18 doppelganglander  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 8:03:10am

Checking in from deep red suburban Atlanta. Our polling place had a wait of less than 5 minutes shortly after 10 a.m.. They moved the machines from their usual place in the school library to the larger multi-purpose room (i.e. the gym). About 12 machines, all in use, with perhaps 4 or 5 people waiting. I live less than 5 miles from two of the early voting locations that were clocking wait times of 2 hours or more last week. I think that kept the wait times in the precinct very low.

McCain/Palin from Mississippi.....

Please lets have a Dewey Truman night!

21 Last Mohican  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 8:03:25am

It was a gorgeous, cloudless, unseasonably warm, springlike day at the polls in Massachusetts today. Bustling, but no lines, and no waiting. Signs said "you may be asked to show photo ID," but not a single person was asked to do so. As usual. I could have voted at least five times if I had wanted to.

Why do people have to show their photo ID when picking up their will call tickets at the baseball stadium, but not when they vote?

22 RedWhiteAndJew  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 8:03:28am

I pray that He keeps our foundations and the strength at the base of our pillar, our children, safe and sound under the values with which we were founded.

I pray that He is with us on this day, and I pray that He is with all of you. I pray that He helps us, as we are on the precipice of what is the most significant election in world history.

Just got back from casting my vote for McCain/Palin!

Walked the two blocks to my voter location at a local Baptist church; there were 5 voter stands where you could use paper ballots, and one little kiosk with the electronic voting machine. Nothing close to a line.

We walked in, I approached the table (which is divided by first letter of last name), showed my driver's license, signed my name, and was given the paper ballot to vote (it's way faster than the one electronic machine) and I was done. :)

By 9:30 AM, they'd only had around 150 voters. I love my little city.

Kona coffee IS the real deal. Make it the official LGF drink I say.

Sorry, too watery-tasting for me. Sumatran, Indian or Mexican, roasted just the far side of second crack and infused in a French press. Or Ethiopian, lightly roasted, for Turkish.

I drink a lot of coffee.

I voted! I brought a book (Anathem), read one page, stepped right up. Colored in those bubbles, yes sir I did. My favorite part is the electronic box gizmo; you can feed in the sheet any of the four ways; up, down, forwards, backwards, it'll read them all. It'd be cool to make the sheet square, extend to eight ways.

Mandy, are you that young, I pictured you my age due to your wisdom!
I lived through that Cold War nightmare. My rectal sphincter does not function correctly to this day, as a result of it.

I remember a bit of it. I know that my dad was never home--he flew sub-hunters and those planes out of Newfoundland that flew to the edges of Soviet airspace and got pinged by the Red Menace's radar.

100 Kenneth  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 8:15:20am

Quoted in whole, because it's so good:

My hopes and fears
By TigerHawk

I hope that John McCain wins tonight. If he does, I fear that his victory comes in a slim Electoral College majority hinged on narrow results in a single state. We should all pray that Ohio is not "Florida" with race thrown in.

I fear that the Democrats build their majority in the US Senate to 60. I hope that if that happens Lieberman switches parties. That would be extremely poetic.

I hope that the Obama/Pelosi/Reid gov't is not as bad for business & good for lawyers as I fear it will be.

I hope that Obama does not mean what he says about corporate executives. If so, I fear that he will enact Barney Frank's various proposals to make my professional life miserable.

I fear that we will be overrun by lawyers. A dominating Democratic majority will not only result in massive benefits to lawyers of all sorts -- trial lawyers, labor lawyers, & regulatory lawyers in the fore -- but it will mark the return of the cognitive style of lawyers to the White House and cabinet. This is especially troubling in the conduct of foreign policy.

I fear that Obama means what he says about energy policy, because if he succeeds in enacting the program he has proposed, Americans will not live nearly so well for a generation or more. But our grandchildren should be able to eat Adirondack fish, so that will be an upside.

I hope & fear that Obama has destroyed campaign finance regulation in this country for a generation. I hope it, because the McCain-Feingold law ought to be struck down as an unconstitutional. I fear it, because we have learned from the Obama campaign's exploitation of the small donor loophole that current law has destroyed transparency in campaign finance. That allows foreigners to finance American elections without Americans knowing it.

I hope, if Obama wins, that we do enjoy some significant change in race relations in this country. Many conservatives argue that the result will likely be the opposite, but I do not agree. I hope that an Obama White House will realize that its best political interest lies in vocally denying that race is the cause of this, that, or the other social problem. Of course, I fear the opposite.

I fear we will learn who Obama's friends are. Who will be the Webster Hubbell & Vince Foster of the Obama administration?

I hope that Americans come to understand that David Axelrod is Karl Rove on speed.

I fear that Joe Biden is right in his prediction that our enemies will test the new administration. I hope the new president exceeds my expectations.

Regardless of which ticket wins today, I hope that the president lives for at least four more years, & not just because I am filled with the milk of human kindness. Neither running mate is ready to be president, & Biden never will be.

If Obama wins, I hope that we do see a surge of support for the United States around the world, as the transnational progressives expect. "Soft power" in its various forms does indeed serve the United States, because it is easier for foreign leaders to support us if their people have a positive view toward us. I fear, however, that the Obama administration will view international popularity as an end, rather than a means, & confuse the approval of foreign elites for the respect of the foreign masses.

I hope that the GOP gets a clue. Among the various clues I hope they get, I hope that they learn that there is a difference between opposition to elite sensibilities & tastes & anti-intellectualism. The former is fine, the latter is destructive. Go to NASCAR races, hunt, play lawn darts, drink beer, mock modern art, deplore political correctness, & admire serious book learning all at once. There has been too much of the former & not enough of the latter in this election.

I hope that blog traffic remains at the high levels of recent months. But not that much. We could all do to get back to real work.

Good question! Only thing that gives me hope, is Bush didn't look very good 4 years ago. Media was certainly for Kerry, but nothing like what we are seeing today.

If the election was a pure popular vote, then you would be correct. But the founders had the wisdom to weight the electoral college to give a benefit to smaller states.

McCain has a shot at the electoral college, but it relies on a Bradly-effect sort of surge in his numbers in the swing states and/or PA. I give it a 15% chance.

117 jayzee  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 8:17:13am

Said it before, Grandma in FL is crossing party lines to vote McCain for the first time ever. Supposedly many more like her (older, Jewish etc) are doing the same. I also live in a very Jewish (religious) NE area, and there was an enormous amount of NEW Orthodox voters waiting to vote for the first time. The community in general is very supportive of McCain. Three friends of mine who were going to vote for O, have switched and voted McCain. All anecdotal of course but interesting.

Checking in from the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts:
I was able to get to the polls on my way to work this morning and did my part to try to restore sanity to our Government. One exciting development was that Barney Frank was not running unopposed so for once I got to vote against that fat POS. Our esteemed Junior Senator Jean Francois was also opposed by a Republican so it was like a two for!
Lastly we had a ballot initiative to eliminate the state income tax. CHECK. Around here it's the little things that matter on election day. My polling place was a little busier than normal but not unlike we saw during the last Presidential cycle. The P.R.M. will, of course, fall into the Obama column but I didn't see any big change in the number of people at the polls. I hope that's a good sign for Mac and Sarah nationally. Now it's back to checking the ammo and rations... Later Lizards....

Got out early. Heavy turnout here in Shelby Co. TN.

Interestingly, looks like the 0bama camp went on a use'em or lose'rm Astroturfing spree overnight with lots of yardsigns stuck up on highly traveled roads and intersections. Apparently a bunch of signs left over, whatever that might mean. Too much money? Too few takers?

Hundreds of signs all over the parking lot.

One sign 1- uno - for Obama Biden.

It must be hard to find a Bambi sign in NC?

I'm 90% sure McCain will win. The Obama campaign has been heavily reliant on their hopes that people will be affected by the bandwagon strategy, but i think it will have the opposite effect.

There was only one guy in front of me! Lines all around but apparently not many people in my district vote...I flirted and chatted with the little old guy who was there to show me how to use the lever - after he explained I asked him if he had any advice on who to vote for (he was in the booth with me behind the curtain). he said he couldn't tell me that but when I felt satisfied with my decision - really satisfied from the heart pull the lever. I had my little flip vid on and fairly well hidden but no luck.
NO ID WAS REQUIRED. I even offered and they said "we don't need all that."

What do you think finally did it for her?

Just curious if you know?

For my Grandmother is was just the accumulation of information regarding Obama's anti Israel and anti semitic cadre. She hates Palin, but hates Jackson and Farakhan and Khalidi more.

That's pretty much it. What's interesting is that she is not internet savvy and gets all her info from bs'ing with her friends (other retirees ins SE FL) and this has been a hot topic. To the older generation, apparently, Jewish issues still count. What was fascinating I think is that they refuse to discuss it openly. She was polled and told the pollster Obama even.

Voted this morning in SE PA. Crowded at 7:30, but then again the poll volunteers were fairly clueless. As I was standing in line I contemplated the following things, in no particular order:

1. Americans have been voting for a president every 4 years for 230 years. That's a long time to sustain a democracy, and we should be proud.

2. Voting is like a long shower after a hot day of work: it lifts the sweat of worry from your mind. I've done what I can, and now we just have to see what everybody else decided.

3. Whoever wins, he will be your president and mine. Let's have none of this "He's not MY president!" horseshit like the leftists do.

4. We absolutely, positively need to insist on nationwide voter ID requirements and use of paper ballots. It's the only way to restore confidence in the process.

5. Republicans need to figure out what kind of party the want to be, because what we've got now isn't cutting it. That's a post for a later day, though.

6. I'm glad the election is over. It's time to get on with our lives.

202 Pookykoala  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 8:32:58am

Just got back from voting in our precinct. We took the whole family. In order to beat the crowd, we rolled the kids out in their jammies, put the sneakers on along with the rain coats and umbrellas. I grabbed my coffee, made sure we had our voter cards, and we were off to the little Calvary church's basement to vote.

We got there about 20 minutes before the polls opened. There were already about 15 people in line ahead of us. Traditional paper ballots were being used. With the traditional double checking of the ballot numbers being called off to each other.

Obviously, our little part of the world was not expecting the turn-out. They only had one table set-up to vote with fold-out privacy screens. The little old ladies seemed to be overwhelmed from the start. We cast our votes, deposited our ballots in the locked box and proceed to exit. We were there all of twenty minutes.

By that time, the voting line had been splintered into two lines according to last names and was going out the door. (Usually, in our part of the country, there are very few that show up to vote and one can just walk right in, vote, and leave.) And, the church staffers had set up scones with jam and coffee service. Then were were off to the train station.

While driving, my husband quipped, " I sure hope that we won't be seeing change." And I replied, "I don't either. I want to keep the change in my pocket."

Good voting everyone!
McCain/Palin '08

Portae Inferi Non Praevalebunt.

And it's time for the Poll Hammer:

God bless us all

Polls are BS. Ojoe's poll hammer:

1. Polls are public. There are at least 2 people present when a polling question is asked. The Ballot is private.

2. Poll questions can be worded in leading, tricky ways. The ballot is simple.

3. Polls never measure the opinions of those who refuse to answer them. Polls are the responses of the 20% or fewer of people who answer the phones and respond to pollsters. The other 80+% of people either hang up or never answer the phone.

4. Polls can be used to try and influence the outcome of an election, so the motivation behind them and their reporting is suspect. The ballot is the election.

5. You can lie to a pollster. You cannot lie to the ballot.

6. Polls come to you. You have to get up off your ass to vote.

7. Only God knows the future anyway.

(see you all in 48 hours minimum)

Normally it's in and out within 5 minutes, 10 at the most, but this time it was 40 minutes, with the voting line along three walls of the fire hall's social room ... and the line didn't get any shorter the whole time we were there.

Professor ousted after tearing down McCain yard signs.

The St. Olaf (Northfield, Minn.) professor who, in a well-read Huffington Post item, recounted tearing down McCain campaign signs has resigned.

Per the Northfield News, it appears that Philip Busse was forced out.

St. Olaf spokesman David Gonnerman issued the following statement Monday afternoon:

"The St. Olaf College administration first learned of Phil Busse's self-admitted theft and destruction of campaign signs on the morning of Oct. 31 as a result of his posting on the Internet.

"The St. Olaf administration immediately referred the matter to local law enforcement authorities and commenced an investigation of its own.

"Mr. Busse has tendered his resignation and is no longer affiliated with St. Olaf College.

Busse has been charged with misdemeanor theft.

Pro-Obama people are all over campus trying one final time to get people to vote for him, and pro-Obama messages have been graffitied all over campus, but . . . OK, done with my duty for the day. In my small precinct just north of Motown, voter turnout from 2004 is up at least 75% for this time of day. In 2004, I was voter #215 or so at 10:30am. This time my number was #397. Mostly young folk, well younger folk, standing in line with me. Mostly white. Perhaps cancelling out the 'Detroiters for Democrats' vote? Hope so but doubt McCain can overcome here in Michigan. Saw at least 4 older guys with Vietnam Veteran Patches, or jackets, and thanked them for their service.

I know some of you here consider me a troll, but I want not to gloat over Obama's impending victory, but to praise McCain. He didn't stoop as low as he might have. Last night's "Frontline" made clear he pulled Bush's bacon out of the fire with the surge when the Iraq war was floundering. It's a shame he didn't get the GOP nod in 2000 ...

Whether you are a troll or not ...I can tell you that by the democrats selecting Senator Government as their candidate ... all 20 of democrat members of family are voting McCain ...they may be democrats but they are Americans first ...the democrats have lost many of their traditional democrats and many will never return if my side of the family is any indication ...

I saw that on the weather map this morning and that was the exact thing I thought.

Slight modification from CNN, "The polls are NOT yet open; Obama has a significant lead with 100% of the thousands of the 'votes' cast thus far. It's going to be a very long day for the McCain campaign and a short night for the results."

re: #21 Last Mohican

It was a gorgeous, cloudless, unseasonably warm, springlike day at the polls in Massachusetts today. Bustling, but no lines, and no waiting. Signs said "you may be asked to show photo ID," but not a single person was asked to do so. As usual. I could have voted at least five times if I had wanted to.

Why do people have to show their photo ID when picking up their will call tickets at the baseball stadium, but not when they vote?

Here in FL, no ID, no vote.

You don't have to name your school, but is it a State school, private, religous, liberal arts etc...? Just curious.

College was the 80's for me, and my kids are in elementary school, so I have no idea what it's like on campus anymore. I get the feeling from watching the news that it is just a sea of liberalism not only from the professors but also from the students. Your comments are encouraging.

It's a private school; it's a Catholic (Jesuit) run school, but that doesn't have much effect on the demographics of the students--I would estimate that the make-up of the student population is about the same for any other average college.

Many (but far from all) of the people I've met who are supporting McCain are moderate Democrats who don't like Obama.

Emailed sister in northern MO this morning with a little be-sure-to-vote reminder, she said that she and her husband had already voted (McCain, of course) and mom in southern MO was just about to head out to vote. I voted a couple of weeks ago here in northern Calif. McCain at the top on my ballot both literally and figuratively.

GO McCAIN/PALIN!

257 LaMano  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 8:50:24am

At least I have a good day, regardless. First, vote. Second, lunch with Michael Medved at Fleming's in Scottsdale as he broadcasts his show. Third, tickets already in hand for the 2008 McCain/Palin Victory Watch Party at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. Good company all day.

I heard a conservative radio commentator the other day say that IF Obama wins he'll have to scrap most of his socialist ideology and will govern from more of a centrist position. That scenario is only possible if the repubs pick up more seats. Otherwise it's Pollyanna thinking.

That commentator failed to mention all the judicial appointments that will steer our nation in the wrong direction for the next 40 years. Judicial activism is a scary thought.

No, not unless you count a few children along for the experience. Most were middle-aged or older -- this is farming country, and we were in about 10, when most non-retirees would have been at work.

BTW, Mr. E voted for the first time since I've known him (Repub, straight ticket), and our neighbors, life-long Dems, were adamant that they'd never vote for Obama. Heck, Carl won't even allow his name to be mentioned in their house!

Chalk up 2 more Mcain votes in Ohio.
My wife was actually undecided going in. Its not her fault, she works at a university. She thinks I am paranoid about him being a communist. In any case as we were leaving she said "I couldnt do it"
I told her I was afraid to ask.
She said she didnt understand how all her mentors and people she works with could have been snowed by someone who has never done anything.
After explaining to her how the socialists first infiltrated higher education and went on from there, she went back to thinking I was paranoid.
anyways, its in Gods hands now.

Meh. As someone who by heritage is among the highest per capita consumers in the world universe, I would kill launch into a pillow fight for a cup of this. On the other hand, this one is just as good.

Then of course, at this time of year, what could be better than this?

Hey, Finns are so coffee obsessed, look at their garbage trucks!

I voted at about 8am EST this morning in northern Virginia. Turnout was about the same as in previous elections. I was offered an electronic (smudge screen) voting option, but there was a line for that. I went with the old "fill in the blob with a marker" ballot instead.

my daughters both voted yesterday in a mock election at their grade school. The 5th grader voted McCain and the 1st grader voted Obama. I asked my little obamite why she voted Obama and she said that if he wins the boys all get batman toys and the girls get Hannah Montana toys. I have no idea what she is talking about but doesn't that pretty much some up the Obama mentality. "we're voting Obama because he's going to give us _______" (fill in the blank)

I wish the media would hold off on reporting ANY results from anywhere until the final polling places closed in California. That might stop some voters in the western half of the US from getting discouraged and not voting.

Wow! Ok, that's more than a little scary.

My neighborhood is heavily Democratic. I had 4 campaign signs in my front yard, the one for my US Senator was stolen twice, but the others were left alone. No threats or vandalism though, even implied threats.

Rush, Sean or Michael gloating that 'liberals will be driven to exile' would be treated as hate speech, and investigated for ANY instance of violence that might happen within 20 miles of those words being heard.

Just returned from voting in MN with Hubby and neighbors (who haven't voted since 2000.)

I really hope that MN turns RED.

McCain/Palin 2008!

292 Canoe Train  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 9:33:23am

Voted absentee, as I have done in other elections during the time that I've been in Grad School. made certain that it was in the mail by this time last week, in order to give the ballot time to get home. Hoping for a McCain win, but I noticed that the Republican Party in Dane County, Wisc., did not field any candidates for the State or Local / Municipal offices that were open for election this time around.

294 soxfan4life  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 9:53:26am

Am going later with my wife and son to vote for McCain/Palin here in MA. Sort of like pissing against the tide, but the alternative is too disgusting. Hopefully question 1 passes and those pukes on Beacon Hill get the message. Also voting for Jeff Beatty hopefully he sends JFK packing. Although America will suffer if O gets elected, hopefully he takes Gov.Patrick and Sen. Kerry with him and we get someone else, don't really believe we could get worse. Here's hoping and praying that we all hear Pres. elect McCain's victory speech and BHO give a graceful concession speech. Good day to all in the lizard world.

295 Sounder  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 10:24:36am

re: #271 redstateredneck

Many thanks redstaterneck. I'm a long time reader and now a first (err....second) time poster.

I saw an interesting scene near a polling place on my way to work this AM. Three senior citizens were standing with stock McCain/Palin signs and waving to the passersby in their cars. Inbetwixt them was a home made sign that read:

"Don't Tax Me, Bro!"

/tell me senior citizens are out of touch

297 ladycatnip  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 11:12:16am

My husband and I just voted. There were no lines, but for the first time in 20+ years of living here, our polling place was completely run by African Americans. Usually the volunteers are all senior citizens. Neither being racist, nor being one who subscribes easily to conspiracy-thinking, I have to say the uneasy thought of ACORN placing their people everywhere crossed my mind.

298 inkependent_voter  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 11:34:46am

I spent 4 frickin' hours in line at our polling place. I thought 2004 was bad, it took only 1 hour then! Other precincts in our township (outside Detroit) were clocking people in and out in under 30 minutes, but apparently the total incompetents at our polling place managed to screw up royally. It took me 2 1/2 hours just to get in the gym at the school. Then another 45 minutes to get a ballot. They divided the line into A-G and H-Z! They were going out in the hall and pulling people in to get in the A-G line, which really made a lot of us mad, since we had been there way before and had to wait while people who had arrived an hour after we did voted first. You know how many people named SMITH we have in our precinct? Pages! And whoever divided up the alphabet obviously can't count, since A-G is only 7 letters of the alphabet. The other 19 letters had to wait in the second line. And then after voting and standing in line for 15 minutes to run my ballot into the machine, I noticed the guy in front of me put his ballot in and it didn't even register his vote. I made sure to check that mine did. 4 hours and nothing to show for it for him. Oh well...he was probably voting for OBama anyway, LOL!

299 Ezekiel2517  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 11:37:11am

Rained this morning. Not that this should affect turnout here at all, since it rains here more often this time of year. Got to the polls early, 10 minutes before opening and there were 20 people lined up already. Luckily they split the line into 5-6 different precincts when the doors opened, so I was able to be 2nd in line for my precinct.
