McCarthy: The Los Angeles Times's Strange Notion of Journalistic Ethics

Media | Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 10:52:01 am PDT

Another article by Andrew C. McCarthy on the outrageous journalistic malpractice of the Los Angeles Times: The Los Angeles Times’s Strange Notion of Journalistic Ethics.

Even if you accept for argument’s sake the bunk about honoring the “source’s” supposed wishes, the newspaper wouldn’t need to release the tape in order to give us a more comprehensive account of what happened that evening. So it’s not that the Times is simply withholding the tape. The Times is trying to suppress the story. Not the story as Wallsten spun it back in April. The full story.

The full story couldn’t be more relevant. Barack Obama says he is a staunch supporter of Israel. The importance of the Khalidi festivities isn’t simply that Obama lavished praise on a man who was an Arafat apologist — although that is troubling in itself. What also matters is that many speakers (no doubt including Obama’s good friend Khalidi himself) said extremely provocative things about Israel and American policy.

While that went on, Obama apparently sat there in tacit acceptance, if not approval. He didn’t get up to leave. He wasn’t roused to a defense of his country. He didn’t deliver a spirited condemnation of Islamic terror. He just sat there. And when it came his turn to speak, he spoke ... glowingly ... about Khalidi. He was clearly comfortable around the agitators and, equally crucial, they were clearly comfortable spewing their bile in front of him — confident that they were certainly not giving offense.

Why would the Times think it’s not newsworthy to tell us in detail what Obama sat through and chose not to refute? He says he supports Israel, but shouldn’t we get a peek at what he actually does when Israel is under attack? After all, he wants to be in charge and soon the attacks may be more than just verbal.

All of that could be made known by the publication of a transcript, without breaching any purported promise to the purported source.

But, the Times sputters, we’ve already done that news story back in April. The material facts have already been publicized thanks to our crack reporting.

Really?

I don't think this has anything to do with a promise to a source. There is something damning on that tape- very damning. So damning, that even a transcript would be devastating to 0bama. They haven't chosen journalistic integrity- they've chosen ideological stonewalling.

OK - gonna ask this question again - how do we actually know that this video tape exists? The LATimes said it had a copy of the videotape to buttress it's story back in April.
So how do we know it exists? Is it possible that the LA Times said they had it when the story was written but didn't really have it? Would the LA Times lie about such a thing?

24 Fluffster  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 10:59:47am

Wait, didn't the wapo editorial inform us in their defense of the LAT "Our sense is that Mr. Obama is a man of considerable intellectual curiosity who can hear out a smart, if militant, advocate for the Palestinians without compromising his own position."

In other words it's ok for Obama to associate with a Hamas sympathizer / supporter and militant if you are smart and curious. Does not compute ...

Should it surprise anyone that the LAT is busy trying to bury the story, and claim that they reported all the details based on their initial story, which only referenced this in passing? It's a time-honed tactic of claiming that due diligence was done while avoiding doing any real work to dig up details.

No wonder papers and other media outlets are suffering bigtime.

Can you say 86% drop in revenues?
The WaPo certainly can. And you can't blame it all on the economy, though they certainly will try. It only adds to the bitterness factor at the media outlets.

I hope I 'linked' this the right way . . . . ,
"There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history in America, as an independent press You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dare to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the street looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my' paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities, and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.

-John Swinton, former chief of staff, The New York Times, in a 1953 speech before the New York Press Club

If they don't release this prior, wonder what happens November 5th? The One loses and LA Times releases with an article screaming "Oh thank goodness you voted correctly! We had to trust the American people and they didn't let us down, here is why (ROLL TAPE OF OBAMA BASHING JEWS!)" or he wins and "HAHA! Look what you people did! Look what we in the Media can do! Oh the Power! Go Palestine! (ROLL TAPE OF OBAMA BASHING JEWS!)"

35 RaiderDan  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 11:03:18am

Maybe somebody enterprising could come up with the LA Times editorials from 1974 when Richard Nixon was stonewalling Congress for the Watergate tapes?

Bottom line, I wonder what those 75 editorial staffers who carried out their boxes from the building for the last time are thinking. Your paper sacrificed your jobs and your families to ensure Barack Obama's election.

Liberal values indeed. More like Stalinist.

All for the Greater Good.

Washington Post profits were down 86% in the last quarter. Being in the tank for Barack Obama isn't good for shareholders. Maybe one day they'll call 'em on it.

Following are excerpts from an email Norm Coleman just sent out, dealing with nasty personal attacks from Angry Al Franken.

A few weeks ago I took down my negative ads to put a more positive focus on the issues of the day. That approach has been emphatically rejected by Mr. Franken. If Minnesotans want to know what kind of Senator Al Franken would be - watch his campaign this last week - see how he has attacked my family - my wife - and my reputation.

And, my message to him - to his political allies - and anyone else who intends to attack my wife, and my family, in the remaining days of this campaign is this: get out of the gutter.

My wife has been devastated by this. She turns on her computer and reads on the blogs the most vicious attacks, impugning her integrity and trying to destroy her ability to do her job. She's angry-- and she has a right to be -- and so am I.

This is the kind of 11th hour, sleazy attack the people of Minnesota are sick and tired of. This is not the Minnesota way and I know the people of Minnesota. This will backfire.

If my opponents have any shred of decency left in this campaign - stop attacking my family."

The Facts: A Bogus Lawsuit in the Final Days of a Campaign

This political attack and story began last week with an unsigned, anonymous envelope that was sent to two Star Tribune reporters containing false and baseless allegations against Norm and Laurie Coleman;

I guess our best evidence that the tape exists is the cover-up that is now going on. If no tape existed, then there would be no need of a cover-up, and all the negative publicity that is associated with it.

Now, it is possible that the tape has been destroyed, and the Times doesn't want to admit to destroying it. Either way, it's the cover-up that's killing them.

It took place in 2003 ... a time when conscientious American were probably checking thoroughly if their associates were standing with America, after 9/11.

OT:
Someone else isn't going to prison. Al Qaeda terrorist, who US considered a top threat (and #4 overall in the terror organization) and plotter for an upcoming major attack, died from heartbreak of never having cast an absentee ballot for Obama and Hellfire missiles, but mostly Hellfire missiles.

The official says the U.S. now has evidence that Khalid Habib was killed in an unmanned air strike two weeks ago in the South Waziristan region of Pakistan. Until now, there had been no official confirmation of reports of Habib's death from local militants in the area.

"He was the person responsible for planning and organizing attacks in the Pakistan and overseas, including the U.S.," the senior official said. "This was a really big deal that has not received much attention."

Considered the number four leader of al Qaeda, Habib was a long-time associate close to both Osama bin Laden and Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri.

I think this could get Ace's patented flaming skull...

If I recall, the song doesn't suggest that the narrator is serving time for that particular crime. It just mentions it by the way.

But no other crime is mentioned. He seems to "hang his head and cry" about his mistake in Reno -- and he's crying because it landed him in jail.

Cash was from back east. He probably didn't know much about the details of the western states and the prison systems.

LAT is clearly taking a page from the H. Asad (Syria) rule book - get power and keep it by any means.

There's no doubt that the tape will eventually surface and as is the case with all cover-ups, the mess will be worse then.

But, Barry Hussein (according to all the pundits estimates prior to the citizen actually voting on Tues) will be Pres. and that's the only thing that counts.

Hubris.

Lst time the LA Times got into this type of controversy they lost 10,000 subscriptions over a 3 day period.
And most important of all, a couple car agencies. A newspaper cannot afford to lose 3 groups of advertisers, cars, food including the Yummy group in particular, and real estate. Even the lost of a single client is devastating.

A truly stupid ad for the RNC to run in the last week of this hugely important election.
Stooges
Honestly, is that the best they can do? How about some fricken' issues?

That's what I've been saying. They should talk about the laws that Barry-Pelosi will pass. The judges. How about Catholic hospitals forced to perform elective abortions through the entire 9 mos of pregnency? Eliminating hte statute of limitations on employment lawsuits. No longer having blind justice, but instead rulings will be based on skin color. Obama has promised these things.

I guess an argument for that is if you were there and saw yourself in the video, you'd just have to ask yourself "who didn't I see in the video" and that's the person filming. However, to counter that, that doesn't necessarily mean that that's the person who gave it to the LA Slimes.

Ah forget it - I was just honestly curious that the LA Times said it had a copy of the video tape last April and since then, as Charles has documented, have come up with reason after reason - all different - as to why they won't/can't release it.

Occam's razor, realwest. They won't release it because it would be really bad for 0bama.

If they don't have it, or never had it, they could lie and say they sent it back to the source after viewing. Why they would lie makes no sense here.

90 pat  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 11:16:13am

91 Buck  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 11:16:27am

OBAMA, knowing there are witnesses, and a tape that might still come out (perhaps even after the election), needs to be ASKED the direct question. Did you say that Israel had no religious right to exist?

Basically setting up a perjury trap.

I think OBAMA is too smart to fall for it, and his lack of an direct answer will be the answer.

He will not fall into the "I did not have sex with that woman" trap.

Here's another little twist that just occurred to me:

they had the tape - said they can't publish for 'confidentiality reasons' - and by now someone from the B0 campaign has shown them conclusively that it will be 'safer' in said campaign safes.
Money and lots of heavy arm-twisting here ... so they hand the tape over ...

And now they cannot possibly say that they handed the tape to the B0 campaign.

What we need to come to grips with is that maybe that's where America is.

What we have here is a situation similar to a public prosecutor deliberately hiding exculpatory evidence in a felony trial.

But instead of an innocent defendant being wrongfully convicted of a serious crime we will have our nation (and the world in general) subjected to the whims of an individual who is clearly unfit to hold elective office as a result of this malfeasance. If PA goes McCain's way, it pretty much means that Obama's got a huge uphill climb because if McCain can hold nearly all the Bush states from 2004, he wins handily.

Obama has to fight in states that Bush won in 2004 because Bush became President carrying those states. The big thing that the media keeps missing is that McCain simply needs to hold states Bush had. If he grabs additional states, or states that have larger EVs than some of those Bush held, he can afford to lose a state like CO, because it would be a net win for him.

LA Times pretty much porked the puppy on this one. That tape could have been the most boring, innocuous recording ever made, but their stonewalling has made it the center of attention and the stuff future conspiracies are made of.

Even if after the election they produced a tape there would always be doubt it was a complete, unedited video. More than likely they will produce something on DVD citing the need for storage because VHS is unstable after five years. But, it would never be trusted.

In August I had a miserable experience attempting to get information from Vital Statistics in California. I was put through a byzantine phone tree that wasted 15 minutes of my time, the recorded voice reciting address after address to which to write, when I was only interesting in speaking to a live agent. When I finally had the opportunity to be put into the que for a live rep - it connected me but only to get a loud obnoxious busy signal. I would have to hang up and try again.

I was mad. I wrote to the Office of Gov. Arnold Schwartenegger - and after 3 months received this reply: (undoubtedly a form letter but it does sound like his syntax).

Thank you for sharing with me your experience with the Office of Vital Records. It is only through open communication that we can continue to make government and agencies more efficient and helpful to the people of California.

My administration has taken necessary steps to make California government more responsive and accountable to the people it serves. I have appointed Agency Secretaries who share my goal of providing the very best services possible while cutting the "bureaucratic red tape" that stifles creative and efficient solutions to meet the needs of Californians. The leaders of these governmental bureaus, departments and agencies are held accountable not only by my office but by the people of California whom these leaders serve. Having read your unsuccessful experience, I am reminded that there is still much more reform needed to establish confidence between you and our governmental agencies. I am committed to this goal and will continue to set quality service as a priority for my administration and agencies to follow.

Again, thank you for sharing your experience with me. Working together, we can implement additional reforms to strengthen the services the state provides for all Californians.

Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger

It called for the firing of a local Republican, Scott Garrett, for his ties to the financial crisis. I saw that and thought, you could use the very same argument to claim to never want to hire Obama or Biden for the very same reasons.

It is typical for a politician to promise the moon, and then deliver less. So the fact that Obama is making specific plans to lower the expectations of his voters tells me that his "less" will be far worse than is normal. Enough to, in their own words, cause dispair.

It reminded me of Biden's words about the next international crisis when "it won't look like what we are doing is right" at first so Americans will just have to bear with Obama.

Already covering for the future when their policies create failure.

And yes, that reminded me of the five-year-plans of the USSR and China, which sold the idea of very temporary sacrifice for a utopian future, only to be followed by another five-year-plan, and another, and another.

"Don't believe for a second this election is over. Don't think for a minute that power concedes anything. It's gonna get nasty, I'm sure, in the next four days," Obama told a crowd in Columbia, Missouri, on Thursday night.

Nah. Just a private company carrying out a private function; their loyalty is -- or should be -- to their readership. To their paying subscribers. And that's the best way to pressure them into behaving rightly -- assuming they don't really have some deal in place with their source, in which case they would be behaving rightly, even if it's frustrating -- is to hit them by canceling subscriptions. Every company likes corporation needs money.

I agree, in general, that the way to "get to" the LAT is via advertisers and/or subscribers.

As to the bit about having a deal with the source, their story about this simply isn't congruous with their actions.

The LAT says they promised to protect the source by not releasing the tape. This, of course, begs the question of just WHY the source feels the need for "protection" here.

But assuming for the moment that this cock-and-bull story were true, The LAT can report on the contents of this tape (eg by releasing a transcript) without compromising the source in any way. They could even redact the transcript to further protect the source, if necessary.

So their story isn't true.

Perhaps the LAT thinks the best way to preserve its readership is by NOT saying bad things about Obama. Perhaps it thinks the best way to protect ITSELF (if only to protect future access) is to NOT say bad things about Obama. Or perhaps a simple bribe has caused this bout of conscience.

What I don't understand is how the division between news and advertising -- and that's what was being discussed -- has to do with the LA Times's situation.

Ok, admitting that I have only their stock info to go on, and their recent movements of staff to the unemployment numbers, I am viewing the actions of that paper as highly suspect.

Are they flitering the news becaise their ads are bought and paid for by supporters? No clue, and I am not one to see corruption everywhere, but this stinks.

Ads exist to support the news as a mechanism, not as a driving force behind what does and doesn't get released, and I am not sure if that is the reason why this paper is acting is this way.

My uncle was a newspaper writer, and the goal, the name of the game, was to get the "scoop" and beat the other papers to the story, and THAT was what sold your paper, with ads being an added bonus.

With the infusion of ad dollars, in light of falling revenue and subscriptions, I am concerned that the news is or is not printed to keep advertisers happy, not to get the scoop.

Their ultimate loyalty is to the stock holders.

One thing about the newspaper industry, they have a high degree of what is called operational leverage. That is, once you've made the investment in printing presses, a reporting staff, and a distribution system, the revenue from additional subscribers (or advertisers) is almost pure profit. OTOH, the converse is also true, each lost subscriber (or advertiser) is that much of a drag on the bottom line. This is why newspaper earnings are falling so fast as circulation declines. Loss of even a small fraction of their subscriber hits the bottom line real hard. Plus the fact that ad revenues are usually based on circulation. A real double whammy. So, pissing off your conservative subscribers is really shooting yourself in the foot. This goes double for the TV and radio industry.

What has Obama done that's comparable? Walked the slums of Chicago that liberals helpred create?

Marxist theory is that you want to increase the misery of the Proletariat to the point that violent Revolution looks like a viable option. Then you (as part of the Revolutionary vanguard) ride the Unrest into Power.

Then you put down the insurrection and establish the Marxist Revolutionary Dictatorship of the Proletariat. Civil unrest has always been part of the Marxist pantheon. Some variants of Marxism call for radical trade-unionism, and a general strike to bring down the State. The methods vary, but the goal is the same: increase the misery of the average citizen to the point where they will accept violent revolution as the lesser of the evils they are facing.

Okay, here's a play to all those moderate middle folks who may be undecided.

In 2000, we had a choice between Bush and Gore. Bush was considered the inexperienced novice compared with Gore. Bush won. Everyone on the left frothed about his inexperience and stupidity and all the rest.

Eight years later, we're now listening to the same left claim that Obama's inexperience doesn't matter and that he will make mistakes (big ones too!), but they'll be different mistakes. Thanks Joe Biden for pointing that out repeatedly.

Right. Why are we taking a chance on making a huge mistake in the polar opposite direction from Bush? Who needs to take that kind of chance with our nation's future?

I can't help but wonder if this is part of Obama's "I'm not going to be able to do everything I hoped." He had hoped he could give everyone below 250K a tax cut. By the time he gets into the office, the only ones getting a tax cut will be those that don't pay taxes.

Something else you won't read about in the LAT

As of today, Friday 10/31, the County of Los Angeles had not delivered ballots for the veterans hospitalized at the VA facility on Wilshire Boulevard.

Sources at the hospital report that usually such ballots are readily available, but the county is claiming to be 12,000 ballots short and none have been sent over.

If ballots are not delivered, the patients and residents of the facility have only two options: to send a proxy with a signed authorization down to the Registrar's office in Norwalk to pick up a ballot, or to somehow check out of the hospital, make their way to their registered polling place, and then make their way back to the hospital for readmittance.

This is an absolute scandal that this matter has not been addressed four days (two working) before the election.

If the stories are no good, no one will buy the paper. If the ads don't pay the bills, no one will write the stories.

The newspaper business is an eyeball delivery racket. The currency used is CPM. "Cost Per Thousand" in circulation (eyeballs).

I agree. If Obama was a moderate, we would have seen some evidence of such moderation at some point in his life. Not so. The article I linked to was from a sincere, if seriously deluded, liberal. I found it interesting because he is at least beginning to notice a disconnect between the moderate Obama campaign image and Obama's leftist record.

Many moderate or centrist Democrats are going to have a real bad morning after hangover.

Obama is definitly no economic moderate. He's a Marxist. The folks who are thinking that he will govern as a moderate are - like Dinner Jacket - betting on the fact that Obama's also a milquetoast. They will force moderate policies on him.

.....I hope we don't have to find out.

Spread the word, and ream Los Angeles a new one.

thats a flippin travesty. I will mention that none of the guys in my sweetie's unit have absentee ballots, and even if they got them, the ballots wont get back to the USA from iraq in time for them to be counted. These dudes are on a high simmer of rage for being disenfranchised, but do their duty anyway, accepting their right to vote is something that just doesnt apply, mostly because there are democrats that are blocking them from having their most baisic right applied to them.
Its really sad.
He asks: "Please dont talk politics with me. Since i cant vote, it just hurts too much."
I think thats unbearably sad.

544 korla pundit  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 1:02:28pm

This is what Biden was talking about with his "international crisis" to which Obama's response might not be too popular. This Jew-hater has given his muslim friends in Iran and Syria and Hezbollah the green light to attack Israel as soon as he's the U.S. Commander in Chief, and he won't come to Israel's aid. No more defensive missiles. No more weapon systems. No intelligene aid. No help whatsoever.

A lot of people who are stupidly voting for this commie creep are suddenly going to be outraged and confused, as Israel is left to the wolves. Wolves with nukes, perhaps. Of course, Israel's nukes aren't going to bring good news either when they retaliate. That's why Biden is forewarning his supporters that they're going to have to buck up and support a very unsupportable response to this coming crisis.

A manufactured crisis indeed. Manufactured by Obama, his Marxist friends, and his Iranian and Syrian supporters.

This is where we don't need to see a filibuster-proof Dem majority in Congress for a Barack Presidency to lead to utter disaster.

This is just not true. McCain has explained Obama's tax plan on his Web site and in his stump speeches. The issue isn't McCain not explaining things. The issue is the MSM not amplifying what McCain says, while providing a megaphone for Obama.

He's talked about Obama voting last year to raise taxes on people making as little as $42k. However, nobody has gone into detail about what the expiration of the Bush tax cuts (lower rates across the board), are going to do to the middle class. I saw some analysis (sorry, no link) that indicated that a married couple with an income of $80k would see a $3k increase in their Federal Income Tax. $80k is two school teachers! Assuming I'm correct about what I read, this should have been used to beat Obama about the head and shoulders.

It is ...... fascinating to examine the degree to which members of the news media have supported Democrat or liberal/Left candidates and causes, both at the ballot box and with their checkbooks:

* In 1964, 94 percent of media professionals voted for Democrat Lyndon Johnson over Republican Barry Goldwater
* In 1968, 86 percent voted for Democrat Hubert Humphrey over Republican Richard Nixon.
* In 1972, 81 percent voted for Democrat George McGovern over the incumbent Nixon.
* In 1976, 81 percent voted for Democrat Jimmy Carter over Republican Gerald Ford.
* In 1980, twice as many cast their ballots for Carter rather than Republican Ronald Reagan.
* In 1984, 58 percent supported Democrat Walter Mondale, whom Reagan defeated in the biggest landslide in presidential election history.
* In 1988, White House correspondents from various major newspapers, television networks, magazines, and news services supported Democrat Michael Dukakis over Republican George H.W. Bush by a ratio of 12-to-1.
* In 1992, those same correspondents supported Democrat Bill Clinton over the incumbent Bush by a ratio of 9 to 2.
* Among Washington bureau chiefs and congressional correspondents, the disparity was 89 percent vs. 7 percent, in Clinton’s favor.
* All told, White House correspondents during the late ’80s and early ’90s voted for Democrats at 7 times the rate at which they voted for Republicans.
* In a 2004, poll of campaign journalists, those based outside of Washington, D.C., supported Democrat John Kerry over Republican George W. Bush by a ratio of 3-to-1. Those based inside the Beltway favored Kerry by a 12-to-1 ratio.
* In a 2004 nationwide poll of 300 newspaper and television journalists, 52 percent supported Kerry, while 19 percent supported Bush.
* In a 2008 survey of 144 journalists nationwide, journalists were 8 times likelier to make campaign contributions to Democrats than to Republicans.
* A 2008 Investors Business Daily study put the campaign donation ratio at 11.5-to-1, in favor of Democrats. In terms of total dollars given, the ratio was 15-to-1.

The LA Times has shown complete disregard for national security in the past by publishing classified material leaked by CIA sources, a violation of the law and poor judgement. Now they take an ethical stand on making public a video given to them by somebody with an agenda? They don't need to release the guy's name or even the video (they could just release a transcript) and still have honored their agreement. I only hope one of the 75 people who got pink slips from the Times has a copy of the tape and leaks it to another newspaper.
