LA Times: 'We Keep Our Promises'

Politics | Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 9:42:04 pm PDT

You’re not going to believe this one.

I certainly don’t.

McCain campaign accuses L.A. Times of ‘suppressing’ Obama video.

“The Los Angeles Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided to us by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not release it,” said the newspaper’s editor, Russ Stanton. “The Times keeps its promises to sources.”

This is excuse #4 from the LA Times. It took them three days to come up with this.

OK, was going to post this yesterday. It's probably too late as it is...

I didn't think the minons at LA Times would consider releasing the video. As I said before I think that the only hope would be to contact the publishers and chief executive of the LA Time, Eddy W. Hartenstein.

Now, I don't have his email or business phone contact information. I only have an address which I crossed referenced with a previous FEC filing. It's probably too late for any mail to make an impact but it might be worth a shot.

Since we can't post addresses here I can only direct you to whitepages.com. Once at the whitepages.com site look for the only "Eddy W. Hartenstein" shown in the listing in Thousand Oaks, CA.

The LA TImes is run by hypocrites.

That tape must really be damning.

What could possibly be so foul and unforgivable that they would go to such great lengths to hid it from the voting public?

Don't Dance on the Times' Grave

Recent circulation numbers showing continued, substantial declines of traditional newspapers give me an excuse to make a point I have wanted to make for some time.

I am a frequent critic of newspapers. I think they have lost focus on the hard-hitting investigative journalism which used to be their highest and best calling, instead considering reiteration of an activist's press release sufficient to check the journalism box on some particular issue. When investigative reporting does occur, it almost always is focused to support the dominant or politically correct outcome, rather than to really challenge conventional wisdom. Media coverage of any technical issue involving science or statistics or economics is often awful, in large part because journalism is too often the default educational path of folks who want to avoid numbers. Any time I have been on the inside of some issue receiving coverage, I have generally been astounded by how little the print descriptions matched reality. Now that I am interviewed more as a source for articles, I never think my views are well-quoted (though that may be my fault for not talking in sound bites). And, like many, I get irritated that the media's arrogance and self-referential reporting seems to increase in direct proportion to their drop in circulation.

All that being said, the world without healthy newspapers is a bad thing.

First, we bloggers can blather on all day about being the new media, but with the exception of a few folks like Radley Balko, we're all editorial writers, not reporters (I consider my role at Climate-Skeptic.com to be more like journalism, but only because there is such a glaring hole on that topic in traditional media). I couldn't do what I do here, at least on this particular blog, without the New York Times and the Washington Post. I'm a remora feeding on their scraps. I can't bring down the big fish by myself, I can only feed on the bits they miss.

Second, and perhaps more important in this world of proposed reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine, print media is the mode of speech best protected by the First Ammendment. This isn't the way it should be -- all speech should be equal -- but in reality goofy regulatory regimes for radio, TV, and even the Internet all offer the government leverage points for speech control they don't have with the print media. It's why half the dystopic sci fi novels out there have a world dominated by TV -- because that is where government has the most control of speech.

So here's hoping you guys at the NY Times get your act together.

This brings up an interesting question. If 0bama becomes president, and reinstates the fairness doctrine, how will all these pro-dem papers deal with it? Every time they praise 0bama, they have to know that there will be a concerted effort to deman equal time.

re: #7 ggt

Can we get a subpeona? Justice Department --somebody?

THE PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW.

No, the Justice Department can only issue a subpoena if they have good reason to suspect the footage contained evidence relevant to a criminal investigation. Bottom line, if the LA Time refuses to release the tape, there is nothing short of an all out assault on their building that can make them give it up. And I am not prepared to recommend that course of action. We're not going to see that tape. We should keep pounding on them on this issue, but we should not expect to see the tape.

27 Edouard  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:51:13pm

I don't believe it either.

If it were true, why wouldn't the LA Times use such a line of defense immediately?

Why should the Times wait all this time and lamely submit to several days of an avalanche of irate demands before coming to the conclusion that this was what they were going to use to cover themselves?

Actually, no. The Fairness Doctrine never applied to print media, only broadcast media. The NYT would not be affected by it.

36 dentate  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:53:01pm

If true, this statement could actually work in our favor. Not nearly as good as having the video, but being able to say that the Times has video that is so damning that they had to promise a secret source not to let anyone see it...

Publicize that, let us publicly speculate on what MUST be on that video that is so bad that the times was sworn to secrecy, and let people's imagination run with it. If they want to put a stop for this let them get "permission" from their "source."

41 Abu Maven  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 9:54:31pm

How come they didn't come out with this excuse right off the bat?

Somehow, I think if it were a tape of McCain at a KKK rally that was given to the LAT under a promise of confidentiality, the LAT would find a way to release the tape. Hell, they'd probably even write an editorial patting themselves on the back for their "brave" decision to put the national interest above a silly promise.

But this is all besides the point. There was no promise.

O's half hour propaganda commercial worries me a lot. I don't have a tv - guess that will be a thread soon. This guy is just so slimy. Why oh why are people so enamored with this charlatan?

They're irritated with Bush and want to throw some bums out over the economy. Convincing people that the cure is worse than the disease is often a hard sell. Many of the people I know simply will not listen. I'm not giving up though. The stuff that's been posted here this week may be enough to turn a couple of heads and I know who I'm going to try to turn. Hopefully, I can bring a few votes on board for McCain.

McCain has no reason to hide details of his life. There's nothing damning in his record. The same likely cannot be said of Obama.

i would not be surprised if the MSM are working to try and find out the actual US enemies that McCain may have killed during his time in the military so they can interview their family members. they've shown they are capable of stooping to that level.

After you watch it, David Axelrod calls you during dinner and breathes heavily into the phone about socialized medicine.

Then seven days later your TV comes on and Michelle Obama pops out and.... you get the idea.

Let me guess- the only way you can keep from being killed by Michelle is to sign up 100 fraudulent Democratic voters through Acorn.

Don't Dance on the Times' Grave

This brings up an interesting question. If 0bama becomes president, and reinstates the fairness doctrine, how will all these pro-dem papers deal with it? Every time they praise 0bama, they have to know that there will be a concerted effort to deman equal time.

The Fairness Doctrine only applies to broadcast media. The only constitutional argument for it (a bogus one IMO) is that the gov't the the right to regulate the public airways. This is the wedge they use to regulate speech on TV and radio.

So according to the supreme court:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

DOES NOT mean the gov't can't censor radio, but

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

DOES mean abortion must be legal.

Makes perfect sense. (sarc)

I think the framers would have had a different idea.

You know, I think you have something there. Instead of actually demanding the release of the tape, it might be more effective to constantly speculate on the contents of the tape. For example, perhaps the tape is not being released because in it, Obama denies the Holocaust. Or because he recites the call to prayer in Arabic. Or because he admits to being a member of the Communist Party.

The only downside to this is that if the tape is released, it might be nothing quite as horrible as what is being speculated.

Or... the whole tape thing might be a ruse to distract us from something else entirely. A red herring so to speak.

157 capitalist piglet  Tue, Oct 28, 2008 10:18:01pm

A little bit from Hillbuzz:

All eyes are on the LA Times right now — so if the tape sits in GOP hands, it’s far better for the Times to be pressured to release it on its own, and to do so at a time when the narrative shouldn’t be about Obama’s big informercial, but instead about Obama sitting at dinner with terrorists, laughing and having a grand old time while speaker after speaker calls for the destruction of Israel and the death of all Israelis.

Because that’s what we’ve heard went on at this dinner.

All we need is one disgruntled ex-Times employee to say he saw the tape and thats what it shows. The Times will have to show the tape then.

Fun electoral facts:

* The electors who cast the actual electoral vote will meet to do so on December 15, 2008. Each state determines how their electors are chosen.

* There is no federal law requiring the electors to vote for the candidate to whom their vote was pledged in the popular election. If an elector votes in a way other than they are pledged, they are deemed a "faithless elector".

* Only 24 of the 50 states have laws punishing faithless electors. Of these 24, only Michigan nullifies the vote cast by the faithless elector as part of the punishment.

He should know by now considering that McCain brought this up today. This would all boil down to his own feelings regarding this campaign. I think it could create some interest in an otherwise dull newspaper who's only recent claim to fame is their slow demise and frequent layoffs. Basically the LA Times is unwilling to take any risks -- like most modern day papers.

Well, let's hope he's a McCain supporter. With all the uproar today, I suppose dull isn't going to fit until this dies down. Let's hope there is a tape and that they take the risk. Let's take a poll: How many of you believe poll results?

Political polls by the in-the-tank-for-Leftists MSM and pseudoscience pollsters are pretty darn bad. Iowahawk's expose of the reality of the situation, one of certain uncertainty, was brilliant.

Also consider that much "responsible" scientific research may also be bad. Complex article but here goes link:

Why Most Published Research Findings Are False
John P. A. Ioannidis

Summary

There is increasing concern that most current published research findings are false. The probability that a research claim is true may depend on study power and bias, the number of other studies on the same question, and, importantly, the ratio of true to no relationships among the relationships probed in each scientific field. In this framework, a research finding is less likely to be true when the studies conducted in a field are smaller; when effect sizes are smaller; when there is a greater number and lesser preselection of tested relationships; where there is greater flexibility in designs, definitions, outcomes, and analytical modes; when there is greater financial and other interest and prejudice; and when more teams are involved in a scientific field in chase of statistical significance. Simulations show that for most study designs and settings, it is more likely for a research claim to be false than true. Moreover, for many current scientific fields, claimed research findings may often be simply accurate measures of the prevailing bias. In this essay, I discuss the implications of these problems for the conduct and interpretation of research.

Political polls? A joke.

For all you fans of LOTRs................

"Do you like what you doth see...?" said the voluptuous elf-maiden as she provocatively parted the folds of her robe to reveal the rounded, shadowy glories within. Frito's throat was dry, though his head reeled with desire and ale.

She slipped off the flimsy garment and strode toward the fascinated boggie unashamed of her nakedness. She ran a perfect hand along his hairy toes, and he helplessly watched them curl with the fierce insistent wanting of her.

"Let me make thee more comfortable," she whispered hoarsely, fiddling with the clasps of his jerkin, loosening his sword belt with a laugh. "Touch me, oh touch me," she crooned.

Frito's hand, as though of its own will, reached out and traced the delicate swelling of her elf-breast, while the other slowly crept around her tiny, flawless waist, crushing her to his barrel chest.

"Toes, I love hairy toes," she moaned, forcing him down on the silvered carpet. Her tiny pink toes caressed the luxuriant fur of his instep while Frito's nose sought out the warmth of her precious elf-navel.

"But I'm so small and hairy, and...and you're so beautiful," Frito whimpered, slipping clumsily out of his crossed garters.

The elf-maiden said nothing, but only sighed deep in her throat and held him more firmly to her faunlike body. "There is one thing you must do for me first," she whispered into one tufted ear.

"Anything," sobbed Frito, growing frantic with his need. "Anything!"

She closed her eyes and then opened them to the ceiling. "The Ring," she said. "I must have your Ring."

Frito's whole body tensed. "Oh no," he cried, "not that! Anything but...that."

"I must have it," she said both tenderly and fiercely. "I must have the Ring!"

Frito's eyes blurred with tears and confusion. "I can't," he said. "I musn't!"

But he knew resolve was no longer strong in him. Slowly, the elf-maiden's hand inched toward the chain in his vest pocket, closer and closer it came to the Ring Frito had guarded so faithfully...

I must admit I'm starting to wonder if there really is nothing 'interesting' on the tape, or even if there might be something incriminating toward McCain.

Why would the paper admit it had the tape but were refusing to release it? Why try to draw attention to this? If it was that bad they could just deny they had anything- describe reports of the tape as nasty Republican rumours designed to hurt Obama, etc, etc.

I'm a bit worried they're trying to goad conservatives into demanding it, then do a "ok, you asked for it!" and release something that's highly damaging to the McCain campaign.

Sen Obama hasn't changed at all from his hidden past. He is sugar coating it now, this is not the person who would wield power. People only radically change their courses in life when they get religion or fall in love.

More light needs to be shone on the candidates. Sen McCain will be revealed to be pretty much what he projects. An experienced statesman who will protect the country and it's citizens. Sen Obama will... well we don't really know since he ducks from the light whenever it is shone on him and has the perps shutdown and locked out and ostracized.

Sen. Obama should just come clean about his past and all the public records of himself that he hides.

I'm a bit worried they're trying to goad conservatives into demanding it, then do a "ok, you asked for it!" and release something that's highly damaging to the McCain campaign.

This is certainly a possibility, and not beneath the shameless propagandists at the LA Times, but they're thrashing about with progressively implausible excuses suggests otherwise.

re: #20 Sharmuta

Tomorrow's excuse: we cannot release this tape due to national security concerns. Yeah, yeah.... that's the ticket! National security... because we're, uh... patriotic!

Won't work - the LA Times had zero qualms and hesitations over reporting and releasing data on the confidential and legal US use of the SWIFT financial network for tracking terrorist financial transactions. Even the remote possibility of illegality of the surveillance made it an imperative for the LA Times to report it regardless of the damage done to national security. The program was and remains legal - but it is not virtually useless since the terrorists were tipped off by the NY Times and LA Times reporting. Fundamentally, the story was nothing more than a hit piece at the Administration.

Just as keeping this video under wraps is yet another example of bias - in this case to protect Obama. Like any lie - the story excuse around this one keeps changing as pressure is placed on them.

...Suddenly, a brightly colored figure burst through the foliage, swathed in a long mantle of hair the consistency of much-chewed Turkish taffy. It was something like a man, but not much; it stood six feet tall, but could not have weighed more than thirty-five pounds, dirt included. Standing with his long arms dangling almost to the ground, the singer's body was covered with a pattern of startling hues, ranging from schizoid red to psychopathique azure. Around his pipestem neck hung a dozen strands of beaded charms and from the center, an amulet imprinted with the elf-rune Kelvinator. Through the oily snaggles of hair stared two huge eyeballs that bulged from their sockets, so bloodshot that they appeared more like two baseballs of very lean bacon.

I hate to say it. I would love to see a tape showing Obama yucking it up in a room full of anti-semites. However, I believe, THERE IS NO TAPE, at least as far as the L.A. Times goes. If there ever was a tape, it is long gone from their possesion by now, snatched up by the same ghosts who are scrubbing every damning piece of Obama history from the web and eleswhere. No amount of money is going to bring this out, as I am sure that Soros would open his checkbook to keep it under wraps. WE WILL NEVER SEE THIS TAPE.

I could be wrong, but the Obama campaign monitors blogs and certainly reads the L.A. Times. At the first hint that there was a video out there that might derail the campaign, minions would be dispatched to secure the tape at any cost. The story has been out there a while, and I think the L.A. Times is now in a position of either looking bad for not releasing the tape or looking worse for admitting they no longer have it (and why they no longer have it).

This is a distraction. For McCain supporters, this is fool's gold. I was pretty excited about it, too, until I gave it further thought. I think we are spinning our wheels and it will backfire on us, unless a tape actually shows up. And I really don't think it will. I think we need to leave this one alone right now, or face a serious credibility problem, ala the Michelle Obama audio tape.

Glad you all found zabasearch so interesting -- it's a very important site to know about and it is truly astonishing what you can learn there. And, yes, disturbing for obvious reasons. I googled myself, for instance, and the sat photo shows my the front of my domicile and my motor vehicle. Spooky -- but it is not advisable to remain unaware of this site.

BTW when you pay a fee when searching a name, you can find all kinds of public information that people wish was secret such as court judgments, tax liens, etc etc. The Obamabot doofuses in Ohio probably didn't need to expose themselves by trying to dig up dirt on Joe the Plumber on government computers, what with zabasearch and intelius.com available (the two sites do work together and link up with each other).

311 californican  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 12:05:57am

riiiiight.

312 SixDegrees  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 12:06:22am

To me, this is another piece of evidence that there is no such tape, and that the Times has gotten caught posting a fabricated (or plagiarized) story. The tape was tossed in to lend credibility. We tend to get used to the media inventing facts and sources when they can't find anything to jeer at the Right about, but this sort of unethical practice has become endemic within the press, a logical extension of Advocacy Journalism where the message you're pushing overrides facts.

Be careful here, folks. You may very well be being played by the Times. Whipped into a frenzy, only to find that the object of all your attentions doesn't actually exist, and by extension neither do any of your speculations or allegations about what may or may not be on the tape.

I think a better approach, at this point, is to hammer the Times with the point that their only proof of this story is a seemingly non-existent tape provided by an anonymous source under the most suspect of pre-conditions.

As others have pointed out, it is exceedingly odd that no other copies of this tape have turned up. Which also makes sense, if there isn't any such tape.

I didn't see this before I made my last post, but I completely agree. Let's not put this front and center; we'll wind up looking like idiots when all the speculation we've attached to this tape starts circling the drain because there is no such tape. Although I believe the whole tape reference was a clumsy fabrication aimed at lending credibility to a story and possibly to deflect charges of plagiarism, the point remains that this is not looking like a terribly fruitful avenue to pursue, and one that could wind up backfiring if given too much importance.

314 I Need A Bigger Gun  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 12:25:21am

Unfortunately, even if they were to release the tape, the chances of it being unedited are slim and none, and slim just left town on a bus.

315 Daryl Herbert  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 1:10:46am

Let me guess: tomorrow they're going to remember that they ALSO promised not to release the transcript of what Obama said.

And they promised not to show the tape to McCain aides. (That's not "releasing" it, if McCain aides get to watch it but don't get to re-distribute it.)

The LAT made a lot of promises. It's hard work remembering them all!

316 freedombilly  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 1:36:32am

This might have seemed plausible if they had given this as the first excuse and immediately. It still would have been bs but at least might have seemed plausible to some. But they are too stupid over there at the LA Times to be able to think that far forward.

It is always hard for stupid people to lie.

317 Victoire  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 2:43:36am

Assuming that there is a tape...the LA Times staff leftwing editors are no doubt finding an additional pleasure in withholding it from McCain and the public, and no doubt an even greater delight in overtly supporting Obama. Here's why: Anger at Tribune (and LA Times) owner Sam Zell - who donated reportedly about 10 times as much to McCain as to Obama, according to Politico - is also motivating this lawsuit against Zell, in protest of the financing methods used for taking the Tribune companies private about a year ago:
LA Times employees sue Tribune.

So if LAT editors feel Zell hurt them in the Tribune buy-back, they can get pay-back now by withholding the tape.

Of course, every one of them also has that unemployment threat in the back of their minds, too....

So here's a suggestion. Why not raise a bounty to pay for the tape - assuming there is a tape - because someone in that office might be able to get a copy of it, if it's on a hard drive or in a mini-cassette form...

Call it a public interest retirement package for a worthy LA Times staffer. What's it worth to the nation? To Zell?

Here's a list of staff before the latest cuts... if you'd like to email a few and see if anyone shows an interest...

Both D & E have recently been put forth as plausible when denying access to information that would embarrass Obama.

I think you're misreading it, no one's claiming that the source him/herself is the issue. Rather, if (if) you believe that the LAT made a promise to the source that they wouldn't release the video (and contrary to others, I believe there are a host of reasons why the source would demand that), then it is reasonable to assume that they would keep it confidential. To do otherwise would discourage other potential sources from coming forward.

That all said, if you don't buy their premise, then it's a smokescreen on the LAT's part.

Saw a clip from the tape. Reason we can't release it is because statements Obama said to rile audience up during toast. He congratulates Khalidi for his work saying "Israel has no God-given right to occupy Palestine" plus there's been "genocide against the Palestinian people by Israelis."

Peter, your post probably will get deleted. Phone numbers are a real no-no. Links to those phone numbers are okay.

Here is the text of the email I just sent the LA Times:

Dear LA Times:
As a reader of your paper on line, I am extremely disappointed that you have chosen to not release the tape that has been in the news that links Senator Obama and Mr. Khalidi. Your job is to serve the public. And even if your editorial board favors Senator Obama, your supression of material that may be unfavorable to Senator Obama makes your entire organization look bad. With so much of the public becoming distrustful of the mainstream media, your actions not only feed into that trend but also demonstrate clear bias in favor of Senator Obama. If Senator McCain were at a party that honored a bomber of abortion clinics or a right wing extremist, I have no doubt that you would have released the tape long ago. Can you honestly say you would handle such a situation the way you are currently handling this one?

In the long run, a free and relatively unbiased press is essential to helping Americans make the best choice about our future leaders. While you may feel you are helping Senator Obama, it may not be the case. There is plenty of "new media" that will continue to push this story. And whatever takes place on that tape, your refusal to share it with the public will ultimately hurt Senator Obama and cost him more votes than you think. As we learned during Watergate nearly four decades ago, the cover up is often times worse than the "crime."

Sincerely Yours,

There was a guy on On the Record last nite who, when asked how the Times could possible not release the video, stated that most of the time, it is due to a confidentiality agreement of some sort to protect a source. To which Greta of course asked, "Then why haven't they said that from the beginnning?". The guy had no answer for that, but it seems the Times liked his answer and they're gonna go with that now.

Not even attempting to police this site. Your post was rational and pretty good and didn't want to see it vanish for something like that.

335 Daisy  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 6:12:54am

Did the "confidentiality agreement" also include the clause "Thou shalt not divulge the fact that this was a going away party for a PLO henchman, attended by good friends Obama, Ayers and Dohrn"?

Why on earth did the source release the tape to the LA Times? Can he get it back and release it to LGF !?!

The Marxist One will redistribute intellect right after wealth.

That's just what we need, it would help wise up the population.....errrr... on second thought, nevermind....after giving up our smarts to the rest of the populace, we'd be lucky to still be able to tie our shoes(by stock in Velcro companies) and walking and chewing gum at the same time would be impossible

GET US THE TAPE THE L.A. TIMES REFUSES TO RELEASE, AND WE'LL GIVE YOU CASH!

Confessional time: I hadn't emailed the L.A. Times yet regarding this tape, having already expressed my displeasure with them some years back when I canceled the daily paper, then eventually even the Sunday edition. This after pretty much a lifetime of not being able to actually start my day without the Times.

But I'm so sick at the propect of an Obama presidency that I finally had to do it. Just shot this off to the LAT; expect their snotty, dismissive response whenever:

Like many other Angelenos and Americans, I'd like to see you release this tape. If it won't hurt Obama, why not just release it? Is the power of the people that frightening to you?

This is why the Los Angeles Times has become irrelevant and an object of ridicule, not only in L.A. but on the world stage as well. And that's coming from a native-born, lifelong Angeleno who for many, many years of my life, couldn't start the day without the Times. Those days are long gone. If the paper hadn't been decimated years ago and I hadn't canceled my subscription years ago, I'd cancel it now because of the Times involvement in suppressing a tape that might be of interest and concern to voters in what is possibly the most crucial election we've ever had.

RIP journalism.

After hearing about the latest round of layoffs, I'm also wondering if the LAT still has anyone actually working for the paper. How many people can you axe until there's no one left to report anything? And how is this supposed to benefit the paper and its supposed audience?

I know you probably don't care about this one email from one person in a city of millions. Except for the part where I'm not just one person. There are millions who feel the same way.

As a Southern Californian, it makes me sad to see the Los Angeles Times reduced to the rag it has become. Also, whatever your agenda in suppressing this tape may be, it isn't working. This won't change my vote, only confirm it.

Ugh, having problems with HTML and preview. Email was from italics to the end. :(

L.A. Time: "We keep our promises."

And our promises are as follow:
1. To keep our reader in the dark.
2. To edit all news to fit our preconceived notions.
3. To tell factual half-truths that are mostly correct... sorta.
4. To stand up against the Impending Republican Theocracy!
5. To tell the absolute truthi-ness, sort of, and to the best of our ability. For the most part.

...seems responsible to me!

Maybe they "lost" the tape and are covering up for their blunder.
