A Message from Fred Thompson

Politics | Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 12:35:13 pm PDT

During the primary race, Fred Thompson often seemed distracted, as if his heart wasn’t really in it. But this message to voters hits several marks, and hits them dead center. Where was this Fred during his campaign?

hi fred

2 Ringo the Gringo  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:37:13pm

You tell 'em Fred!

3 vapig  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:38:19pm

Right! THAT was the guy I wanted for president.

4 Ringo the Gringo  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:38:54pm

I still have my Thompson '08 bumper-sticker.

Never had the chance to put it on my car because it arrived in the mail the day after he dropped out.

5 midwestgak  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:39:12pm

It wasn't Fred's time, it seems, to be president. Hope he is in McCain's cabinet.

6 zombie  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:39:37pm

I still don't really now who this guy is.

7 OldLineTexan  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:39:38pm

Don't ask me where Fred was. I'm still trying to find Duncan Hunter.

8 zombie  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:40:00pm

I still don't really now who this guy is = I still don't really know who this guy is.

9 CyanSnowHawk  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:40:16pm

I think Fred realized that he really didn't want the job, and didn't want to just say, "Sorry, I was only kidding folks."

10 Killian Bundy  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:40:16pm

Asshole on Fox, whining about Palin.

/says Huckabee would have been better, *chortle*

11 SFGoth  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:40:47pm

I get the feeling that he was pressured into running. McCain has a way deeper cabinet bench.

re: #6 zombie

I still don't really now who this guy is.

He write's conservative articles about the issues. More of a federalist type.

13 jill e  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:41:02pm

I really don't think Fred was well during the primaries (wasn't he fighting leukemia?). Look at his face in this video—he looks less haggard and like he's gained back weight.

14 arethusa  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:42:16pm

Fred has been a much better non-candidate than a candidate. His speech at the convention was great, as is this video.

And his wife does Team Sarah! Here's their latest ad - it's about Obama winking at folks like Ayers.

15 joncelli  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:42:21pm

I think Fred's problem during the primaries was that he thought about the tradeoffs of being president: "Hmm. I can have a job that ages strong men 20 years in the space of 8, I can suffer abuse from all sides, and I can be the target of constant plots on my life; or, I can avoid the hassle and be an actor and play slap and tickle with my hot young wife all the live-long day. Hmmm."

Don't ask me where Fred was. I'm still trying to find Duncan Hunter.

Duncan Hunter is out actively campaigning for his son, a Marine veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who is running for Hunter's seat, and travelling the country campaigning for other Republican congressional candidates.

There is more than one front in this war.

Duncan Hunter is a true statesman. If only he was better known.

20 Pullus Iulius  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:44:38pm

Fred's a man. Not a mannequin, like the thing that a certain party nominated.

21 Land Shark  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:44:52pm

I was all set to vote for Fred in the Florida primary but he dropped out before it happened. He really did seem like his heart wasn't in it. He probably has way too much common sense to subject himself to that media anal exam they give presidential candidates.

An awesome video though. Lays out the situation clearly without hyperbole.

Don't let the skewed Obamedia polls keep you down. GET OUT AND VOTE FOR McCAIN / PALIN ON NOV. 4!

re: #8 zombie

I still don't really now who this guy is = I still don't really know who this guy is.

Here is his Wiki page.

Fred Dalton Thompson (born Freddie Dalton Thompson on August 19, 1942) is an American politician, actor, attorney, and lobbyist. He represented Tennessee as a Republican in the U.S. Senate from 1994 through 2002.

He looked like he would be an excellent candidate, but his lackluster campaigning pushed him to the back of the pack faster than Ron Paul's kookiness.

Fred for SOS.

Rudy for DHS.

Mitt for Sec. Treasury.

Hunter for Sec. of Defense.

Paul for Sec. of Education, with the specific task of dismantling it.

Forbes to head IRS, with specific task of implementing flat tax (and cleaning house).

Tancredo to head up ICE.

Cornyn (R-Texas) for AG.

Edith Jones (5th Cir. C of A) for JP Stevens seat on the USSC.
Richard Posner for the seat after that.
Neither one of them is spring chickens, but wow, they're good.

Them's my picks for high-level staff positions.

[Zombie, you don't also go by the nic Grizzly, do you?]--

From over at [Link: pumapac.org...] :

Bill Ayers refers to cop killers as “freedom fighters.”
Louis Farrakhan refers to white people as devils.
Jeremiad Wright refers to America as AmeriKKKa.
OBAMA REFERS TO THESE PEOPLE AS FRIENDS.

Nicely succinct. They continue powerfully:

These people, these friends of Bill Ayers, I mean Barack Obama, believe a race war is possible. They FEED on the injustice done to poor and minority people in order to convert them as soldiers. They are evil people. They are feeding on the poor. They salivate at the thought of a race war. What kind of evil person longs for violence? They believe the anger they’ve bred among the poor is a powder keg that could explode in a revolution.

AND BARACK OBAMA IS HOLDING THE MATCH.

Do not vote for Barack Obama. Do not let your friends or your family vote for him. Do everything you can to get this message out.

62 Walter L. Newton  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:55:29pm

Ok, I'm going to get a big "eeyore" from everybody here, but my question in response to Charles' question is...

Where was anyone during this campaign, from the candidate, to other Republicans down to one of the lowliest media hacks in the campaign?

We've seen two major things over the last year. A media that is som much in the tank for the Dem that it screams it on every front page of every newspaper, web site and TV program on a daily basis, and probably one of the most lackluster campaigns form a Republican in the history of the party.

My 2 cents.

64 yesandno  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 12:56:23pm

Fred was running as he did long ago. The rules had changed and he didn't really recognize that fact fast enough. Also McCain was his good friend and I believe McCain's early success in the primaries changed the landscape for Fred.

There was no reason to select a candidate in January, months before an election. But that is how it now is. Don't think Fred thought he should get involved that early.

In many ways, he was the real adult in the campaign, a bit less willing to go along to get along. He would have made a fine President because he has the temperment and is willing to remain firm on issues.

What he said here...even speaking to the choir as someone said, needs to be said because sometimes the choir thinks they are a solo act in their beliefs.

And it also allows me to e=mail it to everyone on my list and tell them to forward to everyone on their list, etc. It could reach a lot of people, not only the choir.

I would have preferred Fred Thompson over John McCain, but I don't think his chances would have been better in 2008 against Obama. 2008 was going to be a Democrat year. You just can't get around the reality of the economy cooling or stalling or whatever it is doing, the unpopularity of George W. Bush and the fact that he has been in office for two terms. Add discontent about how Iraq was handled and you can't get around it. Oh, and there is also the fact that this really is the Apocalypse, the Seventh Seal is broken, and its time for eight years of pure, delicious crazy.

I agree. Until McCain chose Palin, he was doomed. Even for a while after that, McCain failed to distinguish himself as a political fighter. He waited way too long to take the gloves off, and to court the real conservatives.

If McCain loses, it will be his fault. If he wins, it will be because the alternative media dragged his carcass into the White House in spite of himself.

Fred's point about class stasis in a leftist society is well taken.

Leftists are all about stasis. The biggest NIMBYs in the country--the people who argue against growth, against drilling for oil, against developing resources, against permitting people to add onto whatever they've got--are leftists.

That's cause progress involves Creative Destruction. Leftist like "security," uncertainty frightens them. They would gladly give up liberty for security.

No, I don't agree. If he wins, it will be because Obama scared the willies out of a whole lot of Independents and moderate Democrats, and PUMA's kicked in a little help.

I would perfer it that way. It would help me get back a little faith in the American voters.

Where was this Fred during his campaign?

The problem with Fred, Charles is that even though I believe he is true to his conservative convictions and believes what he says-- you are looking at a rehearsed recording form an actor.

He's not too bad when he is impromptu, but he seems to need time to write and produce these pieces of brilliance.

You'll never quite get the same Fred Fire on the campaign trail.

There were a few regulatory factors that lead us to this problem. In the 90's Clinton repealed a regulation that kept banks from owning other financial institutions (called something like the "smith-Jones act", I can't find the name right now). Another more recently repealed regulation (around 2005) used to restrict speculators short selling financials.

My perception is people looked at how Bush and Co was getting continually raked over the coals for all ills real or imagined, a relatively unpopular war, a lackluster economy, a hostile Dem controlled Congress, hostile press, hostile bureaucracy, etc etc and had difficulty getting ginned up for the buzz-saw of presidential politics. I think its easier for the Dem's to get excited about gaining power versus conservatives getting excited about shrinking government and all that other really hard to do stuff.

Fred Thompson was a client of the talent agency I worked for back in the late 80's. He'd stop by the office quite often, and I remember him being smart as a whip, polite, and genuinely friendly. IIRC, he made it a point to know everyone's name, and to say hi as he came through the office.

I liked him then, and I like him now. Good man.

re: #159 Killgore Trout

This was an interesting Clinton statement:
"For example, today she gave the most detailed position I've seen on what we ought to do on the finance crisis. She said we ought to follow not the Resolution Trust Corp. model for dealing with these homes and commercial properties. We ought to go back to the Home Owners' Loan Corp. that was a product of the Depression. That actually made a profit for the American people by stabilizing a disastrous run on the market for financing homes. She's out there working hard for Senator Obama. But no matter who wins, we've got to shelve the politics for a while and work on the substance.

From another link:
"In the early 1930s, nearly 50 percent of all mortgage loans were in default. In 1933, the Congress established the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation with the following goals: (1) Protect homeowners from foreclosure; (2) Relieve homeowners of the higher interest and principal payments incurred during periods of higher property values and higher earning power; (3) Declare that it was a national policy to protect home ownership; (4) Impose the least possible cost on the federal treasury; and (5) Avoid injustice to the investor.

HOLC, established in 1933, was a temporary corporation which restored liquidity and stability to uncertain mortgage markets. HOLC acquired and refinanced over 1 million troubled mortgage loans—about 20 percent of all mortgage loans in the country. HOLC only rescued current mortgages for three years, 1934-37, stopping a panic among banks and other financial institutions."

You hear that great big sucking sound? That's the government coming after your paycheck. And yes, the middle class is about to get screwed royally with Obama's tax and spend plan.

As most Lizards know here, I'm 55, only gross 1400 a month (down from 80 thou a year, 5 years ago) and after expenses, rarely have over 250-300 for food, gas and a little fun.

So, what will Obama do for me. I DON'T CARE, I DON'T WANT IT. All my lib friends (and as a "starving artist" I know a lot of libs) actually tell me I should be all over Obama becuase he is going to help me.

They tell me the Repubs took my good job from me, made me pay high taxes, won't give me healthcare and so on.

They just can't understand that I'd rather do it for myself. That I get a personal pleasure in working it out. My self worth is worth more than a handout from strangers. That I sleep well at night knowing that I am mostly in control of my future.

Four simple reasons whay I am happy. Four simple reason that causes a lib to slip off into some twilight zone, totally quized to why I would think this way.

Forbes to head IRS, with specific task of implementing flat tax (and cleaning house).

Tancredo to head up ICE.

Cornyn (R-Texas) for AG.

Edith Jones (5th Cir. C of A) for JP Stevens seat on the USSC.
Richard Posner for the seat after that.

re: #107 Ben Hur

The most vicious negative campaign ads ever? Sen. Elizabeth Dole calls opponent Kay Hagan, 'Godless'

Quite the editorial, that headline is.

Think the original ad was questioning why Kay Hagen had a fund raiser outside of N. Carolina, in Boston no less, and to a group of Anti-God people whose whole political platform rests on NO belief in God. Hagen notes she is a practicing Christian, so exactly what is the reason they would be supporting her when their issue is anti religion at the core?

This is part of the "outside" NC money that Chuckie Schumer probably funneled in to the state to topple another Republican....remember, he is head of the Senate elections committee and 23 Rep seats are up and only 10 Dem seats...and most of them safe. So a lot of money is being funneled to states with Rep. Senators.

Hagen's ads are not exactly innocent...but that she thinks she was accused of being Non-Christian is wrong.....she is just being asked what it is that this group sees in Hagan that they want to support her. And that her state and theirs is 800 miles apart.

Me thinks she doth protesteth too much.

Obama is on CNN saying he is going to "cut tax beaks for insurance companies".

Is he saying that he will force insurance companies to raise premiums for ALL Americans?

This is their plan. They will raise taxes on companies and insurance organizations. Then, those companies and insurance organizations will do one of two things (or both).
1) They will increase the cost to the consumer
2) Lay people off

Then, the Obamamessiah comes to the rescue and says "Since these evil companies are increasing prices and laying people off, the government will now supply the goods and services they once did"

That is the entire plan. Make it as hard as possible for the free market to work, then "come to the rescue".

Make no mistake. This is the plan

Speaking of Murtha....what is the latest on his sorry ass? Is he going to lose? THAT would be the best news of Nov 4th (after McCain beats Obama, of course)

Now it's well below "rich person" territory, if two married professionals are paying for a house, kids and college, and saving for retirement.

The latest is he has just asked for a money-bomb... 1 million dollars he is pushing for before the election, so he doesn't lose his senate seat that he's had for 13 terms.

Read an article about it this morning, and the article mentioned all of the GOP money from other states being used to un-seat him, referencing Murtha's recent "racist" comments abotu Western PA. The article mentioned nothing about Haditha, which is what drew national interest in his defeat in the first place.

278 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 1:39:22pm

Some semi-amusing thoughts before the election:

I just got off the phone with an old friend of mine who was very excited about the prospects of a presidency. "You see," he said, "I've lived this way before, and I look forward to it. I remember going with my parents to the parades on May Day late with my little red flag and the tanks rolling down the street. Then turning on the television to see the big nukes rolling down the street in Moscow. They didn't trust Poland with nukes, you had to turn on the TV to see those. The things were huge, like three blocks long. So I will fit right in. You, on the other hand, are going to get a one-way ticket to the reeducation camp."

So I told him about my nightmare the other night in which I was reading a Supreme Court decision delivered by Justice Ayers for Justices Dorhn, Khalidi, Wright, and McKinney. The decision upheld the summary execution without trial of the previous members of the Supreme Court as required under the circumstances and proportionate to their crimes against the people. Justice Farakahn agreed with the sentence but dissented in the ruling in part saying the lower court erred by not torturing the accused first. Trampling an American flag on their way out of the courtroom, the justices made their way down the Potomac River to watch the planned demolition ceremony at the Iwo Jima Memorial to be presided over by First Lady Michelle Obama and Cindy Sheehan. All former members of the Republican congressional delegation were ordered to watch the ceremony wearing gags and handcuffs.

I have a new girlfriend who runs into that, in her case not with family, but with some friends, and they walk all over her.

A long time ago I stopped helping anyone who I reconized as someone who is simply a drag on me. I'll do anything for anyone who really needs a hand, but I will never do it twice if becuase of my help that person abuses me, takes advantage of me or simply makes my life miserable because of the help.

And I don't ask for anything in return. That always helps me personally. I'll give someone something, but the operative word is GIVE. I don't loan someone anything. That only puts you in the position to have some sort of unwritten contract that needs to be fullfilled, and if that contract is broken, hard feelings follow.

Just my opinion. Not as easy to do as it is to write, but I will assure you it works out for the best after a while.

Either someone else will pay it or there will no consequences for NOT paying it.

Patriotic, conservative Americans have been asleep at the wheel.

Because dealing with the school system bureaucracy is like punching a giant marshmallow. Any parent (or group) who tries to accomplish anything gets the old runaround, until they're exhausted and give up. Besides, the local bureaucracy blames the state, the state blames the federal, and the federal blames the locals. You get NOWHERE. Yes, she did fake the voice. The ad ends with a picture of Hagan, and someone saying "There is no God." The very clear implication is that Hagan is saying the words.

I think that is exactly what it comes down to for me. As i've stated before, the Obama tax plan would probably lower my taxes. But, I still am not for them! If I accepted his plan, without contesting it, I would be stealing. I would be stealing from the people who actually made the money I am spending.

If it is acceptable for someone who has less to just take from those that have more, because it would "equalize" their possessions; all stealing and crimes should be legalized. The essence of any crime is to "equalize" the wealth of the two involved parties. A rich man doesn't steal from a poor person, its is always the other way around.

The fact that American's today believe that this type of behavior is acceptable is a bigger disappointment than really anything else.

Yeah, Obama has always bowed to the real power-brokers and been a front man. I go back and forth in my mind when I try to figure on how an Obama administration will govern. If the administration goes hard left (and it might) the ride could get very bumpy, very fast.

Bush hasn't been great. He has been consistent on international issues, but domestically, it's been a mixed bag. The worse thing about Bush, is that because of his inability to think on his feet and defend himself, he opened the door for an Obama.

You, too, could go to Obamaland, went the subtext, just so long as you voted for the man with the “D” next to his name. But in case Americans didn’t realise what was at stake, Obama set out to demonstrate what a God-forsaken, economically devastated shell of a nation they now live in.[Link: www.timesonline.co.uk...]

I didn't watch the infomercial. But man that sounds like a bunch of whiny crap. I'm embarrassed that one lady in it was from Kansas City. And did you catch these comments from Lasalie in the responses:

Yes, the Obama infomercial was depressing and focused on the negative. But you don't realize how people's hope is lost in the US. You don't see the constant, abrasive negative campaigning that McCain is doing, the the nice contrast Obama's weepathon really is. At least Obama is facing the issues.

It is just possible that the majority of Americans supporting Mr Obama are not deluded, nor are they blind, stupid or overly sentimental. They are people disillusioned by the arrogance and ineptness of the current President and by the fear that Mr McCain will do little more than continue the same.

Pathetic.

It is nowhere near as dishonest and inflamatory as the ads the Democrats ran in 2000 where they basically accused Bush of lynching that guy down in Texas. If things are nasty now, the blame for the trend can be laid at the Democrat's door. And that trend goes back longer than I've been alive.

It is impractical to try to be collegial with the Democrats when they are spewing the worst kind of vitriol. It goes against human nature, and worse, it loses elections.

You have to win in order to govern. If the race gets down in the mud, you have to give back as much as you are getting. Or you will just be ran over.

They have built Obama up so much that the average uninformed person believes he cannot lose. When he does everyone will be shocked and horrified (part truth, part media hype). According to the media, typical whiteys and rednecks will still dominate America.

You really think? I don't know...I think Obama will win.

The good news is, it doesn't look like Obama will win FL.

They just can't understand that I'd rather do it for myself. That I get a personal pleasure in working it out. My self worth is worth more than a handout from strangers. That I sleep well at night knowing that I am mostly in control of my future.

Walter, I can understand because I lived it as well. When I was planning for starting my business, a friend's dad offered me $300k start-up funds simply because he despised the only game in town that I was about to take on. The offer was tempting but I decided that I needed to do it on my own if I was ever to have pride in my endeavor. I thanked him for his offer and proceeded to borrow 6k from the bank using my house for collateral.

The time was May, 1982 and I had two children with one on the way. Scary times indeed but I believed in myself and the weight of my responsibilities fueled my energy to "make it happen".

Today, my business is doing just fine. It may be small (just 5 of us) but I did it without help from anyone. Hang in there Walter, I had many tough times thru the years but persistence for something worth-while prevails. I am witness to it. Break a leg!

It's just plain wrong to couch it the way so many bloggers are. I'll be as transparent as possible, but I'm in this mortgage business and have employed 40+ families for several years. I hear the heartache daily and hear the people who honestly believe right now that their whole lives will turn around financially once Obama is elected. I bite my tongue and just encourage them to make their mortgage payments as we loaned them the money. It's disheartening when people on the internet try to turn what they're saying into something it's not.

Honest - there are people out there who have drunk the koolaid and you'd be surprised how many of them feel because the media keeps telling them they are victims. They truly believe it - I can't change their minds.

Should McCain win and I pray we will for DARN sure - I just hope we won't be a bunch of gloaters (except to the MSM and Terrorists and Jew Haters) and blow the opportunity of a lifetime to get things turned around.

I'll probably get a gazillion down dings but right is right. We at least need to be powerful and gracious all in one.

I had to terminate 7 employees this week - never had to do that in 15 years in this business. Try doing that face to face. I cried all last night over it.

That may well be true, but the false ad that Senator Dole apparently prepared is despicable.

Well, according to Moveon.org and George Soros who claim that the voice of her Democratic contender was "faked," anyway.

It isn't what happened, though.

Moveon.org targeted Senator Dole with a vicious sweep of TV ads over the past few months that an ordinary contender could never have afforded.

re: #7 OldLineTexan

Don't ask me where Fred was. I'm still trying to find Duncan Hunter.

Hunter was my guy, too bad he didn't make a blip on the radar. He had strong military connections, he should have just camped out in South Carolina and ignored the first two primaries. If he could have had an out of nowhere showing in South Carolina, more people would have listened to him and found him a desirable alternative to McCain. Just my opinion though.

As for this message, Fred Thompson is an excellent communicator and this is a great piece. But nobody is going to see it. McCain might not have the money but the RNC does. They should buy an infomercial of their own, make it Sunday night. It should start off with this Fred Thompson message, which lays the theme perfectly, then move on to a Live speech from Sarah Palin to thousands of adoring fans full of energy. This Palin speech should include alot of what she is saying on the stump, and mirror the charm of her convention speech. Then, as she praises McCain they should show the full 4 minute footage of John McCain in that french documentary which was released in full recently. No edits, no voiceovers, keep the original french narrative and just throw the viewer into it. After this is up John McCain can appear and make some quick remarks that he has been down before, america has been down before, but never count us out. He can use that "fight with me" ending of his convention speech and the infomercial shortly after with Joe the Plumber, Palin family and Tito the builder around him.

hey why not? I think it would work and would be much more fun to watch than that Obama propaganda bore fest. It would also be cheaper because of the lower production value (no hollywood directing here) and the RNC wouldn't put it on so many stations. Just Fox, CBS and NBC. Maybe Fox News Channel. they could try to get ABC and cut out NBC to save a million, but I think this is what they should do.

Even if the RNC has to take out a loan to pay for it, you know they will get that money back quickly in panic donations if Obama wins and the Dems sweep the congress.

3. Harry Reid - Corrupt land deals and a surrender monkey
4. Kerry - His wife is like fingernails on the chalkboard.
5. Biden - The biggest idiot in the senate...even voted against the Alaska Pipeline.

Kerry's the one at the top of my list. No one else even comes close. GREAT NEWS FROM PA

Murtha Begging For Money:

[Link: polipundit.com...]

Veteran Democratic Rep. John Murtha (Pa.) has sent out a last-minute plea for $1 million to save his hotly contested seat, endangered by his own remarks describing his district as racist.

In an e-mail sent to potential donors, Murtha’s campaign asked his supporters to maximize all campaign contributions.

“We need to raise another $1 million to compete,” his campaign fundraiser Susan O’Neill wrote in the e-mail obtained by The Hill. “We need money immediately.”

O’Neill blamed Republicans from outside Pennsylvania for Murtha’s problems. Polls show Murtha, running for his 18th term, ahead of his GOP opponent by just a few percentage points.

“Congressman Murtha is in a brutal reelection campaign,” O’Neill wrote. “The Swift Boaters have put up a candidate from Virginia and have raised millions of dollars against Congressman Murtha. In addition, other 527s and the [National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC)] have spent millions to smear Congressman Murtha on TV, radio and in newspapers.”

He deserves to lose

Kay Hagan Responds to Dole's "Godless" Attack Ad

Dole faked Hagan's voice in the ad. It's just about as dishonest as you can get.

Well, I can see that I am the minority here. But I don't think she faked the voice...she simply played the woman at the beginning stating her position and the position of the group....that is done in a lot of poltiical ads.

It is not a well done ad...but I believe that Dole was just asking that if they don't believe in God and she is a Christian, then WHY ARE THEY HOLDING A FUNDRAISER FOR HER? What is the connection between the two?

That is a valid quesion, but not well stated. The ad should have been pulled. But this is not the worst ad ever. I will now slink into the background.

He does the focus groups on FOX News after debates and also did them during the primaries. I don't mind him so much as some of the people in the focus groups. Having served the Mortgage Banking industry in the '80's, I'm heartbroken to read your words. The interesting fact is that the current rate of delinquencies is IMHO, a direct result of relaxed underwriting requirements.

There is again IMHO, anecdotal evidence of just plain fraud on many of these so-called mortgages.
* Borrowers who claimed to have more income or less debt,
* Sellers who inflated the value of the properties,
* Appraisers who went along with inflated property values and questionable "comps",
* Mortgage originators who didn't to "their homework",
* Guarantor Agencies who knew the deals were questionable, but did nothing about it,
* Federal & State Governments who mandated extremely relaxed credit policies.

And the ones who have gotten hurt are - for the most part - those lenders and originators who obeyed the rules and made prudent loans - such as your company.

All I can offer is the adage "hang in there!" It appears that this current credit crisis was initiated by a rather small number of Financial Institutions that stopped lending to others and encouraged Banks to follow suit. Now that there has been a lot of attention paid to the issue of liquidity, things may get a lot better far more faster than any might expect.

re: #415 JustAGal

Where to begin? 40 employees? That's pretty good for a small company. I started traveling for a foreign machine tool company back in 2000 when the economy was really in the toilet and Bush being blamed for it. His policies got this country back on track again within early 2001. The press vilified him and his policies from day one of his administration. Ever wonder why, when a republican takes office that there are many more homeless the day they first take office than there were the day before? The lies of the press.

Obama is the snake oil salesman promising everything while delivering only poison. He's got to overcome the Constitution and opposition in the house and Senate before getting any of his policies enacted. The dems controlled both the house and senate since 2006 and did nothing to exercise that power. What makes you believe they will act any faster than they did in 2006-2008? I suspect that the image of hyenas fighting amongst themselves while feasting is the image of our government should Obama gain control. Your friends and customers who hold out hope for relief from Obama are in for a sad reality check. I would suggest they get the cable turned off, hook up an antenna, sell vehicle #3 and look to get out from under a mortgage that they can't afford. They will have to live within their means for several years and it won't be fun. Survival never is.

The RNC paid for this video (says so at the end) and as such it represents what they are trying to sell the public. I know there are good guys in the RNC, my senator is definitely one of them (he maintained his NO vote for the bailout + pork). But the RNC as a whole lost its credibility and that is why the U.S.A. is about to elect someone who, I believe, genuinely HATES this country.

Yes, she did fake the voice. The ad ends with a picture of Hagan, and someone saying "There is no God." The very clear implication is that Hagan is saying the words.

It's deeply dishonest.

the woman saying "there is no God" (Ellen Johnson) is the woman they use in the ad, speaking to a group of people. She clearly states "there is no God" and people cheer. It is a powerful line meant to resonate with the viewer.

Tagging on at the end may seem sneaky, but if one actually watches the commercial they'll know that it is not Hagan saying those words, but Ellen Johnson. She has said it multiple times, heck I saw her on O'Reilly. The fact remains, Hagan seems to have met with this group whose sole purpose is to promote activist atheism in the Congress. They are Fundamentalist Atheists who would like to see Atheism as our natural religion.

The ad is fair in my opinion and tagging the "there is no God" line at the end is fine as long as Ellen Johnson is identified as the one who said it at some point.

The heat on Senator Dole is coming directly from Moveon.org (George Soros.)

Couldn't care less about whether MoveOn.org is attacking Dole in this one -- I think that ad is deceptive and creepy, and I came to this conclusion all by myself, after watching it and Hagan's response.

Hagan's voice wasn't faked, though.

A still photograph of Hagan with the same Godless American PAC rep saying "There is no G-d" in a distant-sounding voice that couldn't possibly be speaking from a still photograph (in any case) isn't a "faked" voice.

The words on the screen say "What did Hagan promise in return?" as the voice of the Godless American PAC rep says "There is no G-d" again.

They are Fundamentalist Atheists who would like to see Atheism as our natural religion.

Where did you get this information from? I'd never even heard of this group before seeing the ad, but the mission statement on their web site doesn't seem particularly outrageous -- and they certainly aren't advocating "atheism as a natural religion."

GAMPAC endorses candidates for public office who support the First Amendment separation of church and state; defend equal rights and protections for our nation's godless Americans; inform our community of the voting records of their elected representatives on issues of concern; and support our goal of having "a place at the table" in formulating public policy.

In addition, GAMPAC will facilitate the training and development of those godless Americans seeking to bring their organizations talents to the field of electoral politics.

There's nothing in there that says they're trying to destroy anyone's religion.

They've been on my radar for a few years now. I've heard and read interviews from several of their representatives and their ranges from innocuous to inflammatory. One thing is clear, they are not concerned with separation of church and state, but separation of God and state. Separation of God from American life. They don't like seeing God mentioned in public life, on our currency, in our pledge, on our monuments. They don't like how the President takes his oath on the bible or how Congress is often lead in prayer. They want to do away with all of this.

They aren't much different then the many self proclaimed "moderate" muslim groups out there who have obscured their real agenda. Your blog keeps a watchful eye on these groups as a matter of fact because you have your reasons to suspect.

And to be clear, I have nothing against Atheists or Agnostics. There are many atheists I know who live filled with Christian values and morals who happen to not accept the divinity of Christ or the existance of any deity for that matter.

OK, one more time: Senator Dole did not "fake Hagan's voice;: it's a reprise of a statement from one of the Godless orgs. members.

"Legitimize this group?"

What would you rather do with them -- put them in jail?

Like it or not, they ARE a legitimate group of Americans, with opinions that differ from yours. That doesn't make them evil or illegitimate.

Legitimize, as in give them influence or power instead of keeping them on the fringe where they belong. No I do not want them put in jail and never even suggested that. I disagree with their goals though and it is why I would not want a politician open to their lobbying.

I am not familiar with your personal beliefs charles, but I am not advocating an inquisition against atheists. But I do feel our unalienable rights as Americans are God given.

In the United States, citizens have the right to believe or disbelieve anything they choose. And they also have the right to participate in the political process, and advocate for their causes.

This includes atheists.

That Dole advertisement is pure fear-mongering, using extreme language and deceptive tactics, and it's disgraceful.

Uh, hang on a minute.

She doesn't say, "I won't have to pay my mortgage."

She says, "I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage."

Not the same thing at all.

It is nothing more than posing the the problem in a different way. Spinning comes to mind. Her premise was all about that the "0" would relieve her of her mortgage obligations so she should not worry if things got worse. In other words, she wouldn't have to worry about paying her mortgage.

When I divorced, meeting the mortgage payment, was a major concern of mine. To use your logic, I should not worry since the gubinet will assuage my concerns. Man, I could have saved a LOT on anti-depressants!

Sorry Charles, I never thought that I would ever take issue with something you posted but I guess there is a first for everything. I know I'm late to the thread and may have missed the boat here. If so, please accept my apologies

We also, as free americans, have the right to speak out against those we disagree with and to put counter pressure on a candidate who is being pressured by an opposing group.

and as I already said, I believe these people are more than just atheists. I have nothing against Atheists, though I disagree with them, ok?

I disagree.

When you say you "won't have to worry about paying your mortgage," you're saying that you'll be able to pay the mortgage.

When you say you "won't have to pay your mortgage," you're saying you're not going to pay -- that you don't have to pay it at all.

Two very different things.

Yes, they're both driven by an overdose of Koolaid, but they're not equivalent.

LOL! There is nothing more comforting than the knowledge of the fact you did it on your own.

Kinda gives new meaning to "self-esteem". That statement includes a lesson that the left refuses to learn; self-esteem like love, respect and honor are values that have to be earned and will never be a given commodity.

Did anyone else think that the vidio presented an exaggerated jerk in Thompson's hands and head?

My first choice was Thomson, then Romney, and reservedly McCain.Never Palin! My doubts were never about her being a women. Women are the hope of the world. Palin lacks experience.

McCain would never pick Romney, the obvious choice, because Romney played the primaries to win. McCain felt he played unfairly.
McCain's ruefulness was his ultimate downfall.

Of course, unless he wins. Then forget what I just said.

564 Fierce Guppy  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 4:49:47pm

Wow! That was one magnificient address to the nation. For once here is a speech that was neither cheesy nor full of cliches, but a plain spoken, honest address summarizing the essentials defining the current state of affairs. My favourite is Fred's grasp of the fact that the financial crisis is not the fault of capitalism, but the federal government continually administering social policy through the Federal Reserve. What a sack of crap John McCain for doing nothing to counter the claims that this mess was the fault of "capitalism", "greed" and "Wall street". The man disgusts me. That a creature like McCain gets to be the Conservative candidate for the Presidency amongst far better choices like Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney, and Rudi Giuliani is symptomatic of how lost Conservatives are ideologically. Another part of Fred's address I enjoyed immensely was on the nature of Man.

"We don't believe that Man is supposed to me kept, fed, and protected from the elements by a master. We believe that Man was meant to be Free. Entitled to be Free. It's an inalienable Right, endowed by our Creator. When Free and inspired, man can achieve great things for his family, his community, and his Nation. In fact this belief is what we built our Nation on."

Except for the typically Conservative bit about God, and the absence of any mention of Man being able to achieve great things for his own benefit, too, it was simply grand. Loved it.

8.5/10.

How Long Do We Have?

About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.";

"A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.";

"From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years."

"During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:
1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage"

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000 Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Gore: 19; Bush: 29

Square miles of land won b y: Gore: 580,000; Bush: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Gore: 127 million; Bush: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Gore:
13.2; Bush: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory Bush won was
mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country. Gore's territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency
and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals and they vote, then we may say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

Pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing
that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.

Actually those are two separate quotes from two different people. The second is said to be by Benjamin Disraeli. And you missed a part, after abundance comes selfishness and then complacency. either way, thanks for posting that, I had forgotten about these words and they hit home every time i read them.

I was watching O'Reilly earlier and he showed a poll showing McCain only receiving around 33% of the Hispanic vote. That is absurd, Bush got 44%. The illegal immigration issue is a huge problem, but it is hard to battle politically. Democrats use it is a racial scare tactic, Rockefeller rpeublicans use it for cheap labor. It is very hard to combat this issue. Either Democrats start getting honest, or Republicans need to start reaching out to Mexican American citizens and explain to them that they are AMERICANS, this isn't about race no matter what some race baiter in the media might say and that secured borders are in America's interest. Hispanics are a constituency who are more than willing to vote for Conservatives (W got 44% in 04 and Jeb got over 50% in Florida) based on social values and low taxes. But this immigration issue is killing the Republican party and the country. There has to be an effort to reach out to Mexican-Americans as well as other immigrant communities and remind them how parasitic illegal immigration is on our economy. It must be done in a tender way which appeals to their patriotism.

re: #572 RedVoter

I don't buy into the 200 years thing at all.

I say so because I divide all history into BW AND PW- pre and post Washington. George Washington, the more I learn about him, was the game changer for the ages. For all our perfections, we have built the greatest society in human history. Are we plummeting towards some pit I don't know about or is our trajectory still rising? Never before has an non-territorial empire ever been built. Thirty years after Vietnam, this nation got bushwhacked on 911 and the nation showed the very character and strength that got us here.

During almost 8 years of war, the nation has stayed strong and managed to go about its business whie fighting international terror in 110 countries across the globe.

IN 1776, Tories expressed fear reservation and doubt and the American nation still rolled to victory despite facing the most powerful nation on earth.

Would we do well to empty our Universities of the worst commies and leftists? Yes, but part of our strength is the ability to discuss anything and come to right conclusions, hearing left voices telling us to pack it in and become France only works in college towns.

575 AnnaS  Sat, Nov 1, 2008 7:52:12pm

Where are voters able to see this talk from Fred Thompson? Only here? Is it being sent out anywhere? It needs to be seen and time is short!
