Obama thanks ‘gracious’ press.

“But you guys have been gracious and understanding,” he said, following conservative criticism of the press for its coverage of Obama, as his plane prepared to depart after a huge rally in Virginia for Chicago.

“It’s been a good long ride with all of you,” the Illinois senator said. “Whatever happens tomorrow (Tuesday) it’s going to be extraordinary and you guys have shared this process with us.”

Understatement of the year.

So I had to run some errands, and I only passed one polling place (I already voted earlier today at my own). Some guy was standing outside with a huge sign of a local candidate for federal office, yelling at the top of his lungs and holding the sign and garnering attention, but carefully outside the required buffer zone.

Very interesting, I must say.

30 freeus  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 10:16:22am

Please read this and you will see that what is not being reported is the anger with Obama's media. It is a very good explanation of why not to trust the early media calls for PA and VA.

[Link: seanmalstrom.wordpress.com...]

It gives you a solid insight to why the polls are wrong and why McCain/Palin can win and should win.

Remember the term "broken glass Conservatives"? The giant is awake and going out in droves. The early voting and large turnout is favoring McCain.

I have for 3 months been seeing everything Malstrom speaks about. PUMAS are begging us to vote in mass because they see a win for McCain if we just will turn out and vote. Americans do not like being told who is going to win and they are very mad at the media. There are so many indicators that McCain can pull this out if we will just vote.

Read the link and be of good cheer. And turn off your tv. LOL!

Very interesting that Obama said they had shared the PROCESS with him. It's not the choice of word itself. It's that process is a totally different category of word than, say, campaign or election.

They shared the task, effort or load?
They shared the goal?
They shared the commitment?

42 Cognito  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 10:18:57am

Just for context, here's the preceding sentence, which does add some understanding of what Obama was talking about:

Also thanking the media for expressions of condolence following the death of his grandmother, Obama acknowledged there had been "sometimes friction" between the campaign and the press.

But if any 'friction' he's experienced has been minimal at most. (Discounting crazy people raving about him being Islamic or foreign-born.)

My hope is that this predicted press war will come about. The press is a fickle, fickle, thing. And Obama -- despite his sleekness -- has revealed in little glimpses his animosity toward a free press.

It sounds impossible, now, I know. Should be interesting to watch, though.

Just to reiterate my comments in the last thread...

This is ridiculous. Welcome to the beginning of the United States of America strolling slowly toward the United Socialist States of the Republic of America. Just the fact that black panthers can stand outside of a polling place with a baton is disgusting. I'd hate to fathom what the response would be should a white racist organization stood outside of a polling place with a big stick.

Truly disgusting...

The Fourth of November

Remember, remember, this fourth of November,
The radicals’ treasonous plot.
I know of no reason the radicals’ treason
Should e’er be forgiv’n or forgot.

The Sixties were waning, and Leftists were claiming
That radical changes were due.
Their Marxist solution was armed revolution:
The Weathermen made their debut.

The radicals raged on the national stage, and
Horrific explosions ensued.
Their bombs were dramatic, but also erratic;
They sometimes killed radicals, too.

The Leftists grew older, the underground, colder,
And so they came in from the cold.
“Subvert from within – in the long run, we’ll win,” said
The Leftists, determined and bold.

And thus it began – this nefarious plan – and
The radicals slowly took charge:
Complete infiltration of all education;
The long institutional march.

The journalist schools would produce useful fools, for
The Left would need media shills.
And Hollywood, too, would assist in the coup, with
Its slick propagandizing skills.

“Community action” would build a new faction;
’Twould organize proles on the street.
A smooth politician would front for the mission,
And run for the president’s seat.

The radicals’ goal, which they proudly extol, is
A communist U.S. of A.
Collectivist schemes lead to brutal regimes, and
For this do the radicals pray.

But Jefferson’s aim, with the Charters he framed, was
To guard individual rights.
And “redistribution” was not a solution,
But one of the evils to fight.

So let us remember, this fourth of November,
Just what is at stake on this date.
Will Jefferson’s dream, or the radicals’ scheme, now
Determine America’s fate?

Don't believe the polls

You take a simple random sample of 1000 balls from an urn containing 120,000,000 red and blue balls, and your sample shows 450 red balls and 550 blue balls. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the true proportion of blue balls in the urn."

…Works pretty well if you're interested in hypothetical colored balls in hypothetical giant urns, or survival rates of plants in a controlled experiment, or defects in a batch of factory products. It may even work well if you're interested in blind cola taste tests. But what if the thing you are studying doesn't quite fit the balls & urns template?

• What if 40% of the balls have personally chosen to live in an urn that you legally can't stick your hand into?
• What if 50% of the balls who live in the legal urn explicitly refuse to let you select them?
• What if the balls inside the urn are constantly interacting and talking and arguing with each other, and can decide to change their color on a whim?
• What if you have to rely on the balls to report their own color, and some unknown number are probably lying to you?
• What if you've been hired to count balls by a company who has endorsed blue as their favorite color?
• What if you have outsourced the urn-ball counting to part-time temp balls, most of whom happen to be blue?
• What if the balls inside the urn are listening to you counting out there, and it affects whether they want to be counted, and/or which color they want to be?

(And what, I wonder, if all around you, every day, you are told by all of the coolest, hippest, prettiest balls that your color is mean, irrelevant, unpopular, un-cool, evil, old, incompetent and probably racist? Would you stick to your guns in the face of that, or keep your mouth shut and show ‘em when the curtain closes?)

Iowahawk concludes:

If one or more of the above statements are true, then the formula for margin of error simplifies to
Margin of Error = Who the hell knows?

The moral of this midterm for all would-be pollsters: if you are really interested in how many of us red and blue balls there are in this great big urn, sit back and relax until Tuesday, and let us show our true colors.

Well said, buddy. And finally, this, from Zombietime.com:

It may very well be that an army of glum, dispirited and pessimistic conservatives will reluctantly trudge to the polls on November 4, each one imagining they are the only remaining person in the entire country voting for McCain, and lo and behold -- they'll turn out to be a silent majority after all.

This was stolen from Bil Whittle"s site...He got it from Iowahawk

It really is amazing the differences between the right and the left. There are some signs on a fence not that far from my house that just happens to be right across the street from a house that simply has campaign signs posted (Republican signs). The fence signs are all for 0bama, but right in the middle of the signs (all hand made) that says "Palin is an Idiot!"

Voter ID requirement is alike a border fence. Just something that I assumed we had all along, and cannot fathom any arguements against that aren't transparent justification for fraud.

Which is exactly why Democrats are so dead set against voter ID requirements. Makes it harder to commit voter fraud - which seems to be the only way many dems can win an election.

(Posted this on the previous thread, but a little too late.)

I do believe that McCain/Palin will win tonight. There are some reasons I've come to this:

The polls. As mentioned above, polls are the product of those who create/weight them. In at least the last two elections, exit polls in particular have been way, way off base.

The concern. Republicans/Conservatives are fearful (including me) of the socialist tendencies spelled out in the Obama campaign.

The PUMAs. These folks appear to be coming out to vote - and it's clear they're not voting for Obama (or they wouldn't be PUMAs, right?).

The Bradley effect. I read somewhere that a study done on this found that it wasn't Bradley's skin that was the issue, it was the fact that his proposals/policies were too far left for the voter once he or she got into the booth.

The Democrats. Other than the far left, I can't help but think that moderates may feel that a vote for Obama now may mean at least eight years before a candidate they'd be more comfortable with (e.g. Hillary) will be available. However, they may think a single term McCain administration - due to age, could move their hopes closer...figuring they could see a Clinton Palin race.

I may be wrong on all this, but I certainly hope not. :-)

Zzzz.oops.
I was up at 5:00 AM this morning and on the road driving shut-ins and wheel-less people to the polls here in SW Va. So far we're looking at a record turnout.
The weather's been warm enough, so folks haven't minded lines outside.
Thanks to a local funeral parlor, we've got plenty of chairs. And thanks to a local diner, all of the earlybird voters had free coffee. Lord knows I needed that!
Mr. Wolf took over for me at noon-thirty and he has a BUS that someone lent us! (I wasn't about to try driving that thing along mountain roads myself, so I just used our gas-guzzling van.) I'm on call just in case they need me later on today.
We've got six people out there putting flyers on cars at work places reminding folks to vote on their way home from work.
Is it naptime yet?

Just got back from voting. My polling place was a Baptist Church in a Blue State, and it was empty. Took me about 3 minutes to vote, no lines. Voted against an early voting amendment to our State Constitution, unfortunately I don't see that one getting voted down.

I just talked to one of my best Team McCain sources who told me that heading into today all the key battleground polls were moving hard and fast in their direction. The source, hardly a perma-optimist, thinks it will be a long night, but that McCain is going to win. So add this with the new Battleground poll (Obama +1.9 only) and the rising stock market...

Is this credible or just chearleading? I'm not a huge McCain fan and would really look forward to 2010 after 2 years of Obama-Pelosi, but every day I hear something scarey about what the Democrats want to do with 100% control...make abortion a civil right, the attacks on small and medium sized business, the judges who will judge based on skin color, Fairness (sic) Doctrine, the attacks on any energy source other then solar and maybe wind, and on and on and on.

Reportedly, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Sean ''Diddy'' Combs, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Ben Affleck are among those advised to skip the Chicago festivities and focus on attending the expected Obama inauguration in January.

''There really only needs to be one star in Grant Park, and that's Barack,'' said the source, a high-profile elected official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, since he's not authorized to speak for the campaign on this issue.

''There will be plenty of time for a new President Obama to be surrounded by famous fans, all hopeful about a new administration.''

Very interesting that Obama said they had shared the PROCESS with him. It's not the choice of word itself. It's that process is a totally different category of word than, say, campaign or election.

They shared the task, effort or load?
They shared the goal?
They shared the commitment?

I also thought the "process" word choice was interesting. Perhaps he was referring to the process of converting from capitalism to socialism?

Does anyone else kind of feel like we're down by 9 points, with the ball, with 4:00 on the clock in the 4th Quarter, driving? We need two scores, but there's time and it's doable. Not "super" likely, but doable with proper execution and a little bit of luck.

I feel like I do when my team is in this situation--realistic but very hopeful and ready for something great to happen--we'll know soon enough I suppose, but we're definitely moving the ball down field for that first score--

Just got back from my polling station and I have to report this interesting event. The old timer next to me in the kiosk (think of an X and between the lines is a ledge to fill in your sheet) leans over and says "Hey, mac, how do you work this?".

Now as far as I know the voting system was changed twenty years ago to a card reader system.

"You connect the lines next to your choice to make a solid line. Been a while since you voted?"

"Yup, never really got too excited about it, but I spent five years fighting the Nazis and I'm not about to let one from Chicago take over this country".

"Good luck, if you have more questions you should ask the lady up front"

For some reason I had hard a hard time seeing my ballot as I filled it in. He finished before I did so I suspect he only voted in one race. My state is a McCain lock but I can only hope that many more like that old guy around the nation.

Kerry beat Bush by 144,000 votes in the whole state. I think McCain will get more than that between the PUMAs, the racists, the rednecks and the bitter-clingers.

It's turning into an Obama Nation.
I for one welcome our new overlords.

I can't help but fear that that is only the beginning. Dismantles nuclear defenses, builds a"civilian" force, ruins the economy, shreds the Constitution... and for what? Socialism isn't just enough a good reason. I truly think The Plan is to insure that islamic domination comes easy to the western world. Other than commies, look who all his other fellow travelers are. Children singing obama is going to change the world. This is totally frightening.

Precisely -- as if he was acknowledging the press as a conscious, committed, partner.

My wife likes to watch GMA and Today as she gets ready in the morning. And as such them on today. I found it almost sickening that they were all sitting around and discussing how Obama was going to govern with majorities in both houses. It seemed as though they were speaking on Wednesday and the election was over, with the only thing left to be determined is if the Dems have 59 or 60 senate seats. This of course was before voting STARTED in many places.

Would anyone care to help me start a "Freedom FROM the Press Society"?

Yes! That's what the lizards are.

How many Union soldiers died for this shit?

The question is, how many American troops in general died for this shit? Free and fair elections are our right, paid for by their blood. I don't care if it's skinheads or Black Panthers - they have no right to stand there and intimidate American voters.

My understanding is that the Panther with the nightstick was "moved along" by the police...I think the other guy must still be there.

I just drove a 102 year-old woman to vote this morning-a real pistol! "This country's going to hell in a handbasket!" "I voted for Hoover." "I lived in Japan for 4 years teaching them how to make things" "If anybody tells you they knew MacArthur, they're lying!" And then something about his gay lover dying. Couldn't quite tell. Who do you want to vote for Loreen? "Just mark all the Republicans!" She was a hoot and a half-

Well, maybe a little. Without trying to get into his head (ick), I would guess his "process" word choice is in reference to the change/hope mantra and he's thanking the media for assisting/helping in initiating that change/hope process. However, to me it does sound a little like a socialist/revolutionary code word.

Just returned from voting. Took my 23 year old daughter with me. She had just gotton off the phone with her "dad," and his girlfriend. He has not worked in 20 years, girlfriend has never worked. Both living off the gvt.
Dad asked her to send him money. He has a Phd in phylosophy. My daughter is a single mom with a 1 year old and a GED.

Of course they are all excited to go vote for Obama today. But she said they both sounded so completly smashed they would not ever make it to the polls.

That was at 11:00 o'clock in the morning.

Except they'll find a way to project their failures on everyone who didn't buy their crapola. They'll claim that we're racist for not voting for Obama, ignoring his socialist agenda and plans to bankrupt entire industries in pursuit of his objectives.

They can project away, but we're not buyin' their bull anymore.

I just saw an Obama storm trooper (or storm troofer) in front of a polling place in Philly on Fox. He was there for "security" in a black panther / storm trooper military style uniform. One good thing if Obama wins, maybe he will be able to get his teeth fixed. He was not intimidated by Fox news, or presumably the police.

Welcome to the future of the United States of Obama, if heaven forbid, the 0 wins.

213 Fionn MacCumhaill  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 12:11:29pm

Voted this morning here in north Texas. Very low turnout. Hardly any political signs out this election. Last time, the signs were all over everywhere, and were 80% Democrat, but Bush got 70% of the vote. This time around, the road to work where I could see 50 signs last election has only the one Obama sign.

I took a trip to another town about an hour's drive away (Allen, TX) last week and saw many signs - McCain signs outnumbering Obama signs by a 10-1 margin.

214 Quad Mocha Matti  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 1:58:18pm

Charles, you should have an option where lizards can both up-ding and down-ding a posting, and make it on a scale so that the dings don't cancel each other out. This is a perfect example. I'm amused and disgusted, yet at different intensities.

re: #30 freeus

Wonderful, wonderful article. Interesting, well-reasoned, and insightful. And the best hope for McCain I've read yet.

It's so funny that when I finally gave up being a liberal (the far-left anti-Semitism, anti-Israel, and sheer meanness that I witnessed in San Francisco were my turning points) is that when I finally started listening to conservatives, much of what they say is sensible, reasonable, and logical. When I go back to listening to liberals... it's all anger, fury, hatred. Sometimes when I want to make myself sick I go read the comments section at Salon. I just haven't seen any left wing articles of the quality of this link.
