Any chance the house gets a double on the house if McCain wins?

Phone polls are worthless since many don't have land lines now and have gone to cell phones. I haven't received a single robo call on my vonage line. And I'm unaware of any polling on my wife's phone. So I'd hazard a guess that democrats have more land line phones than republicans.
Good work on the site, Charles!

I'm so glad you've got these open threads! I feel like I'm jumping out of my skin here.
I haven't voted yet because I can wait until mid-morning. I don't want to add another body in front of someone who has to be at work at a certain time.
My area could go either way. It can be rather conservative. I doubt Cali will go for McCain, but numbers count, IMO. The other issues are worth voting on though and they're important.

My son and brother were in a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant watching a football game on Saturday, when an Obama ad came on.
My son said the ENTIRE bar went completely silent- and there were still other games on other channels. Some drunk guy yelled out, "Well, get ready for higher taxes!". Nobody looked happy to see Obama. As soon as the ad was over everyone went back to enjoying themselves. LOL

Polls can have an unintentional bias when there is less than 100% participation because of the likelihood of various groups to respond. For example, on average, Democrats are about twice as likely as Republicans to respond to exit polling. Naturally, this tends to skew results in favor of the Democrats; however, you can't really read a positive Republican exit poll as affirmative, because the sampling may just have gotten lucky and picked mostly young, enthusiastic Republicans.

Polling place update: Irvine, CA
Something odd going on this year. I've been polling at the same little neighborhood spot for the past five years and I have to tell you that I've never seen a turn-out like this. I go to my polling place just about the same time every year. First I vote, then it's off to the office.
Every year until just now, I've pulled up easily found a parking spot right in front of the polling place, checked in and voted in less than 15 minutes. No more than two or three other people there voting.
This year, there is no parking and the line to vote is easily out the door with at least 20 people in line. Pretty crazy for our little neighborhood polling place.
The way I see it, someone is going to lose and lose big.

I noticed that too when I thanked them after voting this morning. The workers in my polling location seemed surprised that someone thanked them.
Line was consistently 15-20 deep (longest I've seen since the Davis recall election) the time I was there - but it moved quickly. I also noticed almost every person in line using a photo id to speed things along...and when 2 people weren't on the roll, they were quickly offered provisional ballots or assistance to find their proper polling location. Very efficient....but then this is flyover LA County....

No matter the outcome of this election the landscape of America is going to change big time in regards to which institutions we trust and the make up of the major political parties. Dems crossing over to become Repubs, Conservatives really frustrated with the Repubs, and so much more.
The coming days promise to be exciting and difficult and at times painful but I believe a new America is going to emerge from the ashes of this election cycle.
Now that future has a far better chance of succeeding with McCain as president then it does with Obama.

I've been believing all along that PA will go red. This, of course, does not count in voter fraud, which I hear they are having a problem with in the Philly area today. Something about GOP election officials not being allowed in the polling area. Will have to look for the link.

We vote at a church in our community here in GA. I normally can just stop by on my way to work and vote, no problem. Usually no more than 20 cars in the lot. This morning both parking lots were full, people parking in a field, and parking all along the road. Sure glad I voted early!
My wife drove by the polling place in a neighboring community and she reports the same thing, overflowing parking lots and long lines running out the door.
I feel soooo pumped up to see that turnout! Looks like all my “bitter clinger” neighbors are showing up in mass!

Voting for a candidate because of the color of his skin is a terrible and dangerous thing to do and many people are doing it without thinking of the consequences. It is anti-social behavior. Also, assuming someone is racist because they are not voting for a particular candidate is also dangerous and creates more racism.

I was 6th in line this morning at 5.45, 45 minutes before the polls open in Ohio. By the time the polling place finally opened (sometimes they are as much as 10 minutes late--slow moving volunteers...) the line must have been 100 deep. This is in a solidly middle class neighborhood inside the city of Cincinnati. The people in line were all ages and descriptions.
Inside, they were checking photo IDs and signatures against signatures on record, but the process was miserably slow.
I've been despairing over the nonsense out of the mouth of The (wildly untutored in economics) One, and decided that if he is witless enough to try and turn us all into kulaks freezing to death in the dark, we're just going to have to find ways of recalling and chucking out of office anyone who goes along with such madness. The One can harbor all manner of festering collectivist fantasies, but that doesn't mean the citizenry will passively accept his plans. O, no.

Chavez offers talks with "black man" in White House
Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee who would be the first black U.S. president if he wins Tuesday's election, said this year he would be open to dialogue with leaders like Chavez -- a remark that was seized on by Republicans as naive.
"We are not asking him to be a revolutionary, to be a socialist -- no," Chavez said at a political rally. We just want the black man who is about to be the U.S. president to have enough stature for the times the world is living through.
One socialist to another and Chavez says "O" doesn't have fight for change....peaceful revolutionary change!

Racism is the lowest, most crudely primitive form of collectivism. It is the notion of ascribing moral, social or political significance to a man's genetic lineage--the notion that a man's intellectual and characterological traits are produced and transmitted by his internal body chemistry. Which means, in practice, that a man is to be judged, not by his own character and actions, but by the characters and actions of a collective of ancestors.

I am not at all pleased with the new America that will emerge from this election cycle. We have, all at once and suddenly, absolutely lost the free press in America. I do not believe we'll get it back again.
A member of a racist hate group has won the presidential nomination of a major American political party (and will probably be president). That "O" logo with the stripes in it carries with it as much hatred and violence as a KKK hood, and I have to look at it on signs and T-shirts and buttons everywhere I go.

I agree with this - but there is also one additional point regarding racism that has become far more widely apparent this cycle - that racism against whites by blacks is something that exists and can often be more violent and virulent than the inverse.

Ditto for Westtown PA (West Chester, PA area)

The market will crash if Obama is elected. Most people will sell stocks to avoid paying 50% capital gains taxes. It's going to get worse folks, much worse. I don't know why Wall Street is up today except that maybe they think McCain will win.
I think the "worst case" scenario has probably been mostly priced in.
A McCain win should spark a rally, but I think even an Obama win will cause a *small* (though likely temporary) spike just by removing uncertainty.

I voted earlier this morning - no lines, walked right up to get checked off and get a ballot. After filling out the ballot and before inserting it into the box, I had to 'check out'. The whole thing took about seven minutes. This is in southern NH.
Also, earlier I had volunteered to be a 'challenger' at a polling place in a neighboring town. I was given a notebook of voters whose last names were in a certain range of the alphabet and who were registered as Republicans. As they checked in, I checked them off. At some point today the party will be calling those who haven't voted yet. The guy sitting next to me was my counterpart for the other party, his book had everyone's name in it and looked better organized. He was checking off more names than I was :-(. Those of us who were Republican Party volunteers were dwarfed by the number of the other party volunteers.

Riding in this morning, my MUNI train passed a polling place. The line stretched down most of the block. One fellow was waiting, with his dog beside him - a very handsome dog, fluffy and shiny and well behaved.
I laughed and remarked to the lady beside me, "I guess the dog's going to vote, too."
Aside from that, I lost my glasses last night, and am waiting for my eye appointment. Currently, I feel like I should be tapping around with a white cane.

I went to bed praying and I woke up praying. Whatever happens today, we are going to need a lot of help.
If an employee does not have three free hours during election hours ('free hours' meaning hours he's not at work) the employer by law must allow up to two paid hours for your husband to vote. That's what I read in my voting pamphlet. Of course, it also says, prior arrangements for that time off should be made in advance with the employer. You might want to check that out.

I spent all last week at my Dad's house, biting my tongue and dodging comments from my stepmother about how awful are Republicans, Palin, McCain, etc. Left yesterday morning, had a three hour layover in Nashville. Someone called my name (I'd never been to Nashville before.) It was my stepmother's cousin, coincidentally on all the same flights back to the same area in NM as me. She was carrying a purse with a leather applique of Obama on it. We would spend the next 10 hours together. I tried biting my tongue some more, but after the first hour, when she asked me who I supported in the primary (with the unspoken assumption that it was either Obama or Clinton) I said "Giuliani." She paused, took a breath, and said, "You're not for Obama, then." I shook my head. The conversation pretty much stayed off of politics after that, with only a few snipes on her part. Her husband picked us up in El Paso for the 3 hour drive back to our area. Besides his Obama bumper stickers, he had one that said something about mandatory lobotomies for Republicans. I bit my tongue some more. I'm lucky they didn't dump me in a field somewhere, beacause they knew I hadn't voted yet. (I did it this morning.)

Heard one report already of problems in Palm Beach County, FL where many ballots cast are being rejected as undervotes since the seniors didn't complete the full ballot (with the propositions). Of course, the issue is with the Democrat leadership who decided that undervotes are reasons to reject. Undervotes shouldn't be a reason to reject - just a case where someone might have voted for two candidates when only one should have been selected. (The kerfuffle in 2000 was very much the fault of the idiots in charge of those counties - but that data seems to get lost in the telling of the story....)

I voted this morning since by the time I get off work in CA, they are usually calling the national races and I don't want that to discourage me.
My strategy for propositions that I'm not familiar with is to vote no if they have the words bond, tax, or regulate in them, even if they are for children, hospitals, or furry animals. I figure that there are enough people who reflexively vote yes when they see the word school that I need to cancel out some of that thoughtlessness.
As for judges or local elections with only people I am unfamiliar with, I leave it blank.
People say our duty is to vote. It is not. Our duty is to see that the most qualified people are holding public office, which means if you haven't gotten informed on that race, it is irresponsible to vote anyway, imo.

This election, no matter the outcome, has set race relations in this country back 20 years.
I'd say it's worse than that. This is a point I feel strongly about. It's not only that people are voting for a candidate solely because of his race, which is a bad thing. It's because Obama's response to criticism has been to dismiss it by claiming that his accusers are necessarily racist. It's a pernicious tactic that not only implies that black people are not required to form cogent, consistent arguments, but subtly implies that they are not capable of doing so. Worst of all, Obama's approach to dealing with the Reverend Wright controversy was to state that he "cannot disown" Wright, because Wright's insane, hateful ranting is inextricably part of the black experience -- that all black people think this way, and they can't help doing so. If I were a black person I would be incredibly insulted by that.

Just got off the phone with my sister in Reading (pronounced 'Red-ing'), PA. She hadn't voted yet but will today. I was able to get her to take a good look at voting for Obama, and what that might mean with the coal story and and explaining the impact of his tax policies. I was also able to defuse her concern about McCain and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). I reminded her about Sarah Palin and her son, and got her to see that if McCain wins, the ADA will have someone who understands its importance in the administration. I don't know if I did enough (she does not say who she votes for), but I at least moved our chances of getting her vote in the right direction.

The selling hasn't already happened. The previous selling was people getting out because the economy was headed off a cliff. The rally has been huge bottom feeders making a killing and suckering in retail investors. The bottom feeders will bail and the market will tank leaving retail guys holding the bag. Folks, the big boys control the market and they have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders. They need to preserve wealth and in the next few months, we're going to see them do just that especially if retail fund holders begin bailing due to tax implications.

re: #232 wrenchwench
It is indeed good to be back in lizard land.
What's good for a battered and bleeding tongue?

Polls opened today at 8:00 am in Nebraska. I got to my polling place in an Omaha suburb at 8:05 and there was a line almost out the building. I was the 45th voter of the day, and proudly cast my vote McCain/Palin, and a straight republican ticket.
By the way, I am by no means a rich Republican. The wife and I combined make less than $50K/yr--try raising almost grown children and a grandchild on that! We have seven kids combined between the ages of 16 and 23, and the oldest one and her son are back living with us.

As for judges or local elections with only people I am unfamiliar with, I leave it blank.People say our duty is to vote. It is not. Our duty is to see that the most qualified people are holding public office, which means if you haven't gotten informed on that race, it is irresponsible to vote anyway, imo.
I also vote no on anything that smells like a tax or looks like it will cost money. We question that wanted to move our county seat. Buy more property and buildings? No way. Also wanted to raise sales tax (but only for 5 years!) for community colleges. No go on that either.

OT -
A newfound fungus living in rainforest trees makes biofuel more efficiently than any other known method, researchers say.
In fact, it's so good at turning plant matter into fuel that researchers say their discovery calls into question the whole theory of how crude oil was made by nature in the first place.
The fungus, which has been named Gliocladium roseum, stands out in the crowd.
The fungus grows inside the Ulmo tree in the Patagonian rainforest in South America. "When we examined the gas composition of G. roseum, we were totally surprised to learn that it was making a plethora of hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives," the stuff of diesel, Strobel said. The fuel it produces has been dubbed "myco-diesel."
There is hope !

This can backfire also. Once on a vote for a new town hall here, the way it was worded, if you voted no, that meant the town hall would get built and bonds would be issued. It was a vaguely worded proposition to prevent the town from building a new town hall that was opposed by alot of people.
Upset the heck out of alot of people here.

It's a two-way street. Yeah, the television media has served decades of pablum. But that's because the people were demanding it -- ratings aren't rocket science.
The media has shamed itself, no doubt. But so have its consumers. I still believe in personal responsibility.
When there is an operative monopoly on what is presented and what isn't, what people want has no calculation.
And for you to say you believe in personal responsibility when you willfully disdain it repeatedly and constantly elsewhere is the height of arrogance from you.
Forget about blaming the consumer when all the media does is dish out crap, Mr. Media.

Well, I didn't go into neighborhoods further into town, but I saw more McCain bumper stickers than Obama ones, and that was on 240 north between Germantown Rd. and downtown.
At Wolfchase Mall in Cordova, I saw three black people wearing Obama t-shirts, but the parking lot had WAY more McCain stickers on the cars.
I'd say that it's probably like you think; further east, McCain; further in town, Obama. But I was surprised, I thought I'd see solid Obama signs and stickers as far as the eye could see.

Good afternoon all! Just got back from voting, myself and our 2 daughters went to the polls together, and hubby just left to do the deed himself. I am setting up camp for the night in my home office, moved the microwave and coffee maker in from the kitchen, hijacked the granddaughters Halloween candy, stocked up on popcorn and put the pooches beds and feather pillows in here so they don't have to lie on the wood floor, since they will not leave my side unless it is to go up to bed. I have LGF on the computer, Rush on the radio and FOX on TV, and it is a straight shot to the bathroom. Did I forget anything?

Downtown Chicago now getting all fired up for the Obama Rally.
Extra trains today to get the workers out of the Loop.
Seems clear to me that they think trouble is a real possibility.
I think trouble is a very good possibility tonight. I'll be taking photographs outside the area, not within Grant Park. It'll be easier to make a dash for the train station that way.

I should have known better than to visit Rockwell's hate site -- he's ranting about "Republicanism is dead" and "this is the price we pay for rejecting Ron Paul."
But we didn't reject Ron Paul. All the online polls show him 90% ahead for President...

I think the state constitution needs a refresher. According to Article 8,
SECTION 5. PENSION AND RETIREMENT RIGHTS
Membership in any pension or retirement system of the
State, any unit of local government or school district, or
any agency or instrumentality thereof, shall be an
enforceable contractual relationship, the benefits of which
shall not be diminished or impaired.
That's why the state's jacked with an estimated trillion in liabilities over the next 40 years...

HAS ANYONE ELSE SEEN/HEARD THIS? THE TRANSCRIPT WAS JUST PULLED FROM NATIONAL REVIEW ON-LINE VIA THE CORNER. GOOD GOD WE'RE BECOMING THIRD WORLD ALREADY...
From Fox earlier (rough transcript):
JANE SKINNER: breaking election news, we have reports of possible voter intimidation in some way — pennsylvania. republicans saying that two black panthers have been blocking the doorway of one polling locations. rick, what are the details on this? what are you hearing?
RICK LEVENTHAL: i do not even know where to begin, but we have reached a polling place in the city of philadelphia. one of the two black panthers who was allegedly blocking the door is standing right over here, with an accused us of intimidating voters because we were here with a camera and microphone. he did not answer questions, other people here have confirmed that another person in black panther attire was holding a night stick and apparently the concern was that they were intimidating people who were trying to go inside to vote. a republican poll observer actually called the police, the police were here and we miss them, they came and left. that person called the police is here. why don't you tell us — step down off the curb, if you do not mind. what is going on here?
CITIZEN: we got a phone call that there was intimidation going on. i walked up to the door, two gentlemen in black panther guard, one brandishing a nightstick, standing in front of the door. they closed ranks as i walked up. i am a veteran, that does not scare me. i went inside and found full- watchers, they said they had been here for an hour — i went inside and found poll-watchers, they said that they had said not to let people outside because black people are going to win no matter what. at that point, i spoke to him, we would not get into a fistfight, i said, and i called the police.
LEVENTHAL: the person with the nightstick was escorted away, which i just confirmed inside. but the implication is that you were telling me that the black panthers were there to intimidate white voters from coming to this location?
CITIZEN: anyone who is not going their way, i do not know. someone in front of a polling place with a nightstick, that is intimidating for all voters.
LEVENTHAL: this is the first time i have heard of black panthers being stationed outside of a polling place. the one gentleman who is still here, he is a poll-watcher?
CITIZEN: yes, and he can wear what he wants.
LEVENTHAL: the other person was not allowed to be there with a nice that?
CITIZEN: you cannot stand with a nightstick anywhere, that is a weapon. obviously, you cannot stand around with a weapon menacingly in your hand under any circumstances.
LEVENTHAL: that is situation, as far as we know it. we have heard of other incidents in the city, including voting machines breaking down. we heard of an incident not far from here where far — all three machines broke down. people did wait, most of them. lines have dissipated. i have not made it inside yet, we had a skirmish in front of the door. apparently there is voting going on as well. at this point, apparently anyone who wants to vote here can vote here.
SKINNER: i know that they do not have enough people to man ever falling site, but as far as you understand the police have come and gone. is anyone monitoring in case someone is still hanging around?
LEVENTHAL: well there are poll watchers still standing here, we’ve been to at least a half a dozen polls around here and I haven’t seen any police officers, they don’t want a police presence to intimidate some voters, they did escort one gentleman out of here
SKINNER: It’s true in some places they don’t want police on sight, plenty going on there for you

Some notes from my small corner of upstate NY:
I'm on a team of engineers designing new products. We're used to being perceived as cold-hearted, breaking our decisions down into parameters and evaluating our choices solely on merits. I was pleased to hear that the entire team, even the token Democrat, say that they've chosen McCain.
I mentioned this in passing elsewhere but... In the last election I was the #21 voter in my polling place at 8:00AM. Today I was #57. I live in a working-class Republican neighborhood and I have some small hope that a huge upstate voter turnout could swamp New York City's vote. Oh, if only Hillary was on the ballot today...
The bigger excitement here was that the con-artists from IDT Energy came to town last night. They knocked on my door and wanted to "look at my energy bill to see if I was getting my tax credit". I somehow failed to find a bill for them to look at, and after they left (and I googled IDT Energy to remind myself of their name and habits) I called the cops. I wasn't sure the local police would be interested but they were. They said they'd already sent a car down our street once to look for the scammers.

Just got back from voting for McCain in the blue state of Maryland (which, by the way would be a red state if it weren't for all the liberals in Baltimore, Montgomery and Prince Georges counties).
After I voted, I called my brother and had an interesting conversation with him. He is 54 and has 4 children in their 30's. They all live in Maryland. He says that every one of his kids voted for McCain today. One of his kids and her husband, were sitting on the fence as of Saturday, but he took the time to explain to them the wisdom of voting for McCain rather than Obama. They have 3 children. My brother said that if Obama wins, it will not only impact our generation of Boomers, but their generation and her children's generation.
They said they believed Obama wasn't going to raise their taxes, and that he was even going to give them a refund check. My brother explained the fallacies of Obama's campaign promises and how if Bush'es tax cut were allowed to expire, it would actually mean their taxes would go up. He also said that any refund they might get from an Obama administration would quickly evaporate when the Bush tax cuts expired. My brother also talked to them about "Joe the Plumber" and how Obama told him that it would be good to "spread the wealth".
A little object lesson in spreading the wealth was all it took.
My brother posed this scenario to them:
Suppose I am wealthy because I built up a business with my own sweat and blood. My business became so successful that I was able to employ 20 people so that they could support their own families. One day, when I die, all that wealth would be yours and your other brothers and sisters. But, because Obama says it isn't fair that my next door neighbor who has far less wealth than me, couldn't share in my wealth, Obama would ensure that I would be taxed at a higher rate so my wealth today would be spread around to others through increased taxes, to those who didn't earn it, so that it would be considered "fair". Would you be happy about that? Would that be fair? I would be less wealthy, and if I should die, I could not pass along that extra wealth to you and your family.
They saw the problem immediately.
So, after investing about an hour of discussion with his daughter and her husband, they voted this morning for McCain.
It was a grand slam for our family---100% of us going for McCain in the blue state of Maryland.

I feel like I did my part this year, donated a couple hundred to the McCain/Palin campaign, got my lifelong Southern Democrat mom converted to the Republican party and my non-voting husband to register as an Independent. All of us voting for McCain today. Since I'm done voting I'll be spending the rest of the day enjoying time with my now seven-month old daughter (4-4-08). Very happy to be a part of this community, even if I don't have a ton to contribute all the time. Thanks again, Lizards!

Enjoy every moment! They grow fast and it only gets better. I have two girls (2 and 4) and as a guy who simply assumed my kids would one day all be boys I can not tell you how much two beautiful, thoughtful, caring, angelic little girls could melt a dad's heart. If I'm blessed with nothing but girls I'll be the happiest guy in the world. No matter what happens with the election you'll still wake up and go to bed a mother.

It's unfortunate that I jump away from my desk to turn down the volume on the radio when the MSM hourly "news" comes on in between Beck/Rush/Medved/Levin/local conservative hosts. Fox (News) Radio is not much better than ABC/CBS. They all fawn over the Ø.
