Barack Obama’s presidential win held a poignant significance for liberal Seattleites: This is their America, too.

The feeling was evident in jubilant partying in the streets, in quiet moments of reflection and in blossoms of red, white and blue.

With newfound patriotism, Seattleites want to wave the flag, hang it from their homes and stick it on their cars.

“The thing that’s kind of astounding to me is I never ever would have cared to own a flag,” said Rosemary Garner, 42. “This is the first day in my life I actually feel this funny sense of pride about my country. It’s a very foreign feeling, but it’s a good one.”

Of course, when Michelle Obama was criticized for saying she was “proud of my country for the first time,” these same people screamed “racism!” and pointed fingers.

Now, apparently, the whole city of Seattle is echoing her.

Change!

Pop Reject (my father) always used to say that the last stanza of the Star Spangled Banner was a very telling question that is as valid today as when it was written. When Key wrote the words he knew that in the morning this would still be the "land of the free and the home of the brave", but he didn't know if the flag would be there or not. Today we know the flag will still be there, we just don't know whether or not the country it flies over will still be the "land of the free and the home of the brave".

True to this day- especially now.

Ironically, I took my flag down yesterday. Always will be a patriot at heart but I'm too troubled right now. In contrast to Michelle Obama, I honestly felt a thrill of pride when Condi Rice was named Secretary of State...I don't feel the same pride now...not because of race but because the mindless adoration I see around me creeps me out. I couldn't care less what color Obama is, I care about what's inside his head and his heart and what I've heard and seen gives me worry.

Have no fear however - I intend to conduct myself in stark contrast to the hateful ways of the left...much as I'd like to give them a little payback for the last 8 years of bile and hatred. Time for stout hearts...

I wonder how far into the future those flags will be flying? I suspect that, like many liberal areas of the country after 9/11, these flags will be used as a feel-good symbol and then quietly put away - or as is more likely the case in these areas, disposed of in the trash with yesterday's NY Times and Chicago Tribune.

Emanuel was encouraged by his mother to take ballet lessons as a boy and is a graduate of the Evanston School of Ballet. He won a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet but turned it down to attend Sarah Lawrence College, a liberal arts school with a strong dance program.

No problems with ballerinas mind you, but I dont think they will scare our enemies.

It is interesting how the reporting on flag waving has suddenly changed a day or two after however. What was cynically termed "jingoistic" when a Republican was in office, is now termed "patriotic". Not to mention that when a Republican was in office (yes I know he is still in office, but you know what I am saying) not waving a flag, and hating America was "patriotic" but now that a Democrat is getting into office that would be termed Anti-American.

Even funnier (ok, sadder) is that I'm from Seattle (actually born there unlike many of the transplants who have almost succeeded in san franciso-izing it) and I can't stand what it has become. Several years ago the city had banners all over downtown saying things like "do you have a bank account?" "Is there food in your refrigerator?" Guilt, guilt, guilt. It was funded as an "art" project of course.

Three things:

The Seattleite response should be more rightly termed Democratism, instead of patriotism, insofar that they only love the Country when their guy is in office.

Second, I'm glad they are finally proud of the U.S., I'm sorry the Civil Rights movement, giving women the right to vote, WW2, WW1, Korea, Operation Desert Storm, and the billions we give away to charity wasn't enough, but voting in a Black man to POTUS was all they needed.

Third, and most importantly, we must work hard to make sure that we don't do what they did.

I live in Seattle now, but grew up in a small town in Idaho. I lived in Alaska for 11 years and Texas for 5. My in-laws are liberal, so I have a duel perspective on things. The liberals don't get conservatives, and the people here just assume everyone is a liberal, because they are living in a bubble.

Rampant negativity and vile comments reduce lizards to the level of the Kos Kidz. We really should avoid this. Like it or not, we have a new CiC as of 20 January, and the office deserves the respect of the citizenry. We are BETTER than this. Immediately starting in a ODS mode only plays into the hands of those who hate the conservative movement. Remember it is in part the civility that makes us great.

There is an excellent chance that the president-elect is sincere in wanting to do genuine good for this country (even though most of us probably disagree with the methods). I suggest that we pull together, and work with what we have. Propaganda aside, we should give him a chance- at least until a cabinet is chosen (which will be THE telling detail).

IF a proper represenative and responsible cabinet is selected, and IF the "socialsist-branded" posters, logos, and images IMMEDIATELY go away, there may be real hope that this will work out. There have been no riots, and the international third world response is mostly joyous BECAUSE in confirms the American ideal that even the son of a poor third-world immigrant can become president of the greatest nation on the planet. Do I think that it will it be business as usual? Definitely not. Do I think that it will be the end of the world? Also definitely not.

We survived the Franklin D. Roosevelt and Johnson administrations, and we eventually became greater for them.

Besides, if it really goes the way that the fearmongers worry about, there's always the midterms in 2010. Remember, even if this turns out to be another Carter administration, that only lasted four years and brought us Ronald Reagan for eight.

I served under the Clinton administration, I can serve under this one.

Chill.

Having lived in the Seattle environs 4 times over the course of my career, I can honestly say that I have learned to love the city but not the citizens. A more liberal bunch I have never met. Unfortunately, though, this article could have been written in any large city in the nation. City dwellers are just different. I also found it insightful, but not surprising, that the reporter never seemed to question these people's thoughts or actions. To him/her their actions were normal.

Colorado, of all places is going this way. The Zombie blog has an essay posted 10/15, entitled The Left's Big Error, or something like that. Read it and find mention of the Ascher experiment. Fascinating stuff. Normative conformity and all. Thirty five years ago, in high school sociology, the teacher decided that this would be a decent lesson. He reconfigured the method; in our case the victim was the entire class. The plants were three guys. I was lucky to be one of them. It worked as described. Pretty scary, it was, to think that the great majority of the group followed our bullshit, for no visible reason, over and over. I do think that people don't just cope with a dominant meme, or norm or whatever, they tend to adopt it as their own, and anything that contradicts it flies right by their consciousness. News agencies help disseminate this crap. There are Seattles and Chicagos growing like fungus in every state.

I think this thing was orchestrated. I overhead my Obama supporting co-workers yesterday all talking about flags and what it means to fly one. And the rules for doing it. I didn't make the connection til this AM.

the office is small business. Like 20 obama drones per 2 McCain regular citizens.

And today a few of them watched the Fox clips on youtube bashing Gov. Palin. There was a loud discussion about how much of an idiot she is, that even McCain thought she was bad. i almost interupted it. But that's my job. These people can't fathom that anyone wouldn't support Obama.

I plan to use this opportunity to explain to some liberal friends about how I feel. They are very excited and just as proud of the USA now because of Obama. But if I asked them if they were proud of their country before Obama was running, they would have definitely said no. They probably would've said they were ashamed.

But now I have the opportunity to tell that the way they are feeling now, full of pride of their country is the way I always feel about our country. Every time I hear the National Anthem played at any event, my heart fills with pride and joyful emotion. And I listen to the words of our Anthem,

"O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

The song is about our flag. The flag that represents our country. The flag that we pledge allegiance to. "We pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which is stands." We don't pledge allegiance to any single person. We pledge our allegiance to the republic, and the ideas and principles that it was founded on.

Those principles were recognized by our Founding Fathers and immortalized in the words, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, they they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

This years election is another in a very long list of achievements this country has attained. And for that it makes me proud. And when President-Elect Obama takes the oath on January 20th, and he swears,

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Then he becomes this country's President. He becomes our President. He becomes my President.

And if I feel he is not fulfilling his sworn duty to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, I will respectfully voice my dissent.

Rise above. Remember our principals.

One positive point on a newly acquired flag waving, it may encourage a sense of country and unity. In fact, the newly acquired, at long last, display will be researched for appropriate usage. The may be able to answer some flag history facts which they never learned at school. Who knows this may lead to reading the U.S. Constitution. Then we can discuss the roles of government.

It isn't losing an election that is hard to take, but the fact that logical debate over differences seems to be devoid of anything but talking points. When asked how will it be paid for or be done, the conversation tends to dry up, or end abruptly.

Is it to much to ask that voters be somewhat factually informed?

I, for one, will not give into the "derangement syndromes" of the left. Not that as some are saying devoid of vitriol where well deserved.

Regroup and continue the mission...

This victory by Obama, as much as some here are dismayed by his leftist leanings, is an unprecedented opportunity for national unity; remember Obama is half white too.

He will have to govern more from the center anyway, or he will be out in 4 years.

Let us hope he does an excellent job, and let's not make his task any harder by indulging in pissy attitudes.

The day after Obama won the election, the most liberal couple in our neighborhood hung an American Flag. I also saw a flag hanging in a very liberal coffee shop today. I am encouraged. I would like to believe that patriotism does not exclusively belong to the conservatives.

Even though I think they are idiots, I'd like to believe they are deep down patriotic.
