archbishop. Cardinals pick the Pope, but they don't necessarily have to have been bishops first.
John Cardinal Henry Newman (for which Newman Centers on campus are named) was a cardinal who was never a bishop.
That's true, though it very rarely happens. The normal progression is priest, monsignor, bishop, archbishop, then cardinal. Only cardinal's are eligible to replace a pope.

NO - You're not the only one - but I see this as a glaring weakness for Obama (and I'm glad to see McCain has stumbled on it). What Joe asked Obama and what Obama's answer was, wouldn't be changed AT ALL if any of the mealymouth shit about Joe had come out before the debate.
The question was VERY PROPERLY FRAMED by McCain as "Class warfare, take from small business owners and give it to those who, apparently, "need it" but can't work the 12-14 days, 7 days a week that Joe does to get that income."
And no amount of dirt they dig up on Joe is gonna change that and the voters heard that, too.

The winner was Levar Burton. His "biography" started with being kidnapped from Africa, and brought to the U.S. as a slave in the 1800s, who eventually worked his way up to being the chief engineer of Starfleet's flagship in the 24th century!

Howabout Samuel L. Jackson?
Not Italian enough. I am thinking they'd pick someone close at hand that they all knew, so what started as a joke out of frustration could snowball into a reality. That would be some Italian guy who works at the Vatican.
Samuel L. Jackson would have to involve the notion that he was in Rome for an audience with the Pope, who was inconveniently dead. The set-up would be about the same as Trading Places, where the two rich guys pick a person at random to be their guinea pig: you'd have a Cardinal say, "Look, any unmarried Catholic male can be Pope. Even that guy!" Possible, but not as strong as the other.

I hate that show. I chucked the whole TV.

Yeah, I loved it too. But, I hadn't watched it in years(ever since the episode where they refuse to sing the Star Spangled Banner before a baseball game because it is a horrible violent, 'war anthem' and decide to sing 'Oh, Canada' instead. Jesus)but a few weeks ago a stumbled upon the show and decided to give it a go. Mistake. The whole episode was about how dear sweet intelligent honest little Liberal Lisa takes on FOX News. "They are liars!", she cries. Uh huh. If they're liars, what the hell is Olbermann? Ugh. When I think of how great the show once was, I want to drag Shearer and the rest of the libtards who have ruined the show into the street and beat the living crap out of them.

UH OH - All you Southern Men watch out:
Goergia woman with 5 dead spouses leaves jail
RALEIGH, N.C. - A Georgia grandmother who came under suspicion because all five of her husbands had died was released Thursday from a North Carolina jail where she had been held on charges in one of their deaths.
Betty Neumar, 76, posted $300,000 bond late Thursday morning at the Stanly County jail, where she's been held since her arrest in May, Sheriff Rick Burris said.
Neumar is charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder in the 1986 death of her fourth husband, Harold Gentry.
"I can't believe they let her out. It's just wrong, flat out wrong. I don't understand," said Gentry's brother, Al, who pressed law enforcement for more than two decades to get the case reopened.
Prosecutors allege Betty Neumar tried to hire three people to kill Gentry in the six weeks before his bullet-riddled body was found in his rural North Carolina home.
Since her arrest, police in Florida and Ohio have begun to re-examine the deaths of her first child - Gary Flynn, whose 1985 death was ruled a suicide- and three of her other husbands, though she faces no charges in those cases.
Georgia police recently closed their re-examination of the death of her fifth husband, John Neumar, saying they have no evidence she was involved.
His son, John K. Neumar, was also shocked to find she was out of jail: "I've lost all faith in the legal system," he said from his Georgia home.

What 'dirt' are they digging up on Joe the plumber? I've heard various rumors that he's 1) not registered to vote 2) not really a plumber and 3) a racist, since he referred to Obama's obfuscation as 'tap dancing'
How does any of that change the fact that Obama let the mask slip a little and wants all kinds of entitlement programs for 'Community organizers' at the expense of taxpayers?
Oh, let's see...they say he doesn't have a license and needs one to operate, so he's in trouble for that now, he has a tax lien of just under $1200, a lien to a hospital for around the same amount...I even read that they found out by going through records that he once lived in Alaska (did anyone just hear ominous music?) - and it's not just DUers, it's the L.A. Times and other various "news" organizations - they are not just trying to hurt him, they're trying to ruin his life. He goes by "Joe" but his real name is Sam or something, and his address was posted on liberal blogs today.
One of the more upsetting things to me is that Obama ridiculed him today at a rally - people were laughing (in part, at the idea that McCain was a plumber's advocate...and the way he said "plumber" was sneering and disgusting, to me) - and he said he didn't know any "plumbers" who made "a quarter of a million" dollars a year, but that's not even what the man SAID to Obama.
I just think McCain needs to make an ad out of that. Or some 527 does.
Thank you for the replies, guys - they're all good, and they're all helping me. I am just so very angry about this, and I am really concerned about how Obama will behave as president if he wins. He is a thug, and a liar. McCain MUST beat him. He just HAS to.

Yep. Consensus among fans (never mind politically minded watchers) is that it hasn't been any good for at least the last four years or so.
I quit watching around 2003. Somehow the writing team's idea of "funny" gradually changed from the character-driven humor we all loved, to scattershot idiotic gag lines independent of character (and many of those wannabe punchlines were political). The first instance of this I can remember was Bart saying "Don't forget Ken Starr!" in one of the Halloween episodes, when Kodos and Kang were taking people away from earth. I guess there was supposed to be a rimshot there? It was completely stupid.
They've been trying to be "hip" for years now, I guess, and it isn't any better than Family Guy***, or other poorly written gag-dependent trash.
*** occasionally funny, but not often enough to get me to watch the show again.

re: #299 capitalist piglet
That would be cool. I was thinking Rush Limbaugh could have a bake sale for him.
Rush Limbaugh doesn't do bake sales for individuals. He celebrates individuals who show the initiative to hold their own bake sales.
The initial idea for Dan's Bake Sale was conceived on the The Rush Limbaugh Show in 1993. One caller, "Dan" from Fort Collins, Colorado, told Rush Limbaugh that he was photocopying a coworker's subscription to the Limbaugh Letter, Rush's monthly magazine that covers current events. The reason was that Dan's wife was not a fan of the show, and would not allocate the funds needed from the family budget to subscribe to the Letter. Limbaugh light-heartedly informed Dan that he disapproves his photocopying printed material, and offhandedly suggested that Dan organize a bake sale to raise funds for a subscription, spoofing then-recent bake sales to raise funds to reduce the national debt.
After Dan's call ended, the next caller to the show noted that he felt Rush was a bit harsh, and that he intended to attend Dan's Bake Sale. Rush again dismissed the topic. The next caller noted that he would like to attend Dan's Bake Sale. Rush repeatedly announced they would take no more "bake sale" calls but the gig was on and everyone calling in for the next week or so put in a plug for Dan's Bake Sale.
Limbaugh never seriously proposed a Bake Sale and neither did "Dan." But the landslide of support for Dan and his bake sale was on. Eventually, some 80,000 people from all over the United States and as far away as Australia showed up in Fort Collins for Dan's Bake Sale.[citation needed] Jay Leno even made jokes about it on The Tonight Show.
Limbaugh did attend, and had a brief presentation, giving Dan his first issue of his subscription.
Dan considered making it an annual event, but agreed with Limbaugh's assessment that the original just could never again be replicated.

While preening themselves on being such benevolent and wise rulers of the manor. Joe the Plumber just didn't realize how unseemly it is for a mere plumber to be thinking of making $250,000-$300,00 a year. Those kind of bucks are for people like Michele O., who went to the "best" schools and turned their backs on grubby commerce to devote themselves to public service./

Do you remember 'Dueling Brandos' from SNL's very first season? Peter Boyle and John Belushi doing Brando impersonations side by side.
There are several possibilities for Sarah:
1) She and Tina Fey both play Sarah Palin and try to 'out-maverick' each other.
2) She comes on stage when Tina Fey is playing her, like when Barbara Streisand came onto the set of 'Coffee Talk.'
3) They role-reverse, as you suggested. For example, Sarah Palin as Tina Fey is "practicing" how to play Sarah Palin, when Lorne Michaels tells her that they have the real Sarah Palin to coach her -- in comes Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. Tina-as-Sarah keeps correcting Sarah-as-Tina-as-Sarah with regard to pronunciation, vocabulary, idioms, mannerisms ("no, no, no, you gotta wink like THIS" *wink*).
Remember, McCain's been on SNL at least a couple of times. He's been funny each time, too.

Once the Party's ticket is set and made, arguing against it becomes a sin.

I would normally disagree with that on the basis that journalists are not party activists and have a certain professional obligation to call 'em as they see 'em. On the other hand, the liberal media have been so blatantly partisan this time around and it's become so difficult for McCain and Palin to get a fair shake from them that perhaps the conservative media ought to give the GOP ticket a bit more leeway.

Hey Killian....what can you tell me about a hedge fund called Fortress Investment Group (NYSE: FIG)? I first became familiar with them upon their takeover of Rail America and the Florida East Coast railroad. I think even before the Fortress takeover, Rail America had a reputation for running every piece of property into the ground and trying to strip any given property of its assets and re-selling it.
Then I found out about FIG taking over a bunch of distressed mortgages in post-Katrina Louisiana and foreclosing on those properties. Even without the Rail America-style business practices, they truly do look as though they are your prototypical Wall Street slimeballs. It is with some schadenfreude that I see their stock has plummeted from around $24 per share to just over $5 per share.
Plus the Silky Pony John Edwards was apparently on their payroll at some point after 2004.

Permit me to continue my blistering assault on Peggy Noonan. I find it to be delightfully theraputic.
Peggy Noonan was last seen trying to crawl into he own anal cavity in search of some perspective. The cavernous confines of that nasty region are best lit by blowtorch. Now having discovered that the shadows on the cave walls are but her own machinations, she proceeds to draft her next screed about the fictitious characters ruminating in her lower GI tract thinking all the while that this will have some bearing on the future course of humanity.
I ask that we let her persist indefinitely in this task as it seems to be her ultimate destiny. We may now go about our lives with her none the wiser.

Oh, I know that's the hope but I don't see them letting that happen. Ever. They loathe the woman and I just don't see it as anything but a lose lose for her. If I thought there was a shred of hope that she would be allowed to make a good impression-I'd be all for it. I just don't see it happening. The hatred for her is, almost unbelievably, greater than even Bush. I just cringe at the thought of her in front of a psychotic NY crowd.

Aristophanic commentary is everywhere or so it seems. [referencing obscure and unreferenceable discussions on the "The Clouds" and other works by Socrates's contemporary critic.]

Did you read her WSJ column? She is lost in the worst sort of "What Would Reagan Do?" reverie, and she assumes that truth is found in stump speeches and not in reality. If she were merely critiquing Sarah Palin's speechwriters or speaking style, that would be one thing. Going beyond that to say that since Palin's speeches don't inspire her, Palin must be hollow and clueless, is foolishness.

There's always chowdah!
It's not a given. Tampa was up 7-0 with a mere 9 outs to go in order to advance to the world series when the Rays bullpen simply self-immolated. Boston needs to win two more games at Tampa Bay in order to advance to the World Series, but some would say that's impossible. Then again, some would say scoring eight unearned runs starting at the bottom of the 7th (against a team that never gave up more than a 3-run lead at any point this season) is impossible as well. Yet it happened tonight....Mr. T pities the fool who left early for that one.

IDF may buy fewer F-35 jets due to world crisis is misleading, unless the ‘world crisis’ is also meant to cover the very real possibility of a deterioration leading to a breakdown in our trans-Atlantic alliance, Nato - a project the Russian’s are pushing real damned hard.
The IDF will need to reevaluate its procurement of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) in light of the global economic crisis, as cracks appearing in the coalition producing the plane could push up the price of the jet.
This is a problem which has been developing for quite some time which will result in a situation - by 2014, I believe - where US and Euro forces, "will not even be able to fight on the same battlefield."
There is a huge and growing technological gap between European and U.S. forces. Europe's equipment is outdated and increasingly incompatible with America's high-tech systems. The Europeans lack strategic transport and logistical and intelligence support.

Oh...a little more news as it concerns our Russian pals. They definitely aren't done with Georgia and have begun setting the stage on the information battleground in preparation: Georgian Threat to Moscow Uncovered
A terrorist war may break out in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi, Izvestia newspaper wrote today. The publication has in its possession copies of telegrams sent to all Moscow police divisions stating that Georgian radical patriotic groups are threatening Russians. “According to information obtained,” the newspaper quotes, “Georgian special services are preparing to blow up residential buildings in St. Petersburg and Sochi.
The 'one' better start practicing his C-in-C rhetoric if he really thinks he's going to win. It'd certainly be ironic if our 'piece' candidate discovered we were at war in the first few months of office - gawd what a gruesome thought.

Forgive me for linking the hell out of this, but upon further examination I noticed something when I took a closer look at this CBC video of Don Cherry from Nov 11th 2006.
The video is what it is- a sports figure & TV personality setting aside time on his show to show his heartfelt thanks for his countrymen who shall never return home (nothing new for Grapes). Even the comments are overwhelmingly supportive.
However, I noticed something fairly insidious....or I should say, I noticed the lack of something insidious. If this was some sort of tribute to American soldiers killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, there would be a whole slew of 'dumb, racist redneck GIs die for Bush's oil war' or 'Imperialist American Soldiers Massacre Innocent Afghans' loose-change type video in the 'Related Videos' column to the right. Not to mention the majority of the comments would be downright rude, vindictive and nasty. The most off-line links I can find in the 'Related Videos' section for this one is clips from another NHL game.
I can't help but shake the feeling that the comments from this one are relatively free of the hateful spam or way off-base 'Related Videos' links because either A) It's honoring the dead from the war in Afghanistan; the only post 9/11 war the lefties consider 'just' or B) the video honors fallen Canadians....America's enemies can't seem to pass an opportunity to kick her while she's down. There seems to be some ambiguity with that regarding the Canucks- even if they are fighting alongside with the Americans.
Having said that, I found it quite moving (3:46 in- when properly used, bagpipes have that effect on me) and I find myself wondering how come an American network couldn't put something like that together during halftime/intermission of a major sporting event. I mean they gave 0bama a freakin' 1/2 hour infomercial before the World Series for f*cks sake!

Mate, that has been one of the secrets of the American military success. The right forces and resources at the right spot. But logistics has been overshadowed by American troops competency in urban fighting. No one imagined that American troops and tactics could result in so few civilian causalities in an urban battle. What America accomplished in Iraq is unprecedented in military history, securing an urban area whilst preserving the civilian population. American troops have died, due to stringent ROE that kept the civilian casualties low. Smart bombs and shells have done their part, but the skill of the American infantryman has turned the tide in Iraq! Haaar!

Moonbats from coast to coast are going absolutely apoplectic over my "Big Blunder" essay. Following the lead of Andrew Sullivan, Think Progress and other top leftie bloggers, a jillion lesser pundits are linking to my essay and frothing at the mouth. The post by this random blogger is typical:
I was very puzzled by how exactly to react to this essay because it is atypical in a number of ways. It is very polite and seemingly well-reasoned. It is very long and utilizes theories of behavioral science that, at first glance, seem totally valid. It even, for a moment made me think that maybe this guy's got a point. Maybe McCain IS secretly ahead, but the leftists who have infiltrated the media and every polling center in the country are actually perpetuating an alternate reality, and on election day we will be very surprised. And then I realized, oh right that's completely batshit insane you dumb fucker.SEE? And that's the sort of thing I wanted to avoid, because he never called me a dumb fucker and I wanted to be polite. But I cannot be polite because you, you fucker, are a big dummie and you are so full of shit that giant dung beetles from Giant Dung Beetle Island are going to roll you until you are a perfectly concentric little ball and then they will build things with you.
The theory is basically an updated Bradley effect thing with a slice of Liberal Media Bias on the side. People are afraid to admit they secretly hate Obama because they're ashamed to think the pollsters will think they're racist, so they pretend they're cool to impress their friends, because everybody else is doing it so they should. And then, after peer pressure to pretend they like Obama...SMOKING.
He fails to explain how this same liberal empire used these same evil liberal empire practices to accurately reflect the massacre the GOP suffered in the 2006 elections. I guess voters had a liberal bias then, too. Oh God, WHAT IF I'M ACTUALLY A CONSERVATIVE, BUT I'M INFECTED WITH LIBERAL BIAS? Will they deprogram me, like when I used to be gay?

It's not illegal for non-Americans to own property here, I don't think. (I remember an LGFer - ProBushCanuck, and whatever happened to him!? - ran to buy property here when the dollar first tanked.) So "fraudulent" either has to refer to mortgages held by illegal aliens (in which case it's a misnomer) or mortgages gained somehow by fraud.

Yaar mate, from what I understand, they are doing a better of job of keeping up their mortgage payments than American citizens. This doesn't make up for the fact they are criminals in search of a better life. The fact remains that Mexico is their country of birth and provides near zero services for their citizens, hence the big American immigration movement.

Hiya, Goddess (heart)
I'm well enough. How's by you? How are the kids?
I lurk around most days, but comment little.
Any idea what people mean when they talk about a "fraudulent mortgage"?
There is the actual legal meaning, which is a mortgage established by fraud on the part of either the lender or borrower, in which case such a mortgage (contract) would be null and void.
And there's the recent application of the term to mortgages obtained by a borrower on a second property when the borrower secretly knows he intends to walk away from his mortgage on his first property. That's not a "fraudulent mortgage," per se,
But the term "fraudulent mortgage" seems to often be used not meaning either of those situations. So, I'm wondering what DOES it mean in those cases?
Since this is just a non-specific, non-legal usage by the general public, then what the public UNDERSTANDS the term to mean IS its meaning.
Any ideas? Anybody?

Oh, it's definitely not illegal for foreigners to own property in the US. And not even for what used to be known as illegal alilens to own property. And you're right that such a misunderstanding would be a misuse of the term.
But it has SOME meaning, because people use it to mean SOMETHING.
You know, it's like the term "frivolous lawsuit." That always bothers me. A truly "frivolous" lawsuit would be thrown out of court immediately by the judge on the grounds of lacking any legitimate complaint or having no legal grounds. Not only would the case get dismissed, but the attorney who brought it would be sanctioned by the court, for having wasted the court's time.
Consequently, true "frivolous lawsuits" are very rarely attempted, and certainly not on a contingent basis (where the attorney only gets paid if he wins). There are some surely, but few attorneys SO STUPID.
But people often refer to "frivolous lawsuits" when what they mean is lawsuits on very minor matters or suits that they personally don't approve of.
(I know. I'm picky-picky.)
And............ Good morning, {littleoldlady}

Morning, Lizards.
Thunderball has probably the strangest history of all the 007 books and novels. In 1963, Eon Productions (no relation- well, not exactly) contracted with Fleming for a movie script that he would also turn into a novel, much as Arthur C. Clarke would later do with 2001; A Space Odyssey and Isaac Asimov would do with Fantastic Voyage. The actual story was written by Fleming, Kevin McClory, and Jack Whittingham, with the screenplay by Richard Mainbaum and John Hopkins. The novel was published simultaneously with the movie's release, and to this day there's a debate in the 007 fan community about whether or not the novel is in fact a "novelization" of the movie, or an "authentic" 007 novel that just happened to be made into a movie at the same time.
Thunderball also was the centerpiece of the contract dispute between Kevin McClory and Eon Productions regarding intellectual property rights, which resulted in the 1983 Warner Brothers 007 movie, Never Say Never Again, with Sean Connery playing 007 for the last time. Pre-production on the film began exactly one day after the lapse of a "grace period" written into the court settlement in 1966, which stipulated that McClory could not "make use" of the story for 15 years after the settlement. It ended up being released the same year as the "official" Eon 007 film, Octopussy, starring Roger Moore. (IMHO, as a "pure" 007 film, NSNA is the better of the two.) It is also one of only two 007 movies ever made "outside" of Eon, the other being the 1967 spoof version of Casino Royale, made by Columbia Pictures. Which incidentally gets my vote for the worst "007" movie ever made- even the 1954 CBS Climax Mystery Theater TV production was better.
cheers
eon

How many actually tried to refute your assertions, rather than just engage in ad hominem attacks? I'd wager a very low percentage.
Oh, they're doing that too, but about 90% of the attempted refutations are totally bizarre and miss the point. About 10% do point out actual deficiencies (mainly in documentary evidence supporting various assertions), deficiencies which I already knew about -- and which I simply didn't have time to rectify. As I said when I first posted the essay here: I know it's kind of a mess, and it doesn't have nearly the number of links/"proofs" that I would have liked, because I just needed to wrap it up quickly and slap it online before the debate (and because I had to attend to real-world responsibilities). So the moonbats are mocking various unsupported claims I make, like "the media has a left-wing bias," which they think is hilarious -- since we all know the media has a right-wing bias! Then they like pointing to every poll they can dig up from the past that ended up being proved accurate on election day. Etc.
I don't mind. I'll stand here and take their water-balloons to the face all day. The vast majority of them didn't even understand the point of the article. If I can get 10,000 moonbats to waste their hours arguing about my essay, then I'd say it was worth the effort!

When a moonbat starts with the cuss words and personal attacks, it's really just their childish way of surrendering. Think of a toddler stomping his feet and simply crying "No! No! No!"

Zombie, I have to tell you what a fine writer you are. I am often dismayed by the poor usage and grammar in internet writing, and your essay was truly a work of art.
Just imagine how good it would have been if I had taken the time to proofread it or edit it! I basically just started typing as fast as I could and eventually just had to quickly throw it online in a half-finished state, unedited, because I ran out of time. To be perfectly honest, I'm a little embarrassed by it! But that's the nature of internet writing -- speed and timeliness are more important than perfection. Many of the leftist criticisms of it say things like "Where are the footnotes?" and "This would be rejected by a PhD thesis committee" and so on.

re: #548 littleoldlady
You are so old fashioned, nonic! You think words actually have to MEAN something?! Not anymore. Not in America. For example, define TAX CUT...
:-/
Good morning, littleoldlady. :-)
Cutting the rate of increase as Reagan did qualifies, but he called it just that, while the Dems were decrying "cuts that will hurt the most vulnerable among us" (probably meaning their pet projects and earmarks, like a shark census in Idaho).
Bill Clinton called his tax on dead people first a "tax cut for those who really need it" (like who- people who don't die?), and then "a tax only on those who can afford it" (defined as "Anyone who didn't contribute to my campaign").
Apparently, the only thing that is never referred to as a tax cut is.... an actual reduction in taxes.
Probably because it hasn't been seen since 1863, when the Constitution was amended to allow taxation of personal income in the first place. Which shows that the first generation of American leaders not old enough to remember life under the British Crown had clearly forgotten why the Constitution prohibited such taxation in the first place. Because it was used not just as a means of raising revenue, but as a weapon of social control to punish and/or impede those who the government wished to prevent from having an effective voice in government.
Which is pretty much how it is used today. Along with actual "social engineering", of course.
Which is why you will never hear a Democrat "progressive" saying that taxes can be cut, under any circumstances. They aren't about to let go of the whip.
/Which, equally of course, means that Obama is lying through his teeth- quelle surprise'.
cheers

HONOLULU – Hawaii is dropping the only state universal child health care program in the country just seven months after it launched.
Gov. Linda Lingle's administration cited budget shortfalls and other available health care options for eliminating funding for the program. A state official said families were dropping private coverage so their children would be eligible for the subsidized plan.
"People who were already able to afford health care began to stop paying for it so they could get it for free," said Dr. Kenny Fink, the administrator for Med-QUEST at the Department of Human Services. "I don't believe that was the intent of the program."
Sure, we should privatize healthcare. Sure, why not.

re: #589 larado
obama will lead you lot to ruin
Not if we can help it. Because he's going to lose the election.
Ask any Democratic Party bigwig when they're not in front of a camera- they're sweating bullets, especially over the latest Gallup numbers. They see 1972 and 1980 all over again, with their candidate's favorables dropping like a rock every day. The conventional wisdom is that if a liberal Dem isn't at least 14 points ahead of his "evil" Republican opponent by the middle of October, it's Game Over.
Once you get past the polls skewed by inadequate methods (like the phone polls which categorized voters on their stands on issues, instead of just asking them,"who are you going to vote for?"), and deliberate sabotage (like the CNN and other online polls "pwned" by the Koslings and DUmmies), in actual, more-or-less reliable polls, especially here in the Midwest (which any candidate needs to win), Obama has never broken out of single digits versus McCain. And his single-digit "leads" dropped to within the margin of error after Palin was tapped as McCain's running mate. (In liberal-speak, "within the margin of error" in the U.S. equates to "we're screwed".)
Obama's biggest problem, though, is his supporters. A column on RCP this morning, regarding Obama's "spread the wealth around" Freudian slip, elicited this response from an Obamatron;
We're going to win in a landslide, so you all better just bolt your doors and stay inside for four years. And even then, we're coming after you!
First rule of American politics; The American voter has a very low tolerance for arrogant pricks, whether they be a candidate or his water carriers. Obama and his supporters have raised malignant narcissism to a level not seen in this country since Huey P. Long. And I predict that they will pay for it, at the polls, on November 4th.
Have to run. Have a great day, Lizards.
cheers

Here's a random observation; perhaps someone with more knowledge of such things can look into it.
I logged on this morning and checked stock futures; at ~6:00 am EDT, the Dow futures were about 200 points down. A half-hour later they had bounced off their lows and had advanced to around 100 points down.
At 8:00 am, CNN led with a headline "Stocks Ready To Dive," claiming that the bottom was about to fall out of the market once again. A check of the futures showed that the NASDAQ, the Dow and the S&P 500 had all hit their lows around 6:00 am and had been advancing steadily upward since then, with the Dow futures currently at 70 points down and following an upward trend.
I'm certainly not going to try to predict what the markets will do, but this level of futures by itself is small compared to recent days, and the trendline is headed in a positive direction, not a negative one. Why such alarmist headlines? Are the media now engaged in a deliberate attempt to panic the stock markets, driving prices even lower in hopes of exacerbating an economic crisis that favors a certain political party? God forbid that we should go into the weekend in positive territory this close to the election.
Pessimism over the market's behavior is certainly warranted these days. But this sort of reporting seems to be explicitly ignoring what facts there are in favor of generating hysteria. The market is twitchy as hell right now, and even tiny bits of bad news can send it spiraling.
Anyone with enough economic chops to look into this? I'd also like someone to explain the huge increases in volatility we've been seeing the last couple of weeks; it seems unlikely that there is that much change in bid and ask coming simply from ordinary investors, or even from institutional ones. Who else is at play here, and is there deliberate manipulation taking place?

Compared to most countries our government stays out of our lives to a degree that people feel that who is in charge doesn't really matter. Top of the Morning Lizards,
McCain is coming to Melbourne, FL today. The tickets flew out of GOP headquarters like my tax dollars from a Democrat's hands. I was in a conference call at work while tickets were being handed out the other day otherwise I'd be heading on over. They have gone through a tremendous amount of signs and bumper stickers and rumor has it some RP supporters had obtained large numbers of signs to destroy so they are now limiting people to only 2 signs or bumper stickers per person.
Still seeing about 50/50 Obama/McCain signs around the County, with 1 RP sign sighting. Union workers at some municipalities are looking forward to increased welfare, and I am still mystified to see Obama signs on multi million dollar houses. I have been campaigning for a local council seat myself, and have noticed that the majority of people I've talked with have been positive, but those few that looked like they were weaned on a sour pickle had Obama signs in the yard.
It is purely anecdotal evidence, but it seems like most of the unhappy people I've encountered are Democrats. Is it because unhappy people gravitate towards the Dem side, or is it the 'indoctrination' and propaganda spewed by the ultra Left that slowly poisons them?
Something else I've noticed...a lot of folks have already voted via absentee ballot and we can expect a high voter turnout (without counting the acorns that have dropped from the Obama Oak Tree).
I sure hope Saracuda and McCain drive home the fact that it was the Dems in congress responsible for the fiscal meltdown and not Bush failed policies....heck, I'd like to hear them put O on the spot and ask him to name One failed policy.

I honestly think it's a case of one feeding the other. It's a self-selected group that consciously reinforces its own nihilism and paranoia.

I think it's partly because people assume the Rs won't put a woman in a major national office - you know, 'cuz we're sexist troglodytes.
She did note that SP is very intelligent and articulate. BTW, she's from a liberal Connecticut background like me (we knew each other back in high school) and works as an artist, so she's inundated with lefty rhetoric - but she doesn't drink the kool-aid herself.

in 48 hours Joe the plumber has been vetted to a greater extent than The One. This is a guy who was playing catch with his son in his front yard when Obama strolls by. Joe was able to ask a simple straight forward question that revealed more about Obamanomics than anything the MSM has done, or anything to come out of the debates either, and for doing that Joe is pilloried and given a complete anal exam from the media. These people are despicable and evil.

I am awake, exhilarated, and exhausted. I couldn't sleep for a good hour after that game. They never make it easy but you can't count them out. If they've got two more in them I will be in Asia for the entire World Series on business. Watching them in the World Series at 8 in the morning (and without beer) will be strange indeed.
But there is still a long way to go until that becomes an issue.

Actually it's amazing how much we have in common. She thinks a lot like me except she's smarter. She doesn't follow politics closely just because it's not a majore interest for her like it is for me - also I think because she's gotten burned out on lefty anti-Americanism.
When we do talk politics, though, she is amazingly astute. She's extremely intelligent both intellectually and in "people smarts". We talked a little about identity politics the other day, and she immediately understood what I meant when I said the Ds think they "own" women's and minority votes. She "gets" neoconservatism intuitively. We talked about Israel - she said she thought Israel was a liberal cause, I said it used to be, but the Arabs and leftists manipulated the Palestinian issue ... I didn't even have to finish the explanation, because she finished it for me. That's what I mean - she catches on fast.
Her friends think she's become "brainwashed" by our relationship but actually she was already moving away from left-liberalism before we got involved - like I say, she'd gotten turned off by the anti-American tone of the whole program.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that the media and the left (but I repeat myself) are busy trying to destroy Joe the Plumber. They'll carp that he's unlicensed (not required for residential work in OH strangely enough), has tax liens, say that it's not his real name (he's going by his middle name), and it all points to how anyone can dare question Obama's intentions or expose that he's a socialist in word and deed.
Joe is now being vetted by the media in ways that they haven't done to Obama or his staffers.
After all, how is it that one of Obama's staffers has tax liens in multiple states? The media isn't nearly as curious as to Obama's ties to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, despite calling on Raines and Johnson - and Johnson was on his VP search selection committee.
