Rashid Khalidi and the PLO

Politics | Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 3:41:04 pm PDT

As the subject of Barack Obama’s friend Rashid Khalidi has gained traction in the media and the blogosphere, one of the talking points parroted by Obama apologists is that Khalidi was never a spokesman for Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Organization, at a time when it was listed as a terrorist group by the US government.

But is it true that Khalidi was not affiliated with the PLO?

In a word, no. Khalidi of the PLO.

As for Khalidi’s denial, there are ample grounds to question it. In 2004, when he made it, Khalidi wrote that between 1976 and 1983, “I was teaching full time as an Assistant Professor in the Political Studies and Public Administration Dept. at the American University of Beirut, published two books and several articles, and also was a research fellow at the independent Institute for Palestine Studies.” Khalidi claimed he had time for little else. “I often spoke to journalists in Beirut, who usually cited me without attribution as a well-informed Palestinian source. If some misidentified me at the time, I am not aware of it.”

Now if someone misidentified me on the pages of the New York Times—Tom Friedman, no less—I’m sure I would be aware of it. So would you. Yet Khalidi did not seek a correction of Friedman’s characterization at the time, although the Times regularly issues corrections of such mistakes, and presumably would have done the same for Khalidi.

Khalidi’s self-description as being a preoccupied professor while in Beirut also contradicts a statement he made in a 2005 interview. After listing the stations in his academic career, he is asked this question: “You were also involved politically as well?” Khalidi: “Well, yes. I was deeply involved in politics in Beirut.”

It is worth explaining what it meant to be “deeply involved in politics in Beirut” during the civil war in Lebanon. It was not at all like community organizing in Chicago. The Lebanese state had ceased to function; the political actors were all armed militias, Lebanese and Palestinian. Every individual needed to be affiliated with such an organization, if not for bread then at least for protection. Khalidi was known to be affiliated with, and protected by, Arafat’s Fatah. A 1979 New York Times report (by Youssef Ibrahim) described Khalidi as “a professor of political science who is close to Al Fatah.” In Beirut, to be “close” to an organization meant you enjoyed its protection in return for loyalty and services rendered. Khalidi’s wife also worked as an English translator for the PLO’s press agency, Wafa. So savvy journalists knew that if they wanted the Fatah spin, they could get it from Khalidi.

Rashid Khalidi and the PLO

Didn't they open for Dianna Ross and The Supremes?

6 Perplexed  Thu, Oct 30, 2008 3:45:29pm

No? He's lying about the association? Color me amazed (not).

Yasser or one of his goons shot at a former coworker of mine, father hitting the father in the leg. Her father later died from complications of that wound. What over? Arafat didn't want to pay for foodstuffs.

It should be pointed out (as I did yesterday) in the 1970s (even if Khalidi was not on the payroll for Al Fatah, but instead just associated with them) Fatah was killing American citizens, and kidnapping American diplomats.

I'd also like to point out that if Obama only had one questionable friend, it would be understandable (I have a couple of Fraternity Bros that would destroy me in a presidential election), but the facts are that Obama has too many for it to be simply a coincidence.

"FREE THE TAPE" PROTEST AT LA TIMES

Great turnout at the Los Angeles Times "Free the Tape" Protest today!

Mere Rhetoric has photos and video.
Good job!

The LA Times is holding a video that shows Barack Obama celebrating with a group of Palestinians who are openly hostile towards Israel. Barack Obama even gives a toast to a former PLO operative at this celebration. If the American public saw this radical side of Barack Obama it is unlikely he would ever be elected president.

But, the media refuses to release this video.

There are also reports that terrorists Bill Ayers and his wife Bernadine Dohrn were at the Jew-bash.

There was a protest today at the LA Times demanding that the news organization release the video they are holding of Barack Obama toasting a former PLO operative at a Jew-bash in Chicago.

Here is the announcement, via Michelle Malkin:

I just got word that there is a planned protest to try and force the LATimes to release the video of Obama/Rashid Khalidi. If people cannot physically attend the protest at the LATimes Headquarters building in downtown Los Angeles, they are encouraged to call the offices (phone number available at link), fax a request to release the video or complaint against their current stance to (fax number available at link).

Your participation in this is of the highest priority to provide information to the voters in time to present a clear picture of the Democratic candidate’s coziness with individuals possessing extreme views in direct opposition to US foreign policies.

For more information, please go to the website of the organization leading the protest effort -
[Link: www.freedommarch.org...]
(Addresses and phone numbers available at link)

And here is a petition you can sign demanding that the LA Times release its video.

Being "deeply involved" in politics in late 1970s/ early 1980s Beirut was rather like being "deeply involved" in the "liberation movement" in 1960s South Vietnam.

I.E., the person in question was either VC or an NVA "advisor".

if Khalidi was neither PLO, some other terrorist group, or a Syrian "advisor", his other possible profession would have been... corpse.

/the jihadis methods of dealing with those they defined as "neutrals" were the same as the methods intended for "enemies"

Remember kiddies, the PLO, those poor olive farmers who just banded togethter to get their pre-1967 war land back (as they are painted now), was founded in 1964.

Yes, that is the same 1964 when Arabs still controlled the areas commonly refered to today as Gaza and the West Bank. Decide for yourself, then, exactly what remaining land they wanted to "Liberate" for the "Palestinians."

Their charter also calls for the complete destruction of Israel and endorses "armed struggle," which includes blowing up babies and grandmothers on midtown buses, and shooting toddlers strapped into their car seats.

29 Irene NYC  Thu, Oct 30, 2008 3:54:07pm

From the New York Sun

February 4, 2005, By Sol Stern and Fred Siegel:

Surely one crucial moment in this transformation was Columbia’s decision to raise $4 million — including a contribution from the United Arab Emirates — to create the Edward Said endowed chair in Arab studies, and then to give the prize to professor Khalidi. We don’t doubt that Mr. Khalidi has academic credentials. Compared to professors Massad and Pappe, he is a model of decorum and moderation. But when Columbia academic officials made this choice they knew they were getting a Palestinian political activist. From 1976 to 1982, Mr. Khalidi was a director in Beirut of the official Palestinian press agency, WAFA. Later he served on the PLO “guidance committee” at the Madrid peace conference.

Both of his parents abandoned him. He was raised by his white grandparents who did what they could to properly raise him. He's thrown granny, who he owes his very existence to, under the bus.

I admit it. I am a church lady.

But I did date a Black Panther once, back in the late 60's. I thought he was cute. Turned out he wasn't.

There was this one time in Thailand back in the early 1980s and this gorgeous Thai girl that turned out to be part of some spying on US ship movement group that I knew for a very brief period. I was cleared in that incident.

I'm beginning to think that Obama lacks an internal moral compass, let alone an intellectual one, and that he doesn't care about such things. He really does not know how to pick and choose people except the ones who are extremists. Does he confuse aggressive political thuggery and downright nuttiness with acceptable political passion? Or is he an open-eyed, willing adherent to their views? The latter, methinks. Nobody can be this oblivious, can they?

David Horowitz has horror tales of what the Black Panthers were like up close.

The Weathermen were no better.

We've all read about the young woman who was trapped for sex with Bill Ayers' roommate after Ayers told her that she couldn't leave his apartment and that she'd be a racist if she didn't have sex with his married black roommate.

According to my Mom, the "line" given to young woman who wouldn't have sex with radicals was, "Oh, you're not liberated yet."

The radical lefty men were flat out misogynists.

Nothing is different today.

Not to be confused with being "known by the company you keep"? I have lefty friends who are using Thomas Friedman as their pied piper because of his opinions on energy, etc. Friedman supports Obama. [edit] Post-structural and postmodern feminism
For more details on this topic, see Postmodern feminism.
Post-structural feminism, also referred to as French feminism, uses the insights of various epistemological movements, including psychoanalysis, linguistics, political theory (Marxist and post-Marxist theory), race theory, literary theory, and other intellectual currents for feminist concerns.[107] Many post-structural feminists maintain that difference is one of the most powerful tools that females possess in their struggle with patriarchal domination, and that to equate the feminist movement only with equality is to deny women a plethora of options because equality is still defined from the masculine or patriarchal perspective.[107][108]

Judith Butler at a lecture at the University of Hamburg.Postmodern feminism is an approach to feminist theory that incorporates postmodern and post-structuralist theory. The largest departure from other branches of feminism is the argument that gender is constructed through language.[20] The most notable proponent of this argument is Judith Butler. In her 1990 book, Gender Trouble, she draws on and criticizes the work of Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault and Jacques Lacan. Butler criticizes the distinction drawn by previous feminisms between biological sex and socially constructed gender. She says that this does not allow for a sufficient criticism of essentialism. For Butler "woman" is a debatable category, complicated by class, ethnicity, sexuality, and other facets of identity. She suggests that gender is performative. This argument leads to the conclusion that there is no single cause for women's subordination and no single approach towards dealing with the issue

Slightly OT. My wife and I decided to vote early here in Rio Rancho New Mexico today. There are several polling places open for early voting, including one at the city hall. We showed up at there about 3:30 in the afternoon thinking it would be all quite on the western front, only to learn that there was a waiting line with at least a one-hour wait.

I somehow don't think these were Obama voters and expect that McCain supporters are turning out in droves. The silent majority. I have never believed that Obama could win, because I have too much respect for the basic common sense of the majority of Americans.

We decided to wait until Nov. 4 and vote at the regular polling place in an elementary school two blocks from our house. I don't like the idea of early voting, because until the campaign is done we cannot know all the truth about the candidates. That is especially true this time around for the Big O. But of course, if McCain-Palin voters want to vote early, as we tried to do, that is just fine with me. I would fight my way through a swamp full of alligators to vote for McCain-Palin, and I think there are a lot of us that feel that way.

Incidentally, I went to the McCain rally last Saturday at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds and posted pictures and a report on my blog. The McCain office arranged press credentials for me, so I was able to get up close. I shared some of my pictures with the campaign for whatever use they cold make of them. My impression of McCain was very good, he was energized and very impressive. Take a look at my words-and-pictures report here: [Link: starphoenixbase.com...]

Or maybe they get upset at one whiner's constant equivocation between a donation from one organization to another, and a personal relationship that spanned a number of years.

But I would say they're merely annoyed at the obtuseness of that argument.

I think that is a good idea, especially if McCain wins as we hope and expect that he does. I cannot imagine what Chicago is in for, with perhaps a million or two Obama supporters gathered in Grand Park to celebrate. Last time I remember a Chicago celebration was right after MLK was killed, and the citizenry celebrated all night. I also remember the celebrations right there in Grant Park during the 1968 Dem convention. One of my coworkers has spent the day pointing out the McCain at some point had given Khalidi money in the 90's for some project or something. Does anyone know what he is talking about?

McCain was the chairman of an organization that gave grants to many people and organizations, and one of them was a group started by Khalidi. Chances are pretty good that he didn't even know anything about the Khalidi operation; I doubt he personally oversaw every single grant that went out.

On the other hand, Barack Obama was a close, personal friend of Rashid Khalidi, who had dinner at his house many times, attended parties for him, etc.

The relationships are not even close to being equivalent.

I know, but this guy rigged the voltage supply to his sign, not all the wireless stuff. My point is, this kind of valtage is the same as a Tesla coil or a VanDegraph generator, high voltage, low amperage. Because of the low amperage, the voltage doesn't have the "umph" needed to interrupt the heart etc.

But...

The unexpected suddenness of getting shocked, in itself, can cause problems. Even though this guy was loosing his McCain signs, he should not have done this.

I'm surprised the sherrif let this ride.

Any maybe, if we think about it, Charles should have his software issue random numbers instead of names. In this way, we would not be tempted to create "cute" screen names, and it would discourage anyone from making fun of another Lizard, just because their screen name sounded odd or funny.

Any thoughts Charles?

Interesting. The guy on my one shoulder says, veiled gov't 1st Amendment suppression. The guy on my other shoulder says, maybe the cop was genuinely concerned for you. The other guy on my other shoulder says, perhaps the cop is expecting an exceptional workload in the next few days, and is doing what he/she can to minimize pre-emptively a possible event. Within two weeks of his purchase of the biotech stock that Feb. 22, Mr. Obama initiated what he has called “one of my top priorities since arriving in the Senate,” a push to increase federal financing to fight avian flu

His first step came on March 4, 2005, when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved his request for $25 million to help contain the disease in Asia; the full Senate later approved that measure. And in April 2005, he introduced a bill calling for more research on avian flu drugs and urging the government to increase its stockpiles of antiviral medicines

Mr. Obama repeated this call in a letter that Aug. 9 to Michael O. Levitt, the health and human services secretary. And in September 2005, Mr. Obama and Senator Tom Harkin, Democrat of Iowa, succeeded in amending another bill to provide $3.8 billion for battling the flu

Lou Dobbs discussed this yesterday on his program. McCain was the Chairman of a group called "International Republican Institute." The Institute was founded (one of the original founders was Ed Rollins, a Huckabee supporter and who does everything possible to denigrate the McCain campaign) to encourage tyrannies to develop democratic principles around the globe. Back in the 1990s the "International Republican Institute" gave monies to the "Center for Palestinian Research and Studies". The Center for Palestinian Research and Studies was founded by Khalidi. This Center would conduct surveys and do public opinion polls in the West Bank and Gaza...Now that's hardly the same sort of relationship which existed between Khalidi and Obama. Obama told a group of Jewish voters that Obama considered Khalidi "a friend." Again, Khalidi is Obama's friend and vice versa.

Stern told me that he was sent photocopies of a few pages from the testimonial book at the time that he was writing opinion pieces criticizing Columbia University for hiring Khalidi. He said he no longer has the photocopies.

I went Tuesday and was just horrified at one part of state law: here in MN, voters can register on the day of the election, either with state-issued ID, or federally-issued ID and a local utility bill, or by having a voter in their precinct vouch that they live in that precinct and are a US citizen. One voter can vouch for 15 new voters. An employer can vouch for an unlimited number of employees. This seems like a big ol' gaping loophole to me.

I'm surprised Rashid Khalidi's relationship with Yasser Arafat would be denied by an Obama supporter. Surely they'd want to promote that fact? "Obama's good friends with the spokesperson of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize" surely sounds better than "It's a lie!". Of course, any award that counts, among its recipients, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, and Nelson Mandela (leader of the Umkhonto we Sizwe) may not be an award to aspire to, but still... it does sound better.

I'm an election judge myself. Have you been to training yet? I went Tuesday and was just horrified at one part of state law: here in MN, voters can register on the day of the election, either with state-issued ID, or federally-issued ID and a local utility bill, or by having a voter in their precinct vouch that they live in that precinct and are a US citizen. One voter can vouch for 15 new voters. An employer can vouch for an unlimited number of employees. This seems like a big ol' gaping loophole to me.

We have the exact same law. Same day register and vote. You need less than nothing. "Joe here? SURE - he lives just down the block from me!"

good enough

I plan on memorizing the hot line number

Even Fox News has now completely forgotten about the LA Times video.

That excuse that they're "protecting their source" seems to have been the magic formula to get the rest of the media off their back.

If its true, then protecting your scources is standard procedure. Journalists have gone to jail on contempt of court charges for protecting their scource in criminal trials. The fact that they released the story is a victory for journalistic ethics. But I suspect there is more than one copy of this event, and it would be nice if Fox would give a reward of a hundred grand to produce an authantic video....

I work the polls. We had a pollwatcher who showed up and tried to sit at the election tables, which was a no no. The thing that kind of bothered me was that he didn't have any paperwork saying who he was. I gave him the guide to pollwatchers for him to read and had him get comfortable across the room. He ended up being a really nice young man, even cleaned up some spilled water. Just introduce yourself, chat with them when you can, etc., to put them at ease.

Everything about everyone that BHO is associated literally screams that he is himself deeply associated with and shares the same intent to take the United States of American DOWN--to destroy this nation. That's the first step. Remaking it in a marxist mold comes after.

The really appalling thing is that except for people like us, few in this country give a damn about Khalidi or about terrorism in general. If you were to cite chapter and verse about Khalidi's career to the average voter, they would just look at you with a felled cow expression, and say, "so what? I mean some guy over in Beirut that Obama went to dinner with, I mean big deal." Believe me, I have tried. I recently got into a yelling match political discussion with a(n ex) friend about terrorism in the Middle East, and was told by her that terrorism wasn't that much of a problem, and it was mostly invented by speechwriters of the Hellish Bush, who was getting Americans killed in Iraq.

re: #404 spypeach

My 14 year old daughter has a friend whose dad doesn't usually vote. But this year his daughter loves Obama so much that she begged him to vote for Obama just for her, and he's doing it. Unbelievable.

He's too stupid to breed.

My 14 year old told me this week that they are having a mock election at his school on Tuesday and that he says he'll have to go with Obama so he doesn't upset his friends. It's the age. He is perfectly aware that we are for McCain/Palin and why. My hubby is not happy with the school for having the mock election. He thinks our son is too young to know what he wants in something as complicated politics, let alone the nuttiness of this election.

Get out.

If that was an effigy of Pelosi, the MSM would be screaming and calling judges to get these people arrested and locked up.

The article said the girly-man got a visit from the Secret Service, who determined he was not a threat. Well, unless he tried to hit Sarah with his purse. I mean shoulder bag.

From the L.A.T. protest thread: How representative are the pictures of the L.A.T. protest? Why is there not a single sign with a message like: "What did Obama say about Israel?" or "Won't the tapes show Obama protesting the Israel bashing?" or "Is Barack afraid that Jews might see the tape?" You get the idea. The protesters did not. God bless them for showing up, but they sure buried the lead.

"D" batteries can make a potent weapon if need be. Just ask Phillies fans./

Mama having worked many elections, stay back from the poll workers and allow them to do their jobs without inteference, plus take the time to meet the other poll watchers, yes they may be Obama supporters but they want a fair election just like you, and they have some insite as to what is going on. If you are observing the election count stay well back like thirty feet, the workers are under a fair amount of pressure and doing their best. Observe and if you see irregularities do not intefere but report as instructed. I will probably be working this election. And I expect it to last till 2 or 3 with the long voter lines delaying the counts for three hours so we will start seriously counting at 10:30 rather than the usual 7:30....Good luck mate!

And no, I have never, nor will I ever, toss anything onto a playing surface or race track. Pure stupidity if you ask me, slows the action and someone might get hurt for real...not a good thing.
