The Source of the LA Times Suppressed Video?

Politics | Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 11:02:35 am PDT

Debbie Schlussel thinks the source of the Los Angeles Times’ suppressed video of Barack Obama toasting former Arafat associate Rashid Khalidi may be Ali Abunimah, of the anti-Israel web site Electronic Intifada. It’s certainly plausible.

Ali "Deep Throat" Abunimah

2 Creeping Eruption  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 11:05:31am

If true, it makes sense why he would not release it either. McCain wins, and at the very least, it will not be good for the palis.

Now, why would Obama be at an event where anti-Israeli bigots were invited, complete with their cameras?

Now, why would the LA Times be in partnership with anti-Israeli bigots and abide by agreements with them to acquire but hide video?

Now, why would the LA Times suppress information information about a presidential election when the very purpose of a press is to bring these things to light so that people can make up their own minds?

Oh, right.

re: #3 buzzsawmonkey

But he did release it--to the LA Times.

It is the Times that is refusing to make it public.

Right, but here is a chance to make 150k or just release it to the public for free. However, that would lead to a McCain win which is probably why it will not happen.

Wow- Debbie's pissed, and I don't blame her.

Don't know if anyone's posted it, but over at The Jawa Report, they've traced the reward ($150,000) for the tape to Obama's people...

They must really want that tape.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would an anti-Israeli thug send a damaging video of his Man to major newspaper?

9 Cognito  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 11:10:54am

So I'm looking at Schlussel's web site and -- aside from some crank-like language about the LA Times 'ripping off' her story, which is a bit funny, as she is trying now to guess at the Times' sources -- I can't find the heart of her argument. She believes she has identified the source of the tape because... why? Because Abunimah's site had photos of the dinner?

I'm not saying it's impossible -- it's certainly possible. It's just not much to go on.

Leverage in case Obama does not turn out as pro pali as everyone thinks.

Would this be the same EI guy that gave the "don't worry guys, despite what Obama is saying he is really a Anti-Israel guy on our side" post on his site?

Serious question, buzz. If Abunimah did release it to the LAT, what would be his motivation? If he's anti-Israel wouldn't this hurt those efforts? Why would take the chance of providing fodder for any Republican presidential candidate?

This one has me stumped.

Sorry, Here it is.

20 yma o hyd  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 11:17:02am

It is certainly plausible that this tape might have been made by him.

Still - why give it to the LAT? What was his reason? He must have known that not all people in the USA would applaud what went on at that dinner.

I'm sorely puzzled by all this ...

Dunno if this post gets through - I'm being kicked off by those hamsters all the time - they're a temperamental bunch all of a sudden!

I'm beginning to think the questions are getting as good or better than any of the answers we're likely to get before Tuesday. I say fill the ether with questions, and let the voters fill in their own answers. One thing we've found: the Ø doesn't hold up under questioning.

The LA Times excuse nuance of this matter makes about as much sense as...someone submitting a video to youtube and then ask them not to publish it.

I am not clear how she knows there is a tape - it appears she obtained her pics at the Ali Abunimah website. She does not explain how she knows what she knows. It is disconcerting that she is more concerned about recieving credit. There is far more at stake here. Time to be a patriot. If you have info, get it out there and let everyone work on it.

I guess they didn't see the problem in those views, it wasn't a secret tape, it was a commemerative tape. Now others have whispered that they probably shouldn't have those views espoused and to shut it down

33 astronmr20  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 11:26:54am

So now the question is,

If we pay a ransom for the tape, and it goes to Abunimah, will we be financing terrorism?

34 vagabond trader  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 11:28:00am

Hmm, let me play this scenario.Wallesten writes this story, hints at a tape that this Abunimah guy gave him for safekeeping. Insurance, just in case the Obama wavers on promises made to the Pals? What is the politics of this LAT reporter, like I have to ask.

For the same reason that closeted racists feel free to spew their venom with other racists?

Or that kiddie-diddlers feel free to share their vile pr0n amongst themselves?

Or that Rev. Wright can preach his message to the church for 20 years with nary a peep of protest?

No need to get potty-mouthed, there, redc1c4.

And no, they didn't. Firstly, they've misspelled the guy's name, both first and last. Either that, or he misspelled it in his "letter" to the American citizenry.

Secondly, there's no evidence there's any such company as "Dune Capital Holdings" -- not just some company with "dune" and "capital" in the name.

Thirdly, even if there were such a company, there's no evidence linking it to this so-called reward.

Anything else? Any other names you want to call anyone?

37 Teacake!  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 12:03:32pm

The only possible coverage of this being on "mainstream" media is if Sean Hannity does a segment on all of this and my favorite host, Glen Beck.

They both have to expose this ASAP on TV as well as the radio

38 Teacake!  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 12:06:43pm

And no doubt all the people at the event will be regular guests at the White House. And I am not joking when I say I have no doubt at all the O's will build a little mosque somewhere on the WH grounds.

Um, perhaps you could learn to click on links. I made it clear in one of the links in the post to which LGF linked that Wallsten took at least one passage from me and copied it, and largely used my article and expanded upon it for his story.

Even the Politico called LA Times Wallsten for ripping me off.

local Chicago stations
even WBEZ itself

Everytime I use his quote over at the EI from 0bama telling him how he's sorry for going so soft about Israel right now, but that he's in the middle of a campaign and how soon, he will be able to tell it like it is, I think that page is going to disappear down the memory hole.
But it doesn't.
Is he so egotistical he doesn't even see what he's exposed about the "0?''.

I hesitate to tell anyone what he or she should "learn" to do, and there's a reason: Because he or she just might be right.

Seems a bit ironic, to me, that Wallsten "ripped off" your story, and yet you're having to speculate on whom his sources are.

And Debbie, the Politico did not "call" Wallsten for ripping you off. They said this, and this only:

And Debbie Schlussel sort of burns Peter Wallsten, and demands credit for (very roughly) similar passages.

If you think that's calling out Wallsten for ripping you off, then we're probably not going to have a fruitful conversation about it, no matter what.

I still don't get it. Who sends a video tape to a major newspaper expecting to not be seen?

49 johngaltlives  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 2:11:46pm

I believe the tape was made as with any event. No big deal. TO commemorate the event. Then the "source" turned it over to the times as a veiled threat to Obama. The threat is "Give me what I want or we will go public." It could be the PLO or any other wacko organization that wants something from the One. After all look at who he is friends with.

If you sleep with dogs you are gonna wake up with fleas. If you sleep with camels you will wake up with bigger fleas.

50 Nuclear Ninja  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 4:13:10pm

Has the Obama campaign had anything to say about attending this meeting?

51 Mr. Owl  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 5:23:35pm

re: #49 johngaltlives

But it makes more sense to say "We're going to send this tape to the media if you don't cooperate" than "We sent this tape to the media and if you don't cooperate we'll tell them release it." In the latter the power is turned over to a third party, which puts both of the other parties at risk.
