Roggio: Syrian Strike Aimed at Al Qaeda Coordinator

World | Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 3:27:40 pm PDT

Bill Roggio has the story behind yesterday’s US attack on Syria: Syrian strike aimed at al Qaeda’s coordinator in Syria.

The US military incursion into Syria was aimed at the senior leader of al Qaeda’s extensive network that funnels foreign fighters, weapons, and cash from Syria into Iraq, a senior intelligence official told The Long War Journal.

US special operations hunter-killer teams entered Syria in an attempt to capture Abu Ghadiya, a senior al Qaeda leader who has been in charge of the Syrian network since 2005. US intelligence analysts identified Ghadiya as the leader of the Syrian network, The Washington Post reported in July. Ghadiya was identified as a “major target” by the US military in February 2008.

The raid to capture Ghadiya occurred in the town of Sukkariya near Abu Kamal in eastern Syria, just five miles from the Iraqi border. Four US helicopters crossed the border and two of the helicopters landed to drop off special operations forces, who then proceeded to clear structures.

Nine people were reported killed and 14 were wounded. Syrian officials claimed innocent construction workers and women and children were killed in the raid.

US officials contacted by The Long War Journal would not comment if Ghadiya was killed or captured during the raid.

If the SOF guys have Ghadiya, I'm betting he's rather thirsty from his trip. They had better get a bunch of water in him quick. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Fox News .com has this:

U.S. Official: Al Qaeda Coordinator Captured in Syria Raid

A U.S. strike on a network of foreign fighters in Syria led to the capture of an Al Qaeda coordinator who was wanted for sending operatives, weapons and cash into Iraq, a U.S. official told FOX News.

Abu Ghadiyain, Al Qaeda's senior coordinator operating in Syria, was captured after Sunday's attack in Sukkariyeh, which left eight dead about 4-5 miles away from Syria's border with Iraq, the official said. Ghadiyain was believed to be associated with the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Other documents found in Muthanna's possession included a "pledge of a martyr," which is signed by foreign fighters inside Syria, and an expense report. The pledge said the suicide bomber must provide a photograph and surrender their passport. It also stated the recruit must enroll in a "security course" in Syria. The expense report was tallied in US dollars, Syrian lira, and Iraqi dinars, and included items such as clothing, food, fuel, mobile phone cards, weapons, salaries, "sheep purchased," furniture, spare parts for vehicles, and other items.

Ouch. Major tube failure.

It looked like a 60mm French Brandt. Since they stopped making those about 20 years ago, there could be serious metal fatigue in the tube just due to age.

cheers

re: #97 buzzsawmonkey

I would think that with bureaucratized regimentation, they'd know the drill.

One of the other reasons British teeth are bad is that the British eat an astounding amount of sweets. This is a holdover from when the British West Indian colonies produced vast amounts of sugar on plantations (with both white and black slaves). Much of it was made into rum, but much of it was also imported to Britain as cheap energy food for an undernourished population that lived, for the most part, in ill-heated houses in a cold climate.

Though they no longer hold the West Indies, the British have never really improved their heating, and have never kicked the sugar habit.

I don't know if that pun was intentional, but I like it!
;-P

Stevens has been convicted on seven counts.

Which brings up an interesting point: in many states, convicted felons can't vote, but convicted felons CAN serve in Congress.

It's not "the" Mullah Omar, it was Maulvi Umer aka Maulvi Omar, Aka Mullah Omar depending on what part of Pakistan you are in, he was the spokesworm for Baitullah Mehsud, Pakistani, not the one-eyed Mullah Omar you are thinking of.

Good night spokesworm Mullah Omar-Bob. Maulvi- Umar-Bob. Good night One eyed Mullah Omar-Bob. Good night Baitullah Mehsud-bob. Good night.

That was sure some graphic dust. I was disappointed. By it was funny. These guys are SO worked up over this religious poop that they will simply stand there, with out any training (that's not how you treat a mortar) and play with this stuff like it was candy.

Actually if he is reelected, does he derive any immunity from being s serving member of the Senate?

If you are SO sure, email Charles, ask him. I have seen Charles ban people for remarks like yours. You had no sarcasm tag to start with, and Charles has warned us not to even joke about having someone killed.

Take it up with him.

I don't think this applies to leaders of terrorist sympathizing nations who are not American citizens. I doubt Charles is going to get a visit from the FBI over someone wishing US Spec Ops or the Mossad send the chinless opthalmologist to the great eye chart in the sky.

In "Our Culture:What's Left of It" Theodore Dalyrmple has a fascinating essay on the diet of British underclass, who are grateful for prison because they get some semblance of nutrition.

O.T. I just saw the sweetest report on Fox. A little mixed breed dog, saved by the fire department after he wouldn't leave a burning house. He was protecting 4 tiny little kittens. They had to give him oxygen and massage his heart. But he's okay and the kittens are too. At the end of the report they showed him licking one of the kittens. And it appears everybody is going to live happily ever after.

It is impossible to tell without proper full-spectrum audio of the brrruuup whether it was a mini gun (7.62 mm), a Vulcan (20 mm Gatling) or an A-10 with a 30 mm Gatling. It's all in the bass. A 30 mm from an A-10 has some serious bass that soothes my heart (of course, I am a serious tuba player).

I'm a bit suspicious of the video.
Hard to tell but I didn't get the impression of Blackhawks or Kiowas.
Unless that was a really good cellphone video, what are the odds someone was there with a video camera -- who wasn't hiding when the shooting started?

Anyway -- how likely would such an SOF attack be in the daytime?

Seems fishy to me.
