I'm really in a Black Flag mood tonight. Earlier it was The Middle Class, then it progressed into Circle Jerks and now Black Flag. How much crazier can I get tonight?!

I've never seen them live but they seem like the kinda guys that would put on a good live show. They don't take themselves too seriously. It's a quality sadly lacking in rock music today.

I guess that Cognito or someone else smarter than I is going to have to explain how this is all alright. That this is just how journalists operate.

'Cause I don't get it. I don't want to get it. I'll never get it.

Rosen didn't just embed with the Taliban on an operation - he used his journalistic credentials to help them get past an Afghan army guard.

i did not say i deceived the afghan soldier. on the contrary, both i and the taliban commanders i was with told the afghan soldiers that i was a journalist and in fact i showed him my passport. of course there is nothing wrong with deceiving anybody if its going to protect you, but it wasnt necessary in this case, and i did not claim to deceive them. i in fact had to persuade them that i was a journalist and not a suicide bomber, which is what they suspected at first.

Mr. Rosen enjoys the protections of a US passport; he was born in New York City.

I'd like to say that I never expected this. I can't.

Wow - I just tried the free program "Shazam" on my new iPhone and it found this song when I played the video clip and allowed my iPhone to hear it.

When I'm driving around in North Carolina, I'm always hearing songs I like that I've never heard. I don't keep up on American music while living in Israel so I never have any idea whether the song is several years old or brand new.

Shazam is pretty cool and it will definitely help me figure out what's on the radio.

Cool! I'll be at the Palin rally for sure.

BTW, the effort here in Reno/Washoe County is quite large. They expected about 100 volunteers this weekend, and there's about double that many. Tons came up from CA, including the California Caravan of one bus a several vans from Sacramento. I've heard that there also are busloads from LA going to Vegas/Clark County.

One thing I've found in walking and making some calls is that a lot of folks have already voted. So in a way some of us feel that, given the popularity of early voting, we are wasting our time. Came across a few undecideds and a couple Obama voters on our list.

OK, off to see Neil. G'nite, lizards.

I see. Yeah, they didn't start that DNA crap until '93. I stalled and finally retired so they never got mine.

It just always seemed like a bad idea open to abuse and sure enough within the year, the Mayor of Killeen, TX was suing the Army to present DNA samples of all soldiers at Fort Hood because some short haired guy raped a girl. He lost if I recall.

Glen's version is good, and of course the most popular one. but for me, when the song is really great, it sounds good in almost any version. I'm a big REM fan so no problem there either.

One of the best versions of Wichita Lineman I ever heard was by another great writer/musician Jim Peterik. I heard him do an improptu acoustic version that was mesmerizing.

A report from the trenches:

There seems to be a groundswell of volunteers coming forward for McCain/Palin. The victory center I worked at today was standing room only. People were literally waiting in line to make phonebank calls! (Don't forget you can make call from home too using the McCain website.) People were walking in off the streets and saying "How can I help?" We just need to keep it rocking for another 3 days! If you can't formally volunteer, start your own grassroots movement and just talk to people you know. Many thanks to any and all lizards who are out there fighting the good fight!

re: #53 razorbacker

I guess that Cognito or someone else smarter than I is going to have to explain how this is all alright. That this is just how journalists operate.

'Cause I don't get it. I don't want to get it. I'll never get it.

Rosen didn't just embed with the Taliban on an operation - he used his journalistic credentials to help them get past an Afghan army guard.

Mr. Rosen enjoys the protections of a US passport; he was born in New York City.

I'd like to say that I never expected this. I can't.

If it's true he aided the Taliban in any way, then he should be carted off to prison post haste. Again: assuming he did what you've described.

I'd add that 'embed' is an odd word, for that sort of situation. Most people have no idea what a conflict zone actually looks and sounds and smells and feels like, so the idea of 'embedding' with the bad guys seems to make sense: He was tripping around with people on the terrorist list, so he must have been embedded.

Not really. In lots of places there's no embedding necessary. Quite the opposite, since it's the bad guys who run the joint. It's not that they're holed up in a cave and the military can't find them -- they're out and about on the street.

Obviously it's not that way everywhere, thankfully.

And I'll reiterate, for our e-posterity: If Rosen (!) aided the Taliban in any way, he deserves prison. Can you cite the passage that indicates that's what he did? (Nah, I've not read the whole shebang.)

My dad was a guitar player, and he worked with some of those people - the Lennon Sisters, etc. (as well as Bob Hope, and some other well known entertainers)...I think that's why, whenever I see the episode of The Sopranos where Paulie Walnuts goes to his "Ma's" place, and she's watching Lawrence Welk, I just want to hug that woman - it makes me feel like crying...even though that music makes me want to put a bullet in my head. : )

Two of the major TV networks have temporarily suspended our ad because of complaints by the Obama campaign. They have complained about the pictures used in the ad depicting Obama and Rev. Wright.

Our legal team is fighting back. We expect to be back on the air!

Someone seems to be a little worried.

Of course there is the Johnny Cash cover. (It used to be on you tube...)

Mark Steyn, per usual, hits it out of the park:

The Senator is a wealthy man, mainly on the strength of two bestselling books offering his biography in lieu of policy and accomplishments. Many lively members of his Kenyan family occur as supporting characters in his story and provide the vivid color in it. But they too are not merely two-dimensional cartoons. His Aunt Zeituni, a memorable figure in Obama’s writing, turned up for real last week, when the dogged James Bone of the London Times tracked her down. She lives in a rundown housing project in Boston.

In his Wednesday-night infomercial, Obama declared that his “fundamental belief” was that “I am my brother’s keeper.” Back in Kenya, his brother lives in a shack on 12 bucks a year. If Barack is his brother’s keeper, why couldn’t he send him a ten-dollar bill and near double the guy’s income? The reality is that Barack Obama assumes the government should be his brother’s keeper, and his aunt’s keeper.

More to the point: If Obama is willing to let members of his own family rot in indigent squalor, what makes you think he'll give any more of a shit about you?

If you have to alert someone you are approaching as to an attitude you have - and you expect (possibly) something from them - i.e., business - why in hell would you set the context for anything but neutral? Unless your gig is unlawful.

Enlighten me please.

Merely body art. In the Army environment it was perfectly acceptable. But when I got mine, even then there were "standards". Most were on the arms and torso. Neck and face were never done to my knowledge. I know of no one from my age group that had tattoos on the legs, although I know a bunch of us that had targets tattooed on their butts.

If I wore a long sleeved shirt you would never know I had any. My tattoos, hair, or beard never got in the way of conducting business or attracting/keeping customers, but it was a blue collar environment (tropical plant rental/sales).

480 AceR  Sat, Nov 1, 2008 7:45:56pm

I posted this on an earlier thread. Sorry for the long post, but I have got to get this off my chest.

Personally speaking, for so many years I did what most Americans do. I got up and went to work 5 days a week, paid my taxes, paid my mortgage and bills, gave to my church and to charities, volunteered to help others less fortunate, and if I had enough money left over, I bought things that I wanted or took a nice vacation somewhere.

I am now retired, and I have much more free time to read and think. And like most people, I am very interested in this election. I've voted in every election since 1972, until 2000. The reason I voted Democrat was not because I really thought about or understood all that the Democratic platform was about.

I always voted a straight Democrat ticket mostly because I was raised in a blue collar, union household and since I spent my formative years in the 60's, I was sucked into the Democrat way of thinking. I was duped into believing that Democrats were for the "working man" and Republicans (they were conservatives back then) were mean bastards who worked you like a slave and paid you a pittance for your work.

But the older I got, the more I looked at the Democrat's and what they stood for. I remember being stunned by Clinton's behavior in the White House and all of the scandals swirling around him and Hillary. I saw how destructive unions are (I was forced to join a union in my last job) and how they are populated by thousands (millions?) of neer-do-wells who honestly could not make it in the real world. Unions are not for the people, they are for arm-twisting power through the union dues they demand.

And I saw my tax dollars rise, so that more could be spent on Federal and State programs to help better "educate" our children with the very likes of Ayers, meanwhile they churn out thousands of illiterates every year who can't read, write, or do arithmetic. And the NEA wants to pay these teachers even more money!

And so I decided to change my vote.

After I retired back in April, I thought about starting up a small business of my own (maybe a delivery service). I have about $100K to invest but decided I would wait until 2009 so that I could take several months to make my plans and get set up properly. Gas prices are a big consideration, and I needed time to bone up on all of the legalities (tax and otherwise) of starting up a small business.

Meanwhile, I've spent a lot of time reading up on all the candidates and when Obama was nominated, I was stunned. Few accomplishments, even less experience, and a track record of voting "present", but he's a good speaker who just happens to have very suspect alliances and acquaintences. An empty suit with very bad friends.

Fast forward to the economic crisis in Sept. and more recently to Obama's famous comment on "spreading the wealth". Well, let me tell you, I am sick at heart to even think that Obama may have a chance at being POTUS.

I've worked hard all my life, and I have diligently saved my money. I didn't get a college degree, but I went from earning $2,600 in 1969, to $130,000 in 2008. Not bad for someone without a degree. And I was hoping to parlay the money I saved to invest in a small business, but all that is off the table now.

I'll be damned if I will even consider starting a small business should Obama be elected. Why start a small business now, just so that Obama can take more from me by raising my taxes to give to someone who didn't earn it and doesn't deserve it? Bull****.

If there are any undecided voters out there who have read this post and think that Obama might be good for America, given his shady friends and acquaintences, I hope you will reconsider. There are probably quite a few more people like me out there who will not even consider starting a business and employing people if Obama is elected president. Read this WUG newsletter and Prarie Fire book. It will scare the hell out of you. It scared me.

Just had a surreal experience.

I was surfing around, watching a little SNL (which is awful compared to the old days, or any days for that matter) and junk on TV when i came across CNN. The announcer was Jon Damon (i think) an black guy who had an "interview" with someone named Dr. Cornel West. I thought at first I had stumbled back onto SNL but it was an actual interview. He looked like a radical 60's black professor, dissing America, etc. It was really bizarre.

Biden says McCain slow to realize economy's woes

Slow? I believe McCain warned the Dems years ago, but that doesn't count. We had to have this crisis first.

"If John had seen the light, he would really have to acknowledge the economic crisis we're in is the final verdict on the failed economic policies of George Bush," Biden said.

Sometimes I'd like to slap these fellows until they admit who was responsible.

Cog, I'm not the one that described it. Rosen described it.

Cornel West is the rappin' reparations professor.

Cornel West is a Professor of Religion and African American Studies at Princeton University. The recipient of more than twenty honorary degrees and a National Book Award, he is a longtime member of the Democratic Socialists of America, for which he currently serves as Honorary Chair. He is also a co-chair of Michael Lerner's Tikkun Community.

West was born in 1953 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. From a young age, he proclaimed that he admired “the sincere black militancy of Malcolm X, the defiant rage of the Black Panther Party ... and the livid black [liberation] theology of James Cone.”

This guy is at Princton. Anyone know if Michelle MyBelle took classes from him?

One of the things I find unsettling about Cognito is his early assurances that he was working inside the system of MSM for positive change. I have yet to see any change, or any evidence at all that in fact he is a journalist.

I know of many journalists who are not afraid to publish their work, under the most dangerous conditions. We all have read their work. We all get their emails. Cognito is not one of those courageous and productive individuals, at least as evidenced by his contributions here.

Some nuggets of wisdom from Dr Cornel West.

West has branded the U.S. a "racist patriarchal" nation where "white supremacy" continues to define everyday life. "White America has been historically weak-willed in ensuring racial justice and has continued to resist fully accepting the humanity of blacks."

Professor West attributes most of the black community's problems to "existential angst derived from the lived experience of ontological wounds and emotional scars inflicted by white supremacist beliefs and images permeating U.S. society and culture."

Some time way back, I sent an off-blog message, encouraging him to temper his responses a bit, lest he be thought of as an asshole.

He replied in a typical Cognito = asshole fashion, and I let it go at that.

The reason I replied off-blog was because I admired his tenacity, but still considered myself as a newbie. I didn't want to disrupt the apple-cart, as it were.

Since then, I've grown to dislike him, fervently.

At that time, my email application gathered all incoming and outgoing addresses, and logged them.

nirrosen :

objections to my article have been silly so far. i'm a journalist, not an american journalist. my job is not to serve as a propagandist for anybody, just to tell stories and my advantage is that i can tell stories that are hard to come by
any comparison to WWII or the nazis always shows a lack of imagination, but in this case also a lack of understanding. the whole reason why its important to have people like me, able to hang out with militias in somalia, afghanistan, iraq or lebanon, is because they are not a formal army of a formal state, with clear goals, structure, hierarchy etc. on the contrary, their motives are not known and diverse, often at odds, they take up arms for different reasons and as anybody remotely interested in COIN knows by now (except for sassaman perhaps), they do not put down their arms through force, unless you're willing to use force like the russians in chechnya (and that hasnt worked for the israelis), but instead their goals and motives must be understood, and eventually a political accord must be reached.
moreover, journalists regularly embed with the american military when it is conducting operations, attacks, killing. whats the difference?
imagine if that one taliban commander had not screwed up my plans to go with them when they conducted attacks, and i had seen that too. isnt that interesting? isnt it important to understand who they are? and most importantly, wouldnt it make for a fun read?

This is the 'actual issue' of the moment.

At the risk of being jeered, I enjoy Cog's writing. He reminds me of my brother: irritatingly rational, articulate and writes with a smirk of humor. My brother (and father) are both writers (sci fi), the former a far liberal and the latter, well, way to the right of everyone here.

The poster is educated and writes well. S/He's articulate! Oh, whoopdidoo!

S/He also defends the MSM no matter what their transgression.

S/he never has the courage to shed the bullsh*t of ambiguity and take a stand on their convictions in the full light of day. S/He is a loser.

Remember how McCain stopped his campaign to attempt to deal with the start of the financial crisis, and they called him "erratic"? (Obama's response to the crisis: "Hey! You mind? I'm trying to campaign here!...")

But Obama stops his campaign, supposedly to go see his dying grandmother, who apparently wasn't so bad off, and do they call him "erratic"? (Fair enough - there's better words for it...)

Well, we know the first crisis was real, and global in significance. The second - not so much. I take it all back if granny hits the news again anytime soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

"On Internet forums, baiting is sometimes used in attempts to empty forums or reduce a forum's usage. This type of baiting is usually done to make the atmosphere of a forum appear unpleasant or to make forum owners, moderators and long-time users look foolish. A person using this kind of baiting may post comments to elicit rude responses from prominent members of a forum, thus making the responding member or members appear as trolls or flamers to bystanders. re: #680 Cognito

You said that I responded [to, sic] you your post in an 'asshole' way.

Would you care to post the entirety of our exchange? I'm happy to.

Seeing as you're completely unwilling to do such a thing yourself, the short answer is, "no." I have no desire to track back through nearly 2 years of emails to find that conversation. You see, the reward is very small.

That being said, it went a little like this:

TO: Cognito @ someassholemediaconglomerate

FROM: Noam @ EveryonelovesNoamSayin dot com

"Cogs, I think you raise some great points, and I admire you for it, but you might want to temper your responses a bit, 'cuz you're coming off as a pretentious asshole most of the time."

From: Cognito @ someassholemediaconglomerate

To: Noam @ EveryonelovesNoamSayin dot com

"How dare you address me in that manner, you non-someassholemediaconglomerate peon? I work in the main stream media, and our word is the gold standard. It is not to be challenged. Thank you for your mere pittance of an intellectual input. It is nearly appreciated. If you'll be good enough to provide the address of your trailer, I'll send you an autographed copy of my commode (that's what you commoners call a 'toilet')."

Okay, I may have embellished a bit.

I got this earlier today and wanted to share...
Enjoy

'Twas the night before elections

'Twas the night before elections
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!
I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political crap.
When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
Saw Obama and his boys
They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!
He snatched up my money
And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink
He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!
' On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi'
He screamed at the pairs!
They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!
So I leave you to think
On this one final note-
IF YOU DON'T WANT SOCIALISM
GET OUT AND VOTE!

She was talking about the US of A and was expressing a simple hope for peace with a beautiful song.
The CSNY cover was also excellent.

re: #799 Noam Sayin'

Knock yourself out.

All right. I only do it because you've said I responded in a mean or unkind fashion. 'Asshole,' I believe you said.

So here we go. You:

By the way, although I wasn't in a position to post at the time, I'm glad
you busted everyone on the Tony Blair thread the other night. I don't agree
with the way you did it - you could have been cool about it - but I'm glad
you set the dialog straight.

Noam

Me:

Hi Noam,

Thanks for the email. Your note that I could have been cool about it
really sort of bothers me. I don't want to be the beligerent, uncool
guy. I try to be just the opposite, really -- but man, people dial up
the rhetoric so high, on LGF. I thought maybe I needed to yell to be
heard.

But clearly I'm not only wrong, but I've damaged my credibility -- I'm
sorry about that. I'll remember it in future posts.

Best regards,
- C

You:

You were not wrong on the Tony Blair post. You were absolutely correct in challenging people to read that entire article. But instead of saying something like, "Hey guys, some of your posts are incongruous to what the entire article says. I suggest we read the entire thing before offering judgement," you chastised everyone for not reading the article entirely. It was entirely your choice, but your credibility stood so much to gain there. You could have, on that thread, established yourself as a guiding voice on that thread - and as you've seen (poster's name redacted), there's an opening for your reasoned voice.

I've noticed your posts since you joined. You raise good points, but sometimes I feel your arguments are too rooted in your occupation. Deeper study is needed, indeed, but I think the opinions about media bias from Charlse, and the bulk of the knowledgeable LGFers in general, is merited. I have a degree in communications, myself, and one thing I've always watched for is media bias.

As far as your challenges go, many posters at LGF have advance, very specific knowledge of all kinds of things. I suggest offering your challenges in the form of a question [for the sake of argument, fein ignorance, regardless of your scholarship], instead of an outright challenge. I can tell you I've learned much from folks I don't agree with using this method.

Pardon the delay, but I was playing online poker while I composed this. You cost me one tournament, but I felt your outreach deserved a reply.

Keep up the challenges. I appreciate a reasoned argument. Sorry I didn't get around to backing you on the Blair thread.

Noam

Hardly an 'asshole' response, I'd say. And only one of us spoke negatively of someone else here.

I think the media may find itself in an "abused spouse" relationship with Obie if he wins, judging by his penchant for throwing people under buses, telling them to get back on buses, tossing them off of airplanes, shutting out access, and flooding switchboards with calls from his minions. They love him sooo much, and they just know he loves them, but he only hits them because he loves them, don't you see... And they'll need him to keep financially solvent...

I wonder what's going to happen after the election, if Obie wins, will their numbers really go up? What makes them think anybody will watch television more, just because the Mocha Messiah happens to be on it? I'd rather think that people will get sick of All Obama, All The Time, and tune out even more than they already do. Fox's numbers would probably go up. Oprah, John Stewart, and MSLSD will stay the same if they're lucky.

Who do they think they're kidding?

re: #817 hermeneutics

Have you seen the tattoos that read/look like obituaries?
I was behind a girl at the grocery store who had a tattoo with her recently deceased grandmothers name, date of death surrounded by either feathers or angel wings. Just fascinating. I took a pic of her. It literally stretched across her back. She was young, about 20, and I couldn't help wondering how she'd feel about that tat in a few decades when the pain of the loss of her grandmother lessened.

When it comes to honoring someone you love and admire deeply, and particularly if you don't have issues with decorations on your body, it is an absolute badge of honor.

When I finally knew - not long before it happened, mind you - that my brother was not going to win his fight, I started searching my memory for that image I wanted to have with me forever. We didn't get along all that well, but one thing I'm sure he realized was that he was my idol, and I love him. I'll gladly carry his image on my left shoulder (he's left-handed, so, fitting) forever.

I know the artist who will do his image justice. My only hesitance now is that my dad is dying of cancer, and I'll want him there, too - my two most important influences in my life - with me, always.

It's prideful, and I'm sure that girl at the grocery store, was pleased that you would take notice.

That's the thing. People just hop on the train without actually bothering with facts. I said,

If it's true he aided the Taliban in any way, then he should be carted off to prison post haste.

And then again, that,

if Rosen did indeed aid the Taliban -- as someone said -- then he deserves to be marched off to prison. Right now.

I'm sorry, but I'm just not going to talk about my own life here.

Is that really accurate?

From your #370:

Not really. In lots of places there's no embedding necessary. Quite the opposite, since it's the bad guys who run the joint. It's not that they're holed up in a cave and the military can't find them -- they're out and about on the street.

Obviously it's not that way everywhere, thankfully.

Conjecture, or informed opinion based on personal experience of "lots of places"? You imply the latter:

#405 Bobibutu

So have you actually been in a conflict zone and know actually what it looks and sounds and smells and feels like?

#407 Cogito

Yes.

So, in #370 you infer that you are talking about your life experience. In #407, you directly talk about your life experience by confirming a fact.

You will and do talk about your life in this forum. What you won't and don't do is confirm that what you say about your life is verifiably true.
