Columbia Univ. Director Replies to Request for Khalidi Tape: ‘Yeah, Right … Loser’

An LGF reader contacted Columbia University (and a lot of other potential sources, including the LA Times) with a polite request that they help release the tape of Rashid Khalidi with Barack Obama (the video the Los Angeles Times has … unbelievably … decided to suppress during a hotly contested election):

From: [redacted]
To: [redacted]
Sent: Mon Oct 27 18:28:41 2008
Subject: Please release Khalidi’s 2003 tape

Dear Madam or Sir,

It has come to my attention that the LA Times in in possession of a tape recording a 2003 farewell party for Rashid Khalidi. In an article, the LA Times said:

“The event was videotaped, and a copy of the tape was obtained by The Times.”

This event was attended by Senator Barrack Obama. As this is an election period, as journalists, you have the moral obligation to release any and all information you possess about both candidates.

I would be grateful if you can release the videotape. It’s our right as Americans to learn about our candidates.

Cordially,
[redacted]

The outrageous response he received, from a director of Columbia University’s Business School:

Subject: Re: Please release Khalidi’s 2003 tape
Date: Tue, 28 Oct 2008 06:02:41 -0400
From: [redacted]
To: [redacted]

Yeah, right…loser

May be it is naivety but sometimes simple solution is not the worst one.
There are thousands viewers here.
Give the rest to your computer. Take the phone, call your friends, convince them simply go to vote and call their friends with the same message.
It takes only eight steps and a few hours to spread the message to all.
It could change turnout from 64(?)% to 84.
Call! The Country is at stake. Maybe - Civilization

See, I blame the distance and such from their history- many American Jews are so far removed from the immigrant experience, and the hate and violence that brought them to America.

My dad was an American Jew, and a proud Zionist. He saw no disconnect between the 2.

But he was not all up in the higher ed, and well, the Jews in THAT realm. . .are not like my family. We are blue collar, military serving, assimulated to some degree, but proud Zionist Jews. Being from Israel myself, its extremely upsetting the level of ignorance demonstrated by American Jews in their regard for Israel...I have a number of Jewish friends who could care less about the country. Judging from history, all of them are going to find out sooner or later that they can't abandon Israel and assimilate into society. Jews have never been able to assimilate into a particular culture, and its not about to start here. Hopefully they soon get their wake up call.

Allow me to coin a new acronym.

We never 'struggled" with the question of should Israel exist- just the question of how to support and protect her. . .

His excuse...he was on a Blackberry and in a rush...he really meant to say "I'm sorry, but I cannot do that, and we are all losers due to the tape's concealment" but just abbreviated it.

108 Alberta Oil Peon  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 5:20:30pm

Seems to me it would be a good idea to contact prominent Alumni of the Columbia MBA program, advise them of this nasty behavior by one of the school's officials, and remind them that such behavior may adversely affect their employability in future, as it devalues the Columbia degree in the eyes of many potential employers.

It's not clear to me that snarky Sidney had any leverage at all to get the L.A. Times to release the tape. All he really needed to say was, "Sorry, I don't have any influence there."

These psychos have made Obama into what George Washington refused to be. "The One". "Messiah". In all seriousness, these terms are obscenities in the face of the only thing that has really brought hope and change in the history of the world: The idea of a representative Democracy "of the people, by the people, and for the people"; People who have inalienable rights. No people ever even tried to do this before the United States. Obama, and all those who support him, want to destroy it, because they do not really want to see a thriving middle class who has the capability of achieving anything.

Obama Lays Plans to Kill Expectations After Election Victory; by Tim Reid, The Times of London: “Confident in an Election Day win, the campaign looks to lower supporters' expectations on concerns their hopes of 'change' are unrealistic, a senior aide says “Barack Obama’s senior advisers have drawn up plans to lower expectations for his presidency if he wins next week’s election, amid concerns that many of his euphoric supporters are harbouring unrealistic hopes of what he can achieve.” “One senior adviser told The Times that the first few weeks of the transition, imediately after the election, were critical, “so there’s not a vast mood swing from exhilaration and euphoria to despair”

Uh oh, Obama supporters still have to pay for gas and their mortgages. They aren't gonna like that. Hey, I bet they don't even know he won't actually be President till January 20th.

Ayers, apparently still proud of his bombings in 2004:

Spending a weekend with an accused domestic terrorist shows what kind of guy he is:

Back in the winter of 2004, I spent a weekend crashing at Ayers’ house. ..

...The whole weekend was a political awakening for me, and I began to understand just exactly whose house I was staying in. Ayers drove us all over Chicago — he showed us the statue in Haymarket Square that he bombed in 1969. The city rebuilt the statue in May 1970, and he bombed it again six months later. The statue was dedicated to fallen police officers who were killed during a clash with labor supporters during the 1886 Haymarket riot...

What ever happened to the grown-ups?

So far today, I've dealt with attacks from people almost as old as my parents, calling Republicans "scum," me a racist hatemonger, and a "christian freakshow."

Just when I was about to throw in the towel, I noticed that the calendar hanging in the dry cleaner's shop featured Norman Rockwell prints of kids. I flipped through it and thought about the way life used to be, when my parents were kids, when nobody thought it would kill a kid to have them pump and carry water, or to fish, or play outside with (GASP) nothing more than a ball to entertain themselves.

My dry cleaner is Korean. I have probably posted here before, but he is the best American I know. Good product, fair price, service with a smile.

I refuse to believe that all is lost as long as we can still remember a better time (maybe not wealthier, but better). We may have to count out the older jackass baby boomers like Exhibit A here as a lost cause, but the younger generation can still grow up, learn some civility, and take responsibility for their own lives. I suggest we focus on them. I'm not going to stay quiet any more.

A cheerful take from one of instapundit's readers: I pretty much concur.

Trouble is – when the evil folk who earn more than $250K fail to provide the necessary dollars to fulfill the dreams of The One, the sliding scale of evil will appear. Soon, those who earn $175K and then those who earn $105K will be identified as evil and have their property confiscated.

The story is always the same. The socialist/communist/fascist state destroys the productivity of the middle class, confiscates the fruit of their labor and enforces a two class system – the many (who labor to support the State), and the few – The One, his family and his chosen disciples (who enjoy the power, status and wealth that the State provides).

There is no such thing as simply slowing down and enjoying the dole.

The thief comes to kill and steal and destroy. That’s it.

A good demonstration of the quality of marketing and interpersonal communications you can expect from Columbia.

My kids all have a large college fund, courtesy of relatives. No F'N way I let them spend it at an Ivy League school, or at a Cal university. Another problem with such organizations, besides their personal loyalty to their founder, is that they often get ideas of their own, overthrow the old leader, and start installing new leaders willy-nilly all by themselves.

The Roman Praetorian Guard is a prime example.

Yeah, it was, but it is worth repeating.

I've spoken to black Dems like this woman - they are incredibly credulous. The Dems, and excuse me for being non-PC, are the Big Pimp Daddy - all good flows therefrom.

Example - I had a discussion on tax when I bought cigs. I mentioned that the cig tax had been raised to two bucks per pack. She said something that made me ask "you do know who raises taxes, right?" She smiled and said Republicans - as if she expected me to pin a rose on her. I explained that the state reps AND the gov. are Dems and that they raised the tax. She looked pained and then said "But - I'm a Democrat!" I said "So am I." (The fact that I'm a Dem is my ace in the hole in these little discussions). It is NOT that she is in any way stupid - she lives in the Peoples' Republic of Maryland and is totally brainwashed. Well, not totally, if I had any impact.

So, if you know a Columbia U grad, alum, or current student, let them and their parents know what kind of institution they're dealing with. This is the same institution that runs the Columbia Journalism School, and which happens to administer the Pulitzer Prize.

Your standard response when getting calls from their alumni department asking for donations or other solicitations should be short, sweet, and to the point.

Yeah, right. Loser.

If they get all uptight, refer them here to this email response. Tell them that the incredible unprofessional attitude of the Director speaks volumes as to the integrity and professionalism of the university, which is to say that it stinks (and that's putting it mildly).

Back in the winter of 2004, I spent a weekend crashing at Ayers’ house. ..

First, I'm unclear why he's writing to the Business School at Columbia to demand that they "as journalists" release the tape.

Third, I take issue with Shouman's insinuation that the people have a 'right' to the videotape. He couches it in language about learning about candidates, but it's clear what he means. To which I say: No. You don't have a 'right' to that tape. Just like many other people don't have 'rights' they claim every day. 267 unrealizedviewpoint  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 5:47:55pm

new arrival to my inbox:

'Twas the night before elections
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!

I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political crap.

When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!

He snatched up my money
And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink

He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!

"On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi"
He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
On this one final note -
If you don't want socialism
Get out and vote!

re: #192 DisturbedEma

I blame the lack of knowledge about history, if more Jews read David Wyman, they would vote differently. . .

Ehh...I really don't know. Perhaps it could be a fault of the parents for not educating their children about Jewish history?

My parents both grew up in Soviet Russia, and they left in '89 for Hungary (as well as my Dads brother) the first chance they got. Once in Budapest, my parents and my dads brother and his family had a choice - go to Israel, or go to the United States. My parents knew hardly anything about Israel, but they went anyway - perhaps because of a desire to be amongst their own [my mother experienced a lot of antisemitism growing up in Russia]). My dad's brother decided to go to Cleveland...

Flash forward 20 years: My dads brothers family are...stinking liberals. They pretend to give a shit about Israel...but they really don't. Its reflected in their son (my cousin). I talk to him and he admits to not paying any attention to Israel or how an Obama presidency would affect Israel...very upsetting.

There's hardly ever a reason to respond to someone saying "Yeah, right... loser," unless that person is offering to cut you in on a fabulous but secretive opportunity to aid his uncle, the crown prince of Nigeria.

There are a couple of odd things about this email, though. I'm sure Shouman, as a poster here, can help me understand them.

First, I'm unclear why he's writing to the Business School at Columbia to demand that they "as journalists" release the tape.

Second, I'm unsure that the Columbia guy's response was necessarily sent to Shouman. Notice which email addresses are redacted.

Third, I take issue with Shouman's insinuation that the people have a 'right' to the videotape. He couches it in language about learning about candidates, but it's clear what he means. To which I say: No. You don't have a 'right' to that tape. Just like many other people don't have 'rights' they claim every day. What you have is a right to cancel your subscription to the LA Times, or to refuse to send your child to Columbia.

And lastly: If the LA Times doesn't truly have a deal in place with their source, they should give up the tape immediately or be punished with widespread subscription cancellations.

Ooookkkaaayyy. . .

I see now how misguided I was in thinking that Columbia would be at all interested in this guy's party with the who's who of left wing assorted nuts. . .

Thanks so much for setting me straight. . .sheesh

Following the link provided by Mark up-thread, I composed a polite e-mail, and sent it Sidney Jackson, suggesting I would use what little influence I may have with my contacts in the oil industry against their hiring MBAs from Columbia. My influence is pretty damn microscopic, but hopefully he will come to realize that there may be others out there who do have serious influence, and these people are not amused.

And if it subsequently proves that Mr. Jackson did not in fact write that snarky e-mail, well then, I guess I will have to apologize. I'm pretty certain, though, that our host has done his due diligence.

New at zomblog:

Berkeley, land of happy T-shirts

At a pro-Obama event in Berkeley a few days ago, I spotted these two T-shirts:

[pic]
Here’s a woman showing her love for Fallujah, the one-time Al Qaeda stronghold in Iraq. And if you think she’s showing her support for the new democratic pacified Fallujah, dream on. I’m quite sure the shirt is a souvenir from 2004, when siding with the “insurgents” in Fallujah against American troops was de rigeuer in Berkeley.

[pic]
Here she is paying a visit to the “Department of Peace” booth set up by some Obama supporters.

[pic]
A couple minutes later, leaving the event, I ran into this guy with his “Defend Oakland” shirt featuring a sub-machine gun. And no, he’s not talking about defending it from criminals — he’s talking about defending it from the police. The slogan and and the concept are left over from the Black Panther era.

OT - Anyone able to translate this?

One thing about The Doofus- when he's not blabbing things to prove he's The Smartest Guy In The Room, he is talking gibberish.

Apparently, he never learned the principle of,

"If you can't think of anything intelligent to say, shut up."

Or else, he thinks he's so brilliant that he believes everything he says should be recorded for posterity. (Rather like Nero having scribes follow him around to record his brilliant insights on any and all subjects, even or especially when he was drunk.)

And it seems to be rubbing off on The One, as in his remark this morning about McCain being GWB's "sidekick", "Like Kato was with the Green Lantern."

My guess is, you don't have to be a total comic-book geek (like I was OUAT) to spot this one- anyone who remembers Bruce Lee would point out that Kato was the Green Hornet's partner.

Now imagine The One or The Doofus saying something this wonky in a summit meeting.

/Other world leaders looking at them and wondering, "What the H**l were the Americans thinking?"- except for the likes of Ahmedinejad and Chavez, who would be enjoying visions of world hegemony

cheers

Treasury submits to Shariah

The U.S. Treasury Department is submitting to Shariah - the seditious religio-political-legal code authoritative Islam seeks to impose worldwide under a global theocracy.

As reported in this space last week, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Robert Kimmitt set the stage with his recent visit to Saudi Arabia and other oil-rich Persian Gulf states. His stated purpose was to promote the recycling of petrodollars in the form of foreign investment here.

Evidently, the price demanded by his hosts is that the U.S. government get with the Islamist financial program. While in Riyadh, Mr. Kimmitt announced: "The U.S. government is currently studying the salient features of Islamic banking to ascertain how far it could be useful in fighting the ongoing world economic crisis."

"Islamic banking" is a euphemism for a practice better known as "Shariah-Compliant Finance (SFC)." And it turns out that this week the Treasury will be taking officials from various federal agencies literally to school on SFC.

The department is hosting a half-day course entitled "Islamic Finance 101" on Thursday at its headquarters building. Treasury's self-described "seminar for the policy community" is co-sponsored with the leading academic promoters of Shariah and SCF in the United States: Harvard University Law School's Project on Islamic Finance. At the very least, the U.S. government evidently hopes to emulate Harvard's success in securing immense amounts of Wahhabi money in exchange for conforming to the Islamists' agenda. Like Harvard, Treasury seems utterly disinterested in what Shariah actually is, and portends.

/pretty soon you're not going to be able to recognize this country

Might as well die like a ram, rather than dying like a lamb.

...or a really ticked off ewe.

Made me think of Italian hero Fabrizio Quattrocchi.

How an Italian Dies.

Captured along with three other Italians working in Iraq as private security guards, then murdered by terrorists in April of 2004, Fabrizio Quattrocchi ruined the video his executioners were recording. Instead of allowing himself to be put to death cowering like a sheep, Quattrocchi pulled the hood from his face, faced the video camera, and said defiantly: Adesso (or ora) vi faccio vedere come muore un italiano! [Now I will show you how an Italian dies!].

He was shot in the back of the neck, but Al Jazeera never broadcast the video, claiming hypocritically that it was “too gruesome.”

As our 26th President (the Oyster Bay Roosevelt) on April 27, 1908 in a special mesage to Congress:

"Every farsighted patriot should protest first of all against the growth in this country of that evil thing which is called 'class consciousness.' The demagogues, the sinister or foolish socialist visionary who strives to arouse this feeling of class consciousness in our working people, does a foul and evil thing; for he is no true American, he is no self-respecting citizen of this Republic."

I like Frank Luntz, but not as a guy. The focus groups are important when you are trying and figure out how to sell an idea or campaign issue to select groups of voters. I don't think it is an exact science, but the dial-meter just graphically represents how people respond to certain issues. IMO, that info is valuable to a campaign.

Found this today at Grouchy Old Cripple

Remember, remember, this fourth of November,
The radicals’ treasonous plot.
I know of no reason the radicals’ treason
Should e’er be forgiv’n or forgot.
The Sixties were waning, and Leftists were claiming
That radical changes were due.
Their Marxist solution was armed revolution:
The Weathermen made their debut.
The radicals raged on the national stage, and
Horrific explosions ensued.
Their bombs were dramatic, but also erratic;
They sometimes killed radicals, too.
The Leftists grew older, the underground, colder,
And so they came in from the cold.
“Subvert from within – in the long run, we’ll win,” said
The Leftists, determined and bold.
And thus it began – this nefarious plan – and
The radicals slowly took charge:
Complete infiltration of all education;
The long institutional march.
The journalist schools would produce useful fools, for
The Left would need media shills.
And Hollywood, too, would assist in the coup, with
Its slick propagandizing skills.
“Community action” would build a new faction;
’Twould organize proles on the street.
A smooth politician would front for the mission,
And run for the president’s seat.
The radicals’ goal, which they proudly extol, is
A communist U.S. of A.
Collectivist schemes lead to brutal regimes, and
For this do the radicals pray.
But Jefferson’s aim, with the Charters he framed, was
To guard individual rights.
And “redistribution” was not a solution,
But one of the evils to fight.
So let us remember, this fourth of November,
Just what is at stake on this date.
Will Jefferson’s dream, or the radicals’ scheme, now
Determine America’s fate?

Hat tip to Denny and long timer Rob.
If it has been posted already, Sorry, it needs to be seen.
An excellent poem.

ciaospirit (#349),

Tampering with the mail is a Federal offense.

When I was working at the post office I saw a station manager go ape-shit crazy on a carrier when he found out that he wasn't taking mail to the top stories of an apartment building the day before the T7 had his route so he wouldn't have to climb stairs one day a week.

Not to worry.

My postal carrier got his route as punishment I think. he is infamous for delivering any type of junk mail or old resident mail. And somehow the post office behind him fails to deliver legal documents and returns them to sender constantly.Complaints to the postmaster do nothing. I suspect it makes matters worse. I get absentee ballots for 3 previous residents. I always mark them "no longer living here" and return them. They always appear before an election. It's a big system of rules that can't be beat by the average Joe.

I know -- I just don't trust Google to have updated staff rosters. I was searching Columbia's faculty directory.

re: #244 Cognito

Issue#1- addressed by Charles, no further mystery.
Issue#2- I don't kow anything about email and its tags. I do know that about once a year I get an email that was distinctly not meant for me, making derogatory comments about whatever the issue is at hand (sometimes me). However, it seems that Charles has seen the string so I trust that if that were the case, he would've posted it and that would be what we're discussing.
Issue#3- This is where all the debate will reside. I see an intersection between private property and the public's "right to know" (which I'm not convinced is a legal term). I certainly feel we have a "right" to see it, but there may be lots of legal precedent that does not agree with me and I am not a lawyer.
Issue#4-Economic sanctions are sometimes all we got. Industrywide, they seemto be working lately.

Karl Rove just posted a map giving the election to Obama. Bastard

Give him some credit. He's a journalist, of a sort, now - and that's what the polls say.

But - as was explained a few days ago on a previous thread - the polls are not to be trusted.

So, OTOH, you'd think he would have first-hand knowledge of the fantasy world of polls. Is FOXNews getting worried about getting cut out of White House coverage if Obama succeeds tomorrow? They're the least biased, but they're not untouchable.

AND

He wants to reimpose inheritance tax.
He wants to raise cap gains tax.
He wants to tax homes that are more than 2400 square feet.

This is a mindset that is just utterly foreign to me. If you are going to go out, go out with a BANG. Take as many of the bastards as you can with you. I mean, if you are gonna die, then there isn't a whole lot left that they can use to deter you.

Might as well die like a ram, rather than dying like a lamb.

Absolutely. The only caveat is the vain hope of preserving the lives of your children for just another day. That's strong. Other than that fighting for yourself, your dignity, even just trying to, is preferable to sheepish compliance.

I don't expect but a few to really understand that. Fewer still to live, and if fate decrees, die by that.

I have said that I am very proud that I, and mine, have kept faith with the men who stood at Thermopylae. Most folks think of that as romantic, empty rhetoric. It is not. You know of what I speak. It's in you. That's why I like you. That's why we don't, can't, understand sheep. I'm just starting to realize that I'm not a kid anymore, but I'm still a belligerent sonofabitch, and believe that a man, even an old enfeebled man, ought to succumb, but never surrender. As far as the media are concerned, any thing with a detachable magazine is an assault rifle. In 1917, the Assault rifle weighed thirteen pouns with a seventeen inch bayonet. In 1863, it was a single shot trap door Sharps. In 1812 it was a rifled barrel and a ramrod.
Assault Rifle is a loose term but unfortunately the media uses it like a cuss word.

What has been the most fascinating thing about this presidential race to me is how it has managed to out the elites and separate them from everyday Americans - on both sides of the political aisle, but most notably on the GOP side.

Peggy Noonan, Kathleen Parker, Christopher Buckley, David Frum, David Brooks . . . the list goes on.

I give full credit to Sarah Palin for doing this for the GOP. Now we know who the fair-weather friends of conservatism are.

Arab Paper: ‘Obama’s Historic Intifada’ Allows Islam to ‘Impose its Point of [View]

From Beirut, Chawki Freiha reports* on a provocative editorial that appeared in the Al Quds Al Arabi newspaper on November 3 written by Abdelbari Atwan, the first journalist to have met with Osama bin Laden. Titled “Obama’s Historic Intifada,” Atwan praises the probable election of Barack Obama to the White House and claims that with Obama installed in Washington, Islam will be able to “impose its point of view” on the world.

As to be expected, Atwan’s editorial decries the Bush administration because it is “controlled by Zionists… whose objective is to destroy the Arab world and Islam.” Displaying true Muslim conspiratorial thinking, Atwan further claims that all Middle Eastern countries have been under the control Israel, even though the Arabs have the “largest wealth” in the world in petrodollars.

The most alarming part of Atwan’s editorial, however, is that he imagines that with a President Obama in office, Islam will be able to use its oil wealth to control the world.

/so, we've got that to look forward to too

As far as the media are concerned, any thing with a detachable magazine is an assault rifle. In 1917, the Assault rifle weighed thirteen pouns with a seventeen inch bayonet. In 1863, it was a single shot trap door Sharps. In 1812 it was a rifled barrel and a ramrod.
Assault Rifle is a loose term but unfortunately the media uses it like a cuss word.

Lastly, we should make at least some psychological preparations for an Obama win. We have done almost all we can at this point online. The only thing left to do is get our supporters to the polls tomorrow and pray.

Regardless of what happens, I am comforted by the fact that my state will go for McCain. I am a self-reliant person--ironically, a possible Obama administration will be a lot harder on the helpless underclass than it is on me.

I am NOT comforted that the nearest gun show after the election is 216 freaking miles away. Gun show guns are only going to get more expensive as the inevitable day comes when that loophole is closed.

Regardless, my conscience is clear, whatever happens. If Obama wins, the country has faced bigger challenges.

I still think McCain's going to win.

Kinda like a "sawed-off" shotgun. They are going for what sounds scary. An 18" barrel gives you longer range, while shorter is handier for CQC. Or, for that matter, home defense.

Like with all gun control laws, they only apply to the law abiding anyway.

well, the other thing that the "assault" weapons scam did was sell the weapons as more powerful that they were. I once got in an argument with a guy from LA on whether a Tec-9 was more powerful than a Beretta 9mm. He insisted that the Tec-9 was an "assault weapon" and was therefore more powerful. Of course the truth is they fire the same bulletts from the same length barrel, so they are about equal. But the Beretta is more concealable.

Go figure.

Beretta had a nice offering some years ago that had a three round burst mode. Marketed to the military but never adopted except possibly by SF.

re: #536 summergurl

This is a historic election when you consider that an African-American is running at the top of the ticket for the left. I would argue that white conservatives would decline to be part of a poll than possibly be viewed as a racist for not voting for BO.

The question is as well to what degree 0bama energizing the black electorate will make any significant difference to the outcome. Most black folks were going to vote Democrat anyway. We know there are at least some PUMA Democrats that are motivated the other way (and likely some Democrat voters that would otherwise vote for the ticket, except that they're turned off for other reasons, including race).

Keep in mind that up until this election, McCain was a media darling. One of the MSM's favorite Republicans. Attractive to independents, presumably. Some residual effect of those years and years of MSM promotion of McCain is out there in the general population. By contrast, 0bama's been overexposed by the MSM, in terms of publicity, but nobody really knows what he's about, other than HopeyChanginess.

McCain has neutralized much of the conservative Republican criticism (that would have otherwise doomed him) with his selection of Palin, who comes across as a real person, rather than a polished slick politician (contrast with 0bama, who's slick like Bill Clinton, albeit seemingly somewhat more "authentic").

The V.P. picks tell a lot about the candidates, actually. 0bama picked Biden out of his own insecurity. McCain's doubtless glad to add some star power to his campaign, and isn't afraid of being outshone.

re: #636 OldLineTexan

No, "assault rifle" does have an actual definition, it was invented by the Germans in WW2 (sturmgewehr, as in StG44).

"Assault weapon" is an invented term coined for the express purpose of making the American public believe that all ugly black rifles are actually "machine guns".

True. The term was invented to allow the left to deprive Americans of their rights. Most leftist terms were invented to do that.

I thought it was to enforce UN Resolution 1441?

Well, I simplified our conversation. We were aware of the legal basis in their violation of the 1991 cease-fire, and the official list of reasons included in Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002. He made a sweeping summary that it was really mostly about WMD's and I made one that it was largely because of the increased activities of terrorist as indicated by 911. Otherwise, why did their violation of the cease-fire conditions suddenly become important as they had never complied with them in over a decade? And if they were not supporters of terrorists, why so concerned about WMD's? India, Pakistan, etc. Anyway, I felt that Bill was just jumping on the big, loud, WMD wagon, beating the drum like the rest of the media.

Sub machine gun denotes that the weapon is pistol caliber. Thus the M1 carbine was not a submachine gun but instead an assault rifle.

The M1 carbine was semiautomatic. The straight-walled .30 cartridge with its 110gr bullet is basically a magnum pistol round.

The M2 carbine was select-fire.

Lying. Confirmed today in an article that quoted someone in the Obama campaign as saying that both the campaign (specifically, David Axelrod) and (shocka!) MA Gov.

Go figure.

I hear ya. Some people won't take tellin'. Had a co-worker same way.

F=MA^2

Tried to no avail to get through that it's all about the caliber and bbl length...well...and powder, and bullet weight, too. In his mind, Dirty Harry shoulda' had a "9" instead of that cheesy .44M because a "9" was sooo powerful.

I'd bet dollars to donuts more than 1/2 of the media types looking at a 7400 in .30-06 beside a gussied up M4 would pick the M4 as the "more powerful" weapon.

Media clods.

Semi OT, Had a Tec-9 semi pre-ban. Couldn't empty a mag without a couple FTF's. FMJ's, HP's, didn't matter. Nice to look at but don't buy 'em to look at 'em. Horse traded that for a GP100 KGP160 w/Hogue pebbles.

Kaixo!

I wonder why John McCain has waited so long to go vigorously after Barack O. on his relationships with Bill and Bernadine Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, William Pfleger, Tony Rezco, Khalidi, et cetera. His decision to be a "Mr. Nice Guy" very well may have cost him the election. It is nothing short of astounding that a man of Obama's thin resume' and long history of associating with radicals, thugs and crooks should be even running for president, let alone being the overwhelming favorite to win. Of course, it is easy to discern the major reason why-the current state of the electorate is so dismal-the "dumbing down" of education (the current crop of college graduates scores below high school graduates of the 1940's in history of the United States and of the world) and by far the majority of college professors are left-wing zealots, and of course the media are but a cheerleading section for the Democratic party. (The Democrats are not the Dems of the Roosevelt, Truman, JFK, Scoop Jackson, Daniel Moynihan brand, but of the Jimmy Carter, Teddy Kennedy, etc. variety descended from the far-left wackos of the '60s).

On another matter: I have noticed that some of the bloggers have been using obscene, crude, vulgar epithets; this is entirely unnecessary and is quite offensive. The gratuitous use of profanity and vulgarity merely indicates that the writer lacks the requisite vocabulary to express himself/herself in an intelligent manner without resorting to the type of communication employed by the DailyKoz and Huffington Post types. We are better than that!

whose side is Peace Now on?

Peace Now defends PLO spokesman Khalidi

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 31, 2008
CONTACT: Ori Nir - (202) 728-1893

Washington, D.C. – Americans for Peace Now (APN) abhors and rejects the current character assassination efforts aimed at Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi.

Dr. Khalidi is a respected scholar, author and educator. Contrary to the allegations contained in these attacks, Dr. Khalidi is a longtime public supporter of Israeli-Palestinian peace and the two-state solution, and an opponent of violence and terror. His analysis has helped the world better understand the Palestinian historical and political narrative – understanding that is a requirement for the achievement of Israeli-Arab peace – and has underscored both the challenges and the opportunities that exist for advancing a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Last month APN called on both candidates and campaigns to keep Israel and the peace process out of any partisan rhetoric in the race for the White House. We noted that "during U.S. elections there are often people both inside and outside the presidential campaigns who want to play politics with the issue – using Israel to score political points for themselves or against their opponent." We warned that doing so represented "a cynical tactic that comes at the expense of the best interests of both the U.S. and Israel."

This latest smear campaign against Professor Khalidi is exactly the kind of tactic we warned against.

APN is a non-partisan, Jewish, Zionist organization dedicated to enhancing Israel's security through peace and to supporting the Israeli Peace Now movement.

re: #523 Charles

Dick Morris has provided insightful analysis on the meaning behind the numbers and trends.

Frank Luntz is a gimmick and proved to be less useful in understanding anything of relevance.

Pat Buchanan is an embittered man with a minimal historic relevance to the GOP. He also happens to be a useful shill for MSNBC not Fox.

Mike Huckabee demonstrates the National attachment to faith and values and his flat or fair tax approach is of interest. He also puts his own capital on the line which is somewhat refreshing.

I think maybe the trending has turned you askew...maybe just a little.

I am unsure of who or what is a cause to discredit, but thinking people can filter fact from fiction albeit difficult at times. This site can be alluded to this way as well by many, but an impartial view can discern the value in this forum and I have always found the reasonable diversity refreshing.

re: #689 bitterclinger_in_PA

Hey I am one of those bitter clingers in Pennsylvania. I got to tell you that PA will go McCain. I know being a member of mega evangelical church in PA there is enormous support for the McCain. The abortion issue is huge and we bitter clingers are not taking this botched abortion issue sitting down. It is unbelievable extreme and immoral. We had played a video in church about what this radical will do with abortion rights. I know many churchs have done this across the country this past Sunday. The polls will not reflect this at all because it was done this Sunday. Along with the GOPTrust 527 who is targeting PA with that crazy preacher jeremiah wright, PA is going to McCain. I am telling you all that tens of thousands of evangelicals in PA are mobilizing tonight. I have heard similar things in Ohio, West Virginia, VA, and Fl. Vote your conscience. No Christian should be voting for this Pro abortionist.

Thank you.

Like the Bren Gun or the hardy B.A.R.

And just to confuse things further, "submachine guns" are often referred to by Brits and Euros as "machine pistols," per the ammunition they use. Whereas here, the latter term generally designates a full-automatic handgun like the Beretta 93-R.

well at least south Philly might go for McCain.

Ol, I have businesses in Philly right on the the most liberal campus UOP and the burbs. I don't see support to elect this marxist. I belong to a church who is affiliated to a church in Philly. They have over 10000 members and they hate OBAMA for this abortion thing. It is a very diverse church. Abortion will turn this election in PA in the evangelical church.

Do not listen to the polls. McCain will win because of evangelicals! I have never seen evangelicals more enthused and motivated in every state.

re: #711 summergurl

You and I are on the same page. I do not believe the polls to be accurate becuase they are not capturing the vote of those who distrust BO lest they be described as racist. if it was an all white race people would be more forthcoming, but its not.

This contest is sui generis. We're going to have a Senator elected President for the first time in about a half-century. We've got the first African American major party candidate on the Democrat side, and only the second female V.P. candidate in almost thirty years (the first female Republican V.P. candidate), following the first Presidential run by a female major party candidate ever (correct me if I'm wrong).

We've been going through a tremendous fiscal disruption, and both the incumbent President and Congressional leadership are so unpopular they don't really want to get too close to their respective party's candidate lest their record unpopularity is contagious. (Remember that? They're both unpopular.)

We've got massive organized voter registration fraud in ACORN, unprecedented levels of campaign spending, and prominent members of both parties publicly switching allegiances. And a MSM that refuses to vet one of the candidates, while acting as essentially the arm of that candidates' campaign. WTF?

I could go on, but I don't see how reference to past campaigns is even going to help you here.

Sadly, the BATF doesn't make their rulings based on the home defense value of a weapon.

I'm told that a Class III license for a suppressor really isn't all that hard to get (assuming you live in an otherwise gun-friendly jurisdiction).

765 OldLineTexan  Mon, Nov 3, 2008 7:20:20pm

re: #756 Iron Fist

I'd heard that about a TEC-9, but I've never shot one. What's really sweet is an H&K MP-5. Put a hush on it, and you have the best home-defense weapon on the market. Sadly, the BATF doesn't make their rulings based on the home defense value of a weapon.

And legal full-auto is just completely out of my price range. It's fun, but it isn't really that big an advantage.

TEC-9 is a hunk of junk, but the TEC-22 was a neat weapon. Wish I had bought one back when they were cheap.

re: #349 ciaospirit

I voted absentee by mail. Now I'm worried my vote is going to end up "lost." Has anyone ever followed up on their vote to see if it was counted?

I voted absentee by mail this year for the Alaska primary and tomorrow's election as well. Alaska has a website that tracks your ballot pretty much like UPS might do with a parcel. I tell the website my voter number and one of the identifier numbers (last 4 of SSN, Drivers License #, couple of other possibilities).

Then the website gives the date I requested the ballot, the date they mailed it to me, the date they received the ballot from me, and the date that it was counted. Says my ballot was received Oct 30 ;-). Hopefully your state has some way you can check online.

Don't know if this is unique to Alaska or not -- but they've got a really interesting option I've never noticed before. If you have not received your absentee ballot in time to vote, you are allowed to vote by FAX. Kinda defeats the "ballot privacy" option, but hey, if there's no other way to get your vote there in time ... So if you're a traveling lizard away from home, check your home state if need be, and see if there's a way your vote for Palin/McCain can't still get there in time ;-).

I've used it at the shooting range, and it is very accurate with almost no recoil.

Rustler here. From what i read of bidens comment girl-girl=girly girl ie plays with dolls plays house etc. girl-boy = tom boy, ie wants to play baseball with the boys etc. I only see it as maybe girly-girls who look more for a man to support them are stronger for obama/biden while tomboys who more want to do it on there own are less strong for the ONE. Allthough its just how i interpreted his comments these arent my own beleifs.

792 rancher  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 2:21:22am

Colt defender is a nice handgun for smaller women. Its a .45 acp but well designed and as a carry model its not the huge old beast. Its meant to fit in a handbags etc and at 22.5 oz empty is one of the lightest available .45's. The ergo grip on it is fairly comfortable and the stopping power of a .45 is incredible. The 7 round capacity limits it as an offensive weapon but its still quite nice as a home defense weapon and extremely fun to shoot. the action on it is smooth and recoil is minimal(although it may just be thats the recoil is smoother) compared to other larger heavier .45's I've shot.

793 rancher  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 2:23:37am

Only problem I have with the Defender is my hands swallow it, which is why I say more for women or men with smaller hands.

It is not just Columbia but academically they are “unhinged”

…so my sons’ college “literacy” teacher (this is a High School in Denver, South West Early College) asks her students for examples of love…then asks, "Who loves unconditionally?"

Student 1: Your parents
Student 2: Sarah Palin
Teacher: Sarah Palin does not love anyone unconditionally not even her own children. It may seem like love this year but next year when you have no water...
Student 3: I'll survive

WTF?

I’ve instructed my children to start keeping track of this…garbage.
