Breaking: US Attacks Syria in Cross-Border Raid

World | Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 2:38:22 pm PDT

The US military is fed up with Syria’s open support of Iraqi jihadis, and today they sent helicopters into Syrian territory in a strike targeting a family that has been helping the jihadis get across the border: Syria: US choppers attack village near Iraq border.

DAMASCUS, Syria – U.S. military helicopters attacked territory inside Syria close to its border with Iraq Sunday, killing eight people in a strike the Syrian government condemned as “serious aggression.”

A U.S. military official said the raid by special forces targeted the foreign fighter network that travels through Syria into Iraq in an area where the Americans have been unable to shut it down because it was out of the military’s reach.

“We are taking matters into our own hands,” the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of cross-border raids.

The attack came just days after the commander of U.S. forces in western Iraq said American troops were redoubling efforts to secure the Syrian border, which he called an “uncontrolled” gateway for fighters entering Iraq.

UPDATE at 10/26/08 4:54:28 pm:

Like it's not "serious aggression" on the part of Syrians to be meddling in Iraqi affairs.

Hey, syria. If Iraq wants your help, they'll ask for it. Until then, fuck off.

Damn skippy. Same with the weak ass ROE that were in place before.

I think in WW2 we had more of an attitude where we would use the level of violence required to ensure the best possible victory, then back off if that proved too much (Dresden).

Nowadays, we seem to use the level of violence required to meet some weird-ass definition of "good guy", then, if we still have the wherewithal, ratchet it up until we can win. I am def in favor of the former over the latter method and I pray for those who serve while the geeks in DC and Command dink around playing footsie with the media and the UN.

Anyone who serves - I am curious - what have we gained by treating irregular militia with Geneva convention delicacy? I am not being sarcastic - I really want to know if there is a concrete benefit on the ground in Iraq or Afghanistan and does that benefit outweigh being able to treat al-Q, et al. more harsly?

'Former' Obama Advisor Meets with Syrians

The International Crisis Group (ICG) is a George Soros controlled "think-tank" that gave him a Founders Award. He is on the board as are Samantha Power and Zbigniew Brzezinski. We have wrtten about these two figures in the past at American Thinker. Power has said on separate occasions that she will serve in an Obama Administration. There is a host of bad "apples" that are connected to the ICG.

When the ICG gave Soros an award he praised them for their work on the "Palestinian question"-as he should since their Middle East section of analysts is chock full of anti-Israel 'experts'. I have written about the ICG numerous times and the future role it might play as a proto-State Department.

Now another figure that has been written about at American Thinker is in the news again: Robert Malley, former (and future?) adviser to Barack Obama and a man who serves as a key foreign policy expert at the ICG.

He recently met with Syrian leader Basher Assad and explained the role the ICG would have in briefing the new US Administration (and I doubt he meant McCain) about Syria's important role in the region.

Iranian official calls for attack on UK

Fearing a US strike on Iran during President George W. Bush's last months in office, a senior Iranian official has suggested the Islamic regime should target London to deter such an attack.

In an article on the Iranian Web site Aftab last week - translated by the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute - the head of the Europe and US Department in the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Wahid Karimi, said that an attack on London would deter the US from attacking Teheran.

"The most appropriate means of deterrence that Iran has, in addition to a retaliatory operation in the [Gulf] region, is to take action against London," Karimi said.

+1 AW! Shots coming from a neighborhood? Level the neighborhood. Before long, those wishing to live will be happy to point to those who don't.

If we have to go to war—and it is always my hope we don't—I think the sky should grow dark from the bombers above and the billowing smoke beneath. We limit our limited warfare too much. Our enemies should be begging for peace on our terms, not badmouthing us at the UN. Sure we should limit civilian casualties when possible—but then again don't mix military and civilians together. Shots coming from an area where no one is wearing military uniforms or insignia? Assume they are all combatants until they prove otherwise. These cheap tricks only work because we allow them to work. In the long run less civilians will be killed if we don't play these games.

This was done on 'actionable intel' ... one might suspect SOF was watching the place with pictures; video; interviews and hummit ID's of indigenous persons. COLT folks may have lased the place.

Assad should have watched "Men in Black" and heard Agent K say "don't start none, won't be none. Too late now, terrorists. Get it 'til they quit it.

Of course, THE BBC DID

Well, if Syrian officials say, then okay.

Roggio:

If the raid occurred, the US military must have detected a senior member of al Qaeda in Iraq in the region. Abu Ayyub al Masri, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, is reported to have left the country earlier this year after the terror group lost its sanctuaries in Diyala province.

The US military may be closing in on al Qaeda’s senior leadership. US forces killed Abu Qaswarah, al Qaeda in Iraq's second in command, during a raid in Mosul in northern Iraq on Oct. 15. The military has also killed and captured numerous al Qaeda leader and couriers over the past several weeks. The information obtained during these raids help to paint a picture of al Qaeda’s command structure inside of of Iraq as well as in neighboring countries.

This is the change we need!

Killing terrorists without apology or regard for borders

124 SixDegrees  Sun, Oct 26, 2008 3:37:47pm

According to a report on NPR, it's the Syrians who are claiming their territory was violated; the US is denying it, and claims that an attack took place on the Iraqi side of the border.

This doesn't reconcile with the "anonymous source" in the article cited here, but it seems a great deal more plausible.

If this escalates any further, Obama and the media will accuse Bush of trying to create a rally around the flag effect to boost McCain.

I have little doubt that they will do that no matter how things pan out.

Obama: I have sent a delegation from my Department of Peace to bring this situation to a peaceful conclusion.

[Four days later]

Obama: I am sending another delegation to Syria to peacefully retrieve the bodies of our first delegation...

[5 days later]

Obama: The situation has grown worse. I have just received a disturbing video of what was left of our delegations from the Department of Peace.

As a lawyer, I am going to subpoena them to testify before the International Court and get to the bottom of this.

My dear grandmother will be delivering the subpoena with 20 million dollars to cover their costs of transportation.

[Six days later]

Obama: I have bad news. Granny has been abducted and they are asking 40 million in ransom.

I think she is worth more.

I will be sending Barney Frank with 800 million – I have asked George Soros pull the cash from the US treasury. He is a man you can trust. That ought to do it.

[Seven days later]

Obama: I have not heard a thing from Barney Frank. But, I have learned that the Treasury is empty, all of the gold in Fort Knox is gone and Soros will not answer his phone.

If we get to the “root cause” of the problem the Department of Peace will solve everything. I have asked my good friend Ali Abunimah to handle the negations.

[Three days later]

Obama: We have found the root cause. They just want 50 nukes and missiles.

I have Directed Jimmy Carter give them what they want and hold a candle light vigil until Granny is back.

[Six days later]

Obama: I am addressing you Greenbrier's Broadcasting Studios in the Mount Weather Nuclear Bunker. I am fine. But, New York and Washington are smoking craters.

Joe Biden was right about this testing thing. Unfortunately, he was last in line for the Bunker and was vaporized. He was just like Joe The Plumber. I really did not like him in the first place.

As Commander-in-chief, I can assure you that we are working on a peaceful solution. My 300 advisers are here and so is my brightest adviser David Axelrod.

In the mean time, keep your television tuned to this channel, or if you don’t have a working TV or have no electricity, and you suspect another nuclear attack get in a fetal position under your desk – or at least grab your ankles and hope for the best.

Looks like we may have got a head of the snake.

US special operations hunter-killer teams entered Syria in an attempt to capture Abu Ghadiya, a senior al Qaeda leader who has been in charge of the Syrian network since 2005. US intelligence analysts identified Ghadiya as the leader of the Syrian network, The Washington Post reported in July. Ghadiya was identified as a “major target” by the US military in February 2008.

I agree. The rules of engagement our military have had to live with (or die from) have infuriated me from day one. The idea we should sacrifice military lives to protect "innocent" civilians is a recipe for defeat. Civilians, who in many cases, aid and abet their terrorist brethren - not to mention terrorists who fire from behind women and children, use mosques for munitions storage and ambushes, and stage the assassination of their fellow Muslims for propaganda purposes and photo ops on the 6 o'clock news.

I wonder what Patton would have said if some mealy-mouthed politician in Washington said there was no military solution.
