11 astronmr20  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 7:35:17pm

Just some thoughts of mine;

Figured I'd post some them after "meditating" on this election so much lately.

I have not been on this earth for that many presidential elections, but I feel something brewing akin to a sleeping, un-tapped energy that awakens close to the general election without fail each and every time:

It's the steady heartbeat; the rhythmic daily plodding of conservatism. Not slumbering, but rather manifest throughout much of the seasons and subsequent years between elections not as political activism, but rather as the everyday activities of the Common Man.

This conservative "energy" has no time for making paper-mache geese, screaming at passers-by, igniting flags, or pooping on sidewalks. Rather, it exists in the day-to-day simplicity of getting up every morning, rather than sleeping in. Of working, rather than holding out it's hand. Of raising and teaching it's own children rather than finding someone else to do so. Of walking, cycling, or driving to a dayjob; opening a shop, digging a ditch, perfecting an invention, and responsibly saving for it's own retirement. Of loving and providing for it's own family the way God (or nature, if you will) intended.

...Day-to-day, week-to-week, with the methodical yet unstoppable force of a glacier.

That is the thrust, the essense, the "energy" of what real American conservatism is, and it pervades the fabric of this country from coast to coast in more ways than the screaming "anti-matter" of this energy can imagine. So, for one day every 4 years, it slowlly turns it's head, puts down it's plough of every-day-ness, and casts a ballot for itself.

This is the "silent majority" that makes this nation great. This is the steady, un-wavering energy that will, nay, must save this country next Tuesday.

"Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror or Nosferatu) is a German Expressionist vampire horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok. The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was in essence an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with names and other details changed because the studio could not obtain the rights to the novel (for instance, "vampire" became "Nosferatu," and Count Dracula became Count Orlok)."

21 ClosetConservative  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 7:36:44pm

Folks:

On the subject of silencing dissent at LGF, I don't think it's a very good idea. A straight-up echo chamber does nothing but breed nutty conspiracy theories. While the majority of posts here are entirely sensical, sometimes I see stuff that gets a little too theoretical. Whenever I feel myself getting that way, I make sure to get away from the keyboard and take a walk around the city. When you're posting political theory, you have to remember that you're dealing with people and culture. This is why liberal social engineering never works, but this could also damage our cause greatly. We need a plan that we can (in crude language) explain to the political neophytes that dominate this country. That sounds snobby, but I don't mean it like I say it. Some people don't have time to tune into the political scene so we need to be able to take it to their level. All of this rhetoric about American exceptionalism and spreading democracy is essential, but when it gets down to the nitty-gritty, what people REALLY want to know is who will lower their taxes, who will allow them to prosper, and who will make a better school available to their children.
And back to the idea of silencing dissent at LGF. Dissent isn't only just a great way of bringing our rhetoric back down to earth as it confronts us with a human opponent, but it's also a great way to practice critical thinking. Being confronted with an opposition point of view allows us to defend our position and, in doing so, recognize new facets of our ideas that we never thought about before. It can also help us refine our ideas to connect with Joe Six-Pack, like I talked about above. When someone attacks your position, it forces you to think of a way to defend it. Doing so enriches your understanding of your own position as well as the strengths of the opposing position.
There are a lot of election-year issues with gray area, especially when it comes to social issues. Abortion is cruel and disgusting, but is it worth destroying a teenager's life to bring a life into the world? Gay marriage may or may not be forbidden by the Bible, but is it worth splitting the country over? And while stem cell research may seem like a scary concept, isn't it worth it if it saves someone's life? We need to get away from the 'Abortion is cruel, disgusting, wrong, etc.' rhetoric and get into REAL solutions to REAL problems. Being a teenager myself, I know that abstinence-only education has a lot of drawbacks. Did you know that 25% of the teenage female population from the ages of 12-18 have some kind of STD? Once again we're at a crossroads between rhetoric and reality. The fact is that hormones are hormones and kids will be kids. I don't deny that there is a cultural problem, but I think that no political party can overcome base human desire.
I do, however, think that there are clear and definitive solutions to the problems of connecting rhetoric and reality. Instead of teaching abstinence in our public school systems, why not teach the virtues of personal responsibility? Sure, it won't get to all the potheads and other fringe societal groups, but it can make a difference. And instead of an absolute policy on abortion, why not go for a pragmatic solution? Perhaps one that allows abortion in the first trimester? It's still horrific, but the fact of the matter is that there are girls and women that really screwed up and are really pregnant. That's going to remain a problem until we teach proper use of contraception and the virtues of personal responsibility. We, as conservatives, have GOT to strike a balance between theory and reality. Conservatism has a bright future in this country, but only if we can pull away from absolutism to deal with issues.

22 ClosetConservative  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 7:36:49pm

In conclusion, I'd like to reinforce the fact that yes, I am a conservative. I am fairly socially liberal (or apathetic, I guess), but I don't feel that the government should have to pay for abortions. Politically I am conservative- On the War in Iraq, the economy, and more. I'm out of space. Thanks for reading.

blockquote>XXII

Once I saw mountains angry,
And ranged in battle-front.
Against them stood a little man;
Aye, he was no bigger than my finger.
I laughed, and spoke to one near me,
"Will he prevail?"
"Surely," replied this other;
"His grandfathers beat them many times."
Then did I see much virtue in grandfathers --
At least, for the little man
Who stood against the mountains.

Just read the piece in this thread - well-put! I believe there's enough information out there (no thanks to the MSM, but in spite of them) to put Obomber into second-place.

It's the right thing to do. But I'll LOVE to see the media recriminations and second-guessing as to why they couldn't push him into first.

I just checked Real Clear Politics and they have Zogby at Obama +7, so if Drudge is right, that's a heck of a move.

RCP is a moving average and includes polls that are modeled expecting Dem turnout to be 10 or more points higher that GOP. It is almost always only 2 to 4 points.

In time honored Chicago fashion. I expect that the winners will not enjoy themselves much at the rally. Well, after Obama loses, hopefully they'll have time on 11/5 to visit some of Chicago's fine museums and see something worth seeing.

My very same idea. To see the look on Obamalamadingdong's face if that was to really happen. Maybe, just maybe, they may actually have some concern for the nation's future.

Naw. They can't do that openly (OK, maybe Bill can get away with it)... Hillary wants her chance for 2012. She needs to remain a team player... at least in name... to do that.

Not going to happen.

If they did that, they'd totally alienate the Dem base, and never get elected as a Dem again.

But you just know, even though they'd never admit it publically, that BOTH of them would much rather have McCain in the White House, not only because it then makes a 2012 run for Hilary possible, but because its just better for the country.

103 Pepper  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 7:48:20pm

Pollsters make their money off getting it right. The consortium polling is over and now it is everyone for themselves. The Paid performances are finishing. These guys need to be accurate now. Everyone remembers the the pollster who got it right. Time to make the donuts.

Every election shares this aspects in common. Maybe not as slanted as this one, but each gets more canted.

This is the election to the finish. Do your part talk to your friends, get out the vote, and remember winners never quit and quitters never win.

RCP is a moving average and includes polls that are modeled expecting Dem turnout to be 10 or more points higher that GOP. It is almost always only 2 to 4 points.

That's correct, but they show the individual polls at their site. They currently have Zogby at Obama +7. As arethusa mentions, that is a 3 day rolling average, so it's not really an apples to apples comparison.

It is very worth reposting!

The kid has been really fretting over the possibility of Zero winning. I am of the mind that McCain will landslide it, but for some reason he doubts. *smile!*

Your post really impressed him. Now he knows that I am not alone in my unconventional thinking.

I do believe it's so hidden, because it's so common. We see it in Democrats as well, and more manifest this time in "PUMAS," if you will. It's quite pervasive in America, which is what sets us apart from a lot of the rest of the world. Oh I believe it's in otherplces, too, but in those places, it's finally been driven into hiding, with the most conservative major parties over there being even more liberal than our Democrats.

As with Europe, before long, this mindset of using those boot-straps, of taking care of ourselves, of making our OWN communities and nation great-- can be driven under ground by incessant whiners, government-glorifiers, and people who scream "racist" when we dare to question Islam.

We can't let that happen here. We are not over that cliff yet.

So...

You are perhaps a crop-duster, an amateur astronomer, AND a pirate?

(:

This reminds me of a Halloween episode of Roseanne where Rosie dresses D.J. up as Alfalfa from the little rascals. He's upset, however, as most of his friends are dressing up as the Terminator. Dan even tries to tell him that "Alfalfas can beat up Terminators." Finally, they give up and let him go change into his terminator costume.

While he's gone, Jackie comes in and talks to Roseanne. They talk for a while, and the D.J. comes back in.

D.J. has put on lots of Terminator gear, but has also obviously left much of the Alfalfa costume on, including the hair spike in the back. Jackie sees this bizarre costume, and asks Roseanne what he's supposed to be.

"I don't know . . . the Alfalfinator?"

It still cracks me up twice every time I see it! First, when I see the costume itself, and 2nd when I hear the line.

re: #177 TheMatrix31

So is this Zogby poll "reliable" or what?

Well, presumably he uses the same methods as for his 3-day poll, so why not.

I have some issues with Zogby as a pollster. He does the usual number-crunching, but admits that he weights his results with his own sense of "what's happening on the street." (Perhaps working with Reuters and C-SPAN on his daily poll mitigates that tendency of his.) That said, he was right on the Presidential election in 2004, right in 2000 (if you accept that saying Gore would win the popular vote "right"), and called 17 of 18 Senate races correctly in 2006.

Ok, I lied, was reading a few more posts. That was the show that got me interested in theatre when I was 17. I played "Teddy." Yes, it was high school. I didn't get the part because I had any interested in drama, I was told by the drama teacher that I was playing "Teddy" becuase I was the only fat kid in the school.

It worked out ok. Thank goodness, at least I had a career to fall back on when my programming career went south 5 years ago.

One lady who had moved from California constantly and loudly badmouthed McCain. One couple wished for McCain to lose AZ so he'd be humiliated. What she saw most was people holding a place in line for familly and friends. Not a big deal when it's a short wait, but many waited 3+ hours to vote. Good thing I wasn't there. As I recall, the best poll in '04 was IBD (Investors Business Daily), within 0.4% of the actual count. Zogby has always had a heavy Democrat bias and if memory serves, did indeed call it for Kerry all the way to the end. Which makes this one point lead for McCain so encouraging.

There's a lesson in that.

I spent over $80.00 for The Kid's Darth Vader costume. He's worn it around the house for about two weeks, during the day and at night with the lights off. Tonight, when we get to doing the ToT, he refuses to wear the gigantic mask because "I can't see anything".

ACK.

You know, we're doing the same thing Europe has been doing importing cheap labor rather than getting our own population to do the grunt work. I used to work the orchards in the summer but I don't think it's even possible to hire kids to do much farm work. I know you can't wash dishes 30hrs a week when you're in high school in oregon. I tend toward a more well controlled open border - fine with McCain plan as long as border were controlled first.

We are just fortunate that to people we import (turn a blind eye to entering illegally) are really not that culturally different than we are.

I can sort of understand the anger of of some of these guys - The incredibly tolerant Danes were getting torn over the Arab population not assimilating when I was there 20 years ago. But they still took in tons of refugees and whatnot because it made some people feel good about themselves, and hell, someone had to deliver papers and do the other menial tasks.
But fjordman and the others should get mad at the right people.

re: #11 astronmr20

Just some thoughts of mine;

Charles, itwould be nice if you had the upding thing on the bottom rather then the top. I hate trying to scroll back up to give some one an upding, especially with the longer reads.

Letting a teenager pursue whatever avenues of exploration life offers is a very worthwhile goal, but is it worth killing an unborn child to do it in all circumstances? (And isn't giving birth to that child one of the avenues of exploration life offers to that teenager?)

Gay couples who live in states with strong domestic partnership laws have all of the rights and privileges accorded to heterosexual married couples, but is it worth splitting the country over insisting that the word "marriage" be applied to gay couples?

Curing terrible diseases is a laudable and desirable goal, but should we kill unborn children to turn them into medicine?

Think.

I think Obama will underperform Kerry in drawing the "black vote".

I think Obama's membership in TUCC left a bad taste in the mouths of many African Americans. His membership there kept many from fully embracing him as they otherwise would.

The belief system of that church isn't widely popular among blacks; I think only 10% -12% of blacks belong to a "liberation theology" church. The rest look upon those beliefs as extreme, and a bit unsettling. People may support him in a phone poll, but many folks will be leery of voting for him because of that church.

Great point about the socialist household. Obviously, parents provide more for their kids than the government should provide for us, but the idea that everything will always be taken care of, no matter how irresponsible you are has to start somewhere, and I think that it's usually in the home.
College is another place with that same mentality, which is probably yet another reason that college students are so enamored with Obama. I'm a freshman in college, and I'm more and more worried about trying to get a good job 4 years from now. The thing that kills me is that the students here are going to vote Obama, even though they have a lot to lose by doing so. 81% plan to vote for Obama, and only 12% for McCain, and that was from a survey that didn't seem to be all that well run, so in reality it's probably even higher. It's easy to be pro-redistribution when your parents are paying for you to live by yourself, party, and spend all day talking about Plato, but their votes next Tuesday will come back to haunt them once they have to venture out into the real world.

And look at a "normal" picture of Max. Not to far from the actual character.

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Interestingly, a few years ago there was another movie also called Nosfuratu. It was a fictionalized, dark-comedy version of the filming of the old silent classic, and the premise of this movie was that the guy playing the vampire in that old movie... actually was a vampire, and actually was the character being played in the movie, and the director of the movie was covering up for it and keeping the vampire supplied in blood and stuff so he'd stay out of trouble. Hehe.

Interesting concept, that. :D :D :D

As for the original Nosfuratu... it was also the movie that invented the concept that vampires are killed by sunlight: They needed another way to kill off the vampire at the end of the movie than having a stake be driven through his heart... so it wouldn't be AS obvious this was a rip-off of Dracula.... so they had the vampire get caught by surprise by the sunrise and then fade away right there on the spot.

What about the fact that his father was African and not African-American? Do you think that will dampen enthusiasm for him on Election Day among African-American voters?

Well, I'm not an expert on the black vote, but I don't think that is a factor. If he does underperform, it'll be due to TUCC. Liberation theology is seen as odd by many who go to mainstream black churches.

re: #289 stevieray

On Rush this afternoon (think it was Rush) I heard that black support for Obama in Missouri was underperforming (~75% instead of the expected 90+%). May be something to that.

This matchup is certainly doing strange things to the usual Democrat and Republican demographics.

No, but that was when movies were more interested in grit and grim instead of glamor and greatness. I love all the early German expressionistic (sp?) film. Of course, I would say Metropolis has to be on top of my list.

They found a lost copy of the uncut version of Metropolis... the version that existed before the movie distributors decided to re-edit the film for American audiences and stuff.... Apparently all the missing scenes, save one, are in this copy... and that one remaining "missing" scene isn't so much missing as rather badly mangled and might still be able to be salvaged. (It was at the end of a reel, and apparently, some long time ago, the projector tried to eat it...)

I look forward to seeing the FULLY restored version of this major milestone of a film in a few months time.

What I am saying is that The One is a demagogue - his speeches sound great, but when you parse them there is absolutely nothing there. He is truly scary with the way that he enthralls the moonbat crowds - almost Hitlerian, if that is a word. Even Bill Clinton's speeches had more substance. This guy is truly a different type of cat than Clinton.

If you do not think that they will turn on him, why does the democrat controlled Congress have a lower approval rating than Bush? It is not because of the conservatives - it is because the far left moonbats are pissed at them also for not going far enough. The One will get in there and have to change his stance on some issues and there they will go - they just can't help themselves. I am hoping that the way that he has begun to raise his back leg and piss on the press lately will hopefully bear fruit some day. Kicking reporters off his plane from papers who endorsed McCain is bound to piss off some of those reporters. As arrogant as this guy is, he won't be able to help himself.

You got that right! I never thought I'd find much common ground with Hillary supporters, but it turns out they aren't as far left as I thought they were... at least the PUMAs aren't.

Strange bedfellows, indeed.

But reassuring in a way. Maybe this country isn't as unbridgeably divided as it first appears to be on the surface. Good news, that.

I and Happy Halloween my fellow LGF lizard friends !

Just had to share the great news my wife gave birth to a beautiful bouncing baby girl here in Hamilton , ON Canada! We named her Zoey ! 6 lbs 5 oz born 2:18 PM today (halloween) I call her my lil' Pumpkin ! :-)

That is great news.. Congrats! My oldest son was born on Halloween 17 years ago. I remember how it snowed here that day in the early afternoon. (Long ago before global warming gave us 65F and swarming mosquitoes on Halloween../)

Hey, and congratulations to Iowahawk on being featured on the Rush Limbaugh website.

Rush mentioned zombie's reporting on Prairie Fire today as well (don't know if he credited zombietime).

326 Yankee Sojourner  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 9:00:14pm

A little blip on the political radar today: Hillary & Bill's support for Murtha. Campaigning for Murtha! Pisses me off.

Why do I get the feeling Obama's got those two by the short hairs -- that in order for him to pay down Hillary's campaign debt they have to do his bidding no matter how vile?

What a cute name. Congratulations! If this is your first you'll find you no longer wear your heart on the inside of your body, but on the outside exposed to every raw element of this world. You'll never be the same. It's a God thing.

My brother was a Halloween baby too.

Lot of disturbing news tonight on LGF. Voter fraud in Ohio. Obama singing the praises of an anti-Jewish genocidal maniac, 1960's radical liberalism noticed by Uncle Fred.

Then it hit me: 1824. This election may well go the House of Representatives. Start writing your Reps. tomorrow, friends. Our survival as a people, a body politic of democratic republicans, depends upon it!

Strange thing last week driving by MLK Avenue/Ainsworth. Big group from a black church with anti-Obama signs. Mostly pro-life and anti partial birth abortion but others as well. This is the corner where the Nation of Islam Guys usually hand out papers and scowl at white folk. Wasn't them though.

I have to say that I'm saddened by the Spencer thing. I've been an admirer of his for a long time, and I read JihadWatch and DhimmiWatch pretty regularly. I'm very disappointed that Robert has chosen to throw his lot in with the likes of GoV and Fjordman; the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend.

Charles, you did the right thing, but you don't need me to tell you that.

good bye and good luck Charles. you can remove my account from LGF, the spat with JihadWatch was it for me. I gave you the benefit of the doubt after the Fjordman fight, but really? Jihadwatch a nazi?

You've lost your credibility as far as I'm concerned. You're gone from my RSS and my bookmark.

Good night and Good Luck.

Good riddance. I don't know how you could have found middle ground so far if you Fjordman almost broke the straw for you. What Fjordman stands for is clear as daylight.

Goodbye, lilredspeck. I see you've posted... like... 10 posts on LGF, but you've been a member... almost nine months...

Which means your opinion on LGF doesn't have much weight considering how... much... you've participated here. :D
