Nasrallah survives poisoning attempt

Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah was poisoned last week and his life was saved by 15 Iranian doctors who flew to Lebanon to treat him, the Iraqi Web site Almalaf reported Wednesday, quoting Lebanese diplomatic sources.

The sources were quoted as saying that an extremely poisonous chemical substance was used against the Hizbullah leader.

Nasrallah was reportedly in critical condition for several days, until the Iranian doctors arrived and saved his life. The Hizbullah chief is still feeing unwell, according to the report.

re: #2 WrathofG-d

Is this the thread where we don't discuss Obama, Palin, Democrats, or the economy?

No, no, no, and yes.

18 RaiderDan  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 1:59:57pm

Some fellow lizards on the last CNN related thread asked me to repost this so here goes. I'm honored they thought so much this post to do so. BTW. Did my part for McCain/Palin. Donated $250.

There is a reason why the MSM coverage (and the polls) are biased for Obama. They want something from him, and if he's elected, they'll probably get it.

Having worked in the big media for many years, I can tell you what they want. Most in the media unconciously, or perhaps ever conciously have made a "Gentleman's Agreement" with Senator Barack Obama.

While on the surface, the average Eastern-educated white liberal in journalism loves Obama because of their chance at racial redemption brought on by guilt (the self-realized hypocrisy of succeeding through the same means that they criticize Republicans for, ie. sending their kids to elite private schools, getting their elite media jobs through the Yale alumni network, hiring females as eye candy in their newsrooms, hiring minorities as mere tokens and giving them only scraps, driving SUVs and living in tony all-white neighborhoods like Berkeley, Upper Northwest Washington, the Upper East Side of Manhattan, trust me, I've seen it all) the bottom line in the corporate offices, not the newsrooms as you might expect, is the bottom line.

As Drudge reported today, the network news shows audience is dying, literally. Its liberal news for New Deal-era and Great Society-era viewers, AND THEY ARE DYING AND NO-ONE IS REPLACING THEM. They will be out of an audience within a decade and a half. The network bosses will pull the plug well before that, since there will be no audience to sell advertising too. Even the mass retirement of Baby-Boomers won't save them from cable, talk radio, and the Internet

So in return for softball coverage, Obama, the ultimate affirmative action candidate will give the white liberal elite media what they want, Fairness Doctrine in the first term, which is what we all suspected, but the second is something that will truly chill you.

I have heard many liberals in the newsroom and in elite journalism schools pine for a British Broadcasting Corporation news organization free of commericial pressures, as they say. (What they really mean is a taxpayer funded, unaccountable news organization that guaratees news jobs in perpetuity and is free from the pressures of political balance. Think of tenured radicals, but in journalism)

An American style BBC, (think NPR on steroids, but on TV, Web and Cable, and worldwide) would guarantee THOUSANDS of jobs for liberal journalists and would be free from market and political pressure.

This is their goal. Hillary HATED the press, so it was clear she would never give them what they wanted. But Obama may just give it to them, so they've thrown their support his way to get him elected.

There will be aid for liberal newspapers like the New York Times in the form of "grants" for "investigative" or "international" journalism funded from private donors through quasi-government agencies or "collaborations" ie. a joint NPR-New York Times investigation on the Iraq War, or government "grants" to elite journalism schools like UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism, which already partners with PBS' Frontline in producing "investigative" journalism. An Obama administration could funnel millions of dollars through PBS to journalism schools, which in turn would "partner" with MSM outlets for projects, investigating and reporting on naturally, the left's favorite boogeymen, Big Oil, Halliburton, Wal-Mart, the military, evangelical Christians. The list goes on.

Obama, with his shady ACORN and Corporate Anneberg Challenge experiences, especially with helping Bill Ayers radical friends get "educational" grants will be a master of sending government and taxpayer funds to friendly institutions to achieve his ends. And the media will look the other way, as they will be the beneficiary.

Obama is the Savior. Literally. To the Media....

Lets report this truthfully.

Very cool, and not suprising as Springfield is about as red as it gets. I'm not far from there and I am nervous about which way Missouri will swing. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Claire McCaskill got elected by lowering her margin of defeat in the rural areas and maximizing turnout in St. Louis and Kansas City. I hope we don't see a repeat of that scenario.

I've been thinking. It looks like BHO could very well be the next POTUS. These are the reasons I don't want that to happen.

1. I own a small business. BHO's tax plan would have a real impact on my ability to grow my business. Not this year and probably not next because the economy is having a real impact.

2. Pelosi and Reid. That should have been number one.

3. BHO's radical friends. I'm not convinced that Obama is philosophically as left leaning as Bill Ayers but he definitely is beholden to the likes of Ayers and the Move on's that have financed his campaign and helped start his political career.

4. I think BHO is lying about his association with Ayers. I really believe Ayers helped Obama write "Dreams."

5. Joe Biden

Looky heah!

Contrary to other polls, some of which show Obama ahead by double digits, the IBD/TIPP Poll shows a sudden tightening of Obama's lead to 3.7 from 6.0. McCain has picked up 3 points in the West and with independents, married women and those with some college. He's also gaining momentum in the suburbs, where he's gone from dead even a week ago to a 20-point lead. Obama padded gains in urban areas and with lower-class households, but he slipped 4 points with parents.

Especially for the jet jockeys:
[Link: www.lookingattheleft.com...]

That reminds me of the following paragraphs from Bill Whittle's Seeing The Unseen:

Now, picture yourself in this chair, at 40,000 feet, traveling at one and a half times the speed of sound. Now imagine that someone has painted the windows white - you are flying on instruments. Now imagine that not only do you have to be able to fly blind, by referencing these instruments, but that you also have to stare into that orange jack-o-lantern of a radar, and interpret a squiggle that will lead you to your target. Now imagine that in addition to not hitting the ground, or your wingman, and watching the squiggle, you also have to turn those switches on the right side panel to activate weapons systems, to overcome enemy countermeasures - without looking outside, as you hurtle through air at -40 degrees F, air so thin that should you lose pressure, you have about 4-6 seconds of consciousness before you black out and die.

I maintain that the instant George W. Bush closed that canopy and took off on the first of his many solo hours in an F-102, it is quite impossible that he was either an idiot or a coward.

Here is a random question from the instrument rating exam I had to pass a few years ago.

What should be the approximate elapsed time from the BOSEMAN (BZN) VOR to the DUBOIS (DBS) VORTAC if the wind is 24 knots from 260 degrees and your intended True Air Speed is 185 knots? (The magnetic variation is 17deg. E)

A. 33 minutes
B. 37 minutes
C. 39 minutes

(It's C., obviously)

If he had been a civilian rather than military pilot, Dubya would have had to have passed 60 questions like this with at least 70% correct. Questions on weather, radio communications, mechanical systems, aerodynamics, pilot physiology, airspace, navigation and a hundred other things. But, since he was military, he also had to know how to operate that primitive in-flight radar, plus weapons systems, rules of engagement, electronic warfare, hydraulics, fuel systems - it goes on and on.

People like Michael Moore and Bill Maher and Keith Olberman would not be able to figure out how to close the canopy on an F-102. These people would be weeping with fear when those afterburners light up and you barrel down that runway hoping that engine doesn't flame out and roll you inverted into the asphalt, or when you're rocketing through the soup at 300mph watching two little needles chase each other, praying the next thing you see out the window is a runway and not a mountain goat.

6. From what we know of Obama's law background, he is, like most leftists, a legal deconstructionist. For deconstructionists a text has no meaning in and of itself. It only has subjective meaning to each person or a group. Obama will appoint SCOTUS justices like Harry "the Constitution Means Whatever Five of Us Says It Means" Blackmun or Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who explicitly says that she is guided by "enlightened world opinion" rather than the words of dead white males. Do you want rule by law or rule by subjective opinion?

7. Obama has said he will make drastic cuts in military programs and the development of new weapons, including purely defensive ones. Do we really want to decimate our military the way Carter did?

I just wanted to say that last presidential election season, I spent it here with you guys. A lot has happened since then, I moved from West Texas to Germany, I bought a Sachsen Anhaltiner Deutsche Warmblut mare (who is going to cost me 10K to ship back to the states but I have to because I love her) and started riding again, mostly dressage and sport jumping.

So it seems, like last time, the whole thing is a nail biter. I already voted by mail, and only once like a good conservative. It doesn't really matter because my home county in Texas will go 75/25 McCain. For some reason I find the best links and the most fun here at LGF when it comes to election commentary.

Anyhow, thought I'd check in with y'all again and sort of re-introduce myself. I think it's great that after four long years, many of the same folks are still around.

5. Joe Biden

There is more but I would be interested in what others here might add.

6. Violating the Logan act, and playing Prez by asking Iraqi govn't officials not to draw down troop numbers until after the election, all the while insisting that he was always against the war.

7. My new husband just left for Iraq. Thanks, B.O., for playing politics with his and our friends lives. Oh, and eff you in the ear.

This is homecoming week at the local high school and although my daugher graduated last spring, some of her friends who are still in high school rolled our yard the other night. At any rate, she brought home an air soft pistol last night in case any of them pull a repeat. Fortified by alcohol (I'd had a LARGE margarita at the Mexican restaurant earlier), I let her shoot me with it in the back. There is nothing soft about it. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot anybody messing with my McCain/Palin sign, though!

Went into the old Juvenile court building a couple of months ago on a "treasure hunt" for decent furniture and supplies abandoned on site, and I actually did pretty good, picking up a 700 watt APC UPS being used for a door stop. But I noted all these dots covering furniture, walls and especially chairs. The dots looked like the same material as "silly string" I deduced the SWAT and tactical teams had been using the building for training exercises and the dots were the remains of soft bullets. Spent the last couple of days helping out our Emergency management people training on procedures for the new Emergency management center. And yes the cops are worried about riots on Nov. 5th....

And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness.
The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow.
When he was twelve years old, they found him in the temple in the City of Chicago, arguing the finer points of community organisation with the Prophet Jeremiah and the Elders. And the Elders were astonished at what they heard and said among themselves: “Verily, who is this Child that he opens our hearts and minds to the audacity of hope?”

5. Joe Biden

There is more but I would be interested in what others here might add.

All of those reasons are valid ones. But I think that the primary reason to oppose The One is that, like it or not, he represents the mainstream of Democratic party philosophy as it exists today. In all major respects.

A. Yes, his ACORN-related activities made him a major player in creating the FM-Squared wipeout- but he couldn't have done it without the help of Chris Dodd and Barney Frank, and the silence of the Democrats who spent fifteen years covering all of the above's a$$es when anyone wanted to actually look at the books.

B. His constant bob-and-weave on energy policy is also very much in the Dem mainstream. They are so beholden to the primitivist anti-technology, anti-civilization deep-ecology crowd that they don't dare ever even suggest actually doing anything. Which means that in a few years, the entire nation will look like CA did just before "Grayout" Davis got pink-slipped. If we're lucky, and it isn't worse.

C. His remarks about "bitter people.... cling(ing) to guns and religion" is Dem dogma right down the line. About the only thing that the average "enlightened elitist" of the type that runs the Democratic Party hates more than religion is gun ownership. It's interesting to me to watch local Dems tie themselves into philosophical knots as they simultaneously rail about "crazy Christians" and "Zionist Jews" while trying to explain how the only thing wrong with Islam is that they're "fighting back" against all the evils the West has perpetrated on them going back to the Crusades. (Then I give them the timeline of the Arab invasions starting three centuries before the First Crusade, and they tend to stalk off in a huff.) As for gun owners, I have yet to meet a leader-type Dem who thinks they are even qualified to vote- most consider "gun owner" to be semantically equivalent to "bigoted a-hole Neanderthal".

D. Biden is the gift that keeps on giving. As I've said before, if you want to know what the Dems really intend to do to you, just listen to Joe the Mouth long enough, and sooner or later he'll blurt it out, just to prove how smart he is. It amazes me that his party doesn't have "handlers" following him around to hustle him out when he goes into "Let me tell you" mode, because you can bet the next thing out of his mouth will be something the Dems really, really don't want you to know until after the election. Add in Biden's well-known penchant for confusing reality with the world inside his head, and I'm convinced that Obambi didn't pick him for VP on the basis of him being a candidate for MENSA. More like, "You'd better hope I stay healthy, otherwise this effing loon will be calling the shots."

I could go on, but those are foremost on my mind these days.

cheers

I saw American Carol last night. With out going into spoilers, I will say not as funny as the past efforts from this team.

But I think I know why. In movies like Airplane, you have 10 minutes "the plane is in trouble," 115 minutes jokes and 10 minutes "saving the plane." Lot's of room for the gags.

But in American Carol, there was a story that kept advancing, with new levels every 10-15 minutes, so, more time had to be spent with plot advancement, cutting out some of the pure "silly" time available.

Over all, when it was funny it was spot on humor, just not as non-stop.

I had a crystal-worshiping moonbat with me, she loved it, so, that's saying something.

Woohoo! Vacation Time. I'm headed for San Antonio, Texas to stroll the river walk and get a few days away from politics. Okay, maybe a few hours. I have thought of removing the Nobama 08 sticker from my cars rear window as San Antonio is a Democratic stronghold.

I plan on voting early today, but it may have to wait until next Tuesday. I want to avoid the demonic-rats here in El Paso as they really glare at the Nobama sticker and the McCain/Palin sticker that sits on top of it.

I note that the race seems to be tightening in some battle ground states. I suspect McCain could very well win this if we all go vote and take a friend to the polls too.

Florida Lady, I agree. I really admire Michael Barone though, so I was disappointed on his take on the election.

Stop being disappointed and start taking some action then. Go to your local McCain/Palin HQ, do some phone-bank work, GOTV, etc.

I won't give up because some pundits say it can't be done.

In 1989, I was a single mom looking to find a way to make a living while raising my two kids and going to college. I was advised by the college counselor to just get an associate's degree in bookkeeping, as a 4-year degree would be too hard to get with 2 children to raise.

Screw that . . . it took a lot of work, but got my CPA & MBA in 1997, and 3 years ago, I made partner in my CPA firm.

I'm not a quitter. When others say it can't be done, I look to find ways to do it.

So . . . I vow to do everything I can to help McCain/Palin get elected until the polls close Nov 4.

/Please excuse the personal story . . . not trying to brag, simply trying to motivate with a real-life experience story.

Still would be useless. Whatever "hippie" is involved, Obama will just throw him under the bus, claiming it isn't the hippie he knew, or say that it is irrelevant because of Obama's age at the time. The only way this kind of thing will work is if Obama himself is demonstrated to have participated in radical activities during his adult public years, and then lied about it. Finally some great news from Saudi Arabia. Strategy Page is the only one who has picked up on the story and I have found SP 100 percent reliable.

I'd feel more sanguine about this if I didn't know that the Shah tried something very similar in 1976-77. Which resulted in the Iranian Islamic Revolution as the clerics banded together behind Khomeini and basically seized power with the help of every splinter group in the country, including the Communists.

All of whom they promptly massacred (in the 1980-82 timeframe) once their control was firmly established and they no longer needed them as muscle for the odd embassy takeover/hostage seizure.

If this happens in Saudi Arabia, it could be Iran all over again, on steroids. Because like Iran, SA's military is extremely well-equipped with US, British, and French-made equipment.

The one bright spot there is that an "unholy alliance" between SA and Iran is a low-weighted probability. Iran is majority Shiite, SA is majority Sunni. Iran is Persian, SA Arab. There is bad blood there going back literally for centuries.

OTOH, an alliance between SA and an increasingly-radicalized (and also Western-armed) Egypt is quite probable. A rebirth of Nasser's United Arab Republic (UAR) would not be out of the question.

Either way, a radicalized Saudi Arabia would be a serious danger to both Israel and Iraq. Not to mention Jordan, the Emirates, and the Trucial States. To say nothing of the Persian Gulf as a whole.

If the Ibn Saud family is serious about this, they need to get very serious about it, up front. And have their forces, military and purely social, in hand right from the start.

Pretty far. His first 100 days are going to be very interesting. I'm wondering if he's going to delay his giant social programs until the economy improves or if he's just going to steam ahead towards reinventing American society.

I'd say let's see if he gets there first. This is presidential election redux, the same polling, same shit, round three.

They did vote to kille 4 Senators and about 12 Congressmen.

376 scratch  Wed, Oct 22, 2008 3:17:40pm

OK, since this is an open thread, here's a little story.

I served jury duty yesterday. In my city, that means being assigned a number, and sitting in the courthouse all day. Periodically, they call a range of numbers to go to a particular courtroom to begin jury selection.

At the beginning of the day, they call jurors up in groups to be paid a small amount to cover expenses. Last year, I waived my jury pay, which turned out to be far more difficult than just taking the money. It occurred to me that it would be nice if jurors could, at the very least, waive their pay easily, and even better if they could select from a couple charities in the city to donate it too. So yesterday I mentioned my idea to the deputy commissioner of jurors. She said they had actually considered that a few years ago, but had not implemented it. When I told her how difficult it was to waive my pay last year, she said that they had improved the process. I asked her for a card and told her that I would like to follow up on this idea, because I think it would be good for the city. Also, she was hot, but I digress.

So when the time came to receive my pay, I again indicated my desire to waive it. Turns out the process was similar to before, only slightly more difficult, because this time when I was sent down the hall to another office, they actually did not have the required paperwork there, as they did last time. I had to return to the original point to fill out the paperwork. Oh well.

Later in the day, for the first time in my three consecutive years of jury duty, my number was in the range of numbers called to report to a courtroom for jury selection. But when the roll was called in the courtroom, my number was not included. So I was sent back to the waiting room, and eventually, at the end of the day, I went home without serving on a jury. Why? Because when I had opted out of payment, my name had inadvertently been removed from the master list of available jurors.

BTW, my city and state are overwhelmingly Democratic. I'm not sayin'....I'm just sayin'.

I know. That begs the question- if this is "business as usual" (which, as you state, it certainly looks like), what makes it different this time?

Level of engagement?

Intensity?

The royal family is just seriously pissed-off at these clowns this time?

The line about increasing science education is what I find interesting. It's been a sort of unwritten rule that Arab states send their prospective scientists overseas to study, thereby gaining the benefits of having a well-educated scientific establishment without the problem of having the curriculum subjected to the scrutiny of imams. (There have been several threads on LGF going back several years on the rather fanciful relationship between Islamic dodctrine and real-world scince, so I won't go into it here.) If the Ibn Saud family intends to introduce serious scientific education in SA's schools, this will most likely bring them into direct conflict with the clerics who run the system- and make no mistake about it, they do.

Dohrn's love of violence reached a level bordering on madness. Speaking to a Weather Underground "war council" in Michigan in 1969, Dohrn gave a three-fingered "fork salute" to mass murderer Charles Manson. Calling Manson's victims the "Tate Eight," Dohrn gloated over the fact that actress Sharon Tate, who was pregnant at the time, had been stabbed with a fork in her womb. "Dig it. First they killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in the same room with them, they even shoved a fork into a victim's stomach! Wild!"

"If, on the other hand, He does exist, and you live as though He doesn't, you may just get one Hell of an unpleasant surprise when you exit. Literally."

I went to see it just support the box-office numbers.

I'm sick of getting 12 year-olds incorrectly texting me on my work phone! It's actually kind of funny. The one I just got said "I love u".

Be sure to log that - life gets really weird sometimes.

No issue. Walter can continue with his lame "pssst psst" posts if he wants.

Iran captures 'nuclear spy pigeons'

Two alleged "spy pigeons" were apprehended near Iran's nuclear facility at Natanz, according to Iranian media reports.

A report in the Etemad Melli newspaper said security forces found metal bands and invisible string attached to the birds, one of which was found this week, and the other earlier in the month.

The source quoted in the report declined to give further description and did not say what would happen to the birds.

re: #368 Fritz_Katz

A religious group should get a counter-ad: "Pascal says that's a BIG 'probable' -- I'd worry if I were you!".

Pascal's Wager? You're right. It's safer just to believe in Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

IIRC, it was LoBianco (the grocer) who they stuck the fork in, not Sharon Tate. They cut Sharon's baby out, IIRC.

Here's a copy of her death certificate.

More than 3,200 supporters -- most of them educators -- have signed a petition protesting what they say is the "demonization of Professor William Ayers," asserting that his violent actions as the co-founder of the Weather Underground were just "history."

Noam Chompsky has not signed this list. It is dead to me.
