Tuesday Morning Traffic Surge Open Thread

Open | Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 8:36:26 am PDT

Lots of email complaints that the site is running slowly this morning — we know. The reason: our traffic has been very high since yesterday morning. As we write, there are more than 6,000 people online, and we had over 180,000 page views yesterday.

We’re in discussions with our host to upgrade our web server to a faster machine, which should make things better. Until then, hang in there. Help is on the way.

Ah, fresh arugula!

I'm hoping for a change to a faster machine.

Will this help you spread the wealth around to the hamsters Charles?

What can we say, people are fascinated with us....

Any idea where all the new visitors are coming from?

Whew, I was getting dizzy watching the new comment wheel going round and round.

Maybe some of these "undecided voters" are starting to make up their minds.

OT: I mailed mine and my wife's absentee ballot to FL today. McCain gets at least 2 votes and all incumbents were voted against.

A thread as open as the prairies! Or something! (Good luck with the negotiations, Charles. If I don't have LGF then I have to work, and we can't have that, now can we.)

11 reine.de.tout  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 8:48:27am

Well, what I would like to know is . . . where has the tip jar gone to?
I can't find it.
Anyone know?

Filing in through the signal shoot...It took 20 minutes and dozens of tries to get in successfully this morning. I envision as the election countdown days go down, that LGF traffic will be the highest it has ever been. GO LIZARDS!
Thanks again Charles for making this the BEST site in the US of A!

14 phoenixgirl  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 8:51:04am

ok, yesterday i watched "guess who's coming to dinner".

there is a scene where dr. prentis's and his father are having a heated discussion.
dr. prentis unleashes on his dad and says, and i'm paraphrasing, "the problem with you is you see your self as a black man and i see myself as a man".

i don't know, i thought wow, here we have a guy that is running for president decades later that is running as a black candidate. instead of a candidate. and we have people voting for him because he is black, not because he is qualified.

re: #14 phoenixgirl

Not only is it self centered and Not an intelligent thing to do, there are those in the USA who latch on to what is most important to them as a single individual and cannot see beyond common sense or even clearer, cannot see beyond their race, ethnic or religious ideology to see what an informed choice would bring to their lives and the future of this great country.
Such is the melting pot of our great country.
Thankful that there are a majority however, that can and will draw on logic and principles to make the decision that will be best for our future and our country, no matter what the petty differences are. Extreme Socialism is NOT it!

19 rawmuse  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:04:14am

Charles,

let me say one word... "Utility Hosting" (OK that's two words)

I work for one of the largest enterprise hosting companies in the world and everybody is really making the move over to the utility computing model.

I won't mention our name, so hopefully you won't think of this as a sales pitch :-)

This bypassing of parental and school authority to tell kids that they should be dictating to their parents what they will be doing on election day is just a hint of what is to come. Just as with Obama's desire to cut parents out of parental notification for abortion, what will the next steps be?

We are already seeing Obama's pleas directly to the children to manipulate their parents to and grandparents to vote for Obama.

This is what he means by bottom up - and in the spirit of Bill Ayers - the kids set the agenda.

Somebody who is better with links than I am needs to put this on the front page.

"We can't win this election unless every Obama supporter gets out and votes on November 4th. To do that, we need a massive team of volunteers helping us. Can you take next Tuesday off from work, join the final push, and make sure that everyone who supports Barack turns out to vote?" asks the Web page hosting the ad.

When he loses, we'll be seeing calls for a general strike.

Why is West funding Abbas' hate TV?

Would you sign a check for $120 million and hand it over to a former terrorist without carefully supervising what he was doing with your money? That's exactly what Norway, chair of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee that co-ordinates international funding to the Palestinian Authority, is doing with its taxpayers' money.

In response to extensive documentation by Palestinian Media Watch about the hate promotion on official Palestinian Authority-Fatah TV, Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre recently made a series of statements defending PA TV that indicate he is totally ignorant of its content. Then, to put his money where his misinformed mouth is, he wrote another check for 85 million kroner to the PA under Mahmoud Abbas, whose office controls PA TV.

The Norwegian foreign minister is certainly not evil. Neither are other Europeans. Neither are the Americans, whose recent agreement to give the PA an additional $150 million puts their 2008 aid to the PA at more than $700 million - more than the US pledged at a donors' conference in December 2007.

But these countries throw money at Abbas's feet with such infatuation you'd think he was a clone of Mother Teresa. Unfortunately, if his messages to Palestinian children are any indicator, Abbas seems far more like the clone of his predecessor, the terror lord Yasser Arafat, than a peacemaker.

27 Son of the Black Dog  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:17:20am

On the front page there is a link to a Debbie Schlussel article about Michelle Obama purchasing her clothes online.

Now have the Obamas paid State of Illinois USE TAX on those online purchases, as they are obligated to do under Illinois law.

28 J.S.  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:18:04am

It's taken me over an hour to get here...I've switched from IE to FireFox...The IE would not allow a log-in -- the log-in box was dimmed out (after entering user name and password, I couldn't log-in -- the login box was dimmed). So switched to FireFox (still slow loading times). (Ok, I'm suspicious. First there was Glenn Beck getting the boot 2 weeks prior to the election; then I heard a radio talk-show host was suddenly fired (too anti-Obama); then there are "news" networks being banned by the Obama camp (due to Biden interviews); now a sudden surge which denies normal use of LGF? hmmm...An attempt at censorship here or what?) Anyway, the slowdown is annoying...hope the problem's rectified soon...

re: #23 Who Watches the Watchmen?

Irony, this action to call off on election day to work for his campaign. So, it's okay to call off work when this country is based on the foundation of citizen work, but only is it benefits the socialist agenda! This is ludicrous. He'll probably try to make this a National government Holiday!

Although that phrase has become intertwined with a certain a**clown ahem, politician known for his high-priced coiffure, I actually do believe Charles and the Mighty Lizard Council of Elders when he/they issue this decree.

"To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully," the Democratic presidential candidate wrote in his memoir, "Dreams From My Father." "The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists."

Isn't that the ultimate sellout of ones self to be popular instead of being true to himself? And this ass is one round of voting from potentially being POTUS as the Democrack nominee... shame on the MSM and the Democrack party for shoving this POS onto the rest of us...

McCain landslide next week... (whistles passing the graveyard)

47 snowcrash  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 11:06:51am

Am glad for all the traffic but had a really hard time connecting to the site this am. Hope all the new viewers become regular readers, ad revenue increases and we get massively bigger hamsters!

48 redinla  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 11:26:07am

I must say the number of posts bitching to Charles about the slowness of the site or the inability to refresh and get new comments is really tiresome and time consuming to read. He knows it's a problem and surely he's the type of guy to fix what can be fixed when he can fix them. I would bet the site would move faster if those who constantly post they can't reload fast enough, etc. would just take a breath or email the issues rather than bogging things down.

That said, congrats on the increased traffic.

49 grandma  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 11:35:43am

Charles,

You just take your time and improve whatever your superior skills can. As for me, I’m retired and have all day to wait it out. I don’t need instant gratification anymore. In fact, while your site is loading it gives me time to pour another glass of vino. Just chalk it up to the “price of popularity”. We will all hang in with you.

You mean FEMA?

51 Conservative in Liberal Hands  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 1:10:06pm

Charles -

A long time ago, when I started reading this fine publication, I thought I saw a Pay Pal donation link on the website. Hosting costs $$$'s and judging from the thread "Tuesday Morning Traffic Surge Open Thread", it sounds like you're going to incur an additional expense.

May I respectfully suggest that you provide for a method whereby Lizards may - voluntarily, and without much prompting - support LGF?

Thank you for providing such a valuable service.

52 snopercod  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 1:29:52pm

Well Charles, you brought it on yourself. This is the best darn website around. Your "Top Links Overall" feature filters down all the fluff into what is essential reading. As we say here in the South: "Ya done good." Thanks!

So glad to see that you're readable again. I logged on last night (through FireFox) and saw a lot of screen gibberish. In addition to the troll gibberish, that is.

I first heard about you through the Bruce Elliott radio show on WBAL 1090AM Baltimore, MD. I needed to get a better take on national politics other than the extreme left-wing skew here in the once-great state of Maryland. Check out the Cato Institute ratings of state governors to see where the US will head under Barak Obama. It used to be said around here, "As goes Maryland, so goes the country!"

We're SCREWED '08 if Obama wins
