Obama's First Fulltime Job: a Company with Ties to the SDS

Politics | Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 10:47:28 am PST

At The Volokh Conspiracy:

Obama’s first fulltime employer, Business International, had substantial SDS ties in the 1960s. After graduating from Columbia in 1983, Obama’s first fulltime job was to work for an international business newsletter firm, Business International. From all accounts (including Obama’s), it appears that this company was business-oriented and mainstream politically, unlike his other fulltime employers before law school.

For that reason, it is a strange coincidence that in the 1960s, Business International also appears to have had closer ties to the SDS than any other American business firm. Yet, because Obama’s college concentration within political science was in international relations, the coincidence may not be as strange as it first appears.

I learned this yesterday when, for a project I’m doing, I had occasion to read Carl Oglesby’s memoir of his days as a leader of the SDS in the 1960s, Ravens in the Storm: A Personal History of the 1960s Anti-War Movement. Oglesby, who was President of SDS in 1966 and 1967, led the largely nonviolent wing of the group in its battles with the violent revolutionary wing (which became the Weathermen). SDS at the time had three national secretaries, two of which were Bernardine Dohrn and Mike Klonsky. Dohrn and Klonsky led the attack on Oglesby and his radical (yet liberal) vision. Although the broad difference in philosophy was the overarching reason for the split, the chief bone of contention at the time was Oglesby’s development of SDS contacts with Business International, a business information and consulting service led by Eldredge Haynes. Indeed, Haynes or Business International are discussed on over 25 pages of Oglesby’s memoir, and they are part of the subtext of many more pages.

I've been surfing communist, semi-communist, socialist and palestinian sympathizer sites for five days looking for a different copy of the Khalidi video, no luck there. However They monolithically support Obama other than some "red herring" boilerplate that makes him out to be just another McCain. (read the comments...)
Anyway after all that this does not surprise me.

As part of a joint “project” with SDS (p. 170), Oglesby arranged meetings with Haynes and Business International clients as part of their “round-table meetings,” allowing SDS to explain their opposition to the war (p. 171). New York SDS members continued to meet regularly with Business International even after Oglesby left New York.

Haynes “had come to agree with SDS about the war, racism, and urban poverty.” (Id.) Haynes, who died in 1976, told Oglesby that if he had been in the same generation as Oglesby, he might have joined SDS. (p. 170) After Robert Kennedy died, Haynes even called up Oglesby and urged SDS to riot: “Get your people out and tear the goddamn place into pieces.” (Oglesby, p. 188)

Nothing particularly shocking here. He's made conscious efforts to associate with leftists and radicals to the point where it's like breathing the air - it's second nature to him and he no longer sees his associations as radical. That's why he didn't think anything of his associations with Wright, Rezko, Ayers, Dohrn, or thought of quitting his associations with the Trinity Church after the revelations about Wright's anti-American diatribes, or Ayers and his Weather Underground terror days.

It also sheds light perhaps on how Obama ended up in the sphere of Ayers and Dohrn and the most radical and violent leftists of the past 30 years.

Glory to the people!

We learn from this that the Dear Leader learned the mechanics of the International Industrial Oligarchy while having his labor exploited at this firm. A fair trade, given that the running dog capitalists will now suffer for their crimes!

That this company had associations with SDS represents the efforts of capitalists to undermine the revolution by co-opting its fervor for illegitimate gain!

But the solidarity and steadfastness of the revolutionaries prevail!

Our course in history is set! We shall destroy the mechanisms of capitalism from within and dispatch repressive freedom where we find it! The righteous wind is at our backs!

Glory to the revolution! Glory to our Dear Leader!

Yup.
They were even worse in a private setting.
I cannot think anyone could have some friends who are nice people then at the same time have some friends like Ayers, Wright, Frank, and so on.
You would not be able to stand them if you were decent yourself.
There's light and shadow.
You'd have to love the shadows to hang with them for long.

24 PAgirlinNC  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 10:58:18am

I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but - there has GOT to be a tie between Ayers and Obama and the rest before he got to Columbia. Obama's mother went to a communist leaning high school in Washington state. Obama's grandfather introduced him to Davis in Hawaii. The family was from Kansas - just so happens that the name of Ayers' radical magazine was named for a town in Kansas. And a million other coincidences.

I know, I know, no connection I'm sure - but there are just too many weird coincidences in Obama's life, resume and friendships that it just makes you wonder....

I have found absolutely nothing in his past that wasn't shady or suspicious. Friends, acquaintances, school friends, professors, associates, political allies....all tainted. And conveniently tossed aside. Even the state Senator (Alice Palmer) that helped him get elected at first, he stabbed in the back and tossed aside.

Even if the average American didn't catch on, you think anyone wanting to get acquainted with him would. People to him are worth no more than a Diamond match, use it, light something, and toss it out.

I can recall doing job hunts and researching the companies I submitted resumes to in order to see if they were in keeping with what I wanted to do, outlook, etc.

He was consciously making an effort to go in this direction. I do not believe this was simple happenstance. Nothing about Obama strikes me as someone who would leave things up to chance.

32 doppelganglander  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 11:01:47am

This clinches it for me. He knew William Ayers in New York in the 1980s, while Bambi was a student at Columbia. How else would he have gotten that job? It certainly explains why he was vague, bordering on dishonest, in his description of it in his book.

General Motors said U.S. car and light truck sales dropped 45% in October from a
year earlier, and said it is moving up its year-end sales promotion. Ford Motor
reported a 30% drop in U.S. vehicle sales for October, while Toyota's fell 23%.

Ohio SoS certainly is thorough at covering all the bases eh?

The exact number of dead voters is difficult to say this time because Ohio's Secretary of State issued a directive to Boards of Elections across the state to withhold dates of births in public records requests. That information is important in positively identifying dead voters.

They get to introduce a whole set of audacious ideas once communism is OK.

Ideas like "repressive tolerance" which will be used to justify using state power to control your speech so that "authentic" free speech may be promoted and preserved.

All out of the Marcuse playbook that SDS and the Weathermen ran with in the 60's.

The exact number of dead voters is difficult to say this time because Ohio's Secretary of State issued a directive to Boards of Elections across the state to withhold dates of births in public records requests. That information is important in positively identifying dead voters.

...how does a DOB identify a dead person?

That makes little to no sense.

Oh, I completely agree he was groomed. And it started waaaaaay before he got to Columbia or Chicago. I just wonder if there was a connection with his mom/grandparents/Ayers/Davis before they even moved to Hawaii.

I don't believe he was groomed in a deliberate way back then. I think he certainly grew up in an environment friendly to communism -- a red diaper baby, basically. When it really started, IMHO, was at Columbia. I believe he met Ayers there (when Ayers was studying at nearby Bank Street School) and Ayers recommended him for the job with this company tied to SDS. Maybe Dohrn made the actual recommendation, but that doesn't matter. The fact is, he has been lying like a rug about meeting Ayers in 1995 in Chicago. They met in 1981 or 1982 in NYC.

Traveled to Pakistan for 3 weeks.

BHO is the closest thing we've had to a 'manchurian candidate'. From the radical associates, to the morphing into the more practical 'work within the system' approach and poison the minds of the young by going into education 'reform' and community organizing. Wow. There are those in the MSM who seem to have woken up, but not enough.

The water is getting really hot now, and most of the frogs have been rendered too sleepy to jump out.

If anyone has done any serious reading about the patience of the communists, this ascendancy of BHO reads like a friggin script.

I take offense to the "we."

I hope McCain has learned something about the Left during this election cycle., that acting as the gentleman is not effective.

Yes he fell for the "let's all be nice" while they sucker punch him every chance they get. Typical far left "let's have a violent peace" theme.

Yesterday I was walking in Wal-Mart with a friend who was wearing a Sarah Palin shirt. A black woman was walking towards us when she stopped, looked at his shirt and stopped dead in her tracks and stared at both of us like we just kicked her dog. I started to sweat, thinking I was going to have to throw-down in Wal-Mart (how humiliating). Anyway, we kept walking and we were both aware that the woman turned around and watched us walk away. WTF? I can't believe the shit going on.

Good for you and her! I went with a friend last week, and filled out an absentee ballot and then voted. There were many reasons that qualified for voting early, one that I used was "job related". Guess that ended up being a good thing as my hours tomorrow would make it difficult to get back in time to vote.

183 harrylook  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 11:31:53am

So, I went to a party at a friend's house in NH over the weekend. Upon arrival, the hostess realized she had no rum and sent her husband and I to get it. During the ride, it's clear he wants to get something off his chest - "I don't like Obama." "Well, I'm certainly not voting for him!" I assure my friend. Back at the party, everone is pro-Obama, including my buddy! He gives me a look that says, "Not really - I just don't want to deal with the crap."

Also, though my pro-Obama friends are convinced NH is "heavily pro-Obama," the lawn signs tell a different story. I would estimate 70% McCain signs.

FWIW....

Comrades!

The counter revolutionary running dog imperial capitalist oligarchs of McSame may be delivering a crushing blow!

They have managed to pull even in Ohio and Missouri while pulling ahead in Florida and North Carolina! And McSame has gained in striking distance in Virginia and Colorado!

Take to the streets and stop the counter revolutionary reactionaries!

Remember -

* Don't bathe!
* Vote multiple times!
* Get in the faces of our opponents and threaten them with violence and loss of property if they do not vote for peace and tolerance!

Remember:

this is a contest between a skinny legged street thug and a naval aviator.

Well, it is a good thing that he won't vote for him. But is it not becoming a shame that in the land of the Free, people are afraid to truly speak their minds and beliefs in order to avoid public reprimands and hate comments from far left supporters who seem to gained control in every aspect of mainstream media and therefore control public opinion.

I find that very saddening.

I switched to FF from IE 2-3 months ago. I switched to Safari last week, when we were so bogged down. The difference with Safari and LGF is astounding. I highly endorse Safari for the coming trip through the Jungle. (pun intended)

Feb 28, 2008 ... Safari doesn't make PayPal's list of recommended browsers because it doesn't have two important anti-phishing security features.

Has this been fixed?

Written by another socialist America hater, John Lennon.

The only way to deal with bad news is to face it and not live in denial.

Anyone who really thinks McCain is going to pull this thing out should go put his money where his mouth is: I understand they're paying $6 for every $1 you bet on McCain winning. And I don't see many people taking those odds.

I strongly recommend the book 'Radical Son' by David Horowitz if you want to know all about the SDS and the weather underground. He was there at the beginning and knew all the major players well. [Link: www.amazon.com...]

I read that book many years ago - it's a GREAT read. "Hating Whitey" is also very good.

Wake up and smell the coffee!

For us spectators, sure. But optimism can exist in spite of realism. If one is involved in the fight, or communicates with someone in the fight, then the "rose-colored glasses" caution gives way to "don't anticipate the outcome of a fight." After all, what difference does it make? We have four years to smell coffee. Even "Hudson" as pessimistic as he was, didn't go down without a fight.

That's the we we need to play it through tomorrow night with the NObama supporters....we might piss and moan about how the deck is stacked against us, but when it comes down to brass tacks, we need to fight and not let up until it's really over.

To quote Hudson, "You want some of this? F**k you!"...that's the way to play it through tomorrow.
