Election Day, Thread 6

Politics | Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 1:40:41 pm PST

Just back from the polling corral, where I cast my vote for the person I most trust to bring America the change we need, the Green Party’s Cynthia McKinney.

Just kidding! Had you going there, didn’t I?

Gosh, it felt good to cast my one wee vote.

I betcha it would feel even better if I drove to Nevada and cast another vote ... and then to CA to cast a third vote. Maybe not. My moral compass would be awry.

I'm a Republican, not a Democrat. One vote for me. The cheaters are on the other side.

21 gmsc  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 1:46:16pm

Funniest "voter suppression" claim of the day (so far): One guy in New York claims voter suppression because the machine wouldn't let him write in 2 different candidates for president.

I do understand many polling places aren't allowing that - soeone should get the word out!

I voted this morning. The lines at my precinct were not so bad--about the same as previous Presidential elections.

When I received my ballot, one of those forms where you fill in the little ovals, I filled it out at the closest desk, which happened to belong to another precinct.

The election volunteers freaked out when I handed them my ballot, because I had filled it out at another precinct table, must be null and void! They had a huddle but in the end decided that it was still kosher (whew!)

Are the Exit Pollsters Up To Old Tricks?

I noticed this account of an exit pollster in Stafford, Virginia:

08:32 – AP doing exit polling in Stafford. Talking 4 to 1 to minorities over whites at a Republican precinct (Falmouth). Expect it to be skewed. Don’t trust the exit polls as they start to trickle out.

Only an anecdote, but not promising. Are the exit pollsters aiming for egg on their faces two presidential races in a row?

Five things to watch tonight

Two states draw frequent mention from the experts: Ohio and Florida, yet again.

But there are also a few other states that are often cited as possible trouble spots in the event of record turnout: Colorado, Georgia and Virginia. Technical failures in Denver in November 2006 led thousands of prospective voters to leave polling places without voting. In Georgia, stricter voter identification requirements could lead to problems this year. In Virginia, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People recently filed suit, accusing the state of not allocating enough voting machines, poll workers and polling places, particularly in precincts with a large minority population.

Not a peep about Pennsylvania. I'm going with Hillbuzz- PA's the state to watch.

66 imploder  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 1:53:51pm

Why is it that I could watch election coverage on the TV last presidential election cycle, but this year I can't? As a matter of fact, I haven't watched news in a week.

So which DVD should it be, Aquateen Hungerforce season II, The Great Santini, or the Spongebob Squarepants movie?

67 opnion  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 1:53:59pm

McCain has somehow got to pull this out. With all the fraud & intimidation in this election, try to imagine how rigged the system will be in the midterm & next general election if this mob gets in.

Maybe. WARNING: this is how Election Day is going to go down. Do not get sucked in, Eeyores!

We don’t want to beat a dead horse here (or, donkey, as the case may be), but we need to remind you all, once more, not to be Eeyores today.

The Obamedia is going to do to you what they did to Hillary supporters during the primaries — they are going to lie, and float all sorts of incorrect exit polls, and start revving up to declare Obama the winner.

Drudge Report — mark our words — is going to run that flashing red/blue siren he loves to report McCain losing all sorts of traditional Republican states around midday. He’s going to get all of you Eeyores hyperventilating.

The goal of the Obamedia is to depress you so much you don’t turn out to vote. Our friend Astrid always falls for this garbage, and we know she is not all alone. She’ll be miserable all day because she’s never learned to turn out the media and just chill out.

This is going to go down just like Super Tuesday - where the media claimed Obama would win California, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and others…but Clinton won every state we predicted she’d win.

In fact, we were right about every state in the primaries except Missouri, which Clinton lost by less than 1%. Otherwise, we were spot-on.

So, we know you Eeyores are going to drive everyone in your lives crazy today. You are going to panic and wet yourselves and email/call/bother all of your friends and relatives all day. You’ll forward bogus polls and terrible links to everyone, and depress people left and right.

We have no idea why you people behave this way and really wish you would stop. Because we’ve been through this with you since New Hampshire and just think it’s all so ridiculous.

Here’s our advice: take a break from news today — consider everything you hear to be lies. Watch some cool movies (our favorite of all time is The Contender with Joan Allen), eat a nice sandwich, have a nap (or two), then tune into the Election Results around 10pm or so CST to see the final tallies add up and wait for a winner.

The rest of the day will just drive you over the edge — and then you will spread this Eeyore gloom and doom to everyone else, because that seems to be what you do.

We will never understand that.

But, we know you’ll do it, because you’ve consistently done it since January. It’s very predictable.

Just like the election results.

McCain wins 286 to 252…and America gets its first female Vice President.

And on November 5th, we start campaigning for 2012.

83 FrogMarch  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 1:55:55pm

Went to vote in my Ohio township this afternoon and boy, they really had things organized . I was there at a good time (not busy) and was in and out in about 10 minutes. They had a big sign that ID was required and they did ask for ID and then asked me again my street address before giving me the voter book to sign. Everyone was pleasant and helpful. They had paper ballots and then those were fed into a machine when I was done.

I felt very peaceful when I left. It's a beautiful day here too. Great day to be an American!

By the time I left, after the polls had been open for 7 hours, more than half the registered voters in the precinct had voted, including over 100 people who had registered to vote that day. And they still have the after-work rush to deal with.

re: #72 stuiec

Maybe. I think you can give away something as a retailer if you offer it to everyone who voted regardless of who they voted for (though I am not sure), but I know one of the mayoral candidates in Oakland got in trouble a few years ago for offering free meal coupons to voters, which is considered buying votes.

No time to look it up now, but this law applies regardless of who you vote for. I think it is in place to prevent the skew that comes with higher voter turnout.

Something I posted in the previous thread before it became dead:

If I had kids going to the middle school where I voted, I would demand that the English teachers be fired.

The Student Council had signs up announcing a fundraising screening of Wall-E. The movie is free, they plan to make their profit from selling snacks.

Well, one sign had no fewer than three misspelled words. "Admition" for "admission," "durring" for "during," and "intermition" for "intermission."

Another sign had "concessions" spelled as "consesions."

In addition the grammar on the signs was very bad.

Oh, this school is in an upper middle class neighborhood and is one of those schools with all those "excellence in education" honors.

Why no exit polls so far? Is it because they weren't looking right? Or was it because they were looking right?

It's not like they're going to be of any use anyway:

Are the Exit Pollsters Up To Old Tricks?

I noticed this account of an exit pollster in Stafford, Virginia:

08:32 – AP doing exit polling in Stafford. Talking 4 to 1 to minorities over whites at a Republican precinct (Falmouth). Expect it to be skewed. Don’t trust the exit polls as they start to trickle out.

Only an anecdote, but not promising. Are the exit pollsters aiming for egg on their faces two presidential races in a row?

It's the same in MN (including mind-numbingly long lists of judges), but the ballot judge is absolutely not allowed to read the ballot. I worked that post for a few hours, and had to stand six feet away at all times unless the ballot jammed or something, which only happened once. Ridiculous the way NM does it.

It will be worse for a while (the first 24 hours migh even be violent), but I think McCain will organize his cabinet and his priorities in a more 'moderate' manner so as to lessen the sting.

I believe 3 or 4 of the major cities will have violence (not horrific violence, more like riots you see some times after a major sporting loss) if Obama loses.

I certainly hope the incessant drone of "stole the election", "re-defeat", "selected not elected" doesn't keep on through a McCain administration, but I am not holding my breath.

But I think the main problem was a several-way split in the conservative vote that left McCain with pluralities in a number of contests.

Romney was winning the closed primary states carrying Republicans.
It was the open states that gave it to McCain largely with media driven Indepenents. McCain was then the Media darling. My, how things have changed.

Some thoughts on The One's iron fisted rule for the next 4 years, some in jest.. Can you tell which?

1) Higher taxes on the rich making over $250K, $150K, $120K, $50K… etc.
2) Domestic “security force” to make sure you’re tithing enough and not insulting our Dear Leader with that pesky 1st amendment
3) Higher energy prices by outlawing coal, and gasoline, and oil and barbeque
4) What little is left of the military will be used for “domestic” operations, against terrorists who try to exercise their 2nd amendment rights..
5) We don’t really need Isreal anyway..
6) Columbia scholars trying to figure out how to kill 25 million citizens who cannot be reeducated.
7) Department of Peace led by William Ayers
8 ) Required morning listening speeches by Rev Wright about the dear leader
9) Supreme Court which reviews the UN’s policies, and the Constitution is just for historical reference.
10) Abortion up to the 10th month of pregnancy so women won’t be burdened
11) Regulated Internet.. Dissension and free thought will not tolerated..
12) Your 401k’s will be the government’s property.. Feel free to chip in another 3% of whatever is left of your salary.. The givernment will “give” you another 600$ a year
13) The US flag will be redesigned to have one red star on a white background. Blue stripes will be red, white stripes will remain. We’re all one now under the Dear Leader, why be divisive with the 57 stars representing the 57 states?

No, those aren't McCain's fault. But they may not entirely be the fault of the Republican electorate, either -- for a while, California had an open primary imposed by Prop. 198. The courts knocked it down.

I think that now the law is that a party can allow in "unaffiliated" voters to its primary but also has the right to restrict the primary to registered Party members. I think the California GOP ought to adopt the latter rule.

Don't make the appt, unless you have warranty. It might take three or four fills, but the problem will go away. It has to do with a sensor that detects the pressure in the tank. There has to be a good seal on the lid/cover when you drive.

No, he said it was a Volvo.

I saw one guy at the polling station (northern Virginia) with a shirt with a mushroom cloud on it with "Made In America" above it and "Tested In Japan" below it.

I told him that that was a rather amusing but thoroughly politically incorrec t-shirt he was wearing and he said he wore it so he wouldn't be asked who he voted for on the way out.

Charles, voted the same way you did. I almost voted Lib, but I couldn't get over the "f" at the end of their candidate's name. I really, really thought of pulling the trigger for Sister Cindy (Sheehan), for shits & giggles (and to make S.F. look even wackier), but in the end I voted for a very sexy local Republican (Dana Walsh). I remember back in the day when I was active in local events and she, Rose Chung, and one other gal whose name I can't remember, would walk around in moderately short (but not in appropriate) skirts -- they had great legs. :-P I'm such a dog on a rainy day.

297 Fenway_Nation  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 2:27:18pm

Just got back from the polls.....decided to walk there and back for some reason (about 2 miles each way). Had two or three people pull over and ask if I needed a lift...did I really look that out of shape?

There was a sheriff's deputy car (K9) parked there when I arrived. Made me wonder whether or not someone's gonna claim voter intimidation at that precint later on. It was gone by the time I left, though...

298 capitalist piglet  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 2:27:36pm

Voted in the Seattle area; my neighborhood is left-of-center, but not flaming moonbat. I got right in but the person who signed me in told me that I picked a good time to vote, because they've been jammed all day. I didn't ask, but she told me it was because of "the presidential election".

I was a bit surprised, because this obviously isn't a swing state - with an Obama Civilian Force gun to my head, I would guess most people here want to be part of an "historic" event, whether Komrade Obama needs their vote or not.

Don't fall for that term. Some people apply it to anyone who isn't pretending things are hunky-dory.

"It's raining."

"You Eeyore."

"No. Literally. It's raining. We're getting wet."

"Whatever, Eeyore."

Here's the thing.

Eeyore very often would stand in the rain and complain about the rain getting him wet. But he never bothered to do anything to help himself, generally protesting that getting in out of the rain wouldn't be much use now that he was already wet.

It's not the pointing out the obvious that's the issue. It's the pointing out the obvious without contributing any useful suggestion for improving the situation. That's what makes Eeyore Eeyore.

It Seems We’re Winning This Thing… Exit Polls To Follow Shortly…

It seems two things are driving voters to the polls today:

Love

and/or

Fear

From the information we are able to gather, most voters seem to be driven by a fear of what Obama would do to this Country.

Too early to call it, but when fear produces record voter turn out, it does not take a genius to figure out which way this election shall end up going.

Internal info says we are defnitely making PA red, by a margin higher than was predicted, talk less of expected…

333 blangwort  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 2:32:24pm

I vote in a state that is guaranteed to be a democratic bastion: Maryland. I started voting Republican primarily because in this one party state, they are less loony than the entrenched leftist Democrats.

The fact that this is a one party state highlights another problem: When either party takes both houses of Congress and the Presidency (or the Governorship), things start going downhill fast. Democrats ought to consider that having a president who questions what Congress does, or a Congress that question each house or the presidency is actually best. Having to negotiate or consider opposing views is a necessary part of good public policy. We are not well served by a one party state or federal government.

More importantly, I voted against question 1: The right to vote early, anywhere in the state. Yeah. Those Dems better watch what they're asking for. The opportunity to vote illegally and unverifiably goes way up if this thing is passed. The Dems are pushing for it though. They say that it improves voter turnout.

Yeah. But I think they're going for quantity, not quality. If even half of the rumors are true, we need to scrub those voter roles very carefully.

I wouldn't be surprised. I was handing out the "I Voted!" stickers at the ballot counter and - this is totally unscientific - about 20 people told me (without my asking) for whom they voted, or took my pen and wrote the name of their guy under "I voted!" It ran about 12-8 in Obama's favor. But if that number (55%-45%) were actually to be applied to the Twin Cities as a whole, McCain could make up the difference outstate, where the other half lives.

Very unlikely, I know, but I dare to dream. :-)

Ace (sorry, no link) has a post up saying a source is telling him IOWA of all places is "in play."

If you're in Iowa, and will vote for McCain, then get up and do it!

If Iowa truly is in play, then I'd say the One is in some serious trouble.

Moonbats here don't think Obama will take away their guns and ammo or put taxes on them so high you can't afford to shoot bee bee guns for pleasure. There are a lot of people here who shoot sporting clays, etc., and they just don't believe Obama would ever interfere with their 2nd Amendment rights. Some hunters even call the NRA the National Republican Association. Even when you point out he voted against all gun ownership when he was an IL Senator, they refuse to believe you.

I'm also very worried about companion animal ownership in this country. In some states, there will soon be a $500 annual licensing fee for intact pets. That makes it pretty difficult for reputable breeders to keep decent lines of dogs going. It certainly won't stop the puppy millers who make millions of dollars selling crappy dogs and cats to pet shops. Obama doesn't own a pet, to the best of my knowledge, he supports PETA and HSUS, who are some more of his radical friends.

Hope this isn't one of those verboten topics.

evening all... I'm sensibly ignoring the exist polls and frankly everyone else in the room should to. To wit....here'sa recipie

Quick turkey curry (works with chicken)
Cook 1/4 cup of chopped onion
1 Tb butter
1/4 cup milk
1 can cream of mushroom soup
2 tspn curry powder
1 c chopped turkey
1 c sour cream

cook the chopped onion in the butter, ad the cream of mushrrom soup and sour cream. stir until smooth. add the curry powder and turkey.. cook ata low heat until turky is done. I recommend keep stirring as dair products tend to burn easily

Yard signs were quite mysterious here in flyover land as well. Where there were "W" signs peppered everywhere in '04, this time there are tons of signs for local offices but only a handful of Mac/Palin including ours. My better half believes the locals fear hoardes of angry Obamite vandals overrunning the landscape. I am more concerned that they're actually sitting out McCain. This can be a principled group of folks - on this side of the state in any event. I have heard there are dueling Mac/BO signs in the western neighborhoods of the medium sized city just across the river but find that hard to believe.

Oh, and while thrilled to fill the red rocket with premium at $2.36 the other day, just read that it's now under two bucks in my fine, little burg. Hallelujah.

Robbins, an actor and director, reportedly started screaming when a poll worker asked him to move over to make more room for other voters. [Link: www.nypost.com...]

I have a really dumb question about exit polling...

Could the reason that exist polls are more and more inaccurate be because most polling is conducted in more urbanized areas?

In the years that a Dem won, they pollsters could say "see our polls are very accurate"

But when a Rep. wins, they're all scratching their heads.

I mean there's no question that urban areas are a bastion of Democrats. You know, the Under 30 college, MTV, no kids crowd.

I live in a nice quiet suburb in Orange County about 45 miles (thankfully) south of LA and the Hollyweird and I've never seen any kind of exit polling going on around here.

430 avk2  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 2:47:55pm

Apropos of nothing yet completely germane IMO:

i live in a well known suburb of a well known major NE city, but near downtown so i live in a urban renewal zone. The majority of my district voters are members of minorities (Great to see them exercise their vote but not for the 1). Yes our local representation is already nearly 100% lib.

Anyway, I went to the polling place (disused firehouse) this AM at 6:15. Polling place was already mobbed, yet very orderly with the AA folks seemingly happy/proud/jubilant in anticipation of a O-slide. So far so good.

Once inside, shortly before casting my vote, I became completely pissed off enough to call the Elections Board when it opened-an AA County Elections Volunteer/Staffer/Poll Watcher greeted an older woman adjacent to me he was acquainted with, with a loud enough (for at least 10-20 of the 100 waiting inside) to hear him say to her, "We're Making History" responded with a smiling "I'm Very Happy".

When I recounted this tale I was given this line:
"It's not Electioneering because its History if Obama wins and History
if Palin wins" I said that was 0% likely, given the context.
I also said if the situation were reversed there'd be many, many complaints. I added that I never heard one peep in decades of voting from any polling staff and it was completely out of line.

/was I racist? or just unpatriotic?

Here's the thing.

Eeyore very often would stand in the rain and complain about the rain getting him wet. But he never bothered to do anything to help himself, generally protesting that getting in out of the rain wouldn't be much use now that he was already wet.

It's not the pointing out the obvious that's the issue. It's the pointing out the obvious without contributing any useful suggestion for improving the situation. That's what makes Eeyore Eeyore.

Here's the other thing.

Yes, of course we should do our part to stay dry, so to speak. The problem is that some people deny it's raining at all. Well, you're certainly not going to do anything to help yourself if you can't even acknowledge the problem.

The best position, then, is to acknowledge the issue and then take action to address it. I'm sure we're probably agreeing on this -- it's just a tense time altogether, because our guy isn't cleaning the other guy's clock.

I wanted to be exit-polled too. But I don't think they have any credibility left, though I don't object to your idea. I think we should all remember: All the exit polls have been crap, every single election since the year 2000. By this time in 2004, we were told John Kerry was winning by a landslide. The pollers, the media, no matter who they are, no matter what they say - are just lying their heads off - cleverly - granted, through "statistics", but plausibly deniable lying nonetheless.

But we've seen this. If this is actually real, and it sure looks it, the doomsayers are definitely wrong, to put it mildly.

Yes.

Some thoughts:
1) exit polls overcount urban voters
2) exit polls are flawed by the bias of the poll taker (often grad students)
3) exit polls are now used by Dems to depress Republican voting in the western states and thus are part of the campaign, not informational.
4) exit polls rely on people telling the truth.
5) exit polls are flawed if they don't get an accurate cross-section of voters -- i.e. if Republican voters refuse to be polled.
