We’re in the final hours of polling on the east coast, and here’s another discussion thread…

(We’re trying to ignore exit polls this year, because they’re basically worthless.)

Voted after work, Southern Il outside of St Louis. This morning my wife waited 45 minutes. I was in and out in three. I was number 535 -- in the past maybe 300 would have voted there.

5 bosforus  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 3:27:32pm

Obama's worthless. Too bad I can't ignore him.

Yea Kentucky 61% for McCain so far.

One thing about the high turn out in this election; I remember several elections ago people were concerned that more than 50 percent of Americans didn't care enough to have a say in who is elected their leaders.

The predictions for this election is 80%, and that is simply amazing.

Has anyone noticed that America is about to adopt the platform of the Black Panther Party from 1966?

# We want power to determine the destiny of our black and oppressed communities' education that teaches us our true history and our role in the present-day society.
# We want completely free health care for all black and oppressed people.
# We want an immediate end to police brutality and murder of black people, other people of color, all oppressed people inside the United States.
# We want an immediate end to all wars of aggression.
# We want full employment for our people.
# We want an end to the robbery by the capitalists of our Black Community.
# We want decent housing, fit for the shelter of human beings.
# We want decent education for our people that exposes the true nature of this decadent American society.
# We want freedom for all black and oppressed people now held in U. S. Federal, state, county, city and military prisons and jails. We want trials by a jury of peers for all persons charged with so-called crimes under the laws of this country.
# We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice, peace and people's community control of modern technology

OK, I know exit polls are bogus, but look at Drudge.

PA +15 Obama. Totally expected, crazy pro-dem numbers...

But wait, drudge also has that based on exit polling, OH, IN, and FL too close to call.

If the exit polls are skewed by as much as they normally are, then any exit polling not showing wide Obama margins is a bad sign for Obama, right?

I won't take anything seriously short of real numbers, but I was rather surprised that that any exit polls in swing states would be close.

The people in line with me were very nice and patient, and ready to vote. And the rest of the nation can't be this way, why again?

I'm guessing you say that since no one on the news but Fox is reporting it (CNN had a little blurb about it too, I believe), however, since that video is at 530,000 views I'd take it to mean that the other networks aren't reporting on what people actually care about. And they're more than welcome to do that in my opinion.

33 artdog  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 3:33:40pm

Well, one of the advantages of living in middle-of-nowhere land just outside Santa Fe (aka Moonbat City) was: ZERO lines when we went to vote! We breezed right in, the election volunteers were even nice after they saw the "R" designation on our cards, and the whole thing went great!

Some moonbat-looking exit pollsters tried to accost us on the way out, but we politely declined to participate. In hindsight, it would have been fun to have lied and said we voted Obama - but I don't think my girlfriend would have gone along. She would have told them we voted McCain, and would have wanted to fight with them! That's my girl!

Anyway, I'm taking everyone's advice and ignoring the MSM for awhile. I'm "supposedly" still working now anyway -- just needed an LGF break :)

Go Johnny Mac!

A really dishearteningthing to me was walking out of the polling place next to a guy who sighed, "Well, I did my duty," like he had just farted into a hurricane, and got into a car with a McCain/Palin sticker.

One thing I can feel really good about is that I get to vote for Jeff Sessions. If there is one guy who will go down fighting for the Constitution like a she-bear defending her cubs that one guy is Jeff Sessions. If I could pick the POTUS I would pick him.

I only waited about 15 min but everyone in line was very upbeat and friendly. I think everyone is glad this campaign is finally over. No problems outside except some union group was passing out little snacks at the door inside the 25 ft perimeter of no campaigning. I had to chuckle because they found a loophole, they had people outside the 25 ft passing out the unions picks but they were not actually doing campaigning at the door. the only thing on the bags of snacks was the unions name.

He writes well over at the NRO blog and can take interesting angles on things, but he just sounds hard to take seriously when you listen to his whiny voice get indignant.

B-HO - 66,666,666, with 240 Electoral votes
Others (Nader, Paul, etc.) - 10,167,934, with the balance of 13 Electoral votes split among them.

Total votes cast - 209,285,489

81.3% of all eligible voters voting

NOTE: Up to six million fraudulent votes will be cast, give or take.

159 Noam Sayin'  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 3:50:24pm

My voting experience:

My registration card came over a month ago, and it small type on it was a notice that my polling place had moved to a nearby community center, as opposed to the church on the next block. I thought that made sense, until I got there at 7:00 am this morning.

There was already a line out the door. You see, they combined a couple neighborhoods at this one polling place. I remarked how there was never a line before to some others gathering, and a guy near me responded with, "Well, we've had eight years of George Bush."

We cued up at roughly 300 deep, and then I turned to the guy and said, "You know Bush isn't running this year, right?"

I didn't have to talk to anyone else in line the rest of the morning.

When we got inside, we were told people living south of a certain street (my neighborhood) would vote in the small room, and the people from the north side of that street would use the gymnasium. My neighborhood's line was only about 20 people deep, but I had to wait with everyone else before I got to that line. So, after a 45 minute wait in line, most of it waiting to get into the building, I got into another line to sign in, then got into another line to get my ballot.

Took me all of about 4 minutes to fill out the ballot and I was gone.

Drove my scooter in to work. Probably the last day I'll get to do that this year.

All eyes on Virginia at the moment, if that can be called relatively early for McCain (sometime before the next round of states close) that could be a good sign. If Obama takes that State, then we are in trouble. We'll have to hope McCain can take PA and hold the original red states, and pray he can replace Va with Minnesota which is rumored to be close.

anyways, I am focusing on the Senate right now. Win or lose the Presidency, that Senate Filibuster is very important.

Nah, but if you could spell out that word in a Scrabble game, you'd net some honkin' points!

V = 4 points
E(3) = 3 total points
N = 1 point
Z = 10 points
U = 1 point
L = 1 point
A = 1 point

Total points = 21 points

I think I'd still save the "U" just in case the "Q" comes to my rack.

200 Colonel Panik  Tue, Nov 4, 2008 3:55:19pm

I spent several hours yesterday afternoon and evening making calls to New Mexico from the McCain campaign HQ in Phoenix. Most of the numbers were answering machines but of the people who answered who said they had either voted early or were voting today only 3 were Obama to 10 for McCain. One of the McCain voters was an obvious "Puma", a very excited woman who told me she was a former Hillary supporter who despised the action of the Obama people in the dem caucuses and was now a "Democrat for McCain".

I just voted at my polling place in Ahwatukee. There were a couple of elderly retired Navy guys sitting in the parking lot in a golf cart with a big McCain sign on the windscreen. Gave them a thumbs up after I left the polling place and they broke out in big grins and waved.

I'm on my way to the McCain Palin event at the Biltmore this evening to watch the returns come in.

The polls in the panhandle of FL havent even closed yet. Its only 7 pm on the east coast. The last time the called the east coast at 8:30 PM EST. I have a running joke with my sons - we do Mark Levin imitation contests. He does not have a voice for radio. And he sometimes sounds just downright stupid when he yells at callers. He writes well over at the NRO blog and can take interesting angles on things, but he just sounds hard to take seriously when you listen to his whiny voice get indignant.

I know there are Levin fans here, and I guess I am since I listen to his show from time to time. That said, he has an ideal voice for the newspaper business.

Cast my vote in Maryland around 1 PM ET. There was no line at all. I was in and out in about 10 minutes. The poll workers did say there had been lines early in the day, though, and that they had never seen them that long before.

My city precinct/ward has always seemed somewhat apathetic to me, but it seems they're getting more action today.

There was not a single McCain sign in evidence, and only a few Obama people handing out brochures and holding signs.

Just now I went for my free Starbucks coffee, and there was more of a line there than at the polls! The said they'd been passing out cups all day long. I had an "I voted" sticker on, but the college kids in front of me didn't and it mattered not; everyone got a cup of java hot and hot, as Captain Aubrey would say. It was delicious. Tasted like democracy. The young woman I talked to while she was cleaning up someone's spilled coffee said people were welcome to second helpings, to - there was no way they could keep track of who had already been there.

Then I walked my Jindo around the neighborhood and came home to check the net.

So now it's just wait and see...

Greetings from Baltimore!

St. Louis is doing okay, so far. Took me an hour to vote ths morning, which was pretty standard. One of the near north suburbs, Velda City, is having big troubles, and hundreds are still lined up outisde. Voted after work, Southern Il outside of St Louis. This morning my wife waited 45 minutes. I was in and out in three. I was number 535 -- in the past maybe 300 would have voted there.

This seems to be true in many places. I voted mid-morning, and it took about an hour; the wait when the polls opened was very long. My wife went after work, around 5:30, and there wasn't anyone there.

I think a lot of people voted early, to "beat the rush" or to make the best of a day off work. I'm sure turnout will be high, but perhaps not in the stratosphere as many have been suggesting.

Once again, it was spun off of Love American Style. They had a skit called "Love and the Happy Day", starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham.

He probably did have a hand up in getting that role due to American Graffiti, but Happy Days was not spun off from American Graffiti.

Happy Days was inspired by American Graffiti. American Graffiti took place in 1962 while Happy Days took place in the 1950's. I recall seeing that film on New Years Eve 1973.

I really cannot imagine a larger % of voters voting for O as voted for Kerry.

As Rush pointed out today, millions of people whose issues have NEVER been covered by the MSM are TERRIFIED of an Obama presidency, whereas I believe most non-Kerry supporters were just annoyed at the prospect.

Put another way, I believe Kerry was a "social" socialist (not truly desiring to destroy the country), whereas Obama is an "antisocial" socialist hell bent on destroying the U.S. as we know it.

Wooo!

Just got back from voting and running some errands. Local polling station was at a new location; just across the street from my old High School which was the site up until this cycle. I'd say that 50-70% (16 or so) of the "booths" were occupied at 2:30 PM or so when I was casting my ballot.

This is the last year for voting in person at a polling station here in King County, WA. From now on, it's vote-by-mail, which isn't necessarily very reassuring to me, considering the infamous incompetence in the King Co. Elections department.

I'm starting to relax a bit, now that I've done my civic duty. It was difficult sleeping last night, and I've been contending with some overly tweaked muscles/vertebrae in my neck area making for some near-migraine headaches. Thankfully, things are better and I will try to avoid any contact with the MSM in any form for quite a while, in order to avoid a "relapse" of pain.

I'm not very certain that our local Republican reps will eke out a victory or two, since things have turned increasingly to the left over the past 10 years or so, but at least they got my (and that of my parents) support.

Now it's back to the grindstone/salt mines and get this darn project that I'm working on wrapped up - looks like I'll be spending some quality time with my Mac G4, VectorWorks (CAD application) and iTunes.

Go John! Go Sarah! And just plain go far, far Away, Black Panther Party! The same thing goes for those vile skinhead twits!

The National numbers look very promising.. what happened to O's 5 point lead?

I think the stidently rigged Obama tanker polls have backfired. Rather than discouraging Republicans from voting, they have convinced many Dems that it isn't necessary. Dems are much more susceptible to media influence than Repubs, or they wouldn't be Dems in the first place.

To help the process, I offer this public service announcement for our progressive lurker contingent:
I would like to add a public service announcement for lurking libs:

We quit, give up, raise the white flag of peace. Our hate-speech and bitter clinging are no match for your superior intellect and media skills. Your guy, the mighty O, obviously has it in the bag. Why waste your time on a redundant vote for a sure thing when you could get an early start on the victory celebrations? Party down, Democrats, it's in the bag.

Those of you whose image requires that you be seen to vote can take this opportunity to do so on principle rather than pragmatism. Send a message of true allegiance by casting that otherwise meaningless extra vote for Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney, or the CPUSA. It's the cool thing to do.

That's hard to believe isn't it? Urban areas always report first, so Democrats usually shoot off the blocks way ahead. McCain having the popular vote lead at any point is pretty amazing. Hell, I'd kind of assumed that if McCain won, he would win it while losing the popular vote.

re: #89 BigMoo

So, what does a nation do when roughly half the electorate is moving towards a Socialist/Marxist society and the other half is not so inclined ?
Regardless of who wins tonight, this nation appears more ideologically split than I can recall in my forty-some-odd years. Where do we go from here ?

I'm not sure I agree with this assessment. A lot of people I've talked to who said they were voting form Obama have displayed an almost complete lack of knowledge about his background, his views or his proposals. Most of them, I'm certain, would be appalled at the notion that the country might move in the direction of socialism. The same is true on the right; lots of voters don't have a clue about what McCain stands for, and certainly wouldn't pass even the mildest Conservative litmus test. There's lots of strong ideology on the fringes, but the vast majority of people don't seem to know or care much, and base their votes on what kind of tie a candidate wore during the debates.

As for what to do in such a situation, everyone could take a page out of Reagan and O'Neill's book - compromise. Perhaps difficult if all three branches fall to one party, but as the last couple of years have shown, that party is not terribly united, and has displayed a trend toward increasingly conservative candidates.

Laying the seeds of doubt about a socialist agenda isn't a bad foundation. But the fact that even the suggestion of such a tendency has been roundly vilified by both parties (for different reasons) gives hope that even raising it's specter may discourage it.

I invoke Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Henry, Monroe, and Mason...!

This brings back memories of my history teacher discussing early American History. He did it in dialogue:

"So, Mr. Washington, where shall we put the capital of our new nation?"

"Well, Mr. Jefferson, I was thinking of a lovely patch of land near my home in Virginia. It's a little swampy, but otherwise OK."

"That sounds like it would work. What's is called?"

"Foggy Bottom."

"Fo . . . what?!? I'm sorry, I'm not going to tell a nation of people whose husbands, sons, and brothers gave their life for the independence of this new nation that their new country is based from 'Foggy Bottom'. Mr. Adams?"

"Yes?"

"Arrange for the purchase of Foggy Bottom. As soon as everything is done, start the required paperwork to change its name to 'City of Washington'."

In ancient Rome, the voting was done by tribe. The priests presided over the elections, which were viewed not as the desire of the people, but a sign of the will of the gods -- vox populi; vox dei being for them not a rhetorical flourish but a sacred truth.

The elections could go on for hours, but at a certain point the priests would declare the winners once they saw patterns in the voting -- they read the votes like they would flights of birds or patterns of grain pecked by sacred chickens.

The MSM are the self-appointed priests of America. They see it as their right to examine each candidate according to their sacral worth, following the mythological secular religion they have constructed based on their cursory reading of the poets (i.e., the political scientists) and the records of their own prognostications in elections past. They watch the voters file into the electronic Saepte and then declare the winners, not as impartial observers, but as sacred oracles, gifted of foresight by the gods of politics.

A Republic cannot stand when the people give over the power of choice to the priesthood, but I'm afraid that's what has happened.

re: #545 Ben Hur

How can they call a state with only 14% counted?

Statistics. If the 14% is from a decent cross-section of the state (not all urban, for example) you can fairly estimate what the outcome will be by assuming the rest of the population will split the same way. There are, as you might expect, more sophisticated models that take into account things like voting times, past precinct voting patterns and many other factors. But it's a sound practice.

The estimates themselves are often not so sound, especially where races are close; there, small variations can make hay out of the stats. If the vote is significantly lopsided, however, it's probably going to stay that way. There have, however, been many surprises and turnarounds in past predictions. And sampling tends to be somewhat biased to urban centers, which is where all the newscasters are located.

I have to say folks at work have been completely circumspect, no one asks or mentions the election, sort of like "waiting to exhale."

I came home, took something to settle my stomach, half a valium and a glass of wine. If Obama wins, I'm drinking the bottle.

I am praying for equanimity and deep down I have a hard time believing Obama can carry Pennsylvania. He is a weaker candidate than Kerry who only squeaked by in 2004. Add to that his remarks, gaffes about guns, religion and coal and the possible PUMA factor, and I don't see how the One can win.

I've heard that the Philly suburbs can tip the balance, any word on that? I see the most Obama signs in the Main Line, lots of libs there, formerly Republican. In fact even more Obama signs than in the African American neighborhoods I work in.

Most Americans are ideologically clueless.

In the next four years, conservatives need to correct that.

I agree. This will be an important period to re-group and promote fundamental conservatism, which we haven't seen much of for several years. The country as a whole is moving rightward; many of the new democrats have figured this out, and have won by running more conservative campaigns than their watery Republican opponents.

Time to get back to basics, starting tomorrow. No matter what.

Has anyone noticed that the platform of the Black Panther Party is not dissimilar from the platform of Barack Obama's church--and that in both cases it views black Americans, who have been Americans for over 200 years, as "Africans" rather than Americans?

I have. Both groups view Afrocentrism as a sensible and even constructive thing when, in reality, it's neither. Black Liberation ideology, a la Wright and Obama is regressive to an extreme.

I will not credit -- ever -- Wright's and Obama's (or anyone's) claims that "Black Liberation Theology" in any way, shape or form, follows Christian precepts, or even meets the definition of theology. Exchanging the word "theology" for "ideology" does not make this extremely parochial (and hateful) ideology a theology any more than calling Al Gore's fantastical take on global warming "scientific" makes his claims scientific. Definitions really do matter.

Dunno. Carter did serious damage to the economy and foreign policy. We were lucky that the Soviet Union was already falling apart under the drooling and dottering Brezhnev and the gerontocracy. Putin is young and vital and the Iranian radicals can do a hell of a lot more now than occupy embassies. The world is a much more dangerous place than it was in 1976. More volatile with more rogue states and an economy in transition.

PA hurts bad, especially with NH also called for Obama. McCain has to win either NV, CO or NM plus all of Bush’s Red states from 2004 (minus Iowa I believe). NM looks out of reach because of the Hispanic vote going for Obama so heavily (so much for open borders, huh McCain?).

Pray for McCAin, but some good news on the Senate front, saxby Chambliss won his seat and the Dems now must sweep 6 of 6 to get to 60. Mary Landrieu is in trouble so they could lose that one. It is imperative The dems do not reach 60 votes in the Senate.

It spun off an episode of 'Love American Style' of which that particular episode was spun off the movie 'American Graffiti'. The role of Fonzie was cut nearly whole cloth from Henry Winkler's character in the movie 'The Lords of Flatbush'.

You can tell what they think of our music by the places we are forced to play it in. This looks like a good spot for a livestock show. -- The Mothers of Invention were opening for Cream in April of 1968 in Chicago. The place was very large and did look like it had been used for displays of cattle and other such animals.
