AP's Puff Piece on Louis Farrakhan

US News | Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:33:47 am PDT

Here’s a very sympathetic article from the Associated Press about one of the most hateful figures on the American scene: Farrakhan says ‘new beginning’ for Nation of Islam.

CHICAGO – The Nation of Islam, a secretive movement generally closed to outsiders, has planned a rare open-to-the public event at its Chicago-based headquarters in what the Minister Louis Farrakhan deemed a “new beginning” for the group.

Hundreds of religious leaders of different faiths have been invited to the event planned for Sunday, a rededication of the group’s historic Mosque Maryam on the city’s South Side. Farrakhan is scheduled to speak.

“We have restored Mosque Maryam completely, and we will dedicate it to the universal message of Islam, and the universal aspect of the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad,” Farrakhan said in an invitation letter. “It represents for the Nation of Islam, a new beginning.” ...

“It is a very conscious effort to open the mosque up to the community and to rededicate the community to learning about Islam,” said Aminah McCloud, a professor of Islamic studies at DePaul University. “Previously, the Nation has been open to people coming to visit it, but its members don’t generally go anywhere else ... now there is a concerted effort.”

Here’s how AP writer Sophia Tareen describes Farrakhan’s notoriously virulent antisemitism:

In February, Farrakhan appeared at an annual Saviours’ Day event in Chicago and called Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama the “hope of the entire world” that the U.S. will change for the better. The Obama campaign quickly denounced Farrakhan’s support, because of past comments about Jews that many have called offensive.

Interesting how the Associated Press presumes to speak for the Obama campaign.

Not comments that were offensive but that many have called offensive. Typical LLL PC bullshit.

“It is a very conscious effort to open the mosque up to the community and to rededicate the community to learning about Islam,” said Aminah McCloud

It sounds as if McCloud thinks that the community doesn't have a choice about what it will learn.

I wonder. Do the "hundreds of religious leaders of different faiths" that have been "invited" to attend the Nation or Islam event include Sunni or Shia Muslim leaders? (The invitations to Jewish leaders were probably lost in the mail.)

Perhaps this represents a new ecumenical direction for the NOI.

In February, Farrakhan appeared at an annual Saviours’ Day event in Chicago and called Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama the “hope of the entire world” that the U.S. will change for the better.

Obama is Farrakhan's hope and welcomed change.

History may say many things about this election, and what awaits us if Obama becomes President, but no future historian will ever dare write that we were not warned.

35 LaMano  Sat, Oct 18, 2008 11:56:02am

Birds of a feather. You think Obama/Ayers is bad.

36 Sunlight  Sat, Oct 18, 2008 11:56:10am

OK so. The left-addicted Jewish organizations (URJ, Conservative, etc.) right now are buying the Obama campaign's hinting that they will keep Farrakhan, Wright, Ayres, etc. out of the government. If Obama gets elected and brings in these type people or their clones, then I would say the lefty Jewish organizations will join those guys who attend Iranian anti-Israel events and cheer for Iran's nuclear plans for Israel as enemies of the Jewish people. Here we are in the best set up the Jews have ever had on the planet and these organizations are prepared to foul it.

37 vagabond trader  Sat, Oct 18, 2008 11:56:17am

I've got a friend whose first husband was NOI. She doesn't talk much about it, but what she does say is chilling.
Not too surprisingly, she is abandoning her usual support of the Democrat ticket this year to become one of the 4% or so of blacks who will vote for McCain.
She is a welfare-state liberal, BTW, and joked to me last week about how this would probably be the first and last time the two of us would be on the same side politically.

48 Syrah  Sat, Oct 18, 2008 12:00:35pm

In a sane world, a Calypso Louie endorsement would have been an anathema to any mainstream candidate.

That, and many other things, some big and some small, reveal what is at the core of Obama's campaign.

Not present, or at least not singing the National Anthem at the rally was Londonderry senior Zach Bencal.

Bencal, who sings the anthem for a number of school events and is actively involved in local community theatre, had been contacted by the Obama campaign to sing the anthem. He agreed to do so, then was told later in the evening the anthem had been scratched from the program. Bencal said he was told by the campaign the decision was a simple programming change to make room for another speaker.

"I guess it just wasn't meant to be," Bencal said.

Sandra Abrevaya, communications director for the Obama campaign's Manchester office, confirmed the choice had simply been a last-minute scratch from the rally's program, which included the Pledge of Allegiance.

"We regret the miscommunication with Zach about today's event but we are pleased that several other New Hampshire residents were able to speak at today's event, where thousands of voters in both parties gathered to hear Sen. Obama discuss his plan to bring the change we need to Washington."

Obama and his friends went to the Million Man March in Washington, DC in 1995 to celebrate Farrahkan.

(At the time, I picked up from the airport and housed an African friend who flew in to DC to attend this nutroots event)

Now Farrakhan's friends want to march into the White House & gut America of what makes it great--individuals living their own lives, not spending all day figuring out how to get back at The Man.

76 Metal Man  Sat, Oct 18, 2008 12:11:10pm

Oddly enough this was also probably what people in Germany read in the 30s. Replace Nazi party with Nation of Islam, Mosque with beer hall* and Farrakhan with Hitler the article reads the same appeasement to evil that history chronicles from that time.

There is an Economics Primer titled The Alpha Strategy, written by Pugsley, that references PIE similes to teach the basic foundations of trade and valuation. It's a standard text on the free trade market.
Maybe he tried to memorized it and was having an instant playback glitch. He seemed to lose the relevancy of his explanation and could never find it again.
PIE he did remember.
By the way, the book is a good read for any capitalist.

88 rawmuse  Sat, Oct 18, 2008 12:15:50pm

Possibly the most informative local (Oakland, CA) NOI enterprise is the "Your Black Muslim Bakery" saga. The usual capers, underage marriages, grants from Ron Dellums. Also some spectacular instances where the bow tied gangs would enter liquor stores with crowbars, smashing the place up. Finally the press got too nosy, in the form of an Oakland Trib reporter, a black man, who was killed by shotgun in his own driveway by a NOI member.

These are just lovely people, really.

I still can't get over that Farrakan, Ayers, Rezko, and Obama all hail from the same neighborhood. what a delightful little area that must be

Elijah Muhammad House, 4855 S Woodlawn Ave. The former home of Elijah Muhammad, the founder of the Nation of Islam, and the home to the NoI's current firebrand leader, Louis Farrakhan. Check out the beautiful stained glass windows, as well as all the N.O.I. security!

Masjid Al-Faatir, 1200 E 47th St, ☎ +1 773 548-3524 (info@masjidal-faatir.com), [4]. Masjid Al-Faatir is the largest and most impressive of Chicago's 20 African-American mosques. It was built in 1987 by one of Elijah Muhammad's sons

Operation Push HQ, 930 E 50th St, ☎ +1 773 373-3366 (fax: +1 773 373-3571), [5]. The enormous classical revival building at 50th & Drexel is the national headquarters of Jesse Jackson's RainbowPUSH organization.

The Obama House, 5046 Greenwood Ave (right across the street from KAMII). This pretty house is home to the Obama family of the current Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama. It's the last house on the right heading south on Greenwood (one-way). The vacant lot to the left was the source of minor controversy in Chicago, when it came out that the Obama family had received it at sub-market rates from friend and criminal real estate broker Tony Rezko. You'll notice, despite the much touted media characterizations of their house as a "Hyde Park white-porticoed mansion," it's not actually in Hyde Park, and while a nice big house, it's no mansion. While they are still living here, though, it is not wise to hang around taking photographs — the street is crawling with Secret Service, who have set up a permanent roadblock preventing cars from getting through to 51st St.

The MSM, particularly the TV news, still has the power to move the fuzzy middle. What is given attention by them exists, what is ignored does not exist. To deny their power is foolhardy.

re: #88 rawmuse

Possibly the most informative local (Oakland, CA) NOI enterprise is the "Your Black Muslim Bakery" saga. The usual capers, underage marriages, grants from Ron Dellums. Also some spectacular instances where the bow tied gangs would enter liquor stores with crowbars, smashing the place up. Finally the press got too nosy, in the form of an Oakland Trib reporter, a black man, who was killed by shotgun in his own driveway by a NOI member.

These are just lovely people, really.

I've recently read 'Radical Son' by David Horowitz.
Good descriptions of how it all started, Black Panthers etc included ...
And frightening hints about how these leftie thoughts and careers literally run in families, for generations ...

Dear Charles
You probably don’t like to post rumors but the msm has been on a rant to
Destroy Joe just for asking one question all of us Joe’s wanted to know. In one brief answer Obama realized our worst nightmare the death of the American dream; aspire better for ourselves and children. So as to Bill Ayers babysitting for Obama’s and apparent redezvous Sen. Edwards style, is it true? Why are these questions not asked? He is a public figure who is running for the highest office of our country it is relevant. Is it more relevant to destroy Joe? Look if all cards are on the table and we lose so be it, Doesn’t mean I stop fighting for what I believe in. If you have info please release it, we all know msm won’t.

4. We want our people in America whose parents or grandparents were descendants from slaves, to be allowed to establish a separate state or territory of their own--either on this continent or elsewhere. We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to provide such land and that the area must be fertile and minerally rich. We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to maintain and supply our needs in this separate territory for the next 20 to 25 years--until we are able to produce and supply our own needs.

the universal aspect of the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad

From my reading of The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley the main tenant of Elijah Muhammad's teachings was "the white man is the devil". When Malcolm X made the Hajj to Mecca he found out how screwed up the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's view of Islam was. After exposing the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's philandering the Honorable Elijah Muhammad had Malcolm's house bombed and then the Honorable Elijah Muhammad had Malcolm killed.

5. We want freedom for all Believers of Islam now held in federal prisons. We want every black man and woman to have the freedom to accept or reject being separated from the slave master's children and establish a land of their own.

7. WE BELIEVE this is the time in history for the separation of the so-called Negroes and the so-called white Americans. We believe the black man should be freed in name as well as in fact. By this we mean that he should be freed from the names imposed upon him by his former slave masters. Names which identified him as being the slave master's slave. We believe that if we are free indeed, we should go in our own people's names--the black people of the Earth.
(snip)
9. WE BELIEVE that the offer of integration is hypocritical and is made by those who are trying to deceive the black peoples into believing that their 400-year-old open enemies of freedom, justice and equality are, all of a sudden, their "friends." Furthermore, we believe that such deception is intended to prevent black people from realizing that the time in history has arrived for the separation from the whites of this nation.

And Senator Government still has not disassociated himself from this group.

I think there are many more people like your friend out there.

Koskidz embrace moral inversion; hate plumbers, love terrorists......
"anti-American Cleric Al Sadr", like "Joe the Plumber"

By now we've all heard that McCain's "Joe the Plumber":

* isn't a licensed plumber
* won't pay more under Obama's tax plan
* his business doesn't earn close to $250K/year
* isn't even named Joe

It reminded me of something, but I couldn't put my finger on it till this morning when 30,000 demonstrated in Baghdad against the US occupation, with the enouragement of the man inevitably described in US media as "anti-American cleric Moqtada Al Sadr". So this might be the perfect time to point out that Al Sadr:

* is not anti-American
* is not a cleric
* is strongly pro-democracy
* led the unilateral cease fire that's made Iraq more peaceful, saving American lives

....
Don't worry; when Moqtada Al Sadr is elected in Iraq, I'm certain that with help from US President Obama he will find a non-violent, diplomatic way to export free speech and democracy to his fellow peace-loving, videogame-loving, anti-occupation peers in the USA.

Just in case you might be thinking this has to be a fake and that progressives aren't really this stupid: He's a real koskid

Somewhat OT: Muslim student charged with faking attack

This always gets me. Most of the time, it's taken as complete truth when a Muslim or other minority claims to be victimized (remember all the fake noose incidents) and without any investigation or proof, there's a big protest. Who the hell were they protesting? Some unknown whom they've found guilty until proven innocent.

The report of an attack on Jilani on Oct. 9 triggered an hourlong lockdown at the 3,300-student private college and prompted hundreds of students to protest the incident at a rally the next day. The college also offered security escorts to about 30 Muslim students.

School officials had no comment Friday.

re: #162 Outrider

They don't want much. This is one thing they want:
4. We want our people in America whose parents or grandparents were descendants from slaves, to be allowed to establish a separate state or territory of their own--either on this continent or elsewhere.

Does that include all the Jews, who were enslaved in Egypt?
/Somehow I think not.

We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to provide such land and that the area must be fertile and minerally rich. We believe that our former slave masters are obligated to maintain and supply our needs in this separate territory for the next 20 to 25 years--until we are able to produce and supply our own needs.

I'm all for this idea.
Let all the disaffected slave descendants leave the country and set up their own country, anywhere they can find satisfactory. Farrakhan should lead by example and set up the colony personally.
Then, have anyone who has ever owned a slave during such time that slavery was legal in the USA, pay for it.
/I'm sure there are a lot of 160 year old former slaveholders eager to chip in.

They're just playing it safe. After all, with a Farrakhanesque radical close to taking the helm, and with newspaper sales slumping at unprecedented rates - is it any wonder that they're pandering to the base so soon? These newspapers are failing at record rates and they're now resorting to borderline Weekly World News "pabulum" to make a sale. Good news and stability doesn't sell a story - bad news, drama and hyperbole do.

People often say that the media has finally lost it, but I don't think that they ever had "it" to begin with. I often wonder how world events might have played out if there was an actual voice of opposition to the media getting any real headway.

Ask yourself, how would the Vietnam War have played out if there was a Littlegreenfootballs or Hotair or Pajamas Media around to counter the leftist media? Would we have stopped at the 38th parallel? The internet and talk radio provided the counter balance that we needed for so long. It's like Ann Coulter said, back in the day when you watched the talking heads and suits on television you'd see a moderate democrat and a radical liberal hashing it out.

Notwithstanding the fact that American slavery ended more than 50 years before Farrakhan was born, and that 360,000 Union soldiers gave their lives to end it (ie more American soldiers than died in the second World War), I didn't know "Whitey" was still forcing names on "so-called Negroes" anymore.

You follow that logic all the way, and pretty soon we should have no whites or blacks on this continent at all, because Whitey stole this land from the Natives. And then you'd have to say that the Crow stole land from the Blackfoot, which the blackfoot stole when they murdered all the Arapahoe....and on and on.

It is one of the grim realities of history that there is not one inch of ground on Earth that does not have 6 or 7 layers at least of blood from some group and then another and another that dominated and wiped out their neighbors.

Liberals hate reality because they always find themselves cracking their skulls on it when they try to get everything for free.

My understanding is that the Doctor Strangelove character is a composite of several people: Werner Von Braun and/or other Nazi rocket scientists, Dr. Edward Teller, Henry Kissinger, and Herman Kahn of the Hudson Institute who did several studies about nuclear warfare strategy in the 1960's and was a vigorous advocate of civil defense programs who argued that with the proper planning it was possible to survive and win a nuclear war.

Too true - there was a lot of it around, and it won't get any better before 11/4, I don't think.

Gotta keep laughing!

Gotta keep positive too! We have to win on November 4!

I'm pretty sure that's a portrait of Frederick Douglass and John Brown.
Ayers may think he's a latter day reincarnation of John Brown.

William C. Ayers is a distinguished professor

Distinguished my ass.

The only distinguishing feature about him is that he's a America-hating terrorist who should be in prison at the minimum and worse if we still knew what treason was.

Watching Obama on CNN right now speaking in Toledo OH earlier today. Behind him are three US flags. No, wait a sec, make that one US flag, and two other "stars & stripes" with a big "O" where the stars should be.

Man, the hubris and arrogance this guy breeds is amazing.

Did it look anything like this?

Hitler changed the flag when he came to power, too.

That's the Ohio state flag.

ok - looks like the Obama flag is actually the state of Ohio flag.

But he did change the Presidential seal with some freaky Obama logo, so why would this have surprised me?

what is the difference between payroll taxes and income taxes?

One applies to a company, the other to an individual.
I think. (Not a CPA)

Payroll taxes are part (for most of us the largest part) of total income tax.
Other income from interest, gifts, rental property, etc. adds to the total, overall taxed by "income tax."

Mike Wallace: Can you think of a more corrupt nation?
Farrakhan: ...I'm living in one.

This Sunday -
Farrakhan: For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud...

re: #36 Sunlight

This is why "Joe" Lieberman is backing John McCain...
I have tried and tried to figure out left wing American Jews...still trying...
I am an Irish Catholic and I am a Zionist...still trying to figure out why most American Jews are not...

re: #262 ploome hineni

it's hard to be a JEw

I grew up in NYC in the 60's (Bronx, Jewish neighborhood) and many of my friends are Jewish...and like many of my Jewish friends, several in my family of 4th generation North Eastern Irish Catholic immigrants are democrats as are most of the northeastern Irish Catholics families I remember growing up...(ie: Kennedys, Moynahan, O'Neil, LaHey) so I can understand this (my Dad however was FDNY for 30 years and a 10 year Marine and a Republican)...but the anti-Israel stance of the left wing of the party would turn me to the center-right so fast if I was an American Jew...
NO WAY with good conscience could I support this kind of anti-Semitism in my own party...NO WAY! I don't get it...I really don't...

re: #260 Strike Hornet

Well, I think it's because...

Republicans are "Christians." Or "Radical, fundamentalist, evangelical Christians."

A lot of the leftist Jews I know still carry a great deal of dread of Inquisitions, oppressive Christians from Europe around with them. They actually believe George Bush doesn't care about Israel, but just wants to safeguard it so all the Jews can go back during the Rapture and convert or die when Jesus comes.

As for Islam... they don't know a dang thing. And a lot of them still believe the hocus-pocus that Islam respects "people of the book" and lets them live pretty well, with only a few inconveniences.

I went to a Rosh Hoshana services this year at the UCLA campus (big warning there) and the Rabbi was talking about how Jews under Islam got to live pretty well, while obeying a few Dhimmi laws.

"Jim Crow," I said.

The Rabbi got kind of annoyed, and said: "No, it wasn't Jim Crow... it's true that they were second class citizens, but the Dhimmi Laws were-"

"Jim Crow," I said.

"But under some liberal Muslim rulers, Jews could rise to prominent positions, even viziers."

"Jim Crow," I said.

Finally he admitted it was something like Jim Crow. But I heard he complained to people later about me.

re: #267 Dayenu

I understand the "Republicans are Christians" part...i really do...I grew up hearing about it...
I also can see the quandary for most Jews struggling with this issue...
BUT, we live in a time where the very existence of Israel as a State is in dire jeopardy...I don't think most of the younger "progressives" really think this could ever happen...
Even as an Irish Catholic, I fear it not only can, but will under the secular progressive/socialist/marxist left if they come to unchecked power in '09...

Well, when it comes to Israel, they'll say something like "well, yes, Israel is important, but McCain would outlaw Abortion..."

Then again, I've been to very reformed synagogues... including one in San Francisco (Yeah, I know, I was asking for trouble, but living in post 9/11 San Francisco is how I left my own moonbattery behind). There are actually synagogues that have been so infected by the anti-Israel leftism, that the congregants actually agree not to discuss Israel for the sake of peace. I couldn't believe it when I heard it, but that's Reform Judaism today in a lot of places.

Not that all Reform Jews are anti-Israel, but some of the more out there ones are.

re: #269 ploome hineni

well, since the destruction of Jerusalem, Jews have always been so small a minority

fighting has usually meant suicide..total destruction, so Jews had learned to become invisible, and to tolerate the intolerable

which occurred to me, while studding the history of Europe

even during the Holocaust, Jews in America struggled with antisemitism at home and accusations of taking the USA to war for the Jews

and now, 'neocon' had become a synonym for Jew

remember? neocons who pushed for war

yes...I concur...the left did a good job pushing the "fear the neo-cons" propaganda the past 8 years...
But Obama and the new NEOCOMS coming to unchecked power in all three branches of American government in '09 should truly frighten any Jew and Zionist not only in America, but around the world...
the Neo-Communists need to be fought back both domestically and internationally...they are No-Nazi's dressed in nice clothes and without the skinheads but they are every bit the anti-Semites the Nazi's were...
They have had Europe and now Canada in a stronghold already and are getting ready for the BIG PRIZE in November...

So many of my moonbat friends (both Jewish and Catholic/Christian and male and female) use abortion as their PRIMARY reason for their leftism...
It is just mind-boggling to me...
I have my own deep feeling about abortion, but to me it is not and never will be the reason I vote the way I vote...I know abortion is a dividing issue in our great country, but I still don't get it as the PRIMARY reason for the division...

If OBama wins then:
Louis Farrakhan and James Wright will become the official White House ministers. They will start every state dinner and have complete access to Obama.

Bill Ayers will become the presidents speech writer. Hell, he wrote Obama's biography; who knows him better?

The White House will be trashed of everything Republican. Basketball goals in every room with big screen tvs and monster sound.

The Obama portrait will go everywhere including the dollar bill since Obama mentioned it was a problem.

After reading that nonsense, I wonder what their response would be if a group of whites were to come out with a manifesto that advocated that whites separate themselves from the blacks.
