He is a respected scholar, although he vehemently disagrees with a lot of Israel's policy.

BHO calls him a respected scholar? Is this what passes for scholarship nowadays?

As I said, I have no inside information on the Obama-Khalidi connection. But I did note this statement by Obama, when pressed on Khalidi:

I do know him [Khalidi] because I taught at the University of Chicago [where Khalidi taught prior to his Columbia appointment—MK]. And he is Palestinian. And I do know him and I have had conversations. He is not one of my advisors; he's not one of my foreign policy people. His kids went to the Lab School where my kids go as well. He is a respected scholar, although he vehemently disagrees with a lot of Israel's policy.

To which I would ask the candidate in response: What aspect of his "scholarship" do you respect?

I'm going to guess it's racist to ask that.

40 Noam Sayin'  Tue, Oct 21, 2008 8:41:24pm

From Gaza Blame-thrower:

So what has the courageous historian had to say this morning about the brutal Hamas-Fatah showdown and the fall of Gaza to Hamas? In a National Public Radio interview, he describes both factions as "blind, shortsighted, irresponsible," and reassures us that "neither of these groups, I think, really represents the deepest aspirations of the Palestinians; they've become vehicles for personal and group ambitions rather than what one could honestly call leadership of a Palestinian national movement." How Khalidi knows these "deepest aspirations" is an interesting question. But the answer hardly matters, because at the very end of the interview comes the kicker: the final assignment of responsibility.

This is a direct, logical, inevitable result of American, Israeli, and European policy. The foolishness and the irresponsibility of the Palestinian leadership played an enormous role, but a lot of this has to be laid at the doorstep of Bush administration and Israeli government policy. They almost willed this result. They refused to deal with anybody, they refused to negotiate, they refused to try and bring along the people with whom they could have negotiated, including leaders in Hamas, and this is the logical, inevitable, natural result.

So much for Palestinian "agency." When you see Palestinians butcher one another in power struggles, just remember that Bush and Israel have willed it. The Palestinians are too "blind, shortsighted" to see that they're subject to mind control. But even were they to know it--well, the result, in Khalidi's own word, is "inevitable."

In my last Sandstorm column, I criticized Rashid Khalidi's fact-free assertion that the universities are dominated by conservatives. In an interview, he had focused on schools of law and international affairs. But in a remarkable speech last spring, he issued a blanket indictment of many more academic fields.

It happened at a Columbia rally in support of professors accused by students of political harassment. Khalidi insisted the profs were victims of a concerted campaign run from outside the university, and added this:

It's a campaign that's based on an utterly spurious argument that the universities are strongholds of radical and liberal ideas. Would that they were strongholds of radical and liberal ideas. (Applause.) Would that the medical schools and the pharmaceutical schools were challenging the stranglehold of industrial medicine, of the industrial pharmaceutical industry. (Applause.) Would that agriculture schools--would that agriculture schools or business schools were challenging the reigning orthodoxies. Would that economics departments, would that engineering schools, would that schools of international affairs were vigorously challenging the reigning orthodoxies in their fields. Would--I could go on and on and on.

This guy thinks the universities are controlled by conservatives? LMAO!

0bama not only has terrorist associates, they're delusional as well.

I think Obama's tactic has always been to "go along" which worked perfectly with Michelle and in Chicago - he let himself be groomed - doesn't like confrontation.

But now he's has 1/2 the country actively working against him - this has to be messing with his mind.

Rashid walks warily down the street,
With the brim pulled way down low
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet,
Machine guns ready to go
Are you ready, Are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the Obots rip
To the sound of the beat
Chorus

Another one hits the bus
Another one hits the bus
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another hits the bus
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one hits the bus

How do you think the Left is gonna get along,
Without Bush, when he's gone
Fannie took them for everything they had,
And kicked them out on their own

Are you happy, are you satisfied
How long can you stand the polls
Out of the doorway the Obots rip
To the sound of the rolls

Another one hits the bus
Another one hits the bus
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one hits the bus
Another one hits the bus

There are plenty of ways you can hurt a man
And bring him to the ground
You can slime him
You can cheat him
You can treat him bad and leave him
When he's down
But Mac's ready, yes he's ready for you
He's standing on his own two feet
Out of the doorway the Obost rip
Repeating the sound of the beat

Another one hits the bus
Another one hits the bus
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another hits the bus
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one hits the bus

So I crash dived (again) and again computer wouldn't shut off. Restarted it tried to shut down without going anywhere, not even to home page and then tried to shut down and same problem. So I crash dived again, let everything load,
and instead of shutting down I hit "Re=boot" which it did do, then I went to shut down and ta-da - it shut down.
Tonight I started it, hit reboot and got the same shit as before: "Windows saving your seetings and then nothing but Windows is shutting down."
Then when I got on computer again, I came here, checked e-mail, returned here and cursor froze (it's an Optical Scan mouse, though not corless) and came with a UBS input, so I just now plugged it into another UBS port.
Any ideas?! Other than shoot the s.o.b., I mean!
WTF is going on?!

129 thedude  Tue, Oct 21, 2008 8:58:48pm

a joke...
John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called 'pullets', and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs. He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. John's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for cover.
To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring.
He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges
not only awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making.
Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing themwhen they weren't paying attention.

Vote carefully this year,

the bells are not always audible.

University departments like to hire people like Khalidi, Dohrn, Ayers, Ward Churchill, etc. to provide some diversity of opinion. They don't want everyone to be lefty Democrats, so they reach out to the extreme left to provide a variety of views for discussion.Seriously.

They don't even consider hiring people with centrist or (gasp) anti-leftist views because holding such views is ipso facto evidence of "poor scholarship," intolerance, narrow-mindedness, dogmatism, and all things hostile to civilazation as they define it.

I then got warnings every time I started my computer about having low disk space on the drive.

re: #96 realwest

I have seen this complaint on many forums, it also happened to me running XP Pro. I couldn't ever shut it down any other way than with the power button. I'll check around a bit and try to find out more, the only thing that cured mine was my power supply went out and burnt out my motherboard which, after replacing, necessitated a new install of XP. that's not necessarily the problem with your system, so I don't want to alarm you.

I think I recommended this before, but download this free prograand run it, it has categories for each piece of hardware and software on your machine, and if there's anything wrong it will give you options to fix at the bottom of the analysis. Very easy to use. Pay particular attention to your power supply, that's one component where manufacturers tend to put in junk and it can cause your machine to run erratically or at worst, fry the motherboard and processor like happened to me.

Yeah - my machine uses AMD and when I read the horror stories about SP 3 and AMD, I blocked all auto downloading from MS. Still have it blocked.
And I use either Maxthon (a shell over IE) or FireFox 2.

Y'know, if you're running around the internets on a woefully unpatched windows machine you're just askin for trouble.

The thing about SP3 not playing well with AMD sounds like hooey to me.

I would get a new hard drive and install a fresh, fully patched copy of windows (or linux if you're a real man :-) on it, and then copy your files over from your current drive.

If you're running an unpatched, old version of windows, and it's connected to the internet, it can get pwned in a matter of minutes, especially if you don't have a firewall.

My first move would be to reboot in safe mode. You could go into to safe networking mode but you may not have your many spyware and A/V tools (that may be a problem unto itself). When you boot up hit F8 key before you get the Windows logo and choose safe networking mode and use you usual logon. If the problems go away it is probably something rotten is loading in your start up.

It's when you power down - use the power button to shut off computer when the #&$^@~+! Turn Off computer button either doesn't work or your mouse freezes and you can't get to the Turn Off (start button).

RW, try Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Run that, and you will get a "calendar" with restore dates on it. Pick a day you know the machine worked well, and tell the system to restore itself to that date. You won't lose any data or documents, but you will lose any programs you installed since that date.

If you are not running a good firewall, get one. Likewise, get a good anti-virus program. Also get Spybot Search&Destroy.

NARAL mailer attack John McCain on birth control

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Once again, leading pro-abortion NARAL appears to understand that its attacks on John McCain on the issue of abortion would fall on deaf ears with polls showing a majority of Americans oppose most or all abortions. So a new NARAL mailer attacks McCain on a less controversial topic -- birth control. Knowing more Americans favor birth control than abortion, NARAL has mailed a new piece of campaign literature to voters in several top battleground states. The ad claims McCain is opposed to birth control. "When it comes to birth control and family planning, John McCain just says no," the mailer contends. "When it comes to reproductive rights, John McCain's answer is no. On November 4, return the favor by just saying no to John McCain." Not until voters read the fine print of the NARAL mailer are they confronted with abortion

Here's another option you can try Realwest. Your problem seems to be extremely common from what I've found.

I finally narrowed down the potential culprits to one: PccNTMon.exe.

If you have tried to log off/shut down numerous times and been returned to the desktop, try this:

Go into Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete is one way), select the Processes tab and look for PccNTMon.exe (if you happen to have Office Scan on your system), select it, and click the End Process button (ignore dire warnings), then you should find your system then heads to the shut down/log off process very quickly.

I recommend restarting your system, logging in, and then shutting down again immediately but using the usual process of Start etc, or whatever you normally use, so that the system gets a chance to go through the process as it should.

Since in this specific case you have Norton AntiVirus, my guess is that is what's got twister knickeritis and is petulantly refusing to allow a shut down because you might be a virus.

Off the top of my head I can't tell you what executable you should look for - it'll probably be something like NavMon.exe or somesuch. If anyone else knows the correct .exe, please chip in, even at this late date!

60 Second Refutation of Socialism, While Sitting at the Beach (Part 1)

Last week, there were several comments in Carnival of the Capitalists that people would like to see more articles highlighting the benefits of capitalism. This got me thinking about a conversation I had years ago at the beach:

Hanging out at the beach one day with a distant family member, we got into a discussion about capitalism and socialism. In particular, we were arguing about whether brute labor, as socialism teaches, is the source of all wealth (which, socialism further argues, is in turn stolen by the capitalist masters). The young woman, as were most people her age, was taught mainly by the socialists who dominate college academia nowadays. I was trying to find a way to connect with her, to get her to question her assumptions, but was struggling because she really had not been taught many of the fundamental building blocks of either philosophy or economics, but rather a mish-mash of politically correct points of view that seem to substitute nowadays for both.

One of the reasons I took up writing a blog is that I have never been as snappy or witty in real-time discussions as I would like to be, and I generally think of the perfect comeback or argument minutes or hours too late. I have always done better with writing, where I have time to think. However, on this day, I had inspiration from a half-remembered story I had heard before. I am sure I stole the following argument from someone, but to this day I still can't remember from whom.

I picked up a handful of sand, and said "this is almost pure silicon, virtually identical to what powers a computer. Take as much labor as you want, and build me a computer with it -- the only limitation is you can only have true manual laborers - no engineers or managers or other capitalist lackeys".

Yeah, I know what you're thinking - beach sand is not pure silicon - it is actually silicon dioxide, SiO2, but if she didn't take any economics she certainly didn't take any chemistry or geology.

She replied that my request was BS, that it took a lot of money to build an electronics plant, and her group of laborers didn't have any and bankers would never lend them any.

All too many defenders of capitalism would have stopped here, and said aha! So you admit you need more than labor - you need capital too. But Marx would not have disagreed - he would have said it was the separation of labor and capital that was bad - only when laborers owned the capital, rather than being slaves to the ruling class that now controls the capital, would the world reach nirvana. So I offered her just that:

I told her - assume for our discussion that I have tons of money, and I will give you and your laborers as much as you need. The only restriction I put on it is that you may only buy raw materials - steel, land, silicon - in their crudest forms. It is up to you to assemble these raw materials, with your laborers, to build the factory and make me my computer.

She thought for a few seconds, and responded "but I can't - I don't know how. I need someone to tell me how to do it"

And that is the heart of socialism's failure. For the true source of wealth is not brute labor, or even what you might call brute capital, but the mind. The mind creates new technologies, new products, new business models, new productivity enhancements, in short, everything that creates wealth. Labor or capital without a mind behind it is useless.

One thing I look for are processes that are sucking huge amounts of memory. Kill them and restart them. I have seen Firefox grow to over 350 MB, other things can do the same. Memory leaks I expect, or they don't release memory when done with a thread.

Realwest, I found this on another forum and it worked for the person who complained about it. I understand you don't want SP3, so if you try this, do a "custom install" of updates instead of "express install" like most people do. That way you can put a check mark in the boxes of only the updates you want, instead of everything Microsoft sends your way, you can easily eliminate SP3 of the list of updates to install.

I had this problem on my system and solved it by downloading the latest updates fro xp. The problem is to do with the windows automatic update program. Thats the program that is causing the freeze because windows is trying to apply updates or something similar. If you go into an internet explorer window, then go to tools, windows update, it should take you through the updating. Hope this helps :)

60 Second Refutation of Socialism, While Sitting at the Beach (Part 2)

From the year 1000 to the year 1700, the world's wealth, measured as GDP per capita, was virtually unchanged. Since 1700, the GDP per capita in places like the US has risen, in real terms, over 40 fold. This is a real increase in total wealth - it is not money stolen or looted or exploited. Wealthy nations like the US didn't "take" the wealth from somewhere else - it never even existed before. It was created by the minds of human beings.

How? What changed? Historians who really study this stuff would probably point to a jillion things, but in my mind two are important:

1. There was a philosophical and intellectual change where questioning established beliefs and social patterns went from being heresy and unthinkable to being acceptable, and even in vogue. In other words, men, at first just the elite but soon everyone, were urged to use their mind rather than just relying on established beliefs

2. There were social and political changes that greatly increased the number of people capable of entrepreneurship. Before this time, the vast vast majority of people were locked into social positions that allowed them no flexibility to act on a good idea, even if they had one. By starting to create a large and free middle class, first in the Netherlands and England and then in the US, more people had the ability to use their mind to create new wealth. Whereas before, perhaps 1% or less of any population really had the freedom to truly act on their ideas, after 1700 many more people began to have this freedom.

So today's wealth, and everything that goes with it (from shorter work hours to longer life spans) is the result of more people using their minds more freely.

Look around the world - for any country, ask yourself if the average person in that country has the open intellectual climate that encourages people to think for themselves, and the open political and economic climate that allows people to act on the insights their minds provide and to keep the fruits of their effort. Where you can answer yes to both, you will find wealth and growth. Where you answer no to both, you will find poverty and misery.

UPDATE

While it is not exactly a direct follow-on to this article, see my post Progressives are too Conservative to Like Capitalism for an analysis of some of capitalism's detractors. For yet another way to explain capitalism, at least libertarian philosophy, here is a new-agy approach that is actually pretty good. Finally, Spontaneous Order has an interesting post comparing religious creationism in the physical world with progressives' statism in the economic/social realms.

Update #2: Here is my more recent statement covering similar ground, focusing on the mistaken assumption that economics are all zero-sum.

You need to delete non-essential stuff you saved. Like if you saved any Obambi speeches. As to what you consider non-essential, can't help you there.

I'd do a search and look for extremely large files. For instance, I had Microsoft Works on my back-up drive. That's 250 mb. I deleted it since it's on my master drive, whoops, that's racist! My primary drive.
Click Start> Search> File size, and set it to search for over 100 mb. Delete what you don't need. If you attempt to delete something important, you'll get a warning.
And anything you delete will go to the recycle bin, which is not "deducted" from your free space.

re: #110 nigella

I'm not sure Biden has a clue what he thinks. With all the talk about Palin not being ready to be POTUS, what about dim-wit Biden. Could you just imagine Biden in a crisis situation trying to communicate with World leaders? The man is a walking gaffe machine. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Hey, be fair! After all, BIDEN HAS A MUCH HIGHER IQ THAN YOU DO.

Plus, he really knows how to be HAPPY.

--And he's a really good SINGER.

Did I mention that he's also a very believable HISTORIAN?

re: #15 DistantThunder

It appears that Obama is some kind of front man for a loosely organized gang of terrorists, Marxists, Muslim extremist and Black liberation theologists.

All these older Machiavellian types focused on one young guy.

This would make a great horror movie - rather like Rosemary's baby.

I think we already decide that Stanley Ann's baby wasn't a good title.

Suggestions?

re: #96 realwest

and
re: #70 ted Thank you both!
Well when I started on the DT today, my cursor froze on me three times and I had to "crash dive" every single time.
Finally got it up and running and everything was fine - then I go to shut off, get Blue Windows screen saying Saving Your Settings, then Windows is shutting down and then - nada - it wouldn't shut down.

I recommend Driver Detective. Sounds like a driver problem, and DD will assess all of your drivers and download and install whatever you need. Fixed similar problems on my XP when I upgraded to Service Pack 3.

The more I learn about Obama, the more I wonder how he can sway so many. If this cluck was chosen as a VP candidate he never would have survived the vetting process, yet the MSM refuses to acknowledge ANY of his negatives.

Great Comment from Boortz:

One interesting point: If Barack Obama was applying for a security clearance as a government employee, these associations would disqualify him. We are, my friends, about to have a president who doesn’t qualify for a security clearance. Pretty pathetic. If Barack Obama becomes president, he would not even qualify to be his own bodyguard.

I've met Khalidi, he didn't want to look me in the eyes...that told me enough...Kinda like Barack when he had nothing to say about economics...they have no reason to expose themselves to the risk of losing an argument, their faulty reasoning exposed...

Why have a press conference?

And that is the heart of socialism's failure. For the true source of wealth is not brute labor, or even what you might call brute capital, but the mind. The mind creates new technologies, new products, new business models, new productivity enhancements, in short, everything that creates wealth. Labor or capital without a mind behind it is useless.

Which leads to my favorite Joseph Stalin quote:

“Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas.”

With the help of the last fifty years of education, the left is now in a pretty good position to take over, as critical thinking and rational thought are a mystery to many in the 18-30 age bracket. Ripe for the pickins.

re: #331 kenneth charles simmonds

I think it is really sad that the late great Charles Johnson is reduced to fishing for dirt to try to hurt Obama. What is this site, other than a bearpit for Republican whiteboys? The whole site has lost credibility in my eyes.

This creep has now been blocked three times from LGF. He's in Germany, and he's a supporter of Eurofascists, and he keeps coming back with new sock puppets.

And he'll get blocked every time.
