Election Day, Thread 3

Politics | Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 9:18:37 am PST

Fox News just reported on an incident at a polling station in Philadelphia, where Black Panthers were blocking the entrance (one of them holding a nightstick) and intimidating voters; police were called. According to a witness they were telling people, “A black man is going to win this election no matter what,” and, “White supremacy is over.” One of these Black Panthers is actually an official poll watcher.

When Fox News showed up, the Black Panthers started accusing them of voter intimidation.

Good grief. Here’s another open thread...

“A black man is going to win this election no matter what.” One of these Black Panthers is actually an official poll watcher.

Did they specify which one?

Would they be satisfied with Michael Steele or Alan Keyes?

My cousin told me this morning that the TBI and local LE are hanging out at polling places after the Black Panthers showed up in Crockett County the other day.

Woman under investigation for voter fraud

MICHIGAN CITY - Authorities are investigating a Michigan City woman who reportedly said - while waiting to vote early here Monday - she already voted in Florida.

Ralph Howes, a La Porte County Election Board member, said Monday afternoon he had been on the phone with authorities in Lake County, Fla. He verified someone voted there using "the same date of birth and the same first name and middle initial but a different last name and different Social Security number, so I'm working on it.

"If we found out that she has voted twice, we certainly will be referring it to the prosecutor," said Howes, the Republican member of the three-person election board.

Authorities were alerted by attorney Doug Bernacchi, who has an office in Michigan City. Bernacchi said when he was going to the courthouse to conduct business, the woman, whom he didn't know, hailed him from a car and asked how many voting machines were available.

"She told me she already voted in Florida, where the polling place had 48 voting machines," he said, adding he was surprised anyone would be so brazen about committing vote fraud. He said her car had an Obama sticker on it.

Later in the courthouse, he noticed her in a line of people waiting to vote.

"She was politicking, going up and down the line, and she was in line to vote," Bernacchi said. She said she voted "in every state," he said.

53 zombie  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 9:28:57am

Here's a polling story that was just reported to me:

Person went to polling station.

Workers there claimed person was not on voting rolls -- despite the fact they they have lived in the same place for over 15 years.

Repeated protestations and searches led nowhere.

Finally, as person was about to leave in tears, not having voted, Supervisor comes over asks asks of the poll workers, "Did you look on the green list?"

"What green list?"

Well, it turns out there was another list they didn't know about, and they had been erroneously turning people away all morning. Three people who had been rejected but who were still standing around were discovered in the mysterious green list.

All three had to swear they still lived in their homes, but then allowed to vote.

When the person who told me this story turned in their completed ballot, the poll worker took it, tore off the stub to hand back, and slipped into the ballot box -- but as he did so he took a not-very-surreptitious glance at the filled-in boxes, and by so doing he could tell who the person has voted for president (since he had memorized which bubble was the presidential race bubble). He scowled and glared at the person as they left, having perceived that they had voted for McCain.

This was not me -- I'm not going to vote until this afternoon.

from WSBTV Nov 4 2008,

Georgia's Secretary of State has launched a full investigation and may seek criminal charges against three Georgia men who appear to have early-voted twice.

“This is extraordinarily disturbing," said Secretary of State Karen Handel.

A team of investigative journalists from WSB-TV in Atlanta, WFTV in Orlando and WFTS in Tampa and WCPO in Cincinnati compared Georgia's voter rolls with those in Florida and Ohio and found more than 100,000 people who appear to be registered to vote in more than one state, with no government oversight to catch it.

I mentioned to him that I had not gone yet, and that I would be heading out later today to cast my vote. He then asked if I thought Obama was going to win the election, and I said that there is always a possibility, depending on how things fall into place. He then asked me if I was going to vote for Obama, because so many people in Europe want an Obama presidency.

I responded "I will cast my vote, and we will see what happens, and I consider my vote to be a private matter."

He says "Here's to hoping you make the right choice!"

And I will be making the right choice, when I cast my vote for McCain/Palin.

Breaking: Voter Intimidation in N. St. Louis County

I'll keep this as brief as possible, as we're still gathering information from our field reporters.

We had a tip come in our on Strikeforce Hotline that there are police circling Berkley Middle School in the Airport Township.

There are two issues in play:

1. Police are circling the polling place, which according to our source, is making people in line uneasy.
2. Poll workers are harassing voters over identification.

This is at least the third one today.

Dammit, just when I found something fun to do, I have to run downtown to get my blood pressure meds, really.

Hey Cognito, keep being an asshole for the rest of the day so when I get back, I can join back in the fun.

You know, why don't you tell us where you "sit" before you tell us where you "stand." Your method of commenting is to never tell us where you are coming from, just where you are going, there for it offers you the option of weaseling out of any possible position because you never start with any obvious foundation.

Almost like the MSM, whoops, did I say that?

What the heck are you talking about? I'm just mocking the absurdity of 'a black man' -- the fact that the Panthers don't even apparently care which man, as long as he's black.

Why is that a problem?

I got it, if that helps.

No problems in Mesa, Arizona today, just lots of people with the same idea as me....I got there at 6:00am and by the time I cast my vote 45 minutes later, I was number 157 on the counter.

I saw three ladies given provisional ballots because the records indicated they were given early ballots weeks ago. All three also were asked to put their jackets on because they were wearing Obama t-shirts.

Vote early and vote often!

I know of at least one vote cast for McCain now!

Me and my wife voted this morning in Ca. very easy prossess, all the poll-workers were smiling. Boooooring!

I just got back from voting about half an hour ago. My parents voted by mail, but this being my first time voting, I wanted to get the full experience. (Besides, I don't really trust vote-by-mail.) The poll workers thought I had voted absentee as well, but they checked their books and everything turned out to be just fine. I was in and out in five minutes.

Speaking of Black Panthers, I actually mentioned them in this zomblog posting from last night:

Berkeley, land of happy T-shirts

A couple minutes later, leaving the event, I ran into this guy with his “Defend Oakland” shirt featuring a machine gun. And no, he’s not talking about defending it from criminals — he’s talking about defending it from the police. The slogan and the concept are left over from the Black Panther era.

I voted about 10 am. Everything nice and friendly, lots of hugs and handshakes. About a 50-50 mix of black and white, both poll workers and voters. I was #255 to sign-in, but #406 in the ballot box. Higher than normal number of absentee ballots, but this also looks like a large turnout in this area. My strongest empression is the silent majority are turning out to vote. If this is happening across the country, tonight will be a good night.

The original Panthers were more than just loudmouths in black beanies. They were intent on initiating the takeover of the United States by force. They've been retroactively rehabilitated by academia, but they were in fact quite scary.

And they're just as scary now -- more so, since they've gained a legitimacy in some areas. Their membership is way up.

To funny. I doubt that will happen in Gatlinburg, (I already voted, but have to make a run to the local post office. The voting station is right next door) BUT I just may drive to Knoxville. If I see if that is happening. Anyone want a reasonably decent , yet small blog, 'cause I'll be in Brushy Mountain State Prison?

Just got this in my email. This is written by someone I know. It's not forwarded. This incident would have happened in the Tidewater area of Virginia:

Did you SEE the touch screen ballot!?

In case you didn't, it it a fine example of home court advantage.

The first screen has one choice in big bold letters

BARAK OBAMA

Now it is not at all clear from the first screen that there are any other choices, but, if you look closely, there is a "next" button. In order to see the other presidential candidates. One must click the little touch button marked "next"...which adjoins the "vote" field. If you do not fumble finger the vote/next field and vote for Barak Obama you are taken to the next screen the POTUS wannabe ghetto which contains the 4 other presidential candidates in smaller type.

The Senatorial and House fields are laid out the same as the mere non-Obama contenders.

As we have a secret ballot (until at least January 20th) I will leave you guessing ( yeah right) and refrain from disclosing my choices, except to say I voted for whom I intended.

This touch screen may be as bad as the butterfly butterfly ballots of Boca Raton infamy.

12 hours & this horrid election will be over.

I assume you voted without mishap?

Chuckie Schumkster equates political talk radio to pornography.

“The very same people who don’t want the Fairness Doctrine want the FCC [Federal Communications Commission] to limit pornography on the air. I am for that… But you can’t say government hands off in one area to a commercial enterprise but you are allowed to intervene in another. That’s not consistent.”

In 2007, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), a close ally of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) told The Hill, “It’s time to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine. I have this old-fashioned attitude that when Americans hear both sides of the story, they’re in a better position to make a decision.”

I could not get onto LGF earlier as my browser was running slow...high traffic day I suppose. So I was able to go on HotAir and post the following under the "Track Today's Vote..." thread...no Black Panthers to report, but there was one onther incident..

I voted at approximatly 7:10 this morning where I live just north of Boston and it was doing a pretty brisk business. Traffic was a bit more heavy on my way out just a few minutes later. I did however witness one curious incident. While giving my name and address to one of the nice little old(er) ladies working the table for my precinct, a married couple around my age (early 40’s) from the same street gave theirs and was informed that they had already voted. The woman then stated that they had “requested absentee ballots and never received them.” The little old(er) lady then said “Well it’s already marked that you voted.” At this point the woman voter stated she spoke to someone at the Town Hall and was informed to “just show up and vote anyway.” At this point the second older woman working the table just said to mark an “x” next to the one already on the list and give them another ballot. I didn’t give it a lot of thought until driving to work that I may have just witnessed a case of voter fraud. Should they have been allowed to vote without confirming in some way that they had not already done so?

While I was on my way to vote the other day (I voted early in NC) I spoke to a woman who had decided not to vote. Her inclination was to vote for McCain and she very much disliked Obama's policies but she was concerned about suggestions she had heard that there would be racial violence if McCain was elected. She decided that if she didn't vote whatever happened wouldn't be her fault. In the unlikely event that Obama wins NC by one vote it will prove the efficacy of sending one's surrogates out to Mau Mau the media since that one vote will have been obtained through intimidation.

Welcome to Philadelphia... Unfortunately, this story is not at all surprising to me. Having grown up in the area this behavior is all too common. Remember this is the city that brought you Mumia and the MOVE group who I am very familiar with. Also do not forget the former Mayor John Street and his brother Milton. Milton was given sweetheart contracts for the concessions at the newly built Philly Airport. The City has become a hopeless mess. They have been trying to institute "Regionalization" and have been trying to figure out a way to get the four suburban counties to send money into that urban cesspool. It is only eclipsed by Camden NJ.

/CA is so ahead of the curve, with this banning Gay marriage stuff.

Meanwhile in South Carolina, voters have the opportunity to vote on this gem today:

AMENDMENT 1:

Must Section 33, Article III of the Constitution of this State be amended so as to delete the provision that no unmarried woman shall legally consent to sexual intercourse who shall not have attained the age of fourteen years?

Although in today's light, this bit from the SC State constitution is embarrassing, it was a very early attempt at establishing a legal age of consent, and retrospectively decades ahead of its time.

And in case anyone wants to swing by SC and get in a last stab at legal pedophilia, OTHER state law has estabished a practical age of consent of 18 years, the same as every other state. The point of deleting this bit from the SC Constitution is to strengthen that other law!

The funny thing is that I know my vote, while heartfelt, was all but useless, since it will be swamped by the Obamanoid majority in my neighborhood.

But so are the votes of most of the Obamanoids that stood in line with me and surrounded me at the polling place--and I don't think they realize that their votes, too, are useless.

New York--New York City, at any rate--is not really in play. It will go overwhelmingly Democrat, because it always does, and probably the state will too. The huge Obamanoid turnout is, therefore, total waste.

It is in the battleground states that votes count, on both sides. Good luck and G-dspeed to the Lizards, and to the other McCain voters, who are voting there.

Every vote still matters.
Bush was effectively denied legitimacy during his first term of office because of his narrow margin of victory and loss of the popular vote.
While no matter what happens, Obama isn't going to get the same sort of press excoriation that Bush did, the lower his absolute vote count, the lesser his mandate.

AZ is one of the states that requires a government issued ID to vote. Why all states don't do that is beyond me. I think absentee ballots have the potential to be abused more than walk in votes. You would think that a country as technologically advanced as ours could come up with a safe and secure way to vote.......I would say we are not even close to that right now.

I'd prefer using paper ballots and indelible ink on our fingertips. We don't need technology to solve every perceived problems. Sometimes simplicity has it's advantages.

1st, this isn't an issue of IF the Gov should get involved with marriage. As it is NOW, they do. If you wish to put something on the ballot that states that the Gov will no longer have anything to do with ALL marriage, then fine. I'll consider that issue when it comes up.

That being said, the State HAS to be involved in marriage if it is going to give benefits to those that are married. Remove benefits, and I'm with you...sort of.

The normal response is to just let "Marriage" be a choice between the populace and keep the Gov out of it. This sounds good till you put it into practice. Who would be in charge of marriage? The "Church"? The strongest option without Government involvement is to leave it up to "The Church". But, then which "Churches" are acceptable? All of them? Satanism? White Power?, Rasta? etc.? Then what do you do about those that are Atheists, or have no "church"? Leave it up to the individual? In that instance, a person could marry his dog and get benefits, marry 3 other people and get benefits, marry his best friend, his sister, his brother, etc. It never ends. Maybe it shouldn't end; maybe people should have the right to marry their dog. But if this is the case, then marriage is meaningless.

Not being in CA myself the one good thing about Prop 8 is that it might help drive a much larger voter turnout, thus potentially upsetting an Obama blowout.

I voted YES, only because it under minds the purpose of voting, if the majority of the people of California don't want to allow same sex marriages, as the did in 2003, so be it. If the people vote and it turns out they do want to allow it so be it. I cant sit idly by and watch 4 judges overturn the will of the people it ruins the whole concept of a majority vote.

we got a phone call that there was intimidation going on. i walked up to the door, two gentlemen in black panther guard, one brandishing a nightstick, standing in front of the door. they closed ranks as i walked up. i am a veteran, that does not scare me. i went inside and found full- watchers, they said they had been here for an hour — i went inside and found poll-watchers, they said that they had said not to let people outside because black people are going to win no matter what. at that point, i spoke to him, we would not get into a fistfight, i said, and i called the police.

Remember, we now live out side philly . . . . . , where were you when the MOVE houses burned?

Most nudists here in the States are mundane, ordinary, run-of-the-mill people. Fat, thin, slightly-chubby, and everything in between. And a true nudist is someone who sees the nude body as about as ordinary and non-sexual as a fence-post or a boulder. No nymphomaniacs.

In fact, a nymphomaniac would likely be tossed out on his or her ear post haste.

Perhaps you know something I don't being in CA but the Mormon church, so far as I know and of which I'm a member, does not support creationism taught in schools (and is rather lukewarm about it in the church as well, understanding symbolism is a large part of the Bible). Having said that, I'm sure there are those supporting Prop 8 that also support creationism and if that's where your opposition lies then I completely understand and respect the basis of your decision - not that you're looking for understanding and respect, just sayin'.

Basically I pointed at myself and said: "That's me". No id or anything else required. I could have pointed at anyone else in the world with a male name and done the same. I doubt there will be a lot of fraud around here, but still. Its a bit disconcerting to have to provide an photo id for a million other transactions, but not to vote.

fear mongering? Um, I watched in horror as first graders were taken on a field trip to their lesbian teacher's wedding.

It's fear-mongering because (a) the school in question was a limited-enrollment "charter" school, meaning that all the parents had "opted in" to sending their kids there; and (b) the field trip itself was organized by the parents of the first-graders -- it wasn't a decision made by school faculty.

The New Black Panthers are nothing to take lightly. They paid us a visit in ATL wehn a police drug raid went bad and the officers killed an elderly lady.
Since I use the commutter train service here to go back and forth to work I got to meet some of these guys up close. Fortunately the police also stepped up there presence and no the problem didn't get out of hand.

Then we need to be ready if they start making trouble today. the police need to hit them hard and fast. First sign of trouble from them, start locking them up. Any Panther should be considered a potential terrorist today, and dealt with accordingly.

re: #187 Charles

A good common sense answer. However, the challenge is that according to the courts here in CA, parents have very limited rights beyond keeping their kids out of the school, changing from public to private schools, or home schooling in terms of opting out of things that they hold as inappropriate. For many, these options are rather extreme - if they cannot afford private school tuitions or are able to home school.

I don't agree with your position on 8, but I also share the same concern and opposition to forcing creationism into the schools as a 'science'. My issue around 8 stands far stronger around the entire process that this issue has taken since 60% of the population voted to define marriage in CA as between one man and one woman and 4 judges decided that this majority was insufficient. I have always said that at some point, if it is the will of the people, that the word can be redefined. I personally don't see the need to redefine the word or provide / define a 'right' when there is no right being denied. In CA, same sex couples have exactly the same rights via civil union as heterosexual couples have in marriage - they are just called different things. Calling it a civil union is not discriminatory nor denying them anything other than redefining what marriage is. I am also concerned that we are also, via the judges ruling, defining same-sex marriages as a protected or super 'right' - with those in same-sex marriages being elevated to a higher status than any other married couple.

If No for 8 wins, then the will of the people will have spoken.

I have a great deal of respect for both. They have been together for more than 10 years and have a very stable and good relationship. I wish them well, they deserve it. By the way their marriage was done as a civil union without regilious overtones. So I am confilicted about the whole gay marriage thing.

What I found interesting is that the machine manages to display all of the rest of the presidential candidates on the next screen - in large type format. At the time, I just assumed it was because of the large type format. Now, in hindsight, I wonder if it was intentional to have Obama Biden on their own screen.

WARNING: this is how Election Day is going to go down. Do not get sucked in, Eeyores!

We don’t want to beat a dead horse here (or, donkey, as the case may be), but we need to remind you all, once more, not to be Eeyores today.

The Obamedia is going to do to you what they did to Hillary supporters during the primaries — they are going to lie, and float all sorts of incorrect exit polls, and start revving up to declare Obama the winner.

Drudge Report — mark our words — is going to run that flashing red/blue siren he loves to report McCain losing all sorts of traditional Republican states around midday. He’s going to get all of you Eeyores hyperventilating.

The goal of the Obamedia is to depress you so much you don’t turn out to vote. Our friend Astrid always falls for this garbage, and we know she is not all alone. She’ll be miserable all day because she’s never learned to turn out the media and just chill out.

This is going to go down just like Super Tuesday - where the media claimed Obama would win California, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and others…but Clinton won every state we predicted she’d win.

In fact, we were right about every state in the primaries except Missouri, which Clinton lost by less than 1%. Otherwise, we were spot-on.

So, we know you Eeyores are going to drive everyone in your lives crazy today. You are going to panic and wet yourselves and email/call/bother all of your friends and relatives all day. You’ll forward bogus polls and terrible links to everyone, and depress people left and right.

We have no idea why you people behave this way and really wish you would stop. Because we’ve been through this with you since New Hampshire and just think it’s all so ridiculous.

Here’s our advice: take a break from news today — consider everything you hear to be lies. Watch some cool movies (our favorite of all time is The Contender with Joan Allen), eat a nice sandwich, have a nap (or two), then tune into the Election Results around 10pm or so CST to see the final tallies add up and wait for a winner.

The rest of the day will just drive you over the edge — and then you will spread this Eeyore gloom and doom to everyone else, because that seems to be what you do.

We will never understand that.

But, we know you’ll do it, because you’ve consistently done it since January. It’s very predictable.

Just like the election results.

McCain wins 286 to 252…and America gets its first female Vice President.

And on November 5th, we start campaigning for 2012.

re: #324 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

I'm voting yes on it for several reasons. Partially as a response to the judicial activism which overturned the previous legislatation which had been voted on and passed, partially because I feel it infringes on the separation of Church and State and finally because due to my personal beliefs that allowing this is a "slippery slope" which could allow other groups to use it as a precedent.

I don't like the judicial activists that overturned the earlier vote either. But if you think that's a slippery slope, I'm much more afraid of empowering the groups who are promoting this constitutional amendment.

Just got back from voting. There was a big SUV in the parking lot (Methodist Church, we vote in the meeting hall) and it had an Obummer bumper sticker on it. :-( When I walked closer, Barry was pictured with a clown nose and it called him an a**clown, big letters stating vote McCain-Palin. That was the guy ahead of me in line, no one else in there.

I asked if it was stupid to ask about heavy voter turnout and the old dear practically jumped at that. "Oh yes! We've had 105 people already and that's what we usually get for the whole day." (There's only 186 people in town.)

All of our poll workers are elderly/retired townies. They are always smiling, and there are usually brownies and cupcakes galore. Voting here is one of the most conflict free things to do. I have always enjoyed it immensely. We have never, in my memory, had a poll issue here. Everyone knows everyone, police, poll workers and citizens. It is pretty innocuous. I love small towns.

The overwhelming majority had already voted by mail. The registration list and a worker confirmed it. Of course the average age here is 77 so not too surprising.

I didn't have my registration post card with me so was asked for my ID. Woah! first time ever - I loved it - boy did she catch hell from everyone else for asking.

My Jewish neighbors of course voted for The 0ne and asked who I voted for - I responded why 0bama of course because I want to see the downfall of Israel. (they know I am Jewish by DNA) - but it took them back - I told them about the latest revelation [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

1. We need ID requirement. It's racist to assume that people of color don't participate in the legal ongoings of American society. That they don't have bank accounts or rent apartments, have legal employment or drive cars. That they don't rent dvds or cash checks. What are they? Lumps who live only under the table? Sheesh!

2. Anyone blocking a polling station for any reason other than an emergency spends time in the pokey.

3. Laws requiring all campaign donations to be checked for legality.

Those three things would give us freer/fairer elections.

Buzz, your vote is NEVER a waste. It is a tribute to every soldier who died to ensure your right to cast it. I live in liberal Massachusetts. I have always voted straight republican, so, my vote has never "counted" either. I continue to cast every vote, from dog catcher to president, to thank those selflessly brave men and women, first and foremost.

It is in the battleground states that votes count, on both sides. Good luck and G-dspeed to the Lizards, and to the other McCain voters, who are voting there.

re: #357 buzzsawmonkey

I don't know which side is for or against same-sex marriage in the California proposition, being on the other side of the country. And I could argue either the pro or the con side of legalizing it, given a five-minute running head start, since I know some good arguments on both sides.

But the "changing the definition of marriage" argument is bogus, in that there is a distinction between marriage as a civil arrangement which provides for certain legal benefits by presumption or default--i.e., legal marriage, which is what is being debated--and marriage as it is viewed in a religious denomination.

I oppose any effort whatsoever to impose any requirement that any religious denomination recognize same-sex marriage, unless it so chooses. But religious sanction is wholly distinct from a legal status granted under civil law.

And, respectfully, that arguement is bogus in light of California law that already has state gay-marriage in the form of civil unions.

405 kynna  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 10:18:09am

re: #357 buzzsawmonkey

This is a more complicated situation than just making gay marriage legal. The problem is that there was a vote and it didn't come out the way certain groups wanted so instead of trying to come back and convince anyone politically, they got a judge to go around it.

So this is an effort to protect that initial vote.

I disagree also with the results of the initial vote but I am loathe to give support to judicial work-arounds. So this is a proposition that has me distressed. If it's defeated, will it make it easier for judges to go around the citizens? And if it's not defeated, I'm not happy with that either.

In any case, all I'm saying is it's a lot more difficult than it looks on the surface. I know how I'll vote, but I'd be holding my nose either way. XP

I'm voting NO on Proposition 8 in California, because I really don't like the groups promoting it -- they're exactly the same people who are trying to force a far-right creationist agenda into schools.

I voted NO on it because I feel it is codifying discrimination into law. This time in the CA State Constitution. Which BTW, is a far too easy thing to do and a source of endless problems for this State. But your reason works for me too.

Boy scouts
Salvation Army
Private insurance
Catholic hospitals

etc

431 subsailor68  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 10:31:29am

I do believe that McCain/Palin will win tonight. There are some reasons I've come to this:

The polls. As mentioned above, polls are the product of those who create/weight them. In at least the last two elections, exit polls in particular have been way, way off base.

The concern. Republicans/Conservatives are fearful (including me) of the socialist tendencies spelled out in the Obama campaign.

The PUMAs. These folks appear to be coming out to vote - and it's clear they're not voting for Obama (or they wouldn't be PUMAs, right?).

The Bradley effect. I read somewhere that a study done on this found that it wasn't Bradley's skin that was the issue, it was the fact that his proposals/policies were too far left for the voter once he or she got into the booth.

The Democrats. Other than the far left, I can't help but think that moderates may feel that a vote for Obama now may mean at least eight years before a candidate they'd be more comfortable with (e.g. Hillary) will be available. However, they may think a single term McCain administration - due to age, could move their hopes closer...figuring they could see a Clinton Palin race.

I may be wrong on all this, but I certainly hope not. :-)

Robert Spencer, meanwhile, has gone completely off the rails, is letting people post links to anti-LGF hate sites, and is spewing hatred and vitriol at me that I almost can't believe.

I won't visit his site. Someone sent me copies of the comments being posted there. From now on, I won't even read those.

He's dropped his mask of moderation completely.

Last time I looked there, 'Lionheart' was all over the threads, explaining to the gathered congregation (whom Spencer has led from the darkness into light - yes they actually say things like that there) that the BNP are super-cool and not racists at all.

From what I've seen Spencer is ultimately nothing but a nasty puffed up little jerk with atrocious judgement.

If California law "already has state gay-marriage in the form of civil unions," then call same-sex marriage "marriage" and have done with it.

If you have a problem with that, then you are telling less than the truth when you say they are equivalent, and deep down you know it.

1
1)I am not sure that they are equivalent, but I believe so and am not opposed to them being so in regards to the cited benefits that gays are often requested regarding insurance, hospital visits, etc.
2) I think words matter, and I believe that deep down and at the surface, but thanks for the free psychoanalysis and better luck next time.

re: #339 Charles

The point, Charles, is to keep separate any nefarious intentions of the religious right to inject any further faith based agendas into the public arena from the social and political ramifications of same-sex marriage, a concept opposed by many on non-religious grounds. Californians voted once on this, and had it smacked down by four judges legislating an imputed right for a protected class into the California Constitution. If this fails, there is no legal barrier to extending the definition further, probably in the direction of plural marriages. I always consider the Law of Unintended Consequences when voting on societal change. . . think No Fault divorce in 1969

A friend or ours and his significant other just went to California to be married on Monday. I have a great deal of respect for both. They have been together for more than 10 years and have a very stable and good relationship. I wish them well, they deserve it. By the way their marriage was done as a civil union without regilious overtones. So I am confilicted about the whole gay marriage thing.

Viking6, I'm a homo (surprise, everybody!) and based on what you wrote, my suggestion is that you should make it known to people around you that you're willing to strongly support civil-union legislation, but that you don't support "Marriage with a capital M" for same-sex couples. And be ready to explain why, in your opinion, same-sex civil-union laws are sufficient, while same-sex marriage laws would go too far.

I don't know what aggravates me more. The fact that suppression of the military vote happens in the first place, the fact that the media ignores it, or the fact that the Republicans have had power for most of these past few years, with the military in a particularly favored position being wartime and all, and the problem wasn't fixed long before this.

WOW.

The end of "White Supremacy"? Does this mean the end of Affirmative Action, Minority Assistance, Welfare, Blah, blah, blah?

NO.

It means the beginning of the GREAT SOCIALISTIC EXPERIMENT, REPARATIONS, THE END OF THE AMERICAN ERA, and

the beginning of the end.

Not here.
Not now.
No way.

My roots were here before the US became. We fought for the Independence reporting to GW himself, Civil War (Yankee) reporting to US Grant himself, and WWII and a tank killer in Europe, among the many times my heritage to part.

What I do know about this country is that we always demand our freedom, privacy, ability to do what we want, when we want.

We broke from monarchical rule. We separated and refused slavery. We destroyed totalitarianism.

We will defeat this Harvard suit, his disgusting cronies of ilk, and the minions who only seek "payback".

No, we will be the New Monkey Wrench Gang: fighting for freedom, forcing accountability, punishing irresponsible behavior.

I know this for fact. It is in my blood and the blood of my fellow countrymen.

I love this country way too much to allow it to fall into the meek.

I love this country way much more than these elites who want to "transform" this nation into a system that cannot handle the demand that they cannot possibly supply.

This country is way to big a machine to be altered overnight.

As said by another:

"Fight! Fight! Fight!"

[PS: I dig the spell check!]

459 Athos  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 11:07:19am

re: #451 arf

I'm with you - but remember, in this country even national elections like this one are fundamentally local. The local town / city / county determines and controls the process. The Federal level defines basically who can vote and the election process for the Pres, VP, and Congress. For the controls and improvements in handling absentee ballots it has to happen at the local level. The problem with this is that there are many at the local level who are not impartial bureaucrats who happen to be members of a political party but those who act on behalf of the political party they are affiliated with.

This means different standards. Military members overseas have challenges getting their absentee ballots to count, but people without addresses or identification proving they are eligible to vote are given more consideration. A news organization is accused of voter suppression, but not two Black Panthers guarding a polling location.....we can't ask for ID's or work to ensure that those who reside in 2 states don't vote illegally in each - but trying to prevent community organizing organizations from stuffing the ballots / registrations is considered 'fascism'.

These are military votes. Does the Federal government have no influence over this? Does Virginia of all places not have any pull with these election boards? The military has sort of a special status with people right now, one would think an elected official would not want to be perceived as anti-military.

But what do I know........heck.

There was a project in Illinois back, about 20-some years ago. Someone with authority, I guess the Governor, but forget details now, authorized a downstate judge to play a crooked Chicago lawyer (some say I repear myself with that phrase). The idea was, he was supposed to play along, pay off the judges and state's attorneys, and collect the evidence.

The expose hit the Chicago papers. The payoffs, where he handed the judges an envelope full of money and the names of people the lawyer expected to find not guilty. The clerks who had to put on the robes and play judge because the real judge was passed out stone cold drunk.

It cleaned up the Chicago courts for a good two weeks or so I imagine.

Why isn't there something like that with the elections? Seems it would be easier than paying off judges. Immunize people to go to the polls, say they want to throw elections, register the nonexistant people, vote multiple times, snowbird votes Florida and back north, register the mentally incompetent Alzheimer's nursing home residents and "help" them vote, only the actual voting could be voided so no damage.

Demonstrate how easy it is to do.

But seems to me, it's never done. Maybe both sides want crooked elections........

I completely disagree with this guy saying folks at the polling station can wear whatever they want. I would assume neonazi attire and KKK sheets would not be acceptable. So it would follow that the uniform of a group that has the stated purpose to wipeout an entire race shouldn't be acceptable. It is amazing what people overlook and turn a blind ignorant eye toward.
