LA Times Responds to Readers: Get Lost

Politics | Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 4:41:24 pm PDT

This is how the Los Angeles Times has chosen to respond to requests to release the Obama-Rashid Khalidi videotape, courtesy of an LGF reader.

To paraphrase: “No, we’re not going to release the video. Go away.”

From: Readers Rep
Date: Monday, October 27, 2008 16:14
Subject: RE: Not read: The L.A. Times Suppressing Obama’s Khalidi Bash Tape?
To:

[...]

The Times did write about the tape, so I’m not sure what you mean aboutsuppressing the video or information from the video. Here is a copy of the report about the video.

Thanks again for writing,
Jamie Gold
Readers’ Representative

...

If that is the case, then release the video that you have of the event and don’t merely report it. Why is the Los Angeles Times sitting on a videotape of the 2003 farewell bash in Chicago at which Barack Obama lavished praise on the guest of honor, Rashid Khalidi - former mouthpiece for master terrorist Yasser Arafat?

...

Thanks for your note back.  It sounds as if you don’t find “mere reporting” to be enough, but The Times is not suppressing anything.

Just the opposite — the L.A. Times brought the matter to light.

Thanks again for taking the time to write.

Jamie Gold
Readers’ Representative

A perfect example of the utter arrogance of the media, and the contempt in which they hold their readers. They’re very aware that video has an immediacy and power that mere words do not; that’s why they’re suppressing it.

And it’s hard to avoid the suspicion that there’s more to that video than they reported.

Wait? We don't need to print? The only subscribers are LA Times employees - all 3 of us and we already know what we are going to say? When? Why?

2 Iron Fist  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 4:43:14pm

And then they wonder why they are losing readership. Gee, I can't figure that one out.

No, no, no! The LA Times responded to the letter writers!

You see, the difference between readers and letter-writers is that the LA Times actually has letter writers.

1) No- merely reporting is not enough.
2) You barely even do "mere reporting" as it is.

10 Ozark Mountain Daredevil  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 4:44:37pm

It's the mindset. They are so closed off from mainstream American, so sheltered in their echo-chambers, that they honestly don't see what the problem is.

I think it's a little like what we see in the middle east. They see their countries are not advancing so they think more islam is the answer, not less or reform.

Same thing here- they see republicans are still around and not the people they think should be in power, so instead of being fair and equal in their treatment, they become more biased thinking that is the solution.

51 Jimash  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 4:55:56pm

May I suggest a different tack ?
First, call their entire reporting into question.
Insist that they are SMEARING Obama and probably don't have any tape at all.
Accuse them of lying.
If they still don't release it, accuse them of lying again, and insist that in the spirit of journalistic ethics and fairness that they at least point to the source that gave them the tape so that said source can be asked for further copies.

52 jaunte  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 4:56:26pm

According to this the financial picture is not too bright at the LA Times, or the rest of the Tribune Co.

Tribune Reports 2008 Second Quarter Results

CHICAGO, August 13, 2008 -- Tribune Company today reported a second quarter 2008 loss from continuing operations of $3.8 billion compared with income from continuing operations of $35 million in the second quarter of 2007. The 2008 loss from continuing operations was due to after-tax non-cash charges of $3.8 billion to write down the Company’s publishing goodwill and newspaper masthead intangible assets, nearly all of which resulted from the Company’s Times Mirror acquisition in 2000.

[Link: www.tribune.com...]

Think of the additional readership if they broke a big story. Hmm.
Otherwise, it looks like a big short-selling opportunity.

Contrast this cowardly behaviour with the story of Marcus Luttrell and Seal Team 10. (read the book Lone Survivor) It was four against almost 200 Taliban. They took about 125 Taliban with them. Effing FOUR of them. pfffft!

You are racist if you do not vote for Obama. If we don't like your questions, we will cut you off from any communications with us. The MSM is working with Obama to supress information. Children are being taught to question their parents. Videos of young men in military gear, stomping to a chant about Obama. Children singing praises to Obama. Character assasination of Palin and her family. Common plumbers asks the wrong question, his personal life bared all over the world. Campaign posters in the style of communist revolutionary art. Remarks from religious leaders of Obama's almost christ-like persona. Endorsements from major terrorist and terrorist groups.

"The linking together of opposites… knowledge with ignorance, cynicism with fanaticism, this is the mark of the power of the Party. The Party’s ideology abounds with contradictions even when there is no practical reason for them. We must denounce the war with Eurasia; we must return to the people freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and freedom of thought…"

By this new standard of treatment of newsworthy video tape, here is what the LA Times reporting on the Rodney King beating should have read:

In a videotape provided to the Los Angeles Times, a black motorist is apprehended by police after a high speed chase. While some may characterize the apprehension as "a beating" others may not feel that way. We have therefore decided to not provide the video for any public scrutiny.

In other news, a gold fish was found floating upside down in a Chatsworth home after it had been overfed by an over zealous 5 year old.

Leftists work very hard at forgetting, and especially at getting everyone else to forget, that 1984 was a warning against the evils of Socialism.

The Party, after all, is named Ingsoc; "English Socialism."

Yes, and Eric Blair was an English Socialist. He wasn't bothered so much by socialism, but he was bothered with socialism that became totalitarianism. That was the message of 1984.

DESPITE being shot twice during an ambush in Afghanistan, an SAS soldier lashed himself to the front of his patrol vehicle so he wouldn't be left behind if he passed out from loss of blood and kept on fighting.

The Digger is expected to be recommended for a high level bravery award.

Suffering from serious upper body wounds, the soldier struggled on to the front of his SAS long range patrol vehicle (LRPV) and, under heavy fire, used a rope to attach himself firmly between the vehicle's bull bar and radiator.

Once he was secured, and there was no chance that he would fall off if he fainted, he picked up his rifle and resumed firing at the enemy during a two-hour fighting withdrawal.

Well, why not just run with the article? Except for any proof that Ayers and Dohrn were even in attendance, it's pretty much all there.

A special tribute came from Khalidi's friend and frequent dinner companion, the young state Sen. Barack Obama. Speaking to the crowd, Obama reminisced about meals prepared by Khalidi's wife, Mona, and conversations that had challenged his thinking.

His many talks with the Khalidis, Obama said, had been "consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases. . . . It's for that reason that I'm hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation -- a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid's dinner table," but around "this entire world."

I'm so pissed I am going to cancel if they don't post before the election and Obama wins.

172 astronmr20  Mon, Oct 27, 2008 8:36:03pm

I do think, even though it should have happened before he was even nominated, that the wobbly wheels of the Obama bus are beginning to show serious wear, and are in danger of coming off.

Make no mistake.. they only have to hold it together for 8 more days (assuming they have a chance of winning), so they will do absolutely anything, say absolutely anything.. in this brief interim before the general election next Tuesday. Even more so than before. I believe it will be evident in Obama's paid address to the nation as the presumptive winner.

This is the same strategy that the media is using on his behalf. They have been found out by the general public, but are so close to their "O-gasm" next week, that even a few thousand web readers or Fox viewers could make them release a tape, or do anything at all to puncture the tires.

They want him in office so bad they can taste it, and if this video will do O any harm, you'll have to pry it from their cold dead fingers (or recover it from a deleted hard drive).

Money talks. Offer to subscribe to the Times. That's what I'm going to do now. If they release the tape...I'll subscribe.

re: #161 Not amazed in NJ

I agree that it is not the best avenue - the whole redistribution thing is the best thing we have right now. However, I think it is worth something to see Obama and Ayers together at yet again something else. Big bonus if they were sitting next to each other.

I wouldn't bank on the hope that the video shows Obama and Ayers together -- for one thing, it appears to be purely speculative that Ayers was even at the event, based on the fact that he was known to be friendly with Khalidi.

I also wouldn't assume that the video contains anything much more incriminating than what was described in the story -- because the few details that WERE reported are bad enough in themselves to scare away all those coveted Jewish voters in Florida, and thus reason enough for the LA Times to sit on the tape.

If Obama wins this election it will be 100% due to the collusion of the news media which has completely thrown off the laurel of journalistic ethics and responsibilities in order to become propagandists.

I firmly believe that, if Obama wins, all conservatives and fair-minded independents and democrats who understand how badly this undermines democracy should refuse to view any left-wing news channels or websites, purchase any leftist-run magazines or newspapers, or see any movies or TV shows starring pretentious "actor-activists." During the past few months I've permanently abandoned cnn.com, chicagotribune.com and, by extension, any of their advertisers. I will never again give them so much as a click's worth of revenue.

If this is the death toll of an informed voting population, let it also be the swan song for the activist news media. Let them go bankrupt.

I called them today-the phone clerk at the "newsdesk" was clueless about this. She chuckled actually that I read it on LGF. I then Emailed Jamie.gold@latimes.com. No reply of course.

mmmm Lobster, I love Lobster. LA Times, please eat this Lobster and report to me how it tastes.

Check out this 1922 news item that was in the New York Times about Benuto Mussolini and how he took over the media in Italy. The story is beginning to have an air of familiarity about it. I was never aware of Mussolini's career in "journalism", but he did manage to stiffle the Italian press. History has a nasty habit of repeating itself.

folks,,,,,
if you're reading this blog and haven't yet sent the LA Times an email, take a couple of minutes of your time and please do.

I'm glad they're not releasing the video. That would definitely be too much information for me to process.

I prefer my news filtered. It's easier that way.

Yes, that's sarcasm.

Good. Real people suffer more from institutional journalistic

you. It's a much more honorable profession in the new millenium.

The Times' glory days are far behind it and I don't see them recovering. They are a joke here in L.A. I wish the Herald Examiner was still around, they kept the Times on their toes.

Yes, money talks, but I don't think you have the right angle. I think we should play on their emotions: A claim should be made that someone will buy the tape from the LA Fishwrap in order to save a reporter's job. Think of it as 'Save The Journalists', a new charity for the downsized, now poverty-stricken wordsmiths. I'm sure some journalist will volunteer for the heart-tugging photo (of them lying on the beach) which could be used in ads. "For only pennies a day, you can help feed some poor, journalist wanker (arugula). . . ."

Any chance that an MSM media critic like Howard Kurtz would pick this up?

Maybe Obama kissed Khalidi on the cheek like Hillary kissed Suha Arafat. Or maybe it's what Khalidi said on the lecturn (not what Barry said to Khalidi) that's the explosive part of the video? Like, Barry agrees with me that Israel is a racist apartheid state and will do everything necessary to end the Zionist regime and allow the Palestinians their full rights and their right to return to their ancestral home. Maybe Rashidi said, he enjoyed all those talks in the home of Ayers with Obama and Michelle and how they found common ground against the Nazi like American regime. Maybe Rashidi said, I want to give a shout out to Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn who ghost wrote and edited my book, just like they did for Obama. What a great American success story, Ayers and Dohrn. Change we can believe in.

Charles...Might I suggest we (you) initiate a boycott of the LA Times. with falling circulation already, maybe we could have a real effect

The famous video of a vet addressing politicians at

that has been seen more than 12 million times now seems to be unavailable on youtube. I call this shenanigans!
