Newsweek Reporter Fantasized About 'Taking Out' Rudy Giuliani

Politics | Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 5:55:24 pm PDT

You’re not going to believe this one. Newsweek reporter Michael Hastings, while covering the presidential campaign, entertained fantasies about “taking out” Rudy Giuliani.

And now he’s talking openly about it, and about his underhanded dealings with the John McCain campaign, as he pretended to be friendly and sympathetic while looking for every negative angle possible.

He doesn’t even seem to be self-conscious about revealing what a dishonest, biased scumbag he is.

HACK: CONFESSIONS OF A PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN REPORTER.

The reality is: I quickly realized Rudy was a maniac. I had a recurring fantasy in which I took him out during a press conference (it was nonlethal, just something that put him out of commission for a year or so), saving America from the horror of a President Giuliani. If that sounds like I had some trouble being “objective,” I did. Objectivity is a fallacy. In campaign reporting more than any other kind of press coverage, reporters aren’t just covering a story, they’re a part of it—influencing outcomes, setting expectations, framing candidates—and despite what they tell themselves, it’s impossible to both be a part of the action and report on it objectively. In some cases, you genuinely like the candidate you’re covering and you root for him, because over the long haul you come to see him as a human being. For a long time, this was John McCain’s ace in the hole with the press, whom he referred to as “my base.” Reporters rode along with him, and he joked with them, and that went a long way toward shaping the tone of their coverage. (Last January a group of reporters asked McCain’s staff to make McCain campaign press T-shirts for them.) And because your success is linked to the candidate’s, you want to be with a winner, because that’s the story that makes the paper or the magazine or gets you on TV.

In my case, it was easy to despise Rudy. I’d spent two years covering the war in Iraq. I had a brother who was currently deployed there as an infantry platoon leader, and I had Iraqi friends who were now living as refugees. To listen to a man so casually invoke violence and warfare—a man who’d never set foot in Iraq or in any war zone—was troubling indeed. I wasn’t alone in the press corps. I don’t think I spoke to another journalist who ever said one good thing about the man. What did we say? We made fun of his divorces and his wives, that he’d married a second cousin, that he surrounded himself with corrupt cronies, that he had a piss-poor relationship with his children, etc. We talked about his megalomania and his cynical exploitation of September 11.

Still, I ate meals with staffers and campaign managers. I tried to say things that would make me appear sympathetic to Rudy while not technically lying. (“Wow, he sure seems popular.” “I was in New York on 9/11, and I have to be honest with you, I was glad Rudy was in charge.”) I tried to stay out of any discussion about issues and to just repeat the mantra to myself: I am here to observe and record, observe and record.

I wouldn't mind it so much if the guy just came out and admitted -- BEFORE he wrote the stories -- that he had a gut-level antipathy toward Rudy. Or, if he said he was a knee-jerk liberal.

But to pretend to be objective is ... disgusting.

All reporters should wear their partisanship proudly. Let the left be leftists -- let the right be conservative.

The NYT should declare itself the mouthpiece of the left. And then, this reporting would be expected.

We're all editorialists now. Post-modernity has destroyed the myth of objectivity.

Have you noticed that lefties who cling intellectually to post-modernity are the first to jettison it when they fake being objective? When it is to their advantage, they pretend to be objective.

Interesting that he found it so offensive that Giuliani would be talking about war and death and the like while not having served in Iraq.

Making troop decisions is part of any President's job description; did he have similar problems with Clinton deploying troops to the Balkans and elsewhere, despite his not having served a nanosecond in uniform, or is this antipathy only reserved for Republicans--and for those who think seriously about genuine threats to America?

Why are you using logic here. That is only gonna confuse the issue?

I remember a story from the NYT the day after the 2004 election and reported how the Kerry campaign called all the big networks and begged them to hold off announcing that Bush had carried Ohio due to recounts. They all readily complied. In 2002 all the major networks and newsgroups held a meeting and announced a joint declaration that media would no longer broadcast images from the 911 disaster citing that images only incited American citizens into attacking American Muslims. re: #84 Ozark Mountain Daredevil

Let's see...

A story about Cindy McCain's pain pill addiction 20+ years ago.

Reporters going through dumpsters in Alaska looking for dirt on Sarah and her family.

Joe the Plumber being investigated for daring to ask a question.

But The One™ admits to drug use, including snorting coke, hangs with terrorists envisioning killing 25 million Americans without blinking an eye, attends a racist church for over 20 years, and they're not the least bit interested in that.

Nah, there's no media bias here.

The good news is we're forming our own, alternative, media. We don't need the MSM. In fact, we should encourage others to try our media as well as theirs.

Edwards was right in this one regard, that when it comes to the media, there are TWO, now one -- ours and theirs.

I'm with you, mate!

None of this is surprising or even newsworthy. Where is the New York Times or even Newsweek to write up this hack thug who fantasizes about attacking presidential candidates?

Once again, the ever-tolerant left rears its ugly head and shows just how awfully intolerant they are.

Any remote possibility that the SS will be knocking on this guys door? If you qualify your hate-speech as a fantasy, does that automatically get you off the hook?

I know for a fact if some journalist wrote this tripe about Obama, he'd be in serious trouble.

The bad news is that a whole lot of people don't use the internet to get information like Lizard's do.

For the majority of the people, the internet is an extension of their palte of entertainment options.

If WE want to reach ordinary people with our message, we've got to bring it to them in whatever form(s) they view/read. I think we're doing it.

Remember, Walter, we've got a huge under-the-radar network of people who are active in civil society and don't look to the government for answers. Our websites will be known word-of-mouth. We don't need Obama's skillful manipulation (framing) because we really do have connections to other Americans. Well, if the NYT is going to "declare" it had better do it damn soon--ad revenue for its news media group is down a hefty 16% for the latest quarter alone. The "Slimes" is rapidly bleeding to death and nothing short of a tourniquet in the form of a government bailout is going to save it.

Hell, "Pinch" might as well demand the government take over his paper--nothing would change there except all the employees would get "ObamaCare" instead.

I just heard on Larry Elders show that Joe Biden threatened to leak secrets to the media in order to prevent President Reagan from carrying out secret missions.

True?

Found it - WSJ:

A major reason we failed to detect the 9/11 attacks in advance was because, beginning in the 1970s, Congress launched a major public attack on the intelligence community. Mr. Biden, for example, was one of 17 senators to vote on Oct. 2, 1974, to make all covert operations (even espionage in some cases) unlawful. In 1986, he bragged in a New Republic interview that he'd personally blocked planned covert operations during the Reagan administration simply by threatening to leak them. (That statement calls to mind John Jay's observation, in Federalist No. 64, that because Congress could not be trusted to keep secrets, the Constitution left the president "able to manage the business of intelligence as prudence might suggest.")

Very true. Ask the average person voting for Obama who William "Billy" Ayers is and they will say "I have no idea." or "that happened when Obama was 8." These people have no business voting in a presidential election. If you can't bother to be informed then please don't bother to vote.

Well, Murdoch isn't all that conservative. And I'm all tired of Jews who think that the Times is in any way reflective of "Jewish interests."

Tell you friends at shul if they think Murdoch is conservative, all they need to do is look at his paper "The Sun" in England, and you'll shoot down that theory.

Hasting's writing is described:

The proposal's not of the caliber one would expect of a nationally-published journalist, nor a top-tier literary agency, as our source describes: "I couldn't stand it," she says. "I wondered if he's a stringer, as the writing was not good. Also, it seems like it wasn't even proofread, either, which is unusual for Wylie. Their stuff is usually very clean, so I wonder if this wasn't a rush on their end, too.re: #168 Colonel Panik

Subscribes to Newsweek and Time

"Objectivity is a fallacy. In campaign reporting more than any other kind of press coverage, reporters aren’t just covering a story, they’re a part of it—influencing outcomes, setting expectations, framing candidates—and despite what they tell themselves, it’s impossible to both be a part of the action and report on it objectively."

I am a Question Authority. Ask me any question, and I will give you an authoritative answer. Maybe not accurate, but authoritative.

One question I have, since I was arguing with a moonbat earlier at another place who asked me (regarding the alleged robbery/assault on the young McCain volunteer), "John McCain must investigate and find out who attacked this young woman, or he has no credibility - how can he find Osama bin Laden if he cannot find a simple robber?" To which I replied that Barack Obama himself didn't investigate the alleged death threats against him a few months ago, that these were the jurisdiction of the US Secret Service in conjunction with the FBI.

My question: Isn't a threat of bodily injury/death against an elected official a federal crime? If it's specific enough, that is. Like "I'm going to kill you!", as opposed to "I wish someone would kill him!"?

As I was pointing out to my girlfriend earlier tonight, there are many, many better avenues to attack Obama on. The courts are not going to remove Obama on some technicality, but even if they wanted to they couldn't. Illegal Aliens can be standing in line to be deported and give birth and the child is an instant citizen. This is not a practical issue.

Besides which, I'd say the fact that he's friends with a genocidal Communist terrorist is a better reason to disqualify him. Fight the battles that are winnable, not the ones that make you feel like you are doing something.

What if the NYT's endorsed someone but not one read it? Oh wait that happens already. Never mind.

Got that right:

The New York Times said it still expects to manage its debt obligations. At the end of the quarter, the company had $46 million in cash and about $1.1 billion in debt.

September revenue fell 8 percent, and news media group ad revenue dropped 14 percent.

On Thursday, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services cut its rating on the Times to junk after Moody's Investors Service said it might do the same because of revenue declines and risks associated with paying its debt.

319 LeePro  Thu, Oct 23, 2008 7:02:26pm

WAY-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y OT, but you gotta hear this!

This afternoon my husband happened to glance out the window just in time to see a City Of Germantown (TN) utility truck driving off. Then he saw our McCain/Palin sign lying in the mud (it's been raining since last night) with a little red tag on it. He went out, picked it up and read the tag, which was notifying us that we have violated a(n) (until now unknown) city ordinance forbidding signs within 10 feet of the curb. It also advised us that we would be fined $500 a day for each day of "non-compliance." Now we don't live in the heart of downtown Germantown --- we live in a very quiet little neighborhood, a lot like a gazillion other quiet little neighborhoods all over our growing little metropolis. In an election year there are always campaign signs everywhere. Nobody cares --- and they're gone shortly after voting day.

But to get back to the story... I called the mayor's office (as I have in the past --- she's very nice and always calls back!), and, of course had to leave my name and number, but I did say why I was calling.

Then we got in the car to cruise around and see if any "other" signs had been trashed by the city of Germantown. In our neighborhood only McCain signs were pulled up/tossed. None of the local election signs had been touched --- couldn't compare with B.O. signs, because there were none within the 3- to 5-mile radius I drove (heehee)!

At that point, I had to leave for my dental appointment, so we drove back to drop off hubby, and lo and behold! there was the same fat bastard knocking on my door! When he saw us pull up, he stepped off my porch, picked up the sign we had propped up there (at least 50 feet from the street!), and proceeded to walk off with it. I virtually leapt from my car and demanded, "Where the hell are you going with my sign!?!?!?!" He turned around and laughed at me! ! ! ! ! Of course I demanded to know why he had thrown our sign in the mud in the first place, whereas he looked around and said, "Lady, your whole yard is mud." He also said that he was "required" to pull up the sign and lay it down. When I pointed out the obvious difference between "laying it down" in the grass where it was, and hurling it 15 feet into the yard to a really muddy spot under a tree (where grass won't grow!), he laughed again, paced off 10 feet and rammed my sign into the ground, bending the frame in the process. The he turned his back and headed back to his trusty truck. I stopped him one more time and asked for his name. He laughed again and reached in his pocket for his business card.

I wrote his truck number on the card and he left.

HERE'S WHAT HE DIDN'T KNOW:

One of our local news anchors is a long-time acquaintance of mine. I called him and reported the entire confrontation.

Long story, short: My husband will be on our local (10:00 Central time) channel 5 (our local NBC affiliate) news tonight, broadcasting a nasty little piece of political garbage --- that our own little city obviously promotes and/or condones trashing political signs they don't agree with!

Those of you not from around here might be able to find something about it at the channel 5 website, and if you're within their broadcast area, it'll be on the 10:00 news tonight.

320 notutopia  Thu, Oct 23, 2008 7:02:27pm

Why does this admittance surprize anyone? The ability to remove yourself when you loose that objectivity is the problem in our journalism.
What would happen if a MD refused to treat a patient based upon his patients conflicting beliefs? Why are people so amazed when Iranians receive
the best of care from Israeli Specialists when they are critical and enemies?
Because the basic tenet is in the oath of the profession which you take unto your yourself and your beliefs and they are taught this by mentors and made to adhere to it throughout their medical/surgical training.
The ability to stay objective and not become subjective is no different in Journalism. They just do not remove themselves when they have the option to do so, or realize they are violating their own principles. It's not a matter of life or death for them.

Others may be telling you this as well, but Germantown has no leg to stand on. If you have the gumption, it would be fun to take this to the Supreme Court.

re: #319 LeePro

There was a supreme court case I believe a while back that said cities and counties can not restrict political signs on private property. Home Owner Associations can depending on the state. In most areas the city has a utility easement but does not own the land next to the street, you would have to check your property survey to make sure, but usually the city property does not go much past the edge of the road.

re: #319 LeePro

Democratic Vote Fraud update:

Somehow, a full 98 percent of Michigan voters are registered. Sure.

And they're mostly Democrats. Surprised?

Democrats have made a concerted push to register voters this year, and it appears to have paid off. In Wayne County, registration is up 6.4 percent since January, to 1.44 million voters.

Counties that contain major universities also saw big jumps: 10 percent in Washtenaw, home to the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University; 8 percent in Ingham, where Michigan State University is located; 14 percent in Isabella, home of Central Michigan University; and 7 percent in Kalamazoo, site of Western Michigan University.

Overall, there were four times more new voters in heavily Democratic counties than in heavily Republican counties.

My question was inartfully stated, because I compacted a few separate posts into one catch-all question. But this idiot seemed to imply that John McCain couldn't keep his own staff safe, so how could he keep our country safe from bin Laden!

Just starting this thread, so I don't know what others have said, but.....

Is this not the strangest election ever? True, I didn't follow elections so closely before I had access to the internet and to LGF, Instapundit, Belmont Club, Ace of Spades, and Just One Minute, among others.

But in my entire long life I have never noticed so many truly stupid people and such bizarre statements coming from all parts of the MSM.

The unremitting hatred towards Bush. Where does that come from? The emphasis on total trivia, such as Sarah Palin's clothing bill. The lack of interest in terrorist attacks and in Iran's intentions. The acceptance of a third-rate character like Biden. The nonsensical adoration of Obama, who is really not that special, even as a speaker. The absurd statements like the Newsweek reporter quoted above. What a silly child. He was just mouthing off like a silly child, yet he has an audience of tens of millions. No embarrassment whatsoever.

What is going on with our civilization ? ? ? Too much cornstarch in our foods and that's why we're turning into fat happy slugs? Why so much interest in idiotic celebrities like Amy Winehouse et al ? ? ?

OK....ending rant now. But I would like some answers.

Thanks, Lizards.

Here is some detail:

Moody's expresses concern about N.Y. Times' debt

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- New York Times Co. shares swung Thursday after Moody's Investor Service placed the company's Baa3 senior unsecured debt and Prime-3 commercial-paper ratings on review for possible downgrade, falling more than 7% before rallying with the broader market in the last hour of trading.
The move came after New York Times said it would take a noncash third-quarter charge of as much as $150 million once it completes an assessment of the value of its New England media properties, including the Boston Globe, which have been severely hampered by the U.S. economic meltdown.
The company also said that overall print-advertising revenues at its newspapers, locked in a steady decline for some time, have remained tepid thus far in the fourth quarter.

The stock hit a new low, which matches their integrity and honesty, at $10.68 a share today. One more downgrade and they reach "junk" status.

Which fits.

Is this just another way to get at Trig Palin's "true" parentage? And when will The One release his records? I think Palin should explicitly refuse to release anything until Obama does.

I've read (from unreliable sources, LOL) The One™ has medical problems related to his drug use, and that's why he will not release them. The citizenship angle for his refusal to release them makes no sense, since they don't say anything about citizenship.

ORDINANCE 2007-3 – AMENDMENT TO THE GERMANTOWN SIGN ORDINANCE – MODIFICATION OF POLITICAL SIGN PROVISIONS IN SECTION 14-61 – FIRST READING/SET PUBLIC HEARING DATE
Mr. Whitehead stated U.S. Supreme Court had ruled placing certain municipal limitations on political signs as unconstitutional. The proposed amendment would remove all types of limitations placed on the political signs under the current ordinance. However, it would retain the prohibition on commercial and office lots, political signs and vacant residential lots. The ordinance would maintain the occupied residential lots being held applicable for political signs.
Motion by Ms. Hinely, seconded by Mr. Drinnon, to approve the amendment as presented on first reading and set a public hearing date of April 9, 2007.
ROLL CALL: Chism – yes, Drinnon – yes, Hinely – yes, Palazzolo-yes, Uhlhorn-yes. Motion approved.

It varies from state to state. In my state, only registered party members could vote in that party's primary. The law has since been changed to allow anyone to vote in a primary, but only for one party.

I registered as a Democrat years ago in order to vote in the Democrat primaries, I am probably still listed. That would explain why I get so much Obama crap in the mail and all the McCain crap is addressed to my son, who registered as a Republican.

Some states have what are called "closed" primary elections, in which only registered party members can vote for who will be their party's candidate in the general election. In Tennessee, where I live, we are an "open" primary state, so you just ask for the party's ballot you want when you arrive at the polling place during a primary election. (You have to choose, though. You can't vote in both party's primaries!)

Same as in Australia.

The DIFFERENCE is that voting to select party members is completely and ABSOLUTELY separate from one's vote in a general election.

Party voting is a private matter between individuals and the party of their choosing. A general election vote is completely anonymous and secret and is between the individual and the administrators of electoral powers. The Electoral Commission. NOTHING to do with political parties at all!

The former Federal Reserve chairman is in full-frontal legacy defense mode, and he's not doing a particularly convincing job.

I haven't voted in the democrat primary since 2000 but in some of the local races that is the only real choice but i have decided the donks are a problem for me even on the local level. In Chicagostan elections there is no primary race and no national party on the baliot all the canidates for alderman or mayor run against each other city wide offices and alderman have sept lists if some one gets 50% plus one vote they are elected if not the top two have a run off. city races are not run at the same time as county, state or national elections.

in city wide races i vote but mostly it is for the lesser of two evils moderate vs some kind of leftist as bad a mayor daley is the guy running against him is always to the left and much worse.

I usually don't either, but I did this year, for Mitt Romney, after Fred Thompson dropped out. He really disappointed me with his half-assed campaign.

Now I think he's advising McCain judging by the way his campaign is being run.

Rush said it best, as usual- We all will have to drag McCain over the finish line.

Mixing a primary vote with a general election vote and the stamping of cards with party affiliations is NOT a good idea,

Speaking of robo calls, and since this is a Giuliani thread, I got a robo call from Giuliani last night about democrats and how they will roll back laws that are tough on criminals.

Democrat constituents consist of criminals, any deviant group you can think of (GLBT for example), teachers unions, government workers, and other unions (organized crime). -- So why would some one not in one of these groups support them.

Stop saying that the Catholic Church is the Beast of Revalations, and linking the Pope with the Anti-Christ?

Ridiculous. The divisions between Prot and Catholics are nothing like the divisions between the theological left and right that runs through demonations, not between them.

The RCC and Prots have been working together for decades. Ecumenism is bottom up, from the pews, not top down.

Could some kind soul please explain to me why one has to register as a follower of a political party?

In Australia one registers to VOTE. What one does in the voting booth and who one supports isn't anyone's business.

I am confused. Why do you need to specify being Dem, Rep or independent?

In the U.S. in most voting districts, one registers as the follower of a party in order to vote in the primary election. In the general election, one can vote a straight ticket or a mixed ticket. Most people probably vote a mixed ticket, depending on the nature of their local elections.

It seems to me that there are way more disadvantages than advantages. I wish they would close them up, and also go to an alternative voting system that would avoid vote splits.

re: #462 Aussie Infidel

I understand that point.

It is the same in the US. You aren't locked into any vote based on your political party. The primary process isn't related to the general election.

I'm impressed with, for his age, he is so influenced by Randy. Ozzy's had many guitar players, but there was only one Randy. I bet that was a blast to see a kid ripping it up like that. I am, by the way, constantly astounded by the moonbat belief that "the government" (usually without any concept of the differences and different jurisdictions of local, state and federal authorities) is all-powerful (it's not) and should be all-powerful (it shouldn't)--while they simultaneously complain about government oppression and intrusiveness (usually imaginary).

Intrusiveness and oppressiveness go hand in hand with great power; they are inseparable from each other. The answer, of course, is that moonbats believe that the largely imaginary powers they ascribe to government will not be oppressive if only they are in moonbat hands.

Yes sir, I'll agree with you. They truly do not understand what they are wishing for - if the government had the power they ascribe to it, we would live in a totalitarian hellhole.

Then actually DO SOMETHING stop belly aching or i'll see you in 5 generations or so when the socialist system collapses as it always does eventually!

Sorry, I am doing something! Don't yell at me, nor at most of the posters here. We're all doing what we can to make sure Obama is not the next POTUS. We're not the ones you need to confront, mate.

You are preaching to the choir here, Oz.

This is Michael Hastings:

Your text to link...

I suspect the only way this guy could "take out" Rudy Giuliani would be if he offered to buy dinner.

Sounds like a hell of an endorsement for Giuliani. Too bad we didn't hear this during the primary season.

CJ. With all due respect, I question your 'source', not the meat of this story. I thought we were supposed to home in on facts. GQ. Really?

I'd rather see you do an expose on the Obama Odinga mess. Truly.

re: #453 MandyManners

Shit!

But how can they do that, if the SCOTUS said it's unconstitutional...?

Rhetorical question. I know you don't have the answer to that. None of us does, I suppose.

re: #473 Hobbes

Unfortunately, your friend at the station was apparently overruled. The coverage of your situation on the station web site sucked. Pretty hard to beat City Hall.

I agree. Unfortunately, the interviewer was not my friend acquaintance (see my original comment --- heh!) at the station. There was an obvious lack of understanding of the underlying shit --- throwing my sign in the mud, laughing at me, etc.

What can you expect anyway? Like I said, they (the station) are our local NBC affiliate!

My husband was way cool, though, don't you think?

Your husband has awesome eyes!

He was very cool as well. :D

I watched twice to be sure I wasn't hallucinating those eyes!

The reporter and the old fart admin (hope he isn't a friend of yours - ha ha) harping on the rules made me feel ALMOST like an anarchist. :D

Hey - this jackass just recited the oath that left-wing "journalists" take when they get a job at Newsweek or the NY times.

Raise your left and and repeat after me:

That post just went into my 'favorites' bin. Thank you very much.

Most journalists gossip more than they think.

On Michael Hastings' fantasies, The Tacky Secret Garden of "Reporters" would never be a good read!

- Love Rudi!

What a snarky little turd.

New Zealand after 9 hellish years of socialist NZ Labour Party rule is due for a change in about 2 weeks!

You think Key can knock off Helen (was in Wellington last week).

Cheers

Sorry, do you reckon Key can knock off Helen?

Was in Wellington last week and saw the debate.

Frightening woman - should keep her away from small children and pets!

Cheers

I don't really think Rudy has anything to worry about. If this pencil necked geek really tried to "take him out" Rudy would simply kick his *ss. It's too bad Rudy isn't in McCain's place. He would feel no compunction about playing the attack dog role, and certainly wouldn't have passed up the opportunities given during the debates. Rudy calling out The One on his terrorist linked friends (Ayers and the PLO mouthpiece) would have carried credibility.

A shame that people didn't take the long view, and decided against G primarily because of the abortion thing.

Get ready for your beneficent socialist overlords. At least 4 years of a systematic dismantling of our system. A second social security system, and no more 401ks. That's great. Retreat from the front in the war on radical Islam. Great. Here we come France. We'll have "youths" torching cars, and calls for "understanding the root causes." We'll have Ayers and Chomsky inspired foreign policy.

But at least we didn't nominate a guy that wandered off the ranch over one hot button issue.

Priorities.
