CNN Reporter Distorts National Review Article

Politics | Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 8:32:46 am PDT

Yesterday CNN’s Drew Griffin blatantly distorted a quote from a National Review article by Byron York about Sarah Palin; Rich Lowry has the details of the latest egregious media smear.

Here’s the full article by York, a very positive look at Palin’s governorship of Alaska: How Palin Governed.

This is the year media died.

Well I understand why this happened.CNN was so busy working on that explosive new revelation that the RNC spent 150,000 dollars on a wardrobe for Sarah, that they couldn't be bothered by something as little as the facts. Don't you understand the importance of Palin's wardrobe to the safety of this great nation?

Its very clear that the media recognizes some of Barry's deficiencies and projects them on to Sarah Palin when they criticize her for lack of experience. Unlike Barry, she does not have the race crutch to lean on and she's strong enough that she doesn't need it.

50 Son of the Black Dog  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 8:47:41am

The real problem with the MSM is that it hasn't died.

The circulation, viewership, and ad revenue may be down, but that pain has not yet been felt in the reporting and editorial departments. With all due respect to our resident Zombie, the MSM is like a group of zombies, moving forward in lockstep and attempting to infect as much of the population as possible with their left-wing viewpoints. This election's issues and candidates would be perceived far more clearly by the American public if the members of the MSM had all gone bankrupt and died, and America got its news via a large number of small news gathering organizations.

I don't think this is the year MSM died. MSNBC is gaining viewers, many or most Democrats think Bush stole the 2004 election and probably 20% of the country thinks he orchastrated 9/11. These crazy ideas came from the media.

However, this is the year the media solidified it's role as a full time "muddy the water" organization for the Left in this country. They just need to report enough crazy stuff to keep the average consumer of news confused and/or disgusted enough to want change. And the Progrssive wing of the Democratic party will give them all the change they can handle. Lots of heat - little light.

56 Walter L. Newton  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 8:49:16am

I have to disagree with Charles. This is not the year the media died.

This is the year that the MSM finally consolidated itself, very publicly, and have declared thier full cooperation with the leftist radical agenda.

They did this for two reasons. They have tended toward being a mouthpiece for the left for years and they see the direction that the country is going in, and they are firming up their position as the Pravda of the West.

Don't ask questions (Joe the Plumber, do you hear that), don't tell the truth (Hey Palin, you c*t, you got that) and don't fight fair (McCain, what are you thinking).

That's the message from the new, rebirthed MSM. Long live our comrades in the Ministry of Truth.

It is important in the context of what the hell the RNC is doing shelling out enough money to pay for a week of ads in Colorado or Virgina (excl. the DC market). That's not Gov. Palin's fault, but the entire GOP apparatus has been asleep at the switch.

It makes you wonder to what extent and for how long this has been going on, and what affect it has had? We all know about cronkite and tet, etc, but how deep does this rabbit hole go? Read Liberal Fascism for a scary look at the media in the 30s and who they endorsed then (read Mussolini). I guess things haven't changed much.

One cannot help but think the country would not be so divided right now almost down the line if we hadn't been spoon fed this stuff from the moment we first sat on the couch (and then got up and turned on the tv for us old guys :)

Oh, to some extent, yes it has: the NY Times and LA Times (among many others) have laid off hundreds of newsroom staff over the last couple of years, with lots more to come. They are definitely feeling it, but haven't the slightest clue that their hypocrisy and obvious lack of objectivity have anything to due with declining circulation.

*Great News*

Al-Quaida web site supports McCain for President.

[Link: www.breitbart.com...]

"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush."

"If al-Qaida carries out a big operation against American interests," the message said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaida. Al-Qaida then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."

Yet a thousand potential stories about Obama and his conenctions to the Chicago Machine, Ayres, Dohrn, Wright, Rezko, et.al. go wanting for coverage.

Is this the best the MSM can do against Governor Palin? If so, the MSM is completely pathetic.

What McCain is seeing now is what more than a few of us predicted on LGF, he was feeling the Media love when he opposed his own party.
Now he is the enemy running against the Chosen One & the love is gone.
A very bitter lesson.

If you've decided on the candidate, then go all-in, and double down. If the depth of support is so shallow, then I question whether I want y'all either in my foxhole or on my six.

re: #62 WitchDoctor

It makes you wonder to what extent and for how long this has been going on, and what affect it has had? We all know about cronkite and tet, etc, but how deep does this rabbit hole go? Read Liberal Fascism for a scary look at the media in the 30s and who they endorsed then (read Mussolini). I guess things haven't changed much.

One cannot help but think the country would not be so divided right now almost down the line if we hadn't been spoon fed this stuff from the moment we first sat on the couch (and then got up and turned on the tv for us old guys :)

This has been going on for a very long time. McCarthy tried to attack it - rather inartfully - in the 1950s as was hung out to dry. Those of us who work and produce snickered at the radicals from the 60s when they began to dominate the media and education establishments in this country. They had to work somewhere we thought - so if they cannot DO anything we let them teach and write.

We thought they were off in the corner safely making baskets and singing folksongs. Their ideas were so crazy that we laughed at them. But we forgot to take notice that their's were the only ideas being heard by the next generation. They were fighting a war and we did not even realize we were being engaged.

When your 10 year old comes home from school and tells you he wants to move to another country because the USA is so bad - but he cannot articulate a reason why it is bad - you realize we have allowed these folks to make a intellectual toxic stew which is destroying us from the inside.

I used to go to cnn.com a lot for news. Have you noticed that, probably three or four days a week, the CNN political ticker's headline is "new poll shows slipping numbers for McCain"? I've been watching this in amazement for months now. If I had a blog, I'd do a little investigation and post about it. If McCain's poll numbers were really going down every time CNN said they were, then he'd be at about negative 20% by now.

It doesn't even matter if their poll numbers are completely made up, that's not the point this time. It's simply not possible to start at 48% of the vote, and then decline by an integral number of percentage points, fifty times in a row.

Anyone else think this is a ploy by the MSM to try and take voters away from McCain? Idiots. MSM can't be bothered with any third party candidates until promoting them could possibly help The Chosen One.

150 DirtyDave  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 9:05:02am

This is not the year the media died; it is the year that any pretext of an objective media died. The MSM is just the Democrat's propaganda arm.

Given that ad revenues are shrinking as the economy shrinks and the viewership and readership of so many of these organizations is dropping, how many will survive a sharp downturn? It's routine now for so many of these organizations to report lower revenue and profits. When do some of these just start to disappear?

151 CIA Reject  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 9:05:33am

re: #66 opinionated

You ain't seen nothing yet.

They now have a stake in the functioning of an Obama Presidency....

It now appears that BO's campaign is, through a compliant media, playing out a script where he is already governing. IMHO that's what Biden's tin foil hat remarks were all about; trying to convey the impression that BO is already POTUS. I think BO's big TV infomercial will try to reinforce that perception.

The MSM and the BO campaign (redundant I know) seem to think that they can play the "perception is reality" game with the American people. They will find out that, bitter, clingy, "rednecked" and "racist" as we may be Americans still realize that perception is perception and reality is reality.

And we really dislike being played for fools.

I think BO has gone a "bridge too far" and he will pay the price for it.

152 Sharmuta  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 9:05:53am

What we can expect from the media during the Obambi administration is peace. The homeless will disappear. Poverty will suddenly be conquered. Protests will mysteriously cease. Crises will spontaneously solve themselves.

Do you see where I'm going? They will report the news in a way guaranteed to provide a peaceful contrast to the almost constant crisis reporting of the Bush years. People love peace and quiet, and they want as much of it as they can get. If they believe that the media reflects reality, and the media projects peace and quiet, then they will believe that Barry brought them peace and quiet. And so it goes.

I've given up. I'm going to throw up my hands in a final essay at my blog and give up myself to the joys of socialism. Conservatism is dead.

The pretext of an objective media was always a façade. There was never an objective media, whether in the US, or any other country. The early newspapers were very partisan and wore it on their banner. That's why several are known as The Republican, The Democrat, etc. It was when the media hit the radio, and later TV, that the façade of fairness was adopted. However, it was never fair, nor completely objective.

It's time the façade was dumped.

My ten year old and I discussed this just last night. We had a long, long discussion where she asked me things like
"What is a Democracy?"
"What does it mean to be a leftist?"
"Why would a government want to take your money?"
(and my favorite)
"Why did the government force banks to loan money to people who couldn't pay them back, that doesn't make any sense?"

She and I have a series of history books we read together called "Story of the World" She writes a quick summary after each chapter. She used to draw cute pictures to go with them (Like two guys getting defenestrated onto a pile of poop) now she writes more in depth analysis and leaves out the pics. We are about a year into it, so in explaining these things to her, I drew on the lessons from history we had already studied.

These 20-30 intervals of history daily are really paying off. I allow that one day she may lean left, but if she does, she will do it with facts and thought and would hopefully bring rationale with her.

But I doubt that's gonna happen!

This is not my idea as I heard it this AM from a caller to the Bill Bennett "Morning in America" show but what someone should do is make a political ad called "The Audacity of Asking Obama A Question". Show the Joe The Plumber episode and then bullet-point all scrutiny that Joe was subjected to by the press and the ridicule by the Democratic candidates themselves. End it with something like "Do you really want a government that will treat its citizens with this much disrespect for asking a simple question of it? Don't the Democrats believe in free speech any more?"

It really is scary, the very Stalinist/Nazi behavior that the Left has attributed to the Bush administration and the Right in general but could NEVER come up with a single concrete example is very much alive and on display on the Left. Nutbags on the Left can scream and accuse the Right of totalitarian behavior but they can do this day after week after month after year and nothing ever happens to them, but let one poor schlub ask the Chosen One a simple question and the Left unleashes the KGB on them. (Too bad it wasn't an alien doing the questioning, then maybe all Joe The Plumber would have had to worry about was a gentle anal probing instead of the red-hot poker that the lamestream media and the Demonrats inserted.)

Obama Administration - Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

I am sick and tired of this media. Truth be told, deep down inside, this is what I want:

I want to declare war on them. Not physically, but war nonetheless. If O gets elected, I want the price to be the media's blood. I'm not talking about just an alternative media. I want full-on, declared war on them. No quarter given, no safe haven. Nothing. I want every journalist thoroughly investigated and exposed for what they've done. I want for every one report lying about conservatives and GOPers, two are legitimately discredited as journalists. They destroy our lives and livelihood like they did Joe The Plumber, we destroy theirs (in an honest and truthful manner. I want to be better than them).

In short, I want to battle against them the Chicago Way.

That'd be my dream anyway. If I had the money I would not hesitate to dedicate my career to exposing them all.

Sorry, just had to vent for a second. Just a silly dream, that's all.

All quotes are "out of context": that's what makes them quotes. And the excuse "out of context" gets used too often, but this is exactly a case of what everybody thinks they mean by that phrase.

Taking "give me liberty of give me death" out of Henry's speech is technically out of context as it is a quote, but accurately portrays what the whole dern speech is about.

This isn't the first time they've done this.

Consider the statement, "Everything I do is right." Sounds arrogant, no? Now consider, "I hope everything I do is right." Suddenly, the sentence is transformed into a rather commonplace wish. We all hope to do the right thing. (Well, most of us.)

This is what Gibson did to Palin. Except as many Christians are prone to do, she said "I pray" in place of "I hope."

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God." Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don't know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

No Gibson, NOT her exact words. BIG difference between "we're sending out soldiers on a task from God" and "I pray we're sending out soldiers on a task that is from God." It's just a Christian's way of saying, I hope we do what is right.

Of course, there's a flip side to all this. As more and more media outlets go belly up, there will be fewer news sources that do the actual original reporting. Those outlets will actually be more powerful than what we have now.

I don't think that's a good idea either.

For one thing, the media would do well to admit the blatantly obvious - that they're biased. Hard left biased, but biased.

Once you get that out of the way, the public will respond in one of two ways: (1) they'll start paying attention again because they'll have a better understanding of who's shaping the editorial policy or (2) they'll tune 'em out completely and the outlets will fold.

(2) clearly appears to be winning out even now... the outlets have been exposed by the blogosphere for its rampant leftist claptrap, and viewers and circulations are down year over year and this has been accelerating.

How to fix the problem? There are no easy fixes because the bias has become entrenched in the newsroom.

Straight news stories are a rarity. You can't even run a business story without the political bias filtering how it's delivered. Everything is politicized.

The media would be wise to start by stripping the politicization of raw news. Get back to basics - who, what, when, where, and why. And keep the editorializing on the why to the editorial page. Stop masquerading editorial opinion as a news report. Be consistent on reporting scandals, particularly political scandals. Name that Party should not have to be played every time a political story runs because Democrats never get affiliations or headlines, while GOP is plastered the moment they do something wrong (breath, sleep, eat).

Even papers like the NYT can do that from time to time. The problem is that it's so rare that you have to actually point this out to people.

First paragraph

Former CBS anchorman Dan Rather says there is a huge double-standard in the media when it comes to coverage the Barack Obama campaign receives, which is clearly made evident in the lack of scrutiny given to comments Obama’s vice presidential running mate Sen. Joe Biden made earlier this week.

re: #229 DirtyDave

Yes, the press was very partisan way back when. It's not so much I mind a partisan press; I just don't like a partisan press telling me it's objective. I would have a lot more respect for CNN, CBS, NBC, et al, if they would just say we are liberal, Democratic and we bias our news to support our beliefs and go from there, let the chips fall were they may, etc. I just want a little honesty here.

I still won't watch them, but I respect them more.

How are things in the UP? Pretty as ever, I hope.

The thing about the era of the Partisan Press was that it was very clear which side it supported, and if you didn't like that, there was a paper that supported your POV.

They will do the exit polls conducted by Barry Supporters with Barrry supporters & get the results out in a hurry. The desired result of course is to dampen down the vote as things move West.

I still smile when I recall the look (shudder) on Susan Estridge's face (shudder shudder) in '04 when she was drinking the exit poll koolaid for Kerry (assuring him of a landslide win) and found out the REAL poll of voting had NOTHING to do with the DEM exit poll data. Lets hope for a repeat this year!

BTW, the Zogby poll today states that JM and BHO are tied amongst NASCAR fans? NOT A CHANCE, kids..... BHO is "only" 2 points down amongst military families? Are they looking to third cousins to get this under "family"? I took four stats courses in college - one can make up any result they want if they make sure to randomly contact the right people...

A story on Politico says that the RNC spent 150k on Palin's wardrobe. They are attacking her and the Republicans several ways...she's supposed to be one of the people but she's spending thousands on clothes at Bloomingdales....we're in an economic crisis and the little people are suffering while she's spending thousands on clothes at Bloomingdales...and, oh, something about the how the RNC paying for her clothes(and some for her kids)may be illegal.

Yes, this is the story MSNBC has chosen as it's lead at the top of the hour, every hour, since 3am. this morning.

I don't believe for a minute that Sarah Palin spent $ 150,000 on clothes for the campaign. I bet that the reporter has made a mistake, putting an extra zero in.

Even Princess Di didn't spend more than than $ 200,000 on her clothes, per annum - and that included some pretty expensive designer evening gowns.

So - no deal, I don't believe it, especially considering the source this came from!

Changing the key words upends the meaning. Unfortunately, Palin lacked the nerve to call BS. What she should have said is this: You have got to be misquoting the article. Oh, and don't believe all the polls out there with 'the one' in the lead.

This was to give the viewers the impression that Nixon was sweating because he was not being truthful. Uncle Walt turned out to the the crazy uncle kept in the attic, ditto for Dan Blather. The media got away with it then because they were a monopoly, but no longer. This year they've finally stopped hiding their teeth and are showing everyone what they really are. Sadly about 50% of this country doesn't care.

Have the moonbats all completely lost all connection with reality?

I doubt that Joy Behar has ever had much of a connection to reality.

I wonder if maybe CNN’s Drew Griffin was really asking a question about his qualifications to be a reporter.
The question arises from the fact that he is intimidated by Sara Palin as a person and her experience as a govenor.

317 shanec99  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 9:39:54am

Look guys, I see no point in getting all fussed up about CNN, they are a TV tabloid with "round the clock" entertainment aimed at selling advertisement time by catering to the needs of uninformed people who are unprepared to do serious analysis and question what they hear. They have a few good news program, but for the most part their standards are appalling and we would perhaps be better served by ignoring them and the ads they sell.
I am hoping for a return to the days when we could depend on reporters to not approach a story with the bias that says "let us find a reason to blame the west in general or successful Americans in particular" for every global, social or societal ill.
For the news I go to the net, Fox news or the News Hour on PBS (even though PBS's government funding bothers me).

And to think, a cornerstone of Obama's campaign is that the World will like us more - wonder how much the World will enjoy: paying for their own military defense (cause we sure won't be able to help 'em out); paying for their own natural disaster relief, their own Malaria shots, Flu shots and all of the "free" medical stuff we've given over the years - hell over the decades and decades (does anyone remember the "Marshall Plan" that LITERALLY saved Western Europe's ass?).
Yeah, I'm quite sure the World will like us a whole lot more if Obama should win the (shudder) Presidency.

Okay, if I recall the first time was the Emperor's representatives. Who got it the second time?

The First Defenestration happened in 1419; the Hussites tossed 7 Town Councilmen out the window in Prague; they would have survived (the dungheap of legend) except for all the folks with weaponry down below.

The Second Defenestration was when the representatives of the Austrian monarchy and some Czech governors were tossed out the window of Prague castle. They landed in a pile of garbage in the moat.

The piece was supposed to be an indictment of the biased media. "Listening to the media, one would think Palin is stupid." and then the same media turns around and tries to use it as an indictment of Palin.

So we're left wondering, stupid, evil, or both?

"Public affairs" is just another safehaven title as a result of FDRegister requirements for facilities that bill to medicare or intermediaries for Medicare reimbursement funds. No matter what you call it, Federal money is being spent on Marketing and Community Organizers to help get revenues for the Hospital. She probably gets a percentage of her salary based on the funds she recruits into the hospital. These earmarks and "contributions" for projects are allowed whether it is For Profit or Not For Profit.

In years past, newspapers often put their political affiliation in their name, and towns usually had two newspapers. You would subscribe to the paper of your political affiliation. You can still see remnants of that today, e.g., the Quincy Herald-Whig (Ill), the Bureau County Republican (Ill) and the Brown County Democrat (Indiana). The us of "Independent" in the name actually meant something, like the Addison Independent (VT).

Maybe this could be revived:

The New York Times-Democrat
The Washington Post-Democrat
The St. Louis Post-Democrat

Truth in advertising. Or maybe it should be the New York Times-Moonbat.

the CNN Headline News yanked his program. He's been silenced -- off the air. He won't have a television spot until the Spring of 2009 with FOX News. Those bastards at CNN -- i suspect that they were pissed big time because Glenn was bringing out all the truth about Obama -- from Obama's connections with Ayers, Khalidi, Wright, etc. and asking questions about how fit Obama is to become President. On Glenn Beck's final days with CNN HLN, he also came out in full support of Sarah Palin -- I'm sure the head honchos were livid and foaming at the mough at that point...and they probably told Beck to self-censor, shut up, spread the "Good" News of the Zero or else...He probably told them to stuff it and looked elsewhere. But in the meantime, millions of his viewers are left without his program... Just another instance of the censorious Left.

332 RaiderDan  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 9:55:41am

Having worked in the big media for many years, I can tell you what they want. Most in the media unconciously, or perhaps ever conciously have made a "Gentleman's Agreement" with Barack Obama.

While on the surface, the average Eastern-educated white liberal in journalism loves Obama because of their chance at racial redemption brought on by guilt (the self-realized hypocrisy of succeeding through the same means that they criticize Republicans for, ie. sending their kids to elite private schools, getting their elite media jobs through the Yale alumni network, hiring females as eye candy in their newsrooms, hiring minorities as mere tokens and giving them only scraps, driving SUVs and living in tony all-white neighborhoods like Berkeley, Upper Northwest Washington, the Upper East Side of Manhattan, trust me, I've seen it all) the bottom line is, as you might expect, the bottom line.

As Drudge reported today, the network news shows audience is dying, literally. Its liberal news for New Deal-era and Great Society-era viewers, AND THEY ARE DYING AND NO-ONE IS REPLACING THEM. But in return for softball coverage, Obama, the ultimate affirmative action candidate will give the white liberal elite media what they want, Fairness Doctrine in the first term, which is what we all suspected, but the second is something that will truly chill you.

I have heard many liberals in the newsroom and in elite journalism schools pine for a British Broadcasting Corporation news organization free of commericial pressures, as they say. (What they really mean is a taxpayer funded, unaccountable news organization that guaratees news jobs in perpetuity and is free from the pressures of political balance. Think of tenured radicals, but in journalism)

An American style BBC, (think NPR on steroids, but on TV, Web and Cable, and worldwide) would guarantee THOUSANDS of jobs for liberal journalists and would be free from market and political pressure.

This is their goal, and Obama may just give it to them. Maybe not in his first term. But it will definitely be there in the second. There will also be aid for liberal newspapers like the New York Times in the form of "grants" for "investigative" or "international" journalism funded from private donors through quasi-government agencies or "collaborations" ie. a joint NPR-New York Times investigation on the Iraq War.

Obama, with his shady ACORN and Corporate Anneberg Challenge, will be a master of sending government and taxpayer funds to friendly institutions and organizations to achieve his political ends. And the media will look the other way, as they will be the beneficiary.

Obama is the Savior. Literally. To the Media.....

I was channel surfing a couple of weeks ago and slid briefly past Larry King's program. He was interviewing Behar, and she was talking about how awful Sarah Palin is, primarily because the governor has demonstrated her choice to not kill a baby before birth. Behar then said that she believes that everyone should stay out of her (Behar's) uterus. Larry King put up onscreen a telephone number for people to call in to the show and discuss with Behar. I can't tell you how difficult it was for me to resist the temptation to telephone and provide her assurance that no human being was interested in getting anywhere near her uterus.

The shallow, self-serving, dishonest, vapid, insincere, manipulative speech that was hailed as the best address since Lincoln's at Gettysburg.
