Gov't Computers Used to Find Info on Joe the Plumber

Politics | Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 8:57:40 pm PDT

We’re living in Orwell’s nightmare.

Government computers in Ohio may have been illegally accessed to find information on Joe the Plumber.

State and local officials are investigating if state and law-enforcement computer systems were illegally accessed when they were tapped for personal information about “Joe the Plumber.”

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher became part of the national political lexicon Oct. 15 when Republican presidential candidate John McCain mentioned him frequently during his final debate with Democrat Barack Obama.

The 34-year-old from the Toledo suburb of Holland is held out by McCain as an example of an American who would be harmed by Obama’s tax proposals.

Public records requested by The Dispatch disclose that information on Wurzelbacher’s driver’s license or his sport-utility vehicle was pulled from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles database three times shortly after the debate.

Information on Wurzelbacher was accessed by accounts assigned to the office of Ohio Attorney General Nancy H. Rogers, the Cuyahoga County Child Support Enforcement Agency and the Toledo Police Department.

It has not been determined who checked on Wurzelbacher, or why. Direct access to driver’s license and vehicle registration information from BMV computers is restricted to legitimate law enforcement and government business.

Not only do I like Joe for asking the question. I like the way he has handled the loaded-gun follow up questions. When they say, "You would actually get a tax cut under Senator Obama's plan," he says "If somebody works hard to get ahead, I don't want their money."

This explodes liberal heads everywhere, because they have spent their lives amongst people who do not understand the integrity of the real people who populate "middle" America. Which is a large portion of "actual" America.

Republicans are to blame for the McCain nom since I hear that Romney was better qualified, but were afraid because he is Mormon.... so now we might have a closet muslim. Just great.

got this email and its fitting in a dark way.

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money." I laughed.

Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference -- just imagine the coincidence.

When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.

At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.

Well, according to dictionary.com

gird
1   /gɜrd/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [gurd] Show IPA Pronunciation
–verb (used with object), gird⋅ed or girt, gird⋅ing.
1. to encircle or bind with a belt or band.
2. to surround; enclose; hem in.
3. to prepare (oneself) for action: He girded himself for the trial ahead.
4. to provide, equip, or invest, as with power or strength.

I like to do the keyboard mash and pound. It makes for messy but difficult to guess passwords.

WRONG! Palin was hacked because the perp looked up her vitals on line and was able to guess in about six trys one secret question.

Making arguments like, "0bama scares me" is making an emotional argument just like the 0bamabots do in favor of him, and personally- I think our side can do better than that. The man has no qualifications, he's the most liberal Senator in Washington, his views are far from the mainstream of this country and even many in his own party. Emotional arguments do not further our cause.

How about "this man's personal history, legislative track record, and poor understanding of economics and foreign policy, make me fear for the future of my country and its citizens".

The company I work for does IT work for the state government. I've had my background checked twice, one for the agency I work for and again by the agency who owns the building the datacenter is located in.

While I won't rule out the possibility its probably someone in their IT dept that did it, as an IT professional I'm appalled by the lack of ethics. Partisanship shouldn't cloud your judgment when you're in a position of the public trust. Weather you're a civil service employee, contractor, or even a temp.

Then again, I held a security clearance in the Army and worked in a SCIF for two years. I know if I were to pull a stunt, there's the possibility of being caught and ruining my career for the rest of my life. That is if I don't go to jail over it.

If it is an IT worker, they don't represent us as a whole. There are plenty of us who understand the repercussions of disclosing information that can be damaging.

The key issue to the "Joe the Plumber" story, which the media often attempt to hide, is that Obama walked down Joe's street and up Joe's driveway where the now-famous exchange took place.

Many think this exchange took place at a "campaign rally" and Joe was a McCain "plant."

The guy was standing in his driveway, and asked a man running for national office a simple question.

How disgraceful that the "mainstream" media and the Obama campaign have attempted to smear this private citizen who asked a question to a candidate who walked up his driveway.

We are all "Joe the Plumber."

Michelle Obama, the descendant of slaves and whose family had lived through the civil rights era. Marrying her marked the end of Mr Obama's search.

At first, she has said, she was reluctant to become romantically involved. "Here we are, the only two black people here, and we are dating," she would tell Obama's biographer. "I'm thinking that looks pretty tacky."
She eventually relented and they went to a Baskin-Robbins, followed by a kiss. "It tasted of chocolate," Mr Obama - a fat-phobe who shuns ice cream - later recalled. Oh for pete sake. The polls are weighed. I put a story about polling in the spinoffs on the overnight thread. They get their sample and then tinker with the numbers. In fact- the article I linked was a Q & A where it's basically admitted they have no idea what they're doing.

258 jaunte  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 9:50:01pm

From the article:
The attorney general's office is investigating if the access of Wuzelbacher's BMV information through the office's Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway computer system was unauthorized, said spokeswoman Jennifer Brindisi.

"We're trying to pinpoint where it came from," she said. The investigation could become "criminal in nature," she said. Brindisi would not identify the account that pulled the information on Oct. 16."

How hard could it be to determine an IP address and the person who was there on that day?

I agree. It is the cool head that prevails in the thick of fight. I am fairly certain that McCain will will win probably by 4 to 8 electoral votes. We just have to keep focused on the real issues and do what we can to turn the table on the media and others who are and will continue to demoralize those who oppose Barry. My biggest fear is not some much the economic disaster that will happen but the fact this election will, no matter who wins, create even a greater division our country. We need to stop thinking about them and us and think about the US.

Pat,

I am a Jew and so is NY Grampa....we would not vote for him for a billion $$$$$$$$ tax free to each of us.

And I have friends, Jewish and non-Jewish, who are as scared of him as we are, as they read and watch non-leftie sites...hard to find, I will admit.

This Jew would spit in Obama's smirking, smug, arrogant face if given the chance.

Getting our 4 kids to wake up? We still haven't given up.

The Jews are so much in the pocket of the Demonrats from early in the last century...the current Jews do not yet recognize that the Demonrats are so different from the Party of old that their immigrant great grandparents, grandparents, parents, etc belonged to...it frightens me to think of what it would take for them to wake up. I damned well pray that voting for Hussein will not be it...they still can wake up...

My Jewish ancestors came over in the 1800s. The are much more conservative than the Jews that came from socialist Europe in the 1940's and inexplicably believe that somehow liberalism is virtuous. One would think the horrors of Stalin and Hitler would have taken care of that.

People in MO, OH and PA have to be nuts to vote for a single Democrat. In MO they had the same types threatening people these so called lawyers and law enforcement officials said if anyone put out any ads that so called "were not true" about THE ONE, then those people would be punished under the law. They were people in power either by their legal professions or by law enforcement. Some were elected. The same thing is going on in OH, and it is time for us to know just who in our communities are going to do something like this.

First Obama wants to drive a wedge between the races, and now between communities and those we believe are there to protect us. I believe there is an Alinsky rule for radicals that applies here! Something about dividing the people, and causing us to not know who we can trust.

Looks like Joe the Plumber might have just struck the mother load of all lawsuits. This is what good lawyers are supposed to do; defend us from thugs like these! I hope he finds some really good ones! Like those defending Lt. Col. Chessani!

Some have said this is like "1984" or "Animal Farm" and I agree, but this is becoming way to close to Stalin in my opinion. The actions of the Obama campaign and Obama are too real, and in our faces for it to be compared to some fictional literary work. It is too freaking real! This is no longer the "Twilight Zone", this could be our lives in less than 11 days!

One thought to consider about the polls:
There are thousands of union members. Obama wants to abolish secret ballots for union members. This is what the union bosses want.
My grandfather-in-law went against the unions in WI and never worked again. Grandma-in-law had to support the family. 5 Kids.
My friend's father went against the union in Detroit. He was murdered.
6 kids.
So if a union worker gets a call on the phone from a pollster, who do you they are going to say they are voting for? You really don't know who is at the other end of telephone line.

The AG of Ohio might not press criminal charges, but Joe can still contact a lawyer and sue. I think he should. He's high profile now- many lawyers might be willing to see what they can do for him because it would be quite a feather in their cap to have the most famous plumber in America as their client. 57% of Jews are going to vote for Obama. In fact every Jew is know is going to vote for him , with the exception of some in my immediate family. Party identity is far more important to these people than survival. Believe me. They will sacrifice Israel rather than be scorned at a cocktail party.

I get the Democrat thing, but I cannot fathom or reconcile the facts indicating Jews may not be on the most favored status of THE ONE. What part of dividing Jerusalem did they not get, or Jesse's comments, or any of the other statements made by Obama that should scare the hell out of any Jew? Khalidi? To quote a Jewish person, "OY!"

I do not care if they vote by a large margin for Obama. I will forever measure a candidate by their desires to protect Israel. As a Gentile I take very seriously the part about Jews being God's chosen people. As an American, I take very seriously their democracy and position in the Middle East and an our ally.

No.

No.
Obamas legislative records?
No.
Obama's thesis?
No.

I've always assumed it was an honor system. Like you said a lot of people are basically slapping "organic" labeling and selling the items for more.

Hope I don't seem like I'm going off on organic foods. It's just such a trend with certain people around here that if comes off as an obsession with the associated liberal rhetoric.

I have gone to seminars on organic certification many times ......IT IS MAINLY THE HONOR SYSTEM ......I don't sell that product but I go around to stores all over the country doing market research for my farms .....Organic ... unless it is from your own back yard is WAY overrated .....

Well, all I know is -every "organic" head of lettuce I ever bought was full of bugs.

Wait a friggin' minute here. Is this the same Ohio where the Secretary of State REFUSED to share information with the Board of Elections to better help the Board verify the authenticity of all those 600,000
plus ACORN registered voters (over 200,000 of which the Board was able to throw out because they were so clumsily faked)?
But they can find the time to use government computers to check out a guy who asked Obama a question which Obama, uncharacteristically enough, answered in a truthful manner?!

It does not have to be real or even important. Nor something that if a lib did would be of concern. The MSM has a conservative target technique that moves the old ladies and suppresses votes. Does anyone believe that a DWI when you are 25 would bother a Kennedy election? Yet 2M GOPers freaked out. Palin will have an old boyfriend that says she gave good head. McCain will have hit a minority paperboy who was stealing a pink flamingo. McCain will have a prescription for viagra in his wife's name. Etc.

Where is the left now crying about civil rights violations?!

I seem to recall a few years ago a woman (don't remember her name, sorry) that complained about sexual harassment from Clinton ended up with the IRS going into everything about her, did not hear anything from the MSM except FOX and that was after she wrote a book about it a few years later. I hope 'Joe' writes one, I'd even try to order it here "down under". One thing that did come up was exactly what you asked, where were the civil rights people from the left then, same place they are now, reporting for and from the left.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. The media isn't interested in informing, but rather desire to be kingmaker for a few years. It's like a game. Olbermann and Matthews and Maddow and Paul Krugman and all the other nuts in the Loony Left Media insist on Obama, and if you don't agree then your ass is grass. Take Doug Feith. He wrote the only actual insider Washington memoir about the reasoning surrounding the war on terror and he backed it up with actual textual evidence, including declassified documents. And it defended the conduct of the Bush Administration. And the New York Times didn't even review it.

When the lefties are living in denial, you know that they know that they are wrong. But it seems to only get them MORE riled up, and they wail about hope and change and 'spreading the wealth'.

Goddamn. It's serious to everyone but the media and the lefties. They just want their turn driving the car, their turn piloting the ship. And I'm pretty darn sure they plan to drive it off the road or onto the rocks.

As a former government worker I came across a lot of sensitive information in my job. Part of the job is integrity. I, like the rest of the taxpayers don't want the government delving into my personal life unless there is a criminal warrant out for me and I am dangerous.

The people that looked at Joe's records are lacking the qualities a person wants in a government employee. Sadly, sometimes it is the long time manager that feels the need for greed.

What is effective here is to write/email the organizational leader and the people and ask about ethics violations. As long as it's not the leader that is in question, you can usually start a process that clarifies the issue. You also need to ask for a response back. In a political year for a political issue there are lots of low hang fruit. Ask if these are people associated with ACORN.

I pray to God daily, indeed, hourly....to heal this country. Whether it be the press that so eagerly brought down Nixon (the same press that ignores Obama's relationships with, well, everybody, yet feels so inclined to puruse Sarah Palin's, or Joe Wurlzelbacher's life story down to the penny, date, offense, and speeding ticket as if each was a national disaster.

I have sworn to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, against ALL enemies, Foreign AND domestic.

How many others have sworn the same allegiance? To sit and contemplate the possibility of Congress "unilaterally" poking into 401Ks and Roth IRAs is unconscionable. To think that we put money into those vehicles strictly for us, after having worked so hard to earn that money, and to dedicate it to our own personal use...and then to wake up and "allow" San Fran Nan to stick her syrup-covered fingers in it is beyond the pale.

Help me Lizards....while I have not lost faith, I have resigned to the fact that for the next 4 years self-sacrifice and self-determination wouldn't mean anything.

Tell that to Jefferson, Washington, Adams, Lafayette. Ask, no, BEG Pelosi, Reid, et al, to re-afffirm their allegiance to a document that is now become so muddled that the bulk of Washington D.C. has forgotten, or worse, erased what it's memory meant.

I've punched in links to other sites, but that doesn't appear to be what is in view. What are we talking about here?

And remember! Don't jay-walk in downtown Walnut Creek. You'll get a ticket.

Anyone who is interested in homeschooling (at the very least) needs to pay close attention to this tendency.

I get the feeling that Joe has some money and was looking to get involved in a business in which he could invest/buy. Not enough has been explained about this, but he had to have some source of income to pay the legal fees to get custody of his son.

Perhaps family money . . .

I find that doubtful.

I think you need it for commercial work, but not residential, and it varies from county to county or within certain city limits - something like that. There may also be some requirements that are impacted by apprentice programs.

Whatever it is, I don't think he was under the impression he was doing anything illegal - and what I've asked people is, why didn't Joe's employer insist he have a license, if one was needed for the kind of work he was doing?

re: #366 ggt

Your gramps were called Nana? (oh, probably Nan --the "a" being the feminine version)

;0

My Granddads died before I was born. But my 2 Grandmothers were Bubbe and Grammy...my Mum zt"l was 'Nana', so my kids use 'Nana' for me.

The funniest was when my now 2-year old grandson kept saying 'Nana, nana, nana'...when he was too young to know that was me..daughter called me, laughing, and then she asked him to show her 'nana"...he pulled her by the finger into the kitchen, and pointed at the bananas on the wooden banana tree on the counter. ;)

She reported back. Talk about a deflated ego! But I still laugh.

IIRC there is no "federal" standard for "organic", "natural", and most of the other labels. There is one, but I can't remember what it is --perhaps "pesticide free" or "no msg" or something.

It's all a marketing tool used to cater to those who think it matters. All molecules are god-made --we just rearrange them.

Actually there is a standard .....but it is a certification process .... you are inspected by USDA certified independent inspectors ...but I know people who are certified organic and the inspectors do come and inspect but it does not happen often and it is not random .......there are certifying agencies throughout the country .....it would not be in the best interest of the inspecting agencies if they failed too many people ...... I am not saying that there are not people out there that try to do the right thing ..... I am just saying it is mainly an honor system .....if you are certified organic you can use the words "certified Organic" ...... if not you are not supposed to use the word organic ..... but many do .....the term "natural" ...... can be plastered on anything and often is ......mostly at a much higher price ........

I looked it up. In order to be licensed in Ohio, you have to have five years as an apprentice working under a licensed plumber. Joe will reach his 5 years in November, if he ever gets a chance to work again.

re: #382 TheMatrix31

He has no license, so they jumped on it..turns out that he is, indeed, a plumber, but Ohio requires the owner of the company to have a license and that covers his employees.

They are desperate to destroy anyone who can pull the rug out from under The One...

Just a question-

If Joe the plumber was a licensed plumber, as if it matters if he is or isn't, would being licensed include being required part of a union? I can understand not wanting to be part of a union. Anyone?
