 RetweetRIP, Dean Barnett

Blogosphere | Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 1:27:06 pm PDT

Oh no.

Dean Barnett, 1967-2008.

I’ve linked to Dean’s work often here, and spoken to him several times. The last time we talked, he invited me to contribute to the Weekly Standard. He was one of the nicest, most genuine guys I’ve ever met, and an excellent writer. I’m stunned by this news.

Sorry to see you go so soon, Dean. You’ll be missed.

RIP, Dean, may your words forever be an inspiration to us all. My deepest sympathies to your family.

What a pity... he was a very good writer. What did he die of, so young?

7 Dream  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:33:57pm

Sadness. I always liked him on Hewitts show. He will be missed greatly. My condolences to his wife and kids.

8 joncelli  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:34:35pm

He was a good man. May he rest in peace.

re: #6 medaura18586

What a pity... he was a very good writer. What did he die of, so young?

He had cystic fibrosis, and occasionally had a crisis like this, but this time it got him.

10 winston06  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:36:05pm

OH NOOO... I got chills here. I am so sorry to hear it. What a sad day

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Barnett family and his friends. RIP.

12 Ozark Mountain Daredevil  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:37:15pm

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name' sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

Rest In Peace, Dean...

13 cblesz  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:37:38pm

Horrible. Way too young. God bless Dean and his family.

14 marge45b  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:37:56pm

Chowda! I'll miss you filling in for Hugh. Rest in Peace.

15 rawmuse  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:40:16pm

RIP DEAN, We will see you on the other side.

16 StinkHammer  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:40:20pm

Gonna try to catch Hugh Hewitt's show to hear his comments. He and Barnett were close, Dean having sat in for Hewitt on his radio show many times.

I didn't realize he was so young.

His life was gentle; and the elements
So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up,
And say to all the world, THIS WAS A MAN!

Sorry to see you leave us Dean. Give our love to Tony S. & Tim R. on the other side. Till we get there.

20 Thanos  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:42:15pm

Rest in Peace, Dean will be missed.

21 StinkHammer  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:43:36pm

Tony Snow, Dean Barnett -- too many good 'uns are leaving us too soon.

22 wolfie  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:43:51pm

He fought so hard to make it through this. I'm so very sorry.

23 Suzette  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:44:29pm

May perpetual Light shine upon you Dean.
Rest In Peace...and many condolences to his family.

24 redheadredstate  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:44:55pm

I was afraid of this. Hugh Hewitt had kept his listeners apprised of Dean's condition and over the last week it wasn't looking good. I enjoyed both his commentary and his accent. God Bless his family. He will be missed

25 John  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:45:10pm

What little I knew of Dean was from his stints filling in for Hugh Hewitt, but I shall never forget him. I especially enjoyed listening to his Boston accent which was all the more delightful because he spoke common sense conservatism, so unusual for someone from Taxachusetts. We will all miss him.

26 Shug  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:47:13pm

27 doppelganglander  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:49:48pm

How terribly sad. His family is in my thoughts.

28 MrSilverDragon  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:51:00pm

Rest in peace, Dean.

29 wolfie  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:51:23pm

re: #25 John

Yeah. That accent always cracked me up! And the wry jokes he'd make about Hewitt.
But as you said, it was the common sense so well defended and expressed that was his hallmark.

30 ArtistaSLO  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:52:50pm

Godspeed Chowda, You will be missed. To the whole Barnett Family, Thank you for sharing Dean with us. We all will miss him - you are in our prayers.

31 Russkilitlover  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:53:03pm

RIP Dean Barnett.

32 StinkHammer  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:53:27pm

re: #29 wolfie

Yeah. That accent always cracked me up! And the wry jokes he'd make about Hewitt.

Not to mention his own self-deprecating references to his "goofy accent."

33 mean Gene  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:55:35pm

How terribly sad.
My prayers for his family and friends.
Is there a particularly good CF charity to donate to?

34 FrogMarch  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:59:25pm

I always enjoyed it when Dean sat in for Hugh on his show. He was wonderful! May God bless him and his family. He will be missed.

35 jorline  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 1:59:43pm

RIP and prayers for the family.

36 Ringo the Gringo  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:02:25pm

When listening to Barnett on the radio, I would find myself trying to imitate his accent.

The way he would say "dot com", for example, could be painful to attempt. The way he would say it you would think it was spelled dwot quam.

Somehow he made talking that way seem effortless... which I suppose it was, for him.

I'll miss the guy.

37 newsjunkie_ky  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:02:34pm

Those neonazi's that were busted for plotting to kill obama should NEVER see the light of day again.
I hope the Feds get them all.

It's always tough to lose one of the good guys. ;-(

40 sandspur  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:05:01pm

A voice for good we could ill afford to lose.
My condolences to his family and friends, he will be very much missed.

41 thebronze  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:06:44pm

I'm so VERY sad to hear about Dean passing away. I was praying that he'd make it.

I loved hearing him sub for Hugh Hewitt and I'm very sad that I'll never hear him again.

God bless you, Dean. RIP...

42 loppyd  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:06:57pm

Very very sad.

43 mac6443  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:09:52pm

Some how I hope you will be able to get this up front.

My son is 14 and a freshman at the local high school. He fights an uphill battle every day because of his conservative views. Being called racist and uninformed scandal monger etc.

He weathers all this with a great sense of humor and listen to everyone's opinion. The problem he faces, like most of us, is his opposition will not. He has caused some of his class mates to start thinking on their own and that is a good thing. That is all he is asking. He digs for facts, he does not blog rumors and he has a quick wit.

He made a poster for school and will put it on his locker. Hoping it will not be taken down. He does have it taken down he intends to have all political posters in the school removed. Obama and McCain and Nader.

He has guts and we are proud of him for sticking to his guns.

I wish I knew how to send a copy of his poster. I think you would get a kick out og it.

Not here. Wrong thread guy.

45 Catttt  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:12:12pm

So very sorry to hear of Mr. Barnett's passing. My condolences to his family and friends - we will miss him in the blogosphere, to be sure.

46 dhg4  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:17:04pm

Does anyone remember his original nom-de-blog?

James Frederick Dwight.

47 freeus  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:18:53pm

I am so sorry to hear this. We download Hugh's show and listen to it on our ipods, and that is how we first learned of Dean. Via others comments about him, outside of him being on Hugh's show and writing, we have heard Dean was an awesome individual. May God Bless his family and protect and comfort his wife and children.

48 Olderthandirt  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:23:38pm

RIP Dean Barnett! Dean talked several times on the Townhall blog about his cystic fibrosis, saying in effect that he's outliving the expected life span of someone with that disease. Well, somehow the odds caught up with him and that shouldn't have happened.

Dean Barnett was a good man, a solid conservative, and a brilliant writer; sharp as a tack too. RIP!

49 readytofight  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:36:42pm

Godspeed, Dean

I remember him from his Soxblog days, where I was a very occasional commenter. He posted as James Frederick Dwight, in honor of three of the Red Sox greatest players.

I can't believe he's gone. I really thought he'd pull through. Prayers for his family and friends.

Life really sucks sometimes.

52 poopeedoo  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 2:41:13pm

Our prayers go out to Dean Barnett's family. May the Lord provide them with comfort and peace at this difficult time.

Rest in peace Dean. My prayers are with your family - what a gracious writer you were and so solid in your beliefs.

Aw man... what terrible news. Dean Barnett was a great man, imo. I never met him and only know him from his time filling in for Hugh Hewitt but his character came through my radio loud and clear. I prayed for him to recover. He fought as hard as he could through remarkably difficult adversity. God, please take care of this fine man. He did his best to make the world a better place for his survivors. Please take care of his family and friends as they cope with such a painful loss. RIP Dean Barnett. You will be missed.

57 OldDog  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 3:04:12pm

Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince;
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Horatio, grieving over the body of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.

Our side lost another moral, and intellectual soul.

I will keep your family in my prayers.

Go rest.

60 Kresh  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 3:43:13pm

Damn. This is terrible. A great man is gone and he will be missed.

R.I.P. Dean Barnett.

61 darkpixel  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 3:55:57pm

I've read Dean's stuff since the soxblog days.

I'm so glad I got to read his stuff.

Good bye, sir.

Rest in Peace Mr Barnett, You will be sorely missed.

64 protestshooter  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 4:27:57pm

What a shame - he was by all accounts a really good man.

65 KB55  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 4:31:25pm

Dean was the most articulate, even without his "r"s, conservative Massfellow (there's another term but does not apply to this man), an incongruity to say the least. Long will his memory remain as a brave, courageous and intelligent man.

Rest in blessed peace, Dean.

Kneemail on the way to his family and friends.

66 kostya lotz  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 4:37:53pm

So long Chowda! Good winds and smooth sailing, friend.
Thanks for the funny accent.

People in MA don't have an accent, we started the whole damn country, so if you don't talk like us, YOU have an accent. RIP Dean.

68 Hawaiian cocoNUT  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 5:14:28pm

If you want to know the definition of the word mentch then think Dean Barnett.
I will sorely miss your laugh s on Hugh Hewitt show!
Rest in peace Dean...

69 Joshua Godinez  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 5:32:09pm

It's weird how I felt affected by this and Russert. Neither of them are anyone I really knew although I heard Barnett often on Hewitt's show. I guess as a husband and father I'm getting more sentimental. I didn't really like Dean's style at first, but his good humor and camaraderie with the whole show finally won me over. I am saddened by his passing.

70 Blackacre  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 5:41:27pm

May his memory be a blessing and bring comfort to his family and friends. He will be missed.

71 pablito  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 5:54:36pm

What a shocking heartbreak.

He was so optimistic and vigorous just a few weeks ago.

Absolutely devastating.

RIP Dean. You were an inspiration. I also have CF, so I can tell you that 37 is about the average lifespan, sadly.

hate to see him go, but he left a lasting impression and will be remebered
