Obama Flips Off McCain

Just as he congratulates John McCain, Barack Obama scratches his face—first with his index finger, and then…

And remember, he did the same thing to Hillary Clinton in the primary race. Is it deliberate? No one knows but Obama himself. But there used to be a time when presidential candidates would be very careful to avoid offensive gestures like this.

I don't get it. When it was thought that McCain would steal his thunder and announce his VP pick the night of his acceptance speech, McCain said that there'd be no politics that day and sent a congratulations message. This is exceedingly true. I have heard from many who believe their vote for Obama is a vote against "those" who have wronged them over the past 8, 20, 50 years.

The problem is: to the person, they have been part of (or continue to be) part of the "those".

Obama appeals to devotees in Virginia:

I feel like we got a righteous wind at our backs here, but we’re going to have to work. We’re going to have to struggle. We’re going to have to fight.

And here is an exerpt from the writings of Chairman Mao:

The ill wind of opportunism is falling, the righteous wind of socialism is on the rise.

By the end of this year the victory of socialism will be greatly assured. Naturally there will be many struggles ahead and we must struggle hard.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves

-Abraham Lincoln

Read that, throw in a cross and some garlic, and you could completely destroy all lib vampires.

Read that, throw in a cross and some garlic, and you could completely destroy all lib vampires.

You can bring the rich DOWN to the level of the poor
You can bring the strong DOWN to weakness
You can discourage thrift
You can confiscate the money of the wage payer and they will then become a wage earner thereby closing down the original wage earner's place of employment.
You can further your own agenda and consolidate your individual power by inciting class/race/religion hatred.
You can build dependence by punishing initiative and character.
You can build a dependent class of peoples by permanently doing for them what they could and should do for themselves

The question I have is - wouldn't I expect to see a downturn if the market believes the polls/pundits about Obama's lead? I know Tuesdays and Fridays are normal sell-off days, but given his comments about business, energy (bankrupting coal, etc.), shouldn't the market be more nervous?

(Or do they know something I don't...like the fact he's gonna lose?)

obama has shown no grace, no strength of character, no admirable qualities, no courage, no leadership.
and yet he stands before the nation, a candidate for potus, actually giving the finger to mccain, a genuine war hero, a patriot, a decent person.
and obama will get a pass for his vulgarity.

surely his arrogance will be his downfall.

McCain is just the latest target. He already gave the finger to the Constitution. As I recall, he finds the constitution a badly flawed document because it doesn't provide for redistribution of wealth.

- Malcolm X comments - Bamboozled, Hoodwinked

- "Spread the Wealth"

- Bankrupt the coal companies

- Civilian National Security Force that's as large as the military
Retreat from Iraq

- Cripple our defense "I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems. I will not weaponize space. I will slow our development of future combat systems."

- Disarm our nukes "I will set a goal for a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert, and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenal.

Calling attention to the almost certainly inadvertent finger seems frivolous, especially at this point in the race. What we SHOULD take seriously in this video is the crowds' booing of Obama saying that McCain has served this country honorably. These are the people who will believe, as Obama dismantles the free market, that the DOW in 2010 is at 7.000 because of Bush.

Wow, as a pilot, until witnessing that landing, I would have bet a lot of money it was impossible.

I'm a pilot. And I work in computer graphics. It looks impossible because it is. The animation of the plane is all wrong right at the landing. It bounces without enough weight and the roll-out is impossibly short. The effects work of removing the wing was well done, though. It's part of a "viral" marketing campaign for a German sportswear company, killathrill.com.

But landing with a missing wing isn't impossible for all aircraft. Here's the link again.

280 Pookykoala  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 11:29:18am

I believe Charles is correct.
Obama did make the gesture deliberately. If Obama had a habit of making this gesture with his 'finger', it would have appeared more often and we would not be commenting on it right now.
Obama is a calculated man. He deliberately sought out a certain population to befriend. He deliberately sought political offices. He deliberately scrubbed any evidence of his ties with unfavorable groups.
Then, when he is caught, or questioned, he scrubs the incident or the person into oblivion with a calculated spin to discredit the source. This is most likely why the individual in possession the original Khalidi dinner tape is reticent to come forward. Secondly, America witnessed how "Joe the Plumber" was scrutinized in almost every aspect of his life for asking the "One" a real question.
Charles is right. Obama is too calculating, too deliberate, and too arrogant to think that the American public is smart enough to figure it out.

286 Salem  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 11:35:23am

After thinking about it for awhile, I have to say I think it was intentional. At this point I don't think H is so oblivious to his gesticulations. He'd already been called on a similar controversy with Hillary, so I think he'd be very conscious about that middle finger coming out when talking about his opponents. And I believe he hates McCain and even thinks his acolytes would approve. This in no way shakes any foundations, though.

It's OBVIOUSLY deliberate.

He's a complete douche. You can clearly tell he's full of disgust while congratulating McCain. You can tell he's genuinely avoiding any attempt to calm the contempt of his fomented crowd unlike McCain did with his supporters. He's doing the SAME exact sly scummy of a trick he did with Hillary Clinton.

This is a clear representation of the sheer difference between the typical liberal that 0bama represents and the classy conservative that's McCain.

We're totally fucked with this hating punk in the white house.

re: #79 yma o hyd

I just tried to scratch my face like he did - this is in no way an unconscious gesture - it takes determination.

!

I agree - I watched the video and tried to recreate it - its not as easy as it looks... you have to know what you're doing to only use that one finger...

re: #115 clgood

All true enough, but not said by Lincoln. Just so you'll know, it was J. H. Boetcker .

Best,

Thank you - always willing to be fact checked.

re: #177 Thanos

I'm thinking "eh.." and my wife says he definitely flipped it apurpose. My wife is much better at interpreting things like this than I.

It was definitely on purpose. My ex-wife used that gesture to show contempt for people she considered "lower" than her in the food chain. Including me, one reason she is ex.

re: #17 Sharmuta

Well- to be fair, I'm sure it's not just McCain, but that's how he feels about all of our fine military men and women.

And non believers.

306 Irish Rose  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 1:44:30pm

What a petty, narcissistic asswipe.

307 Irish Rose  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 1:50:52pm

Does anyone have a clip of the bastard doing this to Hillary? For comparisons' sake.

308 Irish Rose  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 1:52:39pm

Yeah, here it is.

What a prick.

309 godfrey  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 2:16:40pm

I guess he considers this his prerogative as the Fresh Prince of Bill Ayers.

Obama is a disgrace.

Even Bill Clinton didn't descend to this kind of schoolyard vulgarity.

310 mikefln  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 2:45:14pm

Why does this jugheaded douchebag keep coming to my fair city to pull this crap? Remember the "...and did I mention he's black?" thing? That was here in Jax as well.

Actually, I know why. This is Corinne "Tracksuit" Brown's district. They eat this garbage up with a spoon.

F*** you, too, criminal.

311 jonmc1  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 2:51:43pm

Obama could have given a one finger salute with both hands, WWE style, and his supporters would have gone nuts for it. This is Obama's subliminal shout out to his Progressive Cronies who have nothing better to do but follow Palin around and issue the same salute to anyone daring to voice an opposition to "the one".

312 Jimmah  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 2:54:46pm

I could be wrong, but I don't think this is giving the finger. I think he just has an idiosyncratic way of scratching his face. In my experience giving the finger only works if you are facing or pointing at the person it's aimed at. It's a strictly directional insult, unlike, say, the hand gesture to indicate 'wanker' which works when you are just talking about someone.

313 littleben  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 3:14:55pm

My first impression was that it was an unintentional expression. However, there are two instances when he did the same thing in the Primaries and while speaking about Hillary. It may be a subconscious movement that he has developed to deflect anger or hostility.

I am embarassed to say that I has a law partner once who did this routinely, but never while speaking publically (and he too was on Law Review in law school).

314 AceR  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 3:36:42pm

Okay, folks. Let's all take a moment and scratch our face, first with our index finger, and then with the middle finger.

Does it strike anyone, as it did me, that it is a bit more difficult (maybe awkward) to scratch using the middle finger?

I think it was intentional, and shame on him for doing this, not once but twice on national tv.

Why is it with the Democrats having no class (Obama, Bill Clinton, John Murtha, Cynthia McKinney, Tim Mahoney...)?

315 ypnxjkb  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 3:42:50pm

Is it just me or was he looking my way when the bird flew?
Smug little high school B.S. goes over real good with the granola crowd?
At least Dick Cheney just flat out said it, no sly inuendo or happenstance, just flat out F.U., can't remember who he said it to, must have been one of B.O.'s buddies in the senate.

I'd agree with you -- and pretty much wish I didn't know this -- but after having 3 teen-aged sons and 4 teen-aged stepchildren simultaneously -- this is how it's done when one wants to be surreptitious. My husband concurs. This is how they gave the finger in class at his prep-school (boys). I attended a girl's school. Let me just say that we handled things differently :).

Of course, all these references are to rowdy adolescents. Obama's behavior is not exactly Presidential. Although I do recall a tape of George Bush giving the finger - can't recall the exact circumstances - but it was the more straightforward variety and meant as a joke - caught on camera.

317 Catttt  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 5:00:53pm

I gave Barry a pass the first time he did this.

Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you.

No pass this time. I do not like the cut of Barry's jib.

Ojoe; Thanks for that.
Hubby says that guy's a master pilot, almost looks like he used his tail as his "wings" and his single wing as a rudder.
Just "incredible" is an understatement, must have aviation fuel in his blood.

320 leap_frog  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 5:20:24pm

oh in regards to the crass act by ob.
He's aware of exactly what he's doing.
HE, presuming a win, is sticking it the rest.

321 rboa  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 6:16:43pm

He better stop that. He doesn't know where that finger has been!

322 William  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 7:37:45pm

Definitely not an "accident" or a random finger popping up.

Classless.

323 FreeRadical  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 8:47:18pm

The thing that makes it so obviously on purpose is the overall look about the man during the moments of delivery. Saying F.U. takes a certain ugly mindset. Hussein is clearly not full of happy love and joy at those moments in the tape.

Nope. Rather, he is full of evil. It comes screaming at you from the screen.

The Dark Side of the Force is strong in that one.

324 We need G.C. Scott  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 9:11:05pm

Is there no level of sham-less-ness to which you bigots won't
sink? It's obvious to all but the truly xenophobic that this poor
misunderstood man, whom everyone is out to crucify, was subconsciously reacting to the cankering of disrespectful and unsportsmanlike boos, from his own supporters, toward his praise for Senator Mccain. After all it's up to the leader to promote the example to be emulated, et, al

325 descolada9  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 11:25:58pm

He was not only flipping off John McCain but all of Conservative America as well. He's proven it in his comment and actions all of his professional life and I expect little else from him. The man is little more than a spoiled child.

326 Jed  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 5:59:03am

This is truly disgusting. It shows his true nature, and what he will do to those who disagree with him.

He gives a compassionate appearance and speech, but his true mean nature will come out when he has the power.

If he wins, I shudder to think about the damage he will bring to America.
