I wonder how many of the people who have been poo-pooing the [alleged] level of hate and vitriol at the McCain rallies are gonna line up and shell out their money to see people slowly and horribly mutilated and tortured to death in Saw V ?

I see your all down here in the dead thread discussing strategies for winning moonbats over to McCain so here's how I switched my two local nutcases to our side. First, I patiently listened to their insane theories about how Bush brought down the World Trade Center or imprisoned millions of innocent at Gitmo or eavesdropped on everyone's phone conversations, nod approvingly, and say uh-huh.(trust me this is the hardest part of the plan. I threw up little in my mouth during this stage.) Next, tell them the only reason Bush got away with their favorite conspiracy is because the Republicans controlled both Congress and the White House. Then remind them that if Barack wins Democrats will control both the WH and Congress and Obama will be able to get away with the same stuff Bush got away with. Explain to them that both parties are equally corrupt and that the only way to stop the corruption is to have congress controlled by one party and the WH by the other. Finally, tell them that Barack will try to to pull [their favorite conspiracy theory here] since he'll have a Democratic congress to enable him.
I know it's stupid but it's how moonbats think and I've used this line of argument to convince 2 of them to vote McCain.

And in this group he will lose. Obama's GOTV campaign was their hope, and they've done well, but in the end, they will lose.
The established voters are middle age and older. The youth vote has always been touted as a "game changer" by the dems, but this group has always under performed.

Economics. They know that they are the beast of burden for the bail outs and all the aging boomers about to bust Social Security.
Some of the stats I saw (today...somewhere..it's midnight and the brain hurts) show that not that huge a margin of the youth vote favors BHO, and in the south and southwest, it leans to McCain.

Possibly the most disturbing conversations I have had lately are with my very conservative (R) friends whose opinions I respect. Well, he should be the underdog, by a wide margin, if you think that the average Amercian so hates ChimpyMcBushitler that there is no way in hell they are going to vote (R). Obama should be sailing away with this election. If you believe current polling data, seems pretty clsoe, so that is good for McCain.

I posted this a couple days ago and I believe it explains why the polls incorrectly explain why Obama seems ahead
Much speculation has been made here about why the polls are incorrectly favoring Obama including zombie's excellent essay and many other's comments. I would just like to add $.02
The first question pollster's want answered is the party affiliation of the person being interviewed. They discover this either by looking at voter registration or directly asking during the phone call. This roughly breaks down 36% Democrat, 27% Republican, 24% independent, 13% other/undecided.
Next the pollster wants to know who the individual is planning voting for.
Finally, the statisticians weigh the responses based on how many respondents belong too each party. Example.
Out of the 100 Democrats 90 say they are voting for Obama and 10 for McCain so the pollster multiplies 90 by 36% (the percentage of Democrats the believe are in the country) and gets 3240 for Obama. Then they multiply 10 by 36% and get 360 for McCain.
They do the same for the Republicans. Out of 100 Republicans 90 are pro-McCain and 10 are for Obama. 90 times 27% (the estimated number of Republicans) of equals 2430 for McCain. 10 times 27% means 270 for Obama
For this example lets say the independents break evenly so it's 50 out of 100 votes for each. 50 times 24% is 1200 for each. Also assume the undecided remain undecided.
Then the polling company adds all the numbers for each candidate and divides by 100.
So for Obama 3240+270+1200=4710. 4710/100=47.1%.
For McCain 360+2430+1200=3990. 3990/100=39.9%
Voila 7.2% Obama lead. Normally this formula works pretty well, however there are at least three things wrong with it this election cycle. First is operation chaos wildly exaggerates the number of registered Democrats. Second, the PUMAs, they still consider themselves Democrats and they too inflate the (D) numbers and tilt the numbers toward the Democrat candidate, Obama, despite the fact that most of the 5 million of them would crawl over broken glass to vote against him. The final problem is with one of the assumptions I made to simplify the math, namely that undecided/independents would break evenly, so far this year the independents have broken decisively against Obama.

The question is which of the two candidates do you like better.....and neither is bush. Like I said, I know that people let this affect the way they think, but I just don't get it

Much has been written about the unreliability of the polls. As they are, the race is very close.
I think McCain will win, because the disaffected PUMA/working class/Catholic Democrats voting for McCain will outweigh the new/youth/ACORN fraud vote for Obummer. Plus, Palin has rallied the GOP base big time.

Seriously?
I voted for Bush twice and I like the guy, but I only have one vote, and I'm in a fairly red state, although its being contested this year.
I consider myself optimistic but a realist also and I don't rule out that McCain can win, I just think its a VERY hard task.

See, you're falling into a trap. You're thinking logically, and you're projecting that logic onto all your fellow citizens / voters. I think that is a mistake. A lot of people who vote, do not think, or at least do not think rationally.
Anecdotal evidence warning:
I personally know people, who live their lives under "conservative values," but they don't know, or realize it. Yet, they vote Democrat. It's like a programmed response, Pavlov, etc.
I don't understand it, either, nor can I explain it, either. But, it is observable, so I do not deny it exists.

Had a rather interesting discussion last week at a bar in Zurich. It was completely empty (yeah a little early in the day but what can you do) except for two bar tenders. One was a gentleman from Bosnia and the other was a woman from Jerusalem.
Out of nowhere the very nice man asks my friend and I who we are going to vote for in the election. Not taking that bait my friend answered the question by asking what his thoughts on the election were. He went off on Bush and McCain and said that Obama was the one. The woman then said that she actually didn't think the Bush presidency was that bad and he looked at her like she had three heads. She said she didn't trust Obama to protect Israel and that therefor McCain was her man. He politely mumbled to himself because he just could not believe what he was hearing from his coworker.
The two of us politely ordered another round and left it at that. Wasn't expecting that when all we were doing was trying to get our drink on at 5 in the afternoon.

Why because the most people that are voting (not the 30% solid red or the 30% solid blue) generally don't like Bush, therefore they are looking to go in a different direction, McCain being a member of the same party as Bush doesn't seem like a different enough direction.

Pardon me for a moment....
Keeping with your business news, I have some delicious business news I'm enjoying myself, and that I'd like to share.
In 1997, Michael Dell was asked what he would do if he were the CEO of Apple Computers (keep in mind that Apple and its stock were doing poorly at that point, and the first iMac was still about a year away). His response was, "I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders."
So, where are Apple and Dell 11 years later at the end of FY2008?
Apple's total cash on hand: $24,490,000,000 ($24.49 billion)
Dell's total market capitalization (that is, the total value of Dell's stock) at closing on 10/23/08: $23,500,000,000 ($23.5 billion)
In short, Apple is now at a point where it could buy all of Dell's stock with just the cash it has on hand!

I'm not bashing President Bush, I am a Bush supporter, seriously, I know most of you think of me as a 'moby', but its not true.
I just think the rest of the country more than bashes President Bush, they just flat out don't like the guy, and I can't see how its somehow irrelevant to the 2008 election.
Personally I think the election rides on the battleground states. Pennsyvlania, Ohio, Florida, Virginia, same ones as 2004 if McCain can pull out most of those he wins :)

Lizards- I just want to share with you that GOP organizations in various ACORN infested states ARE taking this issue very seriously and are actively engaged in confronting the problem.
I've been called to duty to participate in such an effort, and my time here will be scarce. But if we are successful, ACORN will have a big headache come election day and in the fallout.
You can help too. Contact your local GOP offices and see what help they need. All GOP offices will need help with the GOTV (Get Out The Vote) effort. Even a few hours can make a big difference.

This credit card thing is really getting me steamed. One thought I had a few days ago (I only have one or two a week, so I must ration them...) was that all that $150 million in September was on line, meaning credit cards, and a certain percentage of that money will be contested or defaulted upon. Didn't occur to me that they would find a way to break the election laws via credit card donations, but it sure looks like they have. Also explains why they don't post all of their donors on line, whereas McCain does. Too bad the Obama campaign doesn't post them - some of the fake names that people have been using to test the system would look great on an Obama donor list!

Hey littleoldlady! Did you see this?
BBC Finds Uniontown on the freakin' map
"I'm not voting for Obama, he's black."
Charles is a registered Democrat in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
"If it wasn't for Obama I would vote Democrat. Blacks just cause trouble, that's the taste I've got in my mouth."
Race is the question mark hanging over this election.
Barack Obama is ahead in the polls. There's a widespread feeling now that the election is his to lose.
But there is something that is worrying Democrats. How accurate are the polls? How many voters are saying they will vote for Mr Obama because they do not want to be perceived as racist?
Once they enter the polling booth will it be an entirely different story?
Yep, it's those redneck, racist, rural 'merikuns again!

FTSE in freefall as figures reveal UK economy has shrunk by 0.5% - the first drop for 16 years
Britain is officially on the brink of recession after new figures revealed the economy has shrunk for the first time in 16 years.
Output dropped by 0.5 per cent between July and September in its biggest decline since the end of 1990 when the country was emerging from the last downturn.
The scale of the slowdown astonished economists who had predicted a reduction of less than half that at 0.2 per cent.
It means the UK is almost certain to be in a technical recession, classed as two quarters of negative growth, by the end of the year.
Shares plunged again after the data was released, having already shed more than five per cent in early trading amid warnings the downturn could be the worst for 50 years.
The FTSE-100 dropped to be almost nine per cent down. The pound also fell

Ok, I got the started reading the papers and came back to tell you that there is a place in Hell reserved for Kathleen Parker.
My husband called it first. Then, a brilliant 75-year-old scholar and raconteur confessed to me over wine: "I'm sexually attracted to her. I don't care that she knows nothing."
Finally, writer Robert Draper closed the file on the Sarah Palin mystery with a devastating article in this Sunday's New York Times Magazine: "The Making (and Remaking) of McCain."
McCain didn't know her. He didn't vet her. His campaign team had barely an impression. In a bar one night, Draper asked one of McCain's senior advisers: "Leaving aside her actual experience, do you know how informed Governor Palin is about the issues of the day?"
The adviser thought a moment and replied: "No, I don't know."
Blame the sycamore tree
McCain had met Palin only once -- in February, at the governors' convention in Washington -- before the day he selected her as his running mate. The second time was at his Sedona, Ariz., ranch on Aug. 28, just four days before the GOP convention.
As Draper tells it, McCain took Palin to his favorite coffee-drinking spot down by a creek and a sycamore tree. They talked for more than an hour, and, as Napoleon whispered to Josephine, "Voilà."
One does not have to be a psychoanalyst to reckon that McCain was smitten

We are practically neighbors then when you consider the whole world! You can go to the Sarah Palin site, or the Victory 2008 site for Asheville and get tickets yourself! You can print them out on the Internet. This is for this coming Sunday. Line begins at 4:00, need to be there at 6pm--Asheville Civic Center.
My daughter was able to get a couple of words with both Senator Richard Burr and Senator Lindsey Graham this past Wednesday when they were at the Victory 2008 offices. Exciting for a 16 year old! I was there as well. Both were there to support McCain/Palin. Poor Lindsey is looking tired...and he admits it as well.

Dunno, but Lynchburg TN, got its name from lynchings:
Thomas Roundtree, who lived in the log house on the lot where Dr. E. Y. Salmon now resides, was the original proprietor of the lands on which Lynchburg is located. He laid out the town about the year 1818, and, as the famous beech tree, used as a lynching post, where early offenders were punished, stood over the spring near his house, he very appropriately named the town Lynchburg.

re: #345 wahabicorridor
One does not have to be a psychoanalyst to reckon that McCain was smitten
Yup. Two years ago at a Jewish fundraiser in Anchorage, I shook hands with Sarah and we had a little chat for all of two minutes.
It wasn't sexual but I was shamelessly smitten, and my wife -- normally somewhat of the jealous type -- wasn't even jealous. She saw it too.
I'm not the least jealous of Todd Palin either. Sarah is the genuine article, kinda like a female rendition of Robert Redford back when he was in his prime. Made me want to put on some armor, pick up a suitable sword, and stand on guard by her door, wherever it takes me.
She does that to ya, and I'm convinced that's what drives Obama up the wall: Sarah Palin is a genuine, sincere, inspiring, interested, somebody-really-there person with nothing to hide, and represents almost everything Obama wants to be but can't, because his whole life seems to be based on endlessly getting away with, or hiding, something. That's what he lives and breathes.
This has nothing to do with rascism, either. It's just that Barack Obama is always wearing a phony used-car-salesman 'Oil-Can Harry' charade that literally makes my skin crawl, somewhat the opposite of a creepy Chris Mathews 'feeling up my leg'.
I'd vote for Denzel Washington to be POTUS in a heartbeat, assuming he didn''t turn out to be a socialist-liberal phony. --Or Dennis Haysbert, who played an excellent President Palmer in "24" and Jonas in "The Unit".
Did you see the movie "Shallow Hal"? That's what I'm talking about. Crack Obama's dainty outer shell, and what I see underneath really gives me the creeps! Sarah, however, is genuine what-you-see-is-what-you-get. All the difference in the world.
Which would you rather have piloting your airplane in rough weather, Barack Obama, or Sarah Palin? Barack would be lost without a teleprompter in the cockpit.
Funny how this conversation keeps lumping Obama and Palin together as opponents, almost like McCain and Biden don't exist. I've seen this phenomenon happen dozens of times, almost automatically. Strange.
A few weeks ago Todd Palin commented to an interviewer (paraphrasing), "You know, 16 years ago when Sarah said she was going to run for the local PTA, maybe I should have asked a few more questions..."

Here's some more on the coming liquidation wave today.
U.S. stock futures blasted after Asia plunge
LONDON (MarketWatch) - U.S. stock futures pointed to another monumental beating on Friday - with a leading contract falling as much as rules allow -- as a plunge in Asia reignited concerns about the health of the global economy.
S&P 500 futures dropped 60 points to 855.20 and Nasdaq 100 futures fell 82.5 points to 1,171.00. Dow industrial futures were walloped by 546 points.
The drop on the S&P 500 contract was so much that it reached pre-specified limits that can't be broken until pit trading opens. The Nasdaq and Dow contracts were trading just above their limits.

re: #402 NC State of Mind
Does any of this have to do with the public perception that Obama is going to win and the Congress may be stacked with Dems?
Oh, that is probably part of it.
It's a combination of a whole bunch of things, the silly loans that were given out, the insurance sold where the insurance company reserved only about 3 cents on the dollar of exposure, the crash of the China/India market, the run up of interest rates by the Fed several years ago that knocked all the adjustible rate mortgages out of affordability, the high oil prices, bad monetary policy by the EU catching up to them, etc.
You also have a flat out panic going on by some investors.
One of the side effects of all this will be to make retirement a lot rarer. People reaching retirement age will likely continue working longer cause they either lost a lot of their retirement income, or are supporting others in the family who are unemployed, or they are afraid to retire and drop their income in such troubled times.
That is going to cause a lot of complications in many corporations as younger workers will be looking to move up, but the older workers above them in the corporate structure hang around.

If you have a moment, can you explain why you think gold is dropping so quickly?
Sure.
1. Liquidations by large hedge funds unwinding their positions.
2. The rising value of the dollar buys more of products such as oil and gold that are denominated in dollars. A dollar buys more gold so the price per ounce drops.
The dollar is appreciating cause billions and billions of wealth are being transferred from other currencies into dollars by overseas investors. That makes the dollar worth more and other currencies worth less.
