Sarah Palin on SNL

Humor | Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 10:02:13 am PDT

I confess, I’m a little puzzled at the importance Saturday Night Live is being afforded in this election. SNL hasn’t been relevant, inspired, or even funny for at least ten years, and last night’s skits featuring Sarah Palin were just more of the same tired, over-long schtick they’ve been recycling forever, a comedy show on autopilot. They bash McCain for being old, but it’s SNL that’s the real dinosaur.

Sarah did fine, but the material stank.

UPDATE at 10/19/08 10:29:13 am:

The Associated Press continues to show that they’ve abandoned basic journalistic ethics, with a headline that’s simply mean-spirited: Palin smiles as ‘SNL’ mocks her anew.

bizarre

2 Adrenalyn  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:03:49am

sure, she took it well but they ripped her every direction
and host John Brolin started in on McCain from the opening

3 Adrenalyn  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:04:25am

I bet the net effect was it helped her

but still, fuck NBC

4 x-wing  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:04:59am

This was a slap in the face to every veiwer last night. NBC is dirt to me.

That about sums it up.

6 Adrenalyn  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:05:32am

how COULD she have stood so close to Alec Baldwin

did she ask him hot fat his daughter was ?

SNL jumped the shark many years ago. After watching the show last night I am amazed that those writers get paid at all. Lorne Michaels must give them a cot to sleep on in exchange for their jokes. Anything more than that and he is getting ripped off. The show sucks.

8 Adrenalyn  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:06:45am

I was forced to watch it by the missus

or else I would have to "do without"

next time, celibacy = sanity

9 x-wing  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:07:09am

Did you hear the applause she got in the beginning? That was the most you heard from the audience all night.

I think when you have writers to whom nothing is sacred, then nothing can be really humorous because their are no boundaries to tip toe around.

It's just one big cesspool that the feral political class finds themselves swimming in.

Now John McCain's speech at the Smith dinner was hilarious - I may just watch it again right now.

12 esch  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:10:13am

I have an SNL smell test. If an actor/comedian comes from or has spent significant time on SNL, I avoid them. Carrey was probably the last one that does much of anything I like. Ferrell is probably 20/80 for me. Can't stand Fay/Silverman/Poehler.

13 really grumpy big dog Johnson  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:10:20am

The palpable Palin hatred literally vibrated through the entire show. I quit watching SNL in the seventies, and am ashamed that i even watched the show.

Thank you! That's exactly what I thought when I heard it, and nope, didn't hear any applause as loud during the rest of the show...

which did, in fact, suck. :-)

I was over at Huffpo and the majority thought that she was mocked and dissed by them and she did not even notice. I saw the opposite, Alec Baldwin was like a bloated carcass screaming about how much they hate her. Tina Fey looked like a Wesley, little rat next to her. They became the cartoon and she look like a princess in a pig sty. I thought she did great.

It's all about an attempt at shamless rating grabs.
SNL has been 3rd rate since the 90's. This is a shot in the arm for them.I hope Palin becomes VP just so the look alike SNL comedy sketches will continue.

not that I watch SNL.

24 Lynn B.  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 10:13:16am

In John Ringo's novel "The Last Centurion" there is reference to "The Time of Suckage."

That would begin at 11:30 Eastern Time on Saturday night.

I agree 100% Charles, with your opinion. I was wondering myself about the mental breakdown David Letterman had over McCain's cancellation. He made it sound like the presidency could not be won unless it got his approval. I cant stand Letterman, but, for some reason hubby insists on watching the ass once in a while. I can't help but think, Who the hell does Letterman think he is? The moron really thinks he is the be all to end all. Drives me bonkers.

The Feral Political Class - my new term - which includes those skanky media whores, and all those back-stabbers.

Now I feel better.

Feral explains why liberals turn into red-faced, eye-popping, vein-bulging, spittle spewing tasmanian devils when they feel threatened.

For those of you who didnt' see it yesterday, I posted a rant from a family member who accused me of spreading hate, and reading the Karl Rove playbook. I had sent him an article with data, and also a link to zombie's Up Your Alley street fair.

He became unhinged like a feral cat.

It was a good way for Sarah to diffuse whatever pathetic affect SNL has on anyone. Her appearance on the show basically said "pffft, I'm not taking this crap seriously, why should you?"

Rush Limbaugh said Colin Powell's decision to get behind Barack Obama appeared to be very much tied to Obama's status as the first African-American with a chance to become president.

"Secretary Powell says his endorsement is not about race," Limbaugh wrote in an email. "OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed. I'll let you know what I come up with."

As for Powell's statement of concern this morning about the sort of Supreme Court justices a President McCain might appoint, Limbaugh wrote: "I was also unaware of his dislike for John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy and Antonin Scalia. I guess he also regrets Reagan and Bush making him a four-star [General] and Secretary of State and appointing his son to head the FCC. Yes, let's hear it for transformational figures."

Alaska is absolutely breathtaking. The people are warm and friendly. At the Zoo they go by the honor system, there is a can there that you can pay the entrance fee/or not. The summers are awesome and the winters aren't any worse than what you get in Illinois. It's my dream to retire there.

Well, Zbig says Powell will make a difference ........(Mika is squeeling with delight) .......

***

Brzezinski said he thinks Powell's endorsement to play a major factor in the race. "I was impressed by the comprehensive indictment of the current Republican ticket that was implicit in Powell's statement. It was not just about foreign affairs, it was a comprehensive statement that conveys the message that the more traditionally centrist Republicans are coming to view the McCain-Palin ticket as some sort of deviation -- some sort of break -- with the genuine traditions of the Republican Party."

Brzezinski also rejected the notion, floated by some, that Powell's endorsement could be discounted by undecided white voters as mere "racial solidarity," saying: "Because of his military service, his role in the first Gulf War, his status as a past Secretary of State, it has put him above the racial divide. He's seen more as an elder statesman."

**

If not Zbig himself ..... his son will have a position in a Senator Government administration .....

Haven't read all the posts. Sarah did fine. But I don't think she or any candidate for high office should be on any of these TV shows. Not Leno, Not Letterman, Not Oprah, Not Ellen, not anyone who is in the "entertainment" business.

Here I am elitist. I think news interviews, press conferences, are all OK. I don't want someone on a show where laughs are the main emphasis and putting down a candidate is the real agenda. I think it cheapens the office of the Presidency. If there is a place where a President wouldn't go while he is President, then he shouldn't go there while he is running. I don't care about the argument that the audience wants to see them. Nothing policy-wise is really discussed, only foolish things. And it raises the entertainer to a king/queen maker because we think that Leno or Letterman or Stewart know everything there is to know about running the country.

No, I would rather a more traditional exposure. But then I am old and white so what do I know about anything that doesn't reveal me being out of step and racist.

As for his role in the first Gulf War, it's too bad so few people are aware of how badly he (and a few others) botched that. Had he done his job, there would have been no need for us to go back into Iraq in 03 and the Middle East (not to mention this election) would look very different today. Sadly the phrase "turn the other cheek" has a very concrete social context to the Judea of Christ's time that has gotten lost. The Roman's used to strike the Jew's with the back of their hand which beget a phrase which we still use to this very day. The term is bitch slapping, and it means that the person you are slapping is weak inconsequential and not a social equal.

The act, in Christ's time, of turning your cheek was a demand to be treated as an equal. It said to the person slapping you, OK, you just slapped my like I was a child, woman or a slave, now hit me like I was a man or your equal... If you have the balls to do so...

It was in fact a very aggressive and radical thing to tell his fellow Jew's to do. But sadly it is also a cultural artifact that has gotten mostly lost in our modern world.

I think I've seen every SNL show since the very beginning (sad, but true) and it should go down in the TV books as one of the top three TV shows of all time, IMO. However, I am one of the few SNL fans who thinks the early years are highly overrated. The writers of the '70's shows were totally tokin', smokin' and snortin' their way through their late-night writing sessions. The humor of those skits does not hold up well 30 years later (watch the complete shows from the first three years out on DVD now and judge yourself). Unsophisticated, unthinking drug humour. In many ways however, the hosts of those early years are more intriguing and colorful, in retrospect, than the "TV star of the moment" hosts the show is so in love with now. The casts of the mid-late '80's and the early '90's were more versatile in so many ways compared with the supposed iconic original cast.

After laughing my ass off through countless Clinton and Oprah-spoofing skits in almost every show in the 90's and early 21st century, I find it easy to laugh at both sketches last night featuring Gov Palin. She handled it with the typical humour, aplomb and class we knew she would.

Both Lorne Michaels and Sarah came out winners. Tina Fey was the loser. She is so unattractive compared to Sarah and it showed last night.

I think she did great. the material was better than average SNL, although Alec Baldwin could have rehearsed his lines ahead of time and brought home the "tina fey/sarah palin look-a-like" skit.

The decision to have Amy Polar deliver the Palin rap song was correct -- I don't think anyone thinks THAT was (vice-)presidential, but she benefited from it as if it was her own.

She got to deliver the sign-on line "live from new york, it's ..." and the sign-off for week-end update. Two of the most desired lines in the show.

She gets points with the kids for doing the show -- probably not swaying anyone, although she drops any sort of ideal she is stuffy.

At this point in '04, John Kerry's victory was all but guaranteed in the polls..

I am in a very red state now, but have ties to Michigan which looked like it was in play for a time. Michigan is mostly a red state except the Detroit area and a couple of other counties around the lower part of the state. A blue-collar area that usually goes democratic is full of McCain signs and almost no Obama signs. Much different than the last two elections. Appears that signs were more readily available there. Here we see a few signs, but they are hard to come by from the campaign HQ.

I think a lot of the problem with SNL is the guests. They have skits stockpiled waiting for a host that can pull it off. I think most of these skits are bland and not anything spectacular because it reflects on the people delivering it. I remember reading something about that skit 'canteen boy' where Alec Baldwin, of all people, played the gay boyscout leader. They had that skit written for over two years but never aired it because they never had a guest host that could pull it off. It's like scotch. They've got the good stuff, they're just waiting for a time to pull it out. For everyone who watched it last night, the highlights of that show are those two clips Charles has embedded. Why? Because they were the only two where they had a guest who could pull it off. That's credit to Sarah Palin, Mark Walberg, and Alec Baldwin. Notice, no props were given to the older brother from Goonies or the forced appearance by his daddy Ollie Stone.

A figurative interpretation relies on historical and other factors.[1] At the time of Jesus, striking someone deemed to be of a lower class with the back of the hand was used to assert authority and dominance.[2] If the persecuted person "turned the other cheek," the discipliner was faced with a dilemma. The left hand was used for unclean purposes, so a back-hand strike on the opposite cheek would not be performed.[3] The other alternative would be a slap with the open hand as a challenge or to punch the person, but this was seen as a statement of equality. Thus, by turning the other cheek the persecuted was in effect demanding equality. By handing over one's cloak in addition to one's tunic, the debtor has essentially given the shirt off their back, a situation directly forbidden by Jewish Law as stated in Deuteronomy 24: 10-13:

Oh, just splendid. Now the lefties have discovered my Obama/Ayers post, and for the first time I'm learning first hand the depths of their underhanded tactics. In the last hour, they've been coming on in waves and posting cartoonish racist comments that inevitably employ the "n-word" about 3 or 4 times per comment, in an attempt to discredit my site. I delete them as soon as they appear, but that of course takes up my time.

And no, I won't describe the moby-comments here, but you can imagine: moonbats posing as their fantasy version of redneck racists. Things like "White men arise! Don't for for ___s! Where's my gun?" etc.

I thought the rap was pretty funny. The "I say 0bama, you say Ayers" part cracked me up, and I don't remember the last time SNL did that.

That was one of the few good lines, and the moose looked funny, but over all I didn't like the skit. I'm not a fan of hip hop either, so that didn't help.

re: #139 doriangrey

Interesting stuff, but isn't the modern interpretation the way they teach it in churches? You make it sound like popular culture "lost" the meaning.

McCain goes on Letterman, who hasn't been funny in a long time. Palin goes on SNL, which was funny in 1978 I think. And a comedian who is not funny is running for the Senate. Then there is Bill Mahr, a comedian who is also not funny who gets to spout is political beliefs all over. Then the Democrats, who are definitely not funny, but who are obviously comedians because they put out Pelosi, Reid, Frank, and Dodd as people who know what shinola is, who smear and attack everything not Democrat while lying about it, and the media, which is also not funny, has turned into the most lying vicious propaganda tool I have ever seen. Not funny any of it.

I am voting for McCain, but then I am done with political shows, newspapers, and all that for 4 years. I will keep my income down legally for a few years which one can do by gifting to their children, and for the self employed putting all the kids on the pay roll. Go back and look at some the political cartoons from the Lincoln era. They were portraying Lincvoln as a chimpanzee, an ape, a devil. The issue was the War. I don't buy it.

The US, in particular, positively flourished (religiously) in the wake of the establishment of Separation of Church and State. All kinds of new ideas were explored - a lot of them pretty whacky - but it doesn't make sense to call them the result of "secular ideologies". Would you say that about the Latter Day Saints (Mormons)? Get real!

You are right. I would assume the best means to do that is through example.

Media has led the way in the erosion of civility. I noticed it long time back, with each TV season setting the bar lower and lower. Almost like the Roman Colosseum. They didn't start off tossing people to the lions and hundreds killing each other at the onset. The Colosseum started off with simple competitions and gladiator fights. As time passed people became inured to the spectacle and wanted more which the government happily gave them.

I explained to him the difference between "wealth" and "money", and how in a productive capitalist system there are never too many mouths to feed. Rational thinking - Something Leftists have successfully avoided for decades. They usually are controlled first and foremost by emotions. Which further explains the ease with which they use vulgarities at socially inappropriate times, and why they are so hate filled and violent. A rational thinking man does not punch a middle aged women because she is holding a McCain sign. And then bizarrely claim the signs made him do it. He was brilliant and taken far too young. Loved his caveman lawyer bit.

He was great...but that Admiral Stockdale characterization he made famous was truly a disgrace. All these years, I didn't really understand the context of it (though I voted Republican, I didn't really involve myself much in politics back then), until a few weeks ago when I heard about Stockdale's son coming out about it just before the VP debate. I was prompted to look up his biography, and I ended up in tears.

It was, sadly, evidence of the power that SNL can have. So many people thought Stockdale was just a senile old man. It is a tragedy to me that patriots and heroes like Stockdale and McCain are the butt of jokes about their mental capacity and their teeth. Sometimes I wonder if America even deserves such men anymore.

Having said that, I'm rather surprised that anyone thought Palin's appearance - and the contrast she presented to their caricature of her - was anything but a total win for her. She was stunningly beautiful, natural, poised, and funny. I thought it was brilliant of her to face them down.

Speaking of voter fraud...why don't we make everyone dip their finger in purple stain/paint ala Iraq. Worked pretty well there didn't it?

That is an EXCELLENT idea. How much you wanna bet the left will have seizures? They will suddenly claim the right is trying to hold down the imaginary voters who are allergic to purple non-toxic ink.

I think Reagan was/is despised with every bit as much vitriol as we see directed at W and even McCain, by precisely the same people. He was swept in to power after the country grew weary of the very type of governance we are about to see again, if BHO wins.

Reagan was despised by the Left with an intensity that made the Right look positively fond of Clinton.

And the Left just could not tolerate our lack of respect of Clinton.

I remember lefties applauding when Reagan was shot.

The fact that the fattest Baldwin brother couldn't even look at Gov. Palin when he spoke at her and then 'redeemed' himself by his misogynistic slur spoke volumes about Lefty social mores. The rest was just as unfunny. Palin demonstrated her usual true grit throughout.

I just wish Conservatives would avoid SNL etc. as the irrelevancy it is.

Then go back and read the Lincoln-Douglas debates, which were attended by ordinary people. The average college graduate today would not have the intellectual level, much less the patience, to follow them.
You are right that campaigns have always had some mud-slinging, but the effects of nasty cartoons and ugly epithets was limited and localized, and they were balanced out by attacks from the other side.

What you did not have in the past is a mass media filtering information and determining "reality" for the nation as a whole. A mass media that currently is run by persons who have no scruples about deliberately and systematically propagating disinformation.

Sarah Palin Delivers Highest ‘Saturday Night Live’ Ratings Since 1994

That's not a big surprise to me. My parents -- who I'm sure haven't watched SNL since the '70s, and who are normally in bed by 10pm even on weekends -- actually stayed up to watch the SNL spoof of the VP debate a couple weeks ago, simply because they'd heard about Tina Fey's Palin impression by word-of-mouth. (According to my mom, they thought it was hilarious -- but they still weren't tempted to watch more of SNL, and went to bed right after that sketch ended!)

Maybe so, but there have been some bright moments.

Calling abortion good, or a baby "punishment", reveals allegiance to the dark side; let him go.

On that point , in the Illinois Senate Obama tried to block a bill to require medical services to be rendered to a live baby surviving a botched abortion. We are all aware of that.
That child is an American citizen in full for one thing , but more importantly a human being.

The Democrats voted on party lines to block the passage of the 13th amendment, outlawing slavery.

With the enthusiastic support of Democrat President Andrew Johnson.

Because he was Lincoln's VP, most people assume he was Republican* and use his racist campaigning against the 13th and 14th Amendments as "proof" that the GOP has been "the Party of racism" since the beginning.

*Johnson was a pro-Union "War Democrat" added to the ticket to draw votes away from George McClellan. Turned out to not be necessary, and the nation suffered because of it.

re: #302 capitalist piglet

I wasn't a Perot fan, but I had respect for Stockdale. I thought he was the most honest guy in that election. I remember him quoting Publius Tacitus, the ancient Roman historian and senator. Got to respect that in a day and age when people act as if the only history that occurred was within their life time.

Btw, another philosopher of that era was Cicero. I swear to you, he had a great many insights into proper government, and was a hero of John Adams'. I've seen some excerpts that were very similar to the ideas of the founders. I plan on looking into him more when I get a chance.

The fact that Sarah Palin's appearance (if only for a few minutes) gave SNL their best ratings in 14 years is not insignificant. Nor is the fact that John McCain helped David Letterman win the ratings match up between him and Leno.

Both showed character and courage in the face of and overwhelming and obviously hostile environment, not to mention great dignity when being mocked mercilessly by ignorant and childish yet poor "comedians".

Obama, on the other hand, gets spanked by a plumber's honest question and he throws a temper tantrum by mocking the honest man. And Joe Biden calls undecided voters racists.

I still have faith that the still undecided and honest, hard-working Americans will see through the hopey-changey facade to the vindictive, destructive childishness that is the core of the Obama/Biden ticket.

The act, in Christ's time, of turning your cheek was a demand to be treated as an equal. It said to the person slapping you, OK, you just slapped me like I was a child, woman or a slave, now hit me like I was a man or your equal... If you have the balls to do so...

It was in fact a very aggressive and radical thing to tell his fellow Jews to do.

Sorry, but your interpretation is complete and utter nonsense, because here's the context of the quote, from Luke 6:27-30:

27: But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28: Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29: And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. 30: Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

And similarly in Matthew 5:38-41:

38: Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40: And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. 41: And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

So are you seriously prepared to argue that when Jesus said, "give him your cloak, too," what he really meant was "tell the punk to take your cloak if he's got the balls"?

That stated, do you still have the phone number of the naughtiest Catholic girl from your schoo, days?

Upon graduating from Columbia, Obama attempted a career as a community organizer. He wrote that when classmates weren’t sure what that was, he didn’t have a sufficient answer for them. “Instead, I’d pronounce the need for change,” he wrote. “Change in the White House, where Reagan and his minions were carrying on their dirty deeds. Change in the Congress, compliant and corrupt. Change in the mood of the country, manic and self-absorbed. Change won’t come from the top, I would say. Change will come from a mobilized grass roots.

That’s what I’ll do, I’ll organize black folks. At the grass roots. For change.

Palin is so much better looking than Fey, if I were Fey I would avoid ever standing next to her. It's the same reason I hated wearing uniforms in Catholic grade school; it always favors the better looking girls with the better figures. At least if you can dress with your own style, you can cover up your flaws without a direct comparison.

No problem with me. Heck, I even remember those school uniforms--and my girlfriend filling one out nicely.

How about we make it even simpler, banish the whole registration process and just make everyone show an ID before they vote (preferably an ID that only citizens can get, maybe have your precinct on your ID so you cant go vote in a different precinct). That way, ACORN and groups like it would lose their power to create fraud and chaos, only citizens would vote, and each person would have one vote. It sounds almost too easy to be true, so you know politicians would never go for it.

My memory of presidential elections goes back to 1956 Stevenson v. Eisenhower. I lived in Westchester Cty, New York then, and I didn't know ANYONE who was for Eisenhower except my own father about whom I was ashamed. When Eisenhower won, I was SHOCKED but it also opened up my idea of the rest of the country. It is amazing to me that other dems don't open up their minds after the elections of 2000 and 2004.

Powell won't affect people. Everyone will see it as 1) a vote for a fellow black man, and 2) a career move (covering his back against future accusations of war crimes and looking for a cabinet position- the proverbial carrot and stick).

Interesting ... I lived in the SF Bay Area then and remember it as well. I may have been somewhat sheltered but most everyone I was aware of was for Ike.

Do you recall the "push a peanut with your nose" bet between them?

Full agreement on your Powell analysis.

I seem to recall the talking heads and leading Democrats after the last presidential election saying the Democrat party needed to go to a more centrist position and back to their roots based on the exit polls. Less than a month later the DNC heads were stating the election reflected on the need of the Democrat party to go more to the left. Never figured where they got their data.

With the vitriolic demonizing of each sides top candidates I think it is important that they appear in these venues. The main audience has been spoonfed liberal bias and caricatures of them over time and their appearances in these venues deflate the bs being spread and demonstrates that they are real people not just "the other side" being vilified in the papers/news shows etc without rebuke...

Just got back from the McCain rally in Westerville, OH. Overflow crowd. Place held 5,000 and those that were turned watched outside on a huge screen TV.

1. Obama protesters were there shouting at the McCain people as they walked along in line to get into the rally. The hate and intimidation is on the Obama side but the press isn't going to show that. I will.

2. I think some plants were there trying to get sound bites of McCain supporters saying "hateful" things.

3. The college kids I interviewed don't have a clue.

4. PUMAs were there. And they have a group 14,000 STRONG WHO ARE ACTIVELY VOLUNTEERING for McCain. They are traveling across the nation. The spokesperson I interviewed is on fire for McCain. She also lays out how ACORN was working fraudulently during the primaries.

5. The SEIU was there (ties to ACORN) and the UFCW was there. I talked to some of them. One of them told me to shove it up my ass.

It's going to take a couple hours to upload the video and then edit so I'll get a report up as soon as possible. You have to hear from this group of Hillary supporters for McCain!

As was mentioned earlier - these are "polls" that can be trusted. And give one profound insight about reality without the biased and filtered BS we are fed by the MSM.

I live in San Francisco, and am literally surrounded by Liberals, which is not always a bad thing, as I even consider myself a Classic Liberal (but not a Leftist) in the true sense of the definition. I love freedom, human rights, life and liberty and fiscal conservatism, which to me, allows all the previous attributes.

But, today's "Liberals" are not any of these things. They are not freedom minded, they will not stand up for human rights, they do not protect the lives of the weak, they never protect liberty, and love to confiscate the wealth of those who earned and give it to those who did not, and they never fail to ally themselves with every single despot on the planet, no matter how repulsive.

As far as being social with them, if I hear something offensive, I pretend not to hear it, sometimes I walk away. If they persist in inflicting me with insults, I will give the same back to them. I have been known to walk out of public events in protest.

Other specific insults would call for immediate, shall we say, remedial action on my part.

Was prepping #377 when power went out... firefox = saved everything...

OT: During the power outage noticed someone stole one of the two McCain signs on the property... Not the one on the highly trafficked stopsign corner but the side alley corner... it was up late last night and I didn't notice it missing earlier today... walked to that corner and found the wire frame laying on the ground, bent and missing the signage... so... either it was ripped of the frame at some point last night/early AM and I missed it earlier today or the asshole(s) doing this are running around during football time to do their dirty little deeds in broad daylight on a beautiful Sunday afternoon here...

Sigh... guess I'll be getting new sign to put there tomorrow*... cowardly bastards...

*and no, I'm not boobytrapping it either... rejected the idea because the neighbors kids have their bus stop there...

Yep. Too sensible!

But FBV is spot on about the ink on the finger. It does nothing in and of itself to prevent someone who is not eligible to vote to go ahead and do so. It's not a cure-all. It does, however, prevent anyone.....and especially the dead..... from voting multiple times.

396 Shug  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 12:41:25pm

My plan for a better government.

1. Penalize people for not voting. Some financial penalty. If you can't vote, you need a written excuse, or you can appeal it.

2. Poll quiz-- You must pass a simple quiz on government to be allowed to vote. This quiz will be administered only in English and will have questions like, how many US senators come from your state, Who is the vice president, who is the speaker of the House.
Everybody ought to be able to pass

3. You must show a valid ID to vote.

4. Once you vote, your finger gets dyed

5. If you are caughte trying to commit voter fraud, you are put in prison for 1 year. No exceptions. No early release, and your Warden is named Sheriff Joe Arpaio

397 Shug  Sun, Oct 19, 2008 12:42:48pm

6. and the election is held on a Friday, Saturday , Sunday so everybody can vote.

and exit polls are banned

Considering how Dr James Dobson of Focus on the Family spoke so favorably about John McCain after the Saddleback Forum, I'd say the Evangelicals are strongly on board with Mac/Sarah. And that was before Sarah was tapped for the VP spot.

I'd imagine Mac/Sarah have the evangelical vote sewn up tight.

If you register on campus and say you are for McCain they throw the registration away.

Obama will win by theft - not true vote counts :-(

And the ONLY reason the state of Washington has a demonrat governor is due to vote fraud.

re: #393 wolfie

In Canada, this was the first time ever that ID was required. The person voting had to show a valid (picture) ID (such as a driver's license, etc.) but, this was only Step 1. Step 2 was a requirement (after establishing the person's identity) to demonstrate residency (that is, you had to show that you actually lived in the area). The residency requirement is to prevent running around at different locations and casting votes. So, you had to show a utility bill (etc) with your name and address on it, etc., etc. (There were reports that many would-be voters were turned away at the polls -- it was the lowest voter turn out ever in Canada's history.) (I tend to believe that these measures could not be adopted in the U.S. -- it'd all be deemed "Jim Crow" laws designed to disenfranchise voters...
