LA Times Still Stonewalling on Khalidi-Obama Video

Politics | Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 8:57:21 am PDT

At the Washington Post, Howard Kurtz takes notice of the Los Angeles Times’ refusal to release a videotape of Barack Obama at a party for former PLO spokesman Rashid Khalidi (Kurtz calls him a “Palestinian rights advocate and Israel critic”). And the McCain campaign has noticed this too.

The L.A. Times ran a story last April about a 2003 party at which Obama said nice things about Palestinian rights advocate and Israel critic Rashid Khalidi, who he said reminds him “of my own blind spots and my own biases. . . . It’s for that reason that I’m hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation — a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid’s dinner table [but around] this entire world.”

The McCain camp tells me the paper refused to release a videotape of the remarks that it had obtained. Little Green Footballs calls that “media malfeasance of an almost astounding degree. They have a video that could change the stakes in this election and they’re hiding it.”

“We’re not a video service,” Doyle McManus, the Times Washington bureau chief, tells me. “We’re not suppressing anything. We were the first to report on these facts.” He declines to say whether the paper considered posting the video.

The Los Angeles Times is currently hemorrhaging readers, laying off employees, and losing advertisers. Releasing this video would be very good for their bottom line; a lot of people are interested in it. Does this mean they’re more invested in seeing Barack Obama win the election than in being profitable? Shouldn’t the remaining shareholders in the company be concerned about this attitude?

Newsbusters has video of the Bill O’Reilly show; the Times told him there’s an “ethical problem” with releasing the tape. Right.

Newsbusters has the email address of the owner of the LA Times, Sam Zell, if you’d like to add your voice to the many who are demanding a release of the video.

How can we make the right decision for our country if the media hides important information?

There, I've added my two cents. I'll publish any reply I get over at my blog.

As a southern CA resident, I am frequently called and asked if I'd like to subscribe to the L.A. Times. I always tick off a list of things that bother me about the Times and end with, "even if you offered me the Times for free, I'd turn it down". I guess my list of reasons just got longer.

6 Lee Coller  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:06:37am

Ethical problem? Since when was the LA Times ethical? Or maybe that's the problem, it would be ethical to release the tape, so they won't?

If the LA Times sees the description of the video being sufficient for telling the whole story, then it is fair to ask if a description of the Rodney King beating would have sufficed instead of letting the public see the video and judge the event for themselves.

16 DeafDog  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:14:21am

Forgetting the video for a second, has the Obama campaign commented on what Obama's relationship and attitude is towards Khalidi?

17 coquimbojoe  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:16:51am

I am truly worried for the US if Obama is elected. If he is and things go to hell in a hand basket, the media will probably be surprised to find citizens with pitchforks and torches at their front door.

18 methuseleh  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:17:09am

All conservatives, and all fair-minded persons of any political stripe, should call whatever Obama propaganda organ (i.e., newspaper or magazine) they subscribe to, and cancel their subscriptions on November 5th. They should also call whatever broadcast or cable news outlets they watch/listen to and tell them they will no longer be watching/listening to them, again on November 5th. Finally, they should call the advertisers on the above media outlets and explain to them why their ad dollars are being wasted.

This should be done regardless of who wins on November 4th.

19 lawhawk  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:17:10am

The LAT continues losing readers, and continues to make cuts in the newsroom, which further erodes their ability to gather news. At some point, they're going to have to decide whether this venture continues or folds.

I could care less either way.

They've clearly shown themselves to be nothing but yellow journalists who refuse to do their job and report the news. They've decided that this particular video isn't newsworthy. If it isn't, why not release it to show that to be the case. Why withhold it from public view unless there is something there, because the act of spiking the video suggests that there is something to the video that would be bad news for the Obama campaign.

The LAT would be smart to release the video, if only to undermine the claims that there's something to hide.

It's not the crime, but the coverup, and the LAT has yet to learn that old lesson.

The LAT is covering up that video for the Obama campaign. There can be no other excuse, despite what they claim.

23 DistantThunder  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:19:03am

For those people to whom this video would make a difference - the knowledge of the existence of the tape and it's contents should be sufficiently impressive and should be a game changer.

Obama has already been a disasterously poor example of a candidate: repeatedly lying, throwing people under the bus, unethically withdrawing from public financing, making threats against the media, trashing the Constitution and advocating socialism, insulting religious Americans, and the list goes on.

A video tape of even more egregious behavior is another bucket in an ocean of evidence that his man-child, with NO military experience, will be disasterous.

24 Jimash  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:19:29am

"“We’re not a video service,” Doyle McManus,"

Perhaps Mr. McManus should familiarize himself with the website of the LA Times.

25 RickZ  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:19:42am

I think the LA Fishwrap is editing that tape as I type, taking out the juicy Jew-hating bits to make Obama sound Presidential. They'll probably even leave in Obama's -er's and -uhm's to make him appear human. Who knew McLuhan's 'the media is the message' would end up with a whole 'nother meaning?

26 Sharmuta  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:20:02am

I'm thinking mr. khalidid should be on the lookout for any and all buses.

27 notutopia  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:20:55am

"ETHICAL problems"? Damn right there's a major ethical problem. It has to do with purposefully withholding relevant information that could reflect on the true character of Obama and his associations, validate issues relating to his extreme socialistic ideology and who knows, maybe even international security issues concerning Israel and Palestine and most importantly the USA. Media Malfeasance is an ETHICAL issue!
This is all about SAVING the story to get the most bang for the LA Times buck
(literally fame and finances). They are going under. If they release it now, the story will get them 8 days play, But, if they hold off, This tape will get them months of play with fame and fortune.

Ok lizards,
I have written an email to a DJ on a local radio station. Read it and give me some pointers.

Dear Mike,

I am a small business owner who chose to play 97.9 kiss FM in my store. As of today, I will no longer be playing your station in my business. Your comments regarding the interview of Sarah Palin given by MJ this morning were unfounded. You sir are not qualified to make an assumption as to the intelligence of governor Palin given your occupation and the limited time Ms. Palin had to speak (8 minutes). You may have opinions, however, voicing them over the airwaves is bad for business. The best in your business remain neutral in public as to their political leanings.

Why don't you bring up Joe Biden and his not-so-smart comments, blatant untruths or his inability to answer questions? Why don't we speak about Barack Obama's associations with domestic terrorists or his Marxist views? Do you even know what that could mean for this country?

You stated Palin "sounded kinda dumb". It is a mistake to assume someone lacks intelligence because of the way they speak, just like it would be wrong to assume someone is stupid because they are fat or ugly. I would suggest to you that you keep your misguided opinions to yourself while you are on the air.

OT...sorry

I've already had one employee ask about this...my response was take advantage of early voting or stand in line on election day, But what ever you do...vote.

Obama Urges Voters to Take Day Off From Work to Help Campaign on Election Day

The "Take the Day" campaign suggests voters sign up to go to battleground states or work in phone banks closer to home on Nov. 4, when they would normally be at work or in class.

"We can't win this election unless every Obama supporter gets out and votes on November 4th. To do that, we need a massive team of volunteers helping us. Can you take next Tuesday off from work, join the final push, and make sure that everyone who supports Barack turns out to vote?" asks the Web page hosting the ad.

On the trail, Obama has been encouraging voters to go to the polls for early voting, and reports from several states are that Democrats are going into the voting booths in larger numbers than Republicans.

John McCain's campaign, though, scolded Obama for encouraging voters to skip work on his behalf.

Next thing Obama will want is for everyone to send him a Birthday present and tax the employers to pay for the gift...oh and it will be a national holiday.

But, having asked it, our sincere answer is that of the factors driving coverage of this election — and making it less enjoyable for McCain to read his daily clip file than for Obama — ideological favoritism ranks virtually nil.

The main reason is that for most journalists, professional obligations trump personal preferences. Most political reporters (investigative journalists tend to have a different psychological makeup) are temperamentally inclined to see multiple sides of a story, and being detached from their own opinions comes relatively easy.

63 Dave_Da_Kid  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:39:07am

He's bringing together foreign, America hating, bomb tossing, terrorists (Khalidi) and domestic, America hating, bomb tossing, terrorists (AyersDorn) and showing them that they have more in common than they thought. Imagine what a world we could live in if we just put aside our differences and become one with the ONE.

Perhaps the current theory afoot, that the mainstream media think they have far more to gain from an Obama victory than from reporting stories that will draw readers, is in play.

Their cheerleading will be subsidized and legally protected by an Obama government. Can't make a profit in a free market, so they want to go on the dole in return for carrying water for The One.

Releasing this video would be very good for their bottom line; a lot of people are interested in it. Does this mean they’re more invested in seeing Barack Obama win the election than in being profitable? Shouldn’t the remaining shareholders in the company be concerned about this attitude?

I think it is very clear in both the print and broadcast media that the employees in fact couldn't care less if the enterprise makes a profit. Their leftist calling is far more important than that of the capitalists pigs that own the media. They are confident that if their employers go under, another one waits in the wings and they can start over again.

Rashid Khalidi is lying slime. I once saw him a few years ago debate the Jerusalem Post's editor David Makowsky at Chicago's posh University Club, and Khalidi made an offhand remark saying that the current issues between Israel and Palestian's (then Arafat) will be replaced or overshadowed by Pali demands for a "contiguous" state. No one, not even Makowsky, questioned him on it.

After the talk I approached Khalidi and asked him what he meant specifically by "contiguous state" and he denied saying it, and then said, well, uh, if I did say it, that's not what I meant.

Sounds like an Obama-nite to me.

Anyway, The LA Slimes is owned by the Chicago Tribune. And most of their emails are first initial, last name@tribune.com, i.e. SZell@tribune.com
Though, with Zell, I wouldn't be surprised if he had something like Sam@tribune.com

I'm going to try that. But don't be surprised if it doesn't go through. Whatever Zell's politics (?) the gatekeepers at the Pravda, er, Chicago Tribune are sure to be Che-bambi's footsoldiers and happy to withhold the truth if it helps their cause.

Most political reporters (investigative journalists tend to have a different psychological makeup) are temperamentally inclined to see multiple sides of a story, and being detached from their own opinions comes relatively easy

Political reporters are different from us commonfolk. They're 'specially trained to see things in ways that regular people can only imagine...That's why they know better than us what we need to see.

I feel much better knowing that really smart people are deciding what information should be withheld from me and my fellow bumkins.

Gee, I wonder what could possibly be unethical on this tape. Nothing to do with radical Palestinians, the Obama's, and their friend Billy Ayers bashing Israel and Jews I'm sure. Right?

Maybe not even so much what Obama said, but what was said as he sat there (like he did in the Trinity Church pew).

At Khalidi's 2003 farewell party, for example, a young Palestinian American recited a poem accusing the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of Palestinians and sharply criticizing U.S. support of Israel. If Palestinians cannot secure their own land, she said, "then you will never see a day of peace."

One speaker likened "Zionist settlers on the West Bank" to Osama bin Laden, saying both had been "blinded by ideology."

In a time where personal ideology is waning, I’m sure the 75 employees you are laying off are more than happy to receive pink slips so that you may continue to thwart the efforts of others asking you for total transparency. Braver still, is that you thumb your nose at your advertisers knowing that by simply releasing this tape you could easily increase your readership by 20% overnight.

This sort of leadership needs to be recognized, and I for one am also sending this along to your advertisers so we can all stand by you in this time of unity against those who would not recognize your courageous stance.

Sincerely,

Here's what's happening. The Obama people know that to get the tax and spend programs underway, they've got to hit more people who pay taxes, which means that they can't just keep it to people making over $250,000 or $200,000. It is extremely curious that after trying to hammer home the $250k level, that they're abandoning it in favor of much lower levels, which means many in the very bastions of blue land (NYC, LA, SF), will get hit by these very tax increases they claim to support in theory. Imagine the wailing as these folks see their take home pay disappear under the fog of tax hikes.

Somali youth was killed 'in row over alcohol and Islam'

A gang of five men beat a Somali teenager to death because of a row over Muslims drinking alcohol, a court heard today.

Ahmed Mohammed Ibrahim, 17, was repeatedly hit across the head with a samurai sword, baseball bat, machete and metal pole after being chased in Sefton Park, Liverpool, in March this year.

The teenager became embroiled in the fight after accompanying his cousin, Ahmed Mahamoud Ahmed, 16, to a "straightener" – a one-on-one fight – with the alleged killer Ali Mohammed, 19.

Liverpool crown court heard how Mohammed is believed to have accused Ahmed of breaking Muslim rules by drinking alcohol and held him down while a friend hit his head with a bat.

Obama Redefines Christianity and
Socialism As Election Nears -
Bill Wilson

A recent poll of voters indicated that Christians were about evenly split between supporting Republican John McCain or Democrat Barack Hussein Obama for President. It seems that McCain has convinced most Christians that he is a Christian, but not necessarily a strong enough Christian. Obama has convinced many that he is a Christian, however, his commitment to his faith by his actions is sorely lacking. Hence, its about 50/50 among Christians, who essentially determined the last two presidencies by their strong vote en masse for George W. Bush.

McCain tried to solidify the conservative Christian base by choosing Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. While this solidified some of the most conservative Christians, it appears McCain still has not closed the deal. Meanwhile, there are many Christians who are voting for change no matter what. Obama represents that change. But Christians are warned in Philippians 2:12-13 to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” If Christians are to do of God’s good pleasure, then they had better be forewarned of the ramifications of voting for Obama.

One of my favorite Audrey Hepburn movies is Roman Holiday- sheltered Princess escapes her embassy to wander the streets of Rome, where an American reporter finds her. He calls his photographer friend and they take the princess out on the town, all the while getting an exclusive story with pictures to go with it while not revealing to her that they are the press.

But alas- the newsman and princess fall in love, and she realizes she must go back and fulfill her duty to her country, and they have a romantic and tearful farewell.

The next day, at the embassy, there is a press conference, where the princess and newsman come face to face, and the photographer gives her the pictures he took of her. They've decided not to run the story, because the newsman has some integrity and cannot hurt the lady he came to love.

This movie could not be made today. If it was, the newsman would betray the princess because today's newsmen have no integrity.

I was supposed to stay with lib friends in New England last night, and was watching TV with the husband when McCain came on the news. I had studiously been avoiding politics on this visit. Suddenly, the husband starting ranting about about McCain and Bush. I made a couple of comments about Obama's questionable fund raising, and he look at me and just starting screaming, " ing Jews" with a deranged look on his face, and just walked out of the room and up to his office. I grabbed my bag, apologized to his wife, a very old and dear friend who then forced me to explain the situation, and I left, having to find a hotel on my way home.

What the hell is going on?

172 doppelganglander  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 10:16:38am

I think the ultimate solution for the media problem is for conservatives to gain control of more media outlets. Since so many of the big names are failing, I expect them to be available at bargain-basement prices in the next two years. Fox News does a good job, but imagine if a few conservative bazillionaires, or a very large number of small conservative shareholders, got a hold of the Tribune Corp. or the New York Times. The senior editors could all be replaced with competent, unbiased individuals, and the investigative reporters would go after these kinds of stories knowing they'll see daylight.

I have no money and I am not a businessperson, so I'll just throw this out there for anyone who knows how to pull such a thing together. I think it would be a money-making machine.

The income tax was instituted as a way to wean the nation from tarriffs, and to pay for WWI. The tax rates were extended and raised repeatedly to fund WWII, and then into the Cold War. Consider that during WWII, the highest tax bracket was 88% - for income over $5 million. That isn't mere redistribution. That's confiscation.

It ranged from 1% on income up to $20k to 7% on income over $500,000 when it was instituted in 1913.

A history of tax rates is here. It's a fascinating study in how the tax rates have changed over time, and not for the better in most cases.

re: #136 lawhawk

Here's what's happening. The Obama people know that to get the tax and spend programs underway, they've got to hit more people who pay taxes, which means that they can't just keep it to people making over $250,000 or $200,000. It is extremely curious that after trying to hammer home the $250k level, that they're abandoning it in favor of much lower levels, which means many in the very bastions of blue land (NYC, LA, SF), will get hit by these very tax increases they claim to support in theory. Imagine the wailing as these folks see their take home pay disappear under the fog of tax hikes.

The threshold level keeps dropping, because the programs Obama seeks to fund will create a big sucking sound out of everyone's pockets.

People are forgetting one important fact. Obama isn't telling the truth about anything he's going to do. It will all be much more severe than we are being told. So no need to argue the $250,000 or $150,000 point. No one knows (or is telling us) how low the qualifying amount of earning will actually go.

Although we cannot know the future, historically bad weather, even just rainy and messy, tends to favor GOP turnout.

The reason for things like motor-voter and ACORN is that leftists tend not to do things if it is too inconvenient, whereas right-leaning people will go the extra mile. It is tied to the very core of their political philosophy of personal responsibility.

Just recently the last call from some guy representing the LA Times became very abusive in response to my comments so I just hung up the phone on him.

The LA Times is in big trouble here losing so many subscribers. Going after companies that advertise in this paper would really hurt them and eventually might help to close this paper down. What is the point of having a free press when all we get is a biased propaganda press. Why doesn't the LA Times just change the name to "Obama" and be done with the pretense.

For the American Jewish community there is a direct correlation between between the amount of Jewish education and Jewish observance and the stance on the election. The more "Jewish" they are the less Democrat/Obama they are, and vice versa. Among the Orthodox, the election polls run to 70 percent McCain-Palin.

One of the problems with MSM is too many of them are taught the concepts of "Social Justice" and nothing about economics. People read the newspaper mainly for: Obits, Sports, Comics, Crossword/Suduko/Puzzles, Community News not covered by TV, Op-ed, lifestyle (TV, Food, Music, Arts etc), and in-depth news analysis. So what do most newspapers do? They drop obits unless you pay, drop or shrink the boxscores and other sports stats from the sports page, shrink the Comics to a size no one can read and pack the funnies page with politically correct garbage rather than actually funny strips, cut back on community news and actual reporting for cut and paste wire service reports (which one can get from the internet), drop the op from op-ed leaving only one viewpoint (forcing their readers back to the internet). Then they wonder why their papers continually lose readers. The LA Times has a guarenteed ad revenue generating story and rather than give the public what the public will buy. The LA Times would rather shoot itself in the foot in the name of their "Social Justice" ideology than make a bit of cash profit. Of course it is alot harder to feed a family on "Social Justice" and ideology and alot easier to feed the family using cash when at the supermarket.

Historically, college students are the LEAST likely to vote if it is inconvenient.
Whether it is raining, they stayed up too late partying and celebrating the night before, whether they live out of state and didn't bother to apply for an absentee ballot --since many do not have residency in their college town or it is just anti-climactic on election day.

They are the most enthusiastic and even passionate working IN an election, will show up for rallies, voter canvassing and phone banks but aren't the one's who make a strong effort to vote!

I agree with you on this. I looked at his tax plan from his website and it raised more questions than it answered. He is stating a lot of things without really having a plan, and then if he changes his plan it, such as he did with mortgage credits, it raises more questions. For instance, he now says the mortgage credits are for those who do not itemize and they must have a job. I know that as soon as I got a mortgage it benefited me to itemize, so it raises the question to me of who exactly will benefit from this tax credit. Well, I had a question about who gets a mortgage without a job, and I have answered that myself. But, the question does come up with what happens to the person who has a mortgage and a job and doesn't itemize and they lose their job, do they still qualify for the mortgage credit? How many hours a week or year do you have to work to qualify? If these questions come off the top of my head just by looking at his tax plan, why aren't these questions and others being asked?

The problem is that people just accept his words without looking at his plans. They sound great until you read them.

Exactly, which I why, I think, it's dragging its heels on this video.

It's hoping that, once in office, the Obamassiah will reward them, and even take care of all those pesky internet bloggers who are taking away their business.

re: #206 debutaunt

Look at it this way, debutaunt:

Doesn't look as if those people were really worth knowing. (I mean, if you actually had to explain to the wife why you didn't want to stay around a guy screaming "(*(&&^^%g Jews!"----these people are never going to get it anyway, so don't waste your time).

223 TalkinKamel  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 11:53:08am

Sorry, biff, I see it was you debutaunt was responding to in #206.

But my answer is still the same. These people are just a waste of your precious time anyway.

re: #174 Clio

I've thought about that myself, Clio---and that's one reason why I'm convinced that this video must contain something really, REALLY bad to make the Times so antsy about showing it!

It must be light-years beyond your usual Jew-hate/bash-Israel/Poor, oppressed lil' Palestine stuff---which probably would win Obama more votes, to be honest. It's just got to be something really raw! Bill Ayers sitting on Obama's lap? Occult rituals? Human sacrifice? The anti-christ arriving in cloud of sulfer and brimstone as guest of honor? George Soros announcing plans for world domination? Dogs and cats living together? What is the Times hiding?

(But, never mind that! Let's all talk about Sarah Palin's wardrobe! And her voice! She sounds kinda dumb, doesn't she? And wasn't McCain smoking in one of his POW videos? What a bad influence on our youth!----sarc. What else?)

Of course there's an ethical problem with releasing the tapes. The released tapes would reveal that the original story had been less than candid, and that would make the L.A. Times look bad.

That, in turn, would damage the reputation of the press.

The L.A. Times is friends with other newspapers.

It's unethical to damage the reputation of your friends.

re: #24 Jimash

"“We’re not a video service,” Doyle McManus,"

Perhaps Mr. McManus should familiarize himself with the website of the LA Times.

La Times Video Service

Seriously, they have 192 video's on the presidential election on the home page. I decided not to count the video's in all the other categories but video's like "local bikers fighting to take back a popular trail" are offered. Why not settle the debate and let everyone see what they have? More hits equals more $ for advertisers.

# 81 Vagabond Trader:
"Gee, I wonder what could possibly be unethical on this tape. Nothing to do with radical Palestinians, the Obama's, and their friend Billy Ayers bashing Israel and Jews I'm sure. Right?
"
----------------

reposted from yesterday,,,,,,here's some speculation as per the content of the videotape the LA Times is hiding from the American people:

1. Barack Obama participating in the night's festivities, taking his turn at the lectern toasting the terrorist Rashid Khalidi, toasting the PLO and bashing "the Zionists". And maybe a shot or two at "whitey" while he's at it.

2. Barack Obama and his wife Michelle are shown sitting at the same table with domestic terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorhn. Glasses are raised and a jolly ol' Jew-bashing time is had by the good friends Barack, Michelle, Bill and Bernadine.

3. Barack Obama takes his turn giving a speech bashing "the Zionists". Barack returns to his table where the above # 2 takes place.

OK then, I admit it, that's not just mere speculation as to the contents of the video and I may be engaged in some "audacity of hope".

re: #171 biff

First, my condolences. And also my deep congratulations for your dignified act of courage in leaving. Conservatives know that the current Left is filled w/anti-Semites. I think this phenomena is just becoming evident within my Jewish husband's family - who are all left-leaning - and are currently experiencing varying degrees of cognitive dissonance. I only pray the dissonance grows loud enough to dissuade them from pulling levers for Obama.

If it is a forgery, and it damages the Republican- lets release it a month before the election. If it is authentic, and could damage the Democrat, lets bury it. Something stinks here. Maybe we should get Dan Rather on the case....

Doyle me old classmate (or so I've read): get real.

235 My 2 Cents  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 2:30:38pm

I wonder how much money the LA Times could get if they were to simply sell the tape to the highest bidder. In addition, I wonder how much they may have already been paid to NOT release it. Either way, why don't they simply offer it for sale at their website? They could sure use the money, right? And whoever is willing to pay the most for it could then either put it on YouTube or bury it.

236 claire  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 2:45:59pm

LA Times- You can only hold the 1/2 of your audience that agrees with your relentless partisanship. Why do you want to lose the other half? Why are you taking this risk?

re: #216 jimmyk

Spreading Rumours is not the answer. Think about what you have suggested. People are confused enough already and distrust of the only faction who has guts and courage to expose the rumours and lies will be victorious! Don't fall for the easy road path.
